Bayhealth nurses donate scrubs

Earlier this year, nursing units at Bayhealth Kent General and Milford Memorial donated their scrubs to doctors going on a mission trip to Honduras. In the winter, nursing units at both hospitals changed their scrubs from pale blue to bright pink. Rather than have nurses get rid of the scrubs, Deborah Doyle, RN, IBCLC, suggested nurses donate the uniforms to medical professionals going on a mission trip. More than 100 sets of scrubs were donated from the Women’s Services and Pediatric departments. Doyle coordinated the donations. Typically physicians buy scrubs before the trips and leave them for doctors in the respective areas to use. Doyle said donating scrubs to the group enabled the volunteers to go on their June 2015 mission trip without purchasing more uniforms. The mission trip to Honduras took place June 20-27 with more than 20 volunteers which included pediatricians, dentists, nurses and other medical professionals.

Nanticoke Health Pavilion is dedicated By Lynn R. Parks At the recent dedication of the Nanticoke Health Pavilion in Seaford, Nanticoke Health Services president and CEO Steve Rose said that the building is “more than just bricks and mortar.” “This is a new model for patient-centered care,” he said. “What we are doing here is very innovative. It’s a great thing for Seaford and a great thing for western Sussex County.” Gov. Jack Markell, who also attended the dedication, went even farther. “This is the holy grail of what’s being talked about all over the country,” he said. “A lot of people from a lot of places will be visiting you to check out what you are doing.” The new Nanticoke Health Pavilion Seaford is on Nanticoke Health Services’ Mears Campus, at the corner of Herring Run and Bridgeville roads. The two-story, 33,000-square foot building was added onto the medical clinic that was already on the campus. The health pavilion is embracing the practice of “integrated healthcare.” As such, it houses a number of services, including primary care, obstetrics, gynecology, gastroenterology, general surgery, nephrology, pulmonary medicine and urology. Also located there are diagnostic imaging, lab and rehabilitation services. All of the personnel there, including the doctors, are employees of

Nanticoke Health Services. Patients there will have one electronic record, accessible by all of the doctors. Each doctor has a medical assistant, but other than that shares nursing and support staff. Each doctor also has a small personal office, but uses common examining rooms. Doctors will be able to discuss their patients face-to-face, Tom Brown, senior vice president of Nanticoke Health Services and president of the Nanticoke Physicians Network, said. The family practice and ob-gyn offices opened last week “and we are already seeing those conversations

taking place,” Brown added. That kind of care encourages patients to follow through on doctor’s instructions, Brown said. It also helps them to better manage their health. “We will see lower costs, improved patients outcomes and improved patient experiences,” Rose predicted. Markell repeated that prediction. And he added: “We believe that when healthcare is done right, you can do that. This is a huge step in the right direction.” Markell also said that the new health pavilion will be an economContinued on page 25

second annual 2015 Delaware Latino Summit held Oct. 22 in Wilmington. Through a number of discussions and sessions, participants established two crucial goals that would provide better educational opportunities for Latinos: Increase the number

of teachers for English language learners and for English as a second language, and hire more Latino teachers. Sponsored by the Delaware Hispanic Commission, the summit strives to further the Commission’s Hispanic Public Policy Agenda, which is a blueprint for advancing the Latino community in the areas of economic development, civil rights, health and social services, government accountability, immigration reform and education. A highlight of the summit was Gov. Markell’s address in Spanish to the audience during the plenary session. Governor Markell congratulated the Hispanic Commission on a tremendous accomplishment in 2015: The adoption of Senate Bill 59, which created a driving privilege card option for undocumented residents. Some 60 sponsors and exhibitors were on location to present products and services available to the Latino community. Participants interacted in person and through on-the-spot virtual input using the Train by Cell mobile app. The Delaware Hispanic Commission, whose members are appointed by the Governor, meets bimonthly to address the most important needs of the First State’s rapidly growing Latino families. Redefining knee replacement surgery at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital Dr. Pasquale Petrera, Orthopedic Surgeon, will tell you the Exactech GPS ® Guided Personalized Surgery for total knee replacement surgery is the way to go. Dr. Petrera is now performing this surgery at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, treating more than 100 patients in Seaford to date. Exactech GPS® is the latest advancement in technology that provides surgeons with realtime guidance and alignment data during surgery. Similar to a navigation device in your car, this advanced surgery platform provides a visual map of the patient’s joint on a screen, allowing the surgeon to easily make adjustments, use minimally invasive techniques and perform implant alignment according to the individual patient’s needs. When it comes to knee replacement, accurate alignment of the implant is critical to the overall longevity and function of the knee. Traditionally, surgeons use pre-operative X-rays, instrumentation and special techniques to plan the surgery and calculate the fit and positioning of the total knee implant. While this has worked well for years, Exactech GPS® was developed to assist surgeons increase precision and has been shown to be accurate with less than one degree of variability. 18

Dr. Petrera HOW IT WORKS During total joint replacement surgery, the infrared camera and active tracker technology work together within the sterile field of the operating room to monitor the position and mechanical alignment of the joint replacement. With a few simple trackers placed on the patient’s bone, the system sends data about the patient’s anatomical structure and joint movements to the computer. The computer analyzes the information gathered and displays it onto the display screen in a graphical format with the calculated key measurements. The images on the screen allow the surgeon to decide where to remove bone and appropriately place the implant.

NHS Preop knee surgery often experience less blood in the knee which results in less pain and a quicker recovery time. JOINT CAMP AT NANTICOKE All the orthopedic surgeons at Nanticoke, including Dr. Petrera, will also tell you that having this procedure done at Nanticoke is a good choice. Because of the significant pre and post-surgery education and support provided through The Joint Camp, many patients experience early mobility, often recovering faster than those who have not gone through this type of program. So what exactly is Joint Camp? The Joint Camp at Nanticoke actually begins prior to your surgery with a pre-operative class. During this free patient education class you are given all the information you need to prepare for surgery, exercises to help you recover faster after surgery, and you meet many of the people who will be providing your care while you are in the hospital. You should bring your “coach” with you to the class. Your

NHS Postop “coach” is a member of your family or your support person that will be helping care for you after surgery, once you return home. The day after surgery, and sometimes the afternoon of surgery, you will begin group therapy. Group therapy involves exercises, “mini-competitions” and other fun activities to help get you moving again. By doing therapy in a group setting, patients build friendships and have additional moral support from others also having surgery. Often, a little competition between patients arises and pushes patients to get moving more quickly. Another benefit of group therapy is that a patient’s coach gets to participate as well. This helps the coach learn and become more comfortable with the care a patient needs once he or she returns home. All rehabilitation services are provided for patients on the same floor as their patient room. For more information about the Orthopedic Program at Nanticoke, call 302-629-6611 x5105 or visit www.nanticoke.

org. Nanticoke Health Services is an award winning hospital focused on people. Nanticoke is also the only hospital on the Delmarva Peninsula to currently hold an “A” rating for Patient Safety from Leapfrog Group, a national organization that measure healthcare quality. And, Nanticoke is one of only two hospitals on the Delmarva Peninsula to be included in the 2015 Most Wired Award by HH&N and among the top 20 percent in the nation for the integration of the Electronic Medical Record. Part 1: 6 questions that will lead to a content strategy When it comes to marketing, are you a sailor who boards a ship without a rudder or a compass? The voyage may be exciting. But do you always get to where you want and need to go? As you start to think about how you will reach more prospects and clients in 2016 with your online content marketing, you must develop a strategy. You need a compass to guide your efforts and measure your results so that you’re not drifting aimlessly. Every single Facebook post or piece of website content should have a purpose. At its core, content marketing focuses on creating and distributing valuable, relevant, and consistent content to attract and retain a clearly defined audience — and ultimately to drive profitable customer action. In that Content Marketing Institute definition, three key elements stand out:

Valuable, relevant, and consistent content Clearly defined audience Profitable customer action A content strategy helps ensure that you’re thinking about all three elements anytime that you engage with your clients and prospects. The fact is that if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. A national survey by the Content Marketing Institute found that 65 percent of business-to-consumer organizations with a documented strategy rated themselves highly in terms of content marketing effectiveness, compared with 28 percent who had a verbal strategy and 11 percent with no strategy.

Cornerstone questions for a strategy You can develop a content marketing strategy by answering six cornerstone questions.

1. Why do we want to develop content? 2. Whom do we want to reach with our content? 3. What will we write about? 4. When will we Rivera create content? 5. Where will we share our content? 6. How will we know that our content and our strategy are effective? This month we’ll focus on understanding the importance of developing content and knowing your target audience’s needs. Question 1: Why do we want to develop content?

Front and center in your content strategy should stand the question: Why do we want to develop content? The best content strategy aligns your content with your organization’s objectives and strategic goals. The Content Marketing Institute found that the top six goals that drive content development are: 1. Customer retention 2. Brand awareness 3. Engagement 4. Lead generation 5. Lead nurturing 6. Sales As you develop your content, think about what goal you want to accomplish. Stay focused. Select one or two goals. Goals dictate the type of content that you’ll produce. If your goal is to increase brand awareness and raise your visibility as an industry leader, you’ll want to pursue journalistic-style content about industry trends and offer valuable

advice and tips. If you want to generate more leads on your website, then think about the questions that prospects ask themselves as they move through the buyer’s journey. Your content must nurture all stages of the sales cycle and inspire leads. Question 2: Whom do we want to reach with our content? Your target audience can’t be everyone online. If you cast a wide net, you’ll catch plenty of fish. But they won’t be the right kind of fish. Whom do we want to reach with our content? You need to identify your ideal clients, the ones that share your values and vision. To understand your target audience, you need to go beyond demographics. Buyer personas are a much more detailed version of your target audience because you give a name and identity to each of your target groups. At a minimum, you should:

Paint a vivid picture of the person with details that explain why he or she needs you Define where he or she is in the buying cycle Describe what he or she needs from you to make a decision and move forward Identify what you want him or her to do Craft a quote that summarizes his or her problem Next month, we’ll talk about the what, when, where, and how of a content strategy. To download a content strategy checklist, or to get help developing your content strategy, visit www. hookpr.com/compass. Patricia V. Rivera, owner of Hook PR Group, is a brand journalist and content strategist for purpose-driven organizations.

TOURISM

By Tina Coleman, Southern Delaware Tourism Surveys tell us all kinds of interesting things. According to the U.S. Travel Association, the top leisure travel activities for U.S. domestic travelers are, in order of preference, visiting relatives, shopping, visiting friends, fine dining and beaches. This is great news for Southern Delaware because we’ve got them all. Along with the increasing influx of new residents to Southern Delaware come visiting family and friends, who become acquainted with all our area has to offer. Our tax free shopping and vibrant retail community are very attractive to people from surrounding states; our 5-star beaches have always been, and remain, a huge attraction; and our area’s reputation for excellent restaurants continues to spread and is making Southern Delaware a foodie mecca for travelers from the Mid Atlantic and beyond. While it may not always be easy dealing with the summertime traffic headaches

24

Business Report | December 2015

Surveying Tourism and crowded conditions, tourism is a fact of life here and the natural beauty of the area, the events, attractions and restaurants that bring in the tourists are what make this such a great place for all of us to live, work and play. Tourism pays big dividends for us, too. Fifteen thousand Sussex County residents are employed in tourism-related positions. It generates $850 million in direct sales each year and, for each dollar spent by a visitor, another $1.20 is generated in indirect sales to our local economy. It attracts new businesses (and jobs) to our county, and saves each of our households approximately $800 in taxes each year. Tourism is a huge win for all of us because it not only supports us economically, but it encourages us to work together as a community to protect, sustain and expand the resources that support it including our waterways, wetlands, parks, trails and infrastructure, all of which benefits our visitors during their stays with us, certainly, but also benefits all of us year-round. Each year, Southern Delaware Tourism

does its own survey. We encourage our visitors to complete questionnaires that help us determine what they like best about visiting here, how long they visit, where they stay when they visit, what they enjoy most about Southern Delaware, what we could do better, where they’re visiting from, how old they are, their household income, and when they prefer to visit. Southern Delaware Tourism is currently in the process of tallying the responses its 2015 Visitors Survey, the results of which will be available later this month. Our office uses these survey results along with our website and social media analytics, reader responses from our print and digital advertising, and other tools to help us hone the focus of our marketing and outreach efforts to attract groups and individual visitors to Southern Delaware throughout the year. As 2015 draws to a close, we look forward to new opportunities and challenges in 2016, and we thank all of our local tourism partners for their ongoing support. Happy Holidays!

They both underscored the economic imperative to be able to provide quality health care at lower prices. “It is a simple reality that if we don’t find a way to access better health care for less money, our country won’t make it fiscally,” Carney said. “As our population ages, we need to find ways to bring the cost of healthcare down. Drought disaster loans available from SBA The U.S. Small Business Administration has announced that federal Economic Injury Disaster Loans are available to small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and most private nonprofit organizations throughout Delaware as a result of excessive heat and drought from July 16 through Sept. 29, 2015. Under this declaration, the SBA’s Economic Injury Disaster Loan program is available to eligible farm-related and nonfarm-related entities that suffered financial losses as a direct result of this disaster. With the exception of aquaculture enterprises, SBA cannot provide disaster loans to agricultural producers, farmers or ranchers. However, nurseries are eligible to apply for economic injury disaster loans for losses caused by drought conditions. The loan amount can be up to $2 million with interest rates of 2.625 percent for private nonprofit organizations and 4 percent for small businesses, with terms up to 30 years. The

SBA determines eligibility based on the size of the applicant, type of activity and its financial resources. Loan amounts and terms are set by the SBA and are based on each applicant’s financial condition. The loans are not intended to replace lost sales or profits. Applicants may apply online using the Electronic Loan Application (ELA) via SBA’s secure website at disasterloan.sba.gov/ela.

Disaster loan information and application forms may also be obtained by calling the SBA’s Customer Service Center at 800-6592955 (800-877-8339 for the deaf and hard-ofhearing) or by sending an email to disastercustomerservice@sba.gov. Loan applications can be downloaded from www.sba.gov/disaster. Completed loan applications must be returned to SBA no later than July 5, 2016.
