hello...
…and welcome to the June edition of the Moreton Hall Directory. ters Sally Wal r Contributo mawalters.co.uk m sally@ge
It looks like I did tempt fate last month, mentioning how nice the weather had been in April. Whilst I’m writing this, the rain is teeming down outside and it’s blowing a gale - typical ‘Summer’ weather... and Jeremy and I, the ‘silly-billies’ that we are, are off camping for the weekend! But to lift your spirits, here is your fun-filled June issue of the MHD. Packed with our usual articles and features.

June… PIRATES OF THE 12A CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES
Director: Rob Marshall Starring: Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane, Geoffrey Rush, Richard Griffiths, Keith Richards, Astrid Berges-Frisbey
X-MEN: FIRST CLASS
12A
Director: Matthew Vaughn Starring: Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Kevin Bacon, January Jones, Rose Byrne, Nicholas Hoult, Jennifer Lawrence, Jason Flemyng It’s 1963, and the young Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Erik Lansherr (Michael Fassbender) are beginning to discover their superpowers. Against a backdrop of civil unrest and the Cuban Missile Crisis, they join forces with other mutants to take on the greatest threat the world has even known. The international Hellfire Club boasts among its membership some of the most wealthy and influential members of society, including Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon) and Emma Frost (January Jones). But as they attempt to thwart the Club’s world domination plans, a rift develops between Charles and Erik that will lead to them becoming bitter enemies as Professor X and Magneto. So begins the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men. Directed by Matthew Vaughn, ‘X-Men: First Class’ is the first film in a projected new trilogy tracing the origins of the hugely popular Marvel superheroes.
Captain Jack’s back, and this time he’s in search of the fountain of youth - in 3D! For the fourth instalment in the mega-popular saga, Disney have refined all the elements that audiences loved most about first three ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ adventures. Johnny Depp’s lovable, scheming Captain Jack Sparrow now takes centre stage as he embarks on a new quest. This time his foe is the most notorious pirate of them all - the dastardly and fearsome Captain Blackbeard (Ian McShane). As if that wasn’t enough, Jack also has to contend with a mysterious woman from his past, the alluring Angelica (Penelope Cruz) - a con artist, mistress of disguises and tenacious swordfighter. But is she on his side or out to trick him? Has Captain Jack finally met his match? One thing’s for sure, all those zombies and mermaids he encounters along the way aren’t going to make his mission any easier.

THE HANGOVER: PART II
Director: Todd Phillips Starring: Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms, Justin Bartha, Ken Jeong, Mike Tyson, Jamie Chung How do you top the debauchery of 2009’s runaway hit ‘The Hangover’? Find somewhere even more debauched than Las Vegas, that’s how. So Phil (Bradley Cooper), Alan (Zach Galifianakis), Stu (Ed Helms) and Doug (Justin Bartha) are off to Thailand for Stu’s wedding. This time, of course, Stu vows that it’s going to be different. Rather than a big drunken blowout, he’s opted for a civilised pre-wedding brunch. What could possibly go wrong? Well, after a quick drink, the friends awake to find the groom’s future brother-in-law is missing. Then there’s Stu’s facial tattoo, Alan’s shaved head, and their new monkey friend to explain as they struggle to find out what happened and get to the wedding in time. Mr Chow (Ken Jeong) and Mike Tyson return, while joining the cast are Liam Neeson and Jamie Chung, who plays Stu’s long-suffering fiancee.

vitality.
Director, The Self Centre
Reflexology is a popular and relaxing holistic treatment based on the principle that reflex points on the soles, tops and sides of the feet are connected to corresponding areas throughout the body. In this way, the feet can be seen as a “map” of the body. Origins of Reflexology: Whilst the art of reflexology dates back to Ancient Egypt, India and China, it wasn’t until 1913 that Dr William Fitzgerald introduced this therapy to the West as ‘zone therapy’. He noted that reflex areas on the feet and hands were linked to other areas and organs of the body within the same zone. In the 1930’s Eunice Ingham further developed zone theory into what is now known as reflexology. Eunice observed that congestion or tension in any part of the foot is mirrored in the corresponding part of the body. How can reflexology help me? This gentle but powerful therapy encourages the body to work naturally to restore its own healthy balance. Reflexology has been shown to be effective for: Migraine, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, menopausal issues, infertility, back pain, arthritis, and stress related conditions. It works fantastically in pregnancy

too and can help with morning sickness, oedema and bringing on a late baby! Other benefits of reflexology can include: reduced stress, feelings of deep relaxation, increased energy levels, improved circulation. Can everyone enjoy reflexology? Reflexology is suitable for all ages and may bring relief from a wide range of acute and chronic conditions. After you have completed a course of reflexology treatment for a specific condition, many people find it beneficial to continue with regular treatments in order to maintain health and well-being. Many people use reflexology as a way of relaxing the mind and body and counteracting stress also. Many doctors, consultants and other health care professionals recognise reflexology as a well-established, respected and effective therapy. What happens when I go for a treatment? On the first visit the reflexology practitioner will have a
preliminary chat with you to determine your present and past health and lifestyle. A treatment lasts for approximately an hour. You remain fully clothed, simply removing shoes and socks. Reflexology can also be carried out on the hands and face. What happens if I have ticklish feet? It really doesn’t tickle at all as the pressure is on certain points only and can be gentle or firm, whichever you prefer. How will I feel after a reflexology treatment? After one or two treatments your body may respond in a very definite way. Most people note a sense of well-being and relaxation. It is important to drink plenty of water over the next few days to help flush away the toxins. If you have any queries, don’t hesitate to ask your therapist for advice. Why not try playing with your own feet! If you are bored at home one evening why don’t you try a little bit of self foot massage? Start by gently working to separate each toe with a finger so you
health&beauty
end up with your fingers threaded between all toes – this works to open up the energy of the feet and helps with balance and steadiness on your pins! Second press firmly on the pads at the top of your feet under each toe for a few seconds each for a few minutes – this old wives tale is said to encourage the body to stimulate its own Manual Lymphatic Drainage mechanism which may encourage Lymph that has pooled in the ankles in feet, (Oedema) common in late pregnancy and in the elderly or in hot weather, to drain away.
SPECIAL OFFER ON REFLEXOLOGY TREATMENT! If you fancy pampering yourself or someone you love then Ali MacMahon is offering a FREE 20 MIN REFLEXOLOGY SESSION with any Massage or Pregnancy Massage booked for the month of June 11. Have the perfect
Eye Brows
Eyebrows are tricky creatures. You know how they’re supposed to look, but sometimes they don’t want to cooperate, and because they’re growing out of your head, they have a semi permanent character that defies wishes and good intentions. One of the many problems of eyebrows is the fact that if they aren’t the right colour, they can either dominate your face or disappear entirely. Their unfortunate (but necessary) proximity to your eyeballs makes it a pretty major no-no to just sweep the haircolour across each brow and hope it doesn’t drip into your eyes. That’s why the goddess of practical beauty created the eyebrow pencil, an unsatisfactory solution, but sometimes better than nothing if your eyebrows happen to be very pale.
Proper Beauty Tools Make Eyebrow Shaping a Breeze Plucking the perfect eyebrow shape can be a stressful task because no one wants painful, over tweezed brows. Follow the lead of make up artists and get the right tweezers and eyebrow care beauty tools. For very little money you can get the same eyebrow tweezers most professional salons use. Learn from the professionals and see some eyebrow care kits that come with everything you need for perfect brows.
Shaping Your Eyebrows: How to get the perfect arch shape Shape is also crucial, and if your eyebrows are coarse, creating and maintaining the ideal shape is difficult because pulling out individual hairs can leave large gaps, or severely shorten the length of a brow if you happen to pull out the half-inch hair on the very end.
18
themhd
The perfect eyebrow starts above the inside corner of your eye (over the tear duct), and ends at the outside corner, above your eyelashes. Eyebrows should have an arch: in nature, it’s rarely where it should be, which is a frustrating commentary on standards of beauty. Ideally, the arch happens over the iris, the coloured part of your eye. It should be gentle, so if you’re planning to reshape your arch, take it very, very slowly. Do a hair or two a day, and err on the side of caution. Hasty plucking can give you a surprised look that lasts for weeks.
How to Pluck Eyebrows with Tweezers: The Do’s and Don’ts Many women pluck their eyebrows with tweezers. Some wax them, but wax is tricky because it’s hard to get an accurate shape. And some go to a hair removal salon to try “threading.” Although threading is now popular in the UK, it is a centuries-old technique of hair removal practiced in India. The eyebrow experts say never, never to pluck your eyebrows from above, but always to pluck from the bottom of the brow. But, if you have some wild or stray or bushy hairs growing above your brows, feel free to carefully pluck those to tidy. It’s okay to trim your eyebrows, this is good if the single hairs are long and thick. You can pluck some hairs and trim the others, brushing them up, evening the ends (be careful not to trim too much!), then brushing them down checking again and again as you go along.
Finally, keeping your brows neat can be done
with special eyebrow gel, or you can use a little hair gel to smooth them and keep them shapely. You can buy an entire professional-style brow kit that includes tweezers, pencils, grooming gels and brush from most department stores.

Liberte Fitness –

helping Bury St Edmunds getting leaner, fitter and faster Outdoor fitness company Liberte Fitness are rapidly approaching their first year of training in Bury St Edmunds and are well on their way to getting East Anglians leaner, fitter and faster. Liberte, who train four times a week in Nowton Park, held their first sessions in the town’s Abbey Gardens late last summer before they quickly outgrew it and relocated to their current home at the start of this year. Since then membership has soared and demand has been so big across East Anglia that additional classes have been set up at parks in Newmarket and Norwich. There are currently nine hour-long sessions a week. Liberte founder Papillon Luck said “We’re really starting to see long term results from our regular members in Bury St Edmunds. Women have dropped dress sizes and been able to get back into jeans that have been stuck in the wardrobe for 4 years. More importantly instead of this weight loss happening instantly such as with some bootcamps where clients experience unrealistic results that are hard to maintain; our classes improve overall health and fitness which in turn leads to weight loss and toning. So yes, weight loss is one of the results you may experience but you’re also increasing all 5 components of physical fitness, something which is not often achieved in an hour in the gym. “One man in his 40s has lost 2 stone in weight and another in his 30s has seen his asthma almost vanish due to taking part in our regular park sessions. It’s been unbelievable to see just how much fitter our members have become.” Papillon said that although weight loss isn’t the main aim of Liberte Fitness, both her and Lead Personal Trainer Gareth Thomas are always excited by the members results. She said: “By training outside we’re using all the natural elements to get people fitter in terms of toning their bodies and being able to do more exercise. This has also helped trigger weight loss in members who have also made changes to their diets since joining, which is tremendous. Research shows that exercising outside burns up to 20% more calories due to the uneven terrain and battling against the weather. “Seeing people getting in shape in the natural surroundings of Nowton Park has been a big bonus and really inspiring. Our park sessions are proving to be extremely popular and we make a point of using different bits of the park in each session.” The hour-long sessions are different every time and combine jogging with exercises such as sit-ups, press-ups, crunches, burpees, sprints and team games, all of which is done with the emphasis very much on fun.
20
themhd
Papillon said: “There’s nothing like working out in the evening sun with a team of committed adults. Sometimes it’s just us in the park doing our thing, getting fitter and faster with nobody watching us but the birds in the sky and a couple of curious rabbits. One thing is certain, you can always hear a lot of laughter and some good friendships have been made.” For more information visit www.libertefitness.com or call 07815 934182.

Hospice Retail Centre – come and see for yourself
Did you know St Nicholas Hospice Care has a Retail Centre on the Moreton Hall Estate? Many people are unaware of the Boldero Road Retail Centre – which is a treasure trove of second-hand furniture, bric a brac and quality household items – so it is holding a ‘come and see for yourself’ sale and volunteer day. The event, on Saturday 18 June from 10am-4pm, will feature a not to be missed offer – a generous 10 per cent off all prices on the day. Good quality furniture and clothes, a volunteer stand for those who might be interested in helping out at the centre, music and refreshments will also be on offer. Darren Devine, Retail Centre Manager said: “We’re fussy about what we sell – we aim for quality products on the shop floor at sensible prices as we want our customers to return. “Why not come along and see what’s in store?” Don’t miss out on the chance to pick up a bargain from our treasure trove of donated furniture. And, as every penny will go towards helping us to

provide hospice services, you will know you have contributed to helping local people with terminal illnesses. The centre is open to the public six days a week and there is free parking outside, too. Donations always wanted Are you upgrading your furniture or simply wanting to offload any unwanted items? The Hospice is always looking for good quality items to be donated. Perhaps you have a piece of furniture you no longer use and would be willing to give? Your donations would be greatly appreciated and in turn you will be helping the Hospice to help those in need. Collections can be arranged. For more information, please call 01284 747622. Retail Centre opening hours: Monday/Tuesday/Thursday/Friday 9am-4pm. Closed for lunch 12:30-1pm. Wednesday 9am-12:30pm. Is your child an inter-nightmare? It has been suggested in the news, that kids spend too much time on computers, watching TV and using social media…
Our society today seem to conduct their whole lives online, so is it any wonder our children are doing the same? It could be argued that we are breeding a generation of inter-nightmares. According to recent studies, the average child sponges in 2.5 hours of music each day, almost five hours of TV and films, three hours of Internet and video games, and just 38 minutes of oldfashioned reading! With social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook taking over social time, children spend the majority of their time hooked up to their parents computers, or now more commonly, their own! Blogging is now becoming more popular among older children. It’s great to encourage any form of writing, but in the form of blogging perhaps limit to twice weekly postings. Remember that even writing a blog can become addictive. There’s writing a blog, and then there’s spending all free time fixed to a computer screen. We are perhaps all a little guilty of that once in a while! Without becoming a nag, it’s wise to monitor and limit the time your child spends surfing the web, playing interactive video games, or messaging. Not only will limiting time give you more time as a family, but it will encourage other activities such as sport and reading. So, if you find it hard to tear your child away from the computer try these three steps into controlling their time online…
Talk with your child about his/her excessive computer usage.
Move the computer to an open area if it’s not already in one.
Find out if there are any specific reasons that they spend so much time on the computer sometimes the computer functions as an escape from reality. If your child is facing problems that are causing a desire to “escape”, try and address those.
Sometimes taking it out of the child’s bedroom is sufficient to reduce their computer usage, and it makes it easier to monitor their time online.
28
themhd
family&home Set a time limit on the amount of time your child can spend on the computer/social sites each day. H First, tell your child their time limit and see if they’re able to stick to the limit. H If your child can’t control their time on the computer on his own (which may show that their addiction is serious), start using a timer. Once the timer goes off, your child has to get off the computer. H Set a time limit on the amount of time for yourself in order to be a good role model. If your children see you following your own rules, then they will be more likely to follow.
Encourage other activities, such as going to the cinema as a family or walking. Maybe take up a new hobby as a family or organise regular day trips out instead of everyone spending their weekends fixed to the TV or computer. The important thing to remember is that children should be allowed online, and to completely ban them from the computer will only make the problem worse. Always use parental control on your computer, this way, when your children are online, you know their safe and not going onto sites which may contain adult content, or have chat rooms.
If you try these techniques together as a family, it’ll put those inter-nightmares to bed!

Elm and the
white-letter hairstreak Those of us old enough to remember the 1970s may remember the tall, majestic elm trees which graced the towns and countryside of England. Elm was one of our commonest trees, with many uses throughout history. For example, elm wood is resistant to splitting and was used for wagon wheel hubs, chair seats and coffins, and was favoured as a source of timber for keels in ship construction. The wood is resistant to decay when permanently wet, and hollowed trunks were widely used as water pipes in medieval Europe. Elm was used as piers in the original London Bridge. In the 1970s, Dutch elm disease spread through the country and killed practically all mature elms. The disease is caused by a fungus, carried from tree to tree by a little beetle which burrows under elm bark. The elm bark beetle cannot penetrate bark of
young elms, and only when the trees reach a few metres high can the disease be caught. Elm remains a common species, but generally is only found in hedgerows where regular cutting keeps it adequately juvenile so the beetle can’t unwittingly bring its deadly spores. Elm is present in Moreton Hall, in a number of places. You can see it in the hedge alongside the cycle path from Sebert Wood school to Salter Close, and also in the hedge along Orttewell Road next to Home Covert. No doubt it is in a number of other rural hedges encapsulated in Moreton hall, if only you look. And if you do find some elm, June is the best time to look out for white-letter hairstreak butterflies. It lays its eggs only on elm and is not common in Suffolk. Any sightings you make would be gratefully received (phone or email as below).

ELECTION NEWS
I would just like to thank each and everyone of you who put your trust in me by voting me back as one of your Borough councillors, for the next four years. I assure you that your faith in me will not be lost. I will, as I have in the past, work to make our Estate the best it can be. I will make sure your views and concerns are heard.
Some facts about the election itself. There was a 41% turnout and 61% of that was postal votes, this proves the value of having a postal vote. Should any of you wish to know more about the postal vote, please contact me and I will explain everything to you. Another misconception that was going around during the election, was that people only had one vote. This was wrong there were three seats up for election and therefore everyone had three votes, with five candidates you had a choice of any combination of three out of the five, not just one. The next election is for the County Council and this takes place in two years time. On this occasion there is only one seat and therefore you have one vote no matter how many candidates are put forward.
WHATEVER IS NEXT Over the past two months or so, we have had a spate of eggs been thrown at the church, the youth club, a house on King Fisher Road and one on Raedwald Drive. Some of the eggs are domestic chicken but sadly some are pheasant eggs removed from nests around our fields and woodlands. This mindless carry on is not what we expect in our area, if anyone knows who is responsible, please let the police know.
TESCO
We all know that the road outside Tesco mini store is a cycle path and double yellow lines. I have had several emails from mothers who have to leave the path and walk on the road. This is very dangerous both for the mums and the children. I have forwarded the emails on to the police, hopefully they will do something about it.
BRIDGE
I read in the May issue of this magazine about the possibility of having a bridge over Mount road linking Natters Wood to 10 acre field, what a good idea. I will support this and would like to work with Woodland Ways to get this done. I will contact them and see what, if anything, we, the council can do. Like they say, we have some wonderful walks around the estate and making them more accessible would make sense. The above picture is of the walk from Leyhill Covet The Youth Club AGM will be held on the 10th June up to Salter Close. at 7pm in the youth club, all are welcome, please

The WI News May brought the Resolution meeting and this time there was a good deal of discussion on all sides of both resolutions. The economic impact of large farms on local communities and small farmers, cheap meat? the pollution from all that expelled gas! Then on to the libraries, although a local issue that is dear to many hearts and a lifeline to the elderly and young mums, could this be influenced nationally? What other services would be cut instead? While we discussed, we enjoyed a “pudding night” – tasting various desserts and cheese and biscuits provided by members. Our second baby is obviously an amazing bundle of joy, but (and here’s the catch) since her somewhat dramatic arrival in October I can literally count on the digits of one hand the number of nights she has slept for more than 21/2 hours in one go. ‘Yeah, but that’s obviously slightly exaggerated isn’t it?’ I hear you say. Believe me - I only wish it were. Anyone that has brought up a non sleeping baby (of which I hasten to add this is our second!) won’t be surprised to know that sleep deprivation is used as a means of interrogation. It has even resulted in court trials over whether or not it is a form of torture. If I were on the jury I would definitely agree...assuming that is, I was able to stay awake during the proceedings.
There is one particularly nasty interrogation technique whereby the subject might be kept awake for several days and when finally allowed to fall asleep, suddenly awakened and questioned. It must be a similar feeling to the rare occasions when I finally enter what could be described as a ‘deep sleep’, only to be woken 10 minutes later, not by the baby, but by our toddler calling out for something or other. It’s as if they have cunningly come up with a tag team sleeping pattern, inflicting maximum discomfort on us.
be consciously aware that they are occurring. I am guessing by the very fact that I am still alive at the end of my daily commute and my colleagues at work haven’t mentioned it to me, I’m not quite at that level yet?
I read that when a person has significant sleep deprivation microsleeps can occur. The brain automatically shuts down, falling into a sleep state for a period that can last from a second to half a minute. Essentially, you fall asleep no matter what you are doing. Apparently you wouldn’t even
As I flutter in and out of sleep there are two thoughts that frequently enter my head. Firstly, whoever came up with the phrase ‘sleep like a baby’ was clearly not a parent, and secondly, no matter how exhausted I will feel in the morning, my wife will feel even worse.
In the meantime, there is a light at the end of the tunnel as, at 8 months old now, I have calculated (based on my previous experience) that by early next year I may occasionally potentially be getting as much as 4 or even 5 hrs uninterrupted sleep. I am positively salivating at the thought.

The Master Composter by Paul Turner
Welcome to the Master Composter feature, where I will tell you about the joys of composting. I am a Master Composter Volunteer, which means that I have been trained by a charity called Garden Organics, in association with Suffolk County Council, and I devote my spare time to encouraging and assisting everyone to compost more. From the complete novice to the veteran composter, if you have a question about composting, then I will use this page to answer them.
There’s a pest in the compost! We all know that a compost heap is a self contained ecosystem with many mini beasts and animals, ranging in size from Microbial up to small mammals and reptiles.
the implications of doing so on the beneficial creatures. Any addition of poison or chemical can have a serious affect on the populations of creatures within a compost.
Not all of them are wanted, beneficial or pleasant but they are attracted to compost heaps and bins because they are teeming with other forms of life, which provide food, and provide a modicum of shelter and protection.
So what have we got living in a compost pile? Starting with the smallest inhabitants, different bacteria will start to be attracted to fresh compost material as temperatures start to increase. Mesophilic decomposers are the 1st to arrive and start to feast on the organic waste. By their very actions the compost starts to heat up even more and, unable to survive this temperature, a new Bacteria, thermophilic microorganisms, move in and feast on the vegetation and as that runs short, the bodies of the
In fact there are very few creatures that can be found in compost that don’t actually contribute in some way to the decomposition process. Before we declare all out war on the undesirables we have to consider

Mesophilic bacteria. This in turn generates more heat and results in the Thermophilic bacteria dying off. Fungi then make a bid for dominance as the pile cools down but this can be affected by adding fresh compostable material and starting the process again. By keeping the compost at a high temperature you can reduce the amount of time it takes for the heap to reach maturity. Fungi can include Mushrooms, mould and yeasts and their presence indicates that the heap is at the right temperature for worms who contribute a huge amount to the creation of the finished compost.
family&home Now that the heap’s main changeable stage has passed, the heap is invaded by a wide variety of creatures:
As you can see there are many more beneficial creatures than Unwanted. Also the Undesirables can also be beneficial but are usually the ones we really class as pests. For instance: Slugs and snails are a real menace to gardeners. However, in a compost bin they are contained and can speed up the composting process. Under no circumstances should you put slug pellets or powder inside the compost as it can kill other organisms in the bin and disrupt the ecology within the heap. Protect young plants in the garden from attack by the slugs and snails by methods other than the pellets and powder, and the slugs and snails can remain in the compost helping out. Fruit flies, as we all know this year, are attracted to compost heaps because of the rotting fruit that we add to the pile. I realise that having a swarm of tiny flies rise up from the heap everytime you open the lid is going to be off putting. The is that they are harmless and their larva will eat and further decompose the vegetable matter. Try burying

Unharmful Grass snakes Hedgehogs Black soldier fly maggots Slow worms Frogs Toads
Undesirable Slugs and snails Mites Ants
Unwanted Rats and mice

Rats and mice are not wanted in a compost heap. You can avoid attracting them by excluding all meat, fish and dairy products Mites are related to spiders and as from the compost which will such give many people the creeps also keep other types of flies out of the heap too as they mostly when they see them crawling lay their eggs in decaying animal across the vegetable matter in a heap. Christ Church Moreton Hall Thank you very much for all your support during Christian Aid week no total is available yet but we the courteous welcome you gave to both our runners and our collectors. Also a big thank you to Rick Wakeman, and the Moreton Hall Youth Centre for their support of this event. The period in the Christian year between Easter and Pentecost is probably the most important for Christians. During this time we commemorate that Jesus not only rose from the dead, but He appeared to hundreds of his disciples, ate with them, taught them, allowed them to touch and feel Him, and finally gave them commands to guide them for the rest of the history of the Christian Church. This period ends with the Feast of the Ascension followed by the Day of Pentecost. Pentecost reminds us of when the Holy Spirit came down from heaven not only to empower the church but also to indwell everyone who believes and to enable them to live the sort of life God wants us to lead.
Spirit. The dove is a bird of peace. The presence of God in our lives gives us deep and abiding peace. This enables us to face all the trials and tragedies of this life with the full assurance that God knows us and loves us and will bring us safely through. The symbol of water is to remind us that God cleanses us from all sin and enables us to start brand new lives. Also water gives energy and causes things to grow, be refreshed and become fruitful. We believe that as the water of the Holy Spirit cleanses us He gives us the energy and life-giving fruit we need to live our lives. Fire has the ability not only to consume but to transform. We believe that by the power of the Holy Spirit we can transform ourselves, transform our churches and, of course, transform the society in which we live. It gives us fresh enthusiasm and greater strength to face every challenge good or bad.
Finally, the symbol of oil is to show us that God can heal. Oil in ancient times was used to rub The Holy Spirit has four symbols. into wounds to cleanse them and make them whole. of the Holy Spirit in our time at Christ Church we have seen many peopled healed from a whole range of diseases and bodily difficulties. As you face the challenges of your life, do you need more peace? Do you need to be cleansed and revitalised? Do you need to be transformed? Do you need to know deep and lasting healing in your life? If so, the Holy Spirit is hovering above our church longing to come down and touch those who need Him. Over the last twenty years, the Holy Spirit has made such a difference to so many people. Why don’t you be one of them? This Pentecost why not join us as we seek to renew our faith and encounter Him again. With every good wish Yours sincerely, Jonathan Ford

Newsletter Summer is finally here; we hope everyone is enjoying the warmer weather. With the warmer weather we also have the longer and lighter evenings and the temptation to leave windows and doors open. Suffolk Police would like to urge people to be aware of Bogus Callers that may take advantage of this. • LOCKED - Keep your front and back doors locked, even when at home • STOP – Are you expecting anyone? Do they have an appointment? • CHAIN – Secure door bar or chain, before opening the door • CHECK – Ask for a photo identity card and if in doubt, check it • REPORT – Any suspicious callers with a 999 call • DESCRIPTIONS – Make note of description of callers or vehicles PLEASE BE ALERT WHEN OUT SHOPPING There have been reports of a few purse thefts from people whilst out shopping, we should like to remind you to please be aware of anybody who may approach you and distract you – one victim was bumped into by a male, they then found that their purse and wallet were missing. Keep your purse, bag, wallet close to you at all times and do not let a stranger distract your attention from your belongings at any time. We had a similar motive late last year with offenders distracting/confusing cashiers at supermarkets, when asking for change.
THE NEXT PRIORITY MEETING FOR THE PUBLIC The next priority meeting that you, the public can address your concerns and issues to, is on Wednesday 8th June 2011 at Sainsburys, Bedingfeld Way, Bury St Edmunds in the restaurant. The meeting will begin at 7.00 pm and finish at approximately 9.00 pm. These priorities will then be problem solved by partner agencies including the Suffolk Police, St Edmundsbury Borough Council, Havebury Housing, Suffolk County Council and others, to specifically target the problems experienced by residents. We look forward to seeing you all. This is your opportunity to come along and find out about what is happening in your local area, raise any concerns or issues you may have or just simply to meet your local officers.

JUNE
in the garden Roses will be flowering well now and should be dead-headed regularly to ensure further blooms. Make sure that the plants do not go short of water and treat any signs of disease and aphid attack.
Harvest new potatoes when plants are in full flower. Gently dig a distance from the main stems of the plants and pull the tubers from the ground. Fork over the surrounding soil to reveal the rest of the unattached potatoes.
Garden centres should have a good selection of bedding plants to plant now for Summer colour. Look out for half-hardy perennials such as Diascia and Verbena, which will give loads of flower power through Summer until the first frosts.
Remember to feed tomato plants weekly once the first truss of fruit has set. Make sure the plants do not go short of water, checking them at least twice a day. Remove any side shoots as they appear on plants grown as cordons.
Remember to feed your containers and hanging baskets weekly with a liquid feed such as Miracle Gro or Tomorite. Dead-head spent blooms regularly. Climbing plants should be tied-in to their supports as they grow. Thin out woody growths from early flowering Clematis if necessary and prune back long current year’s growth on Wisteria. Reward Wisteria after flowering with a feed of general fertilizer such as Growmore. Hoe between crops in the vegetable garden whenever the soil is dry. This will help to keep on top of germinating weed seedlings as they emerge. Hoeing also helps keep moisture in the soil.
52
themhd
Compost any material from the garden and also vegetable waste from the kitchen. Layer-up coarse material with grass clippings and other finer material, in your compost bins. Add an activator such as Garotta to speed up the composting process.Give your late-flowering perennials the ‘Chelsea chop’ at the beginning of the month, pruning back the new growth by half. This will delay flowering a little, but create more shoots and flowers to give a stunning late show. Plants that will benefit from this include Asters, Veronicastrum and Phlox paniculata varieties. Remember to keep an eye on slug and snail damage in the garden and treat with your chosen control method as soon as any problems are seen. Little and often is the key to slug and snail control.
Enjoy June in your garden!

How to Turn a Hobby Into a Career Love to cook, make crafts, take photographs, repair cars? Like to tinker around the garage on weekend home improvement projects? How about sewing or knitting, planning parties, or troubleshooting your friends’ computers? These are all skills that can be successfully turned into full-time careers given the right amount of time, effort, and lots of passion. “Love what you do, and the money will follow” is an old adage that still holds true. Legions of small business owners have taken the attitude to heart and eventually followed their dreams to greater and greater success. No reason you can’t.
Discovering your career potential A little creative thinking is all that’s needed to begin breaking out from your 9-5 routine. First, get down to the nitty-gritty economics by developing a small business plan detailing budget, time, and costs of starting up your own business. How big a budget do you actually need to begin? Where are your customers and how do you advertise and market to them? Who’s your competition? Next, find out about setting up shop, any applicable taxes, or if you think you will eventually need to hire employees. Ask friends or family for help. Also, don’t hesitate to visit related online organisations and associations, or seek additional help in small business forums where you may find other interested people who share your same goals. If you’re not now in a position to open your own business, consider writing about it for industry or hobby magazines, or teaching your skill at local schools or community centers. This can also serve as a testing ground to see if your energy equals your passion —the two most necessary assets for a small business owner. It will also help build up your “cred” as you announce to the world that you’re ready to strike out on your own.

5 Ways to Save for your Dream Summer Holiday... When times are tough, a holiday is a big expense some of us have to forgo... but start saving now and you could be jetting off next year! Experts from consumer organisation Which? have come up with these tips to initially save for, and then pay for, that dream holiday. 1. Choose a Best Rate instant access savings account
Instant access savings accounts have the advantage of allowing you to access your money at any time. It may be that you decide to fly off to Greece or Spain at the last minute and need to get your hands on your cash straight away. The top instant access Best Rate accounts are paying around 3% at the moment.
2. Fixing the date
If you are planning a holiday for next year or perhaps an around the world trip in the future, fixed-rate deals will tie up your money until then to ensure that you aren’t tempted to dip into your holiday fund. There are currently some 1-year fixed-rate deals paying around 3.5%, while you can get nearly 4% on 2-year fixed rate accounts.
3. ISAs are the answer
Now that we are in the new tax year you should make sure that you’ve used up your tax-free cash ISA allowance for 2011/12 before you put money into other savings products. You are allowed to put up to £5,340 into a cash ISA up until 5 April 2012.
4. Regular savers for all you ravers
Regular savings accounts are great for putting money away each month to save for a particular purpose, in this case that cruise you’ve had your heart set on for years or catching up with the relatives in Australia or New Zealand.
5. Go now, pay later....
There is a way in which you can go on holiday now and pay for it later, without incurring high interest charges. The best credit card deals with 0% on purchases allow you to pay for the holiday now and pay no interest for up to 15 months. Paying by credit card also means you’ll get extra protection under section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. Make sure you keep up the minimum monthly repayments on the credit card though, or you could lose the 0% interest deal.
...and when you’re there
It’s also important to make sure that you get the most out of your money when you’re away by using the best card options. The best credit cards to use abroad charge you nothing extra for using them for purchases in Europe. Many also have no extra fees for shopping worldwide.
Wherever you choose to go, have a great holiday, and don’t forget to get travel insurance before you head overseas.
