Focus on Mornington Beaches, wineries, shopping, arts and antiques are all at your fingertips in a township that dates back to 1856, where original historical buildings stand proudly among modern architecture.

MORNINGTON FACTS Mornington is a seaside town on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, Australia, located 57 km south-east of Melbourne’s central business district.

An earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale struck the town on 2 September 1932 associated with the nearby Selwyn Fault. No injuries or major damage was reported.

The Mornington Pier was built in 1857, and continues to be extended and improved in 2016.

Mornington’s original post office, built in 1863 at the corner of Main Street and The Esplanade, now operates as a museum displaying old telecommunications equipment and items relating to local history. It is the site of the Mornington and District Historical Society. On the other side of Main Street is the old court house (built in 1860) and the former police station lock-up (1862).

Mornington has a long history dating back to 1802 when explorer Matthew Flinders landed at Schnapper Point. These days, Schnapper Point provides a boat-launching ramp, jetty, yacht club, restaurant and scenic walks providing scenic views along the coast.

Fossil beach is a significant fossil site with evidence of Australia’s sea life from

10 to 15 million years ago.

The fossils were discovered in 1854 in the limestone cliffs. Most of the fossils have now been removed. Access is via the track from the cliff path near Bentons Road (near the picnic area).

The first cruise ship visited Mornington township on February 24, 2015, after P&O added the Mornington Peninsula to its itinerary. The Pacific Pearl with 1800 residents on board docked early on the Tuesday morning, part of a new itinerary for P&O Cruises.

Mornington Central Shopping Centre is built on the site of the former Mornington railway station.

Mornington has a number of beaches, some of which are located at the base of rocky cliffs which dominate part of the coastline in this area. Along the eastern side of Schnapper Point is the sheltered Mothers Beach and Scout Beach, while Shire Hall Beach and Mills Beach are located further east along the coast. Around a kilometre south of Schnapper Point is Fishermans Beach which ends at the scenic rocky outcrop of Linley Point where there are boat ramps and scenic viewing spots along the coast.

The Mornington Rose Gardens has over 4000 roses planted in 86 beds and is surrounded by a border of native Australian trees and shrubs. The concept for the Mornington Rose Gardens was the brainchild of a local businessman Don Gordon who was inspired by the rose garden in Benalla that was situated next to the art gallery.

Mornington’s Darkest Hour The boating disaster of 1892 THE Mornington Football Club, formed in 1888, had arranged to play a social game against Mordialloc on Saturday May 21, 1892. Although the railway connection to Frankston had been completed, the majority of the players accepted the invitation of Charles Hooper, a 35 year old member of the team, who was an experienced sailor and fisherman, to use his boat “Process” for a sea trip to the game. So most of the team set out after lunch on that fateful Saturday on the journey that was to mark the greatest tragedy in Australia’s sporting history. The 15 mile (24 kilometre) trip was uneventful with William Coles entertaining his teammates with a medley of cornet tunes. Included in his repertoire was the song “The Ship That Never Returned”; his companions, singing lustily, were never to appreciate the irony contained in that song. The football match against Mordialloc was a draw with both sides scoring two goals; behinds did not count in those days. The “Process” left Mordialloc around 6 o’clock with all fifteen travellers reported to be sober and in good spirits.

20

mainstreetmornington.com.au

/MainStreetMornington

The last time the fifteen were seen alive was off Frankston when some fishermen heard the men singing and said later that the boat appeared to be travelling without any trouble. No one knows what happened next but it is believed that a sudden squall hit the vessel as it approached Pelican Point, off Mt. Eliza. The “Process” capsized, throwing the occupants into the sea. One can only imagine the sheer terror in the minds of the unlucky footballers as they fought in the darkness for a grip of the vessel, only to be washed off by the waves. Exhaustion soon ended the struggle. Any that tried to swim for the shore did not make it. All were drowned. That Saturday night was to become the blackest ever in the history of Mornington. There was a general build up of concern as the hours passed and many families went down to the pier to watch for any sign of the “Process.” Early on Sunday morning there were as many as 22 boats and skiffs out searching along the coast. It was not long before the upturned “Process” was found lying off Pelican reef. The upturned boat was towed back to Mornington and, when righted, the body of Alfred Lawrence was found tangled in the rigging. When the boat was examined there were marks /MainStreetMornington

and scratches on the bottom, as if made by the passengers clawing at the hull endeavouring to get a grip. During the Sunday and for many days afterwards there were many vessels out searching, and over the next few weeks three more bodies were found on beaches as far apart as Rye and Mt. Eliza. A public meeting at Mornington established a committee for the relief of the victims’ dependents. Football clubs throughout Victoria gave generously and over sixteen hundred pounds was raised; of this seventy-five pounds was set aside to erect the memorial located on the corner of The Esplanade and Schnapper Point Drive. In retrospect it is hard to grasp the enormity of the sadness and hardship that this event brought to the little seaside village which was nicknamed “Mourningtown” by some in the press. Particularly poignant was the lot of the Presbyterian minister, the Reverend James Caldwell: not only was he required to comfort the bereaved, but he had to come to terms with the loss of three sons in the tragedy. He attempted to meet his obligations on that dreadful Sunday morning, but it was too much: “Some had betaken themselves to church, but so far as the Presbyterians, at least, were concerned, there had been a sudden end to the service. The officiating minister, Mr. Caldwell, broke down in the middle of prayers, and was compelled to beg the indulgence of the congregation.” (The Argus, May 23, 1892.)

FOOTNOTE. “Fifteen Young Men”, a comprehensive account of the tragedy by ABC sports presenter Paul Kennedy, was published earlier this year.

Storm Front A fascination for nature WITH their dark, ominous clouds and heavy textures, storms hold a particular fascination for peninsula photographer Yanni Dellaportas.

Storm clouds roll in so quickly and change rapidly so you don’t have much time to get the image. You have to shoot quickly.

Born and bred on the peninsula, Yanni has been working as a photographer for almost 30 years.

Sometimes when I am driving and a cloud formation catches my eye, I will stop straight away to photograph it. Other times, I will go up to a high vantage point to capture the images. I like to have something else in the image to give perspective on where it was taken, as a representation of the peninsula”.

“Most of my storm photos are taken around mid winter and January, which is when we usually experience the most storm activity on the peninsula.

Brass Razu Come in for a drink or two “I say sir, we disembarked one morning in a place we would come to know as Mornington. I found this coin on the shores of this new land. I had no belongings, lost at sea, you see. ‘Twas the only thing I had, nothing but this Brass Razoo” – Admiral Arkle 1796. To this day, the famous coin is framed in Brass Razu’s fireplace room. We’re not entirely sure if the story is true, but this wine bar was the first of its kind on the Mornington Peninsula. Ten years later and it’s still the place to go for a wine and cheeseboard. What makes “Brass” a little quirky is the different rooms it offers. The Main Bar twinkles with chandeliers and great paintings from yesteryear. The room entertains fabulous themed events like Swing Night, Brass-O-Ween (their annual All Hallow’s Eve event) and even a Johnny Cash night. The next room has a cozy fireplace with shelves filled with grandma’s knick-knacks, miniature portraits and even a model of the ship Admiral Arkle once set sail in hundreds of years ago. (Again, this may or may not be true!) The last room is called the Velvet Room. Imagine Baroque lounges and velvet curtains covering the walls. This long boudoir-style area hosts intimate functions, from 21sts, to 60ths. According to Admiral Arkle’s journal it was once an Opium Den for the officers of noble birth.

Brass Razu isn’t a restaurant but it does serve a delicious tapas menu all day long, from 12pm until midnight on weekends. This means you can enjoy some great grub whenever you’re hungry, because who doesn’t crave a midnight pizza with a side of churros? Anyone? Anyone?!! A vast selection of spirits and boutique beers will keep any drinker satisfied but it’s the atmosphere that will keep you coming back for more. Perhaps it was the Disney Night that had you experiencing your childhood all over again, or the gritty voice of Bern Carroll live on a Friday night that had you up and dancing with the girls. Or the first date you had on a rainy Thursday night with the love of your life? Because that’s happened too.

A little secret courtyard also welcomes those who wish to enjoy the warm weather, with nothing but the sound of Edith Piaf playing in the background. Fairy lights turn on as the sky turns dark. It’s certainly a romantic spot.

Admiral Arkle may or may not have inspired this eclectic wine bar. But one thing is for certain. It wouldn’t be Main Street without it.

Live music occurs every Friday night from Celtic folk to acoustic rock; toe-tapping, head-rocking music; a perfect match to one of the 24 wines by the glass. But if wine isn’t for you, you can enjoy a wondrous, quirky cocktail instead. From the classic Negroni, to the flamboyant Nutella Bomb which has a rim of sprinkles and a token ‘cherry on top’.

The Grand Hotel A grand old lady THROUGH the late 1800s, opulent coffee palaces sprang up across Australia in response to the temperance movement which sought to promote alcoholfree hotels. In 1889, Cornelius Crowley commissioned prominent architect William Pitt to build the Grand Coffee Palace in Main Street, Mornington. It was a two-storey brick building with three bays and a central tower. Next door was the Cricketers’ Arms Hotel, built in 1868 and also owned by Cornelius Crowley. In 1892 he transferred his liquor licence to the adjoining building and renamed it the Grand Hotel. The railway line reached Mornington in 1889 and the Grand was conveniently located as a destination for visitors. It also became the centre for official functions, especially sporting ones. The Grand has had over thirty licensees; some have stayed for just a few months and others for a number of years, but two are of special significance. The first was the Harrison family (1907-1918). Lou Harrison was very active in community affairs — of note, he was Chairman of the Mornington Racing Club and President of the Mornington Peninsula Football Association. Lou was also President of the Mornington Football Club for three years including 1915, when they won the premiership. The three Harrison boys (Lou Jr., George and Tom) all played football for Mornington and George was

30

mainstreetmornington.com.au

being groomed to take over the running of the Grand. Then came World War One: George was one of the first to enlist from Mornington. He was evacuated twice from Gallipoli, only to be killed in France in 1916. Then Lou Sr., aged 51, died suddenly at the Grand in August 1918 and the Harrison era came to an abrupt end. Over the course of its life, the hotel has had a number of makeovers. The first was in 1919, when the building was extended and renovated internally. Further renovations took place in the late 1940s but 1948 saw the removal of the tower, which had been a landmark for sixty years. Apparently it had developed a bit of a tilt, swaying considerably in windy weather. The story goes that it would have cost 75 pounds ($150) to have the tower made safe and 50 pounds ($100) to have it removed. The fact that the licensee’s sleeping quarters were immediately below may also have been a deciding factor in consigning it to the tip! The second significant period of ownership of at Grand has been that of Bernard John Taylor (1976-present). Almost forty years after taking over the licence, Bernie Taylor still keeps an eye on things even though the day-to-day management is in the hands of his daughter (Pir) and son-in-law (Cameron Price). Cameron was named as the licensee in 2012.

/MainStreetMornington

Exactly two years to the day after Bernie took over, major alterations and renovations commenced. Since then, further alterations have taken place to accommodate the arrival of Pub Tab (1991), poker machines (1992) and alfresco dining in front of the hotel (1994). However, perhaps the most significant alteration to the structure was the realization of one of Bernie’s dreams: the reinstatement of the iconic tower (1987). The building has been expanded but always with its heritage in mind so that it still retains the charm of the magnificent Grand Coffee Palace of 1889 Today, the Grand hosts music and events, and dishes up some of the best pub meals on the Peninsula. 124 Main St 5975 2001 www.grand.net.au

Biscottini

Fine foods and a face lift! ELIO Giucastro knows a thing or two about fine foods. From exquisite Italian dining to specialty cakes, pastries and other treats – or even just a stellar coffee – Biscottini on Main Street provides a wide range of dining experiences, from a sit-down restaurant to on-the-go cafe takeaway. The store itself has just had a facelift, with extensive renovations to the dining and kitchen areas – be one of the first this holiday period to enjoy the new Biscottini! But there’s no reason to limit your visit to the Mornington Peninsula’s silly summer season. They’re open year round from 7am (8 on Sundays) and start whipping up their incredible range of delicacies well before the doors open.

From bite-sized creamy cheesecakes and melt-in-your-mouth brownies to multi-storey, custom-crafted wedding cakes, there is not a specialty sweet that Elio and the team can’t create for you, whatever the occasion. But if you’re just after a cooked breakfast, come in and grab a seat. Whether you’re at the cutting edge of healthy options like sautéed kale with asparagus and smashed avocado on single-origin sourdough with marinated Persian fetta, or deeply traditional with your big cooked breakfast, Biscottini will make an art of it. Check out their Facebook page for more details: www.facebook.com/ BiscottiniCafe/

Not your typical pub MORNINGTON’S Royal Hotel is not just a local architectural icon. It’s the premier place for fine food and wine or a night or two in their quaint upstairs rooms, replete with private balconies and bay views sure to satisfy any holidaymaker with an eye for history. Philippa and her family took over the business late in 2012, having been “born and bred” in the world of hospitality. “MY parents started Walter’s Wine Bar, which was at Southgate for 21 years, and prior to that had Walter and Maria’s Restaurant for 18 years… it’s in the blood,” she explains. With a focus on the food and beverages, the Royal provides a refreshing change of scenery from the more traditional pokies pub, with open fireplaces, a cosy tavern and outdoor area beset by sea breeze. “Our major drawcard is the sensational location, with beautiful beer gardens that overlook Port Philip

Bay.” Add to that the fact that the Royal is open 365 days of the year, including for Christmas lunch and you’ve got a winning formula. Tuesday nights are ‘Royal Tuesdays’, geared towards the younger crowd, while on Saturdays they’ve got live music in the tavern. There’s usually an acoustic solo or duo performing, and the tunes make for a wonderful ambience. But if you’re talking about year-round dining says Phillipa, “we come to the market on a different level. We call ourselves a gastropub… basically a top-notch offering using great quality produce.” “Combined with vintage open fireplaces, the standard of dining at the Royal Hotel is high.” We’ve got two fireplaces in the restaurant area and one rather large one in the tavern. Over winter they become very popular attractions!” It pairs perfectly with their waterfront accommodation. “Our boutique hotel /MainStreetMornington

rooms are all beautifully renovated and restored to reflect the age and beauty of the Victorian-style building.” It’s not something you’ll find anywhere else on the Mornington Peninsula, and the Royal’s proximity to Main Street, the beaches and the newly-restored pier precinct make it an ideal choice for both locals and tourists, for lunch, dinner, a place to stay or even just a cold drink on a hot day. Main Desire High quality fashion and gifts

SLOTTING Main Desire into just one category might be helpful for those working on the business directory, but it’s a grave disservice to try and pigeonhole the store’s multi-hybrid offerings. From clothing, jewelery, bags and accessories through books, travel gear and children’s’ toys to boutique decor, art, candles and even furniture, the sheer variety of products on offer at Main Desire can be intimidating at first. But when you really see the quality of the goods on offer and the subtle-yet-complementary aesthetics, smells and other sensory stimuli, you’ll realise it’s much more than several specialty stores packed into one small boutique! It’s a painstakingly-selected range of quality products across diverse categories that the discerning buyer will appreciate, whether as a gift for themselves, or an accessory for the home. Looking to accessorise? Main Desire will kit you out with

Studio 41 Design, create, rejuvenate “DESIGN, create, rejuvenate” is the motto at Studio41, one of the Mornington Peninsula’s and indeed Australia’s finest artisan jewellery stores. Owner and operator Elayne has almost 40 years of experience creating and recreating jewellery, sculptures and other hand-crafted set pieces. People come from all over the country to see her work first-hand. Although their core business is “jewellery for special occasions,” Studio41 goes wider and deeper into the custom sphere than your average jeweller. Elayne explains that “a lot of people supply us with their own stones or gold, which we can melt and recreate into something new.”

From the consultation, which can last anywhere from 20 minutes up to several hours, through to creation and delivery, the process generally takes a few weeks. For a piece that’s guaranteed to be completely individual in a world where nothing is truly original any longer, Elayne and the crew are worth the patience. Like the relationship it signifies, this jewellery is a labour of love, and there’s nobody better at this than the Studio41 crew. 41 Main St 5973 5356 www.studio41.com.au

Main Street Eyecare Funky frames & exquisite designs “MELBOURNE funky at Mornington prices” is Kaye’s motto at Main Street Eye Care. She carries on a long tradition of optometry and eye care from their Main Street location, which has been occupied by a optometrist since opening in the 1930s. Kaye and her three optometrists can custom fit anything from contact lenses to custom-built spectacles, with fashion a driving principle in their designs. “After all, we don’t always wear the same clothes and the same shoes, so why would we wear the same glasses?” It’s a good question. Having run the business since 2000, Kaye and her team are “passionate about getting the right frame that suits and fits, coupled with the right lenses.”

They support other Australian businesses too – “about 90% of what we sell is Australian designed, and a lot of it’s made here too.” Everything they do supports local jobs. Whether it’s discreet contact lenses or occasional-use reading specs, Main Street Eye Care use local labs for all their lenses, so If you want the best of the best in design, build and fit, have a look at Main Street Eye Care. Gravity Streetwear Gravity has you covered WHEN you want to look your best, chances are you’ll need a little advice. Brothers Anthony and Arthur are Gravity Streetwear’s resident professionals, and they’re here to help. Their Mornington store, having opened on Boxing Day 2014 is two years old. Recognising that a lot of Peninsula boutiques cater for youth or high fashion, the lack of decent offerings for the 30-55 age bracket was a gaping hole in the market they sought to take advantage of. “You’ve got your Gazman, town and country stores, but then it falls away to your “cool for school” surf shops. I’m a shopper too, and most of us guys in that

demographic work full time, have our rent and loans to pay off, so we want to get in and out of the shops, enjoy our hobbies and get back to work”, says Anthony”. purchase process. “So first things first; are you going to go it alone or involve your partner? Some brides very much want to be involved whereas others may be looking to be swept off their feet with a surprise proposal. There is no right or wrong way… just a lot of hints usually. If you choose to buy the ring together, then you will undoubtedly find various aspects much easier such as getting the ring size right. But what about budget? Sometimes there is mutual understanding of fiscal restraints while other times there can be a very broad difference in expectations. It might be best set that budget after you have been to a few stores first.” Anthony says if you choose to buy the ring as a surprise it is important to concentrate on the diamond and less on the ring design unless you really know what she likes.

Mark Gray

A wild ride DO a search for landscape photography on Google and the number one result will be Mornington’s very own Mark Gray. He’s a professional landscape photographer with 118 various awards from all over the planet – little wonder then that his business is growing, with his expanded gallery at 65 Main Street. “I’ve only ever shot landscapes. When they start their landscape photography journey, a lot of people go down the path of doing weddings and portraiture to make ends meet. I was able to run a web design business on the side while I was building my photography business, so I ran the two consecutively until I had enough income to make the change.” You’ll now find his collections in

homes and galleries in 29 different countries, sold both online and from his retail outlet. He hasn’t looked back. Earlier last year, the second print of his ‘Dawn Sentinel’ photograph sold to a Perth-based collector for $30,000, with the third and final print selling for $60,000. It’s a rare piece, taken at dawn in Cape Schanck overlooking the Bass Strait, and is a stellar example of why he’s in such high demand. “The Mornington store has done so well we decided to expand; taking over the old Trigger Bros. space last year and it’s been great.” Where many people pursue their passion, interest or hobby for a lifetime or more with little success, Mark actually started out in web design before transitioning to photography.

The gallery embraces traditional and contemporary art in all its forms, ensuring there’s something for everyone. National touring exhibitions and MPRGcurated exhibitions offer a rich cultural experience for the local community as well as visitors to the region – many travelling the easy distance from Melbourne to enjoy the Mornington Peninsula’s beautiful coastal scenery and hinterland.

MPRG

Leading regional gallery SINCE its establishment in 1971, Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery (MPRG) has grown to become one of Australia’s leading regional galleries, renowned for its exhibition program of Australian and international art.

“I’ve certainly always had a passion for art… I worked in graphic design before I started taking photos, working my way up from junior web designer to web manager in the field of internet marketing. It’s been a wild ride, but it’s certainly paid off.”

MPRG-curated exhibitions often explore the distinctive coastal environment and feature works by Australian artists with a connection to the Mornington Peninsula. The gallery also showcases its outstanding collection, which focuses on the cultural heritage of the Mornington Peninsula and contemporary Australian works on paper. Through events organised by the Gallery, visitors are able to engage more fully with the art and the artists. The Gallery conducts lectures, excursions, artist talks and workshops. It also has an important education program to help cultivate an interest in art in students of all year levels.

“Before he put it up for lease, dad offered it to us… it took nearly a year to go through council and renovate it, but it was quite a family event. Every weekend we’d go down and paint together,” Kristy explains.

Warehouse sales, photography and art exhibits, even yoga classes are just a small sample of what the three can do with the space. Josh is a talented illustrator who uses The Snake Hole to exhibit and sell his own work, while The Nook’s gallery out the front is available for anyone to rent and exhibit in.

Situated next door to the hot Commonfolk Coffee Company, the two premises pool floor space to stage events like the Maker’s Market, held in December. “We all run it together… myself and Josh are graphic designers, and Joel’s a builder, so we each take on different aspects,” says Kristy. “Josh had already started The

Harbour Dive Enjoy the deep blue with our highly-skilled instructors FOR more than 15 years, the family-run Harbour Dive has been proud of the unparalleled quality of their divers and staff. “We have been an instructor training facility for more than 11 years and ensure your safety and enjoyment at all times,” says general manager Cathy Warren, who runs the facility with her husband John. He’s the instructor trainer, while their daughter Melanie works as the dive travel coordinator.

swimming in cash or a sporting pro to enjoy the deep blue, but for those that do venture underwater regularly, there’s a range of professional and club-base expeditions on offer. Destinations include placid harbours like Nelson Bay and Port Phillip, to some of the best explorable shipwrecks in the Southern Hemisphere. John trains all the instructors on site, but staff also teach beginning divers during a two-day scuba course. “We also do boating licences now,” Cathy explains, noting how they’ve expanded to employ five permanent staff and another ten part-time or casual employees. “All of our training is done in the classroom or using the local Mornington pool,” so you’ll never be out of your depth with the team at Harbour Dive.

Together, they run courses regularly and usually dive locally, although they do go out as far as Blairgowrie on occasion and are always ready to jump in the boat to reach an exotic underwater destination. The dedicated and highly-skilled team backing them up includes “a lovely crew of instructors, dive staff and dive control specialists,” and following renovations last year, Harbour Dive is now “one of the biggest dive shops in Victoria!”

Mornington’s historic homestead NESTLED away in the forested hills north of Mornington is a historic homestead, with a garden of botanic aura. A bevy of colourful colonial characters passed through this property over the course of the 19th century, some as owners, others as investors or statesanctioned custodians. But it was Sir George and Lady Tallis who became the property’s most significant advocate and historical figures. He went on to own more than 800 hectares of arable land in and around Mornington, but as the years went by and city-dwellers came to settle, most of this was developed into the area we now know as Beleura Hill. All that remains of the acres of farmland George Tallis annexed

From his humble beginnings as a reporter for an Irish newspaper, through his love for theatre and composition of music to the breeding of Scottish cattle, Tallis always had an eye on the future. He had a unique understanding of the momentous assets at his disposal. Rather than accumulate the spoils of his life as family money chose to bequeath a great deal to the state of Victoria, leaving the immaculate ‘Beleura’ property for the eternal enjoyment of locals and tourists alike. Tours and events are run multiple times every week. It’s always worth seeing the curator’s latest efforts – the garden looks as good in the

Counting Wealth Taking the complexity out of financial management AS a CPA Firm, the team at Counting Wealth can deal with almost any financial issue – from simple tax returns, to negative gearing on property, investments and capital gains, GST issues, business advice and even self-managed superannuation funds. Having worked in public practice for 20 years, Veronica D’Silva, CPA, witnessed firsthand the struggle many people have with tax and business planning. It prompted the decision to start her own accounting and business advisory firm right here in Mornington. “We try to help businesses reach their full potential by combining the best tax advice with the most practical management techniques,” she explains, adding that her Counting Wealth practice provides “creative solutions by gathering successful people” who pool their specialised areas of expertise and share that knowledge with clients, providing a complete service. Veronica’s passion is actually working with people,
