Focus on Mornington Beaches, wineries, shopping, arts and antiques are all at your fingertips in a township that dates back to 1856, where original historical buildings stand proudly among modern architecture.
MORNINGTON FACTS Mornington is a seaside town on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, Australia, located 57 km south-east of Melbourne’s central business district. It is in the local government area of the Shire of Mornington Peninsula. Mornington has an area of 13.5 km². Population is 22,421 (2011). Mornington’s original post office, built in 1863 at the corner of Main Street and The Esplanade, now operates as a museum displaying old telecommunications equipment and items relating to local history. It is the site of the Mornington and District Historical Society. On the other side of Main Street is the old court house (built in 1860) and the former police station lock-up (1862). An earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale struck the town on 2 September 1932 associated with the nearby Selwyn Fault. No injuries or major damage was reported. The Mornington Pier was built in 1857, and continues to be extended and improved in 2015. Considered to be one of the worst boating accidents in Victoria’s history, the Mornington Football Club Disaster occurred on the night of May 21st 1892 near Pelican Point just north of Mornington. Fifteen members of the Mornington Football Team set out earlier that day on the “Process”, owned and skippered by Charles Hooper, to play a match at Mordialloc. The remainder of the team travelled by train. Mornington has a long history dating back to 1802 when explorer Matthew Flinders landed at Schnapper Point. These days, Schnapper Point provides a boat-launching ramp, jetty, yacht club, restaurant and scenic walks providing scenic views along the coast. Mornington has a number of beaches, some of which
6

are located at the base of rocky cliffs which dominate part of the coastline in this area. Along the eastern side of Schnapper Point is the sheltered Mothers Beach and Scout Beach, while Shire Hall Beach and Mills Beach are located further east along the coast. Around a kilometre south of Schnapper Point is Fishermans Beach which ends at the scenic rocky outcrop of Linley Point where there are boat ramps and scenic viewing spots along the coast. The first cruise ship visited Mornington township on February 24, 2015, after P&O added the Mornington Peninsula to its itinerary. The Pacific Pearl with 1800 residents on board docked early on the Tuesday morning, part of a new itinerary for P&O Cruises. Mornington Central Shopping Centre is built on the site of the former Mornington railway station. Every Wednesday, Mornington Main Street comes alive with the Street Market. Colourful stalls selling everything from hand made soaps, organic skin care, fresh produce and sensational home made fudge. Fossil beach is a significant fossil site with evidence of Australia’s sea life from 10 to 15 million years ago. The fossils were discovered in 1854 in the limestone cliffs. Most of the fossils have now been removed. Access is via the track from the cliff path near Bentons Road (near the picnic area).

The Mornington Rose Gardens has over 4000 roses planted in 86 beds and is surrounded by a border of native Australian trees and shrubs. The concept for the Mornington Rose Gardens was the brainchild of a local businessman Don Gordon who was inspired by the rose garden in Benalla that was situated next to the art gallery. The land was allocated for this purpose by Mornington Peninsula Shire Council after much lobbying by Don. He unfortunately passed away before he could see his dream become a reality. The first sod was turned by Councillor Anne Shaw on a freezing day in June 2004. The rose garden was built by volunteers during one of the longest droughts in Australia and has been hooked up to recycled water. The Mornington Rose Gardens was officially opened by the well-known gardener and radio and television personality Jane Edmanson in November 2008.

Mornington Through the Ages ORIGINALLY home to the Boonwurrung/Bunurong people, the place we’d eventually come to know as Mornington saw its first European visitor, Matthew Flinders, in 1802. With plentiful timber, renowned fish populations and pastoral leases up for grabs from the government of the day, it evolved into an important centre for commerce and trade south of Melbourne. First, a post office arrived in 1856, followed by construction of the pier in 1857, opening up one of Victoria’s few “deep water” ports. Before long, Schnapper Point had become an important legal and industrial hub for the wider peninsula, and was renamed Mornington (after a former British Foreign Secretary) in 1861. Connecting the thriving village to the rest of Victoria were the ferries and steamers of the harbour and the Mornington Railway, which opened in 1889 and ran all the way to Melbourne and beyond. As the district thrived the armed forces took an interest, thanks to suitable beachheads for training and proximity to the water. The first huts appeared on the Balcombe Army Camp grounds in the late 1930s. It’s always been a popular destination for tourists and holidaymakers. Melbourne’s wealthy elite built weekend mansions here through the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with notable properties like Beleura and Sunnyside still standing today. As schools and hospitals opened one by one, Mornington’s place in the Australian lexicon was cemented. Today, Mornington is a bustling commercial centre with every service you can imagine, be it health and wellbeing, beauty therapy, second-to-none coffee and food service, legal and accounting practitioners, new technology providers and plenty of great retail. Across the highway, the productive industrial district hosts just about every automotive service and brand you can think of, as well as a variety of small businesses and budding service firms – even its own brewery! Fashion is big here, too, so if you’re after the latest and greatest, look no further. For the history buffs, the Mornington Tourist Railway runs trains to and from historic Moorooduc station every weekend.

Mornington Park is home to many memorials, commemorative plaques and even an ANZAC centenary gazebo. The Mornington & District Historical Society, appropriately located in the original Schnapper Point post office, holds a veritable treasure trove of old artefacts and historical documents. Sport and fitness fanatics will love the area’s many recreational facilities. Civic Reserve is home to tennis, basketball, croquet, table tennis and gymnastics, Dallas Brooks Park is the home of soccer and Alexandra Park, present since the town’s inception, is the place for cricket. The newly-renovated pier precinct is the perfect place to find charter tours and fishing guides, or for a relaxing day on the beach… well, there’s no shortage of activities. Whether it’s boat hire you’re after, water sports or even a stroll down a coastal trail, you can find it here. Whatever your reason to visit, at any time of the year, Mornington’s the place to be. Mornington Community Information and Support Centre (320 Main Street, 5975 1644) will get you started, the Chamber of Commerce (103a Main Street, 5975 4522) will find the business you’re after and the Historical Society (789 The Esplanade, 5976 3203) will have you reminiscing about days gone by. There’s literally something for everyone in Mornington, where the shops meet the sea. Thanks to Mornington & District Historical Society and the State Library of Victoria.

The Grand Hotel A grand old lady.... THROUGH the late 1800s, opulent coffee palaces sprang up across Australia in response to the temperance movement which sought to promote alcohol-free hotels. In 1889, Cornelius Crowley commissioned prominent architect William Pitt to build the Grand Coffee Palace in Main Street, Mornington. It was a two-storey brick building with three bays and a central tower. Next door was the Cricketers’ Arms Hotel, built in 1868 and also owned by Cornelius Crowley. In 1892 he transferred his liquor licence to the adjoining building and renamed it the Grand Hotel. The railway line reached Mornington in 1889 and the Grand was conveniently located as a destination for visitors. It also became the centre for official functions, especially sporting ones. The Grand has had over thirty licensees; some have stayed for just a few months and others for a number of years, but two are of special significance. The first was the Harrison family (1907-1918). Lou Harrison was very active in community affairs — of note, he was Chairman of the Mornington Racing Club and President of the Mornington Peninsula Football Association. Lou was also President of the Mornington Football Club for three years including 1915, when they won the premiership. The three Harrison boys (Lou Jr., George and Tom) all played football for Mornington and George was being groomed to take over the running of the Grand. Then came World War One: George was one of the first to enlist from Mornington. He was evacuated twice from Gallipoli, only to be killed in France in 1916. Then Lou Sr., aged 51, died suddenly at the Grand in August 1918 and the Harrison era came to an abrupt end. Over the course of its life, the hotel has had a number of makeovers. The first was in 1919, when the building was extended and renovated internally. Further renovations took place in the late 1940s but 1948 saw the removal of the tower, which had been a landmark for sixty years. Apparently it had developed a bit of a tilt, swaying considerably in windy weather.
($150) to have the tower made safe and 50 pounds ($100) to have it removed. The fact that the licensee’s sleeping quarters were immediately below may also have been a deciding factor in consigning it to the tip! The second significant period of ownership of at Grand has been that of Bernard John Taylor (1976-present). Almost forty years after taking over the licence, Bernie Taylor still keeps an eye on things even though the day-to-day management is in the hands of his daughter (Pir) and son-in-law (Cameron Price). Cameron was named as the licensee in 2012. Exactly two years to the day after Bernie took over, major alterations and renovations commenced. Since then, further alterations have taken place to accommodate the arrival of Pub Tab (1991), poker machines (1992) and alfresco dining in front of the hotel (1994). However, perhaps the most significant alteration to the structure was the realization of one of Bernie’s dreams: the reinstatement of the iconic tower (1987). The building has been expanded but always with its heritage in mind so that it still retains the charm of the magnificent Grand Coffee Palace of 1889 Today, the Grand hosts music and events, and dishes up some of the best pub meals on the Peninsula. 124 Main St 5975 2001 www.grand.net.au

Tall Tales From the Small Screen The story behind Mornington Cinema IF you haven’t been to the Mornington cinema yet, you never really finished your maiden tour. With 3 screens and fully digital technology, Ian McCann will be happy to have you almost any night of the week. It doesn’t take long before you are on a first name basis with Ian. “Honestly, I think a lot of people have been coming here for a very long time. You’ll learn their names sooner or later... it’s an intimate little town.” But Ian wasn’t always so heavily invested with the day-to-day of the business. He held a management position at Channel Ten while his father got the place started…which, by the sound of it, took some effort.
Remnants of the analogue age reveal themselves in equal proportion to digital components. It’s surprising just how much space a 35mm reel takes up in the real world. But he remembers his first day like it was yesterday. “On the first night I came in, the programming… it was all wrong. The show opened with Breaking Ground, and the supporting feature was Porridge! Who’s going to hang around to see those two on the same night?! But, the double feature in those days, that was how we did it.”
“The only time in my life I’ve ever driven past a theatre and not stopped, was the grungy Mornington one. It was only four years old, yet looked unloved, uninviting, and rather unattractive in general!”
It helped a lot to have the sympathetic ear of his parents when starting out. “Mum and Dad were really supportive of me, Dad even retired just to give me a hand. On our first weekend, I said to Dad, ‘I’ll be happy to get 30 or 35 tonight.’ We got 223, in a theatre that was used to seeing eight or nine people a show. I was ecstatic!”
So he bought the place, spruced it up and, with a little help from his folks, turned a failing Main Street business into a unique and successful viewing experience. It affirmed Mornington’s hold over the lives of Ian and his family.
The inevitable move to digital, however, was a slightly less pleasant affair. Apart from the sheer cost of setting up even a single viewing theatre, the maintenance was something he admits he’ll struggle with on his own. He has technicians on retainer, but digital
14
mainstreetmornington.com.au

/MainStreetMornington
equipment – especially complex digital equipment that is purpose-built to handle terabytes of data – is costly to maintain. It’s one of the few things around the shop that he doesn’t actually do himself. Probably just as well. Cinema complexes are no small investment, and to void a warranty by attempting repairs on one’s own might not be the wisest idea. Then again, “stringing up one continuous piece of film all the way around the staff access areas for a double feature that you can’t play more than four minutes apart, is tedious, and a little wasteful. What you lose through digital in impersonality, you more than make up for in convenience.” His closest comparison in terms of business and operations was probably with Robert Kirby, who ran the four-screen cinema divided by Nepean Highway, right in the middle of Frankston back in the 90’s. He’d refused digital from day one, and even managed to undercut the new AMC theatre on ticket prices for a little while. But AMC won the day, and it cost Ian’s Frankston counterpart a lot. “I have a feeling the outcome would’ve been similar here had a cinema opened up at Centro,” Ian presciently reflects. But he’s still thriving, even though the move to digital alone cost tens of thousands of dollars, it was a necessity realised at the point where Ian was running out of new reels to rig up. But it’s an investment that shows faith in the future, and in the willingness of most of us to pay a fair price for a quality night out, especially at a time where high definition content can be downloaded in a matter of minutes from the comfort of one’s own home. Though you’d think it quiet during the week, “Monday is actually one of my business days,” says Ian. “On occasion, we’ve sold too many tickets… this little staff viewing area gets filled with extra seats!” The place hasn’t been the same since he lost his wife Tessa last year. “We basically split the duties 50/50, and while I just can’t do everything she used to do.“I’m getting by.” The thought of selling up did cross his mind, “many times. Many times I thought about that. But the more I thought about it, the more I realised it was a childhood dream I had to keep following.” They were, quite literally, a dynamic duo, and having the theatre all to yourself can be depressing. But with his level of stamina and a little bit of luck, he’ll be showing films in town for years to come. Main Street wouldn’t be the same without his little slice of culture – open most evenings, Ian is more than happy to show you to your seat. 1 Main St 5975 5141 www.morningtoncinemas.com.au

Inside, the bleached wood décor and timber floors provide a perfect backdrop for the stunning works of art that light up the room. There’s plenty of French charm to enjoy from the restaurant on the promenade.
With dishes sourced primarily from local suppliers and a seasonal menu, Counting House always offers gastronomic surprises. “Part of the refurbishment has been to change the menu to a more casual fare,” explains Max. “We had previously been more à la carte, with classic French dishes and a more upmarket vibe. In moving with the times, we decided to stay true to our quality produce and dishes, but create a more casual menu that offers full meals as well as grazing plates and nibbles.”
With an extensive background in hospitality, Max has developed his skills working in restaurants overseas and more recently through owning bars in the inner city. After moving to the Mornington Peninsula with his family and teaming up with head chef Gavin Ong to purchase the century-old building, he was finally able to fulfil his dream of owning a restaurant by the ocean.
Counting House is fully licensed and offers a comprehensive wine list that showcases local wineries and breweries in Red Hill and Mornington.
“The historic building was previously the state savings bank, which is why it has the name Counting House,” says Max. “It has heaps of original features and even the repainting was done in heritage colors. We have the building’s original

Location, history and great food!
The Royal Hotel
MORNINGTON’S Royal Hotel is not just a local architectural icon. It’s the premier place for fine food and wine or a night or two in their quaint upstairs rooms, replete with private balconies and bay views sure to satisfy any holidaymaker with an eye for history. Philippa and her family took over the business late in 2012, having been “born and bred” in the world of hospitality.
provides a refreshing change of scenery from the more traditional pokies pub, with open fireplaces, a cosy tavern and outdoor area beset by sea breeze.
Hotel is high. “We’ve got two in the restaurant area and one rather large one in the tavern. Over winter they become very popular attractions!”
“Our major drawcard is the sensational location, with beautiful beer gardens that overlook Port Philip Bay.” Add to that the fact that “the Royal is open 365 days of the year, including for Christmas lunch” and you’ve got a winning formula.
It pairs perfectly with their waterfront accommodation. “Our boutique hotel rooms are all beautifully renovated and restored to reflect the age and beauty of the Victorian-style building.”
“My parents started Walter’s Wine Bar, which was at Southgate for 21 years, and prior to that had Walter and Maria’s Restaurant for 18 years… it’s in the blood,” she explains. With a focus on the food and beverages, the Royal
Tuesday nights are ‘Royal Tuesdays’, geared towards the younger crowd, while on Saturdays they’ve got live music in the tavern. There’s “usually an acoustic solo or duo performing,” and the tunes make for a wonderful ambience. But if you’re talking about year-round dining, “we come to the market on a different level. We call ourselves a gastropub… basically a top-notch offering using great quality produce.”
It’s not something you’ll find anywhere else on the Mornington Peninsula, and the Royal’s proximity to Main Street, the beaches and the newly-restored pier precinct make it an ideal choice for both locals and tourists, for lunch, dinner, a place to stay or even just a cold drink on a hot day.

It’s a visual delight as well as an aromatic experience, with your choice of black to white teas and everything in between. People come from all over the Peninsula and greater Melbourne to feast on signature dishes like prawn-stuffed eggplant with light oyster sauce, Canadian scallops with ginger and spring onion or one of their modern classics: pan-fried Shanghai pork dumplings with red vinegar. Their duck dishes are also a big hit, and Soy is one of the few eateries in town that have a dedicated glutenfree menu! On top of all this, yum cha à la carte is a Sunday afternoon specialty, perfect for group lunches. They do a great Asian tea too. Apart from serving the

Think Italian in Mornington Italian cuisine at its finest MANHATTAN in Mornington is a traditional family-owned enterprise ran by the Chiodo and Mimmo families who have the intergenerational expertise and attention to detail necessary to create an exquisite Italian dining experience. A hit on social media, Manhattan in Mornington is talked about worldwide. “The staff we’ve brought together have worked for many years in the food industry, so we’ve drawn on that experience and combined it all to come up with the Manhattan concept,” says John, the proprietor. “It really is one big family!” Tuesdays break from the Italian background tunes for a Jazz and Blues evening, and other events are on the cards after hosting successful Gatsby evening and a Burlesque event during Mornington’s Winter Jazz Festival a while back. They even cater for weddings, with ambitions including everything from “parties…to more formal dining experiences”. “Underpinning it all is our ambition to be at the forefront of everyone’s mind when they think Italian food in Mornington. Bringing these ingredients together – the location, the ambience, the people behind the scenes, our management and staff greeting you – we create that quality Italian food experience.” Just three years young, Manhattan in Mornington has a bright future at the heart of local dining culture.
Mornington
Their story is only just beginning, too. “We’ve had some wonderful awards on Trip Advisor, having been “top ten” since our inception. We’ve even been number one on occasion, so we want to maintain that status and really prove that we’re one of the premier restaurants on the Mornington Peninsula.” If you’re after specifics, their Gnocci is all the rage, complemented with a wide range of cheesecakes for dessert. “We’re not quite ‘fine dining,’ but we do dress up the place and enhance its visual appeal.” Their skilled table staff will also ensure that whatever wine you’re drinking complements your dish of choice. It’s all about “capitalising on our Italian heritage, bringing together our traditional experience and modern methods to share beautiful Italian cuisine”. Whatever your taste, John and the team will serve you a Mediterranean meal you won’t forget. 55 Barkly St 5976 4867 www.manhattaninmornington.com.au info@manhattaninmornington.com.au

f ood Sizzling steaks, ribs & more! SQUIRE’S Loft is one of the newer kids on the block, but with no other steakhouse restaurants in Mornington since Black Angus closed down, they’ve filled a significant hole in the local food scene.
Squire’s Loft
Owner Rick was so inspired by the Loft’s existing Melbourne restaurants that he just had to bring it to the Mornington Peninsula.
For Rick, it was essentially a whole new career, having worked as an IT engineer for Hewlett Packard over the last 10 years. The transition has been so successful he’s hardly felt the need to promote. “I was quite surprised by the number of people who knew the brand, either from working near one in the city or having eaten there – Squire’s has been around for 22 years now.”
“I’ve been going to Squire’s for years now – I’m pretty much a regular customer. I believed in the product anyway, so it was easy for me to see it would work down here.” A mate who owned the Essendon restaurant told him of the company’s desire for a Peninsula branch a couple of years ago and they’ve never looked back.
With the first restaurant in Johannesburg, two South African brothers introduced their chain to Australia decades ago with resounding success. There’s now 16 outlets around Australia, and the group have just opened the doors to their Koh Samui branch in Thailand! Other Asian outlets are also on the cards. The longevity and
The Rocks IF seafood is your thing, there’s only one place to eat out in Mornington. The Rocks started life in 2001 as a Mediterranean restaurant, owing in part to owner Robert’s history in Italian food outlets. Over time, it’s evolved into one of the best-known seafood eateries on the Peninsula, and now, Victoria. Situated within the Mornington Yacht Club in the pier precinct, it’s an encounter you won’t soon forget. The food critics certainly think so, as Robert explains they’ve “been reviewed in The Age’s “Good Food
mainstreetmornington.com.au
Guide” every year since 2001, recently winning Restaurant Catering Australia’s award for Best Seafood Restaurant in Victoria and Tasmania. It’s not just the experts who doubt you’ll find better. “It’s where the locals go,” says Robert. Why? “We use locally sourced seafood where possible, including calamari and mussels from ‘Peter the Mussel Man’ at Flinders Mussels, we’re serviced daily by Clams Seafood at the Footscray market and our meats come from Victor Churchill.” Robert and the team serve this quality produce unadulterated, with an Asian twist.
/MainStreetMornington
Even though steak and ribs top the menu, Rick states that they “do a bit of everything, from salmon, to chicken, lamb chops, veggie meals on the grill… we cater for basically everyone.” All of their dishes except dessert and breads are gluten free too, so everyone can enjoy the taste Squire’s Loft is famous for! They’re bound to have something to tickle your tastebuds.

cocktails and canapés on their boat Plover. “We’ll cruise for an hour, then return to The Rocks for another 4 courses. Weather-dependent, it’s a great way to see the local harbour.” For those that prefer wild festivities to a fine dining experience, Robert’s also a stallholder at Mornington’s Main Street Festival every year, so if you want to experience quality seafood in the outdoors, get down there and check it out. He’s got a keen eye for trends in food culture, so there’s always something in the works – The Rocks is definitely the place to experience a modern interpretation of the finest seafood the Peninsula has to offer.

Indulge Mornington Not your average salon HAVING just undergone major renovations, Indulge Mornington opened its doors on the 14th of September 2015. Formerly Ella Bache, proprietor Shanara is delighted that many clients have loyally carried over after the change in ownership. It’s not your average salon though, and Shanara’s not your average therapist. “I’ve worked in the industry since 2008. It all started when I was at uni doing a business and marketing degree!” Her ambitions to work in cosmetics research and development left her with a keen scientific knowledge of the products she employs in therapy, but something was missing from her theory-based knowledge pool. “I really needed to know about skin care, why you’d buy certain products, what makes them successful in the market, so I did a beauty diploma and fell in love with beauty over business and marketing.” It’s easy to see why. “I wanted that closeness with clients, to give them good advice, watch the changes in their skin and offer a service where you interact with real people as opposed to sitting in an office all day.”

Most skincare products are for ‘dry,’ ‘oily’ or ‘dehydrated’ skin, but with Bioelements we can address a range of specific conditions at once.” Shanara understands the challenges of working in a small business, and part of her ethos involves supporting other local and Australian operators. Aussie brands they use include Hair&Me, J-Bronze, Mac + Pat candles from Somerville, Final Touch brows and Somersault body products. “I think we bring something fresh to Mornington. There’s a lot of beauty salons on Main Street, and most beauty therapists will work their way up through the ranks to own their own salon without having the business side of it under control, even though they might be really creative.” Shanara at Indulge has the lot. 3/234 Main St 5975 8232 www.facebook.com/indulge.mornington

Float into fitness
The Private Sea
“AS simple as lying in a pool of warm water sounds, there’s a whole lot of science and research behind it,” explains Tim, proprietor with partner Lynne at The Private Sea in Mornington.
you need to do often to experience the benefits. “It really is an individual thing. We’d float once a week even if we were paying for it,” but fortnightly or even once every two or three months is great too.
“The whole premise of floating is to put you into a deep state of relaxation, where we deprive your senses.”
The benefits cover a wide spectrum, from chronic pain to daily stress, so there’s no wrong time to go for a float.
Once regular customers to a similar venue up in Melbourne, the couple got hooked on the experience. “We had a float ourselves about a year and a half back, but driving all that way was killing us, so we said ‘let’s give it a go!’”
“There’s 700 litres of water in the tank at 34.5 degrees... Then we tip 350kg of Epsom salts into the tank – it’s a stack!” It’s what keeps you afloat in 30cm of water you can’t feel. “It’s two-thirds magnesium and one-third sulphate… like a super Radox bar!”
The business has gone so well they rely entirely on word of mouth for new customers, and the demographic in Mornington is perfect. “We’re focused on health and wellbeing, and with the aging population this is the best spot we could’ve picked.” They regularly jump in for a float themselves, but it’s not something
“Sulphate’s great for keeping your brain receptors firing and helps to strengthen the ligaments in your joints, and the best way of getting magnesium into your system.” It’s far more effective than taking supplements orally, where “adrenaline and cortisol, your stress hormones, wipe it out before it gets where it needs to go.”
Peninsula Skin Cancer Clinic MELANOMAS are the most common form of cancer found in 15 to 40 year olds. The Peninsula Skin Cancer Centre plays a big part in the fight against skin cancer – veteran staff member Sue talks about a few of the things they do to reduce the burden of cancer on Australia. “It used to be a women’s health centre… when women started getting the doctors to look at their skin lesions, owner Dr. Sally Shaw bought a mole mapping machine, but then they started bringing in husbands and sons… we got so busy, the Skin Cancer Centre took over the women’s clinic!” Described as a surveillance program, mole mapping examines your skin over time. “We take magnified photos of people’s moles. Usually we look at the irregular ones and monitor
them for change – that’s a warning sign for melanoma.” They also search extensively for new moles. “We usually have all our moles by the time we’re 40… if something’s new, there’s a high risk it’s a melanoma.” Even though most melanomas are found on people in their 60s, 70s and 80s, “we do find melanomas on teenagers too.” They’re a little harder to spot, given that new moles appear from early childhood up to middle age. To raise awareness, Sue and the team go around to high schools, sporting organisations and Rotary clubs to spread the message. The Centre recently received an award from Melanoma Patients Australia for their work in the field. “We had a tent at Mornington’s Main Street Festival where we gave out free

Summer Skin Tips with contributions by Peninsula Skin Cancer Centre
1. The first and most important thing to do is
just put on some clothes. A long-sleeved shirt if possible – it doesn’t cost any money and is the easiest way to protect the bulk of your skin.
2. Find a hat that you actually like! Many
people buy hats and then never wear them, so if you find one you like, you’re more likely to pick it up and put it on every day.
3. Rash vests, and not just for the kids. They’re suitable for almost any activity and apart from UV protection, can protect you from minor jellyfish stings too. 4. Sunscreen, of course. Protection factors range from 15 to 50+, with higher numbers signifying better defence against UV rays. Remember that no sunscreen offers 100% protection! 5. Sunglasses. You can get melanomas in your eyes as well, so a good pair of sunnies are essential.

What’s Hot: 2016
She & Little on what’s hot for kids Kids fashion in 2016 is all about graphic prints, nature inspired hues and animal illustrations.
Street style and High steet fashion
For girls we are seeing loose shapes and minimalist styling with shades of pastel pink, soft green and beige. For boys mustard and navy are always classy, take a graphic tee and pair it with a soft denim shirt for a casual vibe. Monochrome is back in a big way in clothing and bedroom styling.
While lace has it’s place, nothing speaks local style like some of the up and coming streetwear brands popping up across the peninsula.
Mix and match graphic prints with charcoals and greys, or team with pastel tones for a fun and modern room for your child.
Always cool, jeans, slides and tee’s make for a casual peninsula outing and you can’t go past Milk Bar clothing who proudly support local labels like Nunday and Eyota for everything from street tee prints to hand dyed statement pieces.
Fiona’s of Mornington talks glamour
THE word on fashion trends for 2016 from our Main Street Mornington retailers
Nostalgic fashion is still going strong and while 70’s styling is still popular, the 90’s are starting to make a comeback. Styling shows off shoulders while embellishments for 2016 range from ruffles, to micro pleats, voluminous sleeves and bows. Colour wise, white is hot and Edwardian style prints such as palm fronds and hints of nature are the next big thing.
Mickey Blue on menswear The big changes continuing in menswear for next year are blues in every hue for suiting and shoes in browns and tans.
Women’s trends for the coming season focus on casual-earthy colours, think ‘espresso’ and ‘latte,’ with a pop of colour. Clean lines with understated styling featuring high quality fabrics & different shirt styles. The look is strongly represented in the Mela Purdie range’Clothes That Travel With You’ made in Australia with new styles introduced monthly suiting all body shapes. Formal dressing is still very much about beautiful lace & embroidered fabrics. These are featured in European brands with navy now very strong. Hems are still longer with a hint of the 60s.Tweed is incorporated in casual & long coats in beautiful cashmere & wool. The long coat is very much on trend. These looks can be found in ‘Moss & Spy’ ‘Very Very’ & ‘Sacha Drake’ once again supporting ‘Made in ‘Australia’.
Lighter blues and royal blues are likely to take centre stage in suits for weddings and races, teamed with colourful pocket handkerchiefs and tan shoes. Many men will be replacing suit jackets with sports jackets and dressing them up with ties and hanks or dressing down with chinos and jeans. Sports jackets, suits and trousers will continue to be slim cut. Large checks have gone from shirts and are being replaced mostly with neat patterns or plain colours.

Main Street Eyecare Melbourne funky at Mornington prices! “MELBOURNE funky at Mornington prices” is Kaye’s motto at Main Street Eye Care. She carries on a long tradition of optometry and eye care from their Main Street location, which has been an optometrist since opening in the 1930s. Kaye and her three optometrists can custom fit anything from contact lenses to custom-built spectacles, with fashion a driving principle in their designs. “After all, we don’t always wear the same clothes and the same shoes, so why would we wear the same glasses?” It’s a good question. Kaye’s no fly-in-fly-out worker either. She and her family have been running the business since 2000, and are “passionate about getting the right frame that suits and fits, coupled with the right lenses”. They support other Australian businesses too – “about 90% of what we sell is Australian designed,

and a lot of it’s made here too.” Everything they do supports local jobs and whether it’s discreet contact lenses or occasional-use reading specs, Main Street Eye Care use local labs for all their lenses. Their work has caught the eye of experts in the field, and they often host consultation and fitting sessions with designers such as Roger Henley and Paul Taylor. So if you want the best of the best in design, build and fit, have a look at Main Street Eye Care. Gravity Streetwear Streetwear’s resident professionals! WHEN you want to look your best, chances are you’ll need a little advice. Brothers Anthony and Arthur are Gravity Streetwear’s resident professionals, and they’re here to help. Their Mornington store opened on Boxing Day 2014 and is almost one year old. Arthur’s the driving force behind the business, and after establishing a base at Nunawading, sent Anthony back home to the Mornington Peninsula. “Anthony started off as a silent partner, but eventually wanted a career change – he’d been a plumber for 20 years too long! He’s a Mount Eliza local and spotted the potential down in Mornington.” Recognising that a lot of Peninsula boutiques cater for youth or high fashion, the lack of decent offerings for the 30-55 age bracket was a gaping hole in the market they sought to take advantage of. “You’ve got your Gazman, town and country stores, but then it falls away to your “cool for school” surf shops. I’m a shopper too, and most of us guys in that demographic work full time, have our rent and loans to pay off, so we want to get in and out of the shops, enjoy our hobbies and get back to work.” Whether you need a new shirt for work events or a head-to-toe casual fit out, Gravity has you covered. They’ll make sure your reasonably priced outfit survives the fashion trends for more than just one season, providing “department-style variety with the service and quality of a boutique.” They won’t jack up prices in the tourism season either – repeat custom is all-important. “We don’t want to look any older than we are… we’ve got to keep our partners on their toes!” 187 Main St 5976 4597 www.facebook.com/gravitystreetwear

Mark Gray Gallery New expanded gallery now open DO a search for landscape photography on Google and the number one result will be Mornington’s very own Mark Gray. He’s a professional landscape photographer with 118 various awards from all over the planet – little wonder then that his business is growing. He’s just opened a new and expanded gallery at 65 Main Street, the old Trigger Bros. store. “I’ve only ever shot landscapes. When they start their landscape photography journey, a lot of people go down the path of doing weddings and portraiture to make ends meet. I was able to run a web design business on the side while I was building my photography business, so I ran the two consecutively until I had enough income to make the change.” You’ll now find his collections in homes and galleries in 29 different countries, sold both online and from his new retail outlet. He hasn’t looked back. Earlier this year, the second print of his ‘Dawn Sentinel’ photograph sold to a Perth-based collector for $30,000, with the third and final print now selling for $60,000. It’s a rare piece, taken at dawn in Cape Schanck overlooking the Bass Strait, and is a stellar example of why he’s in such high demand. He and wife Suzy have just had their first baby, Zachariah, or ‘Zach’ for short, so his time is in high demand but short supply. It’s reminiscent of the days when

he had his first gallery up in Merimbula, New South Wales. “We set up our first ever retail store, and were there for a couple of years… but the second year we’d decided to move back to Mornington to be closer to friends and family in Melbourne. We opened up on Main Street next to Penmans Café, now a Japanese restaurant. That was an interesting time, with 2 stores running in different states!” Interesting times indeed. Even with outlets in different states, Mark still found time to pursue his passion, eventually closing the Merimbula operation in favour of Mornington. “We did have a manager running that store, but still had to head up there one weekend a month.” He and Suzy took it in turns, but even with division of labour it proved taxing. “After the success of the Mornington gallery, we thought
/MainStreetMornington
we’d just focus on the one store, so when the lease ran out we closed it up. The Mornington one’s done so well we decided to expand, taking over the old Trigger Bros. space, and it’s been great.” Where many people pursue their passion, interest or hobby for a lifetime or more with little success, Mark actually started out in web design before transitioning to photography. “I’ve certainly always had a passion for art… I worked in graphic design before I started taking photos, working my way up from junior web designer to web manager in the field of internet marketing. It’s been a wild ride, but it’s certainly paid off.” 65 Main St 5975 5558 www.markgray.com.au

Photography, art...and yoga! A little over a year ago, siblings Kristy, Josh and Joel decided to take over their father’s factory, turning it into an illustrious combination of studio spaces and galleries, suitable for all manner of displays and events. “Before he put it up for lease, dad offered it to us… it took nearly a year to go through council and renovate it, but it was quite a family event. Every weekend we’d go down and paint together,” Kristy explains. Situated next door to the hot Commonfolk Coffee Company, the two premises pool floor space to stage events like the Maker’s Market, held on 6th December. “We all run it together… myself and Josh are graphic designers, and Joel’s a builder, so we each take on different aspects,” says Kristy. “Josh had already started The Snake Hole out the back while it was still a factory… there’s not many studio spaces in the Mornington area, and we hire out the gallery for all sorts of

LAST year the Mornington Railway Preservation Society celebrated its 30th anniversary and the 125th anniversary of the first train arriving to Mornington. To celebrate, the society known as Mornington Railway for short, ran several trips hauled by the pride of the fleet K163, an 18metre long, 63tonne fully-restored steam locomotive built in Newport in 1941 and one of few K class locos still operating in Victoria today.
holidays and day trips. The centrepiece of the Historic Mornington Railway is the train hauled by locomotive K163, which was withdrawn from service in 1966 at Ararat, rescued by Frankston Apex Club and transported to Jubilee Park in Frankston in November 1973 where it spent 11 years as a static tourist attraction before being sold to the railway society in 1984, the year of its formation.
The steam train from Baxter to Mornington made its first journey on 10 September 1889, much to the delight of locals. Morningtonians were over the moon to have an alternative to ships which so often were subject to the vagaries of Port Phillip or the rutted dirt road from Frankston impassable in bad weather.
The 80 or so Mornington Railway volunteers keep the tradition of steam trains alive and run trips on three Sundays every month from Moorooduc to Mornington.
The train brought a new level of prosperity to traders as a reliable transport link gave more opportunity to tourists flocking to the town for

What better way to spend a Sunday than rolling down to Mornington aboard an historic train carriage hauled by K163, its whistle sounding as it passes through crossings and smoke pouring from the loco to remind us of days when steam was king of railroads around the world? Tickets to ride Mornington Railway operates three Sundays a month and on special occasions. Return tickets: $16 adults, $8 children, $13 concession, $43 family (two adults and two children). Story: Lorraine Aitken
WITH farmers markets becoming an integral part of the lifestyles of many families on the Mornington Peninsula I thought I would venture out to our local farmers market in Mornington to take a look at what’s on offer and to see why farmers markets have become so popular in the last few years. As with all farmers markets, the focus is on fresh produce that is grown locally and sold by the farmer, so we as consumers are getting the freshest seasonal produce. Prices are generally higher than what you will find in the supermarkets because produce is often organically grown on a much smaller scale, so inevitably costs are higher. What you get for paying a little extra though is quality, freshness, flavour and advice from passionate stall holders that more often than not have great food knowledge and are happy to share recipes and ideas. People with allergies and intolerances are finding farmers markets a great way to shop, as they can talk to the maker/grower directly as to what ingredients are used in products and how things are grown. It’s also a better way to shop. You can enjoy the sunshine, meet up with friends and feel more connected within the community as you develop relationships with sellers and regular market goers. The environment can also benefit with food less travelled and low or no packaging especially if you take along your own reusable bags and where possible walking instead of driving to your local farmers market. At Mornington Farmers Market there is plenty on offer with fruit and veg being the main sellers followed
Mornington
by grass fed meats, mussels, cheeses, nuts, herbs, freshly baked bread, hot food, flowers, sweet treats, Dutch doughnuts, honey, soap, preserves, jams, relish, olive oil, wine, pasta sauce, fresh coffee and much more. The market has a good community feel with the children catered for with face painting, a jumping castle and a nearby playground whilst the adults can enjoy some hot food and a coffee while listening to some local performers. I was pleased to see that the Mornington Farmers Market is accredited with the VFMA which means all stall holders must abide by strict criteria to be accepted into the market so you can be guaranteed that you are buying from authentic producers and supporting locals. You’ll find the Mornington Farmers Market in the park at the end of Main Street on the second Saturday of each month between 8:30am -1pm all year round. Entry is $2 per adult which goes to the local charity group that mans the entrances and does the set up for the day. When we visited the proceeds went to the friendly volunteers from Mornington’s Men’s Shed who were giving the children stamps on their hands. Afterwards you could enjoy a stroll down to the recently reopened pier, enjoy a coffee at The Rocks, take the kids for a play in the park or have lunch at one of the many great cafes in Mornington. With so much choice in Mornington it is easy to turn it into a day out.

Let’s go for a walk... Selected historical points of interest from the Mornington Heritage Walk booklet produced by the Mornington & District Historical Society. This area was originally frequented by the Boon Wurrung people with European settlers arriving in the 1840s to take up pastoral leases, and establish timber and fishing industries. In 1854 a township was surveyed and called Snapper Point (later spelled Schnapper) with the name changing to Mornington in 1861. The town quickly became the major commercial and legal centre for the Mornington Peninsula.

The Mornington & District Historical Society has prepared a booklet (RRP $10) for people to take a guided walk of the historical sites of Mornington. Collated by Vicky Sapkin, the booklet was awarded a commendation in the Victorian Community History Awards 2013. It is a self-guided walk from the Old Post Office Museum along the Esplanade, taking in Mornington Park and the foreshore. The society also offers guided walks, which gives even more insight into the town’s early days. With such a rich history, visitors are encouraged to spend an hour or so exploring the then and now of the township. Here are a few highlights of the walk. Mornington & District Historical Society, Old Post Office Museum, corner Main Street and Esplanade, Mornington Open: Sundays and public holidays 1.30–4.30pm and Wednesdays (during school holidays) 11am–3pm Telephone: 5976 3203. THE OLD POST OFFICE corner Main Street and Esplanade Built in 1863, the post office also contained the telegraph office and from 1905 housed Mornington’s first telephone exchange. A gabled entry porch and veranda were later removed and the polychrome brickwork is now covered in a cement slurry coating, but still inside are the original wooden counter and tiled fireplace. The post office remained here until 1964. In 1968 the building was reopened as a museum and home of Mornington & District Historical Society.

MORNINGTON PARK formerly Victoria Park In 1863, 10 acres (four hectares) were reserved as the site for a public park for “promenade and recreation”. Near the entrance are an interpretive panel and a flagpole surrounded by bollards with small plaques at the base, both of which note aspects of the park’s history. There was once a large rotunda, a small grandstand, dressing rooms for sporting events and, until the late 1920s, cyclists trained on a circular track. Next to the popular children’s playground, spreading cypresses and Moreton Bay fig trees have been climbed by generations of children. Picnic parties came from Melbourne by paddlesteamers, trains, horse-drawn drags, charabancs and cars. Annual trade picnics were held by groups such as butchers, bakers, Gas and Fuel Corporation employees and many others. Mornington Fire Brigade practised hose and reel on an asphalted area of the park where there is an interpretive panel noting the history. The park’s entrance arches of local brown stone and the recently renovated band pavilion on the western boundary were built in 1932 to give the unemployed work during the Great Depression. In 1965 senior citizens’ clubrooms were built near the pavilion. An Avenue of Honour has recently been planted beside paths to honour servicemen and women who served in both world wars and all wars since.

ROYAL HOTEL 770 Esplanade A town landmark, Rennison’s Schnapper Point Hotel was built in the late 1850s and renamed the Royal Hotel in 1876. By 1863 the hotel offered 22 rooms increasing to 65 rooms by the 1870s with a garden and stables on 3½ acres. The stables, demolished in about 1970, and yard were once the depot for Cobb and Co. coaches. In 1891 a billiard room and public hall were added. Extensive restoration to the façade and verandas was completed in 1984. An underground tunnel, since filled in, between Royal Beach and the hotel was used to transfer goods from ships. The beach was also the site of a windmill used to pump seawater for the hotel’s hot and cold baths.

FORMER COURTHOUSE AND LOCK-UP corner Main Street and Esplanade Built in 1860, this was the first permanent courthouse on the Mornington Peninsula. It and the lock-up behind the courthouse are the oldest public buildings in Mornington. They were used continuously from 1860 until 1988 after which the buildings fell into disrepair. In 2000 a campaign by the Friends of the Courthouse saved them from demolition, and Northern Mornington Peninsula Tourism is now the tenant.

MORNINGTON PIER Construction of Mornington Pier started in 1857 and is significant as one of a small group of piers built in the 1850s by the new Colonial Government to open up the movement of produce to and from the more remote settlements. It remained the major point of entry into the district for many years and aided in the development of fishing and other local industries. The pier has been much altered and improved over the years, including in 2014. An extension to the pier known as the North Arm was added in about 1900 to improve access for paddlesteamers that brought large numbers of day-trippers and tourists.

Beleura House & Garden NESTLED away in the forested hills north of Mornington is a historic homestead, with a garden of botanic aura. A bevy of colourful colonial characters passed through this property over the course of the 19th century, some as owners, others as investors or state-sanctioned custodians. But it was Mr & Mrs George Tallis who became the property’s most significant advocate and historical figure. Later knighted along with his partner, Sir and Lady Tallis already owned the decadently large neighbouring property ‘Sunnyside,’ just up the highway in Mount Eliza, adding ‘Beleura’ to their growing portfolio. He went on to own more than 800 hectares of arable land in and around Mornington, but as the years went by and city-dwellers came to settle, most of this was developed into the area we now know as Beleura Hill. All that remains of the acres of farmland George Tallis annexed during his time in Mornington is park next to the high school bearing the Tallis name. That, and a couple of street signs. From his humble beginnings as a reporter for an Irish newspaper, through his love for theatre and composition of music to the breeding of Scottish cattle, Tallis always had an eye on the future. He had a unique understanding of the momentous assets at his disposal. Rather than accumulate the spoils of his life as family money chose to bequeath a great deal to the state of Victoria, leaving the immaculate ‘Beleura’ property for the eternal enjoyment of locals and tourists alike.
The property’s location, deep in an exclusive residential area between the golf course and the coast, requires some finesse to operate as a tourist attraction. The local streets aren’t built for the sort of traffic a public garden of this calibre would attract, so prospective guests must meet a bus nearby and shuttle in. Tours and events are run multiple times every week, many of them themed for the season. It’s always worth seeing the curator’s latest efforts – the garden looks as good in the winter as it does in the summer. There’s no bad time to experience ‘Beleura’s’ unique slice of local history. Greedi LuLu
Handmade & bespoke homewares “TO create an environment they love for the people they love”… this was the central tenet Megan Luiz used to start her very own homewares store in Mornington, one “filled with beautiful and eclectic pieces” from all over the world but inspired by her childhood, spent in South Africa. Even the name, ‘Greedilulu’, originates from her family’s beach cottage outside of Durban. Megan carried this title across the sea to her business, as a way of representing the importance of her earliest memories. She’s travelled the world from continent to continent, and the worldly influence of her journey is evident in the accoutrements, trinkets and textiles on display at Greedilulu.
“The African spirit is a big part of who I am today… it’s something I want to share with everyone through the homewares I’ve sourced for the store,” Megan elaborates. Handmade and bespoke items comprise a big part of her product range, so you know you’re looking at so much more than the latest piece of plastic. “I choose to stock handmade products that aren’t mass produced… I support fair trade and try to focus on building relationships with other small Australian businesses.” Judging from Greedilulu’s success in a crowded market, it’s a philosophy that works for Megan and her business.
That ethos doesn’t restrict their range, either. Among the colourful store’s offerings are cushions from Hook&Eye Interiors, Sage & Clare textiles, Annie Everngham prints and stationery, Candlelit & Co. candles, Cat Lee art, Pampas handmade fairtrade rugs, Millie Fairhall Cheeseboards, Milly Dent ceramics, purses and bags by St. Luiz, Daniel Shinners art and Walter G. tableware. Catering for the whole gamut of tastes and family budgets, something is bound to catch your eye in-store. Greedilulu are open seven days, too, so get down and have a chat to Megan and the team to see what works for your home. 12 Blake St 5973 5257 www.greedilulu.com

Jardinerie Unique gifts, fashion & decor
THE laneways of Mornington are in the midst of a complete overhaul – new pavement, wall art and lighting schemes are transforming these areas into active spaces, and small retailers like Jardinerie are an integral part of their future as they work with the Chamber of Commerce to revamp the alleys and plant jasmine over unappealing wire fences. The outlet is “nestled down the laneway” of 138 Main Street, boasting a “treasure trove of unique and interesting giftware,” says owner Michelle. “I grew up here on the Peninsula and am a massive advocate for promoting our beautiful piece of paradise… we just have it all at our doorstep and I really do wake up thankful every day.” It’s a mindset shared by locals and visitors to the area alike. Michelle’s story started with the “over-loving” of her cacti and air plants, leading her to seek out high quality faux-plants in order to create the lush feeling of tranquillity you experience from the moment you step off the laneway and into Jardinerie. “When you adore being surrounded by greenery but seem to kill every plant in sight, the mission was on!”. Michelle’s daughter Jasmine now helps out around the shop, looking after customers and entertaining the kids with pavement chalk drawings as they showcase a range of decorative and aesthetic homewares. Apart from handmade crochet plant holders, woven wall art, designer beanbags, a host of cane and wicker products and even a range of greeting cards, Jardinerie has a specialty range of soy and copper jar candles. vanilla, caramel and other uplifting scents fill the shop, and they even offer free local delivery and professional advice for those looking to fill their spaces with something inspiring. Their latest offering includes exclusive fashion labels, many of which are new to the market and not found in other outlets. Keep an eye out for crochet and tassel jackets, kimonos, soft summer knitted dusters and award-winning, locally handmade leather handbags. Jardinerie incorporates the work of local artisans wherever possible and is a real asset to the Mornington community. If you’re after quality décor, talk to Michelle for the best advice on decorating your home and garden.

Homewares with a twist! IT started life as a hobby of upcycling, reinventing unusual items into quirky, bespoke pieces of art and decor. But Ken and Joy take their hobby seriously, and Quirky Collective on Barkly Street quickly blossomed into one of Mornington’s premier homewares outlet for accessories and furniture for your home and garden – with a twist! “Our emphasis is on useful and useable items with character. We specialise in finding interesting and eclectic pieces,” notes Ken. They even have a designated children’s area, so you can take your time perusing their unorthodox offerings knowing the kids will be entertained.
They only ever close on Good Friday and Christmas Day and pridethemselves on their ability to offer real advice and helpful service all year round.
Everything about Quirky Collective is designed to facilitate creativity and inspire possibility. Their stock displays are set up to consider the visual appeal and utility of their products, and as Ken suggests, “the underlying appreciation of individuality and expression is evident everywhere you look!” Aside from a great range of items, attentive and knowledgeable assistance is equally as important when it comes to decorating your home.
