editor’s letter

Hello

to all our readers, we hope you had a fabulous summer, and for once, the summer break gave us some sunshine, which makes a huge difference when you have the kids at home driving you mad! Back to school already though this week, so I will be doing a last minute shop this weekend for all the essential school uniform etc. I just hope they haven’t sold out of the sizes I need with all the organised mums who did their shopping at the start of the holidays, as you should (and which I promise to do next year... honest).

PEACE LOVE & JUICY COUTURE EDP SPRAY 100ML WAS £64 NOW £32 FROM SUPERDRUG

And with the kids going back to school, we have the worry of headlice trending amongst them, many hours spent in front of the telly combing through their hair to find the little blighters, so if you dread this, read page 15 which tells you the myths and truths about our itchy friends.

GONE GIRL (THRILLER) BY GILLIAN FLYNN [PAPERBACK BOOK] £7.99 RRP

And for our little readers we have our monthly kids page on page 40 to get their brains into gear ready for the start of term. So mums and dads, enjoy the 9-3pm break, because half term will be here before you know it! See you in October.

vitality.

Director, The Self Centre

This month we look at Shiatsu the Hands-On Way to Health Mention Shiatsu to people and you are likely to be met with a polite expression of: ‘I’d love to say I know what it’s all about but actually I don’t’. So what is Shiatsu? Shiatsu is a form of traditional Japanese bodywork which stimulates the body’s natural healing ability by applying gentle pressure to points across the body. The philosophy underlying Shiatsu is that vital energy (known as Chi) flows throughout the body in a series of channels called meridians. For many different reasons Chi can stop flowing freely and this then produces a symptom.

holistically and often therapies like Shiatsu, Thai Massage, Tuina Massage, Ayurvedic Medicine and even Yoga, Tai Chi and Qi Gong are often used preventatively to help keep the body in a state of balance or “ease”. This is a complete contrast to what we tend to do in the West which is do pretty much nothing until the body becomes so stressed it results in a state of “dis-ease”

Shiatsu practitioner Diego Robirosa explains: what the Shiatsu practitioner is trying to do is to rebalance the flow of Chi. One of the things you aim to do is to connect with your client in such a way that you induce a deep relaxation, under this condition the body has the ability to heal itself, the Chi flows and goes where it is needed. The Oriental model offers a wide range of options for understanding a symptom and Shiatsu as a therapy treats each individual uniquely and holistically. In the East there are many options for treating the person continued....

The remedies and advice suggested in this article are the personal opinion of the author. Please also inform your GP if you are planning to take any natural remedies and you are already on long term prescribed drugs.

health & beauty and then we decide to go and get someone else or drugs or surgery to try and fix it! Shiatsu treatments takes place on a padded mat or futon at floor level, though a massage table may also be used. Each session lasts approximately one hour. The Shiatsu practitioner will consider your state of health, the symptoms you are experiencing and, depending on your constitution and general energy levels, will use a variety of techniques to improve your energy flow. These may include gentle holding, pressing with palms, thumbs, fingers, elbows, knees and feet on the meridians and when appropriate, more dynamic rotations and stretches. Diego qualified as a Shiatsu Practitioner in 2007 with The East Anglian School of Shiatsu and I am a member of The Shiatsu Society. I have since been practising in Sudbury and Clare and also worked at West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds, treating staff and carers. From September 2013 I will be working part-time at Whipps Cross Hospital, London, giving Shiatsu as palliative care and I will also start working at The SelfCentre in Bury St Edmunds this month. Discover fitness outside the gym

With the sun showing no signs of fading this month, it’s time to think outside the box when it comes to fitness. Gone are the days spent slogging away in the gym; instead, many of us have welcomed outdoor activities with open arms - well, at least until the snow comes! Being fit and active is crucial for all of us; it’s pivotal to our wellbeing and getting the most from life. Regular exercise burns fat, builds muscle and increases the efficiency of your heart and lungs – so chop chop! Not only will it boost your energy levels, but your enthusiasm for life. With a background that includes sub 3-hour marathons and races of 100 miles of more, Kevin’s dedication brings not only the professional knowledge needed, but the personal experience too. Offering a mix of activities designed to put individuals and groups to the test, Positive Steps works to every level of fitness. One activity it has introduced to our region is Nordic Walking, in which clients carry poles to gain further benefits from the walking workout (come and try it for free on 3rd September and 8th October). The poles not only work the upper body muscles, but help to propel the walker

along, working the legs hard for optimum results. There to understand your current level of fitness and to ensure that you exercise at the correct intensity, thereby empowering you to achieve the results you want (get in touch for a free 20 minute consultation), Kevin has an impressive track record. HEAD LICE 1 2 3 4 5 6

MYTH: Head lice are so small you can’t see them with the naked eye FACT: Head Lice are the size of sesame seeds. They may be difficult to see with the naked eye, but not impossible. They are best viewed in natural light with a magnifying glass.

MYTH: You’re more likely to get head lice if you have poor personal hygiene FACT: Head lice are equal-opportunity parasites; they live exclusively on human blood. It doesn’t matter how often you wash your hair. It doesn’t matter if you have dandruff. They are attracted to blood, not poor hygiene.

MYTH: Your child is more likely to get head lice than you are FACT: Children are more inclined to get lice because they engage in frequent head-to-head contact - over

secrets, games, sports - and close contact is the primary way lice move from person to person. And though lots of parents are alarmed when their child comes home with lice, there’s simply no way to prevent kids from getting lice and, as disgusting as they may be, they’re not a medical problem - just a nasty nuisance!

MYTH: Head lice can jump from person to person FACT: Head lice can’t jump or fly, they can only crawl. And because head lice thrive solely on human blood, they move only from person to person, never from another animal such as a dog or cat. The most common way for head lice to get from one person to another is via head-to-head contact. They can also move around via shared hats, combs, and bedding, but because they die within a day or two without human contact, this path of transmission is much less likely.

MYTH: It’s important that you treat head lice quickly, as they spread disease FACT: Head lice don’t transmit infections, lead to scabies, or make children sick. In fact, they rarely, if ever, cause any harm -- just a lot of annoyance. Experts suggest that the greatest harm associated with head lice comes in the well- meaning but misguided use (and overuse) of toxic treatments to eradicate them.

MYTH: To successfully treat head lice, you need to see a doctor FACT: Head lice can be successfully treated at home with over-the-counter lice- killing shampoo and diligent

combing. Once you’re sure you’re dealing with live head lice, over-the-counter (OTC) remedies like anti-lice shampoos generally work, but nothing is 100% effective. You must apply two applications of medicated shampoo, the second one seven to 10 days after the first. In between, comb hair daily with a special nit comb. Combing is the most important weapon you have to get rid of head lice.

7

MYTH: You can use vinegar or mayonnaise as home remedies for treating head lice FACT: This may be a TRUE OR FALSE - depending on whom you talk to. There’s no scientific proof that home

8

MYTH: You must get rid of every last head louse, or another infestation will occur. FACT: Head lice and eggs in bedding, on towels, and around the house, usually die within days without a human

remedies such as mayonnaise, white vinegar, or tea tree oil work in getting rid of lice, but many parents say it worked for them. Advocates say that mayonnaise -- applied thickly and then kept on overnight under a shower cap -- smothers the lice, while vinegar destroys the glue that attaches nits to the hair.

host. So while you don’t have to worry about getting all the nits and adult lice from every crevice in the house, you do want to launder everything you can that has come in close contact with someone with lice: Bedding, hats, and towels. You’ll also want to vacuum spots where an infested person usually sits or lays. Don’t forget the car seats! The Moreton Hall Directory

home & lifestyle

This month I would like to offer the readers of the Moreton hall directory the opportunity to a FREE online consultation.

I am always looking to gain more knowledge and I came across a great article from Mark Coles which I wanted to share with you as I couldn’t put this subject better myself.

How many times have you asked a Personal Trainer for the best exercises for toning muscles? I want to tone my abs, I want to tone my arms!! How many people do you know who waste hours every week doing 100’s of crunches every morning in an attempt to get a six pack?!! What you really need to be asking for, is the best training/nutrition to help you get a defined physique with improved shape. The definition will come from being lean enough, and the shape will come from building muscle mass. And trust me here, the real shape comes when you get lean enough (around 10% body fat for males and 14% for women) . The main reason many people don’t see any shape, is because they don’t focus on building muscle. And the reason people don’t see definition, is because they don’t get lean enough to see it. Simple!! You won’t improve your physique, simply focussing on higher reps just to give you more tone, it just won’t happen. Once you’ve built the muscle mass, its how lean you are that will ultimately give you your end shape. Instead of switching your programme for high reps just to tone, focus on getting leaner through nutrition and smarter programming. Have you ever noticed someone with good muscle mass, and seen how the shapes form around each muscle when they’re very lean? That’s simply the end result of building a lot of muscle, and the lines around the muscles come when the body fat is really low. They don’t just switch the programme to try and tone it to reveal the shape!! But surely doing more ab crunches will make my abs look better? Sorry, it won’t!!

Local news Youth

National Citizen Service

So often we hear about the damage and anti-social behaviour of our youngsters, however, this issue looks at the acts of three sets of youngsters who have done deeds to help and support their community and friends.

Head Shave Four young girls and a boy had their heads shaved to raise funds to help a lady have an operation which she cannot have on the NHS. On Saturday 3rd August the four of them gathered at the youth club and cried as the hair stylist cut off their lovely hair. They raised £560 on the day and £800 already paid into bank from other fundraising and some still coming in. Well done them!

From Councillor Frank Warby. Contact Frank on 07818 455472 or email frankjwarby@aol.com

We are a group of youngsters that are appalled with the statistics that there are over 1.6 million homeless children throughout the UK, as a group we feel that it is essential that they feel wanted and that they are able to “Live, not only to survive” to this end we are going to make a Sensory Garden at Tayfen House (a home for the homeless) so the residents have a feeling of belonging and safety. These youngsters spent a week at the centre and rebuilt the pagoda and made a flower and herb garden. Well done them!

Youth Club Update

More Hair

This is yet another example of unselfishness, a young lady aged 14 with beautiful blond hair the full length of her back, had it cut off and donated it to a company who make wigs for children suffering from cancer. What an unselfish gift. Bravo!

On Sunday 11th August my wife and I attended the Echoes of the Past on Rougham Air field. This was put on by the Rougham Tower Association. Lots of exhibitions depicting war time memories, military vehicles and lots of GIs wandering around in original WW11 uniforms. There was also a rifle range and hovercraft rides, all in all a very good day out and fundraising for the Tower Fund.

After a conversation with the youth officer from Suffolk County Council, more talks are taking place to arrange to make the youth club available to youngsters 13 plus. This should help us keep youngsters 13 plus off the streets and give them something positive to do. We are looking forward to working with Suffolk County to make our youngsters feel part of our community. While on the subject of the club I am still looking for helpers, with enough helpers you would only be needed one night a term. The Club reopens again on Tuesday the 10th September; we are making this a subscription free night to encourage more members, so bring your 8 to 13 year old’s down and

see what’s on offer. We have lined up some extra activities and are looking to encourage some Art and Craft evenings. Anyone who would like to be involved would be very welcome.

Until next time take care. Frank

NEWS FROM MORETON HALL RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION Vision 2031 Responses to the latest document will have been submitted by the 9th August. One major issue related specifically to the development on Moreton Hall is the Section 106 contribution to infrastructure. Currently the houses designated for the estate are intended to fund the Eastern Relief Road, the cost of running electrical power to the area and provide ground for the school. I calculate that at a minimum this will increase the price of houses (excluding affordable houses) by minimum of ÂŁ70,000 per house without proving any other required infrastructure. The potential for some form of compromise deal seems inevitable with the probability of long term unacceptable consequences for the estate.

Travellers

22

Hopefully by the time you read this the travellers will have long departed. However there are worrying trends. Travellers on Layhill Covert Field have been an irregular feature over a number of years but previously their stays have been short and they have not moved on to other areas of the estate. I accept that they have rights and the Council has certain responsibilities but previous attempts to provide a site have been spectacularly unsuccessful as a result of the travellers behaviour. I, for once, applaud Eric Pickles comments but the issues need to be addressed on a sustainable The Moreton Hall Directory

basis to avoid another summer of chasing caravans around the estate.

Litter Summer seems to have brought about a rash of unsightly litter and my regular walk to Sainsbury’s has become a litter pick. I am particularly concerned about picnickers on the field who leave litter including bottles and bottle tops. The potential for injury to children and animals is obvious. People should be educated and encouraged to apply the country code to our open areas.

Bury Concert Club The Bury Concert Club provides 5 high class reasonably priced classical concerts every winter and as a fairly regular member and supporter I am concerned at the significant and unsustainable drop in membership. I would encourage residents to consider supporting this club and can provide details for anyone interested.

home & lifestyle Bury St Edmunds’ Pre-School Music Group Proves Popular Jo Jingles, the Pre-School Music & Movement Group, is proving popular with Bury St Edmunds’ Pre-School children. At The Hyndman Centre every Monday morning and at The Self Centre, Moreton Hall, every Tuesday morning during term time, youngsters and their parents enjoy fun music, singing and movement classes that provide a balance of active songs encouraging physical development and co-ordination skills, and activities such as instrument playing and interactive games that encourage listening and concentration skills. Dr Miriam Stoppard believes that “A child is more confident, usually speaks early and gains an early grasp of the rules of communication if started early in clapping games, group activities and musical games.” This is a view that is shared by Professor John Sloboda, Keele University, “Singing songs to your child widens their vocabulary and improves listening skills, both of which make learning to read easier.”

Moreton Hall’s Monthly Nature Watch by Woodland Ways

Moreton Hall’s Hoverflies Hoverflies are the erratic fliers of our gardens, hanging motionless in mid-air one second then dashing off in any direction the next. There are twenty or so species found regularly in gardens, and over 250 species in Britain, forming a visible and attractive part of our wildlife community. They mostly have the black and yellow stripes also worn by bees and wasps, in an attempt to fool us into thinking they are dangerous and best left alone. More importantly, it is designed to fool predators so the hoverflies are spared from beaks and jaws. Their flight pattern is so distinctive, however, that people are rarely fooled into being scared of a sting, and hoverflies make their living by sipping nectar. And as you might expect, when moving from flower to flower they carry grains of pollen and so fertilise your plants for you.

Hoverflies are the gardener’s friend, because their larvae are vicious predators. Many species of hoverfly have larvae which eat aphids by the dozen, or other sapsucking insects. Other species of hoverfly have larvae which eat decaying vegetation, or live in dirty stagnant water. The commonest species in our gardens is called the marmalade hoverfly, recognised by alternating thick and thin black stripes on its body. In some years it’s one of the most commonest of all our insects, and easy to see.

Join us at Woodland Ways...

...advice for life

3 simple reasons to use a Trust Fund to protect your assets

You can put any asset into Trust, whether it be cash, shares, property or other investments. 1. You can use a Bare Trust to clarify how you own a Property jointly with someone else 2. You can use an Interest In Possession Trust to allow some one to live in your Property or receive interest from an asset. At the same time the Trust will protect the asset or Property so it goes to your children when you want it to 3. You can use a Discretionary Trust to allow someone to benefit from your assets whilst allowing them to still be able to claim benefits. For example: Welfare or Housing.

home & lifestyle

Christ Church Moreton Hall I hope you all had a great summer, enjoyed the weather and got away for the holidays. Many things happened over the summer. Two serious things require comment. The first was: Have near-death experiences been ‘explained’. American researchers from the University of Michigan say that after studying rats who are about to die, they have found there is a sudden brain surge. They have speculated that a similar brain surge happens in humans when they die, and this might explain near-death experiences, such as seeing a light or an out of body experience. This has gained a lot of media attention because many people have come to faith after having such an experience. However, there are problems with these findings. The first is that human beings are not rats! It would be ethically wrong to test people who are about to die to see whether such brain surges take place. So we don’t know if humans have similar surges. Secondly, as Dr. Chris Chambers of Cardiff University says, “we should be extremely cautious before drawing any conclusions about human near-death experiences. It is one thing to measure brain activity in rats during cardiac arrest, and quite another to relate that to human experience.” In other words, just because rats have a brain surge human beings may not, and even if they do, it may not be a near-death experience. There is one further piece of evidence I would like to add. I know people who have had near-death experiences, and I have actually been present on a couple of occasions when

32

The Moreton Hall Directory

they have happened. Not everybody who nearly dies sees a shining light or has an out of body experience. However, those who do, they just know God has acted in their lives and it helps them to become a Christian. If you are interested in this and about faith, why not join us at the Flying Fortress public house in September. Watch out for the posters and leaflets for the Alpha course. For seven weekly evening sessions, in the company of other enquirers and with a really good carvery meal, you could find out more. The second serious event on the estate was, of course, the arrival of the travellers. While it did not affect everyone it was certainly true that for some people the peace, quiet and harmony which we all enjoy on Moreton Hall was severely damaged while the travellers remained. Mr. Pickles, the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, says that our police forces and our local authorities have the powers to move these people on when they cause damage and harm. Those who have spoken to me in private say sadly our local police force stubbornly refused to do so even though there was evidence; causing the Borough to be perceived as powerless. These circumstances required the Borough to erect many barriers on other

sites and conduct daily refuse collections. These actions were both costly and problematic. Many residents were so cowed by a series of antisocial acts they failed to report the abuse. Those who did received little sympathy from the police. Some felt the police were actually hostile to them. I have been told that trouble was not confined to Moreton Hall, other parts of the town were affected, but once again people were too cowed to complain. It is clear therefore that community leaders, the Borough and the Police, need to meet urgently. We all need an appropriate strategy to ensure the scenes of distress caused to parishioners on Moreton Hall and the town never happen again. I do hope the Suffolk Constabulary will respond positively to this plea and look forward to hearing from them in the near future. Yours sincerely, Revd. Canon Jonathan Ford. Minister Christ Church Moreton Hall

I have missed you! by Andrew Southwood

T

HE ‘ODD’ numbered years can be a bit of a sporting damp squib. With no significant football tournament or an Olympics to get stuck into, the summers are never quite what they should be. Without the misery of England not reaching another quarter final, and the marriage testing back to back games every night on the box, it’s just a bit too relaxing. Confounding this sporting drought, the initial excitement of a home Ashes series was quickly over, as the Aussies predicted lack of skill with the bat proved to be alarmingly accurate. Not that I am complaining. I was brought up watching us relentlessly lose at cricket. Now, although I cannot watch it (the lack of live Test Cricket on terrestrial television is an outrage, and something that will ultimately damage the game beyond repair), have enjoyed moments as best I can via digital radio and the internet. Thankfully the football season has at last returned. In many ways the opening 6 weeks of the season are the best. I can be buoyant, with wildly optimistic predictions for the season ahead burning brightly. Meanwhile, back in the real world, Ipswich will be kicking about mid-lower table by Christmas and another season without Premier League football in Suffolk will be all but a certainty. Closer to home, Bury Town will be hoping to clinch promotion this year, as their new ground will be one welcome (and authorised) addition to the fields of Moreton Hall.

With some talk of football, my son has been asking to go to another ‘big ground’ match and I will of course dutifully oblige. I just need to sell the car and get some additional part time work to pay for the tickets. To mark the start of the season I also acquired some goalie gloves for him. It may sound selfish, but there was a bit of an ulterior motive, as now he has no excuse to get in goal and let me take some shots at him for a change! Finally, I am not devaluing good old Andy, who finally held his nerve (just) at SW19 in June, and Froome who made it back-toback Tour de France wins for England. Both immense achievements, but nothing gets close to a World Cup year, and of course the inevitable heartache that follows. In the meantime, this Autumn there’s just the small matter of earning our invitation to 2014 Brazilian football extravaganza, then we can start to make some real plans for next summer… taking into account the obscene amount of live late night football that will need to be watched.

Didn’t make the Grade ? – It’s not the end of the world. As our students come through the annual ritual of results day we can expect a few certainties: l a barrage of photographs of teenagers leaping for joy (usually twins!) l photographs of others in shock as they deal with disappointment l if the national results are better than last year – cries that standards are falling l if the results are worse – fears that exams are too tough l politicians will try to point score l pubs will make a killing in celebration and consolidation drinks In the midst of all this teenagers are expected to make life-altering contingency plans.

Frightened of Maths?

The lesson? Don’t panic! If you missed out on the grade you hoped for – be it at A Level or GCSE – don’t worry. You have many options open to you. These setbacks are usually temporary. Richard Branson – left school at 16 Ian McEwan – didn’t get the grades to take up his Cambridge scholarship David Davis – didn’t get the grades to take up university place Winston Churchill – failed at school, failed entrance exams to Royal Military College Bill Gates – dropped out of university Steven Spielberg – dropped out of Junior High School from the learning disabled class Ringo Starr – dropped out of school at 15 Many of our most successful people experienced disappointing results - it did not stop them it was merely the start of something different and better.

Pauls Jobs for the Month Flower Garden l You can plant early bulbs including crocuses, snowdrops, winter aconites and narcissi. As a rule plant bulbs about three times its own depth measured from top to bottom l You can sow hardy annuals such as calendulas, larkspurs and sweet peas also biennials such as wallflowers, foxgloves and Canterbury bells l September is a good month for planting evergreen shrubs including hollies and conifers l The middle of September is the very latest date for planting Christmas hyacinth bulbs so that they are in flower for the 25th December l Look out for opportunities to collect seeds from your perennials l Cut back plants overhanging pavements or boundaries l Order bare-rooted roses for planting in autumn l Continue to deadhead and water your plants

Vegetable Garden l You can sow winter spinach and onions the earlier the better in this month l Lift and harvest your late potatoes and onions l Keep the hoe going to prevent weeds getting the upper hand l Keep those green tomatoes on the plants until there is a noticeable cooling in the weather then bring them indoors to ripen l Sow hardy varieties of broad beans at the end of September for an early crop

General Maintenance l Scarify and spike the lawn and apply an autumn lawn feed l If you are thinking of creating a new lawn early September is good for sowing lawn seed though delay turfing a new lawn until the end of the month or October. l If you have bald patches in your lawn scuff up the soil with a fork and apply grass seed and keep watering l The last hedge clip of the year can take place this month to keep them neat and tidy and control their size l Top up bird baths regularly

Grown for the intriguing papery lanterns which enclose its bright orange autumn fruits. The stems of vibrant lanterns can be cut for dried flower arrangements, or left on the plant where they add winter interest; slowly becoming ornate skeletons. This undemanding perennial is easy to grow and will thrive in most situations. Height: 75cm (30”). Spread: 90cm (36”) Grow Chinese lantern plants in any moist, well drained soil, in full sun or semi shade. Feed and water regularly until plants are fully established. In spring, remove old stems and apply a mulch of well rotted manure to the base of the plant. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps to maintain their vigour.

Kate Jackson & Cate Hadley Wednesday 14th August – Sunday 29th September 2013

‘Margin’: a new way of seeing an old town. This exhibition of paintings and found objects by Kate Jackson and Cate Hadley will reveal the margins of Bury St Edmunds. From the estate houses and industrial sites that sit on its periphery, to the wastelands and forgotten playing fields of its interior, Margin aims to charter these unchartered territories.

This exhibition explores wider themes of home, history, preservation and lineage. Traces made by our footsteps whilst walking the town’s periphery and exploring it’s interior add another layer to the town’s history. The photographs taken and objects found are moments in time, giving us only a hint of our precedence. The paintings that form the majority of ‘Margin’, aim to expand on photographs; edifying, stabilising and magnifying overlooked areas of our common landscape, preserving a moment in time that may last decades but may also disappear in months. Join us for a celebration of this exhibition at our open viewing evening on Saturday 14th September 6.00 – 7.30pm. All gallery visitors will be welcomed with a complimentary glass of wine. This free event will be followed by Flamenco Barrulla in concert in The Apex auditorium. Tickets for this concert may be obtained through The Apex box office on 01284 758000. DVD RELEASE OF THE MONTH NOW YOU SEE ME

Starring: Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Isla Fisher, Woody Harrelson, Morgan Freeman Release Date: 03/09/2013

RED 2

Now You See Me pits an elite FBI squad in a game of cat and mouse against “The Four Horsemen,” a super-team of the world’s greatest illusionists. “The Four Horsemen” pull off a series of daring heists against corrupt business leaders during their performances, showering the stolen profits on their audiences while staying one step ahead of the law.

RUSH

Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Bruhl, Olivia Wilde, Natalie Dormer Director: Ron Howard

Chris Hemsworth puts pedal to the metal in the high-octane story of rival Formula 1 legends James Hunt and Niki Lauda. It’s 1976 and Formula 1 motor racing is dominated by two contrasting larger-than-life personalities. Austrianborn Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl) is a technically brilliant driver who worked his way methodically through the ranks to claim the number one spot at Ferrari. His rival at McLaren is handsome, charismatic, blond Englishman James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth). Hunt’s skill behind the wheel belies a louche playboy image. But this is a sport where vehicles and drivers are pushed to the absolute limit. Death can be just a heartbeat away! Written by Oscar nominated ‘The Queen’ screenwriter Peter Morgan, ‘Rush’ is another nailbiting true story of triumph and tragedy from ‘Apollo 13’ director Ron Howard. The thrilling golden age of Formula 1 is meticulously re-created, while the sporting rivalry is brought brilliantly to life by Daniel Bruhl and ‘Thor’ star Chris Hemsworth.

Pete Cannon also lends a hand with production producing the album’s opening 2 tracks. An exclusive super-deluxe edition, featuring a signed poster, AAA lanyard and Rizzle Kicks pendant, is available exclusively from the Rizzle Kicks online store. Hello all and welcome to the September edition of the Moreton Hall directory! First up, we just want to say a big thank you to our members who have helped us in making this year at the club one of the best we’ve ever had. The support from our members, new and old has been phenomenal. As a way of saying thank you to you all, we are going to be hosting a “Members Loyalty Night” at the club, which give us the chance to say thanks, and give you the chance to have a couple of drinks and a buffet on us! This is on Saturday October 12th, so please save the date! More Details will be out closer to the time. Football season is now underway, and on our big screen in the clubroom we’re showing all the matches we can that are broadcast on BT Sports, Sky Sports and terrestrial TV. We’ve also re-launched our loyalty card scheme for members, whereby every time you buy a drink during a game, you’ll get a stamp – collect twenty of them and you’ll receive a free drink! Combined with upcoming food offers, like a burger and a pint for £6.95, or 2 meals for £9.95, and we think we’re on to a winner this season. Keep checking our emails for further details on these food offers. In upcoming events, our very own club treasurer Nathan is devising a Sports quiz on Saturday 7th September to test your knowledge of all things sports related. As ever, there are cash prizes up for grabs, and when the entrance fee is a mere £1 per person (maximum 6 on a team), there’s not an awful lot to lose. Come on down if you think you’ve got what it takes to walk away with the prize! On Saturday 14th September we will be hosting the second of our food themed nights, which is the glorious sounding Steak Night. We’re still deciding if the tag line should be “That’s a whole lotta meat” – though it is fairly appropriate for what will surely be the star of the night – a juicy, fat 24oz rump steak! We will also be offering the chance to sample meats that cannot be classed as your average – kangaroo steak, anyone? Perhaps Ostrich? We will be serving from 6pm on that day, so if you fancy the chance to try something new, or - like I am - are sold by the sheer size of the rump steak, then come down on the 14th to get your teeth into our steaks. Pre orders for this date are essential. On 21st September we are having Smartie, our reggae regular, back to play some chilled out classics in the clubroom. It’s free to get in for members of course, and he’ll start from 8:30pm. Always a brilliant night showcasing the best of our member’s dance moves, so do come by for a great night of music. On Wednesday 18th September, as part of The Greene Kings Eastern Festival, we’re able to offer tickets for the Great Yarmouth Race Day. If you’d like to go on that day, just pop and see us at the bar and put your name down – the only cost incurred would be the travel costs there and back, the entrance is free when going with our group, so please do come down (and perhaps take the next day off as holiday)

and take advantage of our hospitality offer! The community centre is of course available to community groups for hiring during the week, or if you’d like to hold your special event here, whether it be a wedding, birthday party, or any other event that requires a bit of a party, please do get in contact with Kerrie Swadling at the centre to enquire for 2014 and beyond. Hiring the hall during the week costs from £17 per hour with tea/coffee/catering facilities available, with further discounts available for regular bookers, or charitable organisations and fundraising events. At the weekend, to hire the whole hall - this has a capacity of 250 - complete with tables, chairs and your own staffed private bar, starts from £170 to hire from 7pm to 12am. And now a message from ROSPA, one of our regular hall hirers, with a question - are you a good driver? Silly question really, of course you are; could you be better? The Suffolk group of the RoSPA Advanced Drivers and Riders meets at the Moreton Hall community Centre on the 1st Monday of the month excluding bank holidays, January and August. If you would like to find out more visit their website at http:// www.rospa-suffolk.org.uk/ or just come along to one of their group evenings. July was a treasure hunt and BBQ; September is a talk on ‘Client Centred Learning’ and the latest techniques for teaching people to drive; November is a quiz night. It costs £10 if you decide to join the group and the advanced driver training is free. And Model Junction of Whiting Street in the town centre also hires the hall for Race Meetings most Wednesday evenings at the Community Centre for Radio Control Cars. The cars they race are 1/10th scale electric on road cars and also GT12 SupaStox and Mardaves. You will require your own car to race but all are welcome to come and have a go. Please note all under 16’s must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times. Spectators are most welcome although viewing space is limited, come along and see what they do; it may be the start of a new hobby! For more information and race dates go to www.modeljunction.com. The car boot sale for September is being held on Sunday 15th this month. It’s likely to be the last one of the year where we have weather good enough to do so – after that, we’ll be holding table top sales in the hall. The car boot/table top sale takes place as ever, every third Sunday of the month. And that’s it for the month; of course, if you have any questions or enquiries regarding our events or facilities, please do get in contact with us. Otherwise, we hope to see you soon!
