Nanticoke Riverfest to kick off July12 By Lynn R. Parks For the 19th year, the city of Seaford will welcome people into its downtown, to get to know businesses that are there and to celebrate the Nanticoke River that flows nearby. Seaford’s annual Riverfest, with the theme “Rollin’ on the Nanticoke,” will be held July 12 and 13, starting with opening ceremonies at 5 p.m. Friday on the main stage in the Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church parking lot. The festival will run through Saturday evening, when the band Mike Hines and the Look will close it out with a performance beginning at 9 p.m. A carnival, set up in the lot behind Royal Farms, will open at 6 on Thursday evening. It will be open from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday and noon to 10 p.m. Saturday. “Riverfest is a great opportunity for the community to come out and share some time together,” said Trisha Newcomer, festival chairwoman. “People can take in what we have to offer in downtown Seaford and enjoy some experiences that they don’t always get to do.” Primary among those unusual experiences is the festival’s cornerstone event, the Nanticoke River Float-In. Due to the tides, the Float-In will be held early this year, starting at 10 a.m. Saturday at the office of Benz Urology, east of town just off U.S. 13. Hundreds of participants are expected to float down the river to the city’s canoe launch on Water Street. Registration for the Float-In will start at 8 a.m. Cost to float is $1; participants are asked to bring exact change and their own floating devices. A few inner tubes will be available for purchase, at $15 for single tubes and $20 for doubles. Service Tire Truck Center will have an air pump at the site to blow up inner tubes. A few lifejackets will also be available for purchase. Children who are under 16 are required to wear lifejackets. Organizers are asking floaters to park in Seaford’s

downtown and ride the shuttle to the launch site. That way, they will be near their cars when the Float-In is finished. There will not be shuttles back to the launch site. Events on Friday evening will include the Mayor’s Challenge, with area politicians competing with water balloons for the Mayor’s Cup. The action will start at 5:30 p.m. behind city hall. Seaford Mayor Bill Bennett was last year’s winner. The annual Little Miss and Junior Miss Riverfest pageants will start at 6:30 p.m. on the festival’s main stage. Girls age 3 through 6 (little miss) and 7 through 10 (junior miss) will vie for the crowns. The pageants will be limited to 20 contestants, who will be judged on talent and appearance. The contestants are required to wear bathing suits. Registration forms are available on the festival’s website, www.nanticokeriverfest.com. The band Anything Goes will perform on the main stage Friday night, starting at 9 p.m. At 9 a.m. Saturday, the festival will get into full swing, with the opening of food and arts and crafts booths. In addition to the Float-In, Saturday’s activities will

include the Canoe and Kayak Challenge, which will launch from Water Street, a youth fishing tournament along the Riverwalk, a car show at High and Market streets and a motorcycle show along South Conwell Street. The Duck Dash, a Riverfest tradition that features yellow plastic ducks racing in the Nanticoke, will get underway at 4:30 p.m. There will be a dunking booth and children’s activities will be set up behind city hall. For the first time, the festival will include a boat show, which will be set up along Water Street. Throughout the day Saturday, there will be entertainment on the city hall steps and on the main stage in the Mt. Olivet parking lot. Entertainment at city hall will include the festival’s duck calling contest. On the main stage, a Family Feud-style competition, sponsored by Delmarva Broadcasting, will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

16TH ANNUAL Car Show Saturday, July 13, 10 a.m. Sponsored by Megee Motors

From 27 cars in 1998 to 110 cars in 2012, the Riverfest Car Show has grown to be an important part of the annual festival. With show sponsorship covering most of the costs, registration fees go to the Nanticoke Riverfest to help grow the festival. For the seventh year the show is sponsored by Megee Motors, a growing, third generation dealership located in Georgetown. Floyd Megee started selling Studebakers in 1948, successful because he took care of the customer. Now 62 years later, the dealership is owned by son Terry and his wife, Vanessa, (president and general manager). Along with Floyd’s grandchildren, Lindsay (finance manager), and Matt (service manager),

they still use Floyd’s golden rule, “take care of the customer as you would want to be taken care of.” Megee Motors supports many charities, especially those involving children. “They are our future, close to our hearts!” The Boys & Girls Club and Little Leagues are very special organizations. When Terry’s not at the dealership or at a meeting, you may find him in a boat fishing, or in the woods. On weekends he and his family enjoy Rehoboth and Dewey beach life.

Rotary Dunking Booth The local chapter of Rotary International is proud to sponsor a dunking booth at the annual Seaford Riverfest. The proceeds from the booth are used to help support our two Rotary Houses. In addition it gives the community an opportunity to dunk several of our local politicians and community leaders. We encourage you to come out and try your hand at dunking. Several special participants will be in the tank that day, so stop by the booth periodically through the day to see who will make their appearance in the dunking booth. In 1990, the Rotary club built our first transitional shelter. Through many fund raising events and volunteer hours, the Rotary club purchased land and built the houses debt free. The rotary club maintains both buildings, and provides rent free accommodations for up to three months while Social Services work with them to re-establish self-sufficiency, including a savings program. We are honored to provide much-needed services to our community!

Insane Courage

Saturday, July 13 12 p.m. Sponsored by Kaye Construction & the Delaware Division of the Arts Insane Courage band was formed in late August 2012, after Sara Ann Garrison, soloist, competed against Landon Jones, Sammy Price and Parker Sard, a band who called themselves Derailed, in the 2012 Delaware State Fair Youth Talent Competition. Sara Ann sang a Carrie Underwood song and Derailed played a song by Ozzy Osborne. Landon contacted Sara Ann later that same day to ask if she was looking for a guitarist, bassist and drummer. The two spent a couple of weeks in August in practice sessions to see how well they would work together before bringing in the remaining two band-mates. At their first practice session, they wrote their first original song “Summer Life”. This fueled their desire to write their second original song “Waitin’ On Love”. They felt confident that they were ready to work as a full band. After 5 practice sessions as a full band they learned 22 songs and were ready for their debut at The Sport Zone in Smyrna on October 6, 2012. In five months Insane Courage has written four original songs, have appeared in the local newspapers, and are getting requests for bookings. The sky is the limit for this hot teen band! Their name, Insane Courage, comes from a quote “20 seconds of insane courage brings great things”.
