Top Tips for Reducing Stress

In general, the term “I’m stressed” crops up when we feel overwhelmed or unable to cope; when there is too much to do, or when we feel threatened emotionally or physically. But what can we do about stress? How can we keep our cool in what sometimes seems to be an increasingly fast paced and stressful world? 1. Remember the difference between external pressure and internal stress It’s important to understand that there is a big difference between external pressure and internal stress. Internal stress, that overwhelming or tense feeling that we experience when we say we are stressed, is our response to external pressure. Sometimes we are unable to do anything about the external pressure and we feel helpless. We can however learn to manage our response to external pressure and therefore looks towards reducing our own internal stress. Looking at things from this perspective is an excellent start to managing your own stress levels. 2. Reconnect with nature Research clearly shows that time spent outside in “green spaces” improves our mood and reduces stress. The benefits are reported to be even higher if the space incorporates water, such as a river, lake or the ocean. Even looking at a picture of a forest for 10 minutes rather than gazing at a computer, has some positive effect. So switch off your television or computer, turn off your mobile phone, and give your

brain some space from electronics by connecting with the great outdoors. At the very least, this is a great way to create some space from external pressures, allowing us time to gain perspective and choose our responses calmly. 3. Accept that you are not perfect In today’s society a great deal of stress is born by everyone trying to reach perfection. The perfect romance, leading to the perfect family, in the perfect home, with the perfect lawns and perfect furnishings, all supplied by working in the perfect job, where everyone get’s along perfectly and everything works perfectly. Okay, so that’s extreme, but you get the picture. Perfection doesn’t exist, so give yourself a break, lighten up and embrace the beauty of imperfection. It’s okay to get things wrong, it’s okay to be unhappy sometimes, and it’s okay to admit you need support. In fact, it’s more than okay, it’s human!

This month we look at the issues faced by new mums

Are you a mum-in-training or about to have a baby? Are you starting to feel out of your depth? Do you sometimes wish for your old life back? Being pregnant is a very special time for most women and it can be exciting looking forward to holding your little baby in your arms. You will be impatient to meet him or her for the first time. However, the reality is that once your baby arrives your whole world is turned upside down never to be the same again – this can be a wonderful experience, yet also scary and can lead to feeling somewhat out of your depth. The first year of your baby’s life can be amazing and beautiful, full of rich new experiences. Looking after a baby is hard physical and emotional work. There are challenges to overcome such as exhaustion, the changes in your body, being at home with the baby instead of your place of work and the complete change of your life style which can sometimes feel overwhelming. However, it doesn’t have to ‘feel’ hard and hard doesn’t need to have a negative association, the rewards are great and the sense of purpose and achievement can be enormously fulfilling – it can be the magical event that you foresaw. It’s all about how you look at your experience and

consequently how it makes you feel. In my experience one of the main things new mum’s struggle with is their feelings following the birth of their baby. Establishing a more relaxed and optimistic mindset beforehand can ensure that your thoughts and feelings during birth and afterwards are more positive. If you are able to let go of needing to be in control of what happens every step of the way and accept what has already happened, then once your baby has arrived you can just deal with things as they occur. You will then significantly reduce your stress levels, feel happier within yourself and as a result your baby will too. The expectation of what you think should happen and the kind of mother you think you should be can be a huge pressure to put upon yourself. Acceptance can go a long way to reducing anxiety and bringing peace of mind. Being able to accept that you are not supermum and are doing the best job you can and even accepting help from others can go a long way to relieving some of that pressure. Also, being able to accept your baby as they are can be very freeing. If beforehand we have a list of what we think should happen –

my baby will be smiling within a few weeks; she will have lots of hair; will sleep through the night ........ then we may be sorely disappointed and perhaps stressed out, as babies are little individuals just like us and develop at their own unique pace. So how do I overcome the challenges of being a new mum? • Reduce or even remove your expectations; • Exercise acceptance of what is and what you cannot change; • Be kind to yourself by nurturing you as well as your baby; • Enjoy being a mum. Give yourself permission to bask in the beauty of the miracle that has happened and bless the gift you have received. If you are wondering how on earth you are going to be able to reduce your stress levels, and feel better about yourself whilst adjusting to caring for your baby

Simple Fish Cakes Cook time: 30 min

Serves: 3

Ingredients 1 small onion , finely chopped 500g fish fillets, skinned 350ml white wine or fish stock 500g mashed potatoes parsley, tarragon or dill or a mix chopped to make 1-2 tbsp flour for dusting 1 egg, beaten fresh or dried breadcrumb, to coat oil for frying

Once the preserve of dodgy chippies, fish cakes are now smart dinner party fodder

Method 1. Put the onion in a large frying pan, sit the fish on top and pour the wine or stock over. Bring to a gentle simmer, cover and cook the fish for 6-8 minutes or until cooked through. Remove and cool. Strain out the onion (keep the wine or stock if you are making the sauce, right) and mix into the mashed potato with the herbs. 2. Flake in the fish in decent-sized chunks and season. Gently mix everything and, using floured hands, shape into 8 cakes. Lightly dust with flour, dip in egg and then in breadcrumbs. Chill for at least 30 minutes (important or they will come apart in the pan). 3. Heat 1cm oil in a large frying pan. Fry the fish cakes in batches for 3-4 minutes each side or until they are golden, crisp and heated through. Drain on kitchen paper.

Serve with a simple salad, some homemade chips and tartare sauce, delicious! themhd

March is a good time to hear tawny owls on Moreton Hall. They can be heard in the evening or at night, calling from our woods with that well-known tu-whoooo call. This call is the male, trying to attract females and simultaneously warning other males that he lives there and they should leave. The rarely heard tu-whit is the female tawny owl, replying to her male. More often than not, the mole can be heard moving around our woods, even the younger woodss, whilst asserting his territory. Tawny owls nest in hollows in large ivy-covered trees, of which there remain a few in Moreton Hall; although a nest location has not yet been identified the amount of calling indicates that these beautiful chestnutbrown predators must nest somewhere on the estate. They will nest in boxes installed for the purpose, so there may be merit in putting an owl box in a tree in a likely situation.

Tawny owls hunt at dusk but more commonly at night. Their wings are almost silent and this ‘sound-proofing’ allows them to surprise small rodents like mice, voles and even rats. They are also adaptable enough to take small birds and amphibians when food is short. Starlings and grey squirrels are sometimes caught, particularly in urban areas such as ours where other food might be scarce. The long-grass areas at Natterer’s Wood and Woodland Ways Pond are good hunting areas, because there are plenty of bank voles present for the owls to eat. Typically, tawny owls occupy a favourite perch in broadleaf woodlands, from which they drop on to unsuspecting small mammals, such as voles. The inedible remains are regurgitated in the form of a pellet. It is possible to pull a pellet apart, and from the bones work out what that animal had eaten a few hours earlier!

I notice previous appeals to dog walkers seem to have made no difference. In all the places I have lived I have never known it so bad.” There you have it, your area, your estate, most of your children are at risk. Be responsible clear up after your dogs. I have forwarded this letter to the council to get extra dog and litter bins in that area. Thanks to the letter writer whoever you are, we are trying.

As you may know this will be a very busy time of the year with the Royal Wedding, Bank holidays and lots of other events, some people may be on holiday. So again can I remind you that if you are going to be away or unable to go to vote, then please request your postal vote. You can fill it in and get it off at your leisure and most important you wont miss your vote. If you don’t know what to do or where to go, contact me, you have my details. Please use your vote and remember that the borough and town councils deal in local issues not national. Once again the Borough council will not be increasing domestic rates.

At last, work has started on the safety path from the car park near the church. I was asked almost 18 months ago if was possible to have a pathway from the car park because mums were having trouble taking their children to school. Work has started and by the time you read this the pathway will be complete. Hopefully mums will be happier and safer now.

Jenny our President opened with some good news to be shared and some notices of future events. Elizabeth informed us of the Maternal Health event from Public Affairs on 23rd Feb and tickets were available. Our Speaker this month was John Hewson, an experienced gardener of many years who got us thinking about our gardens and the advent of Spring! He illustrated his talk with some photos of his garden and from his trips to Chelsea Flower Show and Wisley and even gave some tips on equipment. Some of us can only aspire to such success! We learned of the old and now banned substances used in gardens – red lead and creosote to name but two! We heard of his work on the naval base in Portsmouth and nearer home in Mildenhall advising service personnel. We finished off with our usual refreshments and a chat. A lovely evening! The Master Composter by Paul Turner

Welcome to the Master Composter feature, where I will tell you about the joys of composting. I am a Master Composter Volunteer, which means that I have been trained by a charity called Garden Organics, in association with Suffolk County Council, and I devote my spare time to encouraging and assisting everyone to compost more. From the complete novice to the veteran composter, if you have a question about composting, then I will use this page to answer them.

“Getting children involved in composting” There is nothing like composting to get the children interested and involved in gardening and outdoor activities. Let’s face it, a pile of compost with hundreds of mini beasts will grab the attention of most kids and the method we get to a crumbly, rich brown compost should attract our next generation to understanding the importance of keeping organic waste out of the landfill. It also involves dirt, digging, and water -favourite children’s activities. One of the easiest ways to teach kids to recycle is through composting. This earth friendly activity is a great way to help kids go green. If you haven’t already got a compost bin have a discussion as a family about starting one in the

garden. It’s a great way to bond as a family and the decisions can be made democratically. Decide whether you are going to make your own bin or purchase one? Making composts can be rewarding and educational as well as cost effective if you salvage wood and other materials. Consider the idea of using a wormery instead of a compost bin, especially if space is limited. It wants to be easily accessible, even in the cold wet months of winter, and ideally be placed on bare soil to allow the worms access. Some direct sunlight is good to heat up the contents of the bin as this will

speed up the decomposition process. If you want, suggest to your child those criteria and then let them work out the best place for the bin to go. With the whole family involved you want to make sure everyone knows what can go into the compost mix. Having a caddy in the kitchen for vegetable and fruit peelings is an easy way to collect waste. Draw or stick pictures of things that can go into the caddy and attach it to the fridge.

It also provides air pockets inside the bin which allows the process to work better. While out in the garden get the children to help out and mix the prunings, grass clippings and leaves in with some kitchen waste and straw if you have some. I would advise using protective gloves and eye protection while they do this and while filling the compost with the new material. A broomstick can be used to make holes in the material that has settled to allow air to circulate again. This is an easier option than digging the entire heap into another pile. Remember, explain that a compost needs Food, water, oxygen and heat, much the same as us. Just the same as baking a cake we need to make sure that we add all the right ingredients, in the right quantities and make sure they get mixed correctly. Then have the right heat make the cake the right consistency at the end. If we add too much water or soft sappy materials then our compost cake will be sloppy and unpleasant. Too dry and much of the ingredients will look the same as when we put them into the bin. After 6 months to a year some of the compost should have matured to a lovely brown, rich crumbly soil. Remove the layers of material that is still decomposing and place it back into the bin. Then get the children to help you spread the compost over your flower beds, mulch around permanent plants to keep down weeds or mix with leaf mould, general purpose compost or soil to create your own potting compost. Producing compost in their backgarden should naturally lead onto the use of the finished compost in the garden and hopefully a life of activity for the next generation making beautiful gardens out of the ultimate recycled product. Trek the Inca Trail for the Hospice Two intrepid explorers set out from St Nicholas Hospice Care this week to launch the charity’s latest fundraising trek - to Peru. Chief Executive Barbara Gale and Trusts and Statutory Funding officer Ben O’Hanlon ventured to Hardwick Heath, in Bury St Edmunds, equipped with walking boots, sticks, guide book and, of course, Peru’s most famous former resident Paddington Bear.

Despite the fact the Heath is thousands of miles away from the South American country, Barbara and Ben they did their best to envisage what lies in store for those who trek the famous Inca Trail in aid of the Hospice. The pair hope their efforts will persuade others to sign up for the trek, which takes place in May 2012. Barbara said: “The Peru trek is a great opportunity for people to raise money for the Hospice but also enjoy a fantastic ‘once in a lifetime’ experience. Those who take part will see sights far more breathtaking than Hardwick Heath.” Jenny Baskett, the Hospice’s Challenges and Events Fundraiser, said: “The Hospice’s treks are always fun and a great experience. The Peru challenge will offer a chance to try new things, meet new people and raise thousands of pounds for the Hospice.” The 10-day trip to Peru, from 5-14 May 2012, will give offer four days of trekking the incredible Inca Trail to Macchu Picchu, the chance to explore the ancient site and discover more about the Inca civilisation and spend free time in the historical city of Cusco. Participants are asked to raise a minimum of £3,250 in sponsorship money, which can incorporate paying their own costs of £1,675 and raising a minimum of £1,575 in sponsorship. Jenny added: “Don’t be put off. With more than a year still to go, there is plenty of time to raise the amount needed. You can treat the trek as your annual holiday or organise some fundraising events of your own to pay for the trip. It is really good that the Prince and his fiancée are setting such a good example by first of all marrying, and secondly by doing so in church. All the evidence shows that those who get married seem to enjoy life more and live longer. It is also true that children who grow up within a stable relationship, particularly a married one, seem to do better at school and have better and happier lives. VISION 2013

As chairman of the Residents’ Association I trust that as many residents as possible will have taken part in the various drop in meetings that have taken place during February. This should have been a wonderful ‘once in a generation’ opportunity to ensure that all things that we like about living in this wonderful town are retained and that the bad points receive the attention they require. We cannot stand still as a town and it is essential that we plan for the inevitable growth and the demographic changes. The consultation process of Vision 2013 allows residents and other interested parties to influence the way in which these changes are catered for. The initial consultation process is not complete and there are workshops on the 12th March for both Moreton Hall & Compeigne Way. Attendance at these meetings is subject to registration and if you are unable to attend please let the Residents’ Association know of your concerns and they will be taken into consideration by Committee members who will attend. Please see our new website and note that committee members are spread through out the estate and I am sure your local member would be pleased to have you get to know them. Please come along to the Public Meeting and we will explain how the process continues from here.

The best kept secret in West Suffolk! The society was initially formed around 30 years ago by James Recknell, Director of Music at Culford School to provide alto, tenor and bass adult voice parts to complement the School treble/ soprano Chapel Choir for services. Culford Choral Society now has around 35 regular singing adult members covering all four voice parts, rehearsing on Monday nights at the School 7.45 – 9.45 pm during Term time under James Recknell’s direction and is supported by the School. We perform three concerts annually in the School around Easter, Mid Summer and Christmas. The Easter concert programme is a major choral work with full Orchestra and Professional soloists with additional chorus from The Mildenhall Team Choir and pupils of the Culford School Chamber Choir. We will perform Haydn’s Creation on Sunday evening March 13th 2011 at 7.30 pm (see advertisement for ticket details) and would love to meet up with you there. The Summer concert is generally a lighter programme of ballads, Gilbert and Sullivan, Musical Show ensembles (Monday evening June 20th 2011) and the Christmas concert is a blend of audience carols, readings and choir carols/pieces (Sunday evening December 3rd 2011) followed by refreshments provided by choir members. Moreton Hall residents prepare for Crazy for You SHOW-stopping numbers, eye-catching costumes and highenergy dancing will take audiences at the Theatre Royal by storm when the Irving Stage Company’s next production hits the stage. Crazy for You tells the story of Bobby Child, a well-to-do 1930s playboy whose dream in life is to dance. And despite the efforts of his mother and soon-to-be-ex-fiancé, Bobby eventually achieves his dream. In the last three years, the Irving’s productions of Guys and Dolls, Chess and Sweeney Todd have played to packed houses at the Westgate Street Regency theatre. This year, the male lead is being taken by Moreton Hall resident Marc Kerr, of Tassel Road. Former King Edward VI School pupil Marc, 26, has been involved with the Irving Stage Company for many years. He is planning to move to London in May to pursue acting professionally, so this could be his last show in Bury. “I wanted to play the part of Bobby because I was really excited about the challenge of tap dancing. I have never done it before so I wanted to put myself to the test,” he said. “I’ve been working hard to learn not just the basic tap steps, but some of the more advanced ones, because I want to make Marc Kerr Crazy for You a good show for myself and everyone else in it.” “Bobby has got some cheeky numbers, so the audience can expect to see some fun song and dances.” Other Moreton Hall residents set to tread the boards in Crazy for You include Nick Templeton, Kathryn Smith, Nicki Stapleton and Camille Berriman.
