Lapidary club offers a multifaceted experience BY KATE SEARS they find, or create jewellery using soldering and grounds casting techniques.

There is a hidden gem in the of McClelland Gallery in Langwarrin. For more than 40 years the Frankston & Peninsula Lapidary Club has been specialising in faceting, cabochon, opal carving, chain weaving, silver smithing, and mineral collection.

The art of faceting is the process of cutting and polishing a variety of gemstones, from sapphire to quartz. Cabochon, on the other hand, is cutting, grinding and polishing a range of rocks and minerals. Club members can express their artistic talents with opal carving and chain weaving classes, making bracelets and earrings, while silver smithing classes teach them to make settings for the stones www.franklyfrankston.com.au

Field trips led by experienced organisers give members the chance to experience the excitement of finding their own semi-precious gems and minerals, which they can then cut, polish and set into beautiful statement jewellery. The club has a range of minerals and gems on display so new members are able to identify the treasures they find on field trips. The club also invites the public to donate any unwanted minerals they have to add to this display, or people can sell them on a commission basis in the club’s annual rock auction. This August 26-27 at the Cranbourne Public Hall the club will have 20 traders attending for the Annual Gem Show. They’ll be selling a large

range of rocks, gems, minerals, crystals, jewellery and even equipment from around the world. Professionals will be sharing their knowledge as visitors partake in raffles, while enjoying food and drink. The club is open on Sundays from 10am-2pm, Wednesdays 4-8pm, Thursdays 10am-3pm and Saturdays 10am-4pm; it is closed during school holidays on Wednesday evenings. Visit the website for details about becoming a member. Passionate performers FOR MORE THAN 70 YEARS Frankston Theatre Group has been operating for more than 70 years and has continuously provided opportunities for involvement in community theatre. The group started as a fundraising activity for the Red Cross in 1942, but it quickly developed with the enthusiastic support of the Frankston community. As a founding member of the Victorian Drama League, FTG hosted its early one-act play festivals that ran for a few weeks. These plays would draw entrants from all over the metropolitan area. Consistently producing three to four productions annually, the group showcased new actors and directors. Its vision statement proclaims: “Frankston Theatre Group seeks to be a vital, financially sound organisation committed to presenting a broad range of theatrical work to the widest possible audience, at a very high level of quality, while affording members the opportunity to develop and contribute their skills for their own satisfaction and for the entertainment of the public.” FTG would regularly perform in the Frankston Mechanics Hall from the 1940s until 2001, even after it was rebuilt after a fire in 1954. The group also performed in high school auditoriums, St James the Less Church Hall, Mt Eliza Community Centre and George Jenkins Theatre. More recently, FTG has staged productions at the

Frankston Arts Centre after it opened in 1995, and at Cube 37. Many members have been inspired by their experiences in community theatre and have moved on to undertake studies in the field, chasing professional careers within the performing arts. The group’s next production, A Sting in the Tale, will be performed on Friday, July 28, Saturday, July 29, Friday, August 4, and Saturday, August 5, at 8pm, with a matinee on Sunday, August 6, at 2pm. Herd about the latest additions to EastLink’s landscaping team? Goats are now helping clear noxious weeds and reduce the fuel load from a steep and rocky parcel of land along the tollway. The landscaping team responsible for maintaining 480ha identified a small area where blackberry and flax-leaved broom had taken hold and where overgrown vegetation presented a potential fire risk. However, the rugged area posed significant safety risks to staff and equipment. The environmentally friendly, sustainable and safe solution was for the team to engage the services of a herd of goats. The sure-footed animals are at home on the tough terrain and have displayed quite an appetite for the weeds since being introduced to the area last December. Unable to get on to the tollway or the EastLink Trail, the animals are able to safely feed on the weeds’ foliage and leaf buds, which exhausts the root system and kills the plant while leaving the soil fungi, insects and worms unharmed. The area’s potential fire load is not only being eaten, it is also being trampled by the goats, and this meant the area required no extra attention over summer. The goats have been provided and cared for by Colin Arnold, of Graze Away, who has been working with goats for 20 years to assist in the restoration of native habitats. These ‘Staff Members of the Month’ will provide a better habitat for ground fauna and will in turn attract a greater variety of birds, such as wrens, kites, butcher birds, finches and kookaburras.

Get ready for this Frankston! Selfproclaimed “Safety Beach boy” George Calombaris is bringing his Hellenic diet inspired restaurant Mastic to the Mornington Peninsula, and that’s just for starters. Mr Calombaris has been a familiar face at Safety Beach for around 10 years. His children James (6) and Michaela (4) and his partner Natalie love the Peninsula lifestyle just as much as he does. “The kids’ eyes light up as soon as they know we are heading to the beach to see family and friends. We were down last Friday (March) and the weather was cracking! I mean, what’s not to love about it? I can get about without any hassles. Locals are friendly and the space… It’s a fabulous break from a hard working industry where it’s all about being busy and survival of the fittest.” And that’s what George’s life is - insanely busy and fit for a hard worker. There’s 17 restaurants, ambassadorial positions for Swisse, Bulla Dairy, Qatar Airways and Bowel Cancer amongst others, and then of course he’s co-judge on the mega successful MasterChef Australia on Network 10. “I don’t like sitting still and am always obsessed by something. This season’s MasterChef is going to be better than ever. You know you can feel it in your gut. MasterChef is like an extension of your own

( 6

kitchen and everyone gets treated with respect. This one’s unbelievable and we have a lot of fun too.” So, here’s the Mastic deal. George has had two executive chefs scouring the Mornington Peninsula for the best local produce and he’s bought 19 acres in Flinders for winter time planting (think 90 per cent fruit and vegetables). There’s no set date for the opening of his mini holistic village (Mastic, produce and health retreat) set on five acres in Red Hill - but we’ll let you know as soon as we do! One thing’s for sure, George wants to plant roots on the Peninsula and the seeds are already sowing. “The Peninsula is full of fabulous stuff. You know there’s a National Park behind the (Hummingbird) site where Indigenous Australians used to smoke fish in the hollows of the trees. Radek (Sali, his business partner) and I are keen to create a place where friends can experience food, lifestyle, health and happiness. I may even re-locate The Press Club…” What? Never! In the meantime, there’s the annual trip to Greece, television commitments, awards, cooking, family/friends and Peninsula produce and wineries to keep this Safety Beach boy very busy. MasterChef Australia season nine commences very soon on Network Ten.

Europe’s the goal for young soccer stars BY KATE SEARS

Langwarrin boys Jack Geddes and Arjuna Surya-Peddell have been offered the opportunity to travel to Germany and the Netherlands with Futbal First School of Soccer on September 23 with a select team of 14. This amazing opportunity will enable them to train with and play against some of the best youth soccer clubs in the world, including Ajax and Borussia Dortmund. The Ajax club in the Netherlands is the best youth academy in the world and would provide the motivated boys with huge exposure, which isn’t something to be missed. These 11-year-old best mates have played together since their first soccer game at Langwarrin Soccer Club when they were five, but this is their first year playing for the Springvale White Eagles. Jack’s mum, Leanne, and Arjuna’s mum, Kristy, are proud as punch and couldn’t imagine their boys missing this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity due to a lack of money. Both women are single mothers with three kids each and always put their children first, but at $5700 per child this trip is a little out of reach for them. Kristy says: “I’m never the one to be organising fundraisers, but I always help others’ efforts.” She hopes that her good karma will be returned in this case. Jack and Arjuna are already focused on their future careers, and at such a young age that is to www.franklyfrankston.com.au

be applauded. Jack’s recently faced tough times, losing his father and grandfather in the past year, but that hasn’t stopped his training. It would be a dream come true for both boys to take up this opportunity. If these dedicated young stars make it to Europe, their parents feel they’ll learn that if you work hard, anything is possible. Kristy admits the boys will be the only kids on the team travelling without a parent due to the financial constraints on the two

women and their other children requiring care. “They’ll be okay; they are very close with the coach and they have each other.” Let’s get these boys on their way! Volunteer’s retirement the end of an era Robert O’Loughlin has retired after 46 years with Frankston South Community and Recreation Centre. Robert remembers the place being built in 1971, and he attended basketball games and dinner dances there when it was known as the Frankston Police and Citizens Youth Centre. After serving as a police constable for more than

( 10

20 years, the long-time Frankston South resident headed to the Outback to teach disadvantaged children. Unfortunately, a few years later Robert broke his leg and was forced to return to the community centre – this time for rehabilitation. It felt like home to him, so when he was asked to volunteer at the centre he jumped at the opportunity. To him the centre was filled with good people who would help anyone with a

positive attitude. Robert would work at the front desk every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning, and his friendliness endeared him to the countless patrons who visited the centre. Everyone knew his name, and he knew theirs. It really is the end of an era. A plaque and photograph commemorate Robert’s time at the centre.

The stars in his eyes have magnified since our sister publication Mornington Peninsula Magazine spoke to actor Ajay Banks last year after his study in L.A. A move to Canada is paying off for the Peninsula Grammar Old Boy, with a new agency (MVM Agency), new classes and an audition for a small role in a Netflix series. At last month’s New Renaissance Film Festival in Amsterdam Ajay won Best Actor for his role in Always, which he also wrote and produced and which was nominated for Best Film. Yet Ajay remains humble and credits his team for the film’s success. Ajay channelled his grief at the death of his grandparents into Always. It’s fictitious but inspired by his feelings, and it’s so powerful in its raw aesthetic that you feel like you’re a fly on the wall as you get a snapshot of the worst time in a person’s life. “It was cathartic to write about this boy who was grieving for his mother and how the people around him were grieving in their own way,” he says.

( 12

Thirst for the limelight does not motivate this mature young actor, nor does financial reward. “I’m not in it for the money,” he says. He has simply never wanted to do anything else. Acting from the age of 15, his passion just keeps growing. With a strong desire to tell stories, whether via script or performance, he’s on stage to connect with others. Ajay also played Brian in The Happiness Curve, which was well received at the LA Webfest; it was nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Writing and picked up the award for Outstanding Ensemble Cast. This international recognition was just that extra push he needed to make the move abroad. It’s a delightfully funny web series with heart thrown in too. Ajay enjoyed portraying Brian, who was a very different comedic yet intense character; a portrayal that was new to the actor. His advice? “When you want to give up, you shouldn’t.” W: Watch The Happiness Curve online at happiness-curve.com INSTA: @ajay_banks FB: @AjayBanksActor

Nathan Thompson has won the inaugural Student of the Year Award as the most exceptional automotive apprentice at Chisholm Institute. Nathan, a third-year automotive student, will receive a $2000 toolbox from ACM Parts. ACM chief executive Mike Kirkman said the award was a fundamental part of his company’s commitment to nurture and inspire outstanding talent in the automotive training industry. “An investment in the best and brightest students is an investment in the Australian collision and mechanical repair industry,” Mr Kirkman said. “ACM Parts is proud to have been able to give Nathan the tools and opportunities to help him succeed and www.franklyfrankston.com.au

BY LIZ ROGERS outdoors, always working and playing in the garden and I’ve always had a love for animals. I suppose the connection with the earth has always resinated with me,” she explains.

Not sure if you remember our story last year in Mornington Peninsula Magazine on Somerville pageant contestant Mikaela-Rose Fowler, but we thought you’d like an update on what this 21-yearold is up to now. When we last spoke, this driven woman was involved in the Miss Galaxy Australia National Finals. Twelve months on (after placing in the top 10 of the Miss Galaxy competition) she’s heading to the Golden Nugget in Los Vegas in June to represent Australia in the Ms Earth Pageant!

Mikaela-Rose Fowler is part of a family of go-getters who like to keep moving. Having already held the title of Miss Westernport 2015, the Ms Earth title is all about what the name suggests – promoting a sustainable lifestyle and reducing human-kind’s impact on earth - and that’s something Mikaela-Rose is passionate about. “I’ve been in pageantry for a couple of years now and wanted to find a pageant that aligned with my values. Ms Earth, run nationally by Danielle Marsh and internationally by Rachel Fikes, is exactly the kind of title I’m interested in upholding. It allows me to focus on important issues like sustainability, natural resources, reusing and recycling. I grew up

( 24

Pageantry work is gruelling. There’s the behind scenes of building a portfolio of charity and community involvement, attending events, pageant coaching and lots of exercise and attention to diet. MikaelaRose also has months of hard work building up a social media profile ahead of her. “Ms Earth is a week-long pageant. You spend your time connecting with other contestants from all over the world, and making sure your message and personality shines through. Then there’s a three to five-minute question/answer segment with seven judges. On stage, you are assessed on overall health and fitness whilst sporting swimwear, and elegance and grace while in formal wear. It’s very demanding.” So, what are the benefits? “Working on things that are close to my heart, meeting great people and making a change. Oh, and I get to travel too!” Follow her on Facebook and Instagram to keep up with her adventure. She could be going to Nicaragua if she lands the Ms Earth crown. Inspirational. Carrum and Carrum Downs was originally known as Karrum Karrum, which means “boomerang” in the language of the area’s traditional owners. Aborigines would rest at the top of Olivers Hill and look north along the bay at the long expanse of sand that made the beach look like a boomerang. Recently, the area has been flourishing with the arrival of major department stores, new specialty stores, a kids’ play centre and much more, with the showroom and big box retailing sectors and industrial buildings continuing to grow.

The increased traffic flow from PeninsulaLink and the area’s changing demographics are influencing investor strategies for commercial properties and the location decisions for large retailers. Housing is booming, with families and young couples purchasing or building their first homes. Carrum and Carrum Downs is a central and convenient location with lots of opportunities, and positioned between the CBD and the Peninsula it is readily accessible. THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE

( 40

On the surface, The Lego Batman Movie looks every bit a kids’ flick, yet this take on superhero culture is packed with sharp satirical observations designed to have adults chuckling more than youngsters. This second big-screen outing from Lego has promoted the Will Arnett-voiced Batman to the leading role, mined the character’s rich 78-year history, then lampooned it with in-jokes. Still reeling from the loss of his parents, Batman has become commitment averse, even to his foes. Refusing to concede, the Joker (voiced by Zach

Showing at Hoyts, Wells St, Frankston

Galifianakis) is his greatest foe; the Clown Prince of Crime hatches a scheme to unleash a whole new wave of baddies on Gotham City - but not before he surrenders himself to the newly appointed Police Commissioner Barbara Gordon (Rosario Dawson), thereby deflating Batman’s massive ego. Over the course of the film, Batman will have to learn that teamwork is good and friends are important if The Caped Crusader is to be victorious. SCOTT JACKSON HHH

Valentine for Mother’s Day Treat your mother to this charming production of Shirley Valentine this Mother’s Day. With much humour, warmth, sympathy, human insight and a great deal of empathy for his female protagonist, Willy Russell brilliantly shows Shirley breaking out of the mould in which she was cast by society. Shirley Valentine is a wonderfully entertaining monologue by a 42-yearold Liverpool mother whose selfesteem has been battered by school, marriage and life in general. When www.franklyfrankston.com.au

her best friend wins a Greek vacation for two, Shirley grasps the chance to head for the sun, to re-find herself, follow her dreams and to get a new lease on life. Shirley Valentine won the award for Best Comedy at the 1988 Laurence Olivier Awards. This production stars the talented and vibrant Mandi Lodge of Busting Out, Menopause The Musical and Always...Patsy Cline fame. Shirley Valentine is at the Frankston Arts Centre on Friday, May 5, at 8pm. Tegan’s amazing year of growth Tegan Mawdsley, 18, a SkillsPlus Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning graduate, talks about what led her back to study. Everyone is raving about leaving school, but for me I am leaving my family. Training organisation SkillsPlus was the last resort for me. I had been out of school for 12 months because I had been raising my three younger siblings. Every day I woke up, got them ready for school, cleaned, cooked, got them ready for bed, cleaned a bit more and went to bed myself.

Complete Year 10, 11 and 12 SkillsPlus is a great place to study Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Our VCAL is a hands-on option for students aged 15-19 who wish to re-engage in their education and receive an accredited secondary certificate. We have continuous intake throughout the year. Eligibility criteria: Meet eligibility requirements for government subsidised training places. Be at least 15 years old as of January 1 2017.

with everything is incredible. I started to imagine working there with the amazing young people with a disability. It made me decide to enrol in a Certificate IV in Disability Services with BRACE, which I have now completed.

Obviously there was no time for school, so I dropped out. I fell into a really bad state of depression because there was no time to go see friends and I was constantly at home. In October 2014 I moved out of my mother’s house and in with other relatives. I started seeing Mel at SkillsPlus Employment Services who worked hard to get me into SkillsPlus Youth Education. I remember how scared I was on my first day and how I thought I wouldn’t make any friends. I was so wrong. Everyone was amazingly nice to me and it only got better. Later we started volunteering at Nepean School. I can’t even describe the joy I felt when we went there. That place just brings so much happiness to everyone’s lives. To see how happy the students were even when struggling

It has been a roller-coaster of emotions, but I would not change a thing. I have never met a more amazing group of people. Without them I wouldn’t be the person I am today. I am leaving SkillsPlus and BRACE with a Year 12 pass, a Certificate IV in Disability Services (CHC43115), a new job and an incredible family.

If you’re looking to add innovation, technology and efficiency to your business, then next month’s BITE Conference in Mornington is an absolute must. Billed as the business and technology event of the year, the BITE Conference will feature not one but a whole lineup of keynote speakers all under one roof. Among them is Andy Lark, an internationally renowned marketer and innovator in social media with 25 years’ experience across business-tobusiness and consumer sectors. During his career Andy has worked and lived in the majority of the world’s major markets and developed a reputation as a highly creative executive, marketing turn-around specialist, entrepreneur and authority on social media. He told a major conference last week: “The rate of change today is the slowest we will ever experience.” While Andy and the other speakers will provide you with plenty of food for www.franklyfrankston.com.au

thought, there will also be an amazing spread throughout the day to keep you well fed, with morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, as well as a barista on hand keeping the coffee flowing. All attendees will receive a showbag full of lots of goodies and there will be drinks afterwards to round off the day. There are also prizes up for grabs, including a three-night stay in a Melbourne Family Apartments threebedroom apartment and a desk bike so you can exercise while you’re at work. Conference organiser Shannon Smit said BITE was really set to bring the city-style conference to the Peninsula. “We must have got something right when we had so many sponsors get involved, including major companies such as Xero, Telstra, CBA and the Mornington Peninsula Shire,” Shannon said. “The enthusiasm for the conference has been overwhelming.” So to keep your business ahead of the field, race along to the BITE Conference on May 10 at Mornington Racecourse. Hospital undergoes major upgrade Work has started on a $9.7 million refurbishment of St John of God Frankston Rehabilitation Hospital to deliver new and improved patient accommodation and amenities. The work, which is expected to be completed early next year, includes converting three and four-bed wards to two-bed wards; increasing the number of single rooms; refurbishing patient rooms and ensuites; and improving front entrance access for patients and vehicles. A new kiosk, lounge area, three additional consulting rooms, a chapel and an adjoining multipurpose meeting room will all form part of the new-look foyer. Chief executive officer Sally Faulkner said the most critical component of the refurbishment was increasing the number of single rooms to provide patients with greater comfort and privacy during their recovery. “The design will also give us the flexibility to increase the bed capacity as required to meet the demands for our services,” Sally said. “While this is a comprehensive and detailed refurbishment, it will occur in stages so that we minimise the impact on our inpatient and outpatient services. We will continue with business as usual to provide our comprehensive rehabilitation services every day throughout the refurbishment.” ST JOHN OF GOD FRANKSTON REHABILITATION HOSPITAL A: 255-265 Cranbourne Rd, Frankston T: 9788 3333

By 2015, three of Maria’s five family members had been diagnosed with fructose intolerance after being unwell for many years.

Their diets needed to change, but Maria found her weekly shopping trip couldn’t be completed in just one supermarket. Instead, she was forced to search through many stores to find food that was not only suitable for them but was tasty enough for the rest of the family to enjoy. Determined that others would not have to go through the same search hassles, Maria opened the Fructose Friendly Store in Mount Eliza. Here you’ll find a wonderful range of food products, including baking and cooking ingredients, snacks, cereals, confectionery, pastas, sauces, soups and spices. Not only are they all suitable for fructoseintolerant people, everything is gluten free and suitable for those with coeliac disease and gluten intolerance. Many of the products on sale are organic,lactose-free, vegan or nut free.

PROPERTY OF THE MONTH

There is a blast from the past hiding in the centre of Chelsea. As 64 Chelsea Rd approaches its 70th birthday, the property has been put up for auction by the daughter and son of the original owner on what would have been his 100th birthday -April 29 - at 1.30pm.

( 60

This beloved house, which was bought in 1949 for £273 and was home to three generations of the same family, is situated on a lovely 834sq m elevated block within walking distance of the beach, shops and schools – making it perfect for families. It’s like a living museum complete with retro furniture, carpets and wallpaper, while the established

fruit trees create a magnificent canopy over the existing gardens. There’s a classic Hills Hoist in the backyard that is hydro-powered. Simply turn the tap on and water from the property’s bore raises the Hills Hoist; turn the tap back and the water will fill the buckets and the Hills Hoist lowers. You’ve never seen anything like it.

Unlike others in the market, DCB’s shutters are truly custom made, designed and hand-crafted specifically to fit your window, door or alcove dimensions. An ideal choice for the coastal weather, plantation shutters offer great thermal insulation, allowing you to open louvres to stream light into rooms and close to insulate, offering a more energy-efficient home through all seasons. Plantation shutters are also the ultimate low-maintenance window covering; an occasional quick wipe down will keep them clean. Dust does not collect on shutters in the same manner it does on fabric, making them perfect for those who suffer from allergies, want to avoid dusty environments or looking for an easy-to-use solution for their windows.
