MORNINGTON FACTS Mornington is a seaside town on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, Australia, located 57 km south-east of Melbourne’s central business district.
An earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale struck the town on 2 September 1932 associated with the nearby Selwyn Fault. No injuries or major damage was reported.
The Mornington Pier was built in 1857, and continues to be extended and improved.
Mornington’s original post office, built in 1863 at the corner of Main Street and The Esplanade, now operates as a museum displaying old telecommunications equipment and items relating to local history. It is the site of the Mornington and District Historical Society. On the other side of Main Street is the old court house (built in 1860) and the former police station lock-up (1862).

Mornington has a long history dating back to 1802 when explorer Matthew Flinders landed at Schnapper Point. These days, Schnapper Point provides a boat-launching ramp, jetty, yacht club, restaurant and scenic walks providing scenic views along the coast.

Fossil beach is a significant fossil site with evidence of Australia’s sea life from 10 to 15 million years ago. The fossils were discovered in 1854 in the limestone cliffs. Most of the fossils have now been removed. Access is via the track from the cliff path near Bentons Road (near the picnic area).
The first cruise ship visited Mornington township on February 24, 2015, after P&O added the Mornington Peninsula to its itinerary. The Pacific Pearl with 1800 residents on board docked early on the Tuesday morning, part of a new itinerary for P&O Cruises.
Mornington Central Shopping Centre is built on the site of the former Mornington railway station.
Mornington has a number of beaches, some of which are located at the base of rocky cliffs which dominate part of the coastline in this area. Along the eastern side of Schnapper Point is the sheltered Mothers Beach and Scout Beach, while Shire Hall Beach and Mills Beach are located further east along the coast. Around a kilometre south of Schnapper Point is Fishermans Beach which ends at the scenic rocky outcrop of Linley Point where there are boat ramps and scenic viewing spots along the coast.

Mornington Rose Garden Making a Dream a Reality THE Mornington Rose Gardens has over 4000 roses planted in 86 beds and is surrounded by a border of native Australian trees and shrubs. The concept for the Mornington Rose Gardens was the brainchild of a local businessman Don Gordon who was inspired by the rose garden in Benalla that was situated next to the art gallery. The land was allocated for this purpose by Mornington Peninsula Shire Council after much lobbying by Don. The first sod was turned by

Councillor Anne Shaw on a freezing day in June 2004. The rose garden was built by volunteers during one of the longest droughts in Australia and has been hooked up to recycled water. The Mornington Rose Gardens was officially opened by the well-known gardener and radio and television personality Jane Edmanson in November 2008. Don Gordon passed away in 2011, but not before seeing his rose garden dream become a reality.

All that Jazz and Blues Jazz and blues festival now open to other genres EACH year on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend Main Street Mornington is abuzz with the sights and sounds of the Mornington Winter Jazz & Blues Festival. After five successful years the Festival is opening up to other music genres to become the Mornington Winter Music Festival. Jazz and Blues will still be a highlight of this three-day celebration of music, art and heritage from across the peninsula and beyond. The dynamic music program stretches across jazz, blues, and other genres, and offers a broad spectrum of sounds and styles. The festival line-up includes both old favourites and hot new artists that are making waves in the music industry and there is sure to be something in the program to suit everyone’s tastes. The 2017 festival saw Mornington come alive with a showcase of entertainment including headlining

acts such as James Morrison who featured at The Mornington Regional Gallery, Olivia Chindamo at The Rocks and Kate Ceberano at The Grand. Main Street Market Visit Mornington on a Wednesday for a unique day out HEAD to Mornington any Wednesday and you’ll find the town bustling with the chatter of stallholders and locals enjoying a day out at the weekly Wednesday market. Started in 1979, the Main Street Market has stood the test of time and is now Victoria’s longest running weekly street market. Even after 38 years the market continues to delight locals and visitors alike with the “home baked, handmade and home-grown” goodies on offer from over 60 stalls throughout the Main Street of Mornington. From 9am every Wednesday, rain, hail or shine the market runs. You will find a variety of stalls ranging from fresh produce to handmade jewelery, fashion, craft, baked goods and home décor. From Hyde Park to Billy Goat Flat The tale of Mrs. Hicks THE archives of the Old Post Office Museum in Mornington contain memories recorded by earlier residents of the town, such as the late Doreen Townsend. In particular, she recalled Mrs. Anne Hicks who lived at Billy Goat Flat. Mrs Hicks kept a coffin in her home in case of an emergency; some said she slept in it while others believed that it was used to store her bread. Visitors who wanted to inspect the coffin could do so for a small consideration. When Mrs Hicks departed Billy Goat Flat and where she went to is uncertain. Much more is known of her earlier reputation.
The Apple Seller of Hyde Park In the 1840’s a small shanty stood at the east end of the Serpentine River in Hyde Park, London, and from there a woman named Anne Hicks sold apples and gingerbread. Originally she made use of an old conduit; when this disappeared, she plied her trade from an open stall with an awning. But Mrs. Hicks knew more than her apples; she was a born letter writer. First, she succeeded in her plea to the Department of Woods and Forests that she be

permitted to erect a small lock-up in which she could safely leave her goods. Then she was allowed to erect a small brick enclosure which turned out to be four walls which contained windows and a door. Mrs Hicks was then granted permission to erect a chimney followed by a fence. The irrepressible apple seller was now a householder in Hyde Park! Just as things were going well, Mrs Hicks suffered a setback: all obstructions in Hyde Park were to be removed to make way for the Great Exhibition and the apple seller was served with a notice to quit.
The Great Exhibition Sometimes referred to as the Crystal Palace Exhibition, this was held in Hyde Park from 1 May, 1851. It was the first in a series of World’s Fair Exhibitions of culture and industry that became popular in the nineteenth century The patron of the much-anticipated Great Exhibition was Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria. While it provided a platform for countries across the world to display their achievements, its prime motive was to /MainStreetMornington
make sure that all appreciated Great Britain’s role as industrial leader. Exhibits included the Koh-i-Noor diamond, an early eighth century Tara brooch, a precursor to the fax machine, a single-cast iron frame for a piano( the first in Europe),and visitors could watch the entire process of cotton manufacturing from spinning to finished cloth. George Jennings designed the first public conveniences for the resting rooms at the Exhibition; the charge was a penny.
before moving to Schnapper Point where her son was living. But Mrs. Hicks never gave up her fight for her wrongs to be righted and the imminent arrival of H.R.H. Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, in Australia set her off again. In November, 1867 a letter to the editor of The Age informed the readers of the injustices in her life, and a request for compensation was waiting for Prince Alfred on his arrival. She received the following response:
A yacht race held in conjunction with the Exhibition was to lead to the regular America’s Cup contests. Six million people visited the Great Exhibition with the average daily attendance being 42,831. The event made enough profit to found the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Science Museum, and the Natural History Museum. There was also sufficient to set up an educational fund to provide grants and scholarships for industrial research; it continues to this day.

Mrs. Hicks v. City Hall Not one to surrender without a fight, Mrs. Hicks refused to vacate her shanty. Arrested in the park for selling apples outside the Crystal Palace, she was released on the promise that she would desist. Her next step was to write to The Times appealing for help and claiming her cottage was granted by royal favour to her grandfather after he saved the future King Edward VII from a watery grave when his horse bolted into the river.
I am directed to inform you that the calls upon the bounty of H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh are so great and numerous that H.R.H. is unable to comply with your request.
Mrs. Hicks placed placards on trees in Hyde Park and her many supporters agitated to such an extent that the matter was brought before parliament where it was dismissed. The claim for Royal favour was laughed off and her shack was declared an impermissible encroachment. It was only then that the apple seller left Hyde Park.

Australia Bound While Mrs. Hicks’ letters to The Times did not achieve their immediate objective, they led to the establishment of a public fund which would enable her to travel to Australia to join her son. These monies were supplemented by her doubtful claim that she had written “The Cake Sellers Story” which was published by Charles Dickens. Once in Australia Mrs. Hicks lived for eleven years on the Jim Crow diggings near Bendigo; she claimed she was “stuck up” three times and lost her house twice

Brass Razu Come in for a drink or two “I say sir, we disembarked one morning in a place we would come to know as Mornington. I found this coin on the shores of this new land. I had no belongings, lost at sea, you see. ‘Twas the only thing I had, nothing but this Brass Razoo” – Admiral Arkle 1796. To this day, the famous coin is framed in Brass Razu’s fireplace room. We’re not entirely sure the story is true, but this wine bar was the first of its kind on the Mornington Peninsula. Ten years later and it’s still the place to go for a wine and cheeseboard. What makes Brass a little quirky is the different rooms it offers. The Main Bar twinkles with chandeliers and great paintings from yesteryear. The room entertains fabulous themed events like Paris Night, Brass-O-Ween (their annual All Hallow’s Eve event) and even a Disco Dance Night. The next room has a cozy fireplace with shelves filled with grandma’s knick- knacks, miniature portraits and even a model of the ship Admiral Arkle once set sail in hundreds of years ago, (again this may or may not be true). Mark Gray
A wild ride DO a search for landscape photography on Google and the number one result will be Mornington’s very own Mark Gray. He’s a professional landscape photographer with 118 various awards from all over the planet – little wonder then that his business is growing, with his expanded gallery at 65 Main Street. “I’ve only ever shot landscapes. When they start their landscape photography journey, a lot of people go down the path of doing weddings and portraiture to make ends meet. I was able to run a web design business on the side while I was building my photography business, so I ran the two consecutively until I had enough income to make the change.” You’ll now find his collections in
homes and galleries in 29 different countries, sold both online and from his retail outlet. He hasn’t looked back. Earlier last year, the second print of his ‘Dawn Sentinel’ photograph sold to a Perth-based collector for $30,000, with the third and final print selling for $60,000. It’s a rare piece, taken at dawn in Cape Schanck overlooking the Bass Strait, and is a stellar example of why he’s in such high demand. “The Mornington store has done so well we decided to expand; taking over the old Trigger Bros. space and it’s been great.” Where many people pursue their passion, interest or hobby for a lifetime or more with little success, Mark actually started out in web design before transitioning to photography.

Beleura House A Mornington Treasure BELEURA, built in 1863 by James Butchart on land purchased at Schnapper Point (now Mornington), was described as the finest mansion in the colony. Subsequently owned by a succession of rich, powerful and successful families, it was purchased in 1916 by George Tallis and was the summer retreat for his family for many decades. In 1950 it became the home of Jack Morton Tallis by family agreement, and his life thereafter was dedicated to the preservation of Beleura. John Tallis, as he preferred to be known, died in 1996 and bequeathed Beleura and its considerable contents to the people of Victoria, requesting that it become a house museum. In November, 2004, his dream was realized and Beleura and its gardens are now open to the public in the way he wished. Although a number of accounts record that the land on which Beleura was built was the property of the

Hunter brothers, a map of the time shows that the Yan-ti-Cran grant of 1840 was recorded in the name of “Mr. Hunter.” Another record lists the owner as “A.M.Hunter.” James Butchart, the builder of Beleura, had amassed a fortune, said at the time of his death to be one of the largest in the colony. He did this by supplying the miners on the goldfields of Ballarat, Bendigo and Castlemaine with many of the things they needed. When he retired in 1862, at the age of forty, he leased and subsequently bought land at Schnapper Point. To quote John Hetherington of The Age in 1963:
“Butchart seems to have been one of the first men to settle on the Peninsula with the idea, not so much of farming the land, as of living graciously in the manner of a squire.” Accordingly, James Butchart set about building /MainStreetMornington

Beleura, a twelve-roomed Italianate villa. It had a large garden and carriageway, which remains to this day. Recent research indicates the architect was Joseph Reed of the firm Reed and Barnes, the same architects who designed the Melbourne Town Hall, the Royal Exhibition Building, the State Library and Melbourne Trades Hall. James Butchart had little time to enjoy Beleura, which was completed in 1865. It is said James Butchart died on the front steps of Beleura in 1869. Prior to his death he commissioned artist Eugene von Guerard to capture the view of Beleura. This painting was completed in 1870 and is on display in the National Gallery of Australia. Enterprising and successful Melbourne businessman Charles Edward Bright acquired Beleura after the death of James Butchart. Charles Bright married the daughter of the Governor of Victoria, and Beleura became the official vice-regal summer retreat. When the Brights travelled to England in 1873 with the Governor and his wife, Mornington Grammar School was conducted on the premises. Caleb Joshua Jenner, another successful businessman, leased Beleura in 1883 and used it as a summer retreat

before purchasing the property in 1888. During the time Beleura was owned by Caleb Jenner, much-needed service areas were added to the mansion, effectively doubling it in size.
He had natural ability and huge ambition; controlling one of the biggest theatre companies in the world. He was also part of the fledgling Hoyts theatre chain.
Caleb Jenner died at Beleura in 1890. After her attempts to sell the property were unsuccessful, his widow, Eliza, continued to use Beleura until 1899.
In 1922, George Tallis was knighted for his services to the theatre. The Tallises loved entertaining their theatrical friends at Beleura, especially Dame Nellie Melba who slept in the palatial guest bedroom.
Robert Smith, a pastoralist, purchased the property in 1899. Following Robert Smith’s death in 1904, ownership of Beleura passed to his widow, Jane.
Sir George acquired surrounding land at Beleura over the years, eventually owning some 2000 acres at Mornington.
William Ernest Albert Edgwick, another grazier, acquired Beleura in 1911 and is believed to be responsible for painting the exterior for the first time.
Sir George was playing a round of golf at Gleneagles in Scotland with his youngest son, John Tallis, when he received news of the death of Lady Tallis at Beleura in 1933.
In 1915, William Edgwick sold to a syndicate which subdivided Beleura and its 160 acres, renaming it “Beleura on the Sea.” In 1916, Beleura and various parcels of its subdivided land were acquired by George and Amelia Tallis to be once again used as a summer retreat. George Tallis was a man of wealth who migrated to Melbourne in 1886 from Ireland as a seventeen year old.

Sir George Tallis spent his retirement years between Beleura and Braehour, interspersed with regular overseas trips. Sir George died in August 1948, and is buried with Lady Tallis in the Box Hill cemetery. The estate was divided between the four children, and it appeared that the task of caring for the aging Beleura was not attractive to any of them. At a family

attractions meeting, John agreed to take on responsibility for Beleura rather than see it sold. Between 1925 and 1940, John Tallis was a resident of Europe. The only break in that period was when he returned home for a short time following the death of his mother in 1933. He later suggested that this extended time in Europe was to equip him to follow his father as a theatre impresario. Back in Australia in 1940 he joined the army, serving in the intelligence section. Later he helped out on the family farm at Wagga Wagga and tried to settle down, having “some success with ballet, composition and broadcasting.” His place in Australian music history rests in his numerous scores for ballet. John Tallis built on the Italianate influences of the original design and made a series of changes to the interior and exterior of Beleura. John Tallis decided to go to Italy in 1953, buying two chandeliers for Beleura in Venice, and in Florence a “delightful little statue fountain.” After a short time in Paris, he travelled to London where he attended auctions in the mornings and the theatre at night. John Tallis was back in Australia by the end of 1953. Like his father before him, John Tallis collected art. He also collected books and formed a fine library based around his enthusiasms. The interior that we see today is still the result of the 1950’s renovations. The garden features the original nineteenth century driveway layout, rear courtyards and conifer trees. The recent removal of many layers of white paint has returned the exterior of the house to its original appearance. Over the decades the duty of care became something of an obsession for John Tallis. Before he died in 1996, he made arrangements to give his treasured house and garden to the people of Victoria, seemingly knowing that for him the last lingering rays of the Edwardian sun were setting. Guided tours are scheduled on selected days throughout the year. Visitors are collected from a nearby location and transferred to Beleura in a courtesy bus. Tea, coffee, shortbread, and a light lunch are served to guests. The tour takes approximately four and a half hours. The cost is $39 ($36 concession) and bookings can be arranged by phoning 5975 2027.

Download a QR Reader onto your mobile device. A hard copy is available from the Information Centres, at the Old Court House and The Old Post Office/ Museum. It is a self-guided walk from the Old Post Office Museum along the Esplanade, taking in Mornington Park and the foreshore. The society also offers guided walks, which gives even more insight into the town’s early days. With such a rich history, visitors are encouraged to spend an hour or so exploring the then and now of the township. Dive instructors, hire gear & more FOR more than 15 years, the family-run Harbour Dive has been proud of the unparalleled quality of their divers and staff. “We have been an instructor training facility for more than 11 years and ensure your safety and enjoyment at all times,” says general manager Cathy Warren, who runs the facility with her husband John. He’s the instructor trainer, while their daughter Melanie works as the dive travel coordinator. Together, they run courses regularly and usually dive locally, although they do go out as far as Blairgowrie on occasion and are always ready to jump in the boat to reach an exotic underwater destination. The dedicated and highly-skilled team backing them up includes “a lovely crew of

instructors, dive staff and dive control specialists,” and following renovations last year, Harbour Dive is now “one of the biggest dive shops in Victoria!” With gear available for hire on site, you don’t have to be swimming in cash or a sporting pro to enjoy the deep blue, but for those that do venture underwater regularly, there’s a range of professional and club-base expeditions on offer. Destinations include placid harbours like Nelson Bay and Port Phillip, to some of the best explorable shipwrecks in the Southern Hemisphere. John trains all the instructors on site, but staff also teach beginning divers during a two-day scuba course. “We also do boating licences now,” Cathy explains,
