For the past nine years a Frankston couple have been shining a little light into the lives of children with special needs. It all started 17 years ago, when Trevor and Sandra put up four Christmas motifs and a few strands of lights on their house at 1 Lulworth Place. As the display grew – from the front of the property to the carport and fernery, backyard and second storey – so did the number of people coming to check it out. So nine years ago they decided put out a donation tin; they don’t charge admission but thought they could help out a charity or deserving organisation, and eventually they settled on the Frankston Special Developmental School. “Two years prior a lovely man, the late Rudi Geppert, who was the PE teacher at the school, knocked on the front door and asked if we’d mind if he brought a couple of busloads of the children around, and we were absolutely over the moon to have them here,” www.franklyfrankston.com.au
Trevor said. “So when we still hadn’t organised who we were going to collect money for, we went round to the school and spoke to the principal and within two hours they’d arranged a collection tin for us, a laminated letter to put on the tin to say who the money was for, they bent over backwards to help us.”
charge them to process the donations, and Big W Karingal assists by selling the lollipops Trevor and Sandra buy for the children who visit the display at cost price. Trevor and Sandra don’t count how many people wander through the display each year, but last year they gave away 4500 lollipops.
Since then they have raised close to $25,500 for the school, only requesting that it be used for projects the school would otherwise be unable to fund. In 2012 the school was able to put on its own Olympics and invited Trevor and Sandra along as the Olympic King and Queen. The money raised last year was used to fund the 2016 school concert. FSDS principal Scott Tucker gave Trevor and Sandra front-row seats. “It is just absolutely mind blowing what those teachers and support staff do for those kids,” Trevor said. “It was really hard to sit there and not get a tear in your eye.”
The display, which is insured for $40,000 and adds $400 to the household power bill, starts going up in the first week of October and is turned on at 8.30pm on December 1. “Early in the month we turn it off at 10.30, but as it gets closer to Christmas - especially weekends - we’re on until 11pm or later, depending on whether people are here.
The Commonwealth Bank in Karingal does not
“We do this not for ourselves – this is for the community and more importantly for the kids – that’s what this is all about.” Mr Tucker described Trevor and Sandra as “heroes of the Frankston community”. “They do not ask for anything in return. They’re stars.” DECEMBER/JANUARY 2017

Poles positioned Eight new poles have been installed along the Dreaming Trail at the George Pentland Botanic Gardens in Frankston. The ironbark poles, replacing ones that had succumbed to weather and white ants, tell the Boonwurrung people’s story of the Mornington Peninsula’s creation: “A long time ago, Bunjil the eagle asked Mindi the snake to help create the land. Mindi was the one that created the rivers and valleys and now she lays waiting beneath the Peninsula. The Mindi path is a reminder that creation is precious and that we must respect and care for mother earth.” Photos: Mark Calleja

Glenn Cooper has always been a “mad fisherman” – it was the one thing his otherwise dysfunctional family did together. Whenever he found himself in a dark place, it brought him relief – and now he’s sharing its benefits with others. For the past two years, Glenn, his mate Brian Rowley and a group of about 25 volunteers who make up That’s The Thing About Fishing have spent most days sharing their passion for fishing with kids and adults doing it tough. During school holidays they run clinics for families at no cost. All the gear has either been donated or bought through Glenn’s disability pension, with only the occasional small grant along the way, but the changes Glenn has seen in people’s lives have made the “long, hard slog” in getting this far worth it. Before arriving in Frankston in 1985, Glenn’s life was one of family violence, institutions, alcohol and crime. He found comfort in the church, got married and worked in high management jobs before turning to security work, but in 2006 he was attacked by three drunks and ended up with a severely broken ankle that nine operations couldn’t put right. Glenn “lived on nothing” for six months awaiting a disability pension. His only relief came when his carer dropped him off at Frankston pier, where he’d sit in his wheelchair and fish. Later he founded Oz Fish TV and hosted a fishing show www.franklyfrankston.com.au
on RPP FM called That’s The Thing About Fishing With Guru Glenn (he earned the nickname after once catching 33 snapper off Mornington pier). “I said to Brian one day, ‘Hey listen, why don’t we do a kids’ fishing clinic?’. So we did on Frankston pier, but the wind was up, it was a shocking day and we had two kids turn up – and one of them was Brian’s son.”
TTTAF has come a long way from that modest beginning. To date this year it has held almost 300 clinics for more than 3500 people from such organisations as Connecting Skills, HeadSpace, Mental Illness Fellowship, Mentis Assist, Neami Frankston, the Bunjilwarra Koori Youth Alcohol and Drug Healing Service, and disability groups around Melbourne and as far as Gippsland. Autistic children have shown significant behavioural improvements; men battling depression are getting their lives back on track. “We’re not saying fishing is the be-all and end-all, but it opens up social skills,” Glenn said. “Fishing completely changes their lives, one life at a time.” For more information, go to www.facebook.com/ TTTAF DECEMBER/JANUARY 2017

Strong, passionate and hardworking – celebrating Woodleigh’s Class of 2016 “We’d like to thank our parents for choosing to send us to this amazing school, our close friends for the banter, and the entire Woodleigh staff who make this school the unique and inspiring environment it is.” Romy Lipszyc and Nixie-Claire Lepore – 2016 Woodleigh Prize Winners. At our recent Valedictory Ceremony and Dinner, we celebrated the efforts and achievements of the Woodleigh School Class of 2016. Our graduating class are an exceptional group – as varied in their talents and interests as they will be in their paths beyond the school. A group of true individuals, who leave the safe confines of Woodleigh ready for the excitement and challenge that further study, travel and work present. In her Valedictory speech, Woodleigh Prize Winner Nixie Lepore described Woodleigh as, “A school that does not just preach respect, but demonstrates and inspires its students to sincerely practise it. As a result, strong, passionate, independent, hardworking and kind leaders emerge.” These qualities – strength, passion, independence, kindness and hard work – these are the attributes that will deliver success, happiness and prosperity to students after they leave our care. And these are the leaders our world needs today and in the future.

Home is where the heart is Fred Harrison is a Peninsula boy through and through. He has lived in Frankston and Mount Eliza for 50 of his 59 years, and when he and his wife recently moved house – downsizing after two of their three sons had left home – they chose to stay here. “We could have moved out of Mount Eliza and gone to another part of the Peninsula or even closer to the city. (But) when we bought this house we committed to live in Mount Eliza for at least the next five or 10 years. I just love the area.” The Ritchies IGA chief executive points to the relaxed atmosphere, the beach, the leafiness of the suburb and “the fact that people who decide to live here usually do so for a purpose – they tend to be more familyfocused, they tend to be more sports-centric”. Certainly sport has played a major part in Fred’s life – he actually wanted to become a professional tennis player – and in the lives of his boys, who all played footy and cricket here. “It’s just a great lifestyle and fun place to live. My only disappointment is I work long hours so I don’t get to see them play a lot, but that’s all part of the www.franklyfrankston.com.au
business we’re in.” To that end it will be back to work after spending Christmas Day and Boxing Day with family and friends. “I’ll probably have a week off in January (but) it’s a busy time of year for us. I’ll be on deck for a fair part.” That commitment to work is one of the “points of difference” he says helps keep Ritchies in the game against the might of Woolworths, Coles, Costco and Aldi. “The fact that we’ve been able to grow from humble beginnings to 80 supermarkets and liquor stores I think is a credit to the intelligence of our business but also very much to the people in the business. We’re up against it versus the chains, so you’ve just got to accept that you have to work longer and harder, and that’s a fair commitment and sacrifice by a lot of people in our business. We’ve got hundreds of our team who give over and above the call of duty.” Another point of difference is Ritchies’ enormously successful Community Benefit program. Launched in the 1990s, it has seen $46.5 million donated to more than 5000 clubs, schools and charities. Ultimately, though, Ritchies needs to be pricecompetitive – and is. “When it comes to milk, people expect us to have $2 milk; when it comes to $8 barbecue chickens they expect us to have $8 barbecue chickens. So there is an expectation that we have to be competitive and we pride ourselves that we are. You can’t be uncompetitive in pricing these days – you will just not survive.” DECEMBER/JANUARY 2017

Nerf enthusiasts on the Peninsula have been invited to take up arms against the zombie hordes. McCrae musician Eddie J Fury and his 12-year-old son, Wolfie, have launched a Facebook page to gauge interest in organising HVZ - human versus zombie - tag battles after Wolfie recently took part in one in Melbourne. “Lots of people had a lot of fun in the city but there were no organised Nerf wars down on the Mornington Peninsula, so I decided to make one so then people will have something to do,” Wolfie says. “I’m a lot of the time on my iPad, and it’s just good to get some exercise. And it’s fun, so then I have a reason to modify my Nerf blasters.” HVZ “is pretty much gang-up tiggy with Nerf blasters”,
( 10
Wolfie says. “Four people start off as zombies. If you’re a zombie you have to get all humans by tagging them with your hands or a pool noodle. A match is 20 minutes long but we’ll end any time when all humans have been tagged. Zombies gain power-ups during the match; for example, five minutes in, zombies get a pool noodle to extend their reach; 10 minutes in they get a riot shield to block darts; 15 minutes in they get a grenade (a soft foam ball) so the zombies have a projectile, and if you get hit, you’re a zombie.” If the interest is there, the first match could be staged during the summer holidays. It’s likely to be at a park, with a barbecue to follow. There’s pretty much no age restriction because there will be adult supervision, but Wolfie does warn that the foam darts do hurt a bit when they hit. Safety glasses
must also be worn when playing. Since his son got interested in Nerf wars, Eddie says he’s discovered a whole Nerf subculture; while you can pick up a blaster for $20-$30, some enthusiasts spend hundreds on modifications and the tools needed to do so. Wolfie got his first Nerf blaster when he was six or seven; he estimates he now has about 10. For a 20-minute match he’ll carry two – a sidearm and a primary. But the main requirement, he says, is good footwear. “It doesn’t matter about the Nerf blasters; it’s the shoes, because you’ll always be running a lot.” Anyone who’s interested can check out facebook. com/groups/346850278988760/

Almost five years on the school is preparing to welcome 700 students from ELC to Year 12 in 2017. Principal Vicki Steer said the event would be a chance for everyone who had been involved in the college’s growth to celebrate.

“The story of the foundation of Cornish College is one of community persistence and vision,” Ms Steer said. “Our school thrives today because of our community’s belief in our educational philosophy of preparing students for life. We recognise the importance of academic rigour, creativity and developing strong foundation skills for learning.” Despite the growth in student numbers, Cornish
College is still a medium-sized co-educational school where students are known and learning is personalised and engaging. Cornish College’s motto is “Make a Difference” and at its core is the development of independence, compassion and personal excellence in order for students to make a positive contribution within their community and globally. Lifesavers ready for action While many of us will be relaxing in the sun over ChristmasNew Year, the Frankston Life Saving Club will be gearing up for summer with a range of programs for young and old – as well as keeping us safe at the beach. The Nippers Surf Education Program is for youngsters aged 5-14 and leads to the Surf Rescue Certificate or Junior Bronze award. It’s on every week from now until Easter, and other social and training events are held throughout winter. First aid training, aquatic safety awards and other professional development and leadership opportunities are available to members. Lifesaving competitions usually involve running, swimming and events on boards to keep lifesavers fit for the services they provide. The foreshore will be patrolled by volunteer lifesavers most weekends and public holidays between now and April. Lifesavers can be recognised by their red and yellow uniform and are only on duty when the red and yellow flags are displayed. The club, which was formed in 1923,

Fashion designer rides wave of success April Hewat has always had a creative mind. Even as a “typical lipstick tomboy” growing up on a farm in Carrum Downs, she “thought constantly about new ideas for this or that”.
After travelling around Australia, Europe and the US, April returned home with a desire to design swimwear, knowing she needed to find her own niche in this extremely competitive market. The “eureka” moment came at 3 o’clock one cold morning: “I jumped out of bed and ran into my little farm office and scanned in a postcard of a beach on my little outdated bubble jet printer, then ironed it on to a white bikini pant - and I knew that was it.” She found a company in Denmark that had the machine she needed to professionally print photographic images on to fabric, and the world was now her canvas.

In 2007 April launched her label – April Marie Swimwear - at the inaugural Australian Swim Fashion Week on the Gold Coast. It was a “mindblowing experience” and was followed by a show at the Rosemount Australian Fashion Week in Sydney in 2009. Now employing the extraordinary talents of Melbourne photographer Rebecca Le Souef and Frankston model Monique Wardley,
April gained valuable exposure in Vogue Australia and Cleo magazines, her leopard print featuring on Vogue’s cover. In 2011 she slowed down her production and concentrated selling online while she had her three children in the space of four years, but next season she is producing some amazing structured bikini tops and one-pieces as well as skirts and dresses. “Celebrities, parties, catwalk shows and trade shows can entice you to become completely wrapped up in this world of glamour and fashion, but I soon discovered that it’s just not me. I keep my socialising in this world to a minimum and I look to our beautiful Mornington Peninsula for all public events and location shoots and really try to convey that you don’t have to live in Milan, Sydney or Paris to produce a stunning international label when the talent is right here under your nose.” You can check out April’s stunning range at aprilmarieswimwear.com.au

James Rees is coming back to where it all began. When he takes the stage at Frankston Arts Centre later this month, the man better known to thousands of Aussie kids as Jimmy Giggle will be revisiting his old stamping ground for a second time. “When I came back to Frankston a couple of years ago (with Giggle & Hoot), nostalgia hit me right in the face. I thought ‘Wow, this is where I first performed in a Peninsula School production and now my name’s on the door’.” James was born in Frankston and was 18 months old when his family moved to Mount Eliza. He went to St Thomas More, then Padua College for a year before following his older brother, Tom, to Peninsula. “I think it shaped a lot of what I do now. I loved playing sports and got into the drama too.” James’s love of performing began early. “Dad filmed us a lot. He had a little camcorder and loved to take videos of all the family at Christmas time and all that, and sure enough me and Tom were planted right in front of it for the majority of it. And Dad encouraged it. We’d act out little plays and puppet shows, and he nurtured that creativity in us from a young age.”
( 20
However, he credits his wife, Tori, for giving him “the kick up the bum” he needed to turn his passion into a career. They met when they were both working at the Canadian Bay Hotel in Mount Eliza. “She said, ‘Well, if that’s what you want to do, you’ve got to pull your finger out and just go for it’.” His chance came almost immediately – in 2009 the ABC was auditioning for its new children’s channel ABC3; while he didn’t make the final round, James’s audition reel was handed to the casting director for a new kids’ show called Giggle & Hoot. “I never looked back. I was prepared to have a little bit part in a little drama and that’s it. It was like, ‘Wow, this is awesome!’ “The character of Jimmy Giggle was a spin-off of my personality, really. I kept adding things, and I was free to add things if it fitted that character. If I’ve got a new idea (I can say to the producers) ‘Well, Jimmy Giggle would do that because it’s me.” Seven years on, Giggle & Hoot shows no signs of slowing down, which suits James just fine. “I love doing it and all the things that come with it. It’s really sweet; it makes kids happy. I do have other aspirations but at the moment I’m not thinking about that. I love the show too much. I’m having a great time and I’m just riding the wave.” Giggle & Hoot’s Magical Christmas is at Frankston Arts Centre on Monday, December 19, at 11am and 1pm. Details: 9784 1060/ thefac.com.au

Mr. Frank’s Café is situated on the upper level of the South East Water building, and its floor-to-ceiling windows offer panoramic views over Kananook Creek and across Port Phillip Bay. This water’s-edge setting helps give the café a relaxed ambience, making it the perfect place to meet for business or just get together with family and friends. The comprehensive menu ranges from sweet and savoury pastries, sandwiches and rolls – including a
delicious pulled pork, slaw, cheese and mayo combination – through to more substantial meals, such as pumpkin soup and arancini. There is also a large variety of cakes, including gluten-free options, to enjoy with your rich, full-bodied Monte coffee or one of the stunning range of black, green and herbal teas. Catering is also available. Mr. Frank’s Cafe is open Monday to Friday from 7am-4pm. MR. FRANK’S CAFÉ A: South East Water building (upper level), 101 Wells St, Frankston T: 9783 9764

Looking cool for summer Total Face Group has the solution for a better beach body this summer – CoolSculpting. CoolSculpting is a non-invasive, clinically-proven treatment that permanently eliminates areas of stubborn fat with no needles or downtime. Essentially it freezes fat cells in the body, causing them to die and resulting in permanent fat removal from those hard to improve areas such as tummy, flanks, inner and outer thighs, love handles, double chin, arms and bra fat.
5km & 10 km Trail Run/Walk Skate/Scooter/BMX Comps
“CoolSculpting has brought a new way for men and women to reshape their bodies without the invasive procedures,” said Total Face Group Managing Director and CEO Jo Hannah. “With CoolSculpting
we are able to deliver a fast, effective and safe fat-removal service that is unrivalled for speed and comfort. Equally popular with men and women of all ages, CoolSculpting is delivering excellent results for those who through genetics, lifestyle or age factors cannot shift those stubborn bulges. “Whilst it can take up to 12 weeks for the fat cells to die and be eliminated from the body, many of our clients see results in as little as three weeks, meaning you may be bikini and board-short ready right in time for Christmas and definitely by the summer holidays.” TOTAL FACE GROUP A: 1050 Nepean Highway, Mornington T: 9552 6277 W: totalfacegroup.com.au/peninsula/

Musicians unite aZz one World music fans will be able to enjoy an international band in an intimate cabaret setting when Frankston Arts Centre presents aZzband at its Black Box theatrette at Cube 37. Uniting musicians from Italy, Venezuela, Spain, Australia and Germany, aZzband interprets and mixes the music of the world, from jazz to tarantella, tango to fanfare, Uruguayan candombe to Argentine Murga. The ensemble uses the improvisation of jazz, attempting nonetheless to stimulate the emotions and imaginations of any type of audience, including one not entirely formed of music connoisseurs. That’s why this is not a classic jazz band but an “azz” band, the missing “j” revealing an added quality, one that allows greater freedom of execution, and avoids the group “anchoring”

itself to any particular musical genre. The performance on Wednesday, January 25 at 8pm will be preceded at 6pm by a one-hour world percussion workshop by aZzBand’s Yonder Rodriguez. Percussion instruments from around the globe will be on show and some instruments will be provided, but you’re encouraged to bring your own if possible. The workshop costs $20, or $15 with an aZzband ticket ($25 for members/concession, $30 for adults). The concert is supported by the Consulate-General of Spain in Melbourne. The summer holidays present the perfect opportunity for everyone to catch up on some reading after the distractions of work and school, and Frankston’s libraries have a series of programs to engage and entertain readers of all ages. The Summer Reading Club is inviting young readers to unleash their imaginations and discover heroes, villains, sidekicks and more during Be The Hero. Be The Villain (now until January 31). As well as lots of online and in-library activities, author and illustrator Craig Smith will be the guest for the finale in January. Continuing with the Heroes and Villains theme, the libraries’ summer holiday program from January 9-25 will include storytime sessions, craft activities, a puppet show, active games, and more. Bookings are essential from December 19. And you’ll be able to explore the magical world of book illustration during the Story Island exhibition

at Frankston Library from December 20-February 4. The free exhibition is ideal for children up to 8 and features a selection of beautiful illustrations reproduced from the Scholastic Dromkeen Children’s Literature Collection at State Library Victoria. Meanwhile, older readers are invited to take the Top 50 Staff Picks for Summer challenge. Library staff have chosen their top 50 reads, and your challenge is to read as many of their picks as you can between now and January 31 then enter a competition for a chance to win fantastic prizes. During the challenge, author Fiona Wood will be speaking at Frankston Library. Join PLOS for the limited season of Wicked, which opens on New Year’s Eve at Frankston Arts Centre. Tickets are available for all shows but they are selling quickly, and this is one production you don’t want to miss.
PLOS is thrilled to welcome back to the company Nadia Gianinotti as the green-skinned character Elphaba. Nadia played the title role in Mary Poppins last year and was Morticia during PLOS’s season of The Addams Family. All-round nice character Galinda, who during the story becomes Glinda the good witch, will float on to the stage and is played by company newcomer Britni Leslie, who brings a wealth of previous stage experience to the role. Wicked has something for the whole family, and PLOS is once again putting its technical team to the test to create many magical ways to stage this timeless tale. The result will be truly magical.

This year has flown by and we’ve suddenly hit December. It’s now time to set aside a day or two to reflect on how your business has performed in 2016, as well as a strategy for a bigger and better 2017. If you can’t block out a whole day or two, break it down it into three-hour blocks. Here’s a few tips for what to think about and questions to ask yourself: 1. What have been my biggest achievements this year? 2. Why did they work? 3. What hasn’t worked well for my business this year? 4. Why hasn’t it worked? 5. What could I have done differently for a better result? Next, ask yourself ‘What do I want to achieve in the new year?’ And then break it down into quarters and set three goals per quarter, one big goal per month.
Think about these goals now: 1. Why do I want to achieve these? 2. How will I achieve these? 3. What action can I take each week, to contribute towards achieving my quarterly goals? 4. How will I measure my progress? 5. How will I reward myself for achieving each quarter’s goals? Goal setting and planning should be fun! Grab some A3 paper and map out each quarter. Use different coloured markers or post-its for different types of goals, for instance: sales metrics (product/service package), revenue and/or profit goals, number of customers/clients, brand awareness/marketing, etc. When setting goals for yourself, make sure they are SMART: specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, time-bound. Enjoy the process!

Delicatessan • Cafe • Grocery Lucky and Nella are back! Newsflash!
Lucky and Nella Ferraro have returned to Lucky’s Deli + Café in Young St, Frankston. This much-loved husband and wife, who established the gourmet deli in the early 1980s and managed it together for 24 years, have taken over the reins after a 10-year hiatus. Frankston, this is wonderful news. Lucky and Nella are passionate about Frankston, quality produce and excellent service. They are bursting with fresh ideas, new stock and a passion to return Lucky’s to its heyday. There’s a connection here that links back to Lucky and Nella’s history as immigrants in the 1970s. “We migrated to this country in the late www.franklyfrankston.com.au
1970s from Italy and all we had was hand luggage made from cardboard,” Lucky explains. “Frankston adopted us. Frankston has been very good to us. We brought up two kids here and now we are back and hopefully Lucky’s Deli will prosper again.” The goal at Lucky’s Deli + Café is to provide great tasting food without “those crazy high prices”. Think beautiful cheeses, olives, stuffed peppers, spices, pastas, breads, cooking ingredients from exotic places and much, much more. Dumplings to die for Several years ago, Amanda and Hayden Thatcher were sitting in a gyoza bar in Tokyo enjoying the Japanese dumplings over a couple of sakes when it occurred to them there could be a market for the dumplings back home. Having “basically roughed out the concept on a napkin”, the pair returned to Australia, found a warehouse in Seaford and turned it into Mushiki Dumplings. Four years on they employ six people and supply gyoza to outlets throughout Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula and regional Victoria as well as NSW, South Australia and Queensland. “We both have a foodie background – I’m a food technologist and Hayden’s a chef – so we had a good idea of what was on the market and we knew there was a gap for fresh gyoza,” Amanda said.

“We started off doing a couple of markets, making the gyoza and taking them to markets, cooking them and selling them. Luckily enough one of our customers worked at a retail store and said ‘Your product’s really good; do
you have packs?’ We quickly got some together, came back and presented them to her and she took them all immediately.” The dumplings come in six flavours, including duck and plum, free-range pork and prawn, free-range chicken and shiitake, and vegetable and tofu; the ingredients are all Australian, the meat is ethically sourced and no MSG, colours or flavours are added. Since the opening of Peninsula Link in January 2013 a snowball effect has been building on the Peninsula Property Market, with record low interest rates and escalating prices in Melbourne Metro and Bayside areas. The opening of Pensinula Link allowed buyers who would not have considered the commute, a chance to take a second look at our region. A long time popular holiday destination has become a place to live & work…. not just play. In Oct–Dec quarter of 2015 65% of sales in the 3199 postcode were houses as opposed to units with 252 properties for sale, in Jan–Mar 2016 that figure rose to 73% with 213 for sale, April-June 2016 93% with a very low 160 for sale and July–Sept 98% of sales were houses with only 172 properties on market. *Statistics provided by eview quarterly postcode book 3199 What does this mean for you? We are in a vendors market, with competitive buyers coming from Bayside and Metro suburbs looking for houses and stock is low. If you are selling, there is no better time than now. Whether upsizing, downsizing or consolidating investment portfolio, timing and process are everything to get you the best results. If you are buying, get your finances in order so you are ready to offer and be bold for the property you want. Auctions are more prevalent and properties are getting sold off-market. We are seeing multiple offers on properties, so ask the agent for guidance on the sales process for each property, so you know how, what and when to offer. Want more information? DCB’s Alpha Awnings are also proved to significantly reduce cooling energy costs by keeping a standard home at a consistent and comfortable temperature throughout the summer months. Independent tests have shown that they offer energy cost reductions of up to 58 per cent. The side retention system is worth a special mention. It is an inspired way of adding an extra room to your home. The fabric is tensioned using a floating channel preventing fabric blowouts or light gaps. With the fabric secured between the left and right channels, this system is ideal for enclosing courtyards, patios or balconies. Pool safety reminder
Frankston residents and property owners are being reminded to make sure their pools and spas are properly fenced in the lead-up to summer. Frankston City Council is offering free inspections of pools and spas to ensure they meet all safety requirements and has an ongoing program of random inspections of swimming pool and spa fences and barriers. According to KidSafe Victoria, 11 of the 21 children under 5 who drowned in Australia in 2015-16 died in a backyard pool, and in many cases the pool fence or barrier was faulty or did not comply with regulations. If you’re unsure whether your pool or spa area meets all safety requirements, phone 1300 322 322 to arrange a free inspection.
