editor’s letter Just when you thought football season was over… It’s back with a vengeance from 14th June, it’s only the blinkin’ World Cup! A time when even the football haters amongst us get swept up and carried away with the patriotism that the England football team brings out in us. And we all have that deep down feeling that this year may just be our year, even if we don’t want to admit it ;-) Come on England, do us proud! Speaking of unlikely sporting outcomes, you can see Sally and myself trying our hand at golf… Yes golf! When we took part in Bury Golf Club’s Ladies Taster Day (see page 61). And from one extreme to another, we also gave Pole Dancing a try, see what we thought about our pole dancing debut on page 8. (It’s safe to say there WILL be a July issue of the MHD, we won’t be giving up our day jobs just yet!) As always, there’s plenty more local news and features throughout the magazine, a little something for everyone.

UNLEASH THE INNER GODDESS IN YOU… WITH POLE DANCING When you think of exercise classes, Zumba, Spin, Circuits and Yoga come to mind, rarely do we think of pole dancing as an form of exercise. It’s fair to say that some may think of pole dancing as something you might find in a shady, back alley club, but think again... It’s fast becoming one of the most popular forms of exercise. Sally and I couldn’t wait to give it a try when local instructor Dawn asked us along to one of the sessions at Moreton Hall Health Club.

We were met by our instructor Jo for the lesson. Jo showed us a quick demonstration and I was pretty blown away. She made hanging upside down on the pole look easy, but I can assure you it isn’t! We started out with a brisk warm up to some funky music and then on to the poles! Okay, so we sat that out and just watched, but it’s amazing how good the other ladies have become with just 6 lessons so far. The lessons are so much fun, there < Gemma and Sally try out pole dancing.

Instructors Jo and Dawn show us how it’s done!

was a lot of laughter and some great music, almost like a girls night out. Ladies of all ages and sizes can do pole dancing, there really is no discrimination at all, you just need to be prepared to have some fun. Not only is it an amazing workout, both cardiovascular and for toning the body and getting rid of unwanted body fat, it’s also a real confidence boosting skill to learn - just imagine showing off your moves to your fella or your friends in a club one night, they certainly would be amazed!

vitality.

Director, The Self Centre

This month we look hay fever and allergies Between 15-20% of the British population suffer from hay fever with symptoms ranging from itchy eyes and sneezing, to a sore throat and a runny nose This is the time of year, with the pollen count rising, that some people suffer also from various asthmatic and allergic conditions. Oil Seed Rape and Tree Pollen are prevalent in this area and seem to cause many people a problem. Common symptoms of respiratory allergies include sneezing, wheezing, watery, weepy eyes, coughing, postnasal drip, and itchy nose, irritating feelings in the eyes, ears, nose and throat. Some secondary symptoms can be fatigue, headaches, nosebleeds and itchy skin.

• EYEBRIGHT Tincture or capsules reduce hay fever symptoms.

What Causes Hay Fever?

• WITCH HAZEL to bathe sore irritated eyes. (Check out your village shop they normally sell it cheaply!)

Researchers have yet to clearly understand why some people’s immune systems over-react to exposure to pollens and other environmental elements, while others don’t. It is hard to pinpoint the exact cause of respiratory allergies; however, heredity does seem to play a role, as do environmental factors. Some evidence suggests that those who were breastfed as babies are less likely than those who were bottle fed to develop allergies. Symptoms of hay fever are partly a result of inflammation that, in turn, is activated by the immune system. Because of this, a properly functioning immune system is crucial in the treatment of seasonal allergies. As I often say, it is so important to look after this body that we have – eating sensibly, taking regular exercise and reducing our stress levels are all vital actions to take if we want to strengthen our immune systems. Old Wives tales will tell you to take a spoonful of local honey (made within 10 miles of where you live) as the bees feed on the pollen, I have seen this work really well.

Herbal Remedies: As far as treating the symptoms there are various useful herbs you can try: • CHAMOMILE Tea is used to reduce duration of hay fever attacks. • EUCALYPTUS OIL used in steam inhalation to ease congestion.

• GINGER Reduces inflammation, antimicrobial. • LIQUORICE ROOT Reduces inflammation, antiviral, antibacterial. • NETTLE Extract acts as an expectorant, reduces sinus inflammation. • ROOIBOS/REDBUSH TEA has antihistamine properties. A tea is sometimes helpful in relieving symptoms. • ST. JOHN’S WORT Capsules are used to relieve sinus headache.

• LUFFA COMPLEX (Bioforce) – Taken to improve breathing.

Vitamin & Mineral Supplements –

particularly Vitamin C and Zinc to boost the overall immune system (take advice before buying)

Vitamin E - New data suggest that supplementing with vitamin E can help lower rates of asthma, rhinitis and hay fever. Researchers in Nottingham surveyed the vitamin E intake of a random sample of 2633 adults, aged 18 to 70. Each of the individuals supplied information on their intake of vitamins E and C, magnesium, polyunsaturated fats and other nutrients, via a food frequency questionnaire. The participants also underwent measurements to determine their sensitivity to grass pollen, cat fur and other allergens, as well as to provide information on the nature of their asthma and hay fever. On putting all of the information together, the researchers found that those with the highest daily intake of vitamin E were least likely to suffer from allergen sensitive atopic conditions such as asthma, rhinitis and hay fever. In addition, none of the other nutrients measured appeared to have the same protective effects nor did vitamin E appear to be more effective in

health & beauty combination with any other nutrient (Lancet, 2000; 356: 1573-4). Remember that wearing sunglasses can often help protect pollen getting into the eyes.

Other Allergies

Allergens, the substances that give rise to a variety of symptoms including those listed for hay fever cause the body to react as if an alien substance is attacking the immune system. In some instances, like peanuts, the reaction is potentially fatal. Sometimes there is confusion between an Allergy and Intolerance. You hear many people say they are allergic to a particular foodstuff – unless they have a severe and instant reaction then chances are it is more of an intolerance, which although not fatal can be distressing. Here is a list of the most common culprits and their symptoms (Craving is a clue!) • DAIRY – Bowel problems, migraine, asthma and eczema • GLUTEN (Wheat, Oats, Rye) – Migraine, bloating, difficulty losing weight, irritable bowel problems. • EGGS – Rashes, stomach upsets, asthma/eczema • FISH – (Chemicals used to smoke) Migraine, nausea, skin rashes

This month Sue Lucente offers advice on mid-life female dietary requirements One of the most important things in life is to be healthy, whilst we cannot control all of the factors that contribute to good health there are many things we can do to try to stay as healthy as possible. A good diet and moderate exercise are really important. A good balanced diet can help reduce the risk of developing high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and many other chronic diseases. It can play a large part in reducing symptoms of the menopause from which many people suffer many varied symptoms. Fatigue, mood swings, depression, hot flushes, night sweats can all be reduced by eating the correct diet. There are many changes taking place in the body at this time and by eating a varied diet and concentrating on providing certain vitamins and minerals in slightly higher quantities than normal you can help to reduce some of the symptoms listed above. Unfortunately fatigue and low mood can cause some people to use food as a comforter and that combined with a slowing metabolism will cause weight gain. When we feel low we tend to choose foods that are quick and easily to hand. These are more often than not full of refined carbohydrates and high in fat, such as crisps, chocolate and ready meals. These can effect your mood by causing fluctuations in blood sugar and their nutritional value is poor, therefore depriving your body of the increased nutrients that it needs particularly during this phase of your life. Reducing or limiting your alcohol intake can be really helpful as some women find that their tolerance of alcohol changes, this is probably due to the fact that the liver and other organs are already working harder to cope with extra work due to hormonal changes. Eat freshly prepared meals containing some protein, lots of varied vegetables. Fruits and vegetables eaten with the their skin on will help to keep up your fibre intake. Ground flaxseeds sprinkled over your breakfast will not only provide extra fibre to your diet but they are also high in healthy omega 3. Reduce your intake of sugar. Eat healthy, non-sugary snacks and drink plenty of water to prevent the build up of toxins in the body. If you would like further advice on nutrition or help with a healthy eating plan, why not book a consultation with Sue? Contact Sue on 07777 655252 or visit the website at www.suelucentenutrition.co.uk.

proposed new school is at the stage of waiting for Government to approve the Preferred Provider selected by SCC. The new school will be built to accommodate 600 pupils and the requirement is estimated to reach 1400 over 14 years due to the change to the Two Tier System and Housing Development. Emphasis has also been placed on the building of a bridge at the Cattershall level crossing. Neil Anthony from SEBC gave a briefing on the progress of the proposed Football Facility. At present the main task is putting the finances in place and to consider co-location with the proposed school, primarily access and parking. Mark Edmonds from Taylor Wimpey gave a briefing on the

Could you take part in the ultimate showdown?

Past and present participants in the Towergate Accumulator Challenge line-up ready for the ultimate showdown this summer. From left: Jessica Darnell of The Coffee House; Megan Saggers of Abbeycroft Leisure; Paul Wells of Royal Mail; Paul Whittaker of Towergate Insurance; Keith Senior of Jacobs Allen; Michelle Frost of ASDA and Leah Morris of Royal Mail Picture by Andy Abbott

It is back for a fifth year – and things are about to get serious as businesses prepare for the ultimate showdown. The Towergate Accumulator Challenge, in aid of St Nicholas Hospice Care, kicks off in June and organisers are calling for businesses to get involved in the biggest battle yet. Since the first Accumulator Challenge in 2010 the hard-working and innovative firms taking part have raised more than £150,000 for the Hospice. At the start of the three-month annual challenge each business is handed £50 by event sponsors Towergate Insurance. They are then charged with turning it into as much money for the Hospice as possible. Hospice Corporate Fundraiser Abby Mayes is hoping to persuade as many businesses

as possible to join what she describes as ‘a summer of fun and fundraising’. “I’ve seen some very unusual fundraising ideas over the years and I have also seen a lot of smiles from those taking part,” she said. “The Accumulator Challenge has proved to be a good team-building exercise as well as a great business networking opportunity. But most of all, every penny that is raised helps to support people facing life-shortening illnesses and their families.” The firms which sign up will face off in the ultimate showdown and compete to win the top fundraiser prize. A range of other accolades – including most innovative idea and small business award – will also be presented at a finals night in September, when the total raised in the challenge will be revealed.

To get involved, contact Abby on 01284 715583 or email abby.mayes@stnh.org.uk

Moreton Hall’s Monthly Nature Watch by Woodland Ways

Moreton Hall’s Hedgehogs For such a small animal, hedgehogs range over a surprisingly large area and in a single night a male hedgehog can travel 2-3 kilometres. So the hedgehog that visits your garden will be roaming far and wide - and to do this they need interconnected patches of feeding, nesting and hibernating habitat. Hedgehogs have been seen all over Moreton hall, from Primark Road and Manning Road to Honeysuckle Way, and Brayfield Close to Bederic Close. Hedgehogs are thought to be declining in numbers nationally, partly perhaps due to gardens and open spaces being smaller and tidier than before, with little habitat for nesting or feeding. New fences cut off access to gardens, unless there are small gaps beneath. Piles of branches, and piles of twigs and leaves, are perfect nesting places and long grass or weedy areas provide worms and other invertebrates to munch. Woodland Ways leaves piles of wood in its

Wi air ne

woodlands fpr hedgehogs and other wildlife. In Suffolk hedgehogs are just managing to hold on in our towns, but declining faster in the countryside. When we see a dead hedgehog on the road its a disaster for that particular animal, but it is a monitoring tool – the more dead hedgehogs you see the bigger the population size is. But where exactly on Moreton Hall do hedgehogs live or visit? Are there some parts which are hedgehog heaven and are some parts devoid of this cute creature? Visit suffolkwildlifetrust.org and click on hedgehog survey to report your sighting of a hedgehog, whether it is passing through, dead on road, or even nesting nearby. This will help us to work out if there is anything more we can to do help.

SCHOOLS

At an open meeting held by our Residence Association the future of Moreton Hall New School was the spotlight. Everything lies in the hands of Suffolk County Councils Cabinet.

Ms Jo Stodart, Suffolk County Councils lead officer for the School Organisation Review told that St James had been chosen “as a fall back” if the new school did not go ahead. She also said that there was an awful lot of pressure on our upper schools and they were, close to capacity, most were land locked with no room for expansion and with the added year seven and eight, there would not be enough places. The future of Moreton Hall School depended on the outcome of a Cabinet decision due out on June 10th. If they give the green light, then the plan is to open the School in September 2016 but with only years 7, 8 and 9, comprising of about 120 pupils each. The long range forecast it to offer 700 more places to 11 to 16 year old’s, then by 2022 it would be large enough to have its own sixth form. Ms Stodart said that £12million has been ring fenced. There were a lot of if’s and but’s, Ms Stodart said if the decision is not to go ahead and we don’t get our new school, then St James Middle School becomes the fall back. Another if and but was that the school if built would not be controlled by Suffolk County Council but would be an Academy run by another organisation. A company has been put forward to Michael Grove the Minister for Education, for his approval. The future of our children education depends on this and some of the teachers who have given many years’ service. These SORs have been going on for five years and it’s affecting an awful lot of families; it’s about time it was settled on way or the other.

60 s ’ CLUB

Travellers OVER

After two weeks on the site at Rougham hill the travellers have moved back to the winter site off Barton Road. There is some confusion as to the ownership of this land and it would seem that County are happy to leave the travellers there until things are sorted out, about 16 weeks.

Don’t forget the club will be open on the 3rd June 11.30am until 1pm come and met some new friends.

INFRASTRUCTURE

At the open meeting, there was also a debate about the relief road as to when it should be started and when the new houses would be built. Taylor Wimpy are still waiting for St Edmundsbury Planning Department for the final decision on the Link Road. Some people who include Taylor Wimpy would like to run the development in tangent, which would seem to make sense, taking into account the amount of contractors vehicle movement during the construction of both projects. There are also some people, who insist that homes should not be built until the Link Road is completed, the debate goes on.

PARISH OR NOT

Four years ago myself and Cllr Springett asked if it was possible to have Moreton Hall made a Parish. This was put to one side as there were boundary changes being made. However this was brought up by Cllr Trevor Beckwith again at the meeting, where Trevor indicated that the £13 precept that we now pay to the town council would be better off spent on our estate. The rough figure of £40,000 would of course have to be used to pay for a part time parish clerk, leaving some £30,000 to be used on the estate, what do you think about this idea?

Until next time, Frank

Christ Church Moreton Hall There are many things we are looking forward to this summer. For some of us it will be our long awaited summer holiday in some sunny place overseas. For others it will be the world cup in Brazil and we will be hoping for an improvement on England’s recent dismal record. For myself, it will be the birth of our first grandchild in Manchester and the joy of seeing a new life brought into the world. The latest trend in spirituality is the ability to live in the moment. It is very sad to say there are millions of people who live in the past. They either long for a decade long gone when they were young or successful, or they have suffered a traumatic event which defines who they are now even though it happened tens of years ago. The scars have not healed and they are effectively walking wounded. Other people live permanently in the future. They either have such busy lives that they are always thinking about the next meeting they are going to, or the next piece of work they have to do, they never actually enjoy the thing they are doing at the moment. Then, of course, there are all those people who live

32

and work with retirement in mind or next year’s holiday; I’m not living now, but I will live then. There is an old proverb which says ‘yesterday is a memory, tomorrow is a dream, now is all you have’. The ability to live in the now and to enjoy what you are doing now, to understand what you are doing now, and perhaps more importantly, to understand and respond correctly to those around you now, is not just a better way to live, it’s essential for your own well-being and the good of those you love and care for.

why He reminds us that no one knows precisely when He will come back; it could be tomorrow. He also tells us that we can’t go back in history to put things right. The only way we can do that is to come to Him, ask for His forgiveness and work and live in His way from now on. As you look forward to what we hope will be a lovely, glorious summer, make sure you are fully connected to yourself, to those around you and, of course, to Jesus, and learn to live in the moment because once it’s gone, it will never come back. With every good wish,

Speaking of living in the now; thank you to all the people who went out, delivered and collected Christian aid envelopes, to another huge thank you those who filled them with money and gave them back. That is a good example of living in the now. You never know when a need will arise, and when someone unexpected will call. I can’t say how much came in but I will as soon as I can. Jesus calls us continually to live in the now. That is

Yours sincerely, Revd. Canon Jonathan Ford. Minister Christ Church Moreton Hall

What’s been happening at... Abbots Green Community Primary School Daisy and Buttercup Class (our two Reception Classes) have had great fun this month planting their own beans and learning all about what seeds need to grow. Armed with soil, trowels, plastic cups, and bean seeds they have each carefully planted their own bean and watered them well. Ella and Olivia really enjoyed this activity. Ella liked “to hold the big bean” and Olivia said “I like getting messy” as she put her bean into a pot full of soil. Henry added “I really like to grow seeds; I like putting a seed in the hole to grow into a plant or a flower.”

Their bean plants are now proudly on display on their classroom windowsill so that the children can look at them each day and check their progress.

The children have been learning that plants are living things and that they need certain conditions in which to grow healthily. We asked Alexander what a seed needs to make it grow into a plant -Alexander replied “seeds need light and warmth to grow.”

The children will continue to nurture their plants over the next few weeks this term watering them and measuring how tall their plants are growing. Hopefully very soon Daisy and Buttercup Classes will have beanstalks to rival Jack’s in the story of “Jack and The Beanstalk.”

Rebels Rule by Andrew Southwood Contrary to what you may have heard, I’m a bit of a swot. I play by the rules and get very uncomfortable if I’m ever forced to deviate from them at all.

Take parking for example. If the time on my ticket says I need to be back in 2 hours, I will always make sure I’m back at least ten minutes before that. The silly thing is, I realise the chances of getting a ticket are very low if I over run by a few minutes, but that wont stop me working myself into an anxious wreck at the thought of going over the time. With this in mind, try and imagine what I felt like when my impeccable record of never having received a parking fine in almost 20 years behind the wheel abruptly came to an end last month. Yes, technically my car was illegally abandoned outside A&E for 30 minutes, but it was 4am, and I did make sure I wasn’t obstructing the ambulances, and to be honest, the prospect of my third child being delivered on the cold

46

The Moreton Hall Directory

concrete steps leading up from the car park was probably even less appealing to my wife than it was to me. It was a rather hurried journey across town in the dead of night and I think I only saw one other vehicle, who must have thought I has had far much caffeine or taken something stronger. The slow monotonous phasing of the traffic lights under the A14 in the witching hour is a mystery and frankly, I looked at my wife, looked at the red lights and empty roads, and carried out a split second risk assessment. I’ve witnessed childbirth before and it’s not something I intend on allowing to happen in my car. The valeting costs alone would cripple me, and that’s before you look at the emotional scaring and potential resale implications!

So there it is. I can be a rebel when pushed hard enough (I think there might be a bad pun there somewhere?). Maybe it was exhaustion, or perhaps just the effects of the gas and air I shared with my wife, but it felt kind of good. That night I was running on adrenalin, allowing common sense, primal survival instincts and necessity to take precedence over ‘the rules’. And finally, for those that are interested, both mummy and baby were utterly amazing, and we were all back home within a few hours (via a slightly more leisurely drive back). Oh, and I appealed the ticket and they accepted the mitigating circumstances and reluctantly rescinded the ticket. I can walk the streets again (pushing a pram of course) my head held high, my 100% record remains intact… for now.

Interiors

Tony Cooper

Inspired

If you are looking to add some stylish accessories to brighten your home for summer or contemplating a complete room makeover, a new interiors shop in Bury St Edmunds is certainly worth a visit. Opened on 13th May, Blackthorpe House and Design is a luxury home accessories and giftware shop offering a gorgeous range of stylish and unusual finds for the home. Whether your taste is contemporary or traditional, owners Susie Carrington and Tony Cooper have travelled Europe to source beautiful and stylish finds and have the knack of putting unusual pieces together to create a really unique look for your home. Says Susie: “Our buying philosophy is simple: we only buy what we like, so it might be a beautiful scarf, a piece of jewellery, an object for the home, or a picture. We never buy too much of anything and rarely repeat it, so when it’s gone, it’s gone!” With more than 40 years experience, Tony started life as a textile designer producing fabrics for the likes of Liberty and John Lewis and later helped establish the successful Leaping Hare country store at Wyken vineyards. Positioned neatly between Gavin Ashley Hair and Maison Bleue in Churchgate Street, the new shop offers a showcase for the couple’s existing interior design partnership based at Blackthorpe House, a beautifully restored Georgian house on part of the Rougham estate which they also run as a small, luxury B&B.

Pauls Jobs for the Month General Maintenance l Keep running the hoe over any bare soil to keep the weeds down.

Lawn Maintenance l Lawns should be growing fast and will need cutting every 2 weeks. Trim the edges for a neat finish.

Herbs l Why pay a fortune for herbs in a supermarket when you can have a constant supply of fresh herbs growing in your garden or in a pot. Fill the pot with a soil based compost mixed with lots of grit. Choose your herbs- Rosemary Oregano Thyme Lavender Sage and Marjoram all grow well in pots.

Flower Garden l Tie in perennials such as dahlias and delphiniums to avoid them being flattened by strong winds. l Deadhead your rose bushes regularly, cut the flower head right back to the first leaf you come to. This will ensure a succession of flowers through the summer

Foxgloves can be biennials but are usually short-lived perennials forming a rosette of simple leaves with bell-shaped flowers in slender, erect form. They will grow in almost any soil but it is best to avoid very wet or very dry areas. They can be grown in partial shade or full sun. Deadhead after flowering if you wish to avoid lots of seedlings.

Vegetable and Fruit Garden l You can plant tomatoes and courgettes in the vegetable bed. l Continue to make sowings of salad crops such as lettuce, spring onions and rocket l Your runner beans will need some support. I usually put in a couple of rows 2ft apart. I like to use 8ft tall bamboo canes and bend these into the centre to form an A frame. I also tie in additional canes along the length of the canes about 2 ft off the ground to give the framework more solidity and give the beans more chance to climb. l Plant out Brussel sprouts and leeks l Earth up potatoes l The fruits on your strawberries will have many admirers . Keep the birds off with suitable netting. Keep the fruit off the ground by using straw or newspaper around your plants.

“It’s beautiful the Summer month of June When all of God’s own wildflowers are in bloom And sun shines brightly most part of the day And butterflies o’er lush green meadows play. Light hearted skylark songster of the wing High o’er the quiet and lonely moorland sing Above her nest cloaked by the tangled heath Her charming song so exquisitely sweet. So mellow the gentle breath of June day breeze The birds rejoicing on the leafy trees And dappled trout in pool bed of the stream Bask in the sun their spotted skins agleam.” - Francis Duggan, June

home & lifestyle Below: Gemma, Sally and 2 of the ladies that attended the ladies golf taster day

Over 20 ladies took part in the 2.30pm session at Bury St Edmunds Golf Club

LADIES GOLF TASTER DAY AT BURY ST EDMUNDS GOLF CLUB by Gemma Procter When Sally and I heard that Bury St Edmunds Golf Club were holding a ladies taster day, we thought it would be fun to give it a try.

The Club’s PGA Professional Mark Jillings kicked off the session with a quick instruction on the basics of golf and how to hold the club.

You see, I’m a bit of a golf widow and you know how the saying goes, “if you can’t beat them, join them”.

We then moved on to perfecting our golf swing (well attempting to actually hit the ball was a good start), hitting hundreds of balls on the practice range.

I’ll hold my hands up and say I’ve often looked at the game of golf and thought ‘my goodness, that looks boring’ – give me shopping any day. But, I’m happy to admit that I was completely wrong!

Next we tried out a spot of putting on the putting greens until we were ready to play our first hole of actual golf, move over Rory McIlroy.

Sally perfects her golf swing

The next day, Sally and I ached in places we didn’t know we could ache, but we really enjoyed our golf taster. As well as being a great way to keep up your fitness levels, it’s also incredibly sociable. So if you’re looking for a hobby to take up, some starter lessons at the Golf Club would be a great place to start. The Bury St Edmunds Golf Club have excellent facilities for ladies golf and plenty of female members, so you’ll never be short of friends for a game.

Ladies, if you would like more information about this fantastic hobby, please contact Bury St Edmunds Golf Club

Film release of the month

22 JUMP STREET

Starring: Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill

Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill return as undercover buddy cops in this riotous sequel to the hit comedy, 21 Jump Street. Much to the disappointment of sneery Deputy Chief Hardy (Nick Offerman), officers Jenko (Channing Tatum) and Schmidt (Jonah Hill) are back on undercover duty. This time they’re assigned to investigate a college drugs ring. All the original team are reunited by returning directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who had a huge hit with ‘The LEGO Movie’.

DVD RELEASE OF THE MONTH - ROBOCOP

Starring: Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Abbie Cornish, Samuel L. Jackson, Joel Kinnaman The satirical sci fi classic about a conflicted cyborg cop gets a spectacular 21st century makeover. The year is 2028 and crime is out of control on the streets of America. Egged on by opinionated TV pundit Pat Novak (Samuel L. Jackson), the sinister OmniCorp proposes a solution. The corporation has already deployed its hi-tech drones and fighting robots on the streets of Tehran. Now evil CEO Raymond Sellars (Michael Keaton) plans to bring the technology home. Devoted husband and father of two Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) is a dedicated cop working the streets of Detroit. When he’s severely injured in a car bombing, OmniCorp scientist Dr. Dennett Norton (Gary Oldman) saves his life. As RoboCop, Alex finds he has incredible new abilities. But being half-man and half-machine brings unique challenges. Brazilian director Jose Padilha has assembled a brilliant cast for his skilful, action-packed update of Paul Verhoeven’s eighties dystopian masterpiece. The Moreton Hall Directory

The moreton hall community centre news Thank you to all those who came down and supported the 4th Moreton Hall Bury Darts Open, and a huge thank you to Colin Houghton for organising it. The eventual winner was Jason Mold, finishing on a bulls-eye, and our runner up was Mark Cranham – congratulations to both, and to all players who took part. Thank you also to our sponsors: Greene King, Chilvers, Secelec, Marshall Buck and Casson and Colin Greene & Associates. It was a fantastic day at the Centre, and we are already making plans for next year! First and foremost in many people’s minds for events happening in June is of course the World Cup. We will be showing all the England matches in the clubroom, and as in previous years it is a members only event – if you are not a paid member (those who hold an over 65 membership count as paid members) you will not be able to get access to the clubroom for the matches. This is to ensure that it is fair for all members who want to come and watch the matches on the big screen, as we do have a fire limit capacity that is likely to be reached with all those wanting to come down and watch the England matches! For the first match, which is on at 11pm on the 14th June, because we have a function in the hall we have a more limited capacity, so this match only will require those members who want to watch the match to put down a fully refundable deposit of £5 to get a voucher that will permit them access from 5pm to the clubroom. When you turn up to watch the match, your £5 will be refunded then. These vouchers are available at the bar and are only available to members! The rest of the matches will also be members only, but will not require a ticket like the 14th June. There is a best seat in the house promotion being organised, with a fabulous, lavishly comfortable sofa being loaned from Glasswells for the event. There will be lots of bottled drink promotions, and of course we will be serving food throughout the matches from our specially organised world cup menu! The England matches scheduled for June are England vs Italy Saturday June 14th at 11pm, England vs Uruguay Thursday June 19th at 8pm and England vs Costa Rica Tuesday June 24th at 5pm. See our members emails for more details! On to events – on Saturday 7th June, in the spirit of the world cup we are holding a samba party in the clubroom! Free entry, and all welcome who want to have a bit of a salsa inspired dance! We will be serving caipirinhas at a special price to get us into the Brazilian vibe, then our DJ Lee will be showcasing some smooth Latin American music (as well as, when the night goes on a little bit of cheese to tamper the evening!). Starts from roughly 8pm! On Saturday 21st June we are holding another one of our in house darts competitions. Registration starts at 7pm, it’s £5 to enter and all entrance fees go towards the cash prizes for the victors. After the Darts Open held in May this year it’ll be a good way for all those who just missed

out to come back and play again! On Sunday June 22nd we are hosting a rounders tournament for all ages! We will be playing on the field next to the clubroom and there’s no fee to join in. Just come along for a day of fun, with a handy bar located just ten metres away from you! In July we’ve got much more lined up for you – on 5th July we have another round of our Saturday night Bingo, which starts from 7pm with a few games for chocolatey and other such goodies, then we start on playing for a little bit of spending money! On July 12th we have a quiz night, which has been lovingly prepared by the club committee! £1 per person to enter with a maximum of 6 on a team; it’s sure to be varied and interesting quiz, so make sure you enter! As ever, there are cash prizes up for grabs to make it well worth your while to flex that brain power... On 19th July we’re trying some new entertainment in the clubroom in the form of a circus workshop for kid’s, with 2 sessions where they can try their hand at learning some circus skills! There will be a fully checked tutor who will endeavour to teach the art of poi, juggling, diablos sticks and more. As ever with our events it’s free to get in, and there will be 2 sessions on the 19th – one starting at 4pm for younger kids up to 8 years old, and the later session at 6pm for older kids up to 12 years – both sessions last an hour! And then later on in the evening of the 19th July we have booked a magical comedy cabaret act Melton Mowbray to entertain you all! He will perform from 9pm in the evening, and as ever it is free entry! On 27th July we are holding our annual Family Funday, starting at 11am and finishing at about 5pm. Save the date in your diary! We have a climbing wall, zorb balls, helter skelter, various inflatable obstacle courses, stalls, a five aside football tournament as well as the annual grand raffle draw that as in previous years will feature some brilliant prizes. The bar is open of course and our chef will be firing up the BBQ. Now that summer is getting underway, we’re happy to be able to put on lots of events for different groups, use the field for various sporting competitions, offer lots of food promotions and generally do our best to ensure that you, the member, gets the best out of your local club. With that in mind.... See you all soon!
