Words by Kate Sears, photo Steve Brown What a year we’ve had at Frankly Frankston Magazine! We celebrated our second birthday, welcomed Anna Georgiou to the team, and launched a new annual foodie book called Eat.Drink Mornington Peninsula — which, incidentally, would make a great Christmas gift at just $29.99. We hope you enjoy this double edition covering December and January and encourage you to keep your eyes peeled for our social media posts throughout summer for some www.franklyfrankston.com.au
great holiday activity ideas, engaging reads, and tasty treats to enjoy in Frankston and the Peninsula. Our January issue of Mornington Peninsula Magazine is also a must-have — it’s the biggest issue of the year and it’s packed with great reading for those lazy summer days at the beach or while you’re enjoying a glass of wine after the kids have gone to bed — it’s your summer break too, you know! Take some time to rejuvenate for 2019 — it’s going to be another amazing year. Most importantly,
please be safe this summer. Don that wide-brimmed hat, apply that coconut-scented sunscreen, stay in the shade, be aware of rips at the beach and keep up the water intake on those hot-as days. Make sure to look after your loved ones — pets included — as the mercury climbs, and be extra alert on total fire ban days. And as always, be very careful on our roads as holidaymakers flock to the Peninsula and Frankston. We wish you a very Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New
Year, and we can’t wait to see what 2019 brings to our beautiful little corner of the world. Don’t forget to visit eatdrinkmorningtonpeninsula. com.au to find your nearest stockist to get your hands on our new food and wine bible, and make your summer unforgettable as you discover the Peninsula’s stunning wineries, breweries, restaurants, cafes and more. Have a fantastic holiday season from the Frankly Frankston & Mornington Peninsula Magazine team. DECEMBER/JANUARY 2019

Each December the canals of Patterson Lakes are transformed, showcasing extravagant Christmas decorations adorning canalfronting properties. I call it ‘magic on the water’. The reflection of flashing lights on the water can be enjoyed by boat or kayak once you have launched from Patterson River. Heading through the main floodgates, you’ll be met by flashing reindeer, synchronised lights and inflatable Santas as you meander your way along the canal system. Travelling east back along Patterson River, you can stop off at the town centre at the newly constructed moorings and dine in or grab a takeaway dinner. Oh, but let’s not forget two important events that are quickly becoming Christmas traditions. From ballet on the water to creating some spectacular airborne magic, the Southern Waters Ski Show Team’s Christmas show

will be enjoyed by many on December 14 from 6pm at the National Water Sports Centre. It even includes a special visit from the ‘man in red’! In impressive fashion on December 15 at 5pm, the annual SUP Christmas Social Paddle, hosted by Sunny King, will see almost 100 stand-up paddle boards take to Patterson River. “It’s a great family event that we do every year and it’s one of the biggest events in Victoria participation-wise,” says founder Nick King. So that’s a wrap! Thanks to everyone for their support this year and enjoy the summer break. CAMERON HOWE camhowe.com Everything we love about Frankston, fresh every month

Protect your eyes in style Summer has finally arrived and we have an array of stylish frames in beautiful colours from the popular crystal and blush through to rich red and purple hues. However, as the sun is now hopefully firing on all cylinders, it would be remiss of me not to focus on the importance of sun protection for your eyes. Much emphasis is placed on protecting our skin from harmful UV rays but it is just as essential to protect our eyes. A quality pair of polarised sunglasses which adhere to Australian UV standards will not only assist with glare but can also aid in avoiding or slowing the formation of harmful eye conditions. Common complaints in Australia are cataracts (clouding of the lens) and pterygiums which are a small growth on the cornea that can spread to cover the iris. However, not all polarised lenses offer the same level of protection. Maui Jim www.franklyfrankston.com.au
are one of the world leaders, offering premium lenses that can eliminate 99.9% of glare and block 100% UV whilst offering exceptional clarity. Once you’ve tried these lenses there is often no turning back and we find our customers do become loyal to this brand. Mirrored sunglasses are the trend for this season from muted gold through to cool blues and soft rose gold. We always ensure to stock a fabulous range of fashion sunglasses most of which can be fitted with prescription lenses. Pop in and have some fun trying our different styles and we can discuss the most appropriate lenses to suit your lifestyle and budget. Have fun in the sun! It was probably only a few weeks ago that you started even thinking about Christmas, but the Baden Powell Park Scout Group has been thinking about Christmas trees for months. A great deal of organisation goes into making sure the Scouts have the most beautiful tree available for your home. The group will be selling gorgeous trees from two locations this year — at the Scout hall on the corner of Baden Powell Drive and Humphries Rd, and from Frankston Bunnings at the Frankston Power Centre. The Scouts will be there from 8am2pm each weekend in the lead-up to Christmas. All you have to do is bring your family and Christmas spirit and let the group’s Christmas experts help you find the best tree to suit your needs. They’ll ask all the appropriate probing questions, such as “What size tree you are after? How tall is your ceiling? Is it going in the corner of the room or taking pride of place in the lounge window? What worked last year? Do you need a stand?” Most importantly, they’ll ask “Can we fit it in your car?” Don’t worry www.franklyfrankston.com.au
if they can’t, however — if you live in South Frankston or Mount Eliza, they can even deliver it for you and take it away in the New Year. Just go online at bpp.org.au, where you can also pre-order your tree for a totally hasslefree time of it. Then all you need to do is get your decorations ready and decide who has the honour this year of putting the star on top.

with Yazmine Lomax BY KATE SEARS Two years ago, a wee Irish lass wandered into our office to ask about writing positions. Since then, Yazmine Lomax’s interviews with fascinating Peninsula residents have featured in Mornington Peninsula Magazine’s In Conversation and Frankly Frankston Magazine’s Frankly Speaking. We tracked her down for one last interview before she left to travel overseas. This time, however, we’re the ones asking the questions. When did your love of writing begin? I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t writing. I loved making ‘books’ from sheets of folded A4 paper when I was very little and thankfully was always encouraged to write throughout primary and high school at Padua College. I remember being especially inspired to write after reading the Harry Potter series for the first time when I was about nine years old. What’s your favourite style of writing or subject to write about? I love interviewing interesting people. It’s so exciting to learn more about people I admire and find the questions that will give the best information. I’m excited to try out different styles and subjects in the future; I’m a huge music fan so would love to get more into music journalism, and I’d be super-interested in trying my hand at crime writing. Where else has your writing taken you? I spent a semester in my final year of university studying in Boston, which is my favourite place in the world. The college I studied at there had so many clubs and publications and I loved getting involved with those. After that I interned at a magazine group in Dublin, which was also fantastic. The great thing about writing is that you can tie it in with your existing travel plans.

heart-warming comics. At 29, Stephen Elliget takes inspiration from his life experiences, video games, comical jokes and pop culture references to create comics that not only get the chuckles flowing but also encourage his readers to spread the joy by
sharing his comics with their friends on social media. His preferred source of inspiration is to encapsulate a moment that happened to himself or a friend, and share the humour or joy that he got out of it. Often, a lot of conversations with friends that have included endless laughter and in-jokes
have inevitably become a comic — no brainstorming required. While growing up in Baxter, Stephen went through the phase of drawing the typical suspects like dragons, wolves, and Dragon Ball Z characters. His father was a teacher, so Stephen would stay back after high school

playing in the computer lab while his dad wrapped up his work day. He’s self-taught and has progressed his digital skills from drawing with a mouse in Microsoft Paint and making stick figure animations in PowerPoint to using Photoshop and a tablet to paint digitally. Having been an avid drawer since he was a kid,
Stephen moved on to study an advanced Diploma of Multimedia at Chisholm, then went on to complete a Bachelor of Multimedia Design at Swinburne. It was in 2010 in his first year at university that Total BS Comics was born from a desire to create short narratives that he could share with others. Bryce, his friend and coowner of their brand, not only
brought the ‘B’ to the name and subbed the comic dialogue (with high sarcasm levels) but also introduced Stephen to the world of web comics. They’d spend hours engaging in back and forth banter over coffee with Stephen manning the sketch book, where they’d find themselves saying, “Hey, that’d make a good comic!” “I realised that the ideas I get the most excited about tend to be the ones that come from the heart and from my own experiences,” said Stephen. “So I’ve been trying to embrace my own ideas a bit more.” After a six-year hiatus due to full-time work and general life stuff getting the way, Stephen decided it was time to revive the comic with a fresh illustration style and new character www.franklyfrankston.com.au
designs, with Bryce taking a step back while remaining Stephen’s sounding board. Ultimately, Stephen’s dream is that one day the comic takes off to truly become something that he could dedicate more time to. “I follow a lot of artists on Instagram — some super-talented, some who just post the occasional scribble. I honestly just love seeing an illustration that portrays a bit of heart from the person who drew it. That’s what I admire the most, capturing an honest or emotive moment.” To get your giggle on, check out Stephen’s work on Facebook at TotalBSComics or follow the comics on Instagram at totalbscomics

Journeys Rediscovered
Relax, rewind and renew on a journey of discovery BY KIRSTY THOMAS-THOEUN Just like many of us, I found myself stressed and always meeting deadlines or others’ expectations. I realised I had lost a sense of me and where I wanted to be. Hence through my own exploration of this I have designed some wonderful Small Group Journeys for ladies.
Sri Lanka trip in October 2019 or March 2020 to do just that. Indulge in Ayurveda, meditate with monks, learn to cook Sri Lankan curries, enjoy specially curated wellness packages. Visit rustic villages interacting with local communities. Enjoy five-star boutique accommodation throughout.
Travel can be a wonderful way to rediscover what you want, especially when instead of merely relaxing on a beach you decide to travel with a group of like-minded ladies on a truly immersive journey. Take in the sights, relax with wellness or yoga, and enjoy the sounds and shopping while giving back to local communities through volunteering opportunities at temples and NGOs.
Or join our Heart & Soul journey to India and Nepal. Discover Delhi, India’s spiritual heart Varanasi and Rajasthan before continuing to Nepal. Contact Journeys Rediscovered to book or to find out about our other ladies’ tours to Cambodia or Myanmar. What are you waiting for?
I believe to truly experience a destination requires you to immerse yourself in the culture and people of the country you are visiting. Join Journeys Rediscovered on our Sensory www.franklyfrankston.com.au

Frankly Frankston Magazine speaks to
Dunkley federal Liberal MP Chris Crewther about the arrival of his second child and the areas he’s focusing on in Parliament to support families. We hear that you and your wife, Grace, just had your second child in early December. What do you hope the future will be like for your little ones in Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula? Yes, we’ve just brought into the world a little brother for our three-year-old daughter Yasmin. She’s very excited, and increasingly aware that she’ll no longer be able to solely rule the roost! I’m really positive about the future in our area, as it’s a great place to raise a family. We have the best of the city, country and coast. Our community is friendly and inclusive and there is so much for kids to do. That’s why so many families are moving into our area. It will only get better for families due to our strong community bonds and willingness to give things a go.
What have you put in motion for Frankston and Peninsula families? I’ve fought to ensure that local families are better connected and supported. I’ve secured budgeted federal funding to extend metro rail from Frankston to the hospital/university, Langwarrin and Baxter, meaning families will spend less time commuting and more time together; locked in record funding for Community Support Frankston; helped bring back the City Life/Breakfast Club meals service for those in need; obtained funding for 123Read2Me, who give free books to those who need them; achieved funding for new and upgraded facilities at our sporting and community clubs; helped secure increased funding for aged care; and more. What’s one area you’ve focused on in Parliament to support families? I’ve focused on supporting young children’s crucial development between ages 0-5. In this space, for example, we’ve increased the rebate for childcare to up to 85 per cent for families on low incomes, removed the childcare rebate cap altogether for families earning under $185,000, and increased the rebate cap to $10,000 for families above that.

The benefits of retirement village living There is so much more to retirement villages than simply purpose-built accommodation. A retirement village is your home, your community. It’s a place to meet new friends and discover new interests. You can be involved in village activities as much or as little as you like — the choice is yours. Services and facilities are right at your door, as is the opportunity for some fun and exercise, all in a safe and friendly environment.
Retirement villages enhance personal well-being by specifically addressing the key elements that comprise a person’s overall sense of well-being. Meaningful social ties have a positive impact on both physical and mental well-being. Most surveys show — whether it’s individual providers or the national McCrindle Baynes Census — that the vast majority of the approximate 184,000 people who live in retirement villages across Australia are happy — and happier than they were before making the move. Retirement villages are a way for you to step into a low-maintenance lifestyle. Forget struggling to clean the gutters, mow the lawns or spending days pulling weeds — retirement living offers a low-maintenance lifestyle. That means more time to do the things you actually enjoy. As your care needs change over time you may require additional support to maintain your independent lifestyle. Villages can provide additional onsite home and lifestyle services, including personal care, housekeeping, laundry, meal preparation, transport, shopping and the monitoring of medications on a feeper-service basis. Australian Unity’s focus is to enhance the wellbeing of seniors by providing retirement living that aims to meet physical and social needs. Research shows that retirement village residents consistently achieve a higher sense of well-being than the general population. Diversity and community connections are key ingredients to Australian Unity villages. Keep an eye on your fillet, the beagle has landed BY KATE SEARS When there’s a café called Two Boys One Beagle and A Coffee Shop, there’s a guarantee that said beagle is a big part of the café. In this case, dear Penelope has been labelled too naughty for the quirky pink café in Frankston. Miss Penelope is six years old, is not very well behaved and has proved quite hard to be trained. What’s worse is she loves to eat, which has led to her stealing an eye fillet steak off the bench that was earmarked for her parents’ dinner, and on another occasion she stole a whole banana loaf. Now it’s alarmingly clear why she can’t visit the café. Nelly, as she’s fondly known, is like most pampered pooches in that she thinks she’s a person and is often found sleeping on the couch or bed — but only when she needs a nap after jumping on the furniture and tearing it up.
“She was a very cute puppy and was very boisterous,” said owner Mikaela. “We were told she’d calm down by the age of three, yet she’s still crazy! She’s so full of energy and loves our kids. Our oldest is three years old and enjoys running around the house and pulling her tail.” You won’t find this little one having play dates because at a young age she was attacked by another dog and she’s been funny around other dogs ever since. Luckily, Wednesday keeps her social calendar full. Wednesday is Mikaela’s nine-year-old cat, and the pair are best friends having grown up together. Penelope loves to play fight with Wednesday; Wednesday, however, does not. He prefers to daydream about his next attempt at escaping — drooling on his owner included — and his perfect day is one spent lazing about with Penelope. What charmed lives!
“You feel fierce, fit and tough. The rush is awesome.”

Macro photography allows you to get in close and capture the intricate details of our natural world. Most cameras, whether compact or lens interchangeable, have a macro setting that assists in focusing closely on small details with a shallow

With orchids, a “throat shot” of the labellum is usually what I like to focus on, giving as much detail to the intricate parts of the flower as possible. Windy weather, or even a gentle breeze, can make it hard to focus. In these situations I tend to increase the shutter speed and change my focus to AI-SERVO, AP-C, or Continuous so the camera

Manual focus can be an excellent tool when you are really struggling, as often the camera will want to focus on the background or foreground and ignore the main subject. Your aperture assists in controlling your depth of field or how much is in focus; f2.8 gives you a small area of focus, whereas f11 will have more of the orchid in focus. Alternatively, if all else fails, take a step back and then crop the image in post-production. Do your research and study orchids and their leaves so you know what to look for. Always remember that native flora and fauna is protected under law, so take only memories and a photograph with you. Most importantly, enjoy! Ricky Capo likes going fast. Needs to feel the adrenaline. To feel the chassis beneath his posterior while the engine growls. This 22-year-old Mount Eliza native started racing gokarts when he was seven years old and he hasn’t stopped putting the pedal to the metal since. Motorsport has got him hook, line and sinker. Why? “Because it’s the most addictive thing there is. I can’t stop chasing it; it’s like a drug. The more you do it, the more you need,” he exclaims.
Ready, set, go . . . Growing up with his younger sister, stayat-home mum and engineer dad, Ricky loved the whole go-karting scene. He won the Victorian and Tasmanian State Championships in karting and then the Formula 3 championship. This kid from the ‘burbs still has a chuckle about how he could race on the track but had to be in the car with his mum to drive on the road, especially when he started racing cars at 17. He continues. “It was a natural progression from go-karting. Racing cars is safer than driving on the road even though there’s more speed involved. You’re going in the one direction and you usually have confidence in the other drivers. Other racers use their mirrors and have a great understanding of what their competitors are doing.” Usually! “It’s very physically and mentally demanding. The g-force alone can be a challenge and you’ve got to be able to concentrate for a long time,” says this weight-lifting, cycling and jogging junkie. He spent nine months in Europe last year racing and an endurance LMP3 race went for four hours. He continues. “LMP3 cars are entry-level prototype class closed cars which introduce young drivers and their teams to endurance driving. There were

six races in the season and each race was four hours in total. You take turns with your driver partner. One driver is in the car for two hours and then you swap. It’s quite intense.” Over those nine months spent in Europe racing, Ricky drove on the Silverstone Circuit in the UK, the Paul Ricard in France, the Red Bull Ring motorsport track in Austria, Portimão in Portugal, the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium and on the Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Italy. He came first in Italy. This semi-professional music-loving racing car driver has set his sights big. With experience driving Formula 3 and pimped-up GT and super 2/supercars (which is the lower division of the V8 supercars), he’s well on his way to where the big guys play — Formula 1. He concludes. “It’s an expensive and technologically advanced sport these days. When you’re not on the track you’re going over data, using cockpit simulators, looking at car performance. You’ve also got to find sponsors, which I am always looking for, and a team to take care of the tyres, fuel . . . there’s a lot more to it than just slipping in the seat and turning on the engine. But I love it.”

For more than 75 years, Frankston Theatre Group has continuously provided opportunities for involvement in community theatre. This year, its youth arm, under its new name of ACT II, produced a much-loved classic — Charley’s Aunt — in a semiimmersive style. At the recent Victorian Drama League Awards, ACT II’s enthusiasm and creativity were rewarded when it won the award for Best Costume Design and picked up no fewer than two special Adjudicator’s Awards, had cast member Edward Church nominated for Best Support Actor in a Comedy Role for his role as Brassett, and the production itself was nominated for Best Comedy Production overall. All members of ACT II are aged between 16 and 26, and for some Charley’s Aunt was their first stage experience. Frankston Theatre Group — both the parent group and ACT II — always publishes auditions and other relevant details on Facebook and welcomes newcomers to both groups. If you think you’d like to take an audience on a shared voyage through comedy or drama, contact FTG or check out its website. And remember, there are lots of great community theatre groups. Some specialise in music theatre, some in ancient or classical theatre, but all need creative, enthusiastic people to keep them powering along. Credited by many as the inventor of soul music, Cooke began his career in gospel bands, later moving to ‘secular music’ and creating a sound that broke the colour divide. More than sharp suits, luxury cars, generous women and earthy language, Cooke’s crystal-clear, velvet-smooth voice had the melodies to match and created a new genre of music. Cooke broke race and religious barriers in the 1950s and 1960s and became one of the best-known

Robin Hood Showing at Hoyts, Wells St, Frankston After an opening scene showing an intense battle, you’re put at ease by the charismatic charm of Taron Egerton, who many may recognise as the loveable goofball turned secret agent Eggsy from Kingsman: Secret Service and Kingsman: The Golden Circle. The Robin Hood narrative that we remember from our childhood this time is portrayed as a darker and more sinister tale. It’s the legend you know and the story you don’t (yet). We learn that Robin has become a war-hardened crusader, and alongside his Moorish commander, Little John, played by Jamie Foxx, the pair mount an audacious revolt against the corrupt English Crown, led by the Sheriff of Nottingham, superbly performed by Aussie-born Ben Mendelsohn (Bloodlines and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story).
( 38
Frankly Frankston
Ben’s depiction of the dictator is on point with his ability to summon a feeling of hatred from the audience towards his character as he places a bounty on Robin and destroys the city. Even without his signature black eyeliner, you’ll recognise Australian comedian and actor Tim Minchin, who plays Friar Tuck, by his comedic quips and relaxed tone as he breaks up the slightly macabre scenes by adding comedic value. Rounding out the ensemble is Jamie Dornan, who plays Will Scarlet, who, even with his charming Irish accent, struggles to keep Marion by his side compared to his romance in the Fifty Shades of Grey films. Robin’s the same courageous, strong-willed and passionate Robin of Loxley we’ve come to love — cheekiness included. He’s filled with a desire to right the wrongs,
and with Little John by his side he becomes the warrior we know as Robin Hood. Together they form a brotherly bond as they scheme, tirelessly train, and hide their intentions from his past lover, Marion (Eve Hewson), who has moved on with Will Scarlet thanks to the Sheriff’s conspiring ways. As the pair set out to inspire the commoners to revolt, we see the transition from the Lord of Loxley to the iconic Robin Hood. Action is around every corner as we watch Robin steal money from the rich and eventually steal the girl too, sandwiched between action scenes, vicious fights, explosions, and even a horse chase up a flight of stairs. The ending leaves an opening for a second instalment, which means we’ll be first in line to catch this skilled archer reignite his chemistry with Marion. KATE SEARS HHHH

STATION STREET STUDIO
Unwind at Yogaharta’s wellness sanctuary In the heart of Hartnett Drive in Seaford is a sanctuary called Yogaharta Yoga & Wellness Centre. The yoga studio is less about ‘nailing that perfect pose’ or pushing your body past its capabilities, and more about finding yourself and your community. With a wide variety of classes to suit everybody, from a beginner to the more experienced, you can rest assured you will come away feeling more connected to yourself and part of a supportive and encouraging family. “I just think yoga and meditation should be accessible for everyone,” said owner Ruth. “It’s helped me so much in my life. I’m ready to give back.” New clients pay just $25 for their first 14 days and have access to unlimited classes, and a 15 per cent discount is given to seniors, students and concession card holders. With 26 classes a week, including yoga, meditation, pranayama, and qi gong, you’re bound to find the right classes for you.
In addition to these classes, Yogaharta hosts a free philosophy class each week and free monthly community events, including Conscious Cinema and kirtan, various workshops, and Ayurvedic services are available on Thursdays. To complement the wellness centre, a new infrared sauna has just been installed for members to enjoy. Members can pay for casual sessions or sign up for a direct debit, along with other discounts thrown in for free. Check out the affordable pricing options on the website to find one that suits you. Summertime at Guildford’s You’ll discover Guildan Ozbek’s restaurant café two doors down from her flourishing other venture, Florist at Seaford. Guildford’s Restaurant Café encompasses Guildan’s passion for flowers and her rich Turkish background, which have combined to invent the perfect summer backdrop to your longoverdue catch-ups with friends and family over the summer holidays. After setting foot in the cafe, you’re transfixed as your embrace the Moroccan lamps, authentic evil eyes, Turkish patterns, bountiful flowers and relaxed sunny courtyard. Pull up a chair in the courtyard and share an antipasto platter with your nearest and dearest as you gossip over wines and cocktails on those balmy summer nights. Guildan and her partner Jon never tire of hearing that their customers have fallen in love with the décor and vibrant atmosphere at their 120-seat café. Guildford’s Restaurant Café has been labelled a ‘special place’ by their adoring customers, who insist that the area has simply needed something like this for years — and the couple delivered. Wander over from the Seaford beach after a day in the sun to enjoy a feast of dishes set to ignite your senses. It transpired that in having a Turkish background the couple have in turn given the dishes a striking balance of Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and Turkish cuisine.

It’s not easy to survive as a small business in today’s tough competitive market, particularly with large department stores expanding their businesses to supply a wider variety of products. But one small Frankston business has withstood the test of time for almost 75 years — Peninsula Star Cycles. “I think it comes down to good old-fashioned customer service, quality products and workmanship, and having staff who are passionate about our industry,” said store manager John
Billing. Recently John and his staff were thrilled to get a visit from a foundation customer, Don Freak. Originally from Adelaide, Don shared his memories of having not long returned from serving in the Navy during World War II and meeting a Melbourne girl before moving to Frankston to settle down with her. Don’s passion for cycling led him to Peninsula Star Cycles, where he soon found himself on the store’s pro team in the late ‘40s. He explained. “Our track back then was from the cemetery to where
the RSL is today. Of course, it was all dirt roads back then. Abe (who founded the store in 1946) would also hire a truck for the team and we’d put a bench seat in the back so we could go with our bikes to compete on the old timber velodrome near the city.” Since opening in 1946, the store has seen three owners, sold numerous brands and added two floors. “As Frankston and the Peninsula have grown and cycling’s evolved, we too have also had to grow and change to suit,” John said. “Seventy-two years ago, things like electric bikes and LED rechargeable lighting were non-existent. But we haven’t forgotten where we came from and why we have survived all this time, and that is why we are so committed to our customers’ needs.” PENINSULA STAR CYCLES A: 48 Playne St, Frankston T: 9783 2266

BY KATE SEARS Orwil Street Community House’s Georgina Portelli has been the coordinator for 16 years, yet her roots in the house date back many years. Georgina tirelessly puts together term programs, interviews new facilitators, looks out for new group activity themes, and ultimately welcomes all who stop by along with her team of 30 volunteers — some of whom have been there for 15 years. “Everyone’s welcome at the front door from any walk of life,” said Georgina. “There’s always a friendly face to welcome you inside and offer a coffee or tea before a group meeting or a free class. You can join us in the lounge room at any time, even if you don’t have an event to attend. Just come and have a chat. We believe it’s great for anxiety and stress to just have a relaxed chat with a welcoming volunteer.” There are three councillors on board, five reiki practitioners and a psychologist. The groups cater for women, men, and kids, and you can

join a support group or activity group via a donation. Classes vary every term but always have a balance of options on offer for the community, including meditation, reiki, chair yoga, IT and mindfulness classes — it’s all here and suggestions are always taken on board. It’s also somewhere community groups can meet or even hire a room on a regular basis. You can help provide essentials such as coffee, tea and toilet paper by offering $5 when you first attend a program or use a service at the house. An annual $5 contribution gives you a laminated Friends of Orwil Street Community House card. Of course, donations are welcome at any time. “We try to keep very positive and encourage you to leave your troubles outside. It’s a time to enjoy the peace and quiet and release the stress and tension,” said Georgina. The Term 1, 2019 program is now available either through the website — orwilst.org.au — or by contacting Orwil Street Community House. Everything we love about Frankston, fresh every month

Let the world see you smile “Smile and the world smiles with you,” wrote Stanley Gordon West — and how right he was. A smile is incredibly infectious; it is often the first thing we notice about another person, and it makes us feel better.
Specialist orthodontist Dr Peter A. Scott knows this too, and for more than 30 years he and his team have been creating beautiful smiles on the Mornington Peninsula. Peter is also a consultant orthodontist at the Royal Children’s Hospital and offers orthodontic care to children, teens and adults in the inner Melbourne areas as well as across the Peninsula. The friendly team of experienced staff at Dr Peter Scott Orthodontist in Frankston will provide care and guidance to families and individuals throughout their entire orthodontic journey. With their expertise in child and adult orthodontics — braces, invisible braces, clear aligners (including Invisalign), removable and fixed functional appliances — as well as digital orthodontics, they will help you achieve a winning smile that will last a lifetime. They specialise in the early assessment of dental development and facial growth. The ideal age for an initial assessment is seven to nine years, and early intervention where appropriate is recommended for the best outcome No referral is required at Dr Peter Scott Orthodontist and interest-free payment plans are available. So what are you waiting for? Make an appointment today — and smile! DR PETER SCOTT ORTHODONTIST A: 13 Beach St, Frankston T: 9783 4511 W: drpeterscottorthodontist.com.au FB: drpeterscottorthodontist

Cafe Moto Royalty in a glass This summer, Cafe Moto takes fish and chips by the beach to a whole new level. Positioned metres from one of Melbourne’s best kept secret beaches, and by the edge of the Patterson River for those boaters among us, Cafe Moto is ramping up its summer cocktails to ensure they are the perfect accompaniment to a lazy day on the water. Café Moto’s favourite is The Queen Mother’s Pink Gin — a delightful blend of premium pink gin with tonic and finished with seasonal berries and rosemary. It’s perfectly paired with the Salt & Vinegar — steamed freshly caught fish of the day, sautéed greens, fish jus, and pomme frites sprinkled with black vinegar dust. And why is it called The Queen Mother’s Pink Gin? Well, you’ll have to drop in and ask one of the staff to relay the off-beat story behind this one! Cafe Moto is open seven days a week. Check the website for opening hours and Sunday session dates. CAFÉ MOTO AUSTRALIA A: 611 Nepean Highway, Carrum T: 9773 3542 W: cafemotoaustralia.com.au FB: Café Moto Australia

The Best cocktails to try this summer! GeonBae Soju so good A short walk from the Frankston Pier and foreshore, you’ll discover that each table at Geonbae has a Korean barbecue built into it. Bask in the view of Kananook Creek with the sun setting over Port Phillip Bay on those warm summer nights with a cold drink in hand within the licensed outdoor dining area. Choose from many flavours of soju, teas, Korean beers on tap or in bottles, Korean soft drinks, your usual cocktails or take the full experience and try a Korean cocktail like Geonbae’s signature summer delight — the Watermelon Soju. It’s unlike anything you’ve had before. This vibrant cocktail has a tangy combination of soju, ginger, vodka, lime and watermelon. It’s a breath of cool fresh air but in a cocktail. Geonbae is a Korean noun that translates to “bottoms up” and “cheers” — it’s what you say before you down your soju. So, with the Watermelon Soju in hand, we say Geonbae! Poolside paradise with dual living allure Property of the month
A tranquil Mornington court location, bespoke design and dual living potential places this poolside home in a league of its own. Rarely do you find a house of this stature — with six bedrooms, a study and three separate living zones — all on one single level. There is also the potential to modify the rear wing to create a self-contained one or two-bedroom villa for grandparents, extended or blended family living. Set on 870sq m (approx), the house features a private master suite with a gas log fire, a huge, fully fitted walk-in robe, a powder room and designer ensuite. The central hub includes a stunning openplan kitchen, meals and living room overlooking the pool and alfresco area, with a built-in fire pit. A remote double garage with side roller door, secure undercover boat/caravan storage, ducted gas heating, split-system airconditioning, polished karri hardwood floors, established landscaped gardens and a 5000-litre water tank are just some of the features of this exceptional family home. McCrae Residences, the 34-apartment development in the heart of Dandenong, are not only wonderfully designed internally with all expected modern features, residents can literally walk to everything in minutes. Markets, shops, cafes, public transport, cinemas and entertainment are all just a stroll down the road. McCrae Residences are also close to the wondrous Dandenong Ranges, whose attractions include the ‘sky-high’ viewing platform, waterfall walks, hikes and the 1000 Steps Kokoda Track Memorial Walk, a Melbourne tradition for the active challenge-seeker. Multiple golf courses are at one’s fingertips, and the beautiful Mornington Peninsula wine country is just a short 20-minute drive away. Developers say that from an investment perspective, the recent local and state government investment has flagged Dandenong as an area of future capital growth. “Dandenong is the commercial heart of the greater southeast Melbourne region. The Dandenong region produces a massive 42 per cent of Victoria’s commercial output and the government has ensured that this figure will continue to rise. Recently, the region has seen $290 million of State Government investment and $400 million of private investment into businesses, commercial property and government departments in the area.

“Additionally, the Government has expanded its public offices in Dandenong, particularly in the areas of health and administration. All of this equates to a strengthened rental market in central Dandenong as people follow the areas where their work is located.” McCrae Residences are extremely well-appointed one and two-bedroom homes, thus representing attractive options for the owner-occupier. However, as an investment, the properties present a very unique opportunity because of the potential for capital growth over coming years. Construction has just commenced and is likely to be completed in about 14 months. Awnings from Dollar Curtains + Blinds are the ultimate product for protection against the harsh Australian sun. Reducing sunlight and glare on your windows, they offer protection from sun damage on inside furniture, furnishings and floor coverings. More importantly, window awnings will greatly improve your home’s energy efficiency. Awnings are proven to significantly reduce cooling energy costs by keeping a standard home at a consistent and comfortable temperature throughout the summer months. Independent tests have shown they offer energy cost reductions of up to 58 per cent. DC+B’s range of high-quality outdoor fabrics block and reflect up to 95 per cent of solar energy before it reaches your window, keeping your house cool and saving you energy and money. Specially engineered and independently tested, DC+B’s awnings are designed to withstand high wind, a particular benefit in coastal areas. You can also enjoy outdoor entertaining with DC+B’s range of alfresco awnings. Their side retention system is an inspired way of adding an extra room to your home. The fabric is tensioned utilising a floating channel, preventing fabric blowouts or light gaps. With the fabric secured between the left and right channels, this system is ideal for enclosing courtyards, patios or balconies for sun, rain, wind and insect protection. All awnings are manufactured in Victoria by DC+B, ensuring factory direct prices, no hidden costs and the highest Australian-made quality. DC+B’s new Moorabbin Airport store is offering 15 per cent off awnings throughout December and 10 per cent off awnings throughout January.
