BY KATE SEARS but as she prepares to embark on her second tour of the US her heart still beats for Melbourne. She explains that in her opinion Melbourne has some of the best and most unique talent in the world, She’s been with her vocal coach and but the Australian community could do a mentor David Jaanz for about 10 years better job of supporting the homegrown and was lucky enough to grow up as a talent in our own backyard. Instead, as kid under his unique training methods a collective, Australians are so heavily that included emotion-centred singing, influenced by the international markets. which built the foundations of gospel

and improvisation. This was opposed to learning the standard classical training methods that focus on technique and scales.

With her signature purple hair and a voice that gives you goosebumps, Fatai is certainly someone who catches your attention and holds it. Watch her videos and you’ll understand what we mean. Her soulful voice lends itself perfectly to genres such as soul, gospel and r’n’b, but Fatai also enjoys the complexity of jazz. “The purple hair signifies royalty,” she says. “It represents who I am as a child of God before anything else.” This spirited young lady would spend her summers at Mordialloc beach with her family where her creative juices flowed as smoothly as a refreshing drink on a hot day. “Nature speaks to me like nothing else. I’m always inspired by what the ocean has to say to me through the waves about life and its unpredictable ways of crashing on you when you least expect it.” Chicago is now her physical home, www.franklyfrankston.com.au

“Uniqueness is power, and we need to realise this, recognise it and take risks once in a while.”

Music is both a portal for self-expression as well a tool to tell stories. In that respect she draws inspiration from her own journey - from painful experiences to joyful moments - to inspire her music. This she believes is the connecting point for the listener when they are able to relate to the situation that the artist sings about. Fatai’s belief in this is so concrete that she prefers to not listen to music for inspiration, instead gaining creativeness from the life happening around her. “Life speaks to me when I’m living in it, and not listening to it through headphones.” As she applies her passion in the studio working on a single that should be out before the end of the year, she added some fantastic advice for our Frankly Frankston readers: “Just be you. Work hard but stay humble. Use your voice to make a positive change, and remember that music is always bigger than you.” AUGUST 2017

He was six months old when Suzie fostered him. He’d been bred to be a ‘teacup’ dog, which can command huge prices for their breeders. Suzie stresses you should only go to a registered dog breeder, and even then it’s vital to confirm they are ethical. ‘Adopt, don’t shop’ is always the better and more rewarding option. To achieve a ‘teacup’ dog, generally dogs with different genetic issues are inbred, creating tiny dogs that may look super cute but come with a plethora of health problems. Poor Charlie suffered from hydrocephalus and encephalitis, and the vet even suspected chiari malformation. As a result he’s unable to handle heat, and the pressure in his brain quickly builds up and causes issues with his spine and back legs, which in turn causes him to overheat quickly. He’s been a strong little man and undergone a lot of physio to improve the strength in his back legs, but he still endures a heart murmur and severe dry eye. It’s sad that the original owners

Suzie has lost count of how many dogs she has fostered but guesses it would be more than 50 by now. She’s been involved in rescuing dogs, assisted several rescue groups with grooming severely neglected dogs, fostered and adopted dogs, and has taken on the role of palliative fostering, which is both heartbreaking and rewarding. So, without further ado, let’s meet Charlie!

es life to the Max didn’t want him because he wasn’t perfect. Even though Charlie is fully grown he’s only the size of Suzie’s chihuahua, but he’s perfect for her son, Max. The pair have the absolute sweetest natures and are inseparable. Charlie’s relaxed nature means he hasn’t been stressed out by the typical toddler behaviour and he just thrives on the attention Max loves giving him. Max looks after his best friend and makes sure Charlie is kept cool at all times, and Charlie can sense when Max is sad or unwell and curls up next to him on the bed and stays there all night. “I have taught Max from a very young age how to be gentle with the dogs and how to interact with them,” says Suzie. Although the two look like butter wouldn’t melt in their mouths, they do get up to mischief. “Charlie is always following Max around because Max has learnt how to get to the dog treats. He sneaks into the cupboard and gets them out. But if I bust him he just tells me that ‘Charlie’s tummy was rumbling’. “Max’s favourite thing to do is to ride his trike while holding on to a tub with wheels that Charlie sits in, and he says he is taking him for a drive. And if there’s water or mud in the backyard, you can rest assured they will find it.” Charlie will always have his health challenges, but with Max looking out for him, he’s in good hands! HQ a hub for KWD HQ is a new chapter in the life of Kate Walker and her professional design team. With entrepreneurial skills in her DNA, Kate sees opportunities and seizes them with both hands, and the concept of KWD HQ evolved from a desire to showcase how much KWD itself has evolved and grown since it was founded in 2013. “Many designers subscribe to and specialise in one style,” explains Kate. “However, our desire, expertise and experience lend themselves to much more than just one design style. We work with such a variety of clients from all walks of life and in so many different locations that our portfolio has embraced a wide selection of different aesthetics. It was essential that our new headquarters reflect this, and the

innovation result is a more masculine feel that will appeal to our rather large male client base.” Kate engaged Carlo Romanin, of Romanin Design (who is also a local), to direct the design for KWD HQ, and Mount Martha Village was the ideal location. Everything in KWD HQ is based on black, white and grey tones (other than the timber flooring) to enable the products to shine. The granite, marble, the black carpet and the European oak flooring are all from KWD’s supply partners. It’s a collaborative space with an interactive peg display board at the central core of the product development area. KWD HQ is a hub for innovation, and the ergonomic space has been designed for inspiration and efficiency. The exciting new KWD HQ premises is providing inspiration to other local businesses too, with KWD being engaged to manage the refurbishment of Volpino and Wallimont & Nutt Real Estate – taking Mount Martha Village to new heights in terms of quality, style and design.

Igniting the dream-catchers Poet William Yeats once wrote: “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” For 143 years Toorak College has been achieving excellence and inspiring the lives of its students. Thousands of girls have graduated from the stunning Mornington Peninsula landmark with its iconic Hamilton Building and Cloisters. Toorak graduates share stories of how they emerged from their school years with a sense of honesty of themselves and belonging to a community that values them without question. These bonds of belonging connect them as Toorak Collegians for life. Principal Kristy Kendall says she wants students and graduates to chase their dreams. “The bigger the dream, the better. We encourage all students to find their passions, identify their strengths and to make the most of their Toorak College experience. With the right encouragement and confidence in their own abilities, our students will leave the school believing that they can do anything.” Two alumni of the school have done just that. When Sonya Fiddes (TC ‘07) was growing up she had no idea that Earth Science was a career option. Sonya liked science, so after graduating from Toorak College she completed a Bachelor of Science at the University of Melbourne. “It was when I was at uni that I realised atmospheric/climate science was actually something you could study, and was really interesting to me as it was an application of all the fundamental sciences you learn in physics, chemistry and maths.” She went on to complete a Masters in Science, majoring in Atmospheric Science, also at University of Melbourne. Sonya has worked at the university and Bureau

of Meteorology researching climate extremes and using climate models to project Victoria’s stream flows out to 2100. She is now undertaking a PhD and is investigating whether the Great Barrier Reef has an impact on the local climate. Megan Goodwin (TC ’05) always had a passion for music and now works in the music therapy

profession. “At Toorak I immersed myself in orchestra, concert band and jazz. I also enjoyed psychology, so being able to combine these two areas in the one career was perfect,” she says. With the support of her teachers, Megan was accepted into a Bachelor of Music at the Conservatorium of Music at Melbourne University. “I majored in percussion, as well as psychology, before specialising in music therapy.” After graduating, Megan worked as the paediatric and adolescent music therapist at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, where she remains today, in addition to developing and delivering therapy programs at The Bays Aged Care facility in Hastings. “After presenting on the use of music technology in paediatric radiation oncology at the Australian Music Therapy Association conference, I was asked to take on a position within the International Music & Medicine Foundation – a worldwide foundation and journal supporting the use of music as medicine,” she says. Megan’s involvement with the AMTA has seen the development of early education music therapy programs and aged care programs. She is also involved in the use of music therapy in children’s homes for paediatric brain cancer patients. Toorak College has announced a range of scholarships for 2019 and is receiving applications from girls who want to chase their dreams. Julianne’s Bittern the Big Apple BY KATE SEARS As the token Australian in the Great Big Story team, Julianne Wilkinson is the producer from Bittern making it big in Manhattan. While a Bachelor of Film and Digital Media from Deakin University and a Certificate of Documentary Video Production from RMIT set her on her way, Julianne credits her Year 12 media class at Padua Mornington as a major influence on her career. “While working on my VCE media film it really hit that this was what I wanted to do for my career,” she says. “I wanted to make film. I found myself staying back after school and trying to get my edit just perfect, and that was when I realised it didn’t just feel like a class I needed to pass for my VCE, and it didn’t feel like work, which is the best kind of job to have.” Great Big Story was founded as a social video network in 2015. It makes short documentaries about incredible people and places and releases two or three new videos a week on social media. As a producer, Julianne is responsible for pitching, filming and editing. GBS started with a dozen staff and has grown to a team of more than 40. Its motto is ‘Tell me something I don’t know; show me something I’ve never seen’. That being said, her team endeavours to focus on the unknown and the curious while concentrating on creating beautifully made video productions. They’re adamant that social media platforms deserve as much effort and quality put into their videos as larger scale productions do, since these platforms tend to be the most accessed place to watch short videos. “It’s an exciting time to be at the company and we’re fortunate to have a corporate parent (CNN) that has such

( 10

high hopes for us,” Julianne says. “I have had the opportunity to meet so many incredible people and see parts of America I would never have visited otherwise. I’ve seen more rural towns of America than I’m sure a lot of Americans have.” Previous work as the assistant editor for Broadway Video gained her experience in working with such highprofile clients as CNN, CBS, NBC, Comedy Central, VH1, MTV and Tidal. This followed her promotion from a receptionist’s role and internship there previously. Freelance

positions in Australia for Not Half Bad Productions, All My Friends Productions and Theatrepeople gave her the encouragement to take the leap of faith over to The Big Apple. “While I was studying at Deakin University I did a semester exchange to Hunter College in New York in 2011 and, like a lot of people, instantly feel in love with the city. I was really attracted to the amount of opportunity there is here to work in the film and digital media space and how different platforms for video were being embraced in a way I wasn’t seeing yet

in Australia.” Having settled into Manhattan after moving from Brooklyn (and ultimately the sleepy beach town of Bittern), Julianne misses our coffee. “I’d do just about anything for a latte from Local Café in Hastings and a walk on the beach right now,” she told Frankly Frankston as her home town caffeine cravings became real. The noise and pace of Manhattan matches her days at work, but she relishes the time she’s on the road filming because it becomes her entire focus, instead of balancing

several projects at various stages of production in the office. “Mine and GBS’s biggest fan is ultimately my mum,” Julianne says. “She comments on every post.” And finally, Julianne has some advice for anyone contemplating following her lead: “If you’ve recently graduated in a creative degree, do not be disheartened by the lack of opportunity or jobs and get out there and create your own. Make your own web show, film your own videos, put on your own play - don’t wait for someone to hire you.”

Ben Comelli, founder of How old were you when you founded the Tempo Group? I founded The Tempo Group in my early 20s (Ben is now 34), growing the business to where it is today. 2017 is a significant year for me (and The Group) marking Tempo’s 10th anniversary. I feel like the journey has just begun and we have some exciting time ahead. That’s quite young. Did you always want to own your own business? Yes, I did. I commenced as a labourer in Rosebud and immediately knew I liked the building game. I was accepted into an adult apprenticeship, qualified and then pursued project management. It was a grassroots start, but this hands-on experience has been paramount to the growth of my business. Remind us about The Tempo Group’s mission. Our mission is to create highend homes for clients looking for something beyond the ordinary. We have more than 10 years’ experience building luxury homes on the Peninsula. We understand the landscape. There are challenges with different blocks and we understand

those challenges. We are very projectspecific. Please describe Tempo in a couple of words? Innovation, Custom, Lifestyle, Flexible What’s your style? Relaxed. Our family is big on lifestyle. I also appreciate quality and beautiful finishes. A home has to be functional as well as an extension of yourself and the life you live. We are big on entertaining with family, extended family and friends. We live our life around a central indoor/outdoor entertaining area with barbecue, kids in the pool and a lot of fun. Where can we see Tempo’s builds? You can see our projects across the Mornington Peninsula, from Mornington to Mount Martha, Mount Eliza, Balnarring and Sorrento and also in St Kilda, Clifton Hill and Geelong. Are you a local? Yes, my entire family is. I was born and bred on the Peninsula, and I live in Mount Eliza surrounded by friends and family. What do you love doing on the Peninsula when not at work? Trekking with a white knight BY KATE SEARS Mathew Kerr is walking with passion in his step. He’s taking on the Kokoda Track Memorial Walk (1000 Steps) weekly in the Dandenong Ranges - twice in one visit, might we add - and hiking every weekend. But this isn’t just for the health benefits. This man is on a mission and wants other men to join him. Don’t worry, boys, you can leave your fitness gear hidden under the bed. He’s just after your voice. “Violence against women impacts every Australian, so regardless of gender we all need to speak up and let those who continue to think that violence against women is acceptable that it is not and that we are not going to remain silent any longer,” Mathew says. White Ribbon Australia is the world’s largest movement of men and boys working to end men’s violence against women and girls, promoting gender equality, healthy relationships and a new vision of masculinity. To spike interest and inspire discussion among blokes’ families and friends, Mathew’s set himself the goal of completing the White Ribbon ‘trek4respect’ in September. A mission for sponsors is important, but he’s passionate about bringing the issue into the light and into everyone’s conversations. “Violence against women isn’t a private problem, it’s a public problem.”

( 14

To spark the conversation, his fundraising efforts have included a sizzling sausage stall, but he can’t wait to hit the road and take on the mental and physical challenge. Mathew’s eager to meet other like-minded people on the trek and share their passion as they work together to not only complete the trek and reach remote communities, but spread the word. His need to start the discussion stems from working for 12 years in the welfare community sector. Having worked directly with families in welfare, he’s seen firsthand how violence against women affects women and children. Mathew is the general manager of services at Statewide Autistic Services Inc. in Frankston, where he’s appreciative of his colleagues’ support. Mathew’s passion is twofold: he believes prevention is key, specifically what can be done to influence societal norms; and he believes it’s men’s responsibility as a collective to help this cause. “From research and statistics it’s predominately more common for the men to commit the offence. As a gender, we need to stand up and not accept it. The movement starts in our social circles; it needs to be addressed to bring about equality.” To spread the word or support the cause, Mathew asks you to please visit: trek4respect.everydayhero.com/au/ mathew-kerr Everything we love about Frankston, fresh every month

Frankly Speaking with Tia Wishart BY YAZMINE LOMAX

Tia Wishart loves all things outdoors. The Frankston South resident’s passion for fitness began “at birth” and, encouraged by the local landscape, shows no signs of stopping. What are your favourite places to run, climb and surf? We are so lucky to have the Two Bays Trail right on our doorstep. If I really want a hard session, I will do hill reps of Arthurs Seat under the chairlift, or if I want to cruise, running along the foreshore from Safety Beach to Rye at sunset is one of life’s simple pleasures. I’m definitely not hardcore about (surfing) but I have so much fun when I head out around Point Leo and Flinders. Climbing is the one thing the Peninsula lacks, so every second weekend I make the five-hour drive to Mount Arapiles. In between trips you will find me training at Bayside Rock in Carrum Downs.

What activities are coming up? I’m heading over to Colorado and Utah in August to run and climb. I’m also training for my first ultramarathon in October along the Surf Coast. Mainly I just take it all as it comes; I’m so in love with the sports I do that I don’t find I need goals to stay motivated, but having a big event or project on the horizon definitely helps to keep the spirits high.

Why do you love where you live and how does it inspire you? A key thing I love is that everyone you come across on a hike, run or ride will smile and say hello

to you. My love of running has definitely been encouraged by living so close to amazing trails; the same goes for mountain biking. On the flip side, I

don’t let the lack of rock face stop me; I’m always happy to travel to do the things I love, and always happy to come home after a trip away.

Hundreds lap it up at Chelsea parkrun One year on and the global fitness phenomenon known as ‘parkrun’ continues to draw crowds each weekend to Chelsea’s Bicentennial Park.

in summer to 270. For some it’s a social outing with the dog; for others it’s a physical outlet for some mental space.

Chelsea parkrun is a 5km timed event that winds its way along sections of the Longbeach Trail, with vistas of the low-lying wetlands against the rising 8am sun, before reaching the end of the loop at Patterson River. Thousands of courses like Bicentennial Park exist around the world, and at Chelsea an average of 200 people participate in the weekly health ritual, with numbers heating up

Event director Peta Wragg provides a warm welcome for runners, walkers and people gathering just before the parkrun’s 8am start, and describes the volunteer event as inclusive of all capabilities. “It’s a run, not a race, and we have walkers, people pushing prams, people with dogs, and we have fast runners as well,” she says.

( 18

Kingston councillor Tamsin Bearsley was

instrumental in the establishment of the first course in the City of Kingston. She and Mrs Wragg established contact with one another, and a year on, parkrun is celebrating its first birthday at Chelsea’s Bicentennial Park. Cr Bearsley believes the social aspect of the event is one of the reasons parkrun has been a real hit. ‘Hold their hand, relieve their pain’ Palliative care is an area of health care that is difficult for many people to talk about or even consider, let alone work in. That’s not the case for Dr Sandeep Bhagat (pictured), Peninsula Health’s new Head of Unit for Palliative Care. “When I had my first exposure to palliative care, that’s where I found the meaning of being a doctor is more than just doing stitches or doing tests,”

loved again. I think all these basic human values attracted me to this speciality.” Dr Bhagat places a high value on the team members who care for people nearing the end of their days. “We have over 100 years of experience so we’ve got very experienced senior nurses. It is a small team, close-knit, so we sit together, we hand over better, we support each other better, and I

Leading the team, Dr Bhagat espouses a positive attitude to the role that he and his fellow nurses and doctors can play in the lives of patients and their families. “Palliative care most people relate to dying, whereas I relate it to life, quality of life, whatever remaining life that is. That is my way of separating it from the sad part of dying. Most people would say death is very sad. I see before death there is a big phase which is their completion of exploring their spirituality, trying to bring a meaning to them and their family.

“The other way of looking at it as far as my own coping is the patient never dies; they are now living in the memories of their loved one. If I can leave families with a better experience in their bereavement, and they have watched their loved one dying in peace and dignity, that is how we get the compliments and thanks, and that is what drives you to keep doing what you’re doing every day.” For more information about Peninsula Health’s Palliative Care Service, phone 9784 7232.

Grooming for all breeds! Gentle, friendly & “pawsitive”! Dr Bhagat said. “It’s actually sitting with people and having the honour to hear first-hand stories, hold their hand, relieve their pain, and make them feel www.franklyfrankston.com.au

Do you get ‘hangry’? Do you need that daily coffee fix? Meet Shien and Pieter, who get ‘hangry’ if they don’t complete their daily swim just off Frankston beach. As they make their way from the

boardwalk to the jetty and back, the couple get a few strange looks from dog walkers and anglers alike. That’s to be expected when they emerge from the thrashing waves in the middle of winter without wetsuits to protect them from the bitter cold. Shien says she and Pieter enjoy

the feel of the water on their skin, allowing them to truly interact with their surroundings. “You get to soak it all up if you’re not rugged up in a wetsuit,” she says. The only insulation they use is a cap made of wetsuit material to avoid brain freezes.

of the water or the cold, just a slight aversion to seaweed. Shien and Pieter occasionally see dolphins and rays, and it’s also become a habit to pick up rubbish on the beach as they head down to their spot with their three dogs.

“I just gotta have my fix,” Shien says. “I know it sounds a little mad, but if I don’t swim I don’t feel right. I feel more relaxed after I’ve been in, and I can think clearly afterwards.”

Shien prefers long-distance swims, which have included Lake Argyle in the Kimberleys, the Rottnest Channel Swim, and the Bloody Big Swim from Frankston to Mornington. With Pieter paddling alongside her in a kayak and supplying her with snacks and water, Shien says she’s extremely lucky to have a partner who loves the water as much as she does.

Shien and Pieter have always swum and it’s been their daily ritual since 2005, when they met as members of the Dendy Icebergers in Brighton, swimming each morning rain, hail or shine. “I did pool training every morning as I grew up but only started swimming properly in the ocean 15 years ago as I lived next to the beach in Brighton and felt I had to utilise it,” says Pieter. So after swimming off Frankston every day for the past two and a half years, have they managed to create a local equivalent of the Dendy Icebergers? “No, no, it’s just us,” says Pieter. These two crazy cats have no fear www.franklyfrankston.com.au

“I swim long distances because I can. I love it; I end up meditating and zoning out.” Shien is thinking about her next wave of challenges, including swimming down the Mornington Peninsula, crossing Cook Strait between New Zealand’s North and South islands, and swimming the 70km Queen Charlotte Track in the Marlborough Sounds. “I’m a water baby,” she says. “It’s my happy place.”

BY KATE SEARS

Meet Scott Norton. By day, he’s a devoted dad who commutes from Mornington to Port Melbourne for work at a printing company. But in the eerie pre-dawn hours, when most of us are still blissfully sleeping, Scott enters another world – The Otherworld – in his guise as teen fiction author S.B. Norton … and that’s where the magic happens. From 5am until 6.15am every week day, Scott immerses himself in the world of the Operatives, whose mission it is to rid a parallel universe known as The Severed Plane of the warlocks and wizards that control three of its four quadrants and who prey on human kind. These quadrants provide the settings for the three (and soon to be four) novels in his Otherworldly Operatives series: Flames from the North, Southern Vexations, and White Eyed Children of the East, which he’s launching at a Meet the Author event at Farrell’s

( 22

his books’ presence on social media and in the minds of teenagers world-wide. With lots of adventure, these horror fantasy novels appeal to 10-14-year-olds (he often visits schools to meet his young fans) but have found devotees among much older readers too.

Book Shop next month. At weekends he’s able to devote a little more time to The Otherworldly Operatives, and that’s something he relishes. “It’s quite exhausting. But I needed a creative outlet, and it’s great for my own escapism as I have a very vivid imagination.” Scott has been a self-published author since 2014. With no support team besides his family and friends, he has written, edited, designed, promoted, distributed and established

Saturday, September 16, at 3pm, where he’ll be more than happy to sign copies of his books. Perhaps in blood, we’re not too sure … INSTA: @s.b.norton FB: @theotherworldlyoperatives W: sbnortonhome.wordpress.com

With one more book in the works to complete the series, he’s relishing the traction he’s establishing overseas. His protagonists come from all over the world and represent a variety of ages, so his novels have wide appeal. Readers respond well to these strong characters as they travel through corridors from this world to The Otherworld and fight to save human kind from being kidnapped by The Severed Plane dwellers. “The suburb that my main protagonist lives in was inspired by Mornington, Dromana, Cowes and Phillip Island,” says Scott. The tales of warlocks and witches include some scary bits that keep the young readers interested and are quite dark at times, but there’s an underlying humorous tone throughout the collection. WOMEN’S LUNCHEON Wednesday 6th September 2017 at 11.30-2.30pm

Keeping track of our friendly faces BY YAZMINE LOMAX Frankston City Council’s Faces of Frankston project gained wheels in July when portraits of some of our best-known residents adorned Metro trains. The friendly faces of teachers, business owners, city officials and those we pass around town every day were plastered on the walls of the carriages. The unique idea aims to educate passengers about the passionate and diverse people who live in our city and highlight the current era of investment and redevelopment. Commuters who were lucky enough to hop on a Frankston line train on the afternoon of July 27 were treated to an all-out celebration of our industrious city. they were also able to follow in the footsteps of Oprah, Heath Ledger, the Dalai Lama and many more celebrities who’ve had selfies taken with world-renowned photographer Richard Simpkin. “It was amazing,” Ben said of the event. “I thoroughly enjoyed jamming on the train and sharing my music with everyone.” Faces of Frankston combines portraits from Richard’s exhibition Locals of Frankston (currently showing at the Frankston Arts Centre until October 21), VicRoads’ Business as Usual promotion and Chisholm TAFE’s Building a Bright Future initiative. So next time you get off the train at Station St, why not take the time to chat with some of the vibrant folk who give Frankston its heart?

Frankston musos snap to the GRID

The Peninsula’s Moody Spooks perform at the Pelly Bar in Frankston during last year’s GRID Series.

For every great musical act enjoying the limelight of success, there are thousands that bubble below the surface just waiting for their big chance. While it’s never been easier to write, record and publish things yourself, many artists will never have the opportunity to develop their talents in a professional, nurturing yet challenging environment. Enter the latest instalment of the GRID Series. GRID Series 2017 is an artist development program that equips musicians with the essential skills and recorded material to create a sustainable career in the music industry. This year’s

series, supported by Creative Victoria, will be focusing on developing artists from Frankston, the Mornington Peninsula and the outer southeastern region of Melbourne, home to some of the most exciting emerging talent in Victoria. Eight artists will be selected to take part in a free, three-month intensive program that includes a full weekend of mentoring with music industry professionals at Music Victoria; songwriting development sessions; recording/ production/mixing/mastering of one track for each of the eight artists courtesy of El Perro Productions and video content courtesy of Baked Goods; and

Atomic Blonde 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road made an unlikely action star of Charlize Theron, and her ice-queen performance here in Atomic Blonde further solidifies Theron as being more than capable of such roles. Adapted from the graphic novel The Coldest City, Atomic Blonde sees director David Leitch serving up some of the most brutal hyperstylised violence available to us on screen today. It’s set in 1989 during the last days of the Berlin Wall. Theron plays MI6 operative Lorraine Broughton, who’s sent to investigate the murder of a fellow agent and retrieve a

live shows at Frankston’s Pelly Bar, the Ferntree Gully Hotel and ALH Group venues. GRID 2017, supported by the State Government through Creative Victoria and run in partnership with El Perro Productions, ALH Group, Music Victoria and APRA/AMCOS, is an amazing opportunity for bands from this region to build a supportive network around their music. list that will save the lives of a number of double agents who were active during the Cold War. Throughout the course of her mission she encounters David Percival, a former Berlin bureau chief gone feral played with vigour by James McAvoy (Split, X-Men: Apocalypse). It’s clear he’s enjoying himself and Sofia Boutella’s French spy Delphine, who serves as a love interest. What Atomic Blonde lacks in plot and character depth, its complex choreographed fight sequences more than make up for. Beautifully lensed by cinematographer Jonathan Sela and backed by a killer ‘80s soundtrack, there’s something to savour in every shot. Captivating virtuoso soprano Merlyn Quaife, accompanied by Andrea Katz, will thrill concert-goers with her recital hosted by the Peninsula Music Society on September 9 at 7.30pm at the accessible Peninsula Community Theatre. Merlyn, who received the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the 2013 Queen’s Birthday Honours, has been described by The Age critic Clive O’Connell as having “a no-nonsense style and razorsharp exactness … in observation of dynamics, care of phrasing, (and) textual clarity”.

A full house is expected for her repertoire, which will include Mozart, Alma Grande K578, select Schubert and Schumann lieder, the romantic Strauss with a crescendo into Roger Heagney and Christopher Willcock, and a finale of the Love Song Medley. This will be a sparkling evening.

Tickets are available online at pmsmusic.asn.au, from Farrell’s Bookshop in Mornington and Robinsons Bookshop in Frankston, or at the door an hour before the start of the concert at 91 Wilsons Rd, Mornington. AUGUST 2017

Frustrated at the lack of fashionable clothing and lingerie for full-figured women and longing to own her own business, Lisa gave up her work as a secretary 22 years ago and made a splash in this niche market. Lisa’s Lacies was born, and Lisa hasn’t stopped making tracks and collecting fans with her distinctive, thoughtful and fashion-forward pieces. She adores her loyal customers who send their friends in to enjoy her well-made and long-lasting pieces, just as they have. “I thought to myself, ‘I don’t want to wear those ugly styles with limited choices’,” Lisa says. “Ultimately, I was very selfish as I wanted to design these products for myself, but everyone enjoyed my designs so it’s worked out well.”

“It’s very hard, but at the same time it’s rewarding when I see our customers comfortable, well fitted and feeling fashionable.” Have a chat with the lovely Lisa and find that best-fitting bra you’ve been longing for. With sizes ranging from 12 to 40+, the store is the best destination for lingerie and clothing in larger sizes. Lisa’s proud to say her business is Australian owned and run, and the items she sells are made right here in Seaford with staff she’s worked with for decades. “We love our girls. We ship worldwide, but we focus on sourcing our material from Australian companies.” If you’re thinking it’s everything you’ve been wishing for, you’ll be drawn to Lisa’s exclusive new range that was launched at a VIP night live fashion show last month (pictured here). Vibrant colours in casual styles, stylish cuts, blue hues, feminine prints, flattering flowy garments and dressier numbers for glam nights were all on show. The versatile collection of mix and match items is perfectly interchangeable for Melbourne’s ever-changing weather. They were almost sold out by the night’s end, with two more runs completed since. This truly confirms Lisa’s flair for design. www.franklyfrankston.com.au

Prolonged sitting has a negative effect of the body, primarily decreased veinous return. This is due to the ‘kinks’ in your veins from having your hips and knees bent as well as the general decrease in lower limb muscle activity. These factors combine to cause swelling in your feet and

There’s a few things you can do; regular walks up the aisle and ‘foot pump’ exercises in your seat will help, but the best thing you can do is spend as much time as you can at the airport walking. How to travel in comfort

It’s this time of year that people try to escape the cold of winter and head off to somewhere warmer. Whether you are heading up north to sunny Queensland or a bit further to the European summer, it goes without saying you have a lot of sitting ahead of you... and unless you have managed to get an upgrade or emergency aisle seat, the majority of that sitting will be in cramped seating.

Fantastic news for fantasy artist A South Frankston-based businesswoman has been named a finalist in the 2017 AusMumpreneur Awards. Kelly McDonald owns Garden Babies Fairy Art, a whimsical fantasy photography studio specialising in artistic children’s portraits, and has been selected as a finalist in the awards’ Handmade Business category. Kelly has based her career on magic, faeries, art and a love of working with children. She has a diploma in child care, worked in many kinders around Victoria before starting Garden Babies, and was quite well known around Melbourne as the Magical Faerie Crystal, providing magic and storytelling at kindergartens, corporate events and birthday parties for the past 20 years.

“When I was gifted a beautiful baby girl at 40 and had to go back to work, I said to my husband, ‘I have an idea, I just don’t know if people will like it - I want to mix my magic and storytelling with my art but make it as much about the process as the final artwork’. People liked it. That was almost exactly three years ago and I can only see my business growing from here.” The AusMumpreneur Awards celebrate and recognise Australian mums in business achieving outstanding success in areas such as business excellence, product development, customer service and digital innovation. The 2017 awardwinners will be announced in Sydney on August 25. Read more about the awards at ausmumpreneur.com GARDEN BABIES FAIRY ART T: 0420 646 244 W: gardenbabiesfairyart.com

Professionalism you can count on Word of mouth referrals have propelled the growth of Keats Accounting, a locallyfocused accounting firm committed to ethical, approachable practice. Founder Sam Keats brings to the business big-firm expertise delivered with small-firm service. Established in Seaford in 2010, Keats Accounting soon outgrew its original premises and has now relocated to a larger, modern and family-friendly office in Carrum Downs which is easily accessible and offers free parking. Chisholm farewells long-serving CEO After seven years as Chisholm Institute’s chief executive officer, Maria Peters is stepping down. Mrs Peters will retire at the end of the year having overseen the transformation of Chisholm into one of Australia’s most successful TAFE institutes. In 2014 it was named the Large Training Provider of the Year at both the Victorian and Australian Training Awards, so it’s hardly surprising its CEO is regarded as one of the leading figures within the Australian vocational and tertiary education sector. Mrs Peters said it had taken her considerable time to come to terms with her decision given the organisation had played such a significant and important part in her life, but she remained deeply committed to ensuring a successful transition over the coming months. “I am very determined for the benefit of the whole Chisholm community to see the organisation set up for continued success in the many years ahead,” she said. Each year Chisholm caters for 35,000 students at its nine campuses across Melbourne and the southeastern region, including Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula (Rosebud), as well as online and in the workplace. The institute hopes to have a replacement for Mrs Peters by the date of her retirement.

perspective we’ll do a little maths for you: a total of 682 beers from 118 breweries were entered

for judging in the awards. They did mighty well! As Dan said at the awards: “Everyone in this room,

After being established in 2013, this brewery and tap house has become the local watering hole as it keeps its loyal patrons returning for fresh and often surprising brews. The family-centric team have only been making beer for a year, yet their Cherrywood Smoked Baltic Porter was named Champion Australian Craft Beer at the 2017 Australian Craft Beer Awards, where it also won the Champion Porter/ Stout. This beer was a surprising winner given its complex and unexpected flavour profile. The Daintons also received gold medals for their IPA, Choc Orange Porter and Cherrywood Porter, silver for their Draught and bronze for their Cranberry Gose. “We are humbled and excited by the win,” said founder and head brewer Dan Dainton. “The award was a huge surprise and we are really thrilled to think that we rate alongside our peers in the industry.” This brewery has come a long way since its gypsy brewing beginning. In fact, to put their win in

True to his spirit, Dan thanked his extended family, the Carrum Downs community. “We’re so excited to be part of the community, and we appreciate everyone who has got behind us either by supporting or visiting us. Thanks to those who have helped us integrate ourselves into the community area, and most importantly those who have tried our beer. “The fact that a beer that drinks like a chocolate cigar has won Australia’s best craft beer makes us believe we as a beer-drinking community are on the right track to drinking more exciting, flavoursome and independently made beer.”

A CHAT WITH OUR FOOD, WINE & DINING EXPERTS Todd Pergrum - The Craft & Co Farm 170 River End Road Bangholme Frankly Frankston speaks to Todd Pergrum, who has been the chef at The Craft & Co Farm for just over a year now and credits his training at William Angliss under the careful eye of a great chef, teacher and friend Freddy Bosshard. Please describe your menu selections at The Craft & Co Farm. What trends are you loving at the moment? I tweaked the menu a little to consider the demographic of the area. I grew up five minutes away and have been in the area for 42 years. Let’s just say I know what they like to eat. As far as trends go, I don’t follow them at all. My food is honest and hearty; I’m old school and just go with the flow. If I see any more chips served in mini fryer baskets I think I’ll cry. For those who aren’t familiar with your restaurant, give us some insight into what makes you different? The Craft & Co Farm is unique in that is the only working winery in the local area, while incorporating a lot of paddock-to-plate dining. We have just recently purchased chickens for their eggs and have our own vegetable, herb and botanicals

( 54

garden. You can dine among our wine tanks and barrels or in our outdoor courtyard. The kids can run around and play on our huge open grassed areas while you sample our wines, craft beer and spirits in our cellar door - good food, drinks, ambience and space. It’s also becoming more popular now for group functions and events, with one particular group recently requesting to dine among our vines, which is definitely something that sets us apart. Even our sister site in Collingwood brews beer, distills gin, roasts coffee and makes sausages, salami and cheeses which we incorporate into our menu. Please tell us a little about your professional background? I’m not what you call a classically trained chef, but I had always cooked and even had my own catering company for a while. Then I put myself through school to finally become a chef and haven’t looked back. What is your style in the kitchen? My style is rustic … very rustic. We didn’t have much growing up but my mother showed me how to make a meal out of virtually anything. “Waste not, want not” was her saying. Big plates, big smiles and company to share it with. What’s your favourite ingredient to cook with in the cooler months? I am definitely a carnivore and could see myself chasing woolly mammoths in a previous life, so any kind of meat is what I like to cook during winter. My favorite would be pork. When not in the kitchen, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

With what little spare time I get I try and watch my local footy team, Chelsea Heights FNC. I have been supporting them for over 42 years and I have been cooking for the boys for well over 20. Other than that, my family takes pride of place. They are young and don’t get to see their dad as much as they should. What do you love most about what you do? I have always loved food, always. My mum was a brilliant cook; she could cook for 20 with nothing but a grill and two hot plates, so I have a lot to thank her for. I cook at home every night and every Thursday in footy and cricket season. It’s the satisfaction of sharing a meal with friends and family, and we don’t do enough of it as far as I’m concerned. Life is short. Any advice for aspiring chefs? Be prepared to work hard, and I mean hard. Head down, bum up, and listen. Keep your mouth closed and your ears open. Learn everything you can off everyone you work with. And taste everything you can, even the stuff you hate. Also travel far and wide - it will not only expand you cooking, it will open your mind.

Property management done properly

Leasing department manager Nicola Mackinnon.

BY KATE SEARS

Harcourts has become the fastest growing group in Victoria and celebrates its 20th birthday this year. Its new office, Harcourts Central in Frankston, is co-owned by Brent Pullar and Steve Foster-Swan. The team are passionate and have a strong focus on property management; they are determined to alleviate the most complained about issue across the industry: communication breakdown. “We ensure our property management ratio is kept low so we can focus on providing excellent customer service,” said leasing department manager Nicola Mackinnon. “Communicating effectively with our landlords and tenants is the key to a successful investment.”

( 56

Harcourts Central has the technology to keep landlords and tenants informed at all times. An online portal gives landlords, tenants and accountants access to files such as invoices or maintenance inquiries. This achieves effective communication and detailed reporting. Nicola is a licensed real estate agent, giving you the assurance of understanding legislation so she can manage any problem that may arise and answer any legislation specific questions her clients may have when she meets them face to face. This reinforces the bond between her and the landlords and tenants so they feel valued and listened to. Bayside Grout Solutions - turn your shower from Drab to Fab in a day! Jorg from Bayside Grout Solutions states that shower and bathroom mould is probably the most common, frustrating tile-related problem for many households. Wet and high humidity areas with poor ventilation provide the perfect breeding ground for mould. Once mould develops in porous grout and silicone joints, no amount of scrubbing with strong chemicals will resolve the problem – at least not long-term. In fact, mould-killing chemicals eventually damage the grout and silicone. Showers

with frequent growth of mould spores need to be assessed by a shower repair expert. In a full shower rejuvenation, you will have the tiles and all shower surfaces professionally cleaned and disinfected then the grout is replaced with sanitised grout, which has an in-built sealant which helps keep the new grout looking fresh, all tiles are manually polished and silicone seals are reapplied to the shower screen, base line and verticals as needed. Sensible garden design is becoming more important in the continual shift in climatic conditions, in particular the apparent reduction in seasonal rainfall. Before considering any form of garden design it is important to have an understanding of your immediate environment and the region in which you live. Observation is the key. It has become apparent that some of the exotic plants that once thrived in our gardens are suffering as local rainfall has declined. So, before embarking on a garden design journey or replacing suffering plants with alternatives, it is worth spending some time

mapping out the warm, cool, wet and dry areas in your yard so you can make sensible decisions about your plant choices and structure placements. Also, have a look around the neighbourhood to see what does well. Wise plant selections are important. Indigenous and appropriate native plants are best adapted to your local environment and require less water and maintenance while providing natural habitat for local wildlife species. In our coastal areas, hardy plants that have a local relationship are desired to create a thriving ecological community. Make use of perennial plants where possible, as they require

less attention than annuals. Annual plants have an important place in a permaculture system, but confine these to vegetables, leafy greens, useful flowers and green manure crops. Permaculture is a term used to describe a natural approach to the designing of our built environment and encompasses both the home and garden. If you are a keen gardener it is well worth your time sourcing some further reading about permaculture systems and sustainable garden design. Various elements of a permaculture system will have multiple functions. Carefully placed elements provide a number of uses. Whether it’s a structure

Chooks are an important part of the waste recycling system in a permaculture garden. As well as a few eggs a day, chooks will also help to keep your garden free of weeds and fallen fruit, but it is wise to design your chook systems carefully to prevent both plant and chook losses. Spring is the perfect time to introduce chooks into your backyard, so if it is something you have been thinking about for a while, give it a go now. The kids will love it. Sensible garden design and permaculture describes a thoughtful, integrated and sustainable approach to design. Combining food growing with sensible plantings and waste recycling will allow you to enjoy a diverse and robust garden.

or plant arrangement, consider how a particular element can serve more than one purpose. You may be able to not only provide food from a selected tree, but also seasonal shelter and shade. Other plants can help to build the soil by fixing atmospheric nitrogen or provide organic matter that can be dug into the soil or used in your compost. Recycling of resources is paramount to a functional permaculture design. Water harvesting, grey-water reuse, and kitchen and garden waste recycling are a few basic concepts that will significantly enhance your garden system. Composting used in conjunction with a productive worm farm provides consistent quantities of organic fertiliser and soilbuilding material. Outside inputs can be kept to a minimum with a well-functioning system. However, should you require additional materials, try to source clean, unpackaged, local and preferably recycled material.
