Focus on Mornington

Beaches, wineries, shopping, arts and antiques are all at your fingertips in a township that dates back to 1856, where original historical buildings stand proudly among modern architecture.

Mornington Facts Mornington is a seaside town on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, Australia, located 57 km south-east of Melbourne’s central business district.

earthquake

An measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale struck the town on 2 September 1932 associated with the nearby Selwyn Fault. No injuries or major damage was reported.

The Mornington Pier was built in 1857, and continues to be extended and improved.

Mornington’s original post office, built in 1863 at the corner of Main Street and The Esplanade, now operates as a museum displaying old telecommunications equipment and items relating to local history. It is the site of the Mornington and District Historical Society. On the other side of Main Street is the old court house (built in 1860) and the former police station lock-up (1862).

Mornington has a long history dating back to 1802 when explorer Matthew Flinders landed at Schnapper Point. These days, Schnapper Point provides a boat-launching ramp, jetty, yacht club, restaurant and scenic walks providing scenic views along the coast.

Mornington has a number of beaches, some of which are located at the base of rocky cliffs which dominate part of the coastline in this area. Along the eastern side of Schnapper Point is the sheltered Mothers Beach and Scout Beach, while Shire Hall Beach and Mills Beach are located further east along the coast. Around a kilometre south of Schnapper Point is Fishermans Beach which ends at the scenic rocky outcrop of Linley Point where there are boat ramps and scenic viewing spots along the coast.

from The fossils were discovered in 1854 in the limestone cliffs. Most of the fossils have now been removed. Access is via the track from the cliff path near Bentons Road (near the picnic area).

Mornington Central Shopping Centre is built on the site of the former Mornington railway station.

The Mornington Rose Gardens has over 4000 roses planted in 86 beds and is surrounded by a border of native Australian trees and shrubs. The concept for the Mornington Rose Gardens was the brainchild of a local businessman Don Gordon who was inspired by the rose garden in Benalla that was situated next to the art gallery.

A grand old lady T

hrough the late 1800s, opulent coffee palaces sprang up across Australia in response to the temperance movement which sought to promote alcoholfree hotels. In 1889, Cornelius Crowley commissioned prominent architect William Pitt to build the Grand Coffee Palace in Main Street, Mornington. It was a twostorey brick building with three bays and a central tower. Next door was the Cricketers’ Arms Hotel, built in 1868 and also owned by Cornelius Crowley. In 1892 he transferred his liquor licence to the adjoining building and renamed it the Grand Hotel. The railway line reached Mornington in 1889 and the Grand was conveniently located as a destination for visitors. It also became the centre for official functions, especially sporting ones. The Grand has had over thirty licensees; some have stayed for just a few months and others for a number of years, but two are of special significance. The first was the Harrison family (1907-1918). Lou Harrison was very active in community affairs — of note, he was Chairman of the Mornington Racing Club and President of the Mornington Peninsula Football Association. Lou was also President of the Mornington Football Club for three years including 1915, when they won the premiership. The three Harrison boys (Lou Jr., George and Tom) all played football for Mornington and George was being groomed to take over the running of the Grand. Then came World War One: George was one of the first to enlist from Mornington. He was evacuated twice from Gallipoli, only to be killed in France in 1916. Then Lou Sr., aged 51, died suddenly at the Grand in August 1918 and the Harrison era

came to an abrupt end. Over the course of its life, the hotel has had a number of makeovers. The first was in 1919, when the building was extended and renovated internally. Further renovations took place in the late 1940s but 1948 saw the removal of the tower, which had been a landmark for sixty years. Apparently it had developed a bit of a tilt, swaying considerably in windy weather. The second significant period of ownership of at Grand has been that of Bernard John Taylor (1976-present). Almost forty years after taking over the licence, Bernie Taylor still keeps an eye on things even though the day-to-day management is in the hands of his daughter (Pir) and son-in-law (Cameron Price). Cameron was named as the licensee in 2012. Exactly two years to the day after Bernie took over, major alterations and renovations commenced. Since then, further alterations have taken place to accommodate the arrival of Pub Tab (1991), poker machines (1992) and alfresco dining in front of the hotel (1994). However, perhaps the most significant alteration to the structure was the realization of one of Bernie’s dreams: the reinstatement of the iconic tower (1987). The building has been expanded but always with its heritage in mind so that it still retains the charm of the magnificent Grand Coffee Palace of 1889 Today, the Grand hosts music and events, and dishes up some of the best pub meals on the Peninsula. admiral arkle

A nautical themed English-style tavern A

dmiral Arkle’s restaurant and tavern sits upon the place he once entertained his English friends. His lodgings were known to have raucous parties and brilliant games of rummy. This nautical-themed restaurant specializes in seafood. It also offers dining and drinking on the spacious balcony overlooking Main Street and The Admiral’s old drinking establishment Brass Razu. Admiral Arkle is also perfect for large functions, for groups up to 120 people. Perfect for birthday and Christmas parties and pirate themed affairs! This gastro-pub style restaurant and bar houses Admiral Arkle’s lost maritime treasures and stories. Meet his nemesis Captain Diablos, learn about sirens, all whilst enjoying a big bowl of Mount Martha mussels, Jack Daniel’s chicken wings and ale on tap. A secret vice of the Admiral was his love of whisky, and so it is fitting that his descendants offer an amazing whisky selection to their patrons. With 30 whiskeys on offer it will be hard to just choose one, or two … There is also an eclectic selection of English gins. Ask the bartender which garnish complements your choice of gin, from blackberries, strawberries and oranges. Alternatively, if you’re more of a rum-lover, you will enter a journey across the seas with Pusser’s British Navy and end up with an El Dorado 15 year old, but beware of the Kraken. Of course the Admiral also boasts a well-stocked wine list by the bottle or glass, sourced from his world travels. The menu changes with each season, from home-made Kilkenny and Beef pies during the winter, to calamari salads during summer.

22

The Admiral’s signature meals have to be the bangers and mash; marinated in beer, served with caramelised onions and a Yorkshire pudding; and their mouth-watering Seafood platter. Not to mention their ever-changing weekly specials. Of course there are many options for vegetarians and vegans like the warm beetroot salad and stuffed mushrooms, perfect for every family member to enjoy. But don’t forget to stay for dessert and have one of the special weekly sweets, like apple and rhubarb crumble, perfect with a banana bread beer. The Admiral was certainly a heroic maritime figure back in the 1800s, but he was also quite the ladies’ man. So he knows a good Prosecco and a cheeky cocktail is sometimes what a ladies’ night calls for whilst you watch the evening sunset. Planning on having a romantic date? Perhaps enjoy a pre-dinner drink on the cosy couches under candlelight looking down at the street below, followed by a bottle of wine and dinner at the ‘Captain’s Table’; an intimate ship-table that sits two adults, as you let the night of conversation and the Admiral’s travels wash over you. Open from Wednesday - Sunday, with all day lunch on Sundays, there’s always a time to meet the Admiral. So, come aboard and learn about his adventures with swashbuckling pirates, Poseidon’s sea storms, and about the man himself, Admiral Arkle. Admiral Arkle is at Upstairs, 25A Main Street Phone 03 5976 7379. www.admiralarkle.com.au

the brass razu

Over 350 wines by the bott le! “

I say sir, we disembarked one morning in a place we would come to know as Mornington. I found this coin on the shores of this new land. I had no belongings, lost at sea, you see. ‘Twas the only thing I had, nothing but this Brass Razoo” – Admiral Arkle 1796. To this day, the famous coin is framed in Brass Razu’s fireplace room. We’re not entirely sure the story is true, but this wine bar was the first of its kind on the Mornington Peninsula. Eleven years later and it’s still the place to go for a wine and cheeseboard. What makes Brass a little quirky is the different rooms it offers. The main bar twinkles with chandeliers and great paintings from yesteryear. Live music occurs every Friday night from Celtic Folk to Acoustic Rock; toetapping, head-rocking music; a perfect match to one of the 24 wines by the glass. The next room has a cozy fireplace with shelves filled with grandma’s knick-knacks, miniature portraits and even a model of the ship Admiral Arkle once set sail in hundreds of years ago, (again this may or may not be true). The last room is called the Velvet Room. Imagine Baroque lounges and velvet curtains covering the walls. This long boudoir-style area hosts intimate functions, from 21sts, to 60ths. According to Admiral Arkle’s journal it was once an Opium Den for the officers of noble birth. A little secret courtyard also welcomes those who wish to enjoy the warm weather, with

EA T + DR IN K

nothing but the sound of Edith Piaf playing in the background. Fairy lights turn on as the sky turns dark. It’s certainly a romantic spot. There are over 350 wines by the bottle which was awarded with a ‘2 Wine Glass Rating’ by the Australia’s Wine List of the Year Awards 2017 and 2018. But if wine isn’t for you, you can enjoy a wondrous, quirky cocktail instead. From a Salted Caramel Espresso Martini to the magical Unicorn Tears, which sparkles from our secret ingredient. Brass Razu isn’t a restaurant but it does serve a delicious tapas menu all day long, from 12pm until midnight on weekends. This means you can enjoy some great grub whenever you’re hungry, because who doesn’t crave a prosciutto and fig pizza and a belgian apple tart? A vast selection of spirits, (which includes many local gins), boutique and local beers will keep any drinker satisfied, but it’s the atmosphere that will keep you coming back for more. Brass is the place on Main Street to enjoy a cocktail or wine, but it’s the friendly staff, the cosy rooms and the memories of great nights that bring people back for more. Admiral Arkle may or may not have inspired this eclectic wine bar. But one thing is for certain. It wouldn’t be Main Street without it. The Brass Razu is at 13 Main Street. Diamond Coco specialises in supplying highquality engagement rings and bridal jewelery, wedding bands and anniversary/eternity rings. They also stock a range of beautiful bracelets, earrings, and necklaces. Alternatively, you can choose a diamond from their collection and have it set in your own unique design. “Many of our customers wish to purchase a diamond engagement ring and we are proud to be involved in such an important purchase,” said Anthony. “Our promise to you is that we will never sell you a poor quality diamond despite their low prices.” When it comes to buying an engagement ring, Anthony helps guide customers through the purchase process.

Expect to pay around half the price! FOR AN APPOINTMENT CALL

“So first things first; are you going to go it alone or involve your partner? Some brides very much want to be involved whereas others may be looking to be swept off their feet with a surprise proposal. There is no right or wrong way… just a lot of hints usually. If you choose to buy the ring together, then you will undoubtedly find various aspects much easier such as getting the ring size right. But what about budget? Sometimes there is mutual understanding of fiscal restraints while other times there can be a very broad difference in expectations. It might be best set that budget after you have been to a few stores first.”

Anthony says if you choose to buy the ring as a surprise it is important to concentrate on the diamond and less on the ring design unless you really know what she likes.

mornington railway

AT TR AC TI ON S

Take a ride on one of few K class locos still operating in Victoria today T

he steam train from Baxter to Mornington made its first journey on 10 September 1889, much to the delight of locals. Morningtonians were over the moon to have an alternative to ships which so often were subject to the vagaries of Port Phillip, or the rutted dirt road from Frankston which was impassable in bad weather. The train brought a new level of prosperity to traders as a reliable transport link gave more opportunity to tourists flocking to the town for holidays and day trips. The centrepiece of the Historic Mornington Railway is the train hauled by locomotive K163, which was withdrawn from service in 1966 at Ararat, rescued by Frankston Apex Club and transported to Jubilee Park in Frankston in November 1973 where it spent 11 years as a static tourist attraction before being sold to the newly formed railway society in 1984. The 80 or so Mornington Railway volunteers keep the tradition of steam trains alive and run trips on three Sundays every month from Moorooduc to Mornington. Operating days attract over 500 passengers and delight young and old as they steam down the line just like days of old. Steeped in history the station’s 27 acre home base locataed across from the Moorooduc Coolstores, is a magnet for railway buffs; full of rescued and donated equipment including

milling machines, band saws, a power hacksaw, metal presses and rail carriages; some looking as good as the day they were built while others are waiting to be restored. As the pace of life speeds up and people pursue the latest gadgets, traveling on a steam train still fascinates many. What better way to spend a Sunday than rolling down to Mornington aboard an historic train carriage hauled by K163, its whistle sounding as it passes through crossings and smoke pouring from the loco to remind us of days when steam was king of railroads around the world? Tickets to ride Mornington Railway operates three Sundays a month and on special occasions. Return tickets: $16 adults, $8 children, $13 concession, $43 family (two adults and two children). Children under four travel free. www.morningtonrailway.org.au

Beleura house A Mornington treasure B

eleura, built in 1863 by James Butchart on land purchased at Schnapper Point (now Mornington), was described as the finest mansion in the colony. Subsequently owned by a succession of rich, powerful and successful families, it was purchased in 1916 by George Tallis and was the summer retreat for his family for many decades. In 1950 it became the home of Jack Morton Tallis by family agreement, and his life thereafter was dedicated to the preservation of Beleura.

James Butchart, the builder of Beleura, had amassed a fortune by supplying the miners on the goldfields of Ballarat, Bendigo and Castlemaine with many of the things they needed. When he retired in 1862, at the age of forty, he leased and subsequently bought land at Schnapper Point and set about building Beleura, a twelve-roomed Italianate villa. It had a large garden and carriageway, which remains to this day. Recent research indicates the architect was Joseph Reed of the firm Reed and Barnes, the same architects who designed the Melbourne Town Hall, the Royal Exhibition Building, the State Library and Melbourne Trades Hall. James Butchart had little time to enjoy Beleura, which was completed in 1865. It is said James Butchart died on the front steps of Beleura in 1869. Enterprising and successful Melbourne businessman Charles Edward Bright acquired

58

Beleura after the death of James Butchart. Caleb Joshua Jenner, another successful businessman, leased Beleura in 1883 and used it as a summer retreat, before purchasing the property in 1888. Robert Smith, a pastoralist, purchased the property in 1899. Following Robert Smith’s death in 1904, ownership of Beleura passed to his widow, Jane. William Ernest Albert Edgwick, another grazier, acquired Beleura in 1911 and is believed to be responsible for painting the exterior for the first time. In 1915, William Edgwick sold to a syndicate which subdivided Beleura and its 160 acres, renaming it “Beleura on the Sea.” In 1916, Beleura was acquired by George and Amelia Tallis to be once again used as a summer retreat. Upon their passing, the property was left to their four childen, and

their son John Tallis, as he preferred to be known became the caretaker. John Tallis built on the Italianate influences of the original design and made a series of changes to the interior and exterior of Beleura. John Tallis died in 1996 and bequeathed Beleura and its considerable contents to the people of Victoria, requesting that it become a house museum. In November, 2004, his dream was realized and Beleura and its gardens are now open to the public in the way he wished. Guided tours are scheduled on selected days throughout the year. Visitors are collected from a nearby location and transferred to Beleura in a courtesy bus. Tea, coffee, shortbread, and a light lunch are served to guests. The tour takes approximately four and a half hours. The cost is $39 ($36 concession) and bookings can be arranged by phoning 5975 2027.
