Hello We hope you all enjoyed the Summer, whether you went away or just had a few days out, the time soon flies. Now the nights are drawing in and the mornings are getting chillier, this can only mean one thing... Autumn is knocking on our door! In our house we have to wait till at least October before the heating can be turned on, so for now, wearing my onesie and thick socks will have to do.
For getting the skin ready for the cool temperatures this month, go to 10 where there we have a few tips to help you out. Our recipe of the month on page 26 will warm us up with a yummy fruit pudding. And so you don’t have to hide the body under thick jumpers and forget the fitness regime, go to page 18 and see what Joe advises to keep body fit this September. See you in October!

Whilst writing this though, the family are getting prepared for a final blast of Summer fun – a bank holiday weekend of camping, YES, CAMPING!! So if I’m feeling the cold now inside a house with bricks, windows and carpets, I will definitely be feeling it in a tent! How do I pack for all weather scenarios? My suitcase alone will take up most of the car boot space that we have, let alone the camping gear and other essentials. Saying that, my essential hairdryer and hair straighteners won’t be joining us, as we have booked a site with no electricity. Wish me and my hair good luck!

WI News This month we welcomed three new visitors and they didn’t mind joining in the games and fun we had this month. For a change we decided to have a go at Curling – not on the ice of course, an indoor version that worked on the vinyl floor. We weren’t very good, well the floor was bumpy and we developed some new rules like scores won by ricocheting off the back wall still counted!! But hey! – who was counting! We had some word/picture games as well, all washed down with some Buck’s Fizz. Coffee and cake to finish and a good fun evening for all!

Autumn Skin Care Yes! You can finally feel it. The early morning breeze is beginning to chill ever so slightly. Autumn will soon make its grand entrance. But with cooling temperatures comes dry skin and chapped lips. Before your skin starts to feel the changing temperature, prepare your beauty regime with these autumn skin care essentials. Hydrate!
Cheap as chips, organic beauty tip number one: drink a lot of water! Just because you aren’t sweating all the time doesn’t mean you should stop carrying your trusty water bottle. Water will keep you (and all your parts) hydrated and luminous.
Help heal sun-drenched skin
If you’ve spent a lot of time in the sun, try a fast-acting dark spot treatment serum to help fade and prevent dark spots, age spots, and freckles. The serum helps fade dark spots, reduces hyper-pigmentation, and brightens and evens skin tone. There are many good products on the market to try.
Don’t get burned
Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean you can forget the SPF protection! Buy sunscreen that protects skin from UVB and UVA rays.
Other Autumn beauty tips:
Make a natural moisturiser
Start with an oily, buttery base: almond, sesame, jojoba, olive, and coconut oils work well, as do cocoa and shea butters. Add aloe, roses, oatmeal, honey, ginger, etc. Many herbs and foods have amazing, skin benefiting qualities.
The right colour
Autumn is the ideal time to paint your lips a deep burgundy. Try out some deeper shades, be daring this season!
Fading fast
The Summer holidays seem so far away now and with that your tan that took all those months of sitting in the garden sunbathing to build up is fading away, and the pasty look is appearing, but don’t despair, just get the good old fake tan out and apply every 3-4 days for your skin to glow throughout this cooler season. Who needs the sun anyway?
Exfoliate dry, flaky skin one to three times a week with fruits and sugar, or fruits and oatmeal. Use a hydrating mask (made from natural ingredients, such as banana and chocolate, avocado, etc.) once a week. Use a cleanser that moisturises skin, rather than one that rids skin of its natural oils. Buy lots and lots of organic olive oil. Place olive oil on problem skin areas (think feet, elbows and knees).

This month as we head into the changes of Autumn, we look at the benefits of Meditation/Mindfulness & Relaxation techniques in helping us cope better with the stress of change whilst also improving our immunity to many common illnesses. It’s a piece of advice yogis have given for thousands of years: take a deep breath and relax. Watch the tension melt from your muscles and all your niggling worries vanish. Somehow we all know that relaxation is good for us, but we are completely rubbish at it!! Now the hard science has caught up: a comprehensive scientific study showing that deep relaxation changes our bodies on a genetic level has just been published. What researchers at Harvard Medical School discovered is that, in long-term practitioners of relaxation methods such as yoga and meditation, far more ‘’disease-fighting genes’’ were active, compared to those who practised no form of relaxation. In particular, they found genes that protect from disorders such as pain, infertility, high blood pressure and even rheumatoid arthritis were switched on. The changes, say the researchers, were induced by what they call ‘’the relaxation effect’’, a phenomenon that could be just as powerful as any medical drug but without the side effects. “We found a range of disease-fighting genes were active in the relaxation practitioners that were not active in the control group,’’ Dr Herbert Benson, associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, who led the research, says. “The experiment, which showed just how responsive genes are to behaviour, mood and environment, revealed that genes can switch on, just as easily as they switch off. After two months, their bodies began to change: the genes that help fight inflammation, kill diseased cells and protect the body from cancer all began to switch on.’’
More encouraging still, the benefits of the relaxation effect were found to increase with regular practice: the more people practised relaxation methods such as meditation or deep breathing, the greater their chances of remaining free of arthritis and joint pain with stronger immunity, healthier hormone levels and lower blood pressure. But just how can relaxation have such wide-ranging and powerful effects? Research has described the negative effects of stress on the body. Linked to the release of the stress-hormones adrenalin and cortisol, stress raises the heart rate and blood pressure, weakens immunity and lowers fertility. By contrast, the state of relaxation is linked to higher levels of feel-good chemicals such as serotonin and to the growth hormones which repairs cells and tissue. Indeed, studies show that relaxation has virtually the opposite effect, lowering heart rate, boosting immunity and enabling the body to thrive.
The remedies and advice suggested in this article are the personal opinion of the author. Please also inform your GP if you are planning to take any natural remedies and you are already on long term prescribed drugs.

health & beauty ‘’On a biological level, stress is linked to fight-flight and danger,’’ Dr Jane Flemming, a London GP, says. ‘’In survival mode, heart rate rises and blood pressure shoots up. Meanwhile muscles, preparing for danger, contract and tighten. And non-essential functions such as immunity and digestion go by the wayside.’’ Relaxation, on the other hand, is a state of rest, enjoyment and physical renewal. Free of danger, muscles can relax and food can be digested. The heart can slow and blood circulation flows freely to the body’s tissues, feeding it with nutrients and oxygen. This restful state is good for fertility, as the body is able to conserve the resources it needs to generate new life. (with thanks to www.foodmatters.tv) For an simple way to allow your body to experience the “relaxation effect” you need to practice learning to focus on breathing deeply and slowly out and time your breaths to 5 breaths per minute (bit of maths means that is 6 secs to breathe in and 6 secs to breathe out)Note: the average person maybe breathing at 10 -15 breaths per minute!!

This month Sue Lucente talks about Nutrition and Osteoporosis ... Nutrition and lifestyle play a really important role in the health of our bones. As children we need a healthy diet in order to provide all the vitamins and minerals required for our bones to develop properly. Calcium deficiency in childhood will result in reduced bone mass which can increase your risk of osteoporosis in later life. Good sources of calcium are foods such as cheese, milk, yoghurts, spinach, sardines, canned salmon, tofu and almonds. Vegetarians can increase their calcium intake by including dark green vegetables in their diet, kale is particularly good. By eating freshly prepared meals containing these ingredients you can ensure a good calcium intake. Encourage children to drink milk rather than fizzy drinks, even the diet versions, some studies have shown that there may be a link between high consumption of fizzy drinks and lower bone density. In order to absorb the calcium in our diet effectively we need to have sufficient levels of vitamin D. This vitamin is obtained in part by exposure to sunlight and also found naturally in egg yolks, mackerel, salmon, sardines and tuna. Some foods are enriched with vitamin D, mainly dairy products. To maintain or improve you vitamin D levels include the above foods in your diet regularly. Particularly during the winter months when there is less sunlight. Smokers should try to give up or certainly cut down on the amount of cigarettes they smoke as nicotine is harmful to bone

making cells as well as damaging to blood vessels. Alcohol also has an effect, too much interferes with our ability to absorb calcium and vitamin D. Once we reach the age of 30 our bone density and muscle mass starts to decline. Exercise can help to maintain muscle mass and strength. Some resistance training is good, although it does not have to be heavy weights. Walking is an excellent form of exercise and will increase bone density in the lower body with the added bonus of taking in some sunlight to boost your vitamin D.

Great article from Jeff Kuhland which I would like to share with you this month.
What Is a Foam Roller, How Do I Use It, and Why Does It Hurt? Self-myofascial release is a fancy term for self-massage to release muscle tightness or trigger points. This method can be performed with a foam roller, lacrosse ball, Theracane, or your own hands. By applying pressure to specific points on your body you are able to aid in the recovery of muscles and assist in returning them to normal function. Normal function means your muscles are elastic, healthy, and ready to perform at a moment’s notice.
Left photo: Calf bottom. Right photo: Calf top.
Do I Have Tight Muscles or Trigger Points? Trigger points are specific “knots” that form in muscles. They are unique and can be identified because they will refer pain. Pain referral, for our purposes, can most easily be described as the pain felt when pressure is applied to one area of the body, but the pain is felt or radiated in another area. A common example of a trigger point is felt while foam rolling your iliotibial (IT) band as it causes pain to radiate up to the hip or all the way down the leg to the ankle. When rolling or working on tight/sore muscles you will experience discomfort or pain. Think of it like the pain you get while stretching. It should be uncomfortable, but not unbearable, and when you are done it should feel better. Left photo: Chest - front delt. Right photo: Lats.
Why Am I Doing Something That Hurts? For many, deep tissue massage is easy to understand. Ideally someone is able to work out the knots in your muscles, and it is commonly known this process may be uncomfortable and at times painful. Self-myofascial release provides the user the ability to control the healing and recovery process by applying pressure in precise locations, because only you can feel exactly what is happening. It is always recommended to consult with your physician or physical therapist for therapeutic/sharp pain and receive approval before starting self-myofascial release. For most people you will be cleared immediately and your doctor will encourage the practice. Releasing trigger points helps to reestablish proper movement patterns and pain free movement, and ultimately, to enhance performance. Utilizing stretching alone is not always enough to release muscles tightness, which is why foam rollers have thrived on the mass market. Imagine a bungee cord with a knot tied into it and then envision stretching the cord. This creates tension, stretching the unknotted portion of the muscle and the attachment points. The knot, however, has remained unaltered. Foam rolling can assist in breaking up these muscle knots, resuming normal blood flow and function. The goal to any corrective or recovery technique is to get you back to the point of normal functioning, as if nothing was ever wrong. When was the last time you trained like you were a teenager, going hard without a second thought, and injuries were something that only happened due to physical trauma like a 250lb linebacker hitting you?

Self-myofascial release, also known as “foam rolling,” has transformed from a once mysterious technique used only by professional athletes, coaches, and therapists to a familiar everyday practice for people at all levels of fitness. Recent information, technology, and affordable products have introduced an increasing array of training and recovery methods to the average person. What Causes Trigger Points and Tight Muscles? Both have the same contributing factors including training, flexibility, movement patterns, posture, nutrition, hydration, rest, stress, and other lifestyle factors. Our bodies learn to compensate for what we throw at them every day, but we can exceed our ability to recover via too many intense workouts, poor posture, and other lifestyle factors. This is when you need assistance using recovery techniques or through seeing a professional. If you lived a perfect life with everything in balance, you would theoretically never have either of these conditions, however I’ve yet to meet that person.
How Does Self-Myofascial Release Work? Deep compression helps to break up or relax tight muscles and adhesions formed between muscle layers and their surroundings. Imagine you are tenderizing your own muscles. They should be soft and supple like a baby’s muscles. However, if our muscles are not taken care of properly we can experience loss of flexibility, adhesions, and painful Left photo: IT band bottom. Right photo: IT band top. movement. The compression allows normal blood flow to return and restoration of healthy tissue. Our bodies naturally want to be healthy and strong, but sometimes an extra boost is needed to achieve optimal muscle and tissue health.
How Do I Know What to Foam Roll and How to Do It? Areas to focus on can be identified in two different ways. The first is through screenings. If you have followed the last two articles - squat screening and hip hinge screening- and have had struggles with either movement, you should include foam rolling in your workout and recovery program. You may target specific areas/muscles that relate to the movements you are focusing on. If after using the foam roller your movement improves, you have a more specific strategy to follow. Secondly, trigger points and tight muscles can be found through self-exploration, utilizing the list of techniques below and exploring each one. To foam roll properly, apply moderate pressure to a specific muscle or muscle group using the roller and your bodyweight. You should roll slowly, no more than one inch per second. When you find areas that are tight or painful, pause for several seconds and relax as much as possible. You should slowly start to feel the muscle releasing, and after 5-30 seconds the discomfort or pain should lessen. If an area is too painful to apply direct pressure, shift the roller and apply pressure on the surrounding area and gradually work to loosen the entire area. The goal is to restore healthy muscles - it is not a pain tolerance test. You may also use other objects to work on muscles such as a tennis ball, lacrosse ball, Theracane, or Trigger Point Therapy Kit. Never roll a joint or bone. Avoid rolling your lower back. To target these muscles I recommend using tennis or lacrosse balls. If you are having issues with your neck, refer these issues to an appropriate medical professional, as these areas they can be more sensitive and require more advanced attention.
Left photo: Lacrosse ball - hip. Right photo: Lacrosse ball - shoulder blade.
What Happens After Rolling? You may be sore the next day. It should feel as if your muscles have been worked/released, however you should not push yourself to the point of excessive soreness. Drink plenty of water, get enough sleep, and eat clean. This will help to flush your system and fuel your muscles more effectively. Give it 24-48 hours before focusing on the same area again.

Abbeycroft Leisure, which manages Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre, has formed a strategic partnership with West Suffolk College to provide an 18 station fitness studio to help enhance the offer the College provides to their sports students.
Warren Smyth, Chief Executive of Abbeycroft Leisure, said: “We have worked with the College for a number of years but the provision of the fitness studio marks the start of a long term partnership between Abbeycroft and West Suffolk College.
The new fitness studio, which is situated opposite the College, will be available for sports students to use as part of their learning experience from 9am to 5pm during weekdays in term time. The new studio will then be used by customers and members of Abbeycroft Leisure during the weekends and out of term time.
“The College is directly opposite the Leisure Centre and it makes sense that we work more closely with our neighbours who are committed to providing the next generation of sports providers. This project benefits not only College students but also Centre members by providing additional fitness studio space at busy weekends and evenings.”
The equipment is provided by West Suffolk College, with Abbeycroft Leisure providing the space. The investment underpins the College’s commitment to providing an exceptional learning experience for its learners, and expands on the existing access that students already have to the Leisure Centre. The new facility is just the start of a long-term partnership which has been formed by Abbeycroft and the College. The partnership will see more joint projects in the future including a student work experience programme to support students in their studies as well as paid employment opportunities.

Nikos Savvas, Principal of West Suffolk College, said: “We are committed to our students and their success and this includes offering outstanding facilities and resources to facilitate educational excellence. “To this end, we are delighted to be working with Abbeycroft Leisure Centre. This partnership cements our ethos to develop mutually beneficial, strong and sustainable collaborations that contribute to our leaners’ success. I look forward to working together further in the future.”

Hospice shop with a little ‘love’ and ‘soul’ reopens
Shoppers flocked to a new-look charity shop on Monday 11th August when it opened its doors to the public following a major refurbishment. The store had been closed for three weeks for the makeover, which has seen the interior transformed into a cosy ‘home’. New flooring and lighting have been installed throughout, with previously hidden brickwork exposed and redundant entrances closed off. The interiors are the brainchild of interior designer Marianne Nielson, who has previously worked with large retailers including M&S and smaller independents. She said: “All the volunteers have been excellent and have worked so hard. One of the main aims was to give the shop a bit of soul, so I thought I would make it look like a home. We wanted to make it feel warm and welcoming because the shop is about charity, and the Hospice is warm and welcoming. I wanted to bring that essence into the place.” A light and airy ‘entrance hall’ greets customers as they enter, menswear is now in a ‘library’ area, while entertainment items are in a reading room and ladieswear and accessories are in the boutique.

“It has been a balance to ensure all ages feel comfortable in the shop. I didn’t want it to look too trendy, so we have mixed upcycled furniture donations with playful touches, like the accessories wall,” added Marianne. Volunteers have spent weeks helping to source suitable furniture from items donated to the Hospice. A team also worked on modifying, painting and upholstering a seating area. The shop is open 9.30am-5pm Monday-Friday and 9.30am-4pm on Saturdays.

Recipe of the month
Baked fruity autumn pudding This pudding is bursting with autumn flavours, and can be made up to a day ahead just reheat in the microwave Serves: 4-6 Cook: 2 hours
Ingredients 450g mixed autumn fruit - we used ripe plums, peeled apples, pears and blackberries
Method
Sift flour into mixing bowl. Mix in suet, remaining sugar and zest. Add a few drops of water, working it through with a cutlery knife, then keep adding water until you have soft dough. Using your hand, bring the dough together into a smooth ball. Tip out onto a lightly floured surface. Tear the dough into ¾ and ¼ parts. Roll the larger portion into a rough circle, approx 20cm. Drop into the basin and press up the sides until you have a slight overhang. Tip the filling into the pastry case. Roll out the remaining ¼ to make a lid, then press the pastry edges together to firmly seal. Tuck the protruding flaps of parchment down onto pastry.
Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Cut 2 x 5cmwide strips of parchment and lay them up the sides of a 1.2-litre pudding basin, making a cross on the bottom of the dish. Make sure there is some overhang to help you release the pudding when cooked. Grease again. Lay a square of foil and equal-size square of greased parchment on top of each other, folding a pleat down the middle.
Put foil/parchment on top (foil side up), pressing and squeezing the foil round the edges to make a fitted lid. Tie string securely around the lid, making a handle with extra doubled-up string. Put in a deep roasting tin, then pour boiling water to 1-2cm below foil line. Cook for 2 hrs, topping up water level if it gets too low. Unwrap, release edges using parchment tabs and invert onto a plate.
2 tbsp butter, plus extra for greasing 200g caster sugar 1 ½ tsp cinnamon 300g self-raising flour 140g shredded suet zest 1 lemon
26
To make the filling, chop plums, apples and pears into 1cm cubes and place in a bowl with the blackberries. Add butter, broken into bits, 125g of sugar and cinnamon. Stir and put to the side.

Moreton Hall’s Monthly Nature Watch by Woodland Ways
Rare insect found in Moreton Hall In early August, Woodland Ways member Claire Reid found a large and distinctive insect in her Moreton Hall garden, but it wasn’t in any of the identification books. With the help of Woodland ways chair Nick Sibbett, and the website www.ispotnature.org, it was identified as the alder sawfly Cimbex connatus. Its large, juicy, green caterpillar eats the leaves of alder trees, hence its common name. As well as the native alder, found in wetlands, it also eats the non-native European alder species widely planted on Moreton Hall, such as the Grey Alder planted alongside Symonds Road in the 1980s.
it has been recorded with steadily increasing frequency throughout southern and eastern England, as far north as Yorkshire. Modern records for Suffolk are few, with one in Lackford in 2012 and another one in Haverhill earlier this year, according to Martin Sanford at Suffolk Biological Records Centre. Not many people can claim to have found the third modern occurrence of a species in their County. In May’s Moreton Hall Directory, the use of resources such as ispotnature and Suffolk Biological Records centre were explained, and they’ve certainly provided extremely interesting information for Claire’s insect.
The adult alder sawfly superficially looks like a hornet when flying, but lacks the narrow waist and sting of the hornet. Adults are carnivorous, but also may eat nectar.
Look out for this species in your garden. It is increasing, perhaps due to accidental introductions with imported alder trees or due to climate change. Someone has to spot it for the fourth time in Suffolk this century, and it could be you.
The earliest Suffolk sighting was in 1904, and the species was not seen again in Britain until 1997 when it turned up near Salisbury in Wiltshire. Since then,

DAVERS COURT
I had the pleasure, along with my wife, to attend the opening of the new Davers Court Care Home. In 2012, Care UK took responsibility for Suffolk Council’s 16 Care Homes, one of which was Davers Court on Shakers Lane. This modern 200 room establishment is a very valuable asset to our ageing population. The layout and exceptional high standard of the rooms and equipment complemented by the light visual appearance, makes one feel more at home than in an oldfashioned stereo type home. More information can be found on www.careuk.com.
OVER
60’ s CLUB
As from October the club will meet each Tuesday from 11am until 1.30pm, I have found that meeting once a month did not give any consistency and people forget when its on. Remember, every Tuesday 11am - 1.30pm
FOOTBALL AND SCHOOL I have no update on these matters, we are still waiting for confirmation regarding the school, which will in turn give an update on the football. I will publish as soon as I know anything.
“A” LEVELS After reading about the great results achieved by our students on their “A” levels, I feel we must congratulate the students, teachers and indeed all staff who have worked so hard, sometimes under difficult circumstances, to help them to achieve top marks. We wish them luck in finding places in their preferred universities. Those students who did not get the marks they wanted, its not the end of the world, there are some universities taking on students with lower grade results. There are many opportunities out there, apprenticeships being one of them. A lot of companies offer apprentice places, St Edmundsbury Borough Council, Havebury Housing Association and others. So chin up, all is not lost.
LINK ROAD
At last the money is there and planning permission granted, everything is now ready for the start on the relief road, pending no further hiccups or unwarranted delays. Yes, its true, the road won’t solve all our infrastructure problems, but it will reduce the volume of traffic using the estate as a rat run to the A14. Something is better than nothing.
PAST MAYOR’S CHARITY
On Thursday, Patsy and I attended the Mayors presentation of his Charity fund, Councillor Terry Buckle (past Mayor) presented Cheques to Cancer UK of £3,000 represented by Mrs Norene Plumb and Miss Sarah Kesterton. Moreton Hall Youth Club also received £3,000 represented by Councillors Patsy Warby and Frank Warby, the third cheque for £1,800 was presented to Mr Peter Knights of Mount Farm Surgery. This Mayors Charity was organised by the Mayor along with his secretary Mrs Ruth Pusteria and not forgetting the Mayors officer Mr Ian Playle. A grateful thanks from all of us. Great job Terry, we hope you had an enjoyable Mayoral year. Tickets are now on sale for this years Mayors New Years Dinner Dance, which will be held in the new Masonic Club off Holly Road, Tickets priced at £75. This promises to be a great night, a four course dinner, bucks fizz reception and bubble at midnight. There will of course be the traditional raffle plus other entertainment. We wish Cllr Robert Everett (new Mayor) the very best for his year in office.

Christ Church Moreton Hall
Well this has been quite a summer, what with the weather, good and bad, and of course the news. On the one hand there has been the joys and sorrows of Wimbledon; the World Cup, the Commonwealth and European games for both able and disabled participants, and on the other, the sad news of so many countries plunging themselves into civil war by terrorist aggression. Closer to home, there was the sudden resignation of our well respected MP David Ruffley. This meant Bury St. Edmunds was making national headlines too. It would seem you just can’t get away from the wickedness in the world and there is very little we can do about it. No matter what we are doing right now; like coming back from holidays or getting ready for a new term, we cannot but think: “What is going to happen in the end?” That was the question the disciples once asked Jesus. His answer recorded in Matthew and Mark’s Gospels is very detailed, but in summary he says: “7 When you hear of wars and rumours of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. 8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines.....But the one who endures to the end will be saved.... my words will never pass away...I say to everyone watch!” Sometimes we can become so worried by things especially things that may affect us but
32
The Moreton Hall Directory
we can do little to change or stop, that we feel like giving up. How can we not be alarmed how can we endure to the end? It is at times I remember two things. First is the Para Olympian who dares to have a go. It doesn’t matter where they finish - at least they took part. Such people humble me when I feel down, if they can keep going, so should I. The second is this little poem from Keith Green: “Do your best. Pray that it’s blest. And Jesus takes care of the rest.” So in our case on More ton Hall while we can’t stop things that are happening in the Middle East we can raise money for the refugees. We are holding a special collection with Christian Aid this Sunday which we will keep open to the end of September. Please do support this by coming to church or putting an envelope through our letter box. We can certainly all pray. What people forget, as we
begin to remember the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War One, was that the churches were open for prayer all through the war. The horrors we face now are as nothing to the troubles they faced then and yet God brought them through it all. Finally keep your eyes open, so you can see Jesus Christ’s blessing in your life. Hardly a day goes by when I do not have something to give thanks for. If you keep watching, praying and doing your best, you will see them too. Bless God Revd. Canon Jonathan Ford. A quiet month and this MHD article is due before our next committee meeting which leaves me with a lack of information for comment. Then I met a lady in high dudgeon who had been bullied off the pathway in Bedingfeld Road by two “gentlemen” riding abreast and demanding to know just how much walking space she needed, not nice. Now when I was a lad there were no cycle paths and the Highway Code ruled, after a little research online I found that this was still true and backed up by Local Councils and Sustrans (Sustain Transport charity). Elements of the Highway Code now apply on cycle paths: Segregated Paths – for cyclists the rule of keep to the left apply and they are not allowed to cross into the pedestrian pathway. And pedestrians are not to use cycleway. Non Segregated Paths – Both pedestrians and cyclists keep to the left and overtake when oncoming “traffic” permits.

Roads – Cyclists can choose to use Roads or cycle paths and are even permitted to cycle two abreast but not to impede following traffic. I do hope I’ve got that all right. Importantly all of the agencies concerned emphasise that common sense and courtesy are needed. Have a peek at www. sustrans.org.uk they have an excellent map of the cycle paths covering the UK. We have very good, well marked and sign posted cycle paths around Moreton Hall and it is good to see so many people using them. For the Diary: MHRA AGM 12th November 7.00pm in the Community Centre. Watt are you on?
by Andrew Southwood
To most of my friends and family the only surprising thing is that it has taken until now for me to join the solar panel revolution. Yes, our roof is now proudly sporting a sleek black second skin, in the form of a shiny new array of photovoltaic cells.
46
For me there are two very good reasons I got involved in this. Firstly, it’s a money thing (isn’t it always?). With energy costs only going one way and interest rates effectively decreasing the value of any savings in the bank, it was time to think about innovative ways to make my modest but hard earned savings work for me. Some research and number crunching showed that, short of gambling in wildly volatile markets, I could not get close to the long term financial returns a pv system would offer me, with any other investment.
generate a large proportion of the energy my family consume at home, and that is kind of nice in a geekyeco way.
Secondly, it’s the green angle. Yes, love it or hate it, renewable energy generation is the only viable option for the future. It may only be on a small scale, but I am proud to say that I now
To most people this might mean simply using the washing machine and dishwasher in the daytime rather than at night, but, as my wife will testify, I am not most people. I admit that I have become a tiny
The Moreton Hall Directory
However, all this comes with a slight catch. For those of you who are not familiar with how solar pv works, its pretty simple. Essentially you create electricity when the sun is shining (obvious perhaps?) and draw electricity off the grid when the sun is not shining. So… the golden rule is to try and adjust your energy demand over times when the sun is out, so you use the electricity you have generated.
bit obsessed with the household energy usage, and the small but all knowing real-time energy generation/usage monitor is my master. On an ‘average’ day I may not have enough solar energy to operate several high wattage appliances simultaneously, so I try to stagger their use, making sure I use as much of my own (free) power, and as little of the grids (expensive) power, as possible. You still with me? I am not sure my house rules about only putting the kettle on when the sun is shining, and comparing the current solar generation with the appliance wattage before using it, are as popular with the other members of the household as I hoped. No one ever said saving the planet (and a few quid) would be easy!

Gardening Tips by Paul Clarke 54
The Moreton Hall Directory
Welcome to Gardening Tips a monthly feature providing you with hints and ideas of what to do each month in your garden. Along with a list of jobs that will enable you to enjoy and maintain your garden I will also feature a plant of the month. I have been a gardener for many years and run a small business called Pauls Garden Services.
r be em pt Se in en rd ga ur yo in do to t Wha and available for gardening gs there is less time great a is ber tem Sep With the shorter evenin e. don off in the work to be yet there is little falling vegetables. Pauls Jobs for the Month Fruit l If you are lucky enough to have one or two Apple trees then a sure sign that they are ripe is when you start to see windfall apples around the tree. The question then is what to do with all of your fruit. Only store fruit that is pristine condition. One year I made cider with a lot of apples but another option with a glut of apples is to turn it into a puree for use over the winter.
Flower Garden l The middle of September is the very latest date for planting Christmas hyacinth bulbs so that they are in flower for the 25th December l Look out for opportunities to collect seeds from your perennials l Cut back plants overhanging pavements or boundaries l Prune your climbing roses this month l Continue to deadhead and water your plants l Most perennials benefit from division every two to three years to maintain health and vigour this is a good month to do this.
Vegetable Garden l Lift and harvest your late potatoes and onions l Keep the hoe going to prevent weeds getting the upper hand l Keep those green tomatoes on the plants until there is a noticeable cooling in the weather then bring them indoors to ripen l Lift marrows, pumpkins and squashes off the ground with straw or upturned plastic flower pots, in order to keep them clean and reduce slug damage.

THE
OF
MON TH – Sedum
Sedums come into their own around September with their fleshy foilage and starry flowers. Tall varieties command attention in the perennial border with their dense foliage and large flower heads of red, pink, gold, yellow, and white. They are low maintenance plants which are good for cut flowers, attract butterflies. Apply a 2-inch layer of mulch to retain moisture and control weeds in the Spring. After the first frost, cut stems back to an inch or two above the soil . Divide plants every 3 to 4 years as new growth begins in the spring, lifting plants and dividing them into clumps.
General Maintenance l Scarify and spike the lawn and apply an autumn lawn feed l If you are thinking of creating a new lawn early September is good for sowing lawn seed though delay turfing a new lawn until the end of the month or October. l If you have bald patches in your lawn scuff up the soil with a fork and apply grass seed and keep watering
“By all these lovely tokens September days are here, With summer’s best of weather And autumn’s best of cheer.” - Helen Hunt Jackson
l The last hedge clip of the year can take place this month to keep them neat and tidy and control their size l Top up bird baths regularly
Free Roses Roses can be expensive to buy new in the garden centres so why not take cuttings and propagate your own for free. Here’s how:-
Doing The Jobs You Don’t Have Time For?
l Choose long healthy stems of the current season’s growth not old wood l Make the cuttings 25cm or 10 inches long, cutting above a bud at the top to remove the shoot tip and below one at the base l Leave one leaf at the top and remove all the lower leaves l Dip the base of the cutting into rooting hormone powder and insert several cuttings into a large pot of gritty compost l Water well, place the pot in a shaded spot and leave until cuttings have rooted l Pot up rose plants individually when well rooted, though this will be next summer!

IF I STAY
Starring Chloe Grace Moretz, Jamie Blackley, Mireille Enos, Joshua Leonard Chloe Grace Moretz stars in a deeply moving romantic drama about a teenage girl whose life changes in an instant. Mia Hall (Chloe Grace Moretz) is a gifted cellist who has the opportunity to study at Juilliard. Her rock’n’roll-loving parents Kat (Mireille Enos) and Denny (Joshua Leonard) are baffled by their daughter’s enthusiasm for classical music, but fully supportive of her ambitions. She has also fallen in love with the handsome and adoring Adam (Jamie Blackley), who plays in a local band. But when a family drive ends in tragedy, Mia finds her life hanging in the balance. Trapped in limbo while her body lies in a hospital bed, she faces an agonising decision. Is love strong enough to bring her back, or should she allow herself to slip away? ‘Kick-Ass’ star Chloe Grace Moretz contributes a heart-breaking performance to this inspirational adaptation of Gayle Forman’s young adult bestseller.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: Oscorp.

The moreton hall community centre news Hi and welcome to the September edition of the Moreton Hall Directory! We at the centre have been busy getting together our Christmas Party Nights for you to enjoy! We’ve got 4 nights planned this year on the 12th/13th December, and then the following week on the 19th/20th December. The first weekend of the 12th/13th December we’re putting on a buffet/ disco night, complete with table decorations and an arrival drink, for the rather tempting price of £14.95 per head! And then the following weekend of the 19th/20th we are doing a 3 course sit down meal, complete with live band, arrival drinks, and festive tables laden with decorations. All this for the price of £29.95 per head! If you’d like to enquire, phone Clare on 01284 763402. The football season has started, and this of course means that we’re showing all the big matches on Sky Sports and BT Sport, live on the big screen! On September 6th we have a 60s 70s night featuring live band Retrio! Free entry to get in of course and it starts at 8pm in the clubroom. West Suffolk Hospital are holding a garden party at the community centre on Sunday 7th September, starting at 1pm and finishing at 6pm. They’re raising funds for the Neo Natal Unit at the hospital, which as anyone who has had to use the unit can say it’s a brilliant cause and well worth raising money for. They’ve got lots on, including the Spring Community Choir performing, and the dulcet tones of “Sounds Saxy”! They also have a dog show at 2pm, and a falconry display later on, as well as stalls and a BBQ. It’s £2 entry, with under 16s going free! On 13th September in the clubroom, one of our members Jimmy Nicholls has kindly prepared a quiz for all to participate in! It’s an eclectic mix of questions, featuring music, film, a bit of Bury St Edmunds History and much more! Starts at 8pm, £1 to enter with cash prizes to be won! We’ve got darts tournaments coming up – on 20th September, 18th October, 29th November and 27th December! All of the tournaments are £5 to register, with all of the money going towards the cash prizes up for grabs for the best player of the
night. Registration starts at 7pm on each night! We will also have live music playing in the hall featuring Jukebox Fury on Saturday 11th October. Jukebox Fury are a brilliant local band – check out their Facebook page and then check out their set at the Moreton Hall! There’s no ticket price for this event, but we will set up a donation stand if you’d like to make a suggested donation of £2 for entry; ticket proceeds will go towards raising money for Clic Sargent, a charity dedicated to helping young people and their families dealing with cancer. If you want an adaptable and competitively priced venue for your special event, come and see what we have to offer and give Kerrie a ring in the office on 01284 763402. We have had a myriad of events at the centre, including a Burns Night, weddings, occasion lunches, birthday parties, fundraising nights, themed nights, Christmas Party nights and more - we’d be happy to discuss with you exactly what we can do to make your event unforgettable (and as stress free as we can manage!) We’re taking bookings for 2015 and beyond, and developing our events offer at the club for the years ahead of us. With years of experience behind us at delivering brilliant events, we have the knowledge, contacts and facilities to help in any way that we can. Looking forward in the clubroom, look out for details on our events that include the Kid’s Christmas Party, live music nights, our Halloween disco, New Years Eve of course and lots of bingo, darts tournaments and kid’s events guaranteed to keep you all entertained. If you’d like to join our mailing list to keep informed, please give us an email at moretonhallclub@aol.com, check out our facebook group, or visit our website at www. moretonhallcommunitycentre.co.uk! See you all soon!
