Hello

and welcome to this months Halloween special. With ideas for cooking some treats for the kiddies, or budget costume ideas for mum. Got a Halloween party planned? if not, don’t worry, the Moreton Hall Community Centre are hosting their annual Halloween party on Saturday 26th October, and everyone’s invited! So get into the spirit of things and get the whole family dressed up for an evening of fun for everyone. There’s prizes for the best dressed! Our top picks on the opposite page are also themed around this spooky month! And they won’t break the bank either. If Halloween isn’t your bag, then we have the usual features that will keep you entertained whilst you’re trying to ignore the knocks at the door from pesky trick or treaters. And trick or treaters… Remember, it’s good ‘Halloween etiquette’ to only knock on the doors that are showing an interest, ie. have a pumpkin outside or similar, it can be quite scary for someone on their own when it’s dark, so please be kind.

SPOOKY DOODLES: HALLOWEEN DESIGNS TO COMPLETE AND CREATE BY EMMA PARRISH £6.99 RRP FROM WHSMITH

So whether you are going out into the cold with the kids or staying in the warm watching telly, have a nice October and we will see you in November!

Hey Ladies! Going to a Halloween Fancy Dre

No need to spend a fortune on costumes, here are a few ideas for you to lo

Sexy Black Cat

Sexy Witch

A.K.A. the unofficial backup costume for every woman.

Here’s another classic Halloween costume that relies on your already owning little more than a black dress. If you want a prettier take, leave the novelty nose out of it and go glam goth.

It’s foolproof. You can’t mess up a cat. But what you can do is add a little more flavour with expertly applied cat-eyes.

1: Even out your skin tone, taking your foundation a couple of shades lighter for a ghoulish effect.

1: Use a black waterproof eyeliner pencil to draw a dot on the tip of your nose and whiskers on your cheeks. (Three or four evenly spaced lines angling out from the bulb of your nose should do.) 2: Use a liquid eyeliner to trace a thin strip along your upper lash line, extending the colour out slightly at the corners for a cat-eye effect.

2: A smoky eye is powerful and sexy. Rim the top and bottom lash lines with black liner, and then exaggerate the stroke at the outer corners. Use a brush to smudge the liner and smoke it out. 3: Use a dark brown eye shadow over the lid and put a little underneath the eyes on the bottom lash line. 4: A nude lip with a smoky eye is standard fare and will look great. But if you want to make more of a statement, go red. (It is a costume after all.)

3: Apply a baby pink lip colour. EXTRAS: You’ll need ears and a tail for this otherwise spartan costume. If the costume shop looks overrun, try the supermarket; they’ll usually have them.

10

The Moreton Hall Directory

5: All witches have moles— it’s practically a rule. Opt for a cute Cindy Crawford beauty mark. EXTRAS: A witch hat. Your household broom.

Cat Optional!

Cleopatra Elizabeth Taylor’s blue-eye-shadow version is not the only Cleopatra out there. Do a modern take on her. 1: Mix a few drops of liquid illuminator with your foundation and apply that all over your face. 2: Use a very dark pencil to give yourself brows that are arched at the center. Then add a little gold cream eye shadow on your brow bones. 3: Use a black eye pencil to trace a thick strip along the lash line, creating an exaggerated eye shape that extends beyond the eye but goes straight across rather than upward, says Murphy. Top off the lashes with black mascara.

“Bend & Blen d”

A combination of dietary tips, mind/body exer and latest rese cises arch blended to gether to prom ote health &

By Carole Baker

vitality.

Director, The Self Centre

This month we look at Home remedies, complementary therapies and mind/body exercise for eliminating high blood pressure Reduce Salt: Follow a strict salt-aware diet. This is essential for lowering blood pressure. Read labels carefully and avoid those food products that have “salt,” “soda,” “sodium,” or the symbol “Na” on the label. These contain commercial table salt the worst kind! Some foods and food additives that should be avoided also, include monosodium glutamate (Accent, MSG); baking soda; canned vegetables (unless marked sodium- or salt-free); commercially prepared foods; over-the-counter medications that contain ibuprofen; diet soft drinks; foods with mould inhibitors, preservatives, and/or sugar substitutes; meat tenderizers; softened water; and soy sauce. You are allowed to have a little sea salt or ideally Himalayan rock salt.

Fibre: Eat a high-fibre diet Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, such as apples, asparagus, bananas, broccoli, cabbage, cantaloupe melon, aubergine, garlic, grapefruit, green leafy vegetables, peas, prunes, raisins, squash, and sweet potatoes.

Juice: Include fresh “live” juices in the diet. The following juices are helpful: beetroot, carrot, celery, cranberry, citrus fruits, parsley, spinach, and watermelon. Wholegrains: Eat grains like brown rice, buckwheat, millet, and oats. Water: Drink filtered water only Flaxseed: Take 2 tablespoons of flaxseed oil daily Magnesium: 300-500 mg daily (may need to divide doses to avoid diarrhea) Magnesium is a muscle relaxant and the arteries are all surrounded with smooth muscle. When the smooth muscle surrounding

your arteries relaxes, it causes your arteries to dilate which results in a drop of blood pressure. Most people are deficient in magnesium anyway, as the richest sources are found in green veggies.

CoQ10: 100 mg daily (You should be on this anyway if you have high cholesterol as statins deplete this nutrient, and the common sign is muscle weakness or pain) Garlic: Liberally in the diet (cooking does reduce the allicin content, so raw is best but I understand if you still need to keep a few friends around…it just means you have to eat more cooked or roasted garlic to attain the same therapeutic effect.) Various studies

have shown garlic to be as effective as an antihypertensive drug; I would start slow and monitor blood pressure. Garlic also lowers blood sugar, so if you are diabetic you should check your sugars more often while implementing this natural therapeutic for hypertension.

Potassium: (ask your nutritionist, but chances are you

are already on this as most anti-hypertensives are potassium depleting) If you want to get this from dietary sources, then just eat green leaves and fruits like bananas. Check with your doctor before using this as a therapeutic agent if you have kidney disease or if you are already on a potassium sparing diuretic medication (used for high BP.)

Vitamin C: 1000 mg twice daily. Hypertension is

often caused either by problems in the kidneys, or “atherosclerosis” or hardening of the arteries. Vitamin C is a very cheap antioxidant that helps prevent the LDL from “oxidizing” and forming the hardened plaques in our arteries that cause them to lose their elasticity. Think of vitamin C as the nutrient that keeps your pipes from rusting. Just about everyone should be on vitamin C anyway!

Decrease/Eliminate Caffeine: Caffeine is just like throwing petrol on the hypertensive fire. Reduce sugar: Sugar is the culprit for many diseases, and although not typically associated with hypertension may actually be the root cause. Try eliminating sugar or cutting back for a few weeks and track your daily numbers. Do NOT drink diet substitutes with artificial sweeteners and chemicals – just cut down your sugar! Not enough good oil, too much bad oil: We want to increase our good fats such as olive, fish, and flax, and decrease fried and fatty foods. Think

of saturated fat as little cement bricks building up in your arteries and making them hard and narrow. The good fats as recommended in “The Mediterranean Diet” are what will keep your cardiovascular system running like a race car. Most men worry about changing the oil in their cars more than they do than changing the oils in their body. Eat Avocados they are the best super food ever!!!

Manage Stress: Blah blah blah stress. I can see you all rolling your eyes as you read this, but really stress is often the root cause of hypertension.

continued....

The remedies and advice suggested in this article are the personal opinion of the author. Please also inform your GP if you are planning to take any natural remedies and you are already on long term prescribed drugs.

health & beauty Have you heard of cases of “White Coat Hypertension” when you go to have your blood pressure checked at the surgery and you feel the added stress and it turns out to be a really high reading! Eat celery and parsley: Who knew that garnish on your plate is an actual diuretic? Celery has been used anecdotally with many patients… celery should be a daily snack anyway. Vitamin E is the vitamin that we would say is one of the most important for the heart, as an antioxidant and to prevent blood inappropriately clotting. Its properties for healing tissue, which would include blood vessels is well documented. We suggest that a dose of 400 - 800 IU’s per day is a therapeutic dose for hypertension. Lead toxicity is often linked to hypertension and increased cardiovascular disease. Vitamin C is really important to promote excretion of lead from the body. Herbs: • Hops and valerian root are good for calming the nerves and preventing stress overload • Avoid liquorice, as it can elevate blood pressure. Meditation There is clear scientific evidence to show that mindfulness / meditation can lower blood pressure for more details visit www. yogaforthemind.info and be amazed at the research that is currently being carried out! Yoga Yoga has a profound effect on mind, body, and breathing. The biochemical changes associated with yoga according to studies conducted in Sweden and India can lower blood pressure naturally by reducing stress and other risks factors for high blood pressure such as: obesity, high blood sugar, triglycerides, low HDL, and waist circumference. From this research, yoga shows great promise as a remedy for reducing high blood pressure naturally. Tai Chi Researchers found that older people who regularly performed Tai Chi were less likely to suffer high blood pressure and were physically stronger. They concluded that the improvement of heart function combined with increased muscular power meant that the martial art should be considered the preferred technique for elderly people to maintain good health. other recommendations: • Massage – Ayurvedic or Aromatherapy • Shiatsu • Reflexology • Nutritional supplements For current timetable of yoga, hot yoga, pilates, tai chi, meditation classes and workshops or to find out more scientific research on complementary therapies and mind/body exercise please visit www.the-self-centre.co.uk or download our mobile app from the app store and book on your phone!!

home & lifestyle

This month I would like to offer the readers of the Moreton hall directory the opportunity to a FREE online consultation. Working in a gym environment for 9 years I cannot still believe the mistakes members are making on a regular basis. I am going to highlight the most regular and easiest to solve mistakes for you today: Mistake 1: Putting weight ahead of form and correct lifting I must say this is more often males who carry out this mistake, but still men especially young adults are still trying to lift as heavy as they can without focusing on their body position. Exercises include: Bent-over rows - Where they bend from the back and not the hips. Squats - Again bending in the back, knees buckling in and heels raising off the floor. Bicep curls - Swinging hips and elbows coming away from the body. Pull-ups - Not elevating the chest. In all these exercises momentum is often used as well, to isolate and work the muscle correctly you should eliminate momentum. Cheating for a final few reps when pushing the body is allowed with having the correct form in previous sets and if you understand what you are doing.

Mistake 2: Having no programme/plan when coming into the gym. Often I see members walk into a gym, have a pause and then think okay I’ll start on that. Then once that exercise is completed look around the gym again and then pick the next exercise. You wouldn’t start a car journey without a plan of how to get to your destination, so why when trying to achieve a goal would you not have a plan on how to achieve this goal. Having a programme saves any time wasting in the workout and gives you a direct route to achieving your goals.

Mistake 3: Rest time in-between sets/exercises. When planning your workout most people stick to a certain number of sets+reps, however, ask this member what rest time they are allowing themselves between sets+exercises and in most occasions you will not get a definite answer. Rest time is just as important as sets, reps, exercise, tempo. Make sure you have a strict rest time in your programme and stick to it. There are many more mistakes members and yourselves maybe making every time you train. Do you feel like your getting maximum results from your workouts? You’ve done the hard part actually getting yourselves into the gym. If you would like me to give any advice on your current gym routine please feel free to get in touch. @ptjoesadler

Silent but Deadly It is wonderful to see adults and our young children using their cycles. Good healthy exercise and eco friendly, however there is a downside to this also. They are silent, fast and deadly. Most good cycle shops will advise you when purchasing your bike that you ought to have a bell, lights and a helmet. I have been approached by many elderly people walking into town, who have complained about almost being mowed down by a speeding cyclist. Can I please make a plea on their behalf, ring your bell before you reach anyone walking and make sure you are on the cyclist side of the duel walk/cycle pathways. On many of these paths the white markings have faded or are just not there, I will write to the highways department and try and get these markings redone. So enjoy your safe cycling and look out for other users.

Football Facilities It was sad to hear that the scheme has been put on hold again while talks are on-going with Suffolk County Council to try and dovetail the infrastructure with that of the new school, therefore making it affordable. I believe that costs had risen and there were not enough funds to meet the needs. Let us hope compromise can be reached as it would be a shame to loose such a much needed facility for the estate.

Metropolitan Housing

I understand that Metropolitan housing have taken over Granta Housing, this effects quite a few residents on our estate, I have made contact with Metropolitan so that if needed I can contact them should any Tenants have problems. It is sometimes difficult when dealing with arm’s length companies.

Council Surgery

Starting in October I shall be holding surgeries in the Youth Club between 12.30 and 13.30 on Saturdays, so if you have any issues regarding the council or problems in your area, or indeed any general issues please contact me with your problem and I will try and see if I can get answers for you.

Pelican Crossing The crossing across Bedingfeld Road at Sainsburys should have been completed by now, however, due to some unforeseen circumstances it has been delayed. However, I have been reliably informed that the work is to start on the first week of October. This will make a great difference to the users as we know that trying to cross as things are, is taking your life in your hands, especially people using disabled buggies, hopefully things will get better. I have also requested that they cut back the bush on each side.

Update on 13 plus

Things are well on the way to getting the Thursday night over thirteen’s club going, thanks to County councillors Sarah Stamp and Trevor Beckwith, between them donated £700 from their Locality Budget. This money will help pay for the required youth workers. Good luck to the club. While talking about clubs, the eight to thirteen’s is going strong, each week we get some newcomers, but still need more helpers please.

Until next time take care. Frank

This months recipe page.. Halloween ghost cupcakes

Ingredients

We have had a great start to the new school year at Abbots Green! The children have been keen to sign up to the after school clubs for the term. We offer a wide range of clubs run by school staff and outside providers including gardening; dance; choir; craft and science. This term our ‘Busy Fingers Club’ will be teaching crafts to the children in Key Stage 2. The group will be making items ready to sell at our school Farmers’ Market. This week “We made ‘Hamma Bead’ pictures” said Owen. We will also sell produce grown by our Gardening Club. Ruby S. enjoyed “picking some carrots and some green beans” this week “We got to take some home” said Rebecca and Teresa added “It’s interesting to see how things grow.” Katie said “my favourite part was seeing the beetroot!” Milly loves “spending time with her friends at Dance Club and learning different moves” and Mollie said she enjoyed “following the lady’s dance moves on the screen.” We welcome to Abbots Green ‘Musical Medley & Performing Arts Club’ who are running a club for our Key Stage 1 and 2 children. The children will be learning a medley of songs and routines from various musicals including ‘The Sound of Music’ and ‘Grease.’ They will then perform at The Apex next Summer.... “on a stage” added Ruby R. We also welcome back Zebra Science and the Bury St Edmunds Rugby Club. Tag Rugby has proved a huge hit with Thomas “It’s great fun learning to play rugby.” Victoria enjoyed Science Club this week and said “We tested magnets to find the strongest ones.” Clubs.... a great opportunity to learn new skills and spend more time with friends! We are looking for a midday supervisor - see page 56 for more details

FOR THE MARSHMALLOW FOR THE CUPCAKES ICING 140g/5oz butter, softened 250g/9oz sugar 250g/9oz caster sugar 120g/4½oz golden syrup 2 free-range eggs, lightly beaten 4 free-range eggs, whites only 1 tsp vanilla extract 2 tbsp chocolate sugar strands 150g/5½oz plain flour 75g/2½oz self-raising flour 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda 50g/2oz cocoa powder 200ml/7fl oz buttermilk or plain yoghurt

Method

Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. Line twelve muffin tins with muffin cases. For the cakes, beat together the butter and sugar with a hand-held mixer until very light and fluffy. Add the eggs a little at a time beating well after each addition. Add the vanilla extract with the last of the egg. Sift together the flours, bicarbonate of soda and cocoa into a large mixing bowl. Gently fold the flour mix into the butter mixture along with the buttermilk until completely combined and smooth. Place a dessertspoonful of the batter into each muffin case then bake in the oven for 20 minutes until firm to the touch. Place on a wire rack to cool. For the icing, place the sugar, golden syrup and four tablespoons of water into a large saucepan. Heat gently, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Bring the sugar syrup to the boil and cook for about 5-6 minutes until the syrup reaches 115C/239F when measured with a sugar thermometer. Remove the pan from the heat. While the syrup is boiling, in a large bowl whisk the egg whites with a hand-held mixer until soft peaks form when the whisk is removed. Then, with the mixer on a low speed, pour in the sugar syrup in a thin steady stream - be careful not to pour the syrup onto the beaters as it may splash onto your hands. Once all the syrup has been added increase the speed of the mixer and mix for about 10 minutes until the icing is completely cool, thick and glossy. Do not skimp on the whipping or your icing will be too soft and your ghosts will sag. Place the icing into a piping bag fitted with a large plain nozzle. Pipe a circle of icing onto each cupcake. Then, holding the bag upright over the centre of the cake, pipe a tall mound of icing, then quickly pull the tip away to form a small peak on the top. Add chocolate sugar strands for eyes or any decoration you fancy. The meringue icing will keep out of the fridge (the sugar syrup will have pasteurised the egg white), but make sure they don’t get too hot or the meringue will melt.

NEWS FROM MORETON HALL RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION Annual General Meeting 28 Oct 2013 At the previous two AGM’s we have organised speakers to inform residents on matters of importance. This year we have decided to dedicate the meeting to listening to points of view from residents. We do have to deal with constitutional matters but as in previous years we will deal with these in the shortest possible time. In this respect however we are, as ever, looking for people to join us on the committee or assist in other ways and would welcome volunteers either at the meeting or beforehand. In advance of the meeting we will prepare a written update on all current issues including but not limited to: n Travellers. n Bury Community Football Facility. n Vision 2031. n Waste Transfer Plant. n Eastern Relief Road.

22

We will be pleased to hear residents views on these and any other relevant issues. Please take the time to attend this important meeting so that we can ensure that residents views are represented in the important discussions that will take place during the Autumn and which will affect all our lives over the next 16 years. The Bury Rugby Club

Go Pink for a 2014 calendar…Twice! Laura Hudson, a volunteer for the Suffolk group of Breakthrough Breast Cancer has joined forces with the whole of The Bury Rugby Club to create not just one but two calendars all in the name of Breast Cancer awareness. The harsh reality is Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the UK, effecting 130 people each day. So 4,000 mums, daughters, sisters and husbands, sons, brothers and friends will hear the dreadful news this month alone. Breakthrough Breast Cancer works hard to improve and save lives, through brilliant research.

The two calendars take on very different styles; The Bury Rugby Club are a community club, and the first calendar aims to showcase that featuring every age group from minis to seniors, the ladies team and the West Suffolk college academy all “pinked up” and posed for the cause. The second calendar has a more adult theme with the 1st XV Team stripping off to very little other than tutus. Local businesses have got fully behind the project, Allison Johnson Pictures, Kris Fresh Design and Kingfisher Press have all donated their time and expenses in creating the 900 calendars. It didn’t stop there, support went further from donations of props such as pink burger buns especially made by Gastronome, pink chocolates from Thorntons and pink Halloween fancy dress from Dance & Party Crazy. Laura Hudson says “I have been absolutely blown away by the support of all the people involved from the time and effort put in by all the companies who were crucial to the making of the calendars to the willing models who all pinked up without question. I am so excited to launch the finished product and the awareness for Breakthrough Breast Cancer that this will bring.” A teaser facebook page was created in July with an aim to build excitement, and a staggering 300 people were following within the first 24 hours, and the page now has over 600 followers. The joint collaboration between Laura and the club is set to raise nearly £7000 of vital funds in the fight against Breast Cancer if all 900 calendars are sold.

24

The calendars are now available to buy direct from the Rugby Club, Suffolk Breakthrough Breast Cancer and many local outlets including The Coffee House, Bliss Hair Studios, Palmers and E3 Electronic Entertainment Exchange.

Moreton Hall’s Monthly Nature Watch by Woodland Ways

Our woodland products Our community woodlands managed by Woodland Ways volunteers are truly multi-functional. They are a place to walk, play, enjoy the abundant nature, or relax peacefully. They absorb rainwater and reduce the risk of flooding. Work parties are recreational and social events as well as making the woods a better place. On average, a broadleaved wood grows around 3 – 4 tonnes of wood each year. Over the centuries, woods have been used to source timber for building houses and ships, wood for making furniture and doors, firewood, and many other woodland products. Until now, however, Moreton Hall’s community woodlands have not yet yielded any wood!

Woodland Ways is pleased to announce that our community woods are now producing useable wood for the first time in Woodland Ways’ existence. We have cut, seasoned and chopped some beautifully

coloured cherry firewood from the woodland known as Woodland Ways Pond, just under the underpass from Tesco Express, to make high class firewood. We have also made firewood from Norway Spruce, sourced from Cherry Trees Wood. All wood production has helped progress the improvement of the woodlands. A few houses in Moreton Hall have log fires in their sitting rooms, to provide warmth and a focal point in those winter evenings. Many more of us enjoy an occasional fire in our garden. If you buy your firewood from Woodland Ways, the wood is sustainably sourced and is better value than that in petrol stations or the big DIY stores. Its only £5 for a large sack of cherry firewood, or less for Norway Spruce, and the money will be used by Woodland Ways for more woodland management. To buy some, use the contact details below or talk to us at work parties.

Join us at Woodland Ways...

Woodland Ways is now on Twitter @NatterersWood

Why not join in with a Woodland Ways work party to help improve the Moreton Hall woods? No experience is needed and all are welcome; we’ll show you what to do. For more information please see www.woodlandways.org.uk, see the Woodland Ways noticeboard in the Community Centre, contact Nick Sibbett on 01284 723847 or email information@woodlandways.org.uk.

In the autumn, we are starting a local choir, meeting at Christ Church Moreton Hall on Monday evenings and you are warmly invited to join us.

Dayspring Community Choir Choirs, choirs and more choirs - on television and round and about, choral singing is cool! Statistics suggest that there are around 25,000 choirs in the UK, that’s half a million folk experiencing the joy of singing with other people! Many of these choirs would call themselves community choirs and, as the phenomenon, doesn’t appear to have reached Moreton Hall yet, that is exactly what we are starting in our area: a choir to bring folk together, make music and sing for other people. Why a ‘community’ choir? Well, it’s open to all with no auditions, no prior musical knowledge required, just a heart to meet other people from the neighbourhood (and maybe a little further afield) and perform a varied repertoire, much of it drawn from other cultures, other musical communities. United by the love of making music together, hopefully we can actually build community, not only within the choir but also in this locality. We would be so pleased to see you at our Taster Evening in October.

Christ Church Moreton Hall Since my letter to the Bury Free Press which was reproduced in the Moreton Hall Directory, there has been considerable activity over the issue of the travellers. It has led to a number of meetings with political leaders and conferences with the police. There will be a Meeting with Moreton Hall community leader, David Ruffley MP and Mr Passmore the Police commissioner on Monday the 14th October. There does seem to be a willingness to address this issue and for significant action to be taken to address the problem. Despite all that has happened, Moreton Hall is not anti traveller. We do understand that provision must be made for their particular needs. This will have to be taken out of the public purse at a time when we are concerned about costs and expenditure. This is only fair and just. Many people are already booked into the Alpha Course at the Flying Fortress public house this year. It begins with a taster session on 7:30 pm 3rd October. If you would like to be included please contact me on 01284 725391 or email me at the address below. The first evening is free and includes a carvery supper. For the subsequent seven sessions there will be a charge of £5.00 for the carvery meal, the course itself being free. Even if you cannot make the initial meeting on 3rd October, you would be very welcome to join us from 10th October onwards. If you miss out on this course, we hope to run another one after Christmas next year. We do hope to see you at our Harvest Service on Sunday 6th October at 10:30am. This year all the produce is going to the Food bank in Bury St Edmunds. I am so grateful that Sebert Wood School is supporting this with their offering at their harvest services in church earlier that week. Please

help us to support such an essential ministry in our town. We will also be coming together with Abbots Green and the Brownies to support the annual Shoe Box Appeal “Operation Christmas Child,” on Sunday 17th November. So please look out for more details on the website and at the schools. On a personal note, it has been very encouraging to me to receive so many letters, phone calls about the public ministry of the church regarding the travellers in recent weeks. It is good to know that when the community is facing difficulties it turns to its church. We don’t know yet what the outcome will be but it is good we are coming together and working to a common goal. We just want to keep our estate as a safe and peaceful home for us all. I am sure all our prayers will be answered. Yours sincerely, Revd. Canon Jonathan Ford. Minister Christ Church Moreton Hall

Growing Pains

by Andrew Southwood

I

T’S been a bit of a strange year in the garden. The spring was later than a bus, as the winter out stayed its welcome almost as much as this summers transient visitors to Moreton Hall. Followed by a heat wave and drought, it’s been a tough growing season for the vegetables of Suffolk. The damp cold Easter meant the veg patch was left bare and lifeless for what seemed like months. However, once the weather finally turned we wasted no time in getting our hands dirty. Well, that and legs, tummies, and even faces dirty, in the case of our kids. They love gardening. I remember a few years ago being able to plant straight lines of evenly distributed seeds. Now, I’d be lucky if each ‘row’ contained seeds from the same packet, such is the level of hands on help forced upon me. I have to laugh, the packets say things like ‘plant thinly 5mm deep in rows 250mm apart...’, and yet we still get a decent germination rate. To be honest, it’s a testament to the resilience of nature that anything grows in our garden. A few weeks later, and the seedlings had survived drought (we never marked where we planted them so didn’t water at all) and complete drowning (kids tipping watering can upside down over them for super fast watering). However, if they thought the worst was over, those poor plants were sadly mistaken. For now the children, armed with a variety of tools (some more appropriate

than others) were adamant they wanted to do some weeding! As most of you will know, weeding a veg patch requires a reasonable amount of finer motor control, patients, and a concentration span greater than 5 seconds. These are all attributes that my young children, like most others, do not have in abundance. All of this and still they survived, and it is now, as summer slips away, and the dark evenings close in on us far too quickly, we have the rewards. As ever, it’s never quite what you expect. Overrun with courgettes/ marrows, disappointing bulb like onions, and still most of the potatoes a buried carbohydrate treasure awaiting discovery. All in all it’s been a surprisingly successful harvest though. The kids have learned that picking runner beans is more fun than eating them. I have learned that a wasp sting is more painful than child birth (I would imagine). Sadly, I am now almost looking forward to tucking up the garden for the winter, as the perpetual changing of seasons moves on and I can look forward to teaching the kids about it all again next time.

Two maths tricks to help you amaze your friends Using just an ordinary deck of cards with 10s and picture cards taken out Have a friend choose a card without showing you Tell your friend to

l Multiply the number on the card by 2

l Add 3 to the result

l Multiply this latest result by 5

If the card is a club add 1

It the card is a diamond add 2

If the card is a heart add 3

If the card is a spade add 4

l Tell you the final answer

You then subtract 15 from the answer and work out what the card is by :

Frightened of Maths?

The number of tens give you the value The units give the suit as in the instructions Eg 63 would be the 6 of clubs 24 would be the 2 of spades Mind Reader

Girls Night Out walk raises more than £100,000

As dusk fell in Bury St Edmunds on Saturday 14 September, Angel Hill was lit up by more than 1,000 pairs of flashing bunny ears for St Nicholas Hospice Care’s Girls Night Out walk. The women-only moonlight walk saw 1,020 women pull on their pyjamas – and thermals as the temperature dropped to 8c – to walk 11.2 or six miles around the town to raise an estimated £105,000 for the Hospice. This year’s walk, the fifth annual Girls Night Out, was a record-breaker for the Hospice, with more women than ever before taking part. Jenny Baskett, Hospice Events and Challenges Fundraiser, said: “Thank you to everyone who walked in Girls Night Out – it was joyful and emotional seeing them set off from Angel Hill. Every step taken by participants and every penny raised makes a difference. Their efforts allow people in West Suffolk and Thetford to have quality end of life care.” Jo Lebbon, Tracy [corr] Brown and Alison Price, of Bury St Edmunds, decided to walk together in memory of Tony Brown, who died in 2007. Tracy said: “This is my third time doing Girls Night Out, and I am doing it in memory of my dad because he was in the Hospice. I also volunteer in the Hospice shop, in St John’s Street, because I know exactly what good work the Hospice does.” The Moreton Hall Directory

Gardening Tips by Paul Clarke 50

The Moreton Hall Directory

Welcome to Gardening Tips a monthly feature providing you with hints and ideas of what to do each month in your garden. Along with a list of jobs that will enable you to enjoy and maintain your garden I will also feature a plant of the month. I have been a gardener for many years and run a small business called Pauls Garden Services.

Pauls Jobs for the Month Flower Garden

l Plant spring bulbs. The earlier you plant bulbs the better, for the soil is still warm and getting the roots established before the weather closes in will help them fight wet and rot . Think of buying just a few varieties in large numbers. Some of the Spring bulbs to consider are daffodils, hyacinths, crocuses, snowdrops, fritillaries and lilies. l Cut back all of the tall shrubs such as lavatera and buddleia. l Now is the time to take hardwood cuttings from buddleia, flowering currants and forsythia

Vegetable Garden l Create new strawberry beds and plant young strawberry plants raised from runners. l In the vegetable plot you can now plant spring cabbage and overwintering onion sets. l Harvest your final crop of beetroot and store in a cool dark location.

General Maintenance l Forget the gym and get yourself a good workout by raking and sweeping fallen leaves. Even on the coolest of days this will work up a sweat . Leafs are great for composting and if you don’t have a compost bin put them in a bin bag with a few holes in it and next year you will have some valuable leaf mould to feed your plants. l A nice mucky job to do if you have a pond is to remove all of the black sludge that forms at the bottom. It is worth doing to improve the oxygen in the water. Pile the rubbish on the side of the pond to allow any wildlife the chance to return to the water before adding it to the compost. l Continue to tidy your garden borders by removing dead flower stems and weeds .

Lawn Maintenance l By the end of the month you will probably have given your lawn its final cut of the year. After this it is a good time to give the grass a good scarifying with a lawn rake to pull out dead grass and moss.

“Clouds gather, treetops toss and sway; But pour us wine, an old one! That we may turn this dreary day To golden, yes, to golden!

Heucheras are commonly known as Alum Root or Coral Bells . They are excellent for formal bedding schemes and come in a vast palette of colours. They bloom from late spring through early summer but, with their colourful foliage, they brighten the flower garden with colour well into autumn. They grow well with some shade, the darker leaved varieties will tolerate full sun. Heucheras are in the main resistant to pests and diseases and unlike hostas are pretty resistant to slugs and snails . Heuchera plants need to be divided every two to four years when the stems begin to look woody. Divide in the spring to give the plants time to re-establish before winter. Dig up the plants and gently pull them apart if possible or cut through the roots with a sharp knife or shovel.

Doing The Jobs You Don’t Have Time For?

Autumn has come, but never fear, Wait but a little while yet, Spring will be here, the skies will clear, And fields stand deep in violets. The heavenly blue of fresh new days Oh, friend, you must employ them Before they pass away. Be brave! Enjoy them; oh, enjoy them!”

CHARITY CHALLENGE

Kilverstone, Thetford, IP24 2RL

(Next door to Tesco) Shane Hinkley, Thetford Garden Centre’s Development Tel. 01842 763267 Manager, now has his feet firmly back on the floorthetfordgardence after ntre.co.uk accomplishing a skydive and then the three peaks challenge this month.

Po

At the beginning of 2013 Shane decided to set himself a challenge to raise funds for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices. The skydive was held at Beccles airfield and was something Shane thoroughly enjoyed – much to his surprise; but the hardest challenge was to follow - the National Three Peaks Challenge. This involves climbing Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon (the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales respectively) all in 24 hours. He successfully completed his challenge on Sunday 25th August in an impressive 23 hours and 29 minutes. “I really enjoyed the three peaks, I knew it would be hard but I had prepared myself for it with lots of training since the start of the year. I have a great feeling of achievement, completing something I always wanted to do. The weather was fantastic and the views were amazing, I also got some great photos I took on the way. What’s even better are the really generous donations I’ve received – I’ve had a collection box at the Garden Centre and the total so far is £1650, and every penny of this will go to EACH.”

Hello all and welcome to the October edition of the Moreton Hall editorial – is it that time already? Dare I mention how many sleeps until Christmas (time of writing: 91)?! In October and in the lead up to the festive season we have a lot lined up for you all at the club – before thrilling you all too much, however, we’d like to mention the Summer Sixes Charity Darts League who have to this date, since reforming in 2001, raised £50,250 for Clic Sargent, a charity dedicated to helping children and their families with cancer. This year they raised over £6,000, a brilliant achievement that reflects the generosity of an amateur sports league doing their bit for their community. Well done to all (and thank you for the bar sales on your Finals night!), and thank you to Colin Greene & Associates for sponsoring and driving the league forward. In upcoming events we have our member’s loyalty night on Saturday October 12th, starting at 6pm with a free buffet for our members, continuing with 2 free drinks for everyone to enjoy, and complimented by free pool table and jukebox for everyone! This is our way of saying thanks for the support over the year, really highlighted by the sales of the club that have improved dramatically in even these hard times , and our way of giving those improved sales back to our members, who this club is for. So thank you! On Saturdy 26th October, we’re celebrating Halloween early! We’ll have competitions for the best dressed adult/child with prizes, scary activities for the kids to do, and then we’ll be having a spooky Halloween karaoke/disco starting at 8pm – come along to get your spines tingled (and that’s just the singing) and throw some gruesome shapes on the dance floor! In November we’re holding our Sports Quiz on Saturday 16th. Anyone who thinks they have the knowledge and skills to defeat our quiz master, then please get together a team for the opportunity to win cash prizes on the night! Maximum of 6 in a team, £1 each to enter. On the 9th November we are hosting the beefy burger challenge, whereby lucky participants have the chance to raise money in the most glutinous way possible – 9 burger patties (1kg), 6 strips of bacon, cheese, sauce, onion rings, chips and coleslaw as sides, and a whole mess of other things perhaps classed as vegetables or salad, but in context of the sheer amount of burger, the health value is most likely negated! All proceeds go to St Nicholas Hospice; if you’re interested, phone Rick on 07795 593550 all you have to do is raise a minimum £50 of sponsorship, and then try to take on the burger! Of course we continue to hold Bingo every other Tuesday night, and our carboot sale has been reincarnated as the more winter friendly table top

whatsonlistings

sale, taking place every third Sunday of the month. The next bingo is 1st October, and with a club donation of £20 towards the lucky number game taking place at the end of the session, you can win up to £50 (or more, depending on how many come down!). Our winter sports leagues are in full force now, with Crib on Monday nights, Pool and Mens Super League darts on Tuesdays, Ladies Super League and Pool on Wednesdays, Ladies Darts on Thursdays, and Mens darts on Friday nights. On top of that, we of course are showing all the big matches on Sky Sports and BT Sports, and with our loyalty card that means you get the chance to earn a free drink, simply by coming down to enjoy the football! If you want to find out how these teams and leagues work, or want to enjoy the atmosphere of a bustling club, then come on down and have a chat with us. The Christmas Season (I’m sorry, I mentioned it again) is coming up fast, and we at the club have got lots lined up for you all. On the 7th and 14th December we have endeavoured to put on two Christmas Nights, aimed at those who want to let their hair down and have a fantastic end of season celebration with their colleagues, friends and family. We still have spaces left, so call us on 01284 763402 to book! Inclusive in the price of £27.95 is an arrival drink, a homemade 3 course meal followed by mince pies, live band and disco, table decorations and your very own staffed bar. With a rate of £45 at the Quality Hotel just down the road, we think we’ve got it covered! As well as that, we will also have our Kid’s Christmas party in December – perhaps Father Christmas will be making an appearance? Then the grand Christmas Draw later in December – lots of great prizes to be won at 50p a go, who could resist? Further details to be released closer to the time! The club will be holding its Annual General Meeting on Sunday 3rd November, starting at 1:00pm in the clubroom. This is your chance to have your say in how the club is being run, and any ideas you’d like to share to bring us forward. We want as many members as possible to come along and share your views on how your club should best serve you and the surrounding community. Afterwards, stick around for a drink and the members draw – your chance to win some cash! That’s it for now, but with all that’s going on in these coming months, we hope to see you soon!
