Litter

LOCAL NEWS

We’ve been saddened recently to see how much litter is accumulating around the area – particularly in the community woodland behind The Macebearer. Again, we have several local heroes who have been clearing up after others but please, please, please use a bin and encourage others to do so. It’s only a few people spoiling it for others but the area is so much nicer for us all when litter free.

PARKING

Parking issues seem to be escalating again around the area. In particular we have had to involve the Police recently to take action against people who are parking on the green verge in front of the Hospital. The green verge is covered by the double yellow line restrictions that run the length of Hardwick Lane, so parking anywhere along there (yes – even on the verge) is not allowed and you will be ticketed if you do so.

Locality Budgets

Don’t forget that as County, Borough and Town Councillors we are given a pot of money each to spend in our areas. This money is to help out local community groups, initiatives and causes and we have used it for a variety of different things over recent months. If you are involved in a scheme or project or have an idea for our locality money please do get in touch – we are keen to hear from as many people as possible. NOVEMBER 2016 | 11

CARDS FOR GOOD CAUSES Bury St Edmunds Charity Christmas Card Shop is stocking up for the festive season! The festive season gets under way in Bury St Edmunds on Thursday 13th October when the Cards for Good Causes charity Christmas card shop opens at ‘Olivia Benn’ on Angel Hill, a new location for 2016. Perfect for those who want to get ahead in their Christmas preparations while supporting a range of national and local charities, the shop will offer a fantastic range of cards and Christmas goods. Staffed by a team of local volunteers, the Bury St Edmunds pop-up shop is part of a network of 300 temporary shops run Cards for Good Causes, the UK’s largest multi-charity Christmas card organisation. It represents more than 250 charities including Alzheimer’s Society, Cancer Research UK, NSPCC, Parkinson’s UK and RNLI as well as selling cards from a number of local charities including East Anglian Air Ambulance, St Nicholas Hospice and Suffolk Wildlife Trust. Shoppers will be able to choose from hundreds of different Christmas card designs, as well as traditional advent calendars and candles, wrapping paper, gift tags, napkins and stocking fillers. Pat Field, Shop Manager for Cards for Good Causes says: “Buying charity Christmas cards is one of the simplest ways to support good causes this festive season. Sales of the cards not only generate funds with which the charities can make a real difference, but also purchasing and sending them helps raise awareness of the vital work these charities do. Come along and find us on Angel Hill in Bury St Edmunds by looking out for our distinctive triangular red Santa sign.” In the past ten years, charities have received more than £40 million from Cards for Good Causes, representing at least 70p in every pound, out of which charities have had to pay for the production and distribution of their Christmas cards and any VAT. Shop Opening Hours: 10am - 4pm Monday to Saturday Trading from the 13th October until the 17th December. Shop Address: Olivia Benn • 4 Angel Hill • Bury St Edmunds For further information visit www.cardsforcharity.co.uk or follow us on Facebook or Twitter.

Headmaster, Mervyn Watch with his wife Rosie.

What’s in a Fee? As I alluded to in my last piece, we are in the middle of the ‘Open Day’ season; the first round of events to encourage parents to take the plunge or at least consider the possibility of an Independent Education for their children. Having visited and potentially made your choice, the next big problem will be paying for it and making sure that you feel that you are getting value for money. This is often a difficult thing to rationalise, as it could be argued that Independent Education is a lifestyle choice rather than a must have item. Recent figures estimate that it costs approximately £150000 to educate a child from 5 to 18 at an Independent Day School and as much as £300000 if you are considering boarding. Before you take a sharp intake of breath, these are average amounts using all the available figures from Independent Schools around the country. However, it does beg the question; what am I getting for my money? It has long been a belief that our children’s education is actually a long-term investment and when you are presented with figures like the ones above, this really hits home, as the only family expense likely to cost more will be your mortgage. So what are you getting for your fee? Our Chair of Governors has, for some time, promoted our school off the back of the mantra that we provide ‘a first class education, that is real value for money’. At South Lee, we take the idea that the fee is ‘all-inclusive’ to mean exactly that, and so our parents are never surprised with endless extras on the fees bill. All our pupils have access to our fantastic Individual Development Department which provides support or extension to all our pupils as part of

the fee, where in some schools this is charged at an hourly or half-hourly rate. Likewise, lunches are included in the fee; our Chef, Gary Oakshott and his team prepare all our meals from fresh produce, delivered daily. Our Early Years and Pre Prep pupils receive specialist tuition in languages, PE and Games, IT and Music, and our ‘wrap around care’ means that for those who need it the school is open for breakfast at 7.30am and our Prep School pupils can be collected from 2nd Prep at 6pm. For more details or to arrange a visit, contact Mrs Ronge – Registrar, on 01284 754654 or visit our website. www.southlee.co.uk office@southlee.co.uk

Pauls jobs for the month General Maintenance

n Last year I remember cutting lawns up until Christmas though usually I find that by 2nd week of November that you can put away your lawn mower until Spring as plants and grass enter a state of dormancy when temperatures fall below 6c (43f). n Now is the time to do a garden check. By this I mean be prepared for any potential problems that might be caused by the weather by:- checking your fence posts to ensure they are not at the point of rotting off, sheds and gates have proper locks and latches , plant stakes are firmly in the ground are still supporting plants and outdoor taps are properly lagged.

This months poem...

Pauls

Vegetable and Fruit Garden n For an early crop of broad beans next May plant seeds this month.

n Apply glue bands to the trunks of fruit trees to prevent wingless female winter moths climbing the trunks and laying their eggs in the branches.

Flower Garden n Plant out roses making sure you fill the hole with a mixture of bone meal and peat n Still time to plant spring flowering bulbs n Pansies and violas will make an attractive display in a hanging basket or container and can be set out now.

n Tidy up your perennials. Dead stems can be cut away, any leaves removed give the bare areas a fork over and then spread a mulch of compost or manure. n Now is the time to dig up your dahlia bulbs for storage over winter in a dry, frost free place. Gently remove most of the dirt from the tubers cut back all of the growth and then keep somewhere dry upside down so any moisture drains from the centre of the tubers. Remove further dirt once the plant has dried in a further couple of weeks and keep in a little compost or covered with newspaper.

November comes And November goes, With the last red berries And the first white snows. With night coming early, And dawn coming late, And ice in the bucket And frost by the gate. The fires burn And the kettles sing, And earth sinks to rest Until next spring. - Elizabeth Coatsworth
