Every month, dozens of keen gardeners gather at a Frankston café to share their bounty with others. The Frankston Food Swap grew out of the annual Frankston Community Food Festival, a month-long series of workshops dedicated to helping residents grow, produce and cook their own food. Last year’s festival included a food swap, and the interest it generated helped sow the seed for the Frankston Food Swap. The food swap is held on the second Saturday of every month (except January) at Coffee on Kareela, a not-for-profit café run by St Luke’s Anglican Church and staffed by volunteers. It draws 15-20 people on average, and group member Sally Taylor says anyone is welcome to bring along any excess produce they have and swap it for something they need; any leftover www.franklyfrankston.com.au

produce is taken to Food Is Free. (see page 4) “At the first swap we had someone bring along a collection of macadamia nuts from their tree; basically it’s whatever’s in season – lemons, rhubarb, herbs. We have a small planning team that gets together to organise demonstrations at each swap, such as making mustard from mustard seeds, preserving, or making sourdough bread. “There’s a garden at the back of the café so if someone doesn’t have anything to swap, but they might have ideas or experience they can pass on, they can take something from the garden. We do encourage people to bring something along though. “Some of the people who come along are regular swappers, and we do get some newcomers too.” The next food swap is on Saturday, November 12, from 1-2pm at 53 Kareela Rd. A young boy with a big heart is helping families in Frankston put fresh, healthy food on the table – for free. Mel Hutchins and her son, Noah, had always given away any excess garden produce they grew. But when Noah, who was 10, saw a TV news item about a Food Is Free program in Ballarat, he wanted to make things “official”. “Whenever we’d had anything to spare we’d sit it out the front of the house in a bucket or he’d take it into school and give it to his teachers or his schoolmates. He’s always been very sharing. When he saw the news he said, ‘Mum, can we do that here?’ So we went and got

some old pallets and banged together a couple of tables and put them out the front.” That was about a year ago, and Noah’s little project has grown in leaps and bounds since then. “We made a Facebook page and let everyone know it was there. People leave comments and sometimes there’s little notes left in the letterbox, which has been really nice as well. If we’re out there ourselves, people always stop and have a chat, and Noah loves that - he loves gardening and seeing people when they come by and either leave some of their garden produce or to pick up something kindly left by another. He has a really big heart.” Anyone with excess garden produce is welcome to add it to Noah’s tables. FOOD IS FREE A: 13 O’Grady Ave, Frankston FB: facebook.com/foodisfreeFrankston/

Creativity and critical thinking essential skills for today’s learners “At Woodleigh School, we encourage students to step off the production line, push the boundaries of expression and respond in interesting and different ways to the challenges they face in the world,” says principal Jonathan Walter.

in 10 or 20 years’ time. What we do know, however, is that as our learning and workplace landscapes change, the human capacity to be creative, to solve problems and think analytically will only grow in importance.”

“From the play and inquiry-based programs in our Early Learning Centres at our Minimbah and Penbank Campuses, through to the VCE years at Woodleigh Campus, ours is an environment that supports original, creative thought and focuses on the development of increasingly complex and sophisticated processes of thinking.

Meanwhile, Woodleigh’s director of community relations, Adam Liddiard, has some advice for Year 12s about to sit exams: study hard, but not so hard that everything else suffers.

“Throughout the curriculum at Woodleigh, learning tasks are designed to elicit the highest level of creative thinking from our students. Students are encouraged to tackle problems and investigations in innovative ways, to challenge and test theories and engage in the process of pushing their own boundaries to break through to deeper levels of understanding. “No one can predict the details of what the students of today will need to know

“Remember to eat and rest well, to keep up the water, to take breaks to stretch or surf, to have a dance or play with the dog. “Seek help when you require it, offer help when you see (or sense) it is needed. Take time to celebrate the things you have achieved already, with the understanding that there is still plenty to be done. “And don’t forget - when you’re in the exam room and you’re ready and raring to go, read the question. Read the question. Then, read the question again. “Best wishes to all and thank you for the memories.”

Encore! Encore! Year 12 student Holly Heron wowed three soldout audiences with her stunning performance as Audrey in Woodleigh School’s production of Little Shop of Horrors.

Company gets the Ball rolling

Leading horticulture company Ball Australia is moving to Skye as part of a $15 million expansion of its production nursery and distribution business. The company has secured a $350,000 State Government grant to support the move, which is expected to be completed by mid-2017 and will include the construction of a production centre and office complex on a 20ha site on the corner of Hall Rd and Westernport Highway. The privately-owned Keysborough site it has occupied since 1998 will be sold. The move is expected to create up to 19 new jobs with the company over the next five years, potentially including 12

( 8

retrenched automotive workers in the first 18 months, and as many as 100 construction jobs. Ball Australia’s managing director, Paul Boland, said: “The move comes at a time of rapid growth for the amenity horticulture sector, and we want to be there to support this growth. “What Ball Australia will bring to Melbourne’s southeast as well as the overall Australian horticulture industry is opportunity, jobs, improved marketing and promotion of plant products plus a continuance of bringing gardening into consumers’ lifestyles.” The new site will feature advanced equipment including germination chambers, growing and mother stock facilities and hitech environmental controls.

Our resident populations of sun-loving copperheads and tiger snakes are out and about again after another winter, and that means clearing shrubs, bushes, wood piles and other hiding places from around the house if you want to avoid an encounter. “The snakes need a place to hide and feel safe,” says Mornington snake catcher Barry Goldsmith, “so if you remove those hiding places there’s less chance of encountering a snake. No snake has bitten someone unless it was disturbed first - we’re not on their menu.” Killing the snake shouldn’t even be a consideration. “I just want people to know it’s cruel, it’s not necessary, it’s illegal, and there are snake catchers all over the place who can be at your place to remove the thing within an hour.” It’s also dangerous – most people are bitten while trying to kill the reptile. Barry’s been catching and removing snakes for about 40 years. “It’s more of a pastime or a hobby – I just like to be the person people ring as opposed to killing it.” If you find a snake, call Barry on 5975 0481 or 0408 067 062.

Helping hands for the homeless When Deniz Marchmont’s daughter, Narece, burst into tears at the plight of Melbourne’s homeless, both knew they had to do something to help. By chance they came across a YouTube video featuring people crocheting mats out of cut-up plastic shopping bags, and the Facebook group Plastic Bag Sleeping Mats For The Homeless was born. “I have a friend, Indi, who was living on the street and that got the spark started,” says Deniz, a registered nurse from Sandhurst. “We had a weekend in the city for Narece’s birthday and she was quite confronted by the homeless situation. She burst into tears and said ‘You’ve got to do something, Mum; this is insane what’s happening’. So we came home, did some research, came across the video and put the Facebook group together.” That was in April. The group now has 1500 members from across the Peninsula and as far away as Queensland, from school students to retirees. Between them they collect the bags, cut them into strips, loop the strips together to make plastic yarn – or plarn – and crochet the plarn into mats, which are then handed out to the homeless through the Port Melbourne-based charity Anonymous X. It takes 600-700 plastic bags and about 40 hours to make one mat, but it can literally mean the difference between life and death. Indi has spent 16 weeks in hospital with third-degree pressure sores on his spine from sleeping rough; other homeless people have fared even worse. “How can someone close to my heart suffer like that when having one of my mats could have saved him from that,” Deniz says. “People think we’re just trying to make homeless people more comfortable - no, we’re saving people’s lives.” One of the first to join the group was Lilly Guglielmino, of Frankston, who has become Deniz’s 2IC. “As soon as I saw (the group) I thought I have to join it,” Lilly says. “It just really touched my soul.” Anyone is welcome to join the group. Its Facebook page has videos on how to cut the shopping bags into strips, tie them together to create plarn and crochet the plarn into mats, but your involvement can be as simple as collecting the bags. Choir’s Carnegie coup From Leonard Bernstein to The Beatles, New York’s Carnegie Hall has hosted some of the biggest names in music. In three months the Mornington Peninsula Chorale will join them. The choir has been invited to take part in a performance of Welsh musician and composer Karl Jenkins’ Requiem on January 15 as part of Distinguished Concerts International New York City’s Concert Series. Fifty-one of the choir’s 100 members will spend seven days and eight nights in New York, performing at Carnegie Hall and in a church in Manhattan, in what choir convenor Judi McKee says will be a once-in-alifetime experience. The choir has performed several of Jenkins’ works in the past after seeking his permission to do so, and Judi believes he probably put the choir’s name forward for the Requiem performance. “We received a call from DCINY inviting us to audition for the performance – Carnegie Hall is very discerning about the quality of performances. Our audition was fantastic – we performed an excerpt from Felix Mendelsohn’s

( 14

Elijah under the banner of choir director Tom Buchanan, which we sang earlier this year. An audio-visual contractor filmed the performance, which was sent to DCINY and they were impressed.” DCINY artistic director and principal conductor Dr Jonathan Griffith described the choir as “wonderful musicians deserving of the community’s recognition and support”. Judi says each choir member will have to find a “bare minimum” of $4500, which includes rehearsal costs as well as travel and accommodation expenses, but it’s an experience that far outrivals anything in the choir’s 30-plus-year history. “To walk in the steps of some of those famous singers who have performed at Carnegie Hall will be incredible.” Karl Jenkins found fame as a member of the highly influential jazz-rock ensemble Soft Machine before releasing a string of vocalisestyle albums, movie scores, and compositions for the likes of Kiri Te Kanawa and the London Symphony Orchestra. He received the OBE in 2005 for services to music. To donate to the choir’s expenses, visit australianculturalfund.org.au/ projects/mornington-peninsulachorale-new-york-tour/

In the heart of summer there are a few things we can’t get enough of, and music festivals are definitely on top of the list. On Saturday, February 4, the heart of Mt Eliza Village is where you and your friends can gather and enjoy the Mt Eliza Music Festival. The event takes place throughout the village - in cafes and restaurants, three outdoor stages and eight busking locations, where more than 70 musical acts will perform. Expect bands, soloists, DJs, family entertainment, buskers and much more, day and night. Among those already confirmed are Josh Cashman, Reuben Stone, the beautiful Thando Sikwila (the 23-year-old from The Voice) and the major musical production Dreamgirls. More performers will be announced over the coming months. The Zimbabwean Thando moved to Melbourne only five years ago from Canberra to pursue her career and passion. “It’s the feeling of making a genuine difference in someone’s life and seeing people through tough times and celebrating the great ones,” Thando says. “I’m lucky to be a performer and experience bringing that kind of joy to people.” Thando has never been to the Peninsula and is looking forward to experiencing a new part of Victoria. “And of course to perform; you guys can expect an energetic set reminiscent of Aretha-style belts, a sassy backing vocal section and a groovy band that plays for the gods. You’ll find it hard not to bop along with us.” The Mt Eliza Musical Festival kicks off from noon and entry is free. More at mtelizamusicfestival.com www.franklyfrankston.com.au

Hamish hits top gear One of the bright young stars of Australian motorsport has just added to his already impressive list of achievements. Hamish Hardeman took out the 2016 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge with a win and two seconds at Phillip Island in the final round of the 18-race series on September 10-11. It follows his open-wheel Formula Ford wins in the Victoria and South Australia state championships in 2013 and his fifth place in 2014 in the national championships. The 23-year-old Rosebud carpenter’s journey began as a 10-year-old accompanying his dad on car club outings; at 15 he got a CAMS licence so he could drive his dad’s car on the track; at 17 the “bit of fun” turned serious when he bought a Porsche 944 and began racing. “It’s a long way to get to where I am today, but it’s kind of like that in motorsport - if you’re brought up lacking the funds to go racing it always makes it a challenge. I’m always chasing sponsorships to make it happen. I was able to get a couple of sponsors behind me this year to see the rest of the year out, which was good. “(My parents) have poured their heart and soul into it, but it’s got to the point where this year was the last year they could fund it. Working’s just a part of being able to pay for it all – the end goal is to be able to take the nailbag off and be a professional driver somewhere. Next year I’ll stay in Australia and try to race in the Porsche Carrera Cup – a few ex-V8 Supercar drivers come back to Carrera Cup so I could be racing Steven Richards, Craig Baird and Alex Davison. Hopefully I do a good enough job that I’m able to prove myself and a team from V8s or Europe are interested in having me as a driver. “My personal goal is to be able to race overseas in Europe and do the world endurance championship – that’s what Mark Webber’s doing at the moment – but if not and it all goes in a different direction, V8 Supercars would be a good category to be in.” PICTURED: Hamish with fellow drivers Shane Barwood (Class B) and Tim Miles (Elite Class); Hamish powers around the track (photo: Anthony Gilbertson)

The company won the Custom Built Home ($700,000-$1 million), Best Bathroom, Best New Kitchen and Kitchen of the Year categories for a three-bedroom house it designed and built in Mornington. The family of a little Frankston girl is hoping to raise awareness of the rare disease that has kept her in hospital for the past two months. Six-month-old Layla suffers from biliary atresia, which affects one in 18,000 Australian new-borns each year and results in bile becoming trapped in the liver, culminating in liver failure. Layla was diagnosed with the disease at seven weeks and a week later underwent an operation to join her bowel to her liver so the bile could drain away. However, the operation was unsuccessful and she remains in the Royal Children’s Hospital awaiting a transplant.

Her father, Andrew Saxon, said Layla needed to get to 8kg so there was more chance of finding a donor. Layla’s grandfather, Terry Saxon, said Andrew and his partner, Aleisha, had been overwhelmed by the support shown by friends, well-wishers and groups such as the Southern Districts Rugby Club, and urged people to contact DonateLife and consider becoming organ donors. Andrew also thanked friend Meg Ward, “who has been a massive support in setting up a gofundme and also setting up a mini auction to help raise funds for Layla”. You can follow Layla’s progress on facebook.com/ laylasfightwithBA/?fref=ts

Registered architects and urban designers have been invited to create their vision for the new Frankston station. The State Government has launched a national design competition in two stages: initially, entrants will be asked to anonymously propose a “big picture” vision for the station. Up to five entrants will then be invited to take part in stage two of the competition, each receiving $40,000 to further develop their designs. The winner will be engaged as the project architect for the first phase of the $90 million station redevelopment. A judging panel “will be looking for an intelligent, sensitive and highly functional design”, the competition brief states. “The successful design will (be) one that is both architecturally ambitious and intelligently frugal.” Entries for stage one close on November 18; all entries will be exhibited from November 28-December 9. Shortlisted entrants for stage two will be announced on December 13, and the winner will be announced on March 27 next year. Frankston residents have been urged to have their say on the removal of level crossings on the Frankston line. Frankston City Council chief executive Dennis Hovenden said it was vital that the residents along the rail corridor provided feedback to the Level Crossing Removal Authority on the options being considered for the line. The community consultation period will close on October 30 and the new council will meet after that to discuss the design options and provide feedback. The council has previously supported running the line underground at Seaford Rd in Seaford and Skye/Overton Rd in Frankston; however, it wants the Eel Race Rd crossing in Seaford retained and the money that would have been spent on its removal redirected to other public transport needs in Frankston. Courses cater to all abilities

Whether you’re looking to arrange a team celebration or a company gala dinner this festive season, the Moonah Links Resort can offer decadent dining and packages to suit every event type.

The Open Course is the first ever 18 holes built and prepared for a national championship, with exceptional viewing platforms for spectators. It was the venue for the 2003 Australian Open and is one of the longest courses in Australia - and probably in the world - in this category.

With 75 accommodation rooms and group rates you can create an end of year celebration to remember at the Moonah Links Resort.

In contrast to the Open Course, which was purpose-built to challenge, the Legends Course is a more friendly golfing experience for players of all ages and abilities. The course is a loop of 18 holes that generally follow the valleys through a variety of landscapes ranging from ancient Moonah woodlands to open links land.

Enjoy wine tasting from the Peninsula Region, Championship golf or relax at the on-site day spa.

The Moonah Links Resort consists of two Championship courses - the Open Course and the Legends Course.

BY LIZ ROGERS

Lisa Medhurst is lively, lovely and smart, smart, smart. Her business, Lisa’s Lacies Plus Size Lingerie, is a rip-roaring success and not only because her garments are pretty, seductive and fit to form, but because they are made with the understanding that not every woman is (or wants to be) a size 10. Lisa’s Lacies is for real women who want to look and feel gorgeous – think bras (including maternity, sports and plunge), lingerie (camisoles and corsets), briefs, sleepwear and the Lisa’s Lacies clothing label just for starters. Lisa began unpicking bras and learning how to make patterns from home 21 years ago. The rest is Australian garment production success history. Hard work and focus has seen Lisa’s Lacies grow tenfold. Her shop floor in Seaford is about 1500sq m and Lisa has just signed the deal of a lifetime with the Double Divas’ Brilliant Bras for Beautiful Women brand in the US. She already exports to Asia, the UK and the States.

( 28

“It’s very exciting; Double Divas will begin stocking Lisa’s Lacies in over 100 of their Livi Rae stores across America in 2017. Next year is going to be big. I am back in Dallas in February, so stay tuned for an update then,” she explains. With about 90 awards for business – including Woman of the Year – and receiving an export grant from Frankston City Council in 2015, this business powerhouse still finds time to give back to the community. Lisa’s Lacies collects donated second-hand bras and forwards them to the Uplift Fiji Project, which distributes them to the local ladies. It is also at the forefront of mastectomy bra fittings. “We have a separate private pink and gold room where clients can feel safe and cared for,” says Lisa, who also devotes her time to several other charities. It would seem that what goes around comes around - and that’s what taking care of business is really all about, isn’t it? Peninsula Aquatic Recreation Centre staff are stepping it up as the centre becomes the first in Australia to ensure all fitness staff hold a Certificate of Nutrition in addition to their exercise qualifications. PARC health and fitness manager Dan Andrews believes that sound health and wellbeing advice should be readily available to the Frankston community. “By providing free, qualified nutrition advice for members, our new program is not only extremely beneficial but also accessible,” Dan says. “We’ve invested in state-ofthe-art equipment, including medical-grade

body composition scales that take the guesswork out of weight losses or gains.” The centre’s gym will also get a revamp, now offering high-intensity team interval training classes. Called POWERZONE 30, these classes will see people perform a 30-minute program using state-of-theart equipment, including the individual MYZONE fitness-tracking system. The Girl On The Train Showing at Hoyts, Wells St, Frankston Adapted from Paula Hawkins’ bestseller, The Girl On the Train is a psychological thriller framed against three (interlocked and overlapping) female protagonists. Emily Blunt plays Rachel, a lonely woman whose life has collapsed since the end of her marriage. We watch as depression and substance abuse have her spiralling out of control. Every day on her commute she watches Megan and fantasises about the apparent stranger’s seemingly perfect life, two doors down from the home Rachel shared with her ex-husband Tom, who is now living there with Anna.

( 34

Despite director Tate Taylor’s choppy point of view shifts, Blunt’s commitment to her role elevates the material; the slow burn reveals the cause of her addiction to be both inner and outer torment. Successfully shifting the geographical location of the source novel from a London Midland commuter train to upstate New York, it may be Gone Girl lite, yet still worth a look. “I was always told to ‘come back down to earth’, or ‘stop daydreaming’, as I’ve always had my mind or spirit in the non-physical world,” she says. “And so the title of this show is all about my two distinctive styles - of the physical world of earthly landscapes where I’m inspired by nature, and the ethereal non-physical world where I paint my abstracts and am inspired by quantum physics and the metaphysical.” Marion was a naturopath who treated such celebrities as George

Foreman. She had clinics in Sydney and Melbourne, wrote a few books, had health columns, a radio show and even a racehorse, then she had an epiphany and gave it all away to move to Mt Martha and paint. After 10 years, with her art now selling internationally and her name becoming known in art circles, Marion feels she’s only getting warmed up and that the best is yet to come. One thing is for sure, though she wouldn’t be doing anything else. Living in Two Worlds is at the Frankston Arts Centre until December 10. Rock’n’Roll and Rockabilly Dances Retro Market Beach Party Classic Cars & Rods Pin Up Competition Drive In Movies

With Rosebud’s long history as a great place to enjoy summer beach holidays, what better place to revive the fun-filled ‘50s and ‘60s lifestyle? This new festival, Foreshore RockFest, will run over three days from November 25-27 and will involve a series of different music, dance, movie, car and vintage shopping events. In its first year, all activity will be based in Rosebud.

www.foreshorerockfest.com.au ( 36

The fun starts on Friday evening with a beach party in the Rosebud Scout Hall. A new show added to the program is the Mark Andrews Legends Show at GPO Hotel from 7pm. Mark is a renowned Elvis impersonator and his show will focus on Elvis, Austen Powers and Tom Jones, among others. On Saturday morning the town centre will rock with hot rod and ‘chrome bumper’ cars on show, ‘50s performers and dancers along the footpath and a ‘50s and ‘60s market running at Rosebud Primary School. The market will include clothing, food, DJs, live bands and dance demonstrations, with a gold

coin entry. The vintage shops in town will pump with music, fashion and bargains while the cinema will feature a classic Audrey Hepburn movie. Saturday evening will provide fans of the ‘50s and ‘60s with multiple dance venues hosting live bands, including the Lincolns, Fender Benders and Honey B and the Stingers, along with a special Elvis double feature at the Dromana 3 Drive-In. Sunday will see a pre-1970s hot rod and classic car show on the Village Green, featuring hundreds of cars and vintage caravans, with live music. For the fashionistas from the era, a vintage clothing and ‘pin up’ contest will also be held in the Memorial Hall next to the car show. The market will continue at the Rosebud Primary School on Sunday from 10am. All events will culminate at 3pm. Tickets are available online and are essential for many events. Don’t delay because they are selling out rapidly. For tickets and full details, check out foreshorerockfest.com.au or Facebook Foreshore Rockfest.

Peninsula artists will share their insights into mental illness at the 2016 Mental Health Week Peninsula Art Exhibition. Presented by Mentis Assist, the exhibition runs until Saturday, October 22, at Frankston’s Cube 37 and showcases the work of artists with a lived experience of mental illness, including carers and family members. For Peter Fanton, whose painting Justified and Ancient (pictured) won best artwork at last year’s exhibition, art is “a means by which I bring into focus that which matters to me. In terms of recovery and my wellness strategies, art allows me to connect and express my values and what has meaning to me”. The exhibition is about more than just art, however. It is about the importance of community support in breaking down stigmas and enabling people to access the treatment and care they need to manage and recover from their illness. In the Frankston/Mornington Peninsula area there are higher levels of mental health than the www.franklyfrankston.com.au

Mitchell Torre Real Estate was founded in 1996 and since then has gone from strength to strength.

Anyone who is drawn to the water will be right at home at Patterson Lakes – but there’s so much more to the suburb than its wonderful waterways. Its 7600 residents include families who adore its mix of excellent schools, health centres, parks and reserves, and sport and recreation facilities; and retirees who value the suburb’s peace and quiet. Patterson River itself, which was constructed in 1878, and the network of canals offer not only excellent access to Port Phillip Bay, they also provide a resort-like waterfront lifestyle similar to what you might find on the Gold Coast. The restaurants and shops are among the best on the Peninsula, and Carrum station and EastLink allow ready access to the CBD. Patterson Lakes also found fame as Fountain Lakes, the fictional setting for the TV series Kath & Kim.

With its main office located in the prime position of Patterson Lakes’ shopping centre, the company’s focus is always on its vendors, landlords, buyers and tenants. “We pride ourselves on mature, friendly and professional service,” says Director Steve Torre. “We have the largest rental portfolio in the area, servicing Bayside and surrounding areas, and we have four very experienced and professional portfolio managers, ensuring you get the best and most current practices, software systems and advice on current legislation.” Experience the Mitchell Torre difference. A passion for food and a love of the community have led business partners Sharad Patel and Vipul Patel to Crust Pizza in Patterson Lakes. Vipul had risen through the ranks from pizza maker to store manager in Melbourne when he approached Sharad to join the Crust Pizza franchise, and the pair opened their Harbour Plaza store in November 2011.

“I have a background in food engineering, and when Vipul approached me I was looking to get into a food business,” Sharad says. “We wanted a brand that was community-based, astute with a long-term business plan and that offered value for money, so Crust Pizza was an easy choice.” With Vipul already living in Carrum, the choice of Patterson Lakes was also an easy one. “We like to give back to the community,” Sharad says. It’s an exciting time for both the franchisees and the company as a whole. The Patterson Lakes store will soon hopefully add its name to the list of stores now licensed to deliver alcohol with your home-delivered pizza. Adding to this exciting news, Crust is introducing three new pizza options to its gourmet offer in the coming weeks, including a delicious vegan pizza! Look out for the new menu in your letterbox soon. The company recently smashed the Guinness Book of World Records, for the World’s Longest Dessert Pizza with a 46.6m whopper, during the Crust Pizza conference on the Gold Coast. Don’t forget to sign up as a Crust VIPP (Very Important Pizza Person) – if you live within the store’s delivery area, you’ll receive free delivery every time you order online as well as exclusive offers. SkillsPlus was very easy Education to deal & Train across metropolitan and re with and I got to speak with someone straight away. Damian sat down with me and listened to what I needed.” “We listen to local businesses and help them find candidates that are ready to work,” said Damian from SkillsPlus. “We also provide a range of supports when employers like Tuscan Trellis Specialist Painting employ a new staff member through us.” Rodney was looking for someone willing to learn and who already had artistic abilities. It was also important to him that the person was respectful and humble. Damian recommended Bensen because he knew Bensen had the right attitude and skills. Bensen had been unemployed for three or four years and was struggling to find a job. He is excited about his new job and is currently saving up money to buy his first car.

Rodney recently needed to hire a new employee, but hiring new staff can have a tremendous impact on a small business because it takes time and money to find the right candidate. As Rodney was thinking about how to go about finding the right candidate, he coincidentally came across SkillsPlus. “I was on my way somewhere and was grabbing a coffee. I was parked outside of SkillsPlus in Frankston

“I have already recommended SkillsPlus to other people I know,” Rodney said. “Bensen has shown real initiative and is committed to his job. I also really enjoy having input on the work from someone young who sees things with different eyes.” SKILLSPLUS A: 31 Playne Street, Frankston T: 9784 0400 W: www.skillsplus.com.au

Bayside Grout Solutions owner/operator Jorg talks about leaking showers and some of their causes. A shower recess is one of the most used and harshly treated parts of the house - in some cases it will be used four to eight times a day, especially in summer and on sports days. It is then subjected to harsh chemicals and constant moisture. This causes the grout and the silicone to become weak. If not maintained properly it will cause the recess eventually to leak into its surrounds. Sure signs of this are damaged door frames, plaster boards and wet carpets adjoining the bathroom’s shower. In some cases, showers leak due to poor installation

and ill-fitting screens as well. So why not have the shower recess serviced just like you do a car by giving it a full ‘rejuvenation’? This means replacing the grout and all the seals, polishing all surfaces so the shower gleams again like new and gives you many years of use again. All this can be done in most cases in a day and your shower is back in action 36 hours later for a fraction of the cost of a full replacement. For a free no-obligation quote, phone Jorg on 0424 843 358. BAYSIDE GROUT SOLUTIONS A: Somerville T: 0424 843 358
