Yes it is Easter time and now we can finally say it’s officially Spring!!! I love Springtime. Lighter nights, warmer days and that nice feeling of waking up to the sun shining and birds singing! Okay, I sound like Mary Poppins now, but hey, the brighter weather makes everyone feel happier! An update from Town Councillor Ann Williamson: Bury St Edmunds Town Council has purchased two speed indicator devices (SID) and one was recently placed in a Mayfield Road. Whilst most drivers were under the 30mph limit, those who did speed averaged 33mph. These devices are shared amongst the Town Council wards and will be back in Mayfield Road at some stage. We are looking at other locations within the ward to place a SID. Southgate Community Centre has been undergoing some refurbishment work during the past few months and is looking wonderful, with a new coffee bar and sliding doors to separate the halls, funded by a grant from the Town Council. The old grey vinyl flooring in the main hall has been replaced to match that of the small hall, this was funded by Sarah from her locality budget. If you’re passing, pop in and have a look - it’s your community centre. Although the residents association has folded there is still a Facebook page - Residents of Southgate Ward - which keeps you up to date with things that are happening in your area. 10 | APRIL 2018
Help make Suffolk the Greenest County – Join the Spring Clean Local communities are being encouraged to clean up towns, villages and countryside by getting involved in a litter pick this spring. Around 200 litter pick groups and events were registered last year in Suffolk, involving over 4000 volunteers. Already this year, over 1700 volunteers have either carried out a litter pick or have one planned, giving their neighbourhoods a well-deserved spruce up.

A range of volunteers get involved in litter picking, from schools, businesses, youth clubs, churches and other community organisations. You don’t have to be part of a group though, many people pick litter whilst out walking, which the Suffolk Waste Partnership encourages as well.
• Work with businesses such as drivethroughs, service stations, garages and logistics firms to seek their support in promoting responsible attitudes to litter disposal.

Recently, people in Bury St Edmunds have been highlighting the amount of litter along the A14. Suffolk Waste Partnership’s member authorities are responsible for clearing litter from public land and
The Suffolk Waste Partnership’s project will:
• Trial new style litter bins at key lay-by locations and improve labelling and signage of litter bins along the A11, A12 and A14 in Suffolk. • Trial new remote monitoring technology to help councils coordinate litter bin emptying more efficiently and effectively. • Ensure that any person taken to court and convicted for a littering offence anywhere in Suffolk is named and shamed publicly. • Run an awareness campaign to remind residents and visitors alike about the issues and the consequences of littering. • Educate residents and businesses about how to prevent their waste inadvertently escaping their control and ending up as litter. Dear reader,
This month we want to say the BIGGEST thank you to one of our constant supporters. The Greyhound Ixworth have been supporting us for the past four years and this year they have really outdone themselves by raising a staggering ÂŁ4,515! The money has been raised from quiz nights, a 100 mile bike ride, a charity golf day, Monday Night Crib League and from a few generous donors. The money will be used to purchase some special recliner chairs on our ward F14. This will mean the family members of our patients will be able to have somewhere to sleep if they do not wish to leave their loved ones side, as well as more comfortable seating for our patients should they want to get out of bed. Their previous years of fundraising have enabled us to purchase some specialist cots for our caesarean section mums, equipment for our physio department and equipment to aid in breast radiotherapy. We cannot thank Colin, Susan, Ray, Glynis and everyone who has supported them on their quest to support us, enough! You are true charity superstars and we cannot wait to work with you again this year! This month also saw the Haverhill Running Festival take place and it was the biggest one to date with over 360 runners taking part. Sponsored by A-Plan Insurance the Running Festival saw the runners competing across distances including 10k, half marathon, full marathon and a

fun run from Haverhill Leisure Centre. This is the fifth year the event has taken place but the first for supporting My WiSH Charity, which we are just thrilled about! Despite the odd shower, the day saw everybody having great fun and three new course records were even set. One by Nicki Davis in the HavaHalf, completing the 13.1 miles in 1:32:35 and by both sexes in the HaverMara, with Alasdair MacBean completing the 26.2 mile course in 3:11:24, and Sharon Frost the first woman home in 3:38:22. W hat’s been happening at...
HARDWICK Primary School ThSo much has been happening at School, it has been quite an eventful month especially for the first time for over a decade the school was closed due to adverse weather conditions. Following the heavy snow, the school managed to open for one day out of the three affected and as you can see children thoroughly enjoyed the winter conditions. Thanks must to go parents and carers for their understanding and efforts, and to the majority of staff that made it to school some taking well over an hour to get in! At last we can celebrate the completion of work on our new Multi Use Games Area (MUGA), children have enjoyed using it for a variety of sports and with a muddy playing field it came into its own when we held our Sport Relief Day. Staff, parents and pupils from every class completed laps over 20 minutes and in total ran a combined distance of 366 miles so very well done. There has been more success with excellent effort from some of our pupils. The Hardwick Singing Club reached the final of the Great EACH Choir Off with Mr Rampley and Miss Brill, an amazing and well-deserved achievement. Our Year 1 & 2 gymnasts
came 1st in the Key Steps Gymnastic Competition, and a week later the Year 5 & 6 team were placed 2nd and Year 3 and 4 teams came 1st and 3rd, an excellent result across the year groups. Also we are proud of our Year 5 and 6 children that represented the school at the local schools swimming gala. Year 5 have been very busy, attending the King Edward VI School Science Festival, and visiting the Sybil Andrews Academy for Art and DT as well as Dance and Drama events. This month as always is busy with Easter events, the Lower KS2 Spring Production and a Year 4 Maths Roadshow as well as other sporting competitions. Finally, there have been strange goings on in the Reception area of school; children arrived in the morning to discovered a very large egg in the sandpit which subsequently hatched and left a trail of dinosaur-like footprints! Sybil Andrews Academy appoints new interim headteacher A previous winner of a national teacher of the year award has been appointed as the new interim headteacher at Sybil Andrews Academy. Trenica King has spoken of her excitement at starting at the Bury St Edmunds school after Easter while the recruitment process for a new permanent headteacher gets underway. She said: “Having met the governors and staff, what struck me instantly is the ambition everyone has for the school to be the best it can be. “I want to assist as much as possible with that and I am very excited to lead the school for the summer term.” Governors at the school and the Samuel Ward Academy Trust, which the school is a member of, said they were delighted to secure someone of Trenica’s experience and drive. Paul Rayner, chair of governors at the school, said: “Trenica has visited the school and, like everyone who visits, was delighted by what she saw. “We look forward to welcoming her to the school and I know she is looking forward to meeting our students and their parents.”
Tim Coulson, Chief Executive of the Samuel Ward Academy Trust, added: “We are fortunate to have secured the services of such an experienced and delightful headteacher for Sybil Andrews Academy. “Trenica will support the leadership team and staff as they plan to grow even further than the numbers first envisaged for the school, such has become its popularity in the town.” Trenica has had 10 years of senior leadership experience in secondary schools, including three years as headteacher at New Rickstones Academy in Witham and, this term, as the interim headteacher at a school in Romford that the Trust has been supporting. The Trust and governors have also started the recruitment process for a permanent headteacher from September after Andy Prestoe stepped down at half-term. Tim added: “We would like to thank the school’s vice-principals, James Mason and Shaun Douglas, who, as expected, have stepped up extremely well since half-term.” APRIL 2018 | 17

The Perfect home for your Feathered Friends
A
s the winter blues slowly fade away, we can expect to see more birds in our gardens. Garden birds come in all shapes and sizes, but so do bird nest boxes. As more different shaped and coloured bird boxes come into shops, more of us are buying them. However, the RSPB warns that these particular bird boxes aren’t necessarily safe or effective for nesting birds. So, when shopping for bird nest boxes, keep the following things in mind: 1. Insulation- is the box made from insulating materials such as wood, or a waterproof material? 2. Thickness- is the box at least 15mm thick? 3. Hole size- is the hole suitable for small garden birds, such as finches and tits? If it’s just blue tits you want, ensure the hole is 26mm wide. 4. Material- is the box material strong and durable? Ensure the inhabitants won’t be bothered when it’s raining.
5. Depth- is the box the perfect depth, not too shallow but not too deep? 6. Area- is the box big enough to hold lots of eggs? The inside floor area should be at least 130 square cm. Also, avoid the following factors when choosing: 1. Metal and ceramic materials, as they can make the interior too hot or too cold 2. Perches as they can support hungry squirrels or weasels 3. Brightly coloured boxes- the more camouflaged a box is, the better If a bird nesting box ticks all these boxes, then it’s just about perfect. Just remember to place the box between 1m and 5m above the ground, and you’re done. Now you can sit back and relax. Keep an eye out for activity within the box, such as if you notice a bird keep visiting it. This could mean you have nesting birds! Look out for chicks! by Aimee Hartley

As we were getting ready for our March meeting we could see samples of wood carvings on the table. These were the creative work of our speaker for the evening, John Williams. He uses his vivid imagination and skill to make use of different kinds of free wood into works of art. He is also a fine arts photographer. The most wellknown piece locally is a plane tree stump carving featuring Monk Jocelin on one side and his horse on the other side. He plans his carvings using detailed drawings and only uses sharp chisels and files. Another example is an 18ft tree depicting game animal carvings. He also has special carvings in the Abbey Gardens commemorating physicians, masons, scribes and herbalists from the past. As a National Trust worker, he is also involved in carving 4 trees showing the history of Ickworth House. We enjoyed the stories and pictures of this talented man’s work. Moreton Hall WI meets the first Wednesday of the month at the Community Centre. The first visit is free.

Here’s how to escape pollen pain Hay fever — also known as seasonal allergic rhinitis — typically starts around now, although for some people it can occur at any time of year depending on their sensitivity to certain pollens, grasses and fungal spores. About 10 million people in Britain are believed to suffer from it to some degree but the exact figure remains unclear due to people self-treating or not reporting their symptoms, with most developing hay fever before the age of 20. Common causes of hay fever include grass pollen, tree pollen, moulds and fungi. The time of year can affect when symptoms are at their worst, with spring and summer being the seasonal peaks. Most doctors diagnose hay fever from the history and symptoms alone. Most people do not need to have special tests but occasionally a doctor may advise you to have a skin-prick allergy test to help determine if you’re allergic to specific substances. There are many ways of reducing hay fever symptoms apart from taking medication and these include:
• Staying indoors on days when the pollen count is high. • Keeping doors and windows closed when the pollen count is high. • Staying away from areas where there’s more pollen such as grassy parks. • Not mowing the grass. • Wearing wrap-around sunglasses to keep pollen out of your eyes. • Taking a shower and washing your hair after going outside when the pollen count is high. • Removing house and garden plants that trigger your hay fever. • Not drying washing outside if the pollen count is high — pollen may get trapped in the fibres of clothes and bed linen. • Putting Vaseline on the inside of your nostrils to prevent pollen from entering your nasal passages. Other ways to help include avoiding cigarette smoke, cleaning your house regularly to keep dust and mould counts low – wear a mask, dust with a clean, damp cloth and vacuum instead of sweeping — removing items that easily trap dust, such as stuffed animals, dried flowers and curtains, and considering using low-allergy bedding products. There are a range of treatments available for hay fever — get advice from your pharmacist or doctor before starting any medication. Antihistamines are the main treatment for hay fever and can quickly help reduce symptoms of sneezing and a runny nose. A steroid nasal spray can be helpful in reducing or preventing the inflammation in the nose that occurs in hay fever. If you suffer from itchy or sore eyes, eye drops that contain antihistamines or sodium cromoglicate can help. Fortunately, for about 20 per cent of sufferers, hay fever spontaneously resolves itself over time. But spare a thought for those at this time of year who open their curtains to a lovely sunny day and groan at the thought rather than smile. APRIL 2018 | 21

LYMPHOEDEMA AWARENESS DAY – A FANTASTIC EVENT! LSS celebrated a successful Lymphoedema Awareness Day on the 19th March. Advice and information was also available from organisations including Macmillan Cancer Support, OneLife Suffolk, The Chronic Pain Support Group and BSN Medical. The event saw the joint launch of the full Lymphoedema Service by the West Suffolk Alliance Lymphoedema Service and LSS, with clinical staff on hand to give out information, advice and support.
A big thanks to the LSS Sub Committee, pictured above along with Di Cheevers, WSALS Clinical Lead, and Stefan Currington, for all their magnificent work in putting on the successful 2018 Lymphoedema Awareness Day. A magnificent £101 was raised and all proceeds going towards LLS’s fundraising for clinical equipment for WSALS for the benefit of patients. The 19th hole -
As always welcome back to the 19th hole, now that we can officially say its British summer time lets get this golf season started.
This month is best month in the calendar as it features the best competition (in my opinion) of the year… THE MASTERS. There is no other week that I want to watch every single minute of coverage I can, from the players on the range, the Par 3 contest and then the main event. All of this being played on an almost perfect golf course in Augusta National. Last year gave us a very exciting finish that included two of Europe’s best players in the shape of Sergio Garcia and Justin Rose with Garcia claiming his first major and the all important green jacket. We would like the same action packaged tournament again this year as well, but the all important question is… Who will win this year? ….and the winner is?? The field for The Masters is a who’s who of professional golf so picking a winner is so hard. That been said here are a few players that are in form and might be worth watching throughout the tournament. Justin Thomas Looking at what he has achieved in the last past 16 months since The Masters you can’t help but look here for the winner. It looks like it’s just a matter of time before gets to world number one but will he pick up green jacket number one at the same time? Tiger Woods Everyone questioned if Tiger could still play like he did before, with a runner up finish at the Valspar Championship and another top 10 at The Arnold Palmer Invitational he answered those questions. Will Tiger have enough game for green jacket number 5 only time will tell. Paul Casey After an impressive win at the
Valspar Championship Casey is in great form heading towards The Masters. He has turned into one of the most consistent players in the world, and his track record at Augusta is very good with a T-6/T-4/solo sixth run the past three years. These are three picks of mine but anyone can win this great tournament, as always it will be a magical week of golf. Coaches Corner – WATCH THE BEST!! Continuing on The Masters theme, I want to draw your attention to the coverage and how the players go about playing this amazing Augusta National golf course. Course management is so key around Augusta, pay attention to player/caddy conversations and the numbers they talk about when planning out shots. Where they looking to land shots to to either make an approach shot easier or to allow the players to have an easier putt. Yes, I know what you are all thinking, they are the best players in the world and they can hit these shots on demand most of the time so its easier for them to make these plans. You are correct in a way…. HOWEVER, if you stand over a shot with a clear plan of what you want to do from tee to green this will allow you have make a fully committed swings each time you address the ball. Watch and learn from the best in the world!! If you have any areas of your game which you would like to improve then get in contact, I would be pleased to assist you in enjoying this game more. Being in touch with nature nourishes the soul and the sound of birdsong can help boost mental health. Walking with awareness and focusing on the feel of your movements, being aware of sensations and choosing not to engage with any thoughts that arise; gives you freedom, space and reduces anxiety; allowing you to appreciate what you encounter step by step. Spring is not all about nature, new life or the home. Health can sometimes need a little helping hand after the negativity, social imbalance and feeling of disconnection during the winter months. Loneliness also can be bad for health. Thinking kindly of ourselves and others and having good hearted friends with a little compassion can boost mental and physical health. Over the years it has become abundantly clear how bringing likeminded people together and meeting on a regular basis can create belonging and how close knit relationships can develop. You begin to notice the little things that slowly grow and become established into a pattern over time. You also become to realise how heart-warming being amongst these people really is.
• Respecting the strength of each other • Sharing a smile and a laugh together • Being accepted as you are • Concern about the wellbeing of others • Know we all understand the problems we have • Offering warmth and comfort • Being there for each other/giving support • Keeping in touch during the bad times • Promise of regular get togethers • There is no need to put on a brave face if you don’t feel like it Giving them hope and something to hold on to is important and building a strong bond and deep connection is of real value. No matter what shape or size you are coming together can be a real pleasure and can build into a meaningful relationship. It is what you get out of it that matters as when you become long term ill you certainly know who your real friends are. At this month’s meeting on 19th April we are having a presentation on dance for people in pain.

Tuesday 10am at the Moreton hall health club: This is a HIIT style session which uses a mixture of functional training and body weight exercises to achieve maximum calorie burn. Plenty of jumping, sprinting and resistance work involved in this session, perfect for burning off an indulgent weekend.
Wednesday 9:15am at Great Barton Free Church: This is a circuit training based session targeting all main muscle groups using a combination of strength and aerobic exercises. Each activity is time based so perfect for all abilities.
Friday 11am at the Moreton hall health club: This is a strength based session. In this class we focus on large muscle group exercises such as: Leg press/squat/ lunge/pull up/bench press etc. A great way to tone the whole body. Sessions are available to all abilities, focusing on time duration, it doesn’t matter what level you’re at, I just ask you to work as hard as you can. Cheesy Stuffed Mushro Make this speedy, cheesy veggie treat for a light supper, or starter. It only needs five ingredients and you can have it on the table in 15 minutes
Ingredients: 4 large Portobello mushrooms 3 tbsp ricotta 30g parmesan or vegetarian alternative, grated 30g grated mozzarella or cheddar 1 tbsp tarragon leaves (optional) rocket salad, to serve
Method: Heat the grill to high. Remove the central stalks of the mushrooms, season and place on a baking tray. Mix the cheeses and tarragon together and season. Spoon the cheese mixture onto the mushrooms and grill for 8-10 mins, or until bubbling and oozy. Remove from the tray with a spatula, season and serve with a rocket salad.

Chef’s Challenge!

With more and more people opting to be vegetarian and vegan - there are some wonderful opportunities, as a chef, to get creative. Producing a meat dish and simply removing the meat - I am told this happens all too often, is not very resourceful! Far better, in my view, to create an interesting, tasty and nutritionally balanced meal for a vegan, add cheese or eggs for a vegetarian. Most of my vegan dishes make superb accompaniments to other mains including a standard roast. It is important to me that, as an omnivore, all my dishes taste great. As a result, many a confirmed carnivore has enjoyed our vegan dishes. Check out our root vegetables roasted with rose harissa and marmalade, sweet potato fries with homemade garlic mayo or tahini and zat’aar - or stuffed portobello mushrooms topped with grilled vegan cheese. The greater challenge is pudding - fruit is nice and healthy, but its not pudding! With this in mind I set about in the test kitchen and have come up with a couple of recipes that got thumbs up. The added bonus here is that they are gluten free and dairy free too.
Vegan ‘Cheese’cake Base 200g pitted dates 120g raw walnuts Filling 180g raw, unsalted cashew nuts (soak these in boiling water for at least 15 minutes) 80g Coconut oil (melted) 150ml Coconut milk (full fat) 120ml Maple syrup or agave Pinch salt 50ml lemon juice
In a food processor or smoothie maker - blitz the dates and walnuts. Pack these into muffin tins - silicone ones are the best. Rinse out the food processor and blitz the remaining ingredients pour on top of the base. I froze them to aid pushing them out of the silicone.

Peanut Butter Cheesecake This irresistible cheesecake is the perfect indulgence for peanut butter fans! Ingredients:

For the base 50g butter 175g pack peanut cookies For the filling 5 gelatine leaves 500g tub ricotta 175g smooth peanut butter 175g golden syrup 150ml milk To decorate 270ml pot double cream 2 tbsp soft brown sugar 1 bar peanut brittle, crushed
Oil and line a 20cm round loose- bottomed cake tin with cling film, making it as smooth as possible. Melt the butter in a pan. Crush the biscuits by bashing them in a bag with a rolling pin, then stir them into the butter until very well coated. Press the mixture firmly into the base of the tin and chill.

Soak the gelatine in water while you make the filling. Tip the ricotta into a bowl, then beat in the peanut butter and syrup. Ricotta has a slightly grainy texture so blitz until smooth with a stick blender for a smoother texture if you prefer. Take the soaked gelatine from the water and squeeze dry. Put it into a pan with the milk and heat very gently until the gelatine dissolves. Beat into the peanut mixture, then tip onto the biscuit base. Chill until set. To serve, carefully remove from the tin. Whisk the cream with the sugar until it holds its shape, then spread on top of the cheesecake and scatter with the peanut brittle.

That pie was good! BY ANDREW SOUTHWOOD In my 40 years as an Ipswich fan I’ve been to some terrible football matches. Not just bad games, but mind numbingly turgid affairs. I’ve always put the late 1980’s as my darkest days at Portman Road. However, I do believe those lows have now officially been surpassed. The current state of the club can probably be best explained through my recent matchday experience. Despite witnessing a woeful performance at the weekend, I was in an unusually buoyant mood as we stepped off the coach for the Tuesday night game. With a bit of time to spare we decided to venture into the ‘Fans Zone’. Yes, we were the basically the only people there, but we remained optimistic and decided a quick trip to the loo was required before we had a drink. Here was the first problem. No toilets. You had to exit the Fan Zone (the long way round, obviously) to use the loos, and then you couldn’t get back in again. 42 | APRIL 2018
Nevermind, we’ll get a pie and a pint in the stand. But wait, the tantalisingly named ‘Real Ale Bar’ was shut. Ok, so we’ll just have a basic pint. “Sorry, no cards…” says the bar staff to my mate. Fear not, for I have some hard cash. Oh, but wait, the beer has run out (remembering we were struggling to actually see any other customers at this point). Right, we were getting frustrated now. Still, looking for the positives, the pie was good. We head up into the deserted stand to find our unofficial seats. I mean, that’s the advantage of the ground being so empty. We took our chances and sat in the posh padded seats on the halfway line, normally an eye watering £45 a match I believe. As the appalling spectacle, that was the match, unfolded before us, we were distracted by the filthy state of the stands and the mud bath of a pitch. A toxic atmosphere from the tiny home crowd, ironically cheered passes
completed and long balls to no one. At one point we tried to get a Mexican wave going, but with swathes of empty seats it never got beyond the 2 of us. Worth a try. As the 3rd goal was conceded at the start of the second half many people headed for the exits. We had a coach that (much like Mick McCarthy) wouldn’t be leaving until the bitter end, so we had little choice but to sit it out. The minutes passed and I silently contemplated some of the magnificent moments I’d experienced in that ground; pitch invasions in celebration of promotion in 1992, colossal FA cup ties, thrilling Premier League football… If I was laughing at the final whistle it was only to stop myself from crying at the catastrophic demise of a once highly respected club, my club. How dare ‘they’ do this? Yet, as we boarded the coach for the arduous homewood journey all I could think to say was, “That pie was good…”.

Baking!
Anyone who knows me knows that I love/ have a passion for baking! Recently I was really fortunate that my parents bought me a mixer in the Palmers sale! Which seeing it on the side has made me want to bake even more! It is a cream Morphy Richards one, it is so nice!! So this months article is going to be about some of my recent creations! For Mother’s Day, rather than jut buying flowers I thought I’d make some in edible form! For Christmas I got some creative flower piping nozzles, which worked a treat! I had to make the buttercream quite differently to how I would usually do it, as it needed to be thicker so they wouldn’t flop! So instead of margarine I used Trex and meringue powder. I was very pleased with how they came out (and so was my nan)! I did them in different colours so that they looked like a bunch of spring flowers! This was a personal choice but I used different nozzels to make a variety of flowers, no two flowers looked the same!
I was really lucky that my nan picked me up a magazine that had just come out about baking. It came with two different size butterfly cookie cutters, three piping bags, and a magazine about things you could bake and amazing ideas! I chose to use the smallest cookie cutter to make butterflies from royal icing to place on top of some pipped buttercream buns. I chose to make them in red and white as I took them in to school to sell for Sport Relief. I also chose to make some sheep buns to sell as it’s spring time! I’ve made these before, they are very simple but effective! I simply put some green icing on top of the buns and put white mini marshmallows on top of that to look like the sheeps body. I also made the sheep heads out of black and white royal icing, it was like playing with play dough! I’ve already decided that I’m going to make little pink piggies in a similar style to the sheep next, and will also use my big butterfly cutter to make some cookies! Rougham Control Tower Aviation Museum April Is Here!!! Hopefully you are reading this on our first day (or our second – as we are open on the bank holiday Monday). If not please come and join us on any Sunday for this season. Our first Open Day of 2018 is Sunday April 1st. How quickly has this day come around? Time Flies! The successes of last year – new road access, internal improvements, increase in visitor numbers – have helped in our focus for this year. YOUTH. Our main project, during the winter months, has been the installation of central heating in the Radar Room. Wow, what a difference! Thank you to the team – Graham, Wendy and others for the hard work that has made this happen. Apart from enjoying tea, coffee and cake in a warm building, public meetings (on the last Tuesday of the month), committee meetings and the evenings for the Radio Club and Paranormal visitors will offer very comfortable facilities. In the 1942 to 1945 period at Rougham the majority of pilots and aircrew were very young. Many completed their tour in Europe before they had celebrated their 21st birthday, if they were lucky enough to survive the allotted 30 sorties. I am aware that the ‘war situation’ required many large numbers of service personnel but so many of them volunteered in their teens. Our young people committed their lives to their King and Country - National service and so many were under 21! This was the same in the USA where 16 and 17 year olds (and younger) wanted to see ‘action’. Over 330,000 allied military personnel arrived into East Anglia, with some 3,500 to 4,000 here at Rougham. The 8th USAAF assistance, involving airfields such as Great Ashfield, Parham, Elmsett, and others, provided bombers and fighter escorts for the assault on Germany. Rougham aircraft included the 52 | APRIL 2018
mighty B-17 Flying Fortress. Four engine, 9/10 crew, weighing in excess of 32 tons (fully armed and ‘bombed-up’) and able to fly at some 30,000 ft – with temperatures on occasions well below minus 15 degrees. Our Museum stands as Bury St Edmunds main memorial for these service men and women. For those who died or were wounded, for the 1,834 who never went home and for the crew’s of 153 aircraft that where lost. AND so many of these guy’s and gals were in their teens! So this is why this year we are focusing on our youngsters. We, the current committee and M members, are beginning to get ‘a little long in the tooth’. An injection new blood is needed Y to become involved - our future custodians CM of YOUR museum. CRICKET CLUB
The cricket season is upon us and despite the large quantity of rain, snow and high winds of the winter the Victory Sports Ground is in excellent condition, the cricket squares are in as good a condition as I have ever seen in April. Bury St Edmunds Cricket Club is very keen to increase the numbers of women and girls playing the game with that in mind there is a Women’s Softball Festival on the evening of Friday May 11th this emphasis is on enjoying the game and for players to join the clubs ladies team who play on Sundays during the season. Junior cricket coaching has taken place in the sports hall during the winter and during the season matches will take place for 5 teams aged from under 9 to under 15. Junior cricket coaching will take place on every Wednesday and Friday evening during the
period April to August, the club have 7 coaches that include Murray Commins a South African professional player who will be both playing and available to coach groups and individual players. On Sunday mornings the club will running Sunday morning `All Stars Cricket` there will be 8 sessions

Here’s a really simple Easter/Spring make that looks great when lit up on a shelf. You will need a piece of plain paper, a glass tumbler or old jam jar, some sharpie pens (or glass decorating pens) a glue dot and a tea light.
• Draw an outline shape of a bunny (or heart or star) • Using a glue dot or Sellotape stick this to the INSIDE of the glass container • Using a series of tiny dots, go close to the outline of the image. Choose 2 colours (yellow and green are nice for Easter), and gradually build up the amount of dots so they are very dense. • Remove the paper from the inside to reveal the silhouette • Place a tea light inside If you wished to be able to wash the glass you MUST use glass decorating pens and heat fix the glass in oven as per their instructions.

What to do in your garden in April... I’ve often wondered how much walking I do when I am gardening. Particular when mowing a lawn or working in a large garden your steps soon mount up. We are told that to keep healthy that we should aim to walk 10000 steps a day. In keeping up with the trends I invested in a Fitbit a wristwatch type device which measures your steps. Sure enough most days whilst gardening, I easily achieve 10k steps in a day. Clearly gardening can help you to keep fit.
If you fancy a trip out this month to view some gardens then take a look at the National Garden Scheme website. For instance, the Cattishall Farmhouse at Gt Barton is open on the 15th April and the Moat House at Little Saxham is open on the 29th April.

Million Bells have been popular for some years now resembling a smaller version of the petunia. They are particular useful in hanging baskets and containers. They also have the added benefit of being available in a huge range of colours. Treat them as annuals and chuck them away after flowering. Growing million bells is easy. They prefer to be grown in moist but welldrained, organically rich soil in full sun. Keep them flowering with plant food such as Miracle Gro. Don’t let the soil dry out and keep watering.

New volunteer group invites older people to

‘Be Our Guest’! Contact the Elderly
, a national charity with over 10,000 volunteers, is launching a new social group for elderly people in the Bury St. Edmunds area this summer. Supported by a network of volunteers from the local area, the charity organises free monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups of older people, aged 75 and over, who live alone. The aim is to offer a regular and vital friendship link every month in volunteers’ homes, and the charity’s work is currently being featured on Channel 5’s ‘Do The Right Thing with Eamonn & Ruth’ . Each older person will be collected from their home by a volunteer driver and taken to a volunteer host’s home for the afternoon. The group will be warmly welcomed by a different host each month, but the drivers remain the same which means that over the months and years, acquaintances turn into friends and loneliness is replaced by companionship.
The tea parties offer a great way for intergenerational friendships to flourish – the volunteers hail from a variety of ages and backgrounds, but are coming together to try and
make a positive difference for isolated older people in the local community. Local Group Co-ordinator Marilyn Oakley is keen to offer a warm welcome to older people who would like the chance to enjoy good company and a change of scenery, but who struggle to get out by themselves. ‘It’s such a simple idea’ she says, ‘but the opportunity to have a chat and a laugh together amongst friends once a month could be a real life saver for elderly residents in our community who otherwise barely see anyone!
The group would also welcome more volunteers, especially drivers who would be willing to pick up one or two elderly guests once a month and accompany them to the tea parties, share in the fun and friendship and then return them home afterwards. ’It’s not only the elderly guests who benefit’ says Jonny Wood, Contact the Elderly’s regional development officer, ‘Loneliness can hit us at any stage in life, and volunteering for Contact the Elderly is a great way for people of all ages to make a vital difference to others whilst making new friends themselves!

Choir
Stroke survivors club to launch new Stroke survivors are being encouraged to join a new choir which is being launched with the support of St Edmundsbury Borough Council funding. The Second Chance Stroke Survivors Club was set up eight years ago to provide social and emotional support to stroke survivors in the Bury St Edmunds area. It already employs a specialist neurological physiotherapist to work with its members, helping their continuing rehabilitation and with it their confidence. The group also organises outings, sports and other activities including dance sessions all to help rebuild the confidence and independence of stroke survivors. Now the group, which is open to new members, is about to start a choir, backed with £600 of locality funding from St Edmundsbury Borough Cllr Patsy Warby. Penny Baker, organiser at the club said: “There has been a lot of scientific research into the positive effects of singing for stroke survivors. That research shows that singing helps to improve concentration, coordination, attention, personal awareness and memory. There are some stroke survivors who, due to a condition called aphasia, can no longer talk but music comes from a different part of the brain to speech. Watching someone who cannot talk but who can put across their emotions, thoughts and feelings through the power of song, is simply incredible. Many stroke survivors suffer from

anxiety and depression but singing lifts people’s spirits by releasing endorphins into the body. It also reduces feelings of loneliness and isolation by bringing people together.“ The locality funding from Cllr Warby will pay for an electric piano which will be used to accompany the choir at its singing therapy sessions at Great Barton Village Hall. It is hoped that these sessions will take place at least once a month.
Cllr Warby said: “My husband and I know a great many people who have suffered a stroke and it impacts not just on their lives but the people around them as well. This group is about helping people recognise that they have been given a second chance at life, and helping them make the most of that chance by giving them the support and rehabilitation that they need. I am only too pleased to be able to support the club with its fabulous work and I am sure that activities including the new choir will help improve the quality of life for stroke survivors in the area.”

Cluttered House, Cluttered Mind It may just be me but as summer draws to a close my behaviour changes; I stay in more and start hoarding things away like a little squirrel. As I cram another armful of stuff into the bottom of my wardrobe the little voice in my head says “I’ll sort that out when…” **add random excuses here**. At first it isn’t an issue, but after several months I feel a bit like the old lady in Julia Donaldson’s A Squash and a Squeeze. There is hardly any space left for me and my children in our home. Every cupboard is crammed with piles of old clothes, toys they have grown out of, things I might need one day, broken things waiting to be mended and quite a lot of old tut. Psychologically, this isn’t good for us. Clutter causes stress, knowing there is a pile of jobs we have to get around to causes stress, not being able to find anything because it is buried under piles of things we don’t need any more also causes stress. Basically being squashed in your home causes stress! It’s not very Zen and poor Feng Shui; clutter causes stagnant energy to collect in your home
which affects our mood and brings us down.

We need to take care of our personal environment for our mental and physical health. Meditation and yoga classes can relax our mind and body but if we go home to a cluttered, busy environment, that stress will return as soon as we enter the house. My brother is an estate agent, he tells me that many people want to move because their home is too small, when he goes to look around, it is often too full not too small. Humans have a habit of holding on to things we don’t need any more.
1. Stuff to keep
Spring is a great time to have a clear out! Instinctively we become more action orientated as the weather warms up. Use that natural sense to your own advantage and make yourself a spring cleaning plan. Get the kids involved, teach them to organise and prioritise their belongings, it’s a good life lesson and a fun thing to do together. If you are busy like me, keep it simple – choose a room to start in, sort one
2. Stuff to bin 3. Stuff to sell 4. Stuff to give away At the end of each week, and this is the important bit, take the stuff where it needs to go! Repeat for as long as necessary. Don’t, under any circumstances, put the piles back in the cupboard to dispose of later! Once you start to see the difference you will want to keep going. Don’t forget the loft and garage. WHO ARE WE? We have been around for forty plus years! Firstly some history - in the late 1960’s, Churches in the town were encouraged by the local authority to take the bold decision to work across denominational boundaries on the new housing estate known as the Nowton Neighbourhood being developed in partnership with the Greater London Council. Christian activities were started on the estate in 1970 with the establishment of a Sunday school. In 1974 the first regular morning service was held at Pentecost. Local churches helped to finance the inclusion of a Church Centre within the newly built Southgate Community Centre. By 1980, the congregation had grown to such an extent that Sunday morning services

were transferred to the main community centre hall. Southgate Church was formally established as a Local Ecumenical Partnership in 1978 with three partners – the Anglican, Baptist and United Reformed Churches. We are a single congregation with people coming from a variety of denominations and an increasing number with no previous church background at all. We aim to be a warm caring church which identifies with its community and recognises its responsibility to serve and minister to your needs. With God’s help, we will continue to try and reach out to people of all ages with His love in ways which are practical, relevant and which clearly point people towards a living relationship with Christ. The illustration shows what we thinks God’s love is all about, and what we seek to be as a Church. Do let us know if you think we have got this right. Returning to Theatre Royal with their new touring production of Hay Fever, London Acacdemy of Music and Dramatic Art grace the stage with a new adaptation of Noel Coward’s 1920s comedy. Surprises, romance and outrageous behaviour lead to four guests regretting ever accepting an invitation from the melodramatic Blisses.
Four guests have been invited to the Bliss household all believing they’d have their host to themselves. One believing he is in for a romantic tryst with an unattached beauty. Another is there to inspire an uninspired author and provide fertile ground for research. Two older lovers expecting to have their younger counterpart to themselves. For someone who’s old enough to remember the previous Tomb Raider films with Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft, I was quite intrigued to see why they were remaking it so soon (okay, it was 17 years ago, but that just makes me feel super old!) so I popped along to Cineworld to see it with my Mum and my sister.
Fun for ALL the family! I was a little sceptical about taking my older children to watch this but I am so glad I did!! This was a funny, entertaining and well acted film with realistic effects. Based loosely around the artist Beatrix Potter, the film focuses on the feud between Mr McGregor and Peter Rabbit with ‘Bea’ (Rose Byrne) and the young Mr McGregor (Domhnall Gleeson) forming a love interest. James Cordon makes an excellent Peter. There was real moments of laughter throughout from more than just my 5 year old. A definite hit for all and a great Easter holiday treat. Young and old - go and see this - you won’t regret it!

The Angelina Jolie incarnation of Lara Croft was pretty badass in a ‘girl power’ time, and actually it seems right that this film has made its return this year, but with a new Lara in the Oscar-winning form of Alicia Vikander. Her portrayal of Lara, is a bit more subtle and vulnerable than Angelina’s, but so much more current. It’s an action-packed film, that I’m fairly certain won’t win Alicia Vikander another Oscar, but at the same time, wasn’t terrible. We were entertained with it’s fast-paced story, and if you like Indiana Jones type films, you definitely wouldn’t be disappointed in this. The ending leads in nicely to a sequel, and what looks to be an even more feisty Lara Croft next time round! 7/10

SOUTHGATE Community This month we are proud to showcase the fantastic innovative refurbishment that has taken place at the Southgate Community Centre over the past two years where Trustees have actioned many initiatives to improve the fabric and environment of our wonderful facility. This would not have been possible without the support and grant funding from the Bury St Edmunds Town Council and locality funding from our hugely supportive four local councillors. We are throwing open the doors to our local community on Friday April 27th at 3.00 pm to view and tour the Centre, and at 4.00 pm invite the Mayor, Terry Clements, and Town Council Chairman, Andrew Speed, to officially unveil the new improvements and refurbishment. This is a great opportunity to see all the changes that have taken place new flooring and sanded floors, new partition doors, coffee bar, chairs and decoration throughout. See how we may support the function that you might want to hold, and also ways in which you may be able to help with the ongoing running of a highly successful asset to our community.

We are organising a day trip to London, which is open to anyone who is interested in a fun and reasonably priced day out. The coach will leave from Home Farm Lane at 9.00am and will arrive on the Embankment at about 11.30am. You will be given free time in London and, to allow you to catch a matinee performance of a show if you would like to, we’ll be leaving London at about 7.00pm. The cost will be £15 per person – much cheaper than petrol and parking or train fares!
