Exhibition celebrates Frankston’s heart Frankston City is a centre of investment and redevelopment. But even with works under way and cranes in the sky, the city continues to thrive with fantastic shopping, dining, services and visitor experiences. “This is in many parts thanks to Frankston’s heart - the tens of thousands of people who live, work and study here,” said Frankston Mayor Brian Cunial. To celebrate, the council is combining a series of www.franklyfrankston.com.au
campaigns and exhibitions to bring you a collection of remarkable photographs and stories of the people you may pass on the street every day. “One of the exhibitions is Locals of Frankston by internationally renowned photographer Richard Simpkin, who is best known for his Richard and Famous selfie series with celebrities,” Cr Cunial said. In December 2014, Richard photographed a range of people – from residents to former mayors – to
present a true snapshot of the diversity that makes Frankston such a unique bayside city. “It promotes Frankston in a positive way and I hope we can all come together for this wonderful exhibition,” he said. Locals of Frankston is at the Frankston Arts Centre until October 21 and will be complemented by portraits projected on to the centre’s flytower. Visit www.frankstonfaces.com for more details. From Zero to Hero in just 12 months Twelve months ago, we made a bold decision to launch Frankly Frankston. The option was there to extend the circulation of Mornington Peninsula Magazine, which in the past 11 years has become the most widely distributed and popular magazine on the Mornington Peninsula. But we felt the businesses and people of the greater Frankston region deserved their own publication, one dedicated to showcasing and promoting everything that is unique and wonderful about this vibrant region. In an era of almost unprecedented print media uncertainty, Frankly Frankston arrived and has thrived. Each month 25,000 issues are distributed across the region from more than 2200 outlets and pickup points, and, as the first glossy magazine to focus specifically on Frankston we have engaged readers and advertisers across all platforms. From a zero base we have built up a readership of more than 50,000, and our social media engagement
OUR
COVER
regularly outstrips the “local papers”. In under 12 months we have 2400 followers on Facebook and 1565 on Instagram, and those numbers are growing with every edition. Our reach on Facebook alone last month was over 42,000 post views. Our aim was to focus only on the positives of the region. That’s what we’ve done and what we’ll continue to do. Over the past year we’ve shone a spotlight on many of the people and places that make our region so incredibly vibrant and exciting: world-class artists and craftspeople; highly talented authors, filmmakers, musicians, entertainers, actors and sportspeople; innovative and successful businesses taking on the world; restaurants, bars, breweries, shops, tourist attractions; and ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Not to mention the tremendous support we have given to local charities, clubs and fundraisers. Yes, we are a little bit funky and a little bit edgy, but that is what Frankston is – and embracing the new Frankston is high on
our agenda. Filled with fabulous local stories, homewares, fashion, health and beauty, and profiles on businesspeople, Frankly Frankston is a must-read if you want to know what’s happening here. Much of our success has been down to an incredibly hardworking and talented team: Andrea Haynes (sales), Kate Sears (social media and editorial), Lisa Walton (publisher), Jasmine Ward (design), Tanya Fry (photography), Liz Rogers & Andrea Kellett (editorial), Archie Mitchell (distribution) and Scott Jackson, Yazmine Lomax and Cameron Howe (contributors). But most of all we want to thank you, our loyal and dedicated readers and advertisers – your continued enthusiasm and support is what keeps us going. If you have considered having your business showcased, advertising your wares and services or letting our readers know about your event, then get on board. Contact Andrea Haynes on 0419 506 320.

Frankly Speaking with Cristina Velez BY YAZMINE LOMAX
Cristina Velez is a US-born designer who has recently moved to Mornington. The ambitious 21-year-old chats to Frankly Frankston about her life-long love of fashion, international style, and how her new home will inspire her label. Where did your love of fashion start? My mom taught me to sew when I was about seven or eight years old. I’ve always loved expressing myself with what I wore; dressing yourself each day is such an intimate thing. What differences have you noticed between New York and Melbourne style? I don’t think there is anything like New York style. It’s the most amazing, bizarre thing. You’ll see someone walking down the street in sweatpants and a dirty T-shirt with fluffy slippers, and then behind them someone in 10-inch rainbow platforms with fluorescent braids, a mesh top and American flag cut-off shorts. Here, as far as I’ve seen, www.franklyfrankston.com.au
people are very put together. What’s your proudest achievement? My proudest achievement would be starting my own ethical, sustainable clothing label, Covert Clothing. I design clothing made with organic and vintage fabrics, or up-cycled materials. It’s all cruelty-free so no animal products whatsoever. I didn’t feel there were enough options that were actually ethical as well as environmentally friendly. I wanted people to be able to shop my clothing and feel good about the company they were investing their money into. It’s still in its early stages but I’m so excited to see where it goes. Why do you love where you live and how does it inspire your work? I’m new to Australia as of May and I’m loving it! The scenery here is gorgeous and the people are lovely. Australia is much more welcoming of what I’m doing; people are generally environmentally conscious and look for sustainable items to limit their footprint. Being around like-minded people definitely encourages me to keep working towards what I believe in. JULY 2017

A colourful new work of art has given job seekers a boost to their confidence and self-esteem. The mural, which adorns the wall of the SkillsPlus office in Playne St, was created by Indigenous artist Heather Kennedy in partnership with Tony Jarrah from Envision Employment and Work for the Dole participants from the
Frankston community. It was initiated by SkillsPlus as a part of its Indigenous Cultural Project, and was funded by the Federal Government as a Work for the Dole activity. SkillsPlus, which provides this service at no cost to the community through the Australian Government’s jobactive initiative, is an integral member of a much larger consortium led by AMES and supported by ECHO and Wesley Mission Victoria. “We’re thrilled that our job seekers have worked together to put together such a significant piece of artwork,” said SkillsPlus chief executive Ben Vasiliou. “Most of our job seekers want to work and engage in the community. Getting a job often contributes to improved mental health, confidence and self-esteem, which has a positive impact on the individual as well as the community.” Envision Employment manager Sean Teer said he was proud of the job seekers’ efforts and appreciated the support of Heather and Tony. “This has been both an exciting and culturally important project for the Frankston-Peninsula region.” The mural was unveiled last month by Frankston Mayor Brian Cunial.

In February 2013, an explosion with the force of 30 Hiroshima bombs lit up the sky over the Chelyabinsk region of Russia. The resulting air blast shattered windows across six cities, injuring an estimated 1500 people. The 18m meteor that exploded 20km above Earth (pictured) was a sobering reminder that when it comes to space invaders, it’s not aliens we have to fear as much as the millions of wandering celestial bodies with which we share the solar system. And while catastrophic strikes from space might be the stuff of Hollywood blockbusters, they’re not mere science fiction. Just ask the dinosaurs. On any clear night, away from the light pollution of our cities, you can witness these visitors as shooting stars or falling stars. They’re actually meteors, the term given to a meteoroid that has entered the atmosphere. If the meteor survives its journey to the surface of the Earth, it’s called a www.franklyfrankston.com.au
meteorite. And for more than 50 years Cranbourne was the site of Australia’s largest meteorite find after a 7.8 tonne ball of iron disintegrated in a fiery shower over the Dandenong Ranges and scattered its fragments in a 22km corridor from Beaconsfield to Pearcedale.
scientists that the museum returned No.2 to the colony, and it now resides at Museum Victoria.
The Cranbourne meteor is thought to have fallen between 200 and 2000 years ago, and 13 meteorites have so far been recovered. The first, Cranbourne No.1, was a 3550kg monster that reportedly held some significance for the area’s Aboriginal people before it was retrieved from Devon Meadows in 1854 after a settler attempted to tether his horse to what he thought was a stump sticking out of the ground. The second, the 1525kg Cranbourne No.2, was recovered from Clyde the same year, and both were bought by London’s Natural History Museum. However, the sale caused such an uproar among Australian
In 1911 the Cranbourne meteorite lost its heavyweight title to the Nullarbor’s Mundrabilla meteorite, which at 18 tonnes is still well short of Namibia’s 60 tonne Hoba. And of course nothing comes close to the planet-busting asteroid that smashed into Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula 65 million years ago, unleashing the energy of 10 billion Hiroshima bombs and taking 75 per cent of all species with it.
Closer to home, Cranbourne No.12 resides at Casey Council’s Narre Warren customer service centre, although the meteorite display at Cranbourne was removed several years ago.
So the next time you see a meteor streaking across the sky, you might want to thank your lucky stars that that’s all it is. JULY 2017

VCE: Ready to go! BY ZAHLI MCFARLANE
Like any student heading into the VCE years I’ve been feeling a bit anxious about the decisions I need to make. As a Year 10 student it dawns on you that your choices over the next few years impact your future. Lots of questions run through your head. What subjects should I choose? Which tertiary institution offers the course I’m interested in? How do ATARs work? It’s enough to make even the most confident and capable student feel overwhelmed. Peninsula Grammar has taken our VCE preparation to the next level. The school offered a VCE and Pathways Expo which gave both students and parents the opportunity to explore the 35 VCE subjects on offer. We were able to ask the teachers questions and investigate our areas of interest. There were also 13 institutions at the expo showcasing their courses, offering us valuable insight into options, prerequisites and life beyond VCE. After the expo I went to a presentation with my
( 10
mum where we learnt all about the mechanics of VCE. My parents did the HSC and only understand Anderson Scores so they were grateful to have the chance to understand the process and ask questions. Peninsula Grammar also invited past students back to school to tell us about their post VCE lives and experiences. We found this invaluable and felt excited about the future after hearing from the VCE graduates. We finished Term 2 with all students having a chance to sit one on one with teachers
representing the VCE subjects. This enabled me to ask my final questions and lock in my subject choices. I am fully prepared for the future and know that I will be completely supported by my school as I undertake this exciting journey. Peninsula Grammar has done everything it can to ease my transition into VCE and I feel confident about life after school. PENINSULA GRAMMAR A: 20 Wooralla Drive, Mount Eliza T: 9788 7707

Mass planting makes a difference More than 600 students from Prep to Year 12 rolled up their sleeves and got hands-on during last month’s Make a Difference (MAD) Week, planting 300 heathland plants on the Cornish College campus. The plants were bought with a $1000 Momentum Energy Junior Landcare Grant, with college grounds manager Tom Humphreys and parent David Jupp co-ordinating the planting from June 26-28. “This is a great start to building an understory below the established gums behind our oval, and will increase biodiversity and attract a broader range of bird life,” Mr Humphreys said. Principal Vicki Steer said MAD Week was “a wonderful opportunity for students to demonstrate our motto through a range of initiatives and really make a difference. This project directly involves them in improving their 100-acre (40.5ha) campus and understanding the difference they can make to their environment. It is great to see older and younger students working together in multi-age groups and further cementing friendships that span year groups”.
( 12
Cornish College reinvented its timetable during MAD Week as students, staff and parents worked together on a range of projects that made a difference at the school and for the wider community. They included fundraising for 2 Pairs Each, which provides new socks for homeless people, a ‘reverse supermarket’ to collect food and personal hygiene items for underprivileged and vulnerable people, a visit to nursing homes where
Preps sang for the residents, and a heart created by primary students from 5c coins for the Love Ya Sister Foundation. CORNISH COLLEGE A: 65 Riverend Rd, Bangholme T: 9781 9011 W: cornishcollege.vic.edu.au

Night time is the right time. The world is quiet and the business of the day has melted away to leave space to really create. In the kitchen. In recent MasterChef guest, Executive Chef Deniz Karaca’s kitchen. In Seaford! Deniz Karaca has been making life sweet since he was 16 years old when he began training as a pastry chef in Germany. Now a chocolatier supreme who has worked world-wide and created a 1.8-metre-tall and 45-kilo chocolate corkscrew at the World Chocolate Masters in Paris in 2013, Deniz feels his best when experimenting with different flavours in his home kitchen. He explains. “This is where I can really taste and combine flavours. I love chocolate. It is a fascinating medium to work with. You can be so creative and it is forgiving because you can melt it and start again even though it is hard to work with. My wife and I began our chocolate business Cuvée in 2014 as a side concern to my consulting and
( 14
mentoring work. It is what I love to do.” But back to Paris. It took four months to develop Deniz’s corkscrew concept, four hours to assemble it and three people to lift it. He came third in those world championships, but it was his participation at the Patissier Of The Year in Sydney in 2016 that got MasterChef judges tongues salivating and wagging. He made a caramel tart – and it was the best caramel tart! “The MasterChef (aired Network 10 in June) experience was great. We filmed for the day. I was so impressed with the contestants. My “Passion for Caramel’ tart was complex. I usually make one in under two hours. Those guys did it in three. Pretty good for amateurs.” Deniz Karaca has been named Australia’s top chocolatier. His delicious Cuvée chocolate is made from the best quality cocoa beans from around the world (think Belize, Ecuador, Tanzania and Ghana to name a few.) This is chocolate that leaves you wanting for more and scores a 10 out of 10. Immunity pin? No thanks – life’s too short not to eat chocolate.

Have you got any idea of what goes on beneath the still waters of Port Phillip Bay around May to late June each year? It’s crowded, crusty and crunchy down there where circus performing creepy-crawlies come together to shed their shells - and that means there’s an uninvited entourage not far behind. It’s all go, go, go! Spider crabs. They come in thousands. An aggregation of spider crabs in all their six-legged and two-pincer glory make their way into the shallow waters of Port Phillip Bay to moult every year. You wouldn’t know it was happening unless you went snorkelling or diving over the few weeks www.franklyfrankston.com.au
BY LIZ ROGERS this magic event occurs, but naturalist David Attenborough and the BBC sure know about it and the word is that this is one of the most dynamic annual underwater events on the planet. Right here on our doorstep. This is how it works. The crabs come in closer to shore as the water cools. They shed their old shells which have become too small, and huddle up close or on top of each other in stacks that are sometimes 10 deep while their new shells grow. Why? There’s safety in numbers, and numbers matter when your soft body is exposed and there is some sneaky marine animal just around the corner
searching for a crustacean degustation. Predators have been recorded swimming around in May and June with bulging stomachs! (Think seals, rays, dolphins and birds.) The aggregation of brainy crustaceans can stretch for hundreds of metres and is best known to occur between Tootgarook and Blairgowrie, and is often seen near structures such as Rye Pier and the Blairgowrie Marina. Similar events have been recorded in other areas including St Leonards. So now you know. Still waters do run deep. They also play dress-ups and host banquets. Who would have thought? JULY 2017

Susan sets sights on English Channel challenge BY KATE SEARS Swimming the English Channel is a massive challenge in itself. But when it’s being attempted by someone who has overcome a paralysing 30-year fear of water brought on by an unimaginable tragedy, it’s truly heroic. At 15, Susan Berg was the sole survivor of a boating accident on Westernport Bay that claimed the lives of her parents and brother. She struggled through the darkness for three-and-a-half hours, battling the bitter cold
sea and dense mangroves, before reaching the shore of French Island. Stricken with survivor’s guilt, she spiralled into drugs and sex, and charged down a path of self-destruction. She was also struck by a fear of water so severe that even the sound of it was highly distressing, and the hottest summer day couldn’t tempt her anywhere near a pool. Only after she cheated death for a second time in a motorcycle accident did she begin to love herself and
embrace life again. Last year Susan was challenged by a friend to face her fears and take part in the world’s largest open-water swim, the Lorne Pier to Pub, to raise money for McAuley Community Services for Women. After putting off buying a swimsuit and then being traumatised after swimming just one lap of a pool, Susan progressed to completing 25 laps but was still fraught with anxiety. But she persevered and overcame these obstacles, completing the Pier to Pub in January. As if this wasn’t enough, she has also conquered The Rip Swim – across The Heads from Point Nepean to Point Lonsdale. In August next year, Susan will join three other swimmers in a bid to complete the Channel crossing from England to France. Susan believes she’s facing these challenges as part of her journey of self-healing and to encourage others to tackle their own fears. “The last time I saw my family was
( 20
in the water, so I feel like I’m reuniting with them each time I swim, and I know they’re really proud that I got my life on track.”
“Fear is in the mind. We all have the ability to face our fears and live a happy, fulfilling life.” Training for the English Channel attempt in August 2018 will start in full next month with coach, Peter Hendriks and without a wetsuit. That’s right - the squad of four are training together wearing just bathers because wetsuits aren’t allowed for the 50km relay. If you’re shivering while reading this, picture sitting in the
freezing water as you wait for your body to adjust at 7am each day. This alone is a tough flashback to the cold October night Susan spent in the water fighting for her life. Susan knows from her own experience that life is short, so she’s chosen to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation so children aged 3-18 with life-threatening illnesses can fulfil their own dreams. Donate at www. gofundme.com/susan-bergenglish-channel-relay to support Susan’s goal. And if you’d like to delve deeper into Susan’s remarkable story, you can read her autobiography, The Girl Who Lived.

Look for one that you can dress up for work and down with jeans for the weekend. You may need two different styles in your wardrobe: relaxed and sloppy, and fitted and tailored. This season there are some gorgeous detailing going on with knits – beads and studding is for the fashionforward lady that will have heads turning. - “Scarves are the ultimate accessory winner for your winter wardrobe. The beautiful cable knit snoods are bang on trend this season - soooooo warm and snuggly. Be bold with your accessories and wear a bright colour as this will lift the look of your outfit. - “Your winter wardrobe will not be complete without a fabulous pair(s) of stylish boots. Sleep In Your Car 2017 On any night an estimated 105,237 Australians are homeless, and 2000 of them are believed to be on the Mornington Peninsula and in Frankston. You can do something about that. Fusion Australia is asking you to give up your home for a night, in order to help someone else find theirs. On Saturday, August 5, join Fusion Mornington Peninsula for Sleep In Your Car 2017 and join a line of local heroes who have slept out in Mornington Park. Sleep in your car or sleep rough and for those unable to sleep out, join Fusion Mornington Peninsula from 5.30pm to learn about homelessness in our community and break down some of the stereotypes around young people experiencing it. Stuart Bell, housing co-ordinator at Fusion Mornington Peninsula, explains: “With the closure of caravan parks across the Peninsula, what has traditionally been an affordable and accessible form of accommodation is largely no longer available. With people now competing for available rental properties, young people may find successfully accessing a tenancy extremely difficult, if not impossible. Register at sleepinyourcar.com.au JULY 2017

Artist crosses the Finnish line BY YAZMINE LOMAX
Lauren Guymer is a Langwarrin-based visual artist who draws highly detailed landscapes, cosmic scenes and imaginary places. The mindboggling part? She uses pen and ink to create pieces comprised entirely of tiny dots, lines and circles.
So what’s next for this emerging artist? “In the near future I’m going to Iceland to the NES artist residency. I’ll be there for art-making purposes for two months, and then rounding it off with a solo
road trip around the country. I don’t think I can get any better in terms of inspiration for my work. Art and travel work hand in hand for me, so that’s all I can hope for the future.”
The 24-year-old had been sketching with fine liners since high school but has only stepped into the world of purely pen-created art over the past two years. “It’s been a pretty cool journey figuring out what you can do with just a pen, some ink and a piece of paper,” Lauren says. Last year she staged her first solo exhibition, Parallel Universe, at Off The Kerb Gallery in Collingwood. Lauren frequently participates in group shows, the most recent being Art Red Hill where she won Best in Show in her category. With her work heavily inspired by travel and geography, Lauren recently undertook an artist’s residency at the Arteles Creative Centre in Finland. She found herself in the depths of the Finnish winter with a group of world-class artists, immersed in a program that focused on silence, relaxation and artistic expression without the pressure of completing refined works. “Highlights include exploring the snowy forest and countryside every day, watching auroras for a whole week in the north, Christmas with the Arteles crew, and experiencing minus 40C weather,” Lauren says.

Community spirit reflected in reserve Frankston Nature Conservation Reserve has had a new lease on life since being recently gazetted as a nature conservation reserve.
park. Recently, volunteers joined award-winning Australian landscape architect Phillip Johnson in a big winter plant-out to recreate the entry to the reserve with a feature rain garden and billabong purpose-built to catch and purify rainwater.
After nearly 100 years of isolation, the reserve – formerly known as Frankston Reservoir – is now open to the public and boasts a treasure trove of indigenous flora and fauna for the community to appreciate and enjoy. It is one of the last remaining pockets of wilderness that give an insight into the region’s biodiversity before European settlement. Despite its urban setting, the 98ha site is just 3.5km from the city centre and hosts rare, endangered and nationally significant species such as the musk duck and green hooded orchid as well as koalas, echidnas and yellow tailed black cockatoos. The opening of the site has been a remarkable example of community spirit. The Friends of FNCR volunteer group has been operating for more than 10 years and is instrumental in maintaining the reserve’s environmental integrity, working with traditional land owners to provide cultural heritage interpretation and working tirelessly to see the successful opening of the
( 30
The group has also focused on encouraging students in the area to join, thereby facilitating networking through important industry links and with the rangers, environmental management organisations and other local stakeholders. Said one student: “Volunteering for the Friends of FNCR group taught me so much more about Australian native flora and fauna and allowed me to appreciate how precious the reserve is for preserving and protecting a diverse and vital ecosystem. It’s been extremely relevant to my degree in Conservation Management.”
FRANKSTON NATURE CONSERVATION RESERVE Since opening, the reserve has attracted 7000 visitors. Among its inhabitants are sugar gliders and tawny frogmouths, as well as the threatened growling grass frog. There are three main walking tracks - Dam Wall Walk, Kookaburra Bush Walk and the Heathland Walk – which range from 15 minutes to 90 minutes and take in six diverse and distinct ecological vegetation classifications.
Frankston Nature Conservation Reserve is accessible via Jeremy Way and is open to the public from Thursday to Sunday, with rangers on hand to answer any questions visitors may have. The series of walks are signposted at the entrance to the reserve. Social media has become the new word of mouth; it’s how a consumer decides who gets their hard-earned money. Decisions on where to buy, visit or dine are influenced by Facebook profiles and customer reviews and photos - and of course advertisements with our own branding. With 24/7 access to our stories on what’s happening in our region, and with each story uploaded separately for our clients to share as they choose, we’re all working together to support local businesses.
Engagement with our social media posts is massive and growing, the result of keen interest in our stories and our readers’ eagerness to win competitions that offer amazing Peninsula products or experiences. Our recent competition to win 1 of five double passes to the Peninsula Hot Springs had almost 1 million views and attracted nearly 35,000 entries! From breaking her back in a skiing accident to completing a gruelling 844km bike ride through New Zealand, Caitlin O’Grady won’t let life just pass her by. Her cousin, Conor, was only 17 when he lost his 13-year battle with neuroblastoma cancer, and she realised that what she suffered from her back injury would have been a drop in the ocean compared with what Conor had to endure in terms of the pain and despair at the lack of time he had to complete his dreams. That’s when she decided to take his spirit on her next adventure and show him a part of the world that he’d always yearned to see. Thus, the ride for Conor, cancer and life was born. Back from her ride and after staging an exhibition of her photographs at The Nook Gallery, Caitlin spoke to Frankly Frankston about her www.franklyfrankston.com.au
impressive feat. “When I looked back just after finishing, I was overwhelmed. Just seeing the rocky roads and mountains that I, an amateur cyclist, had somehow cycled through. And I was utterly overwhelmed with the support that I gained.” Caitlin added that she’d had a lot of time to think on that bike, and grieved for everyone that she’d lost. Scenery played such an important part, not just for the photographer side of her but also the side that was eager to soak up every inch of what life offers. “When you cycle it, you can really feel it - for every rock, for every climb, for every smell, just to take it all in for what it’s worth.” Ambitious Caitlin reflects that her show was great, even though her photographs weren’t as good as she’d hoped because of the unpredictable and crazy weather. Of course, shooting with analogue also had its restrictions; each shot is precious
with film, unlike digital where you can take 100 shots of one subject then choose the best later. “You wait for the perfect moment,” she says. She’s in awe of the response and the support she received from sponsors and the public, selling more than 15 prints and raising an additional $3500 for The Conor Foley Neuroblastoma Cancer Research Foundation to add to the $10,000 raised by the ride itself. Six months after her ride, this courageous and inspiring young woman is considering doing it again possibly somewhere new, like Iceland
- but this time around perhaps just to test her own capabilities. Never stopping, Caitlin has now put her creative energy into starting a new creative agency called ‘DESFURA’ with Hayden O’Neill and is working on a few music video clips while she finishes her Fine Art Degree at VCA. She adds bravely: “Pushing your mentality and physicality is so interesting and kind of addictive.” If you’d like to donate or read more about Conor’s story, visit www. chuffed.org/project/rideforconor JULY 2017

Looking for a place to sit back and relax while listening to some cool Peninsula-style jazz? Then head on down to Patterson Lakes Community Centre where Peninsula jazz lovers can lounge around to the sounds of music that soothes the soul. The Peninsula Jazz Club began back in 1978 when a dedicated group of ‘jazzers’ formed to present jazz music on the Mornington Peninsula. The venues have changed over the years, but the same devotion to this style of music hasn’t wavered. Now with over 300 members, The Peninsula Jazz Clubs holds regular monthly get-togethers in Patterson Lakes (usually on the third Friday of each month) where both well-known local and interstate jazz musicians play. This means
there’s always a different style of jazz to be enjoyed and there’s even space for a bit of boogying too. Sunday afternoon speciality concerts happen four times a year, an annual dinner dance is held every May, and New Year’s Eve gets off to a bang with jazzed-up celebrations every year. Doors are open from 7.30 pm and close at 11pm and tickets can be purchased at the door or pre-booked by calling Jude Brown on 9558 2801. Keep your eyes peeled for a bus-load of music industry reps from Melbourne bobbing up and down around town this August. How will you know it’s them? You probably won’t, but they’ll be here nevertheless diving into some of the best live musical experiences the Mornington Peninsula offers.
The Victorian Music Crawl is a new Victorian Government initiative with the aim of building connections between Melbourne and regionallybased music industry leaders. Tour one earlier this year in February saw 25 Melbourne-based music managers, promoters, venue bookers, artists and music media take a three-day tour to Ballarat, Castlemaine, Bendigo and Echuca. Tour two is coming down south in August to help create future pathways and opportunities for regional and national touring musical artists.

THE MERCHANT OF VENICE by William Shakespeare | director Anne-Louise Sarks Saturday 19 August, 7.30pm
Money makes the world go around. Portia has it. Bassanio wants it. Shylock lends it. Antonio owes the value of it. Love also plays a part. Portia offers it. Bassanio wants it. And Antonio may lose a pound of flesh for it. This uncompromising and dark production explores the tense relationship and prejudices between those who have and those who don’t. Dark in its humour and bawdy in its romantic hijinks, The Merchant of Venice takes audiences on a journey of love, mercy and justice. Featuring three-time Helpmann Award winner Mitchell Butel (Janet King and Rake) as the defiant Shylock, and Jessica www.franklyfrankston.com.au
Tovey (Wolf Creek and Wonderland) as Portia, the production will be directed by Anne-Louise Sarks (Belvoir’s Jasper Jones and Medea). Face up to a younger look
The old adage that the eyes are the windows to the soul is still completely valid, according to Total Face Group. When asked what part of their face they would choose to enhance, one in three women said their eyes. Not only that, they said looking tired was their No.1 concern. TFG can combine anti-wrinkle dermal fillers and good quality skin care products to address fine lines, volume loss and the skin surface. Feeling refreshed and relaxed is desirable, and looking this way is too. A bright smile, open and inviting eyes and plump rosy cheeks are achievable with TFG, which can create a bespoke journey to slow the ageing process and create youthful and naturally happy faces. Skin care and regular skin checks can assist with long-term beauty. However, a plan to consider skin care, volume loss and softening of lines can slow down the signs of ageing and bring back a naturally youthful appearance. TFG values the importance of skin care with both take home and in-clinic services. A combination of both will assist with long-term skin health. Only one in 10 women in Australia have taken action to address the signs of ageing beyond topical lotions and minor treatments. Many are unaware of the possibilities available in the aesthetics arena that combine a topical skin plan as well as addressing volume loss and fine lines. TFG considers the whole face when working with clients. Your experience is tailored to your needs and a bespoke journey is created to ensure you receive the outcomes you are after. reduce
fat
Coolsculpting is a revolutionary method of reducing fat in stubborn areas that may be difficult to lose with diet or exercise alone. Coolsculpting can be used to reduce unwanted fat on your abdomen, love handles, back rolls, thighs and inner arms. There’s also a new treatment called the Coolmini, which will treat fat deposits on the inner knees and under the chin. The procedure uses patented technology to deliver targeted and controlled “cooling” to specific areas of your body. This affects only fat cells while ensuring no harm to any surrounding tissue or cells. Known as cryolipolysis, the process uses the body’s natural clearing mechanisms to remove the destroyed fat cells over a two to three-month period. www.franklyfrankston.com.au
As the fat is eliminated by the body, you will notice a reduction in your fat deposits. One treatment may reduce your fat deposits by 20-25 per cent, and these effects are permanent. Performed by Emma, Certified CoolSculpting Technician and Plastic Surgery Practice Nurse to Miss Patricia Terrill, the procedure requires no needles, anaesthesia or incisions and eliminates the downtime associated with traditional liposuction. Contact Ms Terrill’s rooms today to find out whether the Coolsculpting fat freezing procedure is right for you. Okay, now that we’ve got your attention we need to inform you of our own little (but mighty) French escape right here in Bonbeach. It’s called The Little French Deli & Kitchen. With a deli and bistro, you’re spoilt for choice. If you’re craving quintessential French cuisine, the 60-seat bistro with full service for lunch or dinner will conquer any hunger pangs. A classic French menu is filled with locally sourced produce and the usual suspects French onion soup, snails, soufflé, boeuf bourguignon and cassoulet. www.franklyfrankston.com.au
Chef Laurent and owner Chris have both worked in Michelin star restaurants overseas and describe their food as “French flavours, Australian passion”. They told Frankly Frankston they’re “producing good quality bistro food that’s done really well with a lot of attention to detail”. If a snack is on your mind, dive into the deli and we dare you to pick just one freshly baked French pastry. The full-time pastry chef fills 70 per cent of the deli with traditional pastries, so why not sit down and indulge in a coffee with a pastry or three or a casual lunch (all available for takeaway). If you’re as indecisive as us, you’ll
be best suited to the chef’s plate of the day for your dinner choice, called the Le plat du jour. It’s a traditional French way to eat, and while the contents vary weekly with seasonal finds, the price remains the same at $25 for the plate, or add a glass of wine for $35. Pop in every week to be dazzled each time. A cosy courtyard is welcoming of four-legged friends and there’s live jazz or blues every Sunday from 3.30-6.30pm.

Now this is something smart. Magefekt’s Tardis batteries are specifically built fit for purpose and can be adapted to a wide range of uniquely diverse projects.
Magefekt director Max Coulthard says the innovative Tardis batteries, devised five years ago, are an attractive alternative energy source for more reasons than one. “Tardis batteries can tolerate heat and perform at peak level even at 60C,” Max explains. “They are also smaller and lighter per energy available than any other battery of their type we know of.” And that’s just for starters. These ingeniously rugged and waterresistant batteries can be used almost anywhere. They have found their way into applications such as water and sewage management to drive pumps and even power an entire town water supply. They are made from specially formulated urethane, are terminalfree (so there’s no chance of wayward sparks) and leads are available at any length for extra safety and flexibility. The battery always remains cool to the touch during fast charging or when supplying a home’s power needs because of its low internal resistance. “Tardis batteries are ideal for home energy storage because of their compact design,” Max says. “The aluminium purpose-built cabinets which house these clever little energy providers can be carried on to premises easily and be
www.franklyfrankston.com.au
installed almost anywhere without using special carrying equipment. That’s one of the reasons they provide a safe and secure energy storage system that gives families real peace of mind. Vast range of unique furniture
Vast owners Michael and Jenny Warhurst regularly travel the world looking for that rare and unique piece of furniture, and everything is made from either reclaimed or sustainable timbers.
“Dining tables are our specialty, with sizes ranging anywhere from 90cm up to 3.2m,” Michael says. “A lot of our items are one-off pieces, which ensures that you won't see it anywhere else. You will never find multiples of the one item at Vast.” Michael and Jenny stock a huge variety of items, including paintings, monk statues, artificial plants, cushions, giftware, buffets, TV units and dining settings. “At Vast Carrum Downs, we’re passionate about the quality of handcrafted timber furniture we sell,” Michael says. “We use sustainable, renewable and recycled materials because we’re as concerned about our future on this planet as you are. We only deal with reputable suppliers that care about the environment and their workers. We love the fact that we are helping communities grow and prosper.” Created by hand, eye and heart, each piece holds a beauty and character all its own, but this is just the beginning of the story. Michael knows that once the furniture leaves the showroom floor, it becomes the stuff of memories. “And we just love being a part of that story, if only for a moment.” Vast has furniture with you in mind, so be inspired by the pieces that will become part of your family. Right now, Vast is having a huge stocktake sale, with everything in store reduced in price. So now is a great time to grab a piece of Vast. Vast is open seven days, and delivery anywhere can be arranged. VAST A: 8/684-700 Frankston Dandenong Rd, Carrum Downs T: 8787 7401 W: www.vastinterior.com.au

Woodtron’s leading edge It all started at home on the Mornington Peninsula, when over dinner, a glass of wine and hand-drawn diagrams, Woodtron was born. Geoff Sellman, head of the family and director of Woodtron, saw a need in the market to develop state-of-the-art CNC routers for the Australian woodworking industry. Not only this, he realised there was a demand for customisable solutions to suit businesses, whether they be furniture making, cabinets and shop fitting or even plastics and caravans. Recruiting his two sons, Luke and Kyle, and wife Jennie, Geoff took his 30-plus years of experience in the industry and built Woodtron, a company that recognises the need to have handson professional service to all customers and understands the value and requirements of a high-quality, reliable machine. “At Woodtron we design and manufacture all our own machines, so we ensure only the highest quality components from all over the world are used on every machine,” Geoff said. “It also gives us a true understanding of all the machines we sell, allowing us to provide only the very best service to our customers. “As Woodtron grows, so do our customers, and we continue to be a leader in the Australian woodworking industry.”

Being self-employed doesn’t mean home ownership is out of reach. The key is to be prepared, do your research and speak with a home lending expert. RAMS, which was named Best SelfEmployed Lender at the 2017 Australian Lending Awards, has developed five simple steps to help you along the way. 1. Know your business: It’s important you know key financial figures including your current income, net profit, expenditure and future projections. 2. Check your credit file history: Run a credit file report on your personal and business credit file history. 3. Work out your loan-to-value ratio, which is your loan amount shown as a percentage of the market value of the property you want to buy. The
percentage that lenders are willing to accept will vary. 4. Keep track of cash flow: Lenders will look at your personal and business cash flow to analyse your ability to make loan repayments. 5. Collate supporting documentation: It’s good to get together some of the supporting documentation you may need before your appointment to support your loan application. For more information, advice or assistance, phone 13 RAMS (13 72 67) or go to RAMS.com.au RAMS HOME LOAN CENTRE A: 3/490 Nepean Highway, Frankston T: 9770 2277 W: RAMS.com.au
Greater together is helping business owners become home owners. Because we understand that it can be hard for the self-employed to get a foot on the property ladder, we don’t charge Lender’s Mortgage Insurance when you borrow up to 80% of the purchase price (or valuation if lower).1 As your business brain would tell you, this could save you money.

The Mornington Peninsula & Frankston have many varied landscapes, forest to coast, clays to sands. While certain areas have rich fertile soils (think the amazing cherry and apple orchards of Red Hill and Main Ridge), others have very shallow soils devoid of many of the nutrients required for growing substantial food crops. A lot of people believe that growing edibles in these coastal localities is not possible and at best a struggle. We will all have seen the small backyard garden beds with the vegetables that just seem to sit there for months on end just staring back at you saying “help me!”. Or the yellowing citrus in the corner that barely produces and you are never sure when it’s going to wear its leaves again next. This is generally due to lack of nutrients and/or water. Additions of chemical or organic fertilisers can help in the short term, but the same problem will stick around until it is addressed properly. To have a productive space what every gardener needs is to skill up on “soil improvement”, and thankfully it’s not rocket surgery!! We can improve our coastal sandy soils significantly, no matter how poor the starting base. The biggest improvement we can make to sandy soils is to increase the ability of the soil to hold water, and thus being able to deliver nutrients to your food producing plants. We can begin this process in two general ways; by turning in composts rich in organic matter or by layering over existing soils. Depending on how depleted your soils and how much time you are prepared to devote to the exercise will

determine which method to put your resources into. A combination of the two will work in most situations. It will also depend on what you are trying to achieve. To begin improving your soil in order to plant a fruit tree, or indeed a small orchard, you would begin by improving the soil in the immediate vicinity of the root zone and then thickly layer mulches around the tree over time. When planting your tree, a hole 500mm wide and 4-500mm deep would be a good start. Half of the soil (or sand as it may be) can be blended with a good composted manure or garden compost and can go back into the hole. The remaining soil from the hole can be used to create a wide bowl around the tree or simply dispersed. Once the tree is planted and irrigation installed, thick layers of composted mulches can be put down beyond the expected drip zone and topped up annually for a few years.
To begin a productive vegetable garden you can either build or buy a raised bed and fill it with a quality compost blend which will give you great growth for the first couple of seasons. If you choose to grow at ground level though you will need to improve the soil initially and continue to add organic matter a couple of times a year, otherwise your garden soils will be rendered hollow and sandy before you know it. Vigilant mulching is one way to delay the degradation of your soil, particularly if you use a mulch that is going to help build your soil over time such as green straws (peastraw, lucerne) or composted mulches. If you have a large area where you want to remove grasses and improve the soil, then you may want to employ a popular method known as sheet mulching. Many would have heard this method explained before and perhaps even experimented to a point. For sheet mulching to be effective though, thick layers need to be created and continued over 2-3 years. One season of sheet mulching is just not enough, and you’ll end up with cardboard or sand blowing all over the place. Our coastal sandy soils require a certain level of attention in order for our edible plants to flourish. But once the soil is improved you’ll be able to grow just about anything.
Happy gardening.

It has been a remarkable decade at Luduco Living, which celebrates its 10th birthday in November and recently received two of the most coveted awards in the Australian furniture industry. Luduco was voted Top Studio in Australia for both the Stressless and IMG international brands out of more than 150 retail outlets across Australia. “It’s been a fantastic 10 years and over that period we have steadily grown in every sense,” said owner Jeremy Brook. “Thanks to the fantastic loyalty of our customers and our brilliant team our business has thrived and we continue to serve the local community with the best of furniture design and product quality backed by our award-winning customer service.” The awards were most unexpected, Jeremy said. “We were attending the annual Stressless AGM in Sydney as we do every year and the announcement was made that we had won the award for Australia. I was so surprised. “And amazingly within a week IMG made a similar presentation to us at their head office - so it’s been a great accolade for the business and the Luduco team and a wonderful way to celebrate this very special anniversary. “Our heartfelt thanks to all our customers - past, present and future.” LUDUCO LIVING A: 1128-1132 Nepean Highway, Mornington P: 5973 4899 W: Luducoliving.com.au
