An Extra £21 Million to Resurface & Repair Our Roads As local Councillor, one of the things always brought to our attention is the state of our roads and pavements. To tackle this Suffolk County Council have announced new plans to invest an additional £21 million into resurfacing and repairing the county’s roads in the next three years. The plans will see 1,000 miles of roads in Suffolk resurfaced by March 2021 - a quarter of all the roads that Suffolk County Council is responsible for. This investment should improve the quality of roads, reduce the number of potholes and enhance the experience of Suffolk’s road users. It also makes sound financial sense as preventing deterioration will avoid the need to spend more money on reactive maintenance over the same period and in future years. Over 227 miles of Suffolk roads were surface dressed or machined surfaced during the summer of 2017. The funding will boost Suffolk Highways’ road maintenance and improvement spending in 2018/19 alone by 21% - £40 million in total. The £21 million will be specifically targeted at maintaining Suffolk’s existing road network. Confirming this investment now will enable Suffolk Highways to start planning and preparing this financial year to carry out the additional works across the

next three years, based on a thorough assessment of need. The extra money will be allocated to roads and infrastructure where there is the greatest need. These works will be planned carefully to make the most of the warmer summer weather when surface dressing needs to be done and conditions are the best for machine surfacing. This work will be fully coordinated to reduce the impact on road users. It’s not possible to confirm the locations of this work at this early stage. In the meantime, be sure to report any highways problems you come across at www.Suffolk.gov.uk to make sure our part of Bury St Edmunds gets the attention it deserves and is a priority for this extra funding. Reporting a pothole or pavement defect is very simple, all you need is a smart phone and internet connection. Firstly, take a photo of the defect, safely and being aware of your surroundings, and make a note of the location and problem. Then visit the website and click on “report it”, select the type of fault you are reporting, type in the problem, the location, your contact details, and upload your image. You will then be kept up to date with its progress. You can also report overhanging branches, broken signs, and all manner of other highways issues like this. MARCH 2018 | 11

LOCAL NEWS

School’s link with the arts continues with special birthday celebrations Plans to celebrate the golden jubilee of the Arts Society Bury St Edmunds have been launched through a special collaboration with a local secondary school. The Arts Society have used their milestone to team up with Sybil Andrews Academy and offer students a fantastic opportunity to learn from a Suffolk artist during a two-week residency.

always inspires me to grow as an artist and hopefully encourages the students to do the same. “We will be working on a project called ‘Our View’, which will feature interpretations of Suffolk landscapes from a young person’s perspective. “My thanks to The Arts Society and the school for being so committed to promoting the arts in education.”

Mixed media landscape artist Alfie Carpenter will work close with students from across the school to create an eye-catching mural which will be hung in the school hall and be a permanent landmark celebrating the Arts Society’s 50th anniversary.

Hannah Nield, Head of Art at Sybil Andrews, said: “We are delighted that the Arts Society Bury St Edmunds have chosen Sybil Andrews Academy to help them celebrate such a wonderful anniversary and we congratulate them on their 50 years.

Mary Payne, responsible for Young Arts coordination within The Arts Society Bury St Edmunds, said: “We are delighted to be working with the school – which was an outstanding choice given the international fame of the artist Sybil Andrews.

“It is a fantastic opportunity to have Alfie in school and this amazing project will give students a reallife opportunity to engage with artists, to learn from them and see what it really takes to be an artist.

“Encouraging an interest in the arts among young people is a primary objective of The Arts Society. This collaboration will produce a feature work which will enrich the academy building.” Alfie added: “I’m excited to be working with and alongside the students during the residency. It

“There will also be a huge sense of pride and achievement when they see their work exhibited.” The residency will run for two weeks when the finished artwork will be unveiled and presented to the school. Work created by Alfie, and by individual students during the fortnight, will also be displayed. MARCH 2018 | 17

HOME + LIFESTYLE

Too many shades of grey BY ANDREW SOUTHWOOD It’s been one of the longest winters I can remember. Not the coldest, not the whitest, but the relentless damp dark cloudy days have pushed even us weather optimists to the edge. It’s not like we’ve been flooded out with torrential rain, but just a steady build up of unyielding wet days with no breaks to let us dry out. The grass fields have turned to saturated quagmires. Kids football matches descended to mud baths. You’re more likely to have lost a trainer in the swamp like conditions at Parkrun than have got a pb. During a brief and rare semi-break in the gloom I took my kids to Ickworth Park for some fresh air. As we opened the gate to the play area my heart sank. The entire play park was a bog, more akin to an enclosure for a drift of pigs than children. Two inches of

42 | MARCH 2018

slimy wet mud surrounded everything. I couldn’t see a single blade of grass. This wasn’t just a case of needing wellies, more like needing full wet suits, and then a pressure hose at the end before being allowed back in the car. However, I think it was the day after this ill fated trip to Ickworth when something extraordinary and quite unexpected happened. A large bright yellowy orange circle appeared in the sky. It was surrounded by this beautiful peaceful blue backdrop and almost, just almost, emitted some warmth that could be felt on my pale vitamin D deprived skin. Yes, the sun came out and suddenly all was right with the world. People smiled at each other in the street, I left the house without a woolly hat, and the whole of Suffolk had a spring in

its step. It was simply glorious wasn’t it!.It made us all remember what we have been missing for so many weeks. Of course the problem is it can’t last forever, and so, as the children returned to school, the heavy drizzle returned. My solar PV generation dropped to a wattage barely enough to power my phone charger. I was left wondering if I had dreamt those days of blue skies and sunshine. Yet, as far as I am aware, the earth still spins on its tilted axis and moves around the sun. These undisputed astronomical facts mean that spring, and then the summer, must follow in due course. Keep faith in the science. At some point in the coming months we will see sunshine and feel warmth!

Pauls jobs for the month General Gardening Maintenance

n Lawn edges can be cut and on a dry day turf laid and lawns cut n Now is a good time to install a pond as a garden feature n If the weather is suitable, apply a lawn weed and feed preparation towards the end of the month. n Give any plant pots a refresh. With small pots remove the plant, add some fresh compost and re-pot. For larger pots, just scrape off the top layer and add fresh compost material to the top. n Clean paths, paving, patios and steps with a pressure washer n Feed the birds.

Vegetable Garden n To ensure a regular supply of parsley later in the year sow the seed in pots n Plant early varieties of potatoes

in late March. You will need to chit your potatoes by standing them upright in a warm and light spot. Egg boxes are ideal. Once growth known as eyes begins they are ready to be planted n Choose the sunniest spot for planting onion sets 4” to 6” apart and 12” between rows. n Plant artichoke, beetroot, broad bean, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, carrot, lettuce, parsley and spinach.

Flower Garden n Plant summer-flowering bulbs such as Lilies and Gladiolus and Ranunculus into beds, borders and containers. n Prune fuchsias back to one or two buds on each shoot n Plant bare root roses n Cut back Dogwood. Cut down the oldest stems close to ground level which will

encourage it to shoot and grow new stems which will provide next winter’s colour. n If like me you bought pots of daffodils for show inside the home don’t just throw them away after flowering. Instead plant them in your garden and allow the leaves to die down naturally. n Hydrangeas - any old flower heads should be cut off just above a strong new bud n Cut back Buddleia and Lavatera to 15cms. Don’t worry it will quickly grow back.

Fruit Garden n Final chance this month to prune your apple and pear trees before they start to bloom. Aim to remove any dead branches congested or crossing stems n Plant raspberry canes n Plant fruit trees

This months poem... “March bustles in on windy feet And sweeps my doorstep and my street. She washes and cleans with pounding rains, Scrubbing the earth of winter stains.

CHURCH NEWS

EASTER –

A TIME FOR NEW LIFE Spring always brings fresh colour into our lives as our gardens start to come to life after the bleakness of winter. The weather starts to warm up, days lengthen, and new shoots push through the soil, seeking the sun. New life is also the theme of the greatest festival in the Church’s calendar – EASTER. It is a great time to make a new start. Easter celebrates the day over 2000 years ago when the world was changed for ever. As John wrote: “For God loved the world so much that he gave his only son so that everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life.” Jesus lived a blameless life and revealed his Father’s true nature to us. His love for us was shown by his willingness to die on the cross at Calvary as the one and only sacrifice for all our wrongs. Three days later he rose from death and is still alive today.

Christians don’t put their faith in a dead hero from the past, but in someone who is alive and active in their own lives and in the world. That, in a nutshell, is the real message of Easter.
