Well, what can we say? Our World Cup dreams may have been short lived but we still got behind our boys. Never mind, there’s always the Euro’s. And as I write this, Wimbledon has just kicked off or should I say ‘served off’ and so far, so good Andy, let’s hope at least he gives us something to cheer about this Summer! Speaking of Summer, it’s only gone and turned up! Nice one Summer. So we’ve got some great tips for keeping your make up actually on your face when the heat is on (see pages 12-13). If you’re lucky enough to be jetting off for a bit of sun, sea and sangria during the holidays, we’ve included a holiday checklist on page 62 that you may want to cut out and keep handy when the time comes. If you’re staying closer to home, July may as well be renamed ‘Fete Month’. I know it’s not as catchy, but you’ll be hard pushed not to find a fete most weekends somewhere around Bury St Edmunds throughout July. Which suits me just fine, you can’t beat a good ole’ English fete. Right here on Moreton Hall we have Abbots Green Summer Fayre on Saturday 12th July and the now infamous Moreton Hall Community Centre Family Fun Day on Sunday 27th July – which is becoming one of the biggest in the area. That’s it for now, have a fantastic July, whatever you’re up to.

Summer health & beauty

Makeup

Summer is full of pleasures — but melting makeup, sliding eyeliner, and super sticky lipstick are not among them. In hot weather, applying your makeup should be as simple and comfy as putting on your favourite pair of jeans and flip-flops, but the heat and humidity are a challenge, so you have to make a few little changes to your routine.

Make time for primer You won’t regret the few seconds it will take to smooth on a primer, which goes on after moisturiser but before face makeup. Like house-paint primer, it provides a smooth base for whatever goes on next. Primers are definitely the way to go in summer. They’re incredibly light, they don’t feel at all like a heavy, additional layer and they really help hold makeup in place.

Lighten your face makeup Just as you switch to breezy skirts and linen blouses, dress your face with lighter makeup. First step: Swap foundation for tinted moisturiser. These sheer formulas look and feel airier on skin and are less likely to turn cakey on steamy days. Feeling a little too exposed? Brush powder foundation over the tinted moisturiser in spots where you need a little extra coverage, on blemishes or areas of redness around your nose.

Bronze believably Bronzer makes your eyes look brighter, your teeth whiter, everyone looks better with a little warmth added to their skin. To keep the results looking fresh and natural, apply bronzer just to the high points of your face, where the sun naturally hits you: forehead, cheekbones, chin, and nose. (Covering every nook and cranny is what gives you that fake, baked look.) Powder bronzers are the easiest to apply; look for one with varying shades — they’ll swirl together for the most authentic-looking results. Another essential for keeping it real is a brush with long, loose, fluffy bristles, anything densely packed will deposit too much colour. Be sure to sweep a little bronzer onto your neck and earlobes, especially if you have short hair or are wearing a ponytail. A tan face that’s framed by pale ears will out you fast.

health & beauty Try out vibrant colour

Stay-proof your eye makeup

Just as you’re probably more likely to wear a vivid top or carry a bright bag this season, now’s the perfect time to play up your makeup palette. Besides looking summery, livelier colours brighten the face and bring a youthful glow to skin. If you tend to stick with neutrals, experiment with just one area of your face. A punchy blush on the apples of the cheeks is a good place to start.

For longer-lasting shadow, avoid using eye cream on your lids (it can break down makeup), and smooth on an eye primer instead. It will minimise creasing and create a base for the shadow to cling to so it lasts longer. Although powder shadows generally last longer than creams, for the ultimate in all-day wearability, layer a powder over a cream (don’t worry — this makeup artist’s trick still feels light on the lids). Doubling up works for liner, too. Apply your regular pencil or cream liner, then use a small angled brush to press dark shadow over the liner to set it for longer wear.

Stop shine, add glow A slick T-zone instantly telegraphs the message “I’m hot” — and we don’t mean ‘good hot’. To eliminate unsightly shine in seconds, nothing beats blotting papers. They’re cheap, easy, and amazing, you just press and go. If you need to perk up your makeup too, blot first, then follow up with a dusting of pressed powder with a hint of luminescence. You want to eliminate shine, but you still want to look a little glowy, especially in summer.

Switch out thick lipsticks Since heavy lip colours often feel like overkill once the weather warms up, many women opt for clear balm or skip their lips altogether. But just because you’re feeling low-maintenance doesn’t mean you have to look it. A simple swipe-and-go choice: tinted lip balms. They give you whisper-light colour, and many even have SPF to protect you from the sun.

Wade into waterproof If you tried waterproof mascaras once but found them less than stellar, it’s time to give them another go. They used to be brittle, crumbly, and flaky, but today’s formulas are much better — and they really last. Can’t bear to switch from your favourite? Apply a waterproof version on the tips of your lashes over regular mascara to boost its staying power.

Go sheer Rich, deep colours have their place, but they can look heavy in summer. To lighten up, switch to sheer versions of your goto lip and eye hues. Use a lipliner preapplication if you need extra definition, but go for a nude shade to keep that carefree feeling, or try “invisible” lipliner, which deposits a clear, waxy film to stop colour from bleeding. Because sheer colours are subtler, you almost can’t go overboard. Stick to pretty pastels and everyday neutrals, all with a sheerness that keeps them sophisticated.

Be beautiful this July! The Moreton Hall Directory

How to have a Better Birth 1. Overcome fear Confidence and relaxation are key to a better birth, so try some practical ways to overcome your fears and get a positive focus. Help reduce or even eliminate any fears by talking about them. Close your eyes and watch your ideal birth story unfold daily for the last few weeks of your pregnancy. 2. Learn ways to deal with pain Relaxation, breathing, and natural painmanagement skills all help you cope during birth. Take time during your pregnancy to stop, focus on your breathing and consciously relax each set of muscles in your body. Did you know that if you can breathe at 5 breaths per minute your body will go into the “relaxation response” this means your heart rate will slow down and your blood pressure will fall and you will actually feel relaxed. 3. Know you can do it! Pregnancy isn’t an illness or a medical condition women have given birth since time began and your body is perfectly designed to do it. Develop confidence in your body: just as you trust it to grow your baby, trust that when the time comes it will know how to give birth too. 4. Prepare your birth partner Yes, you’ll be doing most of the work, but don’t underestimate the support of others. The more informed your partner is, the more he or she can help and play an active part in the birth. Make sure your birth partner is fully prepared and knows how to work effectively with both you and the midwives. Learn together so you are both informed and confident!

5. Get practical skills from others You don’t have to be a passive “patient” when you give birth. There are all sorts of practical steps you can take to increase your control, confidence and focus. Learn about the physiology and emotions of birth so you really understand what’s going to go on in your mind and body. Read as many books and articles as you can and talk to people that have given birth! 6. Prepare a birth plan This enables you to be in control of your labour, you know what you want in terms of birthing experience and who you want with you. Practical things like hiring a birthing pool etc. or requesting one in the delivery suite are all important to plan. Make a play list of suitable music buy some aromatherapy oils to have with you in labour. Pack your bag early and put in some surprise little treats, even if you are having a home birth.

The remedies and advice suggested in this article are the personal opinion of the author. Please also inform your GP if you are planning to take any natural remedies and you are already on long term prescribed drugs.

health & beauty 7. Exercise Unfortunately the further you progress into your pregnancy the less likely you feel like moving and this can end up causing you back pain and other issues. Gentle exercise like aqua aerobics is ideal but probably the best possible thing to do is to take up yoga. Antenatal yoga will help you gain awareness of your body and its ever-changing needs. You will open up hips and shoulders to improve posture and you will strengthen key areas to cope with all the lifting and carrying you will be doing! Plus you will learn some valuable breathing exercises to help you deal better with the contractions of labour. And finally meet other pregnant mums who will remain friends for life and listen to real life birth stories from past mums to prepare you for what may lie ahead! 8. Learn Natal Hypnotherapy Natal Hypnotherapy™’s range of products are specially designed for mums just like you, and have been proven to help you achieve a better birth. Natal Hypnotherapy™ Workshops are now being run regularly by Better Birth & Baby at The Self Centre. Research shows that when you read about a subject you retain about 10% but when you practise actively you retain about 90%!

Want some evidence that Natal Hypnotherapy really works? Then visit www. betterbirthandbaby. co.uk for birth stories and testimonials from couples who have attended Natal Hypnotherapy™ workshops with Better Birth & Baby.

This month Sue Lucente tells about how poor diet can affect the brain which may lead to depression in some cases... Depression is more common today than ever before. It affects people from all walks of life and can sometimes strike out of the blue. There are many factors that can play their part, work pressures, financial worries, relationship breakdowns, bereavement or excessive prolonged stress. Although we may not necessarily be able to completely prevent depression we can certainly provide our body with the right nutrients to minimise the effects. The brain needs many nutrients to work effectively. Essential amino acids, some of which can only be provided by diet as the body cannot manufacture them. They can be obtained by eating oily fish, salmon and mackerel are a really good source. Low levels of serotonin are often associated with depression. Tryptophan is an essential amino acid which our bodies convert to serotonin . Foods rich in tryptophan include chicken, turkey, salmon, tuna, beans and seeds. B vitamins are essential to good health, folic acid also known as B9 or folate is essential to preventing depression, it can be obtained by eating plenty of green leafy vegetables, beans and pulses. Low levels of selenium have also been linked to depression, increase your intake by eating unrefined grains, lean meat and eggs. Brazil nuts are also a fantastic source of this mineral. Keeping your blood sugars stable will also help prevent mood swings. By choosing foods low on the glycemic index ( foods that release their energy slowly ) you can keep your blood sugar stable and your energy

levels up without experiencing mood swings. Avoid alcohol, fizzy drinks and caffeine as these will also have an affect on you blood sugars and mood. Drink plenty of water, approx 1.5 litres a day. Exercise also plays an important part of keeping us healthy. Exercise, particularly outdoor activities such as walking or cycling are excellent. Yoga can also help to relieve stress and anxiety. Following these simple steps will give your brain much of what it needs to help prevent the onset of depression.

Exercise selection and training experience Which exercises should I use, compound (more than one muscle group), isolation, full body programmes, body part split, which reps, sets, tempo? Confused? My answer to everyone with this question, what’s your goal and weight training experience? How I design a programme for someone with 10 years experience as a confident lifter, will differ completely to someone who has just started. How I design a programme for a man who specifically wants a wider back and bigger shoulders, will differ completely to someone who is looking for general fat loss. There are so many variables to consider, which makes it so difficult to give a set answer to such a wide audience. So I don’t leave you still non the wiser, here’s some guidelines to think about. If you’re looking for general fat loss and you’re pretty new to training, you want to be picking exercises that utilise as much muscle mass as possible. You would also benefit from a full body approach, where you are moving from upper body to lower body exercises throughout the workout. You want to be trying to include as many compound exercises as possible. These are ones where you will be using as many muscles as possible. Examples of these are, pull downs and variations, rows, squats, split squats/lunges, pressing movements, deadlifts and hip extension

movements such as back extension and romanian deadlifts. As a beginner, your body will respond so well to multi joint exercises, you won’t have to worry about individual muscles. As you get more experienced, you can then start to split body parts up. If your goal is muscle building or fat loss and you have a specific shape you would like at the end of it, you do need to be including a broad range of isolation exercises. Yes you will get overall growth by using the big lifts (squats, bench press etc), but to work on weak areas you do have to work them in isolation. I have to disagree with people who think that you should always focus on compound lifts/ exercises. If you want to change your body aesthetically and proportionally you do have to add isolation. Too many people copy workouts from magazines that are purely focussed around isolation exercises, when they really need to be putting meat on their frame with the big exercises like squats first. On the other hand, people with the mass who lack the shape, need to look at refining their physique with more isolation work. Think about your goal, think about your training experience and work from there.

NEWS FROM MORETON HALL RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION The following is breaking news ,as they say and it would appear that the move to the “Two Tier System” is going ahead. The link below gives a great deal of information on the decision making process. Proposed Reorganisation of Schools in the Bury St Edmunds Area Determination of Statutory Proposals Statutory proposals were published on 21 March 2014 for the reorganisation of schools in the Bury St Edmunds area. Following closure of the Representation Period and consideration of the representations received, Suffolk County Council’s Cabinet determined the proposals on 10 June 2014. The proposals were agreed subject to acquisition of planning consent for any necessary building work by 31 March 2015. A copy of the Cabinet report giving the reasons for the decision can be found at www.suffolk.gov.uk/ education-and-careers/schools-and-support-ineducation/school-organisation-review/bury-stedmunds-reorganisation/. At the recent MHRA meeting there was quite a long discussion about parking on the estate in particular

at Lawson place, the Community Centre and in the vicinity of Sebert Wood School. The 3 hour parking trial at Lawson place and community Centre will run till September at which time its effectiveness will be assessed. This trial for some reason is also preventing the “powers that be” from allocating parking permits to the Sebert Wood school teachers. Parking on yellow lines and blocking cycle paths in the vicinity of Tesco is being tackled by the Police Safer Neighbourhood Team and it is hoped that some guide to the effectiveness of their efforts can be produced. The Police team have also recommended double yellow lines at the junctions of Symonds Road and Kembold Close with Sebert Road. This is to increase all round visibility and improve safety for all road and pavement users at the extremely busy beginning and end of the school day. Patience and consideration for others would also help a great deal. Archie Wotherspoon, MHRA Co Chairman moretonhallra.bse@gmail.com www.moretonhallra-bse.co.uk

Local Audiologists Recognised For Customer Service Excellence In today’s competitive market place it is difficult for companies to differentiate themselves from one another. Customer service is one way of doing this and a company from Ipswich has recently been recognised for the sixth time in 8 years for the superior service it delivers to its customers. The Hearing Care Centre, a family-run audiology company, managed by entrepreneur Karen Finch has just been announced as a finalist in the Customer Care Award at the prestigious Anglian Business Awards 2014, organised by the East Anglian Daily Times newspaper. With the awards now in their sixteenth year, this will be the sixth time the company has either won the award or been selected as a finalist in the last 8 years. The company which has 18 centres located across Suffolk and Norfolk, including locally in Needham Market, Stowmarket and Bury St Edmunds, offers private hearing care services to thousands of patients across the region.

In the Customer Care category companies must demonstrate a strong customer focused ethos which underlies everything they do, going above and beyond customer expectations, ensuring everything that the company does has the customer at its core. The good news didn’t end there with The Hearing Care Centre also being announced as a finalist in the newly established ‘Director of the Year’ award. Karen Finch, owner of the company couldn’t hide her delight at hearing the news “I am so immensely proud of my team and what we do here on a daily basis. To be recognised by the judges for two awards is a fantastic achievement for a company of our size,” she said. The winners of the awards are announced at a glittering presentation ceremony and dinner at Trinity Park in Ipswich on Thursday 10th July 2014.

Moreton Hall’s Monthly Nature Watch by Woodland Ways

Honey bees are not good pollinators In recent years there has been a lot of media reports of honey bees dying off, and how it might affect pollination of flowers. These reports always seem to omit mention of the dozens of other bee species, hundreds of beetle species and many fly species which also have a pollinating function. Honey bees often are also treated as wildlife, whereas in fact they are normally somebody’s pets or livestock. Have you ever wondered how all that pollen actually stays on the bees legs, as you see in numerous photos? Honey bees actually put a dab of nectar on the pollen they collect, to make sure it stays attached and doesn’t fall off when they fly back to their hive. The sticky pollen arrives back home to feed the larvae, but of course this means that none or very little transfers

from one flower to another on the honey bees’ foraging trip. And if some sticky pollen does transfer to the appropriate part of the next flower in line, it is unlikely to achieve fertilisation. Honey bees are spectacular at robbing nectar and pollen from flowers and, despite centuries of myths, are not the flower’s friend at all. Other species of bee are less efficient at gathering pollen, and carry their load dry, so more does transfer from one flower to another. A flower-place, with a succession of flowers from early spring to late autumn is the best way to maintain a diverse and healthy wild bee population. Our woods are like this, but is your garden ..?

Petty Vandalism I am pleased to report that things have been very good on our estate over the past few weeks, well done all. The estate is looking very nice with lovely gardens, lush green trees and well-kept lawns and grass verges. There is still the case of plastic bags but with the new charge on bags, this might sort its self out, hopefully.

OVER

60’ s CLUB

The club is making pace after a slow start; the club opening is on the second Tuesday of the month however look out for posters giving date and time of next meeting, if you have not yet attended come along meet and chat.

DOGS

I have had several emails regarding dogs up and around Abbotts Green School, one lady in particular is having problem with another lady who lets her dog loose, the dog has twice jumped up on her son. Her son has a phobia of dogs. The dog owner seems not to care and just walks off after depositing the dog foul into the rubbish bin outside the concerned lady’s house which is not a dog bin. I have passed this email on to the police and hope they take action or at least talk to this person. There are a lot of dog owners on our estate who are responsible and train their dogs to behave, clear up and keep the area clean and safe, but sadly there are those who don’t give a damn mores the pity. Come on guys, if you have a dog please act responsible for the sake of others. There are some lovely woodland walks around the estate and a nice pond for your dogs to swim in, why not use them.

FLY TIPPING

There has been a noticeable amount of household fly tipping into our local woods, I understand that it is an offence to fly tip anything into the woods or anywhere. Clearing your garden and making it nice is great but not at the expense of dirtying up the local woods, most garden waste can be put into your brown bin or taken down to the household tip. Just dumping it over the fence or taking it into the woods is not on. Please look after our wooded areas and the environment.

PARKING This is the most contentious problem we have on our estate, families that used to have one or two cars now have three or four. Most complaints are of people parking on the pavements, which is an offence in law. This kind of parking puts lives at risk, mothers having to step off onto the road with push chairs and people using disable buggies. Lawson place has a parking restriction in place but this is very hard to control, the council have made 36 parking places available on the old community centre area, however the businesses are not using theses spaces. The idea was that the people employed in the businesses would use these spaces to free up parking on Lawson Place for their customers, it’s not happening. There is the probability of a development on the old site and if it goes ahead, we will probably lose those spaces. I am not at liberty to disclose the potential development but it will have an impact. Businesses please encourage your staff to use the Heldhaw Road spaces.

Until next time, take care, Frank

Christ Church Moreton Hall It is always a bit of a burden when somebody asks you to do something you do regularly but you have got other things on your mind. As I write England have just lost to Uruguay and our World Cup fate hangs by a thread. On the other hand our first grandchild Thomas Luke Kenyon was born 18th June. So to receive an email saying ‘Please can we have your article for the Moreton Hall Directory’ while always welcome did cause my shoulders to sag a little. But then it set me thinking. How often do our children come to us and say things like ‘Daddy, can you do my buttons up? Or will you help me with my homework? Or, I’ve lost my mobile phone. Or even, why haven’t you washed my sports. kit when I need it for school tomorrow?’ At those moments it is easy to be terse and say things like, ‘you should be doing that for yourself now’ or when will you grow up?’ It is not until they have left home, do you realise how precious such moments were. Just when they were open and wanted our help we pushed them away. For some children this can lead to greater friction in the teenage years. Others to turn their backs on their parents rush into a world where they really need help and protection, but now they will never ask. Last time I wrote to you, I talked about ‘living in the

32

The Moreton Hall Directory

now’. I have been gratified by the number of positive comments I received about that article. For me ‘Living in the now’ means being kind and spontaneous, when you really want to be doing something else. So, for us Dads and Mums with our eyes glued to the television, when people need our help in the middle of the big match, or celebrity Master Chef, let’s hope we have the grace to stop what we are doing, and turn the television off. Then do that thing with a smile on our face and a spring in our step because once we have lost those moments we can never get them back. As I read the gospels I find Jesus calling on people at what must have been inconvenient moments. While he comes to help He still requires a response. He doesn’t always get it and the golden moment is lost. Even today to Christians and non Christians do the same. However He never stops caring for us and seeking our friendship no matter how many times we ignore Him. He also keeps helping us when everyone else has stopped or is too busy. You never know when Jesus will come knocking on your door to help you. I hope you will be ready.

Over the course of this summer you will have many opportunities for golden moments while the children are on holiday. Make sure you respond well, because one day we will be the ones to knocking on their door and then we hope they will be pleased to see us. If everyone around us, our spouses as well as our children, know that no matter what we are doing, we always have time for them, it not only builds good relationships, it creates a home full of happy moments. The memory of which will strengthen us all as the years roll by. We have a long summer ahead of us let’s make every effort to enjoy it together. With every good wish, Yours sincerely, Revd. Canon Jonathan Ford. Minister Christ Church Moreton Hall

What’s been happening at... Abbots Green Community Primary School Earlier on in the year our school’s Eco Committee requested a clothing bank for the school site to recycle old clothes and shoes. The Salvation Army provided the textile bank as part of their ‘Recycle with Michael’ campaign. When the bank is full a representative from The Salvation Army comes to empty it and the school then receives a donation dependent on the weight of the clothes and shoes collected. The items are reused or recycled wherever possible, with profit from the sale of the donations being gift-aided to The Salvation Army. This month the children in Foxglove Class have been learning all about the importance of recycling textiles and how this helps our school; other people and the environment. As George explained “...Recycle with Michael if you want to help your school. Take clothes to the clothing bank and The Salvation Army will pick them up!”

Alice added:”It’s a great opportunity for people who are not as lucky to get new clothes!” The children learnt the importance of not just binning their old clothes. Thomas said that “Recycling clothes helps the environment.... because we can’t keep digging holes and stuffing rubbish in!” All families across the school are encouraged to use the textile bank which is located in our school car park. It has been a real success so far and we hope that the children will continue to spread the message...and fill the bank!

Mayor welcomes new business venture to the High Street A new home interiors and giftshop in Bury St Edmunds was formally opened by town Mayor Robert Everett this week. Blackthorpe House and Design, an extension of an established Interior Design partnership and B&B business based at Rougham, opened its doors in Churchgate Street last month and have enjoyed a successful first few weeks. Out and about in his first month of Mayoralty, Councillor Robert Everett visited the shop and said: ”It is so encouraging to see such a great mix of businesses on the high street,” he added: “not only is Bury now attracting well-known chains like Wagamama, Bill’s & Cote, but it is so exciting to see independents like Blackthorpe House and Design taking the plunge to open a retail outlet and really adding to the choice and vibrancy of our town.” Blackthorpe House owners Susie Carrington and Tony Cooper have a wealth of experience in interior design and opened the shop to showcase a carefully chosen and unusual range of gifts and home accessories to suit both traditional and contemporary tastes. Said Tony, “We are really pleased and grateful for all the support we have received from customers old and new and are looking forward to working on some new major interior design projects that that have come about from people calling in to the shop.” Susie Carrington, The Mayor Cllr Robert Everett, Tony Cooper.

WI News This month we had our Open Evening welcoming fellow WI members to join us and enjoy our talk, coffee and cake! Our Speaker was Peter Jackson from Scotsdales Garden Centre in Cambridge. He took us through the seasons looking at shrubs that would provide colour, flowers, foliage or architectural interest throughout the year. The slideshow showed the variety from which we can choose to fit our now smaller gardens and how to manage growth to ensure years of enjoyment. The colours were amazing and you could almost smell the scented lavenders and magnolia! He answered our gardening questions and while a special feed might sort out my honeysuckle, it may be that after 13 years it is probably going to contribute to my garden in another way - compost!! A great speaker and a great evening for which we received many compliments.

Football fatigue by Andrew Southwood It’s a perfect storm in some respects; warm muggy nights, a small baby, and a World Cup in South America. With these 3 things colliding it’s no wonder I’m feeling a bit tired. That said, sympathy is something I neither want, or expect, which is fortunate, as it’s certainly not forthcoming. The self inflicted exhaustion comes round every 4 years, with a relentless fixture list of late night (or early morning) matches demanding my attention. The thing is, I do not believe just the ‘big’ games warrant my time. The more obscure the better in some respects. I mean, Nigeria v Bosnia-Hercegovina in the early hours is more of a challenge. A chance to earn my stripes and show my true devotion to the cause. There’s always a chance it will be a classic, and I can say I was there. Well, not exactly ‘there’, but I was watching. There is definitely an element of feeling young again. A throw back to USA ’94 and a long carefree summer, when ‘soccer’ took off big time in

46

The Moreton Hall Directory

the States. The 1am ko’s were made for students like me. I think pretty much every night for 3 weeks I fell asleep at halftime, only to wake up disorientated and confused a couple of hours later, the test card fuzzing on the tv.

I find the consumption of more beer, coffee and snacks is pretty much essential. The 4th meal of the day at 10:30pm is a must if I am to make it past midnight, which begs the question how I normally cope without it?

Of course now I have a few more responsibilities to think about. Minor stuff, like; work, kids, the house, my wife’s sanity etc… It can be done though. Not quite with the same level of dedication. Self inflicted ‘rest days’ must be taken where the last match of the day is shelved in favour of sleep, and the teatime matches tend to be taken in via the radio whilst cooking and washing up.

It should get easier as the fixture list thins out. Of course once England are on the plane home I can start to relax a bit more and enjoy the matches as a true neutral without thinking about the tenuous links as to how they could impact on us in later rounds.

Alongside the gruelling feasting on relentless matches,

The best part is (and I know many of you will be thrilled by this!) by the time its all over on July 13th, the new domestic football season will only be one short month away!

You will need to stake taller varieties and pinch out the growing tips of smaller types to encourage bushy growth l Pick sweet peas regularly to encourage continued flowering l collect ripe seed from forget me not’s and foxgloves and sow in pots or scatter in shady areas l Deadhead Lady’s Mantle to stop it further self seeding. Alternatively allow it to seed and you will soon multiply the number of plants that you have. Young seedlings can be dug up and planted as soon as you spot them.

Lawn Maintenance l Regularly cut the lawn but don’t scalp it instead keep the height of the mower fairly high

Vegetable and Fruit Garden l Stake tomato plants and pinch out all side shoots. Also cut off any leaves growing below the lowest ripening fruit trusses

THE

MON TH – Lupins

et

PA U L S P L A N T

With their candle like flowers of many different colours which attract bees to their pollen lupins provide a welcome addition to a garden border. Lupins prefer well-drained soil which isn’t too rich. Lupins are fairly short lived and can produce good flowers for 5-6 years if you don’t let it produce lots of seeds. Instead keep the vigour in the parent plant and deadhead as the flowers fade. You can grow lupins either from seed or by taking cuttings. If you allow a lupin to go to seed collect and plant in a loam based compost. Basel cuttings can be taken in April. Regular deadheading will help encourage new flower heads to grow.

Doing The Jobs You Don’t Have Time For?

l If you have any space you can sow main crop potatoes, peas, cabbage and lettuce l Pinch out the tips of runner beans when they reach the top of the canes l Pick courgettes before they become marrows l Harvest asparagus until the end of the month, then allow the shoots to grow to feed the roots for next year’s crop. l Harvest the first beetroot, spring onions, radishes and salad leaves. Don’t forget to sow some more for a later crop. l Tie in blackberry canes l Once fruiting has finished give your strawberry plants a trim with a pair of shears, aiming to leave just a few leaves around the crown. New foliage will develop within a few weeks. Remove any mulch and weeds and clear away all debris from the crown. Put old leaves and straw on the compost heap.

Ponds l Clear algae, blanket weeds and debris from ponds, and keep them topped up

Celebrate the World Cup in Brazil with Vauxhall and Drive Vauxhall Football fans in Bury St Edmunds will no doubt be enjoying a sizzling summer of sport as new research from England team sponsor, Vauxhall, reveals that 70% of motorists enjoy watching football and 66% support a Home Nations team*. The manufacturer, which has supported Home Nations football since 2011, is giving fans the chance to raise the roof in more ways than one, with an opportunity to win a soft-top Cascada. Local Vauxhall retailer, Drive Vauxhall, is sharing news of a free prize draw, which is being hosted on the Vauxhall Football website, where fans can also keep up to date with all the news and views from the pitches and dressing rooms. The winning fan will take home a brand new Cascada convertible, which is designed for all-year-round travel. Sarah Ferrari, Market Area General Manager at the retailer on Cotton Lane, explains: “With this year’s Samba-style event, Vauxhall’s ‘Win a Cascada’ competition is giving fans at home the chance to be part of the celebrations and enjoy the season of sensational scoring and celebrations. “Entry to the prize draw is now open and is free and easy – all the public need to do is simply visit www.vauxhallfootball.co.uk/england and click on the Competitions tab to submit their name and contact details.”

Open season, whatever the weather With the changeable nature of the British summer skies, the Vauxhall Cascada offers a ray of sunshine, whatever the weather. Keenly priced from just £23,995 on-the-road, the fullsize, four-seater convertible offers premium qualities inside and out. It comes with outstanding levels of equipment, technology and luxury, to combine elegance with affordability. With its dual layered fabric roof, which opens in just 17 seconds at speeds of up to 30mph, the model is ideally suited to travel all year round, from cosy journeys in cool climates to top-down, toptemperature coastal cruising. Sarah Ferrari adds: “The elegant Vauxhall Cascada brings all-year usability to the glamorous world of convertibles. It offers drivers impressively high quality

and a rewarding ride, whether they’re looking for exhilaration, style or comfort.” The model’s high-class comfort is joined by practical infotainment features, a comprehensive range of driver assistance systems and uncompromised safety. The Cascada is available in two trims: SE and Elite. The SE boasts 18” alloy wheels, LED tail lamps and aux-in/USB, all as standard. In addition, the Elite model comes with leather trim, heated front seats and heated steering wheel, front fog lamps, and dual zone climate control. What’s more, the Cascada is available in twelve colours and can be ordered from Drive Vauxhall with solid, two-coat metallic or two-coat pearlescent paint, as well as a choice of four roof colours, depending on exterior colour. Entry to Vauxhall’s ‘Win a Cascada’ free prize draw’ is open from now until close of Sunday 13th July 2014. Visit vauxhallfootball.co.uk for full details, terms and conditions.

TAMMY

Melissa McCarthy, Susan Sarandon, Kathy Bates, Dan Aykroyd, Allison Janney, Toni Collette, Nat Foxon, Ben Falcone A downhearted woman embarks on a road trip with her granny in this crazy comedy starring Melissa McCarthy and Susan Sarandon. Life is not being kind to Tammy (Melissa McCarthy). The unlucky thirtysomething has written off her rustbucket of a car. She’s been fired from her dead end job at a greasy burger bar by sleazy boss Keith (Ben Falcone). And she’s got home to find hubby Greg (Nat Foxon) carrying on with their neighbour, Missi (Toni Collette). Tammy’s only way of getting away is to team up with her hard-drinking, potty-mouthed grandmother Pearl (Susan Sarandon), who has cash, a car and a yearning to see Niagara Falls. So the unlikely duo burn rubber on a wild adventure. Husband and wife team Ben Falcone and ‘Bridesmaids’ breakout star Melissa McCarthy co-wrote this hilariously madcap comedy. Its amazing supporting cast includes Allison Janney as Tammy’s long-suffering mum, and Kathy Bates as Pearl’s cousin Lenore.

Starring: Sophie Nelisse, Geoffrey Rush, Emily Watson, Ben Schnetzer, Nico Liersch, Roger Allam

A book-loving girl bonds with a Jewish refugee in Nazi Germany in this moving adaptation of Markus Zusak’s international bestseller. In the late 1930s, illiterate nineyear-old Liesel Meminger (Sophie Nelisse) arrives at the rural home of her new foster parents. Henpecked by his wife Rosa (Emily Watson), kindly Hans Hubermann (Geoffrey Rush) encourages Liesel to learn to read. Things change with the arrival of Max Vandenburg (Ben Schnetzer) - the teenage son of a Jewish man who saved Hans’s life during WWI. Now he needs help to avoid capture by the Nazis. While hiding in the Hubermanns’ basement, Max forms a bond with Liesel and instils in her a love of books. Narrated by Death himself (voiced by Roger Allam), this powerful adaptation of Markus Zusak’s much-acclaimed novel takes a child’s eye view of the horrors of the Holocaust. Behind the camera is Brian Percival, who’s best known for directing several episodes of ‘Downton Abbey’.

The moreton hall community centre news Hello all, It got missed out last month, but we would just like to say a massive thank you to Richard Crouch who in May organised a dessert eating challenge in the clubroom, which raised around £1,500 for the charities EACH and the MS Society, taking into account all the sponsorship money, raffle draw and the bid nominations to push various people’s heads into the leftovers! It was a great night, with a fantastic atmosphere, so thanks to all who took part and cheered on the brave participants. This month with the world cup well underway we will of course be showing the world cup final on July 13th, no matter who’s in it! And to celebrate it, we will be putting on a members BBQ for all of our members to come down and enjoy on what will hopefully be England playing and a brilliant night. The final starts at 8pm, the BBQ will run from 5pm until kick off. On Saturday 5th July our Saturday night bingo returns! It starts from 7pm, and is always a cheesy but fun way to wile away the evening, for kids and adults! On July 12th we have a quiz night, which has been lovingly prepared by the club committee! £1 per person to enter with a maximum of 6 on a team; it’s sure to be varied and interesting quiz, so make sure you enter! And to the successful team, there will of course be cash prizes for the victors. On 19th July we’ve got a circus workshop for kids coming to town, with 2 sessions where they can try their hand at learning some circus skills! There will be a fully checked tutor who will endeavour to teach the art of poi, juggling, diablos sticks and more. As ever with our events it’s free to get in, and there will be 2 sessions on the 19th – one starting at 4pm for younger kids up to 8 years old, and the later session at 6pm for older kids up to 12 years – both sessions last an hour! And then later on in the evening of the 19th July we have booked a magical comedy cabaret act Melton Mowbray to entertain you all! He will perform from 9pm in the evening and it is free entry for all to get in – non members are welcome (though encouraged to sign up!) On 27th July we are holding our annual Family Funday, starting at 11am and finishing at about 5pm. Save the date in your diary, as it’s the biggest event in our calendar! We have a climbing wall, zorb balls, helter skelter, various inflatable obstacle courses, stalls, a five aside football tournament (which is open for teams to enter!) as well as the annual grand raffle draw that as in previous years will feature some brilliant prizes. The bar is open of course and our chef will be firing up the BBQ. This year the police (who last year let us get them absolutely drenched with the hose!) and firemen will also be making an appearance, as well as a craft fair in the hall selling some perfect, unique gift ideas.

If you’re interested in holding a stall, or making a donation to our cause, then please phone on 01284 763402 or email on moretonhallclub@aol.com and we’d be happy to hear from you! All proceeds go to the Moreton Hall Association, to help us with future community projects and ongoing refurbishment. Looking forward to August and beyond, we’ve got some great events coming up, including quiz nights, more Saturday bingo sessions and darts tournaments, but we’ve also got a live band playing in the clubroom for our 60’s/70’s night on 6th September! In October we’ve booked Jukebox Fury to play in the hall and play – tickets will be available shortly to buy and reserve your spot! And there is our Halloween disco, great for kids to come down and for all to dress up and have a laugh! And although it’s the middle of summer right now, we’re getting a bit excited about our Christmas Party nights that we are finalising now! Our party nights will be taking place on 4 dates this year, on Fridays and Saturdays which are the 12th/13th and 19th/20th December. We will be having 2 kinds of nights, one of which will be with a live band and a delicious three course sit down meal, and the other will be with a beautiful seasonal buffet and DJ who will kick off your end of year celebrations in style! At the centre we have a variety of classes and activities going on during the day, from art classes to dance classes. One of the sessions, which is a Ballroom/Latin/ Salsa dance class, runs every Thursday from 2-4pm. Beginners are very welcome, it just costs £6 and refreshments are included. Call Theresa now on 01379 783114 or 07709 565875 to book your place! If you require any information about what goes on at the community centre, then please visit our website at www. moretonhallcommunitycentre.co.uk or give us a ring on 01284 763402. We’re happy to help! Of course our food offer of 2-4-1 on our bar menu is another reason to come down to your local club, where we prepare affordable, homemade meals from local produce from 12-2pm at the unbeatable offer of buy one get one free. Considering that means you can get 2 8oz rump steaks cooked to perfection for the absolutely incomparable price of £7.55, we know that this is quality you won’t get elsewhere on the Moreton Hall Estate. Come try us out – non members are welcome too! With a summer of exciting events well underway, and a lot more to come for the colder months, we’re hoping to be able to welcome you all soon at the centre and the club! See you all soon!
