Hello
We hope you all had a lovely Easter break and didn’t eat too much chocolate. Well, if you’re anything like us, you obviously needed to just ‘sample’ each egg the kids received (you know, to make sure it’s not poisonous). The diet starts again once the house is rid of the last one! With Summer fast approaching, we felt a floral theme for this months hotpicks would get you all in the mood – see our favourite floral delights on the opposite page. Warmer days though reminds us that we must keep hydrated, see page 10 for many reasons to keep topped up on the water, not just to quench the thirst, but there are so many other health benefits too, and it’s FREE!

Reflexology for Parkinson’s Disease One person in every 500 has Parkinson’s. That’s about 127,000 people in the UK. Symptoms and how quickly they progress are different for everyone. There is currently no cure but drugs and treatments are available to manage many symptoms. Complimentary therapies are treatments used alongside conventional medicine. Reflexology can be helpful when used to support traditional treatments of Parkinson’s. For example, it can stimulate the saliva glands and tear ducts which are often suppressed as a result of Parkinson’s medications, and can also help to relieve Constipation. Although the effects are unique to each person, reflexology can promote relaxation, improve circulation, stimulate vital organs and encourage the body’s natural healing processes. It can also speed up the elimination of harmful Toxins from the body, as well as boosting the production of natural chemicals in the brain. There are many reasons why people may use complementary therapies alongside prescribed medication, including: • they feel conventional medicine isn’t controlling their symptoms • they view complementary therapy as a way of taking control of their own healing • they find complementary therapies relaxing. This can be very useful as stress can make Parkinson’s symptoms worse Although the effects are unique to each person, reflexology can promote relaxation, improve circulation, stimulate vital organs and encourage the body’s natural healing processes. It can also speed up the elimination of harmful Toxins from the body, as well as boosting the production of natural chemicals in the brain. People have become more open to trying the various treatments on offer and improve their over-all health, as well as the specific condition. Call me to arrange a treatment session or visit me at the Parkinson’s charity event on Sunday 18th May for a taster session with proceeds going to Parkinson’s UK.

8 Reasons
You Probably Need To Be
Drinking More Water
We’ve all had that feeling at the end of a long day – headachy, tired, groggy – and it’s often because we haven’t drank enough water. We’re constantly told by health experts that we need to drink around 8 glasses (2 litres) per day to keep healthy and replace the fluids we lose through sweating etc, but why choose water over other drinks?
#1 Water Gets Rid Of Toxins
The body removes toxins from the body through sweat and urine – keeping hydrated helps keep this process flowing, making it especially important to drink water when you are feeling under the weather.
#2 Water Aids Digestion
Not drinking enough can lead to constipation – water helps the process of digestion making sure your body is getting rid of waste regularly.
#3 Water Improves Skin
Not only does water help your body on the inside, but it shows on the outside. Water helps to keep skin looking plump, hydrated and youthful. The cheapest anti-ageing product on the market!
#4 Water Improves Concentration
Just like the rest of your body, your brain needs to keep hydrated in order to function to the best of its ability. Top up your fluid levels to keep focused, alert and up your energy levels in general.
#5 Water Helps Your Joints
It’s important to drink water in order to keep joints and muscles healthy – especially when exercising! Lack of fluids can contribute to a painful condition in the joints called gout, where acidic crystals build up.

#6 Water Can Aid Weight Loss
Yes, it’s true! As well as being calorie free, water is actually a natural appetite suppressant. Dehydration can also trick the body into thinking it’s hungry – meaning you may eat when you should be drinking.
#7 Water Keeps Teeth Healthy
Water, especially tap water, is a fantastic source of Fluoride which strengthens teeth and makes them resistant to decay.
#8 Water Helps Your Immune System
Water makes sure that your blood carries the optimal amount of oxygen to each organ, keeping your body in top condition and able to fight off infection – making you less likely to get ill. Ultimately, water is fuel for the body – drinking the right amount each day will give the body the tools it needs to keep everything ticking over.

vitality.
Director, The Self Centre
A combination of dietary tips, mind/body exercises and latest Research blended together to promote health & vitality. This month we look at how Speech and Language Therapy can help both adults and children. What is speech and language therapy?
Speech and language therapy is an intervention service for children and young people (and adults) with communication difficulties, (and also eating and drinking difficulties). The aim of therapy is to enable children and young people to reach their fullest potential in terms of their speech, language and communication development, which in turn will enable them to function and participate more fully in all aspects of daily life. It is sometimes mistakenly thought that speech and language therapy is only for children with articulation difficulties or conditions such as a stammer. In fact, speech and language therapy can benefit children and young people with all types of speech, language or communication impairment, including difficulties with understanding language or maintaining conversations. It can also help adults who shy away from speaking in public and giving presentations etc.
WORDSWELL is a specialist speech and language company that covers East Anglia
They have a bespoke treatment room based here at the self centre and have special interests in hearing impairment, autistic spectrum conditions, dyslexia, speech, language and communication needs and voice feminisation.
Specific conditions that speech and language therapy can help with:
Over half of the children we work with have an autistic spectrum condition. Other children have spoken and written speech, language and communication needs associated with dyslexia or deafness. Others have learning needs. Many have complex needs, which may also include emotional, behavioural and social needs such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. We have adult clients with acquired motor speech needs as a result of Huntington’s disease, Motor Neurone Disease, Parkinson’s disease or stroke. Other clients may have acquired speech and language needs such as aphasia due to traumatic brain injury or stroke.
Adult clients may also have speech, language and communication needs because they are deaf or have cerebral palsy. Some have a dysfluency (stammer). Some have dysphagia (problems swallowing).
Benefits of speech and language therapy
Your progress is regularly reviewed, usually every 3-6 months, to provide you with evidence of your or your child’s development as a basis for discussion and to refine your treatment programme if necessary. It also provides an opportunity to discuss and explore with you whether there are any other therapies, which can help. In this way you know we are constantly trying to find the best possible package of integrated and co-ordinated treatment for you and your child.
How it works
The ability to communicate is central to all that you do, to who you are, how you learn and how you relate to others. Speech and language therapy is the process of enabling you to communicate to the best of your ability ... Here at Wordswell, we look at the needs of both you and your family ... treating the cause of the problem as well as the symptoms whenever possible. So, when you know that you have a problem with speech, language or communication, you need to be sure that you can access the speech and language services you need ... NOW. You see, at Wordswell we want to understand your whole problem and we make time to listen to you and discuss all your concerns throughout your involvement with us. We have developed comprehensive assessment and therapy services which are always based on current theory and best practice ... so you can be sure that you will receive the best therapy for your particular condition.
What happens in a session?
Your assessment may be undertaken as part of your therapy package as a baseline from which to measure future progress or it may be an in-depth evaluation carried out in several settings and lasting 2-3 hours. You will be pleased to hear that
The remedies and advice suggested in this article are the personal opinion of the author. Please also inform your GP if you are planning to take any natural remedies and you are already on long term prescribed drugs.

health & beauty your therapy, if needed, can begin immediately after your assessment and will continue uninterrupted for as long as necessary so that we can build rapport and a personal relationship with you and develop a programme specifically tailored to your needs. You will receive practical suggestions and ideas for activities, which can be carried out at home in between sessions to maximise your progress. A variety of products are available to purchase should you wish to re-create your ‘Wordswell’ experience in your own home to support your child’s learning and progression. Our Wordswell Sensory Box includes everything you need for stimulating all the senses.
Very young children can be seen with their main carer on a regular basis at the clinic or at home or nursery. Activities to develop speech and language are demonstrated and discussed during these sessions, which are followed up by parents in between sessions.

Free discussions happen at the Wordswell clinic in Little Downham or the Self Centre in Bury St Edmunds but can also happen by telephone or Skype. When you arrive at the clinic, our therapists will introduce themselves to you and offer refreshments. We will ask you to tell us about your situation and ask for detailed case history information. We will then discuss what your options are including how Wordswell can help and outline some of the things we can both do. This month Sue Lucente advises us on how to deal with hayfever... Spring is here, the sun is shining, longer days and more outdoor activities. Great, but not for those who suffer from hay fever. Don’t panic, rushing to the pharmacy for antihistamines and locking yourself inside with the doors and windows shut is fortunately, not the only answer. There are approximately 15 million hay fever sufferers in the UK, 90 percent of whom have a problem with grass pollen. It’s not all bad news as there are many things you can do to help reduce the symptoms naturally. Foods rich in antioxidants some of which are known as flavonoids, carotenes and vitamin C can help to inhibit the release of histamine in the body. They can also help to protect the nasal passages from irritation. There are a variety of foods containing these antioxidants, these include pears, apples, pineapple, kiwi, strawberries, citrus fruits, butternut squash and green leafy vegetables such as kale. Omega 3 fatty acids have an anti- inflammatory effect and are found in oily fish such as salmon and mackerel, if you do not like fish Omega 3 can be taken in a supplement form. This could help to reduce the inflammatory symptoms in the mucosal membrane of the nose and eyes that occurs during a hay fever reaction. Ginger is also a powerful ant-inflammatory that can help reduce inflammation in the nasal passage. Grate some fresh ginger into hot water and drink it as a tea. Help to support your immune system by encouraging the growth of good bacteria in the gut. A strong immune system will help improve your defences against allergens. Avoid sugar, this is often hidden in drinks and processed foods that you consume without thinking about the amount of sugar that they contain. If you feel that you need to top up on these healthy bacteria there are supplements available, the capsule form is far better than the drinks as they contain far more good bacteria without the addition of sugar. Everyone should be able to go out and enjoy a little of the sunshine without the uncomfortable reactions that hay fever can cause. Eat well and enjoy the summer.

Why Cheat? As stories come out about runners taking short cuts in the London Marathon I ask the question why cheat? Two stories have come out so far of Jason Scotland-Williams 34 who is currently being investigated after finishing the London Marathon in a time of 3:08.47 running the second half in a time quicker than Olympic gold medalist and eighth-placed Mo Farah, and 74 year old Frank Staples who ran the second half of his London Marathon just seven minutes slower than Paula Radcliffe. Anyone who decides to take on the challenge of a marathon has my upmost respect, however, why cheat when the only person you’re cheating is yourself? Before I start writing about how you can relate this to yourselves please note, I do give my clients and myself cheat meals, and allow treats but this is planned and worked for. Think about gym workouts and food choices you make, are you cheating
yourself? I see too many people in the gym using momentum, poor form, too long a rest in between sets, not training hard enough, all these factors and many more are affecting the results you will achieve in the gym. Why take the time out to go to the gym only then to not use the time wisely to push your body to the maximum potential. Food - Others I know train really hard, do great workouts then cheat on the food choices they make. Why? You’ve done the hard work now fuel your body with good food not rubbish. I could go into many more factors such as alcohol, training plans and intensity but I’ll save this for another day. If you feel like you’re currently cheating yourself and not getting the results you want because of this. Get in touch and I will help you.

To celebrate, Abbeycroft Leisure, which manages Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre in partnership with St Edmundsbury Borough Council, has lined up a host of activities in Charter Square and the Apex, in conjunction with Activating CIC. The weekend of activities, supported by Abbeycroft’s media partner the Bury Free Press, will be a celebration of cycling and sport and, in line with the aims of the Suffolk Most Active County campaign, hopes to encourage people to get back on their bike, explore the beautiful cycle paths of Suffolk and get active. Bury St Edmunds may not have any mountains but mountain biking will be coming to the town. On Saturday 10 May from 9am to 5pm, there will be a portable mountain bike track called Total Trax in Charter Square offering children the chance to experience exhilarating off-road riding. Rollerdrome, a unique new cycle sport founded on a hundred years of cycle roller racing tradition will also be in Charter Square. It offers four participants at a time to ride genuine track racing bikes and battle it out over a fast, furious and high energy 500m sprint. It’s for all ages and is the closet you can get to challenging Sir Chris Hoy at the Olympic velodrome at speeds up to 50mph while securely and safely never leaving the Rollerdrome stage. Each rider’s team
is supplied with a megaphone to offer encouragement. Plus cyclists are encouraged to bring their bike for a check up as Dr Bike will be in Charter Square carrying out bike maintenance and tune ups. Then from 10.30am to 4pm on Sunday May 11, the day international cyclists cross the finish line on Angel Hill, Abbeycoft will be offering taster sessions of their Schools Out holiday camps (which take place at Bury St Edmunds and Haverhill Leisure Centres) including Dodgeball and Tri Golf. There will also be an opportunity to try out some of the activities in Abbeycroft’s new Explore Outdoor days including bread baking and camp fire cooking. In The Apex, local sports clubs and health and wellbeing organisations will be showcasing what they have to offer in Bury St Edmunds and there will be a chance for children to try the arts and craft activities that feature in the Schools Out holiday camps including jewellery and mask making and drawing.
As well as those hosted by Abbeycroft Leisure, there will also be activities on Angel Hill near the finish line on Sunday 11 May. Bury East West Safer Neighbourhood Team will be carrying out Cycle Security Marking and Cycle Suffolk with Suffolk Sport will be asking people to test their performance on their training Wattbikes. Plus British Cycling will be holding Go Ride (their development programme for young people) demonstrations including Go Ride girls team sprints. Charter Square will also be the starting line of the Women on Wheels (WOW) charity ladies cycle ride on Sunday May 11 in aid of St Nicholas Hospice Care. Participants aged eight and over can choose from a short (5 miles) or long (20 miles) route through countryside cycle paths starting at 8am and 8.30am (sign in from 7am). The rides finish at the Abbey Gardens before The Women’s Tour’s grand finish on Angel Hill. The ride will be fully marshalled and signed and is open to women and girls eight and over of all abilities. For more details visit and to register visit www.suffolksport.com/wow

ps Over Easter Bunny Ho To Visit Children d e ir a p Im g in r a He The Hearing Impaired Unit at Westgate Community Primary School, Bury St Edmunds, today received a special visit from local hearing specialists, The Hearing Care Centre and their Easter Bunny. The children all took part in a special Easter drawing competition, which saw their creations made into a colourful window display for all to see at the company’s main centre on Upper Brook Street, in Ipswich town centre. Managing Director of The Hearing Care Centre, Karen Finch, helped the bunny hand out chocolate Easter eggs to the children, who live their lives with hearing impairment. “Seeing the world through the eyes of a hearing impaired child enables you to be part of their awe and wonder as they take in all that is around them. When they only hear tales about the ‘Easter Bunny’ it is simply magical when he appears life size before their very eyes” said Catriona Rankin, Teacher of the Deaf at Westgate School. “We are all very grateful to Karen and her team for their generosity and kindness to the children.” Karen Finch said “These youngsters have a disadvantage that they will have to cope with for the rest of their lives, and a large part of the difficulty they will face is the lack of understanding among hearing people about the needs of the deaf or hard of hearing. It was fantastic to see the big smiles on their little faces”. With over 15 years experience in the Hearing Care industry, The Hearing Care Centre Ltd is a local, award winning, family run business, offering independent and private hearing care services to patients throughout East Anglia at a total of 19 local outreach centres.

Moreton Hall’s Monthly Nature Watch by Woodland Ways
Recording Moreton Hall’s Wildlife As I write this, a chiff-chaff is singing in the woods alongside Bedingfeld Way. This drab but remarkable bird has recently flown from Africa south of the Sahara to nest in Suffolk. But what is the best way to make sure that wildlife sightings like this are kept for posterity, allowing changes in species distribution and abundance to be worked out? How does one know if a species is becoming rare or common? The best way to do this is to send the record of your chiff-chaff, mammal, plant, or any other species, to Suffolk Biological Records Centre. They have over one million wildlife records, and every new record helps towards understanding our County’s wildlife.
simplerecording form to fill in. A good wildlife record has the animal or plant name, where it was, when it was there, and who found it (for verification purposes). But what if you don’t know what the plant or animal is called, and the Woodland Ways experts are never around when you want them? On www.isportnature. org you can post pictures and a description of the animal or plant. Other iSpot users will have a pretty good idea what it is, and tell you. Sometimes when a picture doesm’t show all the identifying characteristics there will be an experts debate, or you may be asked for more information. Its simple to use, free, and interesting.

FOOTBALL PROJECT CAR PARKING AND NEW SCHOOL About six weeks ago I emailed Mrs Cadman, CEO of Suffolk County Council requesting an update on the football project and new school. The reason I requested the update was because the Football Association had announced it was reducing its Grants to clubs by £1.5m. Her response was as follows. “The Football Association has confirmed that the majority of the £1.5m reduced funding is revenue funding and is separate to the £10m annual contribution made to the Foundation. As such, it should not affect capital funding for the football project.” “We are working on a master plan for the site now, which would see a new high school co-located with the football facility. We are still awaiting final determination from Cabinet in respect of Bury School Reorganisation, but if that is positive, we hope to be on site by Easter 2015 to build the first phase of the high school.” This all sounds very good news and I look forward the seeing both projects up and running, it’s been a long time coming.
SCHOOL HOLIDAYS The school holidays are not far off and they are a long time to keep kids occupied. I would like to put on a few events using the youth club. However this takes organising and most important staffing, anyone interested in getting involved please contact me and we can see what we can do. They’re your children so try and help if you can. Perhaps a sports day or family BBQ or a picnic day, with toilet facilities available, bring your own food and drink. Anyone interested let me know so that we can plan the event. I will try anything to get you out of the house lol.

In an effort to free up parking in and around Lawson Place the council have put a three hour restriction on parking in these areas. Businesses have requested this because some people were parking cars and leaving them there all day, therefore restricting the shoppers from being able to park. There is a fine for those who over park. The Pub already has a parking system in place and a clamping policy.
Flying Fortress It is with sadness that we say goodbye to Keith and Rosemary Landlords of the Flying Fortress Pub, They are retiring after running the pub since 1987 when they converted their home into a public house, I would like to wish Keith and Rosemary a very happy retirement and thank them for their service over the last 27 years. I understand the pub has been bought, but the new owners wish to remain anonymous for the time being, I look forward to meeting them when they reopen the pub.
Coffee House YOUTH NIGHT
With all the effort and advertising put into this event, in order to attempt to connect with our older teenagers, the only ones that turned up were two 13 year olds who were just passing. Thanks to the team and The Coffee House for their effort and support, we have not given up and hopefully with the lighter nights we can get something going. Should you have any ideas please pass them on to our locality officer Mrs Helen Linfield on 01284 763233.
Until next time, Frank

Christ Church Moreton Hall While Easter Day may be long over the season of Easter lasts right into June. Because it does not attract the same commercial attention as Christmas, it is easy to lose sight of the significance of Easter. It is not just that a man rises from the dead, or that he goes on to return to heaven to give us hope for eternal life. Its real meaning is that nothing, not even death, places us beyond the reach of our loving and merciful God. Even though we rejected His precious Son and killed him horribly, He still has not stopped loving us. If we are sorry for our way of life, ask for His forgiveness and put our trust in His Son Jesus, not only do we have hope for the future, but we also have His personal assurance now. That assurance comes by knowing that He is present in our lives and in our hearts. At Christ Church, Moreton Hall, we try to live in the strength of that reality. We do it by caring for each other and caring for the estate. When there is injury or slight, instead of remembering and resenting it, we learn how to forgive freely. We are also exploring the true reality of prayer, for when we pray; not only do we connect to this loving heavenly Father, we also have the capacity to understand ourselves from His perspective; which in our confusing and turbulent
32
The Moreton Hall Directory
world is an important gift indeed. Above all, we see things changed. As the Archbishop of Canterbury said when he visited the Cathedral at the end of March, ‘the more I pray the more really good coincidences happen, and the less I pray, so they don’t happen’. One of the ways we exhibit that transforming life is through the community choir which had its first concert on 22nd March which was a huge success. The second way is with our food-bank. Last time we collected enough food to keep the food bank going for two and half months, and this Easter we hope, in conjunction with the pub and other institutions, to do something similar again. It speaks to the generosity of so many to respond to those in need. Then we had in April the magnificent drama of the Passion Plays so wonderfully celebrated here in Bury St. Edmunds and across, our nation, and the rest of the world. It not just that he died and rose again for in those few days Jesus gave such important teaching to his disciples which enables them not only to survive the
traumas that lie ahead, but gives them hope for the rest of their lives with phrases such as “I go to prepare a place for you” and “anything you ask in my name will be done for you”. However, the real message of Easter is that God cares and loves you and He offers you a part in His life of wonder, miracle and assurance. This is a good time to consider where your life is going, reflect on what Easter means and take the opportunity of asking God to show Himself to you as He once showed Himself for the first time to His disciples on the days immediately after Easter. With every good wish, Yours sincerely, Revd. Canon Jonathan Ford. Minister Christ Church Moreton Hall

It’s time to sign up for Hospice
Girls Night Out
St Nicholas Hospice Care is calling for women to wear their pyjamas and sign up for its 2014 Girls Night Out moonlight walk. Participants, who wear nightwear, trainers and flashing bunny ears, will walk 11.2 or six-miles around Bury St Edmunds on the evening of 13 September. Rachael Leeves, 28, of Bury, took part for the first time last year. She said: “My dad had pancreatic cancer and the Hospice staff came out to us in his final days. The fact that the nurses came out to us was a huge help. We would have been lost without the Hospice.”
In 2013 1,020 women took part in Girls Night Out, raising more than £115,000. Jenny Baskett, Hospice Events and Challenges Fundraiser, said: “We are aiming to make this year’s walk even bigger and better, so we are appealing for women to sign up for the walk, bring their friends and family and be ready for a party. “All the funds raised by Girls Night Out will help to support patients and families in West Suffolk and Thetford.” Registration is open now, with an early sign-up offer of £10 per person valid until 31 May (£15 registration from 1 June). To sign up, go to www.stnicholashospicecare.org.uk or pick up an application form at any of the Hospice’s charity shops.

We can help by preparing a Lasting Power of Attorney (‘LPA’) on your behalf whereby you can appoint people as your Attorneys who can continue to act and look after your affairs even when you are mentally incapable of doing so. You can sign an LPA at any time so long as you are able to understand what you are doing. It is never too early to consider entering into one. For further information, please visit our offices at

WI News What a night! 71 members and no visitors! 2 presentations – Margaret gaining the Chairman’s Cup for Excellence and Elizabeth becoming Federation Chair with a “crowning “ ceremony courtesy of Debbie and Irene. Our Speaker was Carol Rainbird from the Roma Craft project. Initially started in 2005 to raise the self -esteem of the Roma women. The Roma people have their own customs and culture with girls marrying early and receiving little or no education. The Project has been teaching the women to embroider and sew and make simple but colourful items such as bags and spectacle cases. These are brought over to the UK to sell, the women being paid for their work. Their work is simple but delightful and Carol’s slideshow introducing the women to us really brought home how poor much of that country remains and the low place women hold in that society.

New Thetford Nature Trail
Thetford Garden Centre, with the help of Treelink Landcare, have been working hard over these past few months to create a wonderful nature trail at the back of the Garden Centre. Phase one involved cutting back all the trees and hedging plus the removal of any diseased or dead specimens. The tree canopy was lifted by two meters to allow light to the woodland floor and all branches that were removed were either stacked to help wildlife thrive or chipped to create a better pathway for walkers. Treelink even used their chainsaw skill and recycled the old stumps into natural benches to create peaceful seating areas beside the river. Shane Hinkley, Business Development Manager said “now that we have finished the first phase we can start organising the next phase which will see the planting of more native species and the improvement of wildlife habitats. We have received a great response from some of our key suppliers who would like to get involved and we will also be reaching out to the local community who may like to be part of this exciting project in some way. We’ve already received positive feedback from people who have enjoyed the trail and that is really encouraging for us. Our next stage will be to invite local schools to come along and help us with the planting of Daffodils, Snowdrops, Bluebells, Scotch Pines and other native Species of trees and hedging; We will also be asking them to help decide where to place bird and bat boxes along the trail.” The Nature Trail will be an ongoing project which can be enjoyed, free of charge, all year round and is hoped to be a great inspiration to children to make them more aware of the local flora and fauna.
If you would like to know more or even be involved in this project please contact Shane Hinkley on 01842 763267 or email marketing@thetfordgardencentre.co.uk

A heavy wait... by Andrew Southwood They say that ‘a watched kettle never boils’. A theory that I have put to the test and (this may surprise you), I can confirm it is in fact total rubbish. However, that said, when you are waiting for something it can seem to take a very long time. I have never been particularly patient, but the older I get the less patience I have. For example, if my Amazon delivery is due to arrive and doesn’t, I get disproportionately annoyed. Clearly, the fact that my new book/phone case/dvd player won’t be here until the next day makes no measurable difference to anything, but that’s not the point is it.
my shopping right there and storming out in a tantrum my 3 year old would be proud of.
I can only fathom that the older one gets, the more value one places on time. When you’re a kid, time grows on trees and you can waste it all day long. In adult life, those day to day inconveniences like; going to work, cleaning, telling the kids off, etc… all take up 99% of your time. The thought of losing This unjustified irritation has now crept into other areas of my any of the precious 1% that’s left is enough to turn even the life. The self service checkouts for example. You know, “are you slightest delay into a full on crises. using your own bags?” - well yes, hence why they are set out At the time of writing my wife and I are adrift in the ultimate there waiting. “Unauthorised waiting game. No set deadlines. item in bagging area” – what No customer service centre are you talking about!? By the to complain to. Just good time the traffic light of doom is flashing red above my checkout old mother nature. Yes, baby deliveries don’t abide by the and the poor assistant comes usual procurement rules. Spoilt over its all I can do to be polite by “1 hour delivery slots” and and stop myself from leaving

“track your delivery” apps, our modern lives are suddenly brought back down to earth with a bump (excuse the pun). It seems despite all the mind boggling technology at our fingertips, a baby’s delivery date is still worked out by prodding mummy’s tummy, dangling a crystal over the bump and looking at the moons phases. So, next time your cursing the online delivery that came half an hour after its allotted 7am2pm window, or your tempted to kick the heals of the dithering slow coach faffing about with their endless coupons at the checkout in front of you, stop and take a breath. Does it really matter? In the meantime, our rather important sleep depriving bundle of joy, several days late, is already controlling our lives!

EX AMS STRES
Everyone gets stressed during exams but it’s important not to let it get out of control. A little bit of stress can be a good thing as it motivates us to knuckle down and work hard. But exams can make stress levels get out of hand, which can stop us from performing our best. So it’s important to address it and get it back under control.
Stress Symptoms Look out for prolonged or extreme cases of the following if you feel the work’s piling up: • Difficulty getting to sleep or difficulty waking up in the morning • Constant tiredness • Forgetfulness • Unexplained aches and pains • Poor appetite • Loss of interest in activities • Increased anxiety and irritability • Increased heart rate • Migraines/headaches • Blurred vision • Dizziness
If you’ve noticed three or more of these symptoms and you’ve experienced them for a few weeks you may need to do something about your stress levels.
How to manage exam stress Learn to recognise when you’re stressing out. A break or a chat with someone who knows the pressure you’re under will get things into perspective. Avoid comparing your abilities with your mates. Those “Oh my God I’ve only read Macbeth 17 times” conversations are such a wind up. Everyone approaches revision in different ways, so just make sure you’ve chosen the method that works best for you. Make a realistic timetable. Stick to it. Eat right. Treat yourself like a well honed machine - eat fresh fruit and veg and have a proper breakfast. Fuel your brain as well as your body no one can think straight on coffee and chocolate. Sleep well. Wind down before bed and don’t revise
under the duvet - your bed is a sanctuary, not a desk. Get your eight hours. Exercise. Nothing destresses the mind faster than physical activity, so build it into your timetable. Being a sloth makes our mind sloppy too. Quit the bad habits. Cigarettes and alcohol never stopped anyone being stressed for very long. Panic is often triggered by hyperventilating (quick, shallow breaths). So if you feel yourself losing it during the exam, sit back for a moment and control your breathing. Deep breath in and out through the nose, counting to five each way. Steer clear of any exam ‘post-mortem’. It doesn’t matter what your mate wrote for Question 3(b), it’s too late to go back and change your answers, so it will just make you worry even more. Ultimately, don’t lose sight of the fact that there is life after exams. Things might seem intense right now, but it won’t last forever.
Good Luck to all our young readers who are sitting GCSEs or A-Levels right now! The Moreton Hall Directory

Welcome to Gardening Tips a monthly feature providing you with hints and ideas of what to do each month in your garden. Along with a list of jobs that will enable you to enjoy and maintain your garden I will also feature a plant of the month. I have been a gardener for many years and run a small business called Pauls Garden Services.

Pauls Jobs for the Month General Maintenance l Check for nesting birds before clipping hedges l Regularly hoe off weeds l Keep birdbaths topped up with water. l Recycle junk mail. If you have one of those shredding machines then shred your envelopes and paper and add to your compost heap.
Lawn Maintenance l Lawns will need cutting ideally every two weeks l Edge the lawn to create a ‘gutter’ around the lawn edge (this stops the lawn from growing into the border). l If you have a problem with moss and weeds apply a combined moss and weed killer or continue to rake.
Flower Garden l Plant out summer bedding this month , it is still possible to get frosts so depending on the weather you need to decide when you do this. l Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of daffodils and other spring-flowering bulbs l You can sow sweet williams, wall flowers, fox gloves, honesty and canterbury bells l Remove faded flowers from camellias

Lavender is an easy to grow, evergreen shrub that produces masses of beautifully scented flowers. This drought-tolerant plant thrives in a sunny border, container, herb or gravel gardens and importantly attracts plenty of bees. To prolong the life of your lavender on heavier soil, add organic matter and gravel to improve the drainage Lavenders should be pruned every year to keep them compact. I prefer to prune using secateurs to remove flower stalks after flowering. You can easily make more lavender by taking softwood cuttings from young plants in early summer. English lavender is the hardiest and will survive most winters. French lavender can struggle in bad winters and is often grown in containers so it can be moved into a sheltered spot if required.
Doing The Jobs You Don’t Have Time For?
“What is so sweet and dear As a prosperous morn in May, The confident prime of the day, And the dauntless youth of the year, When nothing that asks for bliss, Asking aright, is denied, And half of the world a bridegroom is, And half of the world a bride?” - William Watson, Ode in May, 1880
l You can now plant out your stored dahlia tubers. If you lifted them last Autumn and stored the dahlias check the condition and discard any that have gone soft. Plant them at least 4-5 (10cm) inches deep. At the same time put in some supporting canes for the taller varieties.
Pauls Garden Services One Off Jobs or Regular Maintenance on a Weekly or Monthly Basis. Hedge Trimming • Grass Cutting General Weeding and Tidying up.
l If you have space in a pot, sow a few sweet peas. An old variety with a strong scent is Painted Lady l A thick layer of coffee grounds can act as a deterrent against slugs and snails around your hostas
Prepare your Garden for Winter or Ready for Spring
l This is a good time to tidy up your cordylines. The lower leaves often look a bit brown after winter and these can be tugged away.
Phone for a quote on 01284 723625 or 07952 938010 Email: burygardener@talktalk.net
Vegetable and Fruit Garden l you can sow beetroot, runner beans, brussel sprouts, cauliflowers broccoli, fennel, kale peas, beans, swedes, radish, carrots and lettuce. So you are spoilt for choice! l Train new fruit shoots by tying loosely onto supporting frames.

With mayhem and merriment, this classic comedy by Oliver Goldsmith revels in the mistakes and misunderstandings that come together to create a heart-warming, hilarious evening. Marlow stutters and quivers around educated and well-to-do young women, so when his father sets him up with his old friend’s daughter Kate, he is totally tongue-tied! But Kate Hardcastle’s attraction to her nervous suitor leads her to embrace a new and rather different persona to win him over… Meanwhile playboy Tony Lumpkin plays a practical joke on the unsuspecting Marlow, leading to social disarray and confusion on a Shakespearean level! This is Creative Cow’s second visit to the Theatre Royal following their production of Charley’s Aunt. Book Now at www.theatreroyal.org

- 12 YEARS A SLAVE
Chiwetel Ejiofor leads a stunning cast in Steve McQueen’s blistering true story of slavery in pre-Civil War America. Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor) is a free black musician living in mid-19th century New York. Lured to Washington on the promise of some lucrative work, he’s kidnapped and dispatched in chains to Louisiana. To conceal his identity, he’s renamed Platt Hamilton by slave trader Theophilus Freeman (Paul Giamatti) and is sold to plantation owner William Ford (Benedict Cumberbatch). The relatively cultured Freeman then sells him on to sadistic racist Edwin Epps (Michael Fassbender). Brad Pitt rounds out the exceptional star cast as itinerant Canadian carpenter and abolitionist Samuel Bass, who provides Solomon with a glimmer of hope. British director Steve McQueen’s follow-up to ‘Hunger’ and ‘Shame’ is based on Northup’s own extraordinary memoir, which was originally published in 1853. Universally acclaimed by critics, ‘12 Years a Slave’ is hotly tipped for awards season glory, the results speak for themselves.
War breaks out when Zac Efron’s college fraternity moves next door to Seth Rogan’s family in this hilarious comedy. Mac (Seth Rogan) and Kelly Radnor (Rose Byrne) are a young married couple who’ve put their wild days behind them. They now have a perfect suburban home where they’re raising their beautiful newborn baby girl. But their tranquil life is shattered when a college fraternity moves in next door. At first they try to play it cool, asking fraternity president Teddy Sanders (Zac Efron) to keep the noise down a bit. But the juvenile high-jinks and continual partying just carry on. Finally, they snap and call the cops! Retaliation from the frat boys comes quick and fast. Soon everyone is locked into increasingly disgraceful tit-for-tat feuding. ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’ director Nicholas Stoller helms this jaw-droppingly debauched comedy. Watch out for Dave Franco and Christopher Mintze-Plasse as Teddy’s underlings.

The moreton hall community centre news Hello and welcome to the month of bank holidays and hopefully, some serious foreshadowing to glorious summer weather! This month at the centre we’ve got lots going on. On 10th May, Jackie from the Club committee has prepared a fiendish quiz for you all to try your hand at! It’s the usual format of our quizzes - £1 to enter with a maximum of 6 on a team; the more people enter, the more the cash prize as all proceeds taken on entry go towards the cash prizes at the end! On May 17th we have one of the biggest events of the year for darts in Suffolk – the 4th Annual Moreton Hall Bury Darts Open! There are going to be some fantastic players at the tournament, which after 4 years has grown from strength to strength thanks to the hard work of the organisers, so if you think that you’ve got a shot at the £800 first place prize (with further prizes for second place and honourable mentions!), just contact Colin Houghton for your chance to enter. Lionel Sams, last year’s winner will be participating, as well as Keith Dellar, the 1983 darts world champion! There are only a few places left, so if you want to enter but have been putting it off, please email moretonhallclub@aol.com for further details on how to enter. The very next week on 24th May, we have the dessert eating competition in aid of EACH and the MS Society. If you want to get involved, the challenge is to eat the following in just one hour – an entire black forest gateaux, chocolate brownies, lots of jelly, all smothered in cream and drizzled with your favourite bag of sweets (a big bag, not a little one of Jelly tots for all you thinking how easy it will be!). Sponsorship forms are available from Clare Harding at the Moreton Hall Club on moretonhallclub@aol.com, or from Richard Crouch. All you have to do is contact us, collect the sponsorship forms and then raise as much money as possible! As an added incentive for all our members who participate, for every £1 you get in sponsorship, the club will donate 25p, and then the association will donate another 25p! There will be a tombola on the night as well, with some entertainment planned for afterwards, so even if you’re not up for participating in the challenge, please come down and support those brave enough to because it’s going to be a brilliant night! For those lovely bank holidays coming up in May we will be opening the clubroom at 12pm on each of those days, for those of you wanting to celebrate an
extra day off work with drink or two in the (hopefully) sunshine. We will also serve food from 12-4pm on those bank holidays, and we are very pleased to say that through hard work we have been awarded 5 stars for our kitchen on a recent environmental health inspection! Well done to our chef and his team – it’s been a year now since we’ve started catering at the centre and the club, and we’ve produced a wide range of menus to suit every occasion, all of which feature homemade, quality food at great prices. Visit our website, www.moretonhallcommunitycentre.co.uk to find out more about what we can offer you. In June we are of course showing the world cup matches on the big screen! We will also install extra TV’s around the clubroom for all the England matches for a truly surrounding experience! There will be drinks offers aplenty, and entertainment abound – to tie it all in together, on Saturday 7th June we will be hosting a samba party to get it all kicked off! Free entry of course, and everyone welcome! Every other Tuesday night we still have bingo in the clubroom, starting from 8pm, hosted by the charismatic duo Marc and Neil, so if you fancy the chance to win a bit of extra spending money come on down and join in! The next one is on 13th May, then the 27th May. On 26th May, Bank Holiday Monday, we are also hosting a cricket tournament! There will be separate tournaments for kids and adults, no charge to enter, just an opportunity to have a bit of friendly competition at the community centre. It will start from 12pm, look for further details in our members emails. There’s lots going on at the club and centre in the coming months, keep tuned to our website and members emails for further information! We of course are running our 2-4-1 on bar meals every Friday 12-2pm, and during school holidays we have a kids eat free promotion (under 12’s, when accompanied by a paying adult)! Add this to a growing list of varied events to keep all ages and interests entertained, and we think that we’ve got a little bit for everyone. See you all soon!
