Everything we love about the peninsula, fresh every month

BY LIZ ROGERS

There’s a lot of talented young folk on the peninsula and a bunch of them are graduating from Mt Eliza Secondary College. Mornington Peninsula Magazine has been checking out the arts scene and has come up with three movie making young bloods who love living local, making films and taking photos. Vince Kinna (top pic) is currently doing VCE at Mt Eliza Secondary College but completed a Year 12 media subject in 2015. As part of his media component, his film This is Scootering www.youtube.com/watch?v=zm1hJ0ce5NE takes you on a journey through the world of athleticism, enthusiasm and unearthly scootering tricks. Movement and music play a big part in this film and although still at school, Vince is currently working on a fresh small film project and with a freelance photographer. Film and television school could be the next stop. Somerville local Lochie Gay (middle pic) is in his first year at the JMC Academy (Creative Industry Degrees) in South Melbourne after completing Year 12 at Mt Eliza Secondary College in 2015. His VCE film Life Through Spokes www. youtube.com/watch?v=H5eL_vdTu7I is a personal look inside the mind of the founder of one of the largest Human Powered Vehicles manufacturers. This factory to race track tale is about risk and reward. Lochie sees himself filming documentaries, being a camera operator or working as a foreign correspondent in the future. Nick Carrick (left) lives in Mornington. His 2015 VCE short film Stoke youtu.be/eLPzYJjGwpA about the talented Victorian surfer/surfboard shaper Jordie Brown operating out of his one-man shed in Skenes Creek, reveals this filmmaker’s skill for shooting wide angles and action. He is currently being mentored by local Peninsula artists and developing his photographic skills while working part time. He is soon to take shots of folk singer and The Voice finalist Nathan Hawes. The Peninsula really does have talent!

Woodleigh School VCE Excellence recognized

Woodleigh School Principal Jonathan Walter (L) with 2015 graduate Casley Rowan and her English teacher Christian O’Toole at the recent Premier’s Awards ceremony.

In 2015, more than 48,000 Victorian students studied English as part of their VCE. Last month, Casley Rowan (2015) was one of just 24 students to receive a Premier’s Award for her perfect study score of 50 in English. Woodleigh School Principal Jonathan Walter and Casley’s VCE English teacher Christian O’Toole were there to help celebrate this fantastic individual achievement. “My Woodleigh journey only really came to a close a few weeks ago when I was invited back to Melbourne to receive a VCE Premier’s Award – an achievement that culminated six years of incredible experiences and two years of dedication with my VCE English teacher, Christian O’Toole. Woodleigh fostered in me a sense of independence, adventure and, especially throughout Year 12, a love of literature and writing. Now, I am living in Canberra and attending ANU, and can safely say that I have thrown myself into life as a university student. My double degree of Law and International Security Studies keeps me very occupied with copious amounts of reading, which I balance with my role as social representative for UniLodge and the College of Asia and the Pacific Society. This winter I will be undertaking a course in Paris for a month which will give me credit towards my studies and I am very excited to revisit the friends I made on Woodleigh’s Year 10 French Exchange. To this point, life after Woodleigh has been very exciting and successful, and I am grateful for the solid grounding the school has given me in order to take on life’s new challenges.” Casley Rowan – Woodleigh School Graduate 2015, 2016 Premier’s Award recipient for English.

A pathway to new places

At the Chisholm 2016 Gala Awards, Ellie, pictured, was a finalist in the Vocational Student of the Year category. With a dream of working in early childhood, Ellie Hollway commenced her journey at Chisholm Rosebud in 2014, starting with the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) and the Certificate III in Early Childhood. Ellie explains: “Since starting my studies in early childhood education I have matured and grown so much. I’ve gained the knowledge and skills that I need in the early childhood industry. Since completing the course I have a pathway to broaden my knowledge and further my career in becoming a primary school teacher or owning a childcare centre. It’s also helped me get a job in childcare.” Ellie undertook a ‘career pathway’ at Chisholm Rosebud. This meant she started with VCAL and has the opportunity

to progress her education to a Bachelor. Her pathway was created at TAFE. Ellie’s personal achievements have proved the value of learning at TAFE. “It has inspired me to continue my learning journey by enrolling in the Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care in 2016 and then to join the Deakin at Your Doorstep Program through Chisholm Rosebud, to complete a Bachelor of Early Childhood Education.” For those looking for a career in early childhood education Ellie has this advice: “It’s hard work throughout the course and quite challenging sometimes, but it’s very rewarding.” Whatever your interest, Chisholm Rosebud has the course and pathway that’s right for you. Season four of the Seven Network’s House Rules has hit television screens and Mornington Peninsula locals Claire and Hagan have their eyes on the prize. This young couple’s home in Tootgarook is the smallest house in House Rules history and has been lovingly described as a “shoebox” by the hairdresser mum and plumber dad of two – Matilda, 4, and Darcy, 2. “We weren’t scared at all”, says 28-year-old Claire. “We entered the competition for a reason, to have a go at everything. In the end, we were grateful for whatever we ended up with.” I’m chatting with the couple at close of day on the phone. Filming ended late last year and the excitement of the whole experience is still with them. Rye born and bred boy Hagan, 27, talks. “We had lots of help from family and friends during the six-week shoot. It was a bit tough living inside each other’s pocket and travelling from state to state and being away from the girls, but we are stronger and communicating even better because of it.” Claire joins in. “We learnt so much from it. How to paint a house, styling tricks, how to organise our day - It was great! We’d love to do more renovating now.” This is how House Rules works - six teams from around Australia travel the country, hand over the house keys to strangers and vow to transform every room in the quest to win the grand prize of a mortgage-free existence

(and no – you don’t get to find out who wins yet!). The 2015 show was a ratings hit and watched by more than 11 million Aussies. Claire answered the ad for the 2016 season, applied and lo and behold… “The pressure got to us sometimes but we supported each other through it. All the couples were so nice. Luke and Cody are the best, and Joanna Griggs is one of the loveliest people you’d ever meet. And look at our house. It’s amazing.” So what’s next? “We’re both working and enjoying living in our new place”, says Claire. “We were really struggling to save and thought we’d never be able to renovate.” Proof that life can really change in an instant. Tune in to House Rules on Seven throughout June to see who wins.

Business-savvy salon owner nominated for national award BY ANDREA KELLETT

Mayko Hair founder and director Mel Bell is in the running to win the ultimate in professional accolades - a Telstra Business Women’s Award. The 28-year-old hairdresser and business woman has been nominated for the Young Business Women’s Award – a category that recognises the country’s most brilliant women in business, under the age of 30. The nomination was lodged by a client and it comes eight years after Mel opened the first of her two salons, at just 20 years old. She opened Mayko Hair McCrae in 2008 and Mayko Hair Mount Eliza in 2010.

At an age when many of her peers were partying, Mel was applying for a business loan. “I said to my Dad when I was 20, I’m going to open a salon, and I did,” she explains during a short break in Mt Eliza. She recalls walking the streets of McCrae with flyers and her Staffordshire Bull Terrier ‘Mayko’ (yes, the salons are named after her beloved pet, no longer with her), trying to build her profile. “This was literally done from scratch,” she explains. Hers is an innate passion to succeed and she does it with hard work and the backing of a supportive family.

Mum, also a qualified hairdresser, is her salon manager. Did her parents play a role in her success? “Absolutely!” she says. This year is shaping up as a big one, with Mel having just won a national competition to join ‘The Future Creatives 2016 Team’. That means she will spend 12 months on tour showcasing her colouring skills to 40,000-plus hairdressing professionals. The prize includes a brand ambassador contract, a portfolio shoot, a digital media campaign, industry magazine exposure, product development input and more. So just what is the key to all this success? “I stand for high quality, I value my

client exposure and my team and their education,” she says. Then there’s the all-important message to other young women: “Be fearless, don’t let anything stop you,” she says. Now there’s some #hairinspo worth sharing. Business is business BY LIZ ROGERS

There are people who keep fighting even when the odds are against them and there are those who just give up. There are those who fall over and stay there and some of us surrender even before the bout has begun. And then there is long time Frankston resident Johnny Famechon, the former World Featherweight Boxing Title holder and first Melburnian King of Moomba in 1970 and inductee into the Australia Sport Hall of Fame 1985, World Boxing Hall of Fame in Los Angeles 1997, Frankston Hall of Fame 2008 and Legend Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame 2013. It’s an honour to be sitting in a sporting legend’s home on a breezy South Frankston afternoon while the world continues to grind outside around us. The walls are plastered with photos of Mr Famechon and memorabilia from a time when boxers were a breed of sports people to be followed, admired and loved – (any-one remember TV Ringside in the 60s or World of Sport?) This is a world where Mr Famechon’s impressive sporting achievements have been recorded, revered and kept alive because Johnny’s (the boy born in Paris as Jean-Pierre Famechon in 1945 and who grew up in Melbourne) tale is one of

talent, courage and much more than slipping on some gloves and silk shorts. This is the man who everyone thought had died in 1991 after being hit by a car while jogging in Sydney. This is the man who has clawed his way back with the help of devoted wife Glenys and clinical counsellor Ragnar Purjie to be standing before me with a huge grin. His is a love story based on respect and determination. “The first fight is the biggest”, he explains. “There are no more nerves after that. You’ve got to knock them out before they get you. Play it cool. I was 16 when I had my first fight. Business is business.” “I knew it was for me when I punched the bag for the first time. Ambrose Palmer (trainer) got me ready.” Mr Famechon had a total of 67 fights of which he won 56 under the Featherweight title. There were six draws. “I don’t like them. You want to win”, he continues. It took him seven years to recover after his accident in Sydney.

He didn’t want to marry Glenys before he could walk her down the aisle so he made it happen and they finally tied the knot in 1997. He’s also written two autobiographies Fammo and The Method. Now his devoted fans figure it’s time to set the man in stone – or rather bronze. Gary Luscombe, supporter of the Johnny Famechon Statue Project which is assisting the Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame to raise $128,000 to complete and erect a 2.1 metre high bronze statue of Johnny in Ballam Park Frankston explains. “We believe there should be a statue of Johnny just like the Lionel Rose one located in Warragul. He is a Frankston and Australian sporting legend.” They only have $44,000 left to find! You can contact Gary on 0433 712 323 to help sponsor this important project or to make a donation. Johnny laughs. “I am a legend” and that’s true Mr Famechon, but for more reasons than one.

The Nordic Breeze is an example of the large tankers that are now visiting the Port of Melbourne. Registered in Monrovia, Liberia, she was built by Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea in 2011. Since the deepening of the shipping channel, ships like her are now able to arrive fully loaded. When she arrived in April 2015 she was carrying 124,395 metric tons of crude oil from the Djeno Terminal in The Congo, enough to fill more than 55 Olympic swimming pools. Nordic Breeze set new records for the greatest tonnage delivered, and the deepest draught (14.5m). With dimensions of 275m length, 86,266 gross tons and a deadweight tonnage of 158,597, she is classed as a Suezmax tanker. Not quite as long as the largest container ships (300m) or the largest cruise ships (345m) which call here, she is among the larger tankers in service. The giant ULCCs (Ultra Large Crude Carriers) at around 415m and VLCCs (Very Large Crude Carriers) around 330m, are too large for Port Phillip. Readers might be surprised to learn that very little of the crude petroleum unloaded at the Gellibrand Pier in Melbourne comes from the Middle East. Almost all of it comes from West Africa, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam and New Zealand. There are also many smaller tankers, carrying cargoes other than crude, that come to Melbourne and Geelong taking cargoes in and out. Specially constructed tankers, with stainless steel tanks or with a protective coating on their tanks, carry a wide range of different liquids including vegetable oils, chemicals (caustic soda, sulphuric acid, solvents, plastic polymers), refined petroleum products (ULP, jet-fuel, diesel, lubricating oils), bitumen and tallow. Container ships are probably the most commonly seen ships passing in and out of Port Phillip but tankers are a vital part of Victoria’s trade. SHELFIE Somers storm chaser Rose Steiner snapped this #shelfie at Dromana when wild weather smashed Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula on May 1, heralding the end of our Indian summer. Rose is a volunteer administrator with The Victorian Storm Chasers (VSC) and within two days of posting the image on the VSC Facebook page it had 8700 likes, 1342 shares and 610 comments. Rose shares the story behind this fantastic photograph with Mornington Peninsula Magazine: “I had been waiting for a storm for months now and was feeling storm deprived, when I saw that late Saturday night (April 30) - early Sunday morning (May 1) looked promising. My storm chaser buddies on the Victorian Storm Chasers Facebook page and I were watching the storms develop in South Australia and knew we had a good chance. It was a long night watching the radar and waiting to see if they would hold! When Sarah (my chase partner) said she could see lightning in the distance (she lives in McCrae), I knew it was time to hit the road. I left Somers at midnight and drove to the wall at Dromana and waited.

The lightning was some distance away but I set up my camera and tripod and snapped what I saw. It would have been a good hour or so of standing out with my camera, using the car as a wind break when I noticed the sky darken further. The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) had

issued a Detailed Severe Thunderstorm Warning for the Mornington Peninsula and when the lightning struck I could see why! The lightning lit up this beautiful ‘roll cloud’ that brought with it damaging winds (enough to rock my car considerably), intense lightning (bolts close to 50m from me) and heavy

rainfall. I managed to get my gear and myself in the car before it hit and eventually fell into bed just before 6am. More please mother nature!” BY ROSE STEINER (This image and others like it can be purchased by emailing Rose at rosemariesteinerphotography@gmail.com)

NAIDOC (National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee) week is a time for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community on the Mornington Peninsula to celebrate Australia’s long living ancient culture. “From the beginnings of early activism and advocacy for the Aboriginal community during a period of socio-cultural and political unrest and then social justice change, NAIDOC week offers the chance to come together and celebrate each year” says Mornington Peninsula Shire Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Officer and Heritage Archaeologist Adam Magennis. This year the celebrations begin with a NAIDOC Dinner Dance at the Frankston Arts Centre on July 1 from 7pm. Monday 4 sees flag raising events at the Willum Warrain Aboriginal Association at 10

Pound Road Hastings and at the Frankston City Council Civic Centre on the corner of Young and Davey Streets. The Frankston ceremony will be held at 10.30am while the time for the Hastings ceremony is yet to be decided - Call Willum Warrain on 5979 1391 for confirmation. An Aboriginal Arts display entitled Edge of Creation by Baluk Arts runs from 11am until 1pm at the Frankston Arts Centre on Monday 4 and includes the launch of the Baluk Book with storytelling and book sales. Thursday 7 July sees a Frankston/Mornington Peninsula Family Fun Day. There will also be traditional owners smoking ceremonies and cultural identity projects held over the week and elders will be taken to the annual Elders luncheon at the Aboriginal Advancement League in Thornbury. NAIDOC week gives all members of the community the opportunity to participate in the spirit of reconciliation and social harmony. Let’s celebrate together.

Man these guys are sweet and cute and they’ve got their heads screwed on properly to boot! I’m chatting with Woodlock – the trio of twenty something’s who have just returned from China where they have been playing to promote trade between the two countries. Bowen and brothers Eze and Zech are on a ride and they don’t want to get off. Woodlock (‘the man who dwells in the forest’) are becoming a band to be noticed and these singer songwriters intend to make their mark. Moving to Melbourne from New Zealand (where they were home schooled) Eze and Zech met up with Bowen at Mt Eliza Secondary College for their last couple of years of schooling and the rest of the story is about a young talented band trying to create music history. “Five of us went on a road trip around Australia in 2012. We lost two on the way,” Bowen (percussion) laughs. “Whoever could survive the caravan remained!” Woodlock writes songs from a biographical perspective. There are specific things that Zech and Eze need to get off their chests. They began uploading their songs to YouTube (Lemons, This Ain’t Love and Run) and busking in Melbourne and Sydney around four years ago. Their biggest gig was playing to 700 people at Max Watts Melbourne in October last year. They have also just performed at the Grand Hotel in Main Street Mornington (June 3rd) with local singer/songwriter Harrison Storm supporting (see this issue’s Common People to read more about Harrison). The next four months will be taken up with writing JUNE 2016 (55)

and spending time with family for these creative and determined young men. “This is a learning curve”, says Eze. “We want to make music that will last and that sends a message”. Their manager Ash Hills at 123Agency in Collingwood believes they can last the distance, and so do I. It’s all a matter of talent and you’ve just got to have some faith. Follow their Facebook page to check for up and coming gigs. WOODLOCK W: www.woodlock.com.au FB: www.facebook.com/WoodlockMusic

Singer, songwriter Harrison Storm How would you describe your style? It’s quite soft, relaxed and personal. Growing up by the beach has had a huge impact on my sound. What music inspires you and any local bands you’d recommend? I listened to a lot of Neil Young, Bob Dylan and Fleetwood Mac growing up, so I’m drawn to more introspective singer songwriters like Ben Howard, Nick Mulvey and Angus and Julia Stone. As far as local acts go, Young Vincent, Zombitches and Ruby Whiting are all making interesting music that I recommend checking out.

There’s a storm coming - or for many who already know Mornington local Harrison, it’s already landed. Harrison grew up in Mornington, moved to the city to study civil engineering for two and a half years and came back to ‘the best place on earth’ after realising that music and the beach were his true loves. He’s never looked back. Visit YouTube to check out his music.

When did you first become interested in being a musician? I’d been mucking around on mum’s guitar growing up and started really getting into it in high school. In my last year at Mt Eliza Secondary College I decided to jump up at a lunchtime performance with no-one really knowing I sung or played guitar. The response was pretty inspiring and I haven’t stopped since.

Everything we love about the peninsula, fresh every month

Where have you played and where can we see you play in the future? I busk nearly every week on Bourke St and Queen Vic Markets in Melbourne. It’s always a humbling experience to meet all the different sorts of people who walk the streets. I also play the odd wedding and have just supported Woodlock at The Grand in Mornington. After seeing The Beautiful Girls play at The Grand and hearing about other acts like Saskwatch and The Basics playing there too, it’s pretty exciting for me as someone who is a fan of live music and lives in Mornington.

I hope these sort of awesome acts keep playing there. My next local gig will be at MOTH (Music on the Hill) in Red Hill on July 1 with Sweet Jean. Do you have any views on the state of the music scene on the Mornington Peninsula? There are a bunch of talented musicians on the peninsula who need somewhere to play, so the more places that support original live music, where the focus isn’t selling $10 jugs but rather the artist, the better. And lastly, are there any other artists on the peninsula who come to mind when thinking about talent? Besides the musicians, there’s a lot of other great art being made. I follow photographer Hayden O’Neill on Instagram and love the way he captures the ocean and the Mornington Peninsula. A plan for jobs and growth in Dunkley Dunkley is a great part of Victoria and I will work with the community to make it even better. That’s the attitude Bruce Billson has brought to our community for 20 years and what I will carry on as a strong voice in Malcolm Turnbull’s team. The Turnbull Liberal Government’s Plan is carefully structured to provide jobs and growth and a secure future for the families of Dunkley. My number one priority is to ensure jobs are being created for local families. That is why we are cutting tax for the 16,000 small businesses in Dunkley and for hard working families. That is why we are investing in our PaTH programme to ensure young Australians have the skills and experience to get and keep a job. The Turnbull Liberal Government’s Plan delivers the benefits of a growing economy and a better community for all Dunkley residents. Carolyn Gleixner sets her sights on a win Labor candidate Carolyn Gleixner doesn’t mince words when it comes to her candidacy for the federal seat of Flinders. Her press release is headed: ‘Carolyn Gleixner ready to oust Greg Hunt’. And with that, the 27-yearold has put her seasoned Liberal opponent and his team on notice that she has set her sights to win. Ms Gleixner, who is Mornington Peninsula born and bred, has a Building Certificate, a Degree in Construction Management, a Masters in Project Management and a long-held passion for politics. She challenged the Liberals’ Martin Dixon for the State seat of Nepean at the 2014 State Election, significantly reducing his margin, and now “with the support of the community” she says she intends to go one better and win the Federal seat outright. “My career experience has given me a practical understanding of business efficiency and effectiveness, and a focus on solid outcomes, which I intend to put to good use in Canberra,” she said in her statement. Speaking one-on-one about what motivates her, she says she’s fed up with the Liberals’ performance nationally

and locally, loves where she lives and wants to make a difference. She lists numerous issues where voters can expect her to advocate strongly on their behalf in Canberra, such as Medicare bulk billing and pathology, transport, needs-based Gonski education for our schools, affordable tertiary education, addressing climate change, promoting alternative renewable energy use and innovation, and environmental protection for Point Nepean, our Ramsar-listed Western Port Bay and our national treasure, the Great Barrier Reef. She describes herself as a coffee lover with a strong practical streak, who enjoys taking her dogs Molly and Doon to the leash-free beach in Flinders. “I love living near the ocean and exploring the fantastic bushwalks we have on the Peninsula. We are so lucky in Australia,” she says. After a recent stint working in project management for a major construction company in Europe, the Flinders resident has chosen to work locally during the campaign, at the Flinders Bakehouse Café, while she prepares for the challenge ahead. Greens candidate goes full throttle for Flinders The next month will be “full throttle” for Willisa Hogarth after throwing her hat into the federal political ring for the first time as the Greens’ candidate for Flinders. The 33-year-old mother of three and acting state convenor for the Australian Greens Victoria is a political newcomer relative to Greg Hunt, who has held the seat since 2001, and she is full of passion. The opportunity to follow her political dream follows roles as Greens support candidate for Eastern Victoria at the 2014 State election and Greens campaign manager for the State seat of Gembrook. It also arises while

she completes the final year of her teaching degree. “I like being busy,” she explains. “I’m always this busy and I enjoy being connected to my community. All this stuff to me isn’t work.” Hogarth has always had a hint of politics in her future. Her parents are long-time unionists who encouraged her as she grew up to have a voice and while it seemed she might naturally move towards a future with the ALP, her heart led her to the Greens. “It was about five years ago when Gillard decided she was going to change the rules around refugees and re-open offshore detention,” she

explains. “My youngest daughter asked why we were doing that and I couldn’t answer. I remember thinking, ‘You know what? That’s not good enough’. At that point I started to look around at other options. I’d had a friend suggest the Greens and I looked into it and it was like seeing my own values on paper.’’ Her answer to a question about the biggest challenge for Flinders is decisive – “Access”. She says residents need better access to public transport, further education and training and medical facilities. The Pakenham resident is also an advocate for

Full steam ahead for Flinders incumbent

Greg Hunt has plenty of unfinished business as the federal Member for Flinders. The 50-year-old father of two has held the seat for the Liberal Party since 2001 and he is running for another term. Mornington Peninsula Magazine spoke with the seemingly tireless politician, sportsman and Richmond supporter about what drives him, what he is offering voters and his view on the challenges ahead. “I am fortunate to have a job that I love and find truly satisfying and thoroughly rewarding. I have the opportunity to make local, national and international changes,” he explains. “It is about challenging yourself on a daily basis but, most satisfyingly, it is about resolving issues for individuals in the local community who

may otherwise have struggled.” On his proudest achievements in this last term – apart from being appointed Environment Minister after the 2013 federal election and retaining the portfolio under the Turnbull Cabinet reshuffle – he lists the development of trade skills centres at Western Port ($1.1million), Phillip Island ($1.5million) and the southern peninsula ($5.4 million across Somerville and Rosebud); raising $75,000 on a 500km walk around the electorate for Abacus to build a new facility for children with autism; the $500 million federal investment in HMAS Cerberus; and development of a $5.9 million health and medical hub on Phillip Island. On unfinished business, he says he wants

Jeanette Swain wears many hats - environmentalist, scientist, teacher, mother and now federal Greens candidate for Dunkley.

Greens candidate keeps it local in Dunkley

The long-term Frankston resident has dipped her toes into the political waters before – she was the Victorian Greens’ candidate for Frankston at the 2014 State Election – and now she has put her hand up a second time, as The Australian Greens’ candidate for the federal seat of Dunkley. The energetic 49-year-old hopes to boost the profile of the Australian Greens locally, better the 2013 result in Dunkley where the party won 9.32% of first preference votes and, of course, represent the views of locals on a national level. She is ambitious and realistic at the same time about the challenge ahead. “It’s an important seat,” she says. “And it isn’t homogenous by any stretch of the imagination. I think it has a mental divide between the

people who focus on Frankston, the people who focus on Mornington and even the people who focus on Langwarrin.” She is inspired by “people-run campaigns that focus on locals rather than vested interests”. Ms Swain has worked extensively in the TAFE sector, managing registered training organisations and delivering education programs in conservation, environment, E-learning and quality management. Naturally, she is full of passion about that sector and about improving public transport and jobs for the residents of Dunkley. She has a Bachelor of Applied Science, a governance background and a love of music and good coffee. “I’m definitely a coffee tragic,” she admits. Ms Swain was raised in the Frankston/Mornington Peninsula area, attended Mt Eliza High School, has three sons and three stepsons and lists Frankston Beach as one of her favourite local spots. www.facebook.com/JSwain.Frankston

THE BUSINESS

More from our series by Jess Jones of Soar Collective. To bring some helpful tips for your business and talk about the exciting innovations of Soar Collective.

3 ways to grow a loyal and engaged community We have access to millions of people anytime and anywhere, with the ability to be connected to them online through a variety of platforms. But us humans want real, meaningful relationships offline too. We want to do business with people we feel we know. So how are you going to stand out and connect with your customers and build your community or tribe? It’s time to get to know your people. 1. W ho are they? Do you really know your customers or your ideal client? It’s one thing to rattle off your target market’s demographics, it’s another to know their psychographics; what’s meaningful to them, what are their interests, what are their values, how do they feel? Once you’ve nailed this, you’ll know how to communicate with them.

2. Where do they spend time online? Different businesses have different audiences. Many use social media to follow or find out about businesses, even before deciding to buy from or work with them. If you have a Facebook page, how do you use it? The sooner you realise the magic of social media as a tool to grow a connected and engaged community rather than expecting each post to convert to sales, the better. 3. Grow your list If you don’t have a mailing list, start now. The majority of consumers still prefer to receive permission-based email marketing over any other form of communication. Send relevant, helpful information and don’t make it all about selling. Be sure to include links back to your website and social media pages too.

VITAMIN C – DID YOU KNOW? Vitamin C has been proven as an excellent antioxidant. Did you know an enzyme called prolyl hydrolase assists in the synthesis of collagen? It is important for people who continue to smoke, thus destroying their Vitamin C, to take additional Vitamin C in an oral dose to assist the collagen in their skin. We often refer to “smoker’s” skin and this is due in part to the lack of Vitamin C in the system of a smoker. Topical Vitamin C is extremely important to assist “smoker’s” skin also, A MUST IN FACT. Vitamin C also protects against free radical damage and UV radiation changes in the skin. It is important to note as a topical Vitamin C, ascorbic acid is the least stable. “Ask your skin technician” says Adelle from Advanced Skin & Laser, “Topical Vitamin C products vary considerably”. TYPES OF SKIN CANCER Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) – the most common and least dangerous. BCCs grow slowly, appearing dry and scaly but can ulcerate as they grow. Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) – Less common, but can spread if not treated. SCCs can bleed easily and are often thickened, red and scaly, and may have a crust. Melanoma – can be life-threatening. The Sun Smart Advertising campaign

recommends ABCD – A = Asymmetry – uneven in size and shape; B = Border look for uneven borders; C = Colour – Look for unusual or uneven colour; D= Diameter – Look if the area is larger than 7mm. The above is a simple guideline – HAVE YOUR SKIN CHECKED BY A DOCTOR. REMOVAL OF SUN DAMAGE & HYPERPIGMENTATION Simple - one or two treatments. Ask Sue or Adelle at Advanced Skin and Laser. Your skin deserves the best and most experienced therapist, with over 17 years’ experience in this procedure. The benefits to your skin’s collagen are outstanding. IPL HAIR REMOVAL Long-lasting results with no need for continual re-treating each year. Adelle says results depend upon the experience of your technician and the “grunt” of your machine. Phone Advanced Skin & Laser for a quote and test patch, phone 9787 7475. Remember – Fibromas, Skin Tags, “barnacles” as Sue says. Smooth your lumps and bumps with experienced hands. No need for rough, dry skin. By Sue Verheyen ADVANCED SKIN & LASER CLINIC A: 5 Old Mornington Rd, Mt Eliza T: 9787 7475

Reconnect and heal with yoga Yoga is a healing journey. It is not dependent on your strength, flexibility, age or size. Dani Pritchard’s classes are structured to suit all abilities. Whether you are a beginner or a more experienced practitioner, she will meet you exactly where you are, encouraging you to personalise your practice so that you can celebrate your strengths and accept and honour your limitations. Dani’s classes are focused on reconnecting with the self through traditional classical yoga postures, harmonised with the flow of breath. Each class offers something different and is made up of a combination of flowing sequences and static holds. The focus is on holding the attention in the body, connecting with mind and breath while letting go of all the stuff that no longer serves us. Yoga holds a transformative power that can ground you, open you up, bring stillness into your busy world and show you the truth of who and where you really are. Treat yourself to an Obagi® RADIANCE Peel

at The Wellness Manor A great way to kick off a new skincare regimen is to begin with an intensive, rejuvenating, in-clinic peel at The Wellness Manor. With the ability to administer higher-strength chemical peels in-clinic, your medical skin clinician can perform a chemical peel that will set you on the path to smoother skin and improving the appearance of brown spots and fine lines. Chemical peels containing the beta hydroxy acid - salicylic acid are an ideal choice as this ingredient targets a number of skin concerns. Results are seen often after one treatment. Highstrength salicylic peels can target fine lines, brown spots and acne and your skin clinician will determine how many peels are required (between 1-6, 2-4 weeks apart).

The Wellness Manor is your destination for Obagi® Medical’s RADIANCE Peel - an ideal in-clinic chemical peel to target most skin concerns including brown spots, congested skin and fine lines. Its base is salicylic acid and a proprietary blend of AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) added to the formula to ensure results are maximised and noticeable, even after one treatment. Follow up with the correct take home skincare such as Obagi’s NuDerm® or C®-Rx systems, as recommended by your medical skin clinician, to ensure results are maintained. Mr Tim Brown has been consulting on the Mornington Peninsula for almost 10 years and in fact is a resident here! Mr Brown performs cosmetic plastic surgery and this can be done at Beleura Private Hospital in Mornington or St John of God Hospital in Berwick. He has recently moved into new, purpose-built facilities next to the hospital in Berwick and Frankston Private for his Peninsula patients. Many people ask why Mr Brown insists on using a hospital for his procedures and an overnight stay for most of them. All surgical procedures involving an anaesthetic that lasts more than one hour generally require an overnight stay to ensure that any drowsiness or nausea associated with prolonged exposure to anaesthetic are monitored properly. Although procedures such as breast augmentation require a much shorter anaesthetic, there is a risk of

bleeding which Mr Brown has found is increased in patients who mobilise less than six hours after their surgery. As he likes to review patients the day after surgery to answer questions and check the result, it makes sense to stay in overnight. In addition, all the nursing staff at Beleura Private Hospital and St John of God Hospital are very experienced in monitoring post operative care of Mr Brown’s patients, and will alert him early should they have any concerns. June sees Rams in changeable moods, ready to break free of old emotional patterns. You are aligned with a clear set of values which help you communicate clearly. Your mind is agile and so you need to focus on positive matters rather than needlessly worry.

Taurus

Fiscal affairs continue to occupy your thoughts. Ideas abound on how to boost your personal coffers. Work is busy and you have the opportunity to communicate with colleagues. However, you may also experience some tension if your ideas are risky. Taureans may enjoy time with children this month.

Rejuvenate your skin this winter with HydraFacial™ at Peninsula Dermatology A new technology called HydraFacial™ is making a big splash in the skincare market. Peninsula Dermatology is one of the first practices on the Mornington Peninsula to offer this non-irritating, serum-based skin resurfacing system. With results comparable to more aggressive chemical peels and microdermabrasion – without the discomfort or downtime – patients are finding this new approach to be a refreshing and relaxing alternative. “Hydrafacial has become one of our most popular treatments” says Dr Hugh Roberts, Principal Dermatologist at Peninsula Dermatology. “Prior to embarking on more aggressive surgical or laser treatments, I often recommend to my patients that they try the Hydrafacial system. After a series of 4-6 Hydrafacials combined with quality skincare many of my patients are so impressed with the dramatic improvement in their skin they do not need to progress to these more invasive treatments.” The secret to HydraFacial is a patented spiral tip that can simultaneously exfoliate, clear blocked pores and deliver specially formulated nourishing serums to the skin. These proprietary serums are clinically formulated to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, congested pores, hyper-pigmentation and acne-prone skin. Immediately after treatment there is an instant and noticeable improvement in skin tone, luminosity and texture. Unique to Peninsula Dermatology, all Hydrafacial treatments receive a complimentary Healite II LED phototherapy treatment valued at $50. The addition of the Healite II further enhances the effect of the Hydrafacial treatment. Prices start at $180 for an individual Hydrafacial treatment (plus complimentary Healite II) or $150 per treatment if purchased in a pack of four. Festival remembers

music lover

Haydn Godony Haydn Godony was passionate about the music industry on the Mornington Peninsula. This year the much-loved local photographer and music lover’s legacy will be celebrated at the Mornington Winter Jazz & Blues Festival’s back-to-back Swingin’ Blues Afternoon at Beaches of Mornington on Sunday, June 12. From 3pm, back-to-back blues performers will take to the stage to celebrate everything that is roots, blues and foot stomping good fun and Rob Papp and Blues Head will kick it off in memory and celebration of Haydn. Haydn spent his entire working life promoting local acts and the venues that supported them, creating his iconic Hot Shots section in The Independent Group’s papers. Two generations of locals have been snapped by Haydn. He also wrote and took photos for Mornington Peninsula Magazine from the first issue until he passed away from Leukaemia in October 2014. Haydn loved the Mornington Peninsula and was passionate about the music and entertainment industry. The back-to-back Swingin’ Blues Afternoon at Beaches of Mornington features Rob Papp and Blues Head, The Jackson Four and Sister Sister. The Mornington Winter Jazz & Blues Festival runs from June 10 – 12, tickets and full program at www.morningtonjazz.com.au and updates at www.facebook.com/Morningtonjazz

Australia’s leading jazz vocalist Vince Jones spoke with Mornington Peninsula Magazine ahead of his Mornington Winter Jazz & Blues Festival performance at the Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery on Saturday, June 11: Tell us about ‘One Night Spent’. What can the audience expect? I’ve been playing with this band for many years, many new original songs and non originals. I like to keep the band evolving, so there is a new approach to each song for each performance. Each player in the band is a dynamic soloist and each of them will show their talents to the audience. You’ve played this festival before. What do you love about it? I love that part of the world, the coastal towns of Victoria are alive with creativity. The various venues come alive with the music and the listening audiences while surrounded by the beautiful coastline. Do you feel like a local given you’ve played in this region over so many years? I live in a coastal town south of Sydney so I understand the “feel” of the area.

Photo by Haydn Godony I hope to come back and play the Mornington festival as many times as I can before retirement but then, again musicians never retire. The Mornington Peninsula clearly enjoys you. What do you enjoy about the peninsula? Many of the people who live in the area would be expats from Melbourne and over the years I’ve played thousands of gigs around Melbourne and around Victoria. People would remember the band from the earlier days, when we played every weekend in the city. I am impressed with the way the festival is run and how it has survived when others haven’t. This shows to me that

the area has a love for the arts. Favourite local hangouts ie beaches/ wineries/cafes? I love the weekend market down on the waterfront. I would walk along the edge of the bay and stop at the market and buy some things for the kids and some seeds to plant in my garden. Message to anyone reading this and thinking about going to the festival for the first time? What a wonderful time you will have checking out all the wonderful musicians pouring their hearts out into their music while you can listen and relax with a glass of wine. See you there.

What a ‘Wade’ to enjoy winter jazz and blues! Frankston South’s Jon and Wendy Wade will perform two gigs at the highly anticipated Queens Birthday weekend Mornington Winter Jazz & Blues Festival, June 11-13. The classy duo will perform a selection of modern and older classics from Van Morrison to Billie Holiday, Etta James, Frank Sinatra and many more at the Leaf & Bean Café, 53 Main Street, Mornington on Sunday, June 12, 6pm. Vocals – Wendy and Jon will be on keys/vocals. On Saturday, June 11, at 7pm the Wades will perform with the Australian Hammond Quartet at the Mornington Bowls Club as part of the festival’s After Dark Series, presented by Mornington Peninsula Shire. After Dark is one of the most popular events in the program. The Australian Hammond Quartet line-up includes Jon Wade on keys, Rob Rob Papp on guitar, Peter Hodges on drums and Wendy Wade vocals. Wendy and Jon Wade’s smooth sound has been described as blues inspired swing jazz with strong rhythm influence. They enjoy regular residencies at Dizzy’s Jazz Club in Richmond, Ruby’s Music Room in Bennett’s Lane Melbourne and the Leaf & Bean in Mornington.

East meets west Unique Art Parade and exhibition at Whistlewood New canvases by Indigenous artists of the Eastern Desert’s Utopia region and those from the Western desert art centre of Warlukurlangu at Yuendumu off the Tanami Track, feature in Whistlewood’s Winter Salon + Art Parade on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. “As the theme of the show is the diversity of colour in Aboriginal art, we’ve selected works from these communities as they were groundbreaking in the late 1980s for their use of brilliant colour,’’ says Whistlewood’s co-curator Susan McCulloch, of the Shoreham-based art company McCulloch & McCulloch. She will open the show on the Saturday of the Queen’s Birthday weekend with one of McCulloch & McCulloch’s unique Art Parades, in which more than 80 works are shown by a team of paraders while Ms McCulloch provides insight into the artists, their works and meanings. Alongside canvases by Utopia artists including Emily Pwerle, Barbara Weir, Charmaine Pwerle and Selina Teece Pwerle and those from Yuendumu, is a great variety from around Australia. They include jewel-like landscapes and ‘bush medicine’ paintings from Central Australia, brilliant new paintings from the APY Lands and sweeps of colour by artists of the Pilbara. ‘‘We also have a group called ‘It’s not just black and white’ as there are also some gorgeous new works in soft greys and striking black and whites highlighted by touches of colour.’’ Art Parade: Saturday, June 11, at 2.30pm, places limited and bookings essential online at mccullochandmcculloch.com.au

Let your imagination fly at Frankston Arts Centre

With school holidays coming up and winter setting in, it’s easy for children to spend more time on screens. Frankston Arts Centre (FAC) has several programs to entice children and parents to step away from the virtual and into life.

Whether it’s creating a space fantasy in Hot Arts for Cool Kids, seeing favourite books come to life on stage or being mesmerised by the magic skills of The Amazing Danny, there is something for all children at FAC. The third bestselling book of all time by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, ‘The Little Prince’, has been adapted for the stage in a delightful production. Arriving in Frankston on Tuesday, June 21, for two shows only, children and their parents will be captivated by the adventures of fantastical creatures and mythical destinations. Two performers, puppets and crates of surprises reveal a story that has captured the imaginations

of children for generations. Little ones will also love Hippo! Hippo! - a musical adventure based on the book by Hazel Edwards ‘There’s a Hippopotamus on my roof eating cake’. A story of a little girl and her imaginary friends, this is one joyful performance that is guaranteed to lift your spirits. Young inventors and artists will love creating their space fantasy during the much-loved School Holiday Arts & Craft Program, Hot Arts for Cool Kids. Using their imagination and recyclable materials, children can construct, sew, paint and make whatever they think is out in space. For aspiring magicians, Amazing Danny is the show for you with his great sense of humour and wacky magic skills. For those who believe in fairies, join in with Harmony and Rhapsody as they sing and dance through a high-energy party. DRAMA

During 2015, Art About artists shared with each other their stories and formed marionette puppets with mixed mediums including papier-mache, paint and fabric. Each marionette in the Art About troupe is an expression of the artist’s identity and story. Infused with tales of travel, magic making and dreams of being just like Bond, Supergirl and ABBA, these puppet-objects took on new barrier-free lives of their own. Photographing each marionette for Avenue of Puppets and including the hand of their maker captures, in portraiture, both artist and artwork as one. Avenue of Puppets: Volatile Bodies is on display until June 23 as part of Arts Access Victoria’s public exhibition suite. Art About is a visual arts program for people with a disability on the Mornington Peninsula. Art About meets at the Seawinds Community Hub studio in Rosebud West.

CELEBRATES 5 YEARS “Wow look at this!” is often a remark heard as people walk through the door for the first time at the Brialyn Boathouse Gallery in Frankston. For the last five years, Brian and Lyn Mellady have sourced artwork that you would be proud to have on your walls from over 50 Australian artists. Exhibitions that show a broad range of an artist’s work are held often. At any one time you can also see the wide variety offered and discuss your special requirements. Lyn and Brian are happy to let you see paintings in your own home to ensure that you are satisfied. Paul Margocsy has recently delivered his internationally recognised bird and wildlife paintings that have drawn a steady stream of visitors. For many it is a badge of honour to own his work, for its pure accuracy touched with a sense of humour. Future exhibitions include the bold impressions of Robert Knight, the fine line work of John Young, the coastal seascapes of Lyn Mellady, Gary Laird’s landscapes and the Wildlife Art Society of Australia’s annual exhibition. Beautiful pottery, art books and hand crafted jewellery, or DVDs for artists all make wonderful gifts. Wander in to browse or purchase - you are equally welcome. AUDIENCE GRIPPED BY ‘INTIMATE LETTERS’ The spotlight shone brightly on the Peninsula Community Theatre on May 15 to illuminate Hamer and Friends, hosted by the Peninsula Music Society, performing to a packed house at this accessible venue enhanced by a subtle and gentle lighting backdrop. Opening the program, Rebecca Chan, violin, Stefanie Farrands, viola, and Michael Dahlenburg, cello, played sensuously and vibrantly, with tremendous rhythmic accord. This touch and energy set the tone for the evening, the artists blending together with gripping dynamic beat. Guest artist Zoe Black, violin, followed,

her feeling for the music enhancing a brilliant technical virtuosity. Zoe and partner Joe Chindamo, keyboard, last September made their debut at Carnegie Hall, New York. This day, Mornington was no less enthralled. Where Beethoven’s ‘String Trio Op 9, No 3 in C Minor’ captivated the audience to begin with, the passion of Janacek’s ‘Intimate Letters’ took over to highlight the entertainment. Brahms’ ‘String Quartet No 2 in A Minor’ then lulled the audience, while never forsaking vibrancy and energy. The performers rose as one to a grand finale that brought the house down. BY CATHERINE GODONY

An enthralling program and awe-striking artists - these are the promises of the Peninsula Music Society’s Winter Solstice Festival concerts at the Peninsula Community Theatre on June 17, 18 and 19. Recent Masterclass participants will also be at the concerts. The Peninsula Music Society regularly conducts Masterclasses for young students under the direction of leading musicians - watch out for the next round. June 17 will see the world-renowned Karin Schaupp, on guitar, and cellist Umberto Clerici, with rhythms that will take you from Spain to South America and Brazil. On June 18 the talented Sara McLiver (pictured), soprano, and the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra will steal you away with the spirit and spectacle of Bach’s inspired music. Sunday afternoon’s crescendo on June 19 arrives with world-class virtuoso pianist Kristian Chong. Chong will perform music from Bach to Rachmaninoff and beyond. A Peninsula Chamber Musicians concert will follow at St Peter’s Church Mornington showcasing Mozart, Copland and Greig. Every village needs

a touch

of art!

After 48 years in the old Tuscan castle on Nepean Highway, Mt Eliza, Manyung Gallery has finally moved. Now located right in Mt Eliza Village in a fully renovated space, (Chris Yates old boutique), it is very obvious that the village has a new member.

Bright, colourful and crammed full of great art, Mt Eliza’s newest venture is a welcoming and attractive space that projects very notably into the street. “We have about fifty gallery lights on timers that give the art on display a real presence and cannot be passed by walkers or drivers, without notice . . . that’s exactly what we hoped to achieve on our move”, says David Wemyss-Smith, gallery owner. While the actual space is smaller than the old gallery, there will be always be 120 to 150 artworks available to view. “To support this new venture we have created a ‘Window to the Art Warehouse’ via a large onsite monitor reflecting the artworks available at our newly developed Art Warehouse in Mornington. This is available to visit on appointment and houses over 700

paintings and sculptures.” Manyung Gallery Mt Eliza launched its new space with an exhibition featuring Japanese born painter Maki Horanai on May 21 and plans to run fortnightly exhibitions “so the gallery will be constantly refreshed with exciting new art”, says Sharyn Wemyss-Smith. The next exhibition starts on Saturday, June 4, at noon and will be an interesting mixed show to give local Mt Eliza residents an idea of how broad Manyung’s reach into the Australian art scene is. David and Sharyn would like to welcome all locals who “never quite got around to visiting” their old gallery to call in to the new one, see some great art and discuss their art needs. Sharyn and staff can visit and consult and bring art to homes and offices via Manyung’s mobile gallery so works can be viewed and assessed privately. This is a noobligation and free service. the best of the peninsula, from grassroots origins The Mornington Peninsula is a serious wine region with very dedicated winemakers who strive for continued high quality wine production. Pioneers of the local industry have many stories to tell, many are still running cellar doors and are happy to revisit the early days. It is difficult to imagine what other group of people can actually remember each growing season and relate these to the vintage of wines produced. In the eighties the Mornington Peninsula Vignerons Association was formed by a handful of people who connected and shared their experiences and dreams and learned from each other. Much of what was needed was learned through experimentation, exploration and a commitment by those involved. The association was formed from the grassroots level and has maintained a strong organisation since. New members brought new skills and further developed business models to establish the industry. In 1981 the first Winter Wine Weekend was held. This was an opportunity for everyone to come and see, talk and taste and invite Melbournians to see what had grown on their doorstep. Following this event, which

has been held annually since, on the Queens Birthday long weekend in June, the cellar doors always remain open to allow visitors to experience the region’s beauty throughout the seasons. A great place to come back to time and time again to explore further and make new friends as well as catch up with old favourites! Step into the chamber filled with barrels and terracotta amphorae to taste the widest range of Mornington Peninsula wines. Kevin McCarthy & Kathleen Quealy are recognised as ultra-premium iconoclastic winemakers. Their team has swelled to include the very talented and experienced winemaker Dan Calvert, assistant Tom McCarthy and French trained viticulturist Lucas Blanck. Quealy Pinot Grigio & Pinot Gris needs no introduction as they introduced the variety into Australia all those years ago to great success. Their Pinot Noirs are rich ripe styles; because they manage their own vineyards, each wine is truly distinctive. The animal pair Pobblebonk & Rageous are the rewards of intrepid cellar door visitors. Pobblebonk is a delicious field blend of aromatic white grapes; named after the local frogs who bonk loudest when happily hidden in long clean grass. Quealy manage their Winery Vineyard without any herbicides or hazardous chemicals. Rageous (a mule) is their Sangiovese Shiraz Pinot Noir blend; natural winemaking at its best, each variety complimenting the other. This 2014 vintage smells of black olive, cherry and chocolate. Weekend-long truffle celebration at Max’s Restaurant, Red Hill Estate Truffle Melbourne – a favourite event in Melbourne’s culinary calendar - is back for its third consecutive winter. Already the largest truffle festival outside of Europe, the festival is dedicated to all things truffle, and to “democratising the truffle” by revealing its secrets, satisfying the curious and celebrating the fabulous fungus. NEW IN 2016 Those looking for behind-the-scenes insights showcasing Mornington Peninsula’s best artisan producers working with local truffle are in for plenty of tasty truffle treats on Saturday, July 16, and Sunday, July 17, at Max’s Restaurant, Red Hill Estate. The weekend will be a regional carnival of truffle collaborations showcasing creative local producers. Think truffled vodka made using local truffles, truffled cheese with Red Hill crafted cheese and truffled beer from Red Hill brewery. Lots of other Red Hill produce and truffle tales from the locals can be savoured! Guests can choose two dishes from Max’s tasty Pop Up Truffle Kitchen’s fresh truffle menu, along with a glass of wine to toast your truffle while enjoying all-day entertainment including truffle chef demonstrations, mock truffle dog hunts and Peninsula-made live music. Then graze the Truffle Marketplace and visit Red Hill Estate’s Cellar Door to enjoy the best food and drink Red Hill has to offer. Special truffle experiences on the weekend include a behind-thescenes half day truffle trail or feasting on five-course degustation lunches or dinners created by celebrated chef Max Paganoni in his acclaimed restaurant onsite. Whether it’s a lazy, long lunch, a decadent mid-winter dinner or Sunday brunch, there will be something for every truffle seeker. Making the weekend planning simple for those without a designated driver, MP Experience has organised transport options from Melbourne and a local door to door service around the Peninsula for those making a weekend of it. Accommodation discounts will also be available for ( 84 Everything we love about the peninsula, fresh every month

ticket holders to help make the weekend even easier and more luxurious. And there’s a special Opening Night Party five-course truffle degustation Feast on Friday evening July 15 to kick the weekend off in style! Multi-award-winning Max’s was the first winery restaurant opened in Red Hill over two decades ago and attracts a loyal following who enjoy exceptional wines and expertly crafted dishes in a picturesque setting boasting an unparalleled view over the vineyard and spectacular Westernport Bay, with Phillip Island on the horizon. So it’s a great setting for a weekend-long truffle celebration! Surprisingly, Australia is now the fourth largest truffle producing nation. “The 2016 Victorian truffle harvest could be the state’s best yet. Truffle farmers across the country are reporting that they can already see signs of truffles developing just beneath the earth’s surface,” reports Festival Director and truffle farmer Nigel Wood. “Red Hill Truffles is a successful local producer and Jenny McAuley’s success there has encouraged others to plant ‘truffle trees’ across the Peninsula” he said. “Unlike elsewhere in Australia, Melburnians are so lucky to have productive truffieres (truffle farms) close to the city so people can easily join a real working truffle hunt, and tick that off the bucket list!” Wood added. “For truffle die-hards, this year’s Truffle Melbourne program includes around 20 events, from a special Master-class, to hunts and high end dinners. Another new feature in 2016 is their truffle-finding App to help diners find where truffle is on the menu or where to buy truffle to enjoy at home. The App and simple truffle recipes on video will launch in June,” announced Wood. Sam Keck and the team at Merchant & Maker are stamping their authority on the Mornington Peninsula’s café scene – this new kid on the block has won not one but two awards at the 2016 Best Bites Awards! Merchant & Maker won Café of the Year and the Innovation Award. For a venue that opened its doors in McCrae just six months ago, it’s dream recognition. Sam, 28, admits he was “gobsmacked” and “chuffed” at the same time on awards night, but the successful businessman (he’s also the owner of the popular Commonfolk in Mornington) says his team is passionate about what they do and they do it well. “With Merchant we wanted to give the best cafes in the city a run for their money but we also wanted to make sure locals still had ownership of it,” he explains. Merchant & Maker is a “coffee-focused cafe and bar obsessed with delivering the best breakfast, lunch and dinner the world has ever beheld”, but an award like Café of the Year doesn’t come without a head chef with passion. That’s where Lynsay Heydon comes in. “She’s worked in cafes

and restaurants in the city and on the peninsula and she loves flavours,” Sam explains. The Innovation award is recognition for a business that donates 20 cents from every cup of coffee it sells to charity. Both Commonfolk and Merchant & Maker run Sam’s ‘The Cup That Counts’ initiative, focused on developing a sustainable specialty coffee industry in the developing world. Food, wine and a meandering walk

what a way to experience the peninsula! WORDS & PHOTOS BY ANDREA KELLETT The annual Mornington Peninsula Winery Walk was held under sunny autumn skies on May 7, showcasing local wineries in style during Aussie Wine Month. This one-of-a-kind tour, run by the Mornington Peninsula Vignerons Association, takes food and wine lovers on a meandering walk from Red Hill to Merricks. It is a celebration of the end of harvest and a memorable way to taste peninsula wine and fine food, all while enjoying the outdoors. Now in its fourth year, the Mornington Peninsula Winery Walk has become a sold-out event, with many participants travelling in groups from Melbourne and further afield to take part. “A lot of people who came the first year have come back with their friends,” Mornington Peninsula Vignerons Association executive officer, organiser and event founder Cheryl Lee explains. The 2016 tour started at the Red Hill Market and stopped at Red Hill Epicurean for tastings of Foxey’s Hangout Sparkling White and petit sliders; Paringa Estate for samples of Chardonnay & Pinot Noir by the vines, matched to canapes created by chef Julian Hills; Paradigm Hill Cellar Door for Reisling and Pinot Noir plus cheese from Red Hill Cheese; Merricks General Wine Store for a sumptuous spread on the deck and a variety of Cellar Door tastings; Stonier Wines for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and Lindenderry at Red Hill for hearty soup and bread. This is a truly unique way to explore the peninsula, see some of its fabulous wineries and, of course, enjoy local wine. Full details at www.mpva.com.au

something special with Finesse Catering Group at the helm. They are the wedding, private (to not so private party), corporate or special celebration specialists and can ensure your festivities are full of flavour and fun – no stress! Teaming up with Event and Flavour with Lisa Hemingway – she is the event and they are the flavour – last month, they threw a launch party where guests raved about the food and made bookings on the night – one guest saying “let’s have a party!” His wife enquired, “what for?” “No special occasion other than… eating more of (Chef Roong’s) food”, was the reply. Happy birthday FAC!

The Frankston Arts Centre’s 21st birthday celebrations got into full swing on May 13. Notable guests, who have been integral in the success of the centre, were invited to attend a special celebration prior to the evening theatre performance of Wuthering Heights. With the bar and surrounding area being redeveloped, the centre turned the temporary hoarding surrounding the renovation site into a spectacular ‘birthday wall’ around the bar area, filled with photos and memories. With 21 years of entertainment, thousands of shows and millions of visitors, the memories stretched down one wall and around the corner. The new external artwork The Bonfire by artist Kerrie Warren was also officially unveiled and lit up for the first time. Kerrie recounted that one of her first artistic painting experiences was in her family home in Frankston when she was caught finger painting in one of her father’s newly finished oil paintings. Her love of composition, movement and palette has continued to this day.

Peninsula masterpieces vie for Australian House of the Year Five stunning Mornington Peninsula homes have been shortlisted for The Houses Awards, which celebrate the best in Australian residential design. The 2016 shortlist represents the pinnacle of contemporary architecture from across the country and all shortlisted projects are in with a chance to be awarded ‘Australian House of the Year’. Four Mornington Peninsula projects have made the cut in the prestigious ‘New House over 200 square metres’ category and they are Sorrento Beach House, Sorrento, by AM Architecture; Links Courtyard House, Flinders, by Inarc Architects; Red Hill Stone House, Red Hill, by O’Connor and Houle Architecture and Landscapes; and Split House, Mount Martha, by BKK Architects. Sorrento Beach House has also been shortlisted in the ‘Sustainability’ category, along with Main Ridge House, Main Ridge, by Noxon Giffen. The awards started in 2011 and recognise outstanding work by Australia’s architecture and design professionals. They also provide a fascinating snapshot into contemporary residential design. They are judged by a panel of leading architects and designers and winners will be announced in Sydney on July 22. Summaries of our shortlisted homes are below, more at www.housesawards.com.

NEW HOUSE OVER 200 SQUARE METRES Sorrento Beach House, AM Architecture Sorrento Beach House is a new dwelling located on Victoria’s first settlement site of 1803, known locally as Tideways Beach. The beach house begins as an austere and robust object which relaxes and opens toward the water (Image: Dianna Snape). Links Courtyard House, Flinders, Inarc Architects This holiday home sits between a golf course and a low-key gravel road. A compact and tightly planned home and garden moderate between privacy and shared views. A subtle palette of grey materials rewards the keen observer (Image: Peter Clarke). Red Hill stone house, Red Hill, O’Connor and Houle Architecture and Landscapes This home emerged from the desire of a couple of urban professionals with children for a less intense daily life. The site is on five acres of picturesque farmland. It evokes the rural idyll, close to metropolitan infrastructure. A stone barn is the contemporary setting for living (Image: Earl Carter Photography). Split House, Mount Martha, BKK Architects The house comprises two relatively simple volumes linked by a splayed stair, providing a range of spatial relationships to its site and the broader territory that carefully balance the owners’ desire for privacy and engagement with the surrounds (Image: Peter Bennetts).

SUSTAINABILITY Main Ridge House, Main Ridge, Noxon Giffen Main Ridge ‘Penny’s House’ lies on a site amongst orchards. Blessed with expansive views of rolling hills to the south west, the site is exposed to the seasons and the elements. The robust dwelling nestles into the hillside and has been sculpted to engage with the landscape (Image: Shannon McGrath). Sorrento Beach House, AM Architecture See above category.

Buyers spoilt for choice in face of outer Melbourne growth Buyers are likely to be spoilt for choice in the coming months, with the Real Estate Institute of Victoria predicting Melbourne’s property market is set to experience stronger June sales after a slow start to 2016. For the second consecutive quarter, Melbourne’s median house price has remained relatively stable at $713,000. REIV Chief Executive Officer Enzo Raimondo said the stable median house price and a high number of auctions leading into June represented positive news for buyers. “The moderate market will allow many more owner JUNE 2016 (55)

occupiers, including some families, strong opportunities to get a foothold on the property ladder,” he said. In the first three months of 2016, outer Melbourne proved to be the best performing area of Melbourne. REIV president Geoff White said 12 of the top 20 growth suburbs were in outer Melbourne. “This signals continuing buying demand for homes in the city’s outer suburbs, as homebuyers look for value further from the CBD in the current market,” he said. The REIV’s latest statistics (March quarter) show the median house price is $663,500 in Mornington, $795,000 in Mt Martha, $582,500 in Dromana and $720,000 in McCrae. www.morningtonpeninsulamagazine.com.au

Our Philosophy

“We believe life is too short to spend it on cleaning.”

Cross cleaning off your list today! Most gardeners will tell you their compost is the life source of their garden. For those with an edible gar-den, composting is important for you to maintain the health and fertility of your soils, and therefore nu-trition in your crops. While the primary function of composting is to recycle nutrients in order to return them to our soil to feed our plants, it also helps to reduce the amount of waste going into landfill, thus helping to reduce the impact our households have on the wider environment.

LUCY’S IRONING SERVICE, DROMANA

Many families these days will have a compost bin out the back of the yard in which food scraps, leaves and lawn clippings are housed. Unfortunately often these bins do little to help break down your waste in the short term and serve only as a storage vessel and beacon to small flies and mice. You will find that over time the waste does break down, but it can take many, many months and rots rather than com-posts. While there are many ways to compost, there are three

main composting methods that homeowners can use to recycle their food and garden waste - compost heaps (including bays and bins), worm-farms and liquid manures. Bulk garden waste, spent crops and lawn clippings can go into the traditional compost heap, compost bay or compost bin. It is important though that the compost receives sufficient oxygen to feed the bacterial driving force at the heart of your compost. You need to also ensure that the pile has adequate moisture, is layered well and has a good ratio of dry to wet matter (carbon to nitrogen). It is worth doing some research in order to understand the composting process better to produce optimum results. The easiest way to deal with kitchen food waste is to use a worm-farm. These can be readily purchased from nurseries and hardware stores, though it is easy to make your own using recycled materials such as polystyrene boxes, bathtubs or old rubbish bins. When used well, worm-farms don’t tend to smell as much as the common compost bin. You also get the added benefit of a constant supply of worm juice and worm castings, some of the best natural fertilisers you can get (depending on what you feed them of course). It would also be worth reading

up on alternative kitchen-waste systems such as Bokashi and electric composters (which work very well). And don’t forget that a few backyard chooks are very industrious vegetable and fruit waste recyclers. Weeds can also be composted, but not with your garden waste compost system. We can use weeds sepa-rately to form liquid manures thus retaining the goodness they have drawn from the soil. Old bins work well for this purpose. If you grow comfrey, nettle, nasturtiums or abundant herbs these will all benefit your liquid manure by increasing the range of nutrients and minerals in your solution. Composting needn’t be confined to a single plastic bin in the back corner of your garden. Using a com-bination of systems can provide you with an array of ready to use fertilisers for your food crops by retain-ing many of the nutrients that are coming out of your garden and kitchen.

Happy composting. Drew Cooper, Edible Gardens www.ediblegardens.com.au

Renovate your windows with Roman Blinds Roman Blinds from Dollar Curtains & Blinds have luxurious and ornate pleated folds that are raised fold-by-fold, creating a soft layered look. When lifted they allow you to maximise your views and natural light and when drawn closed they give you complete privacy. Their soft Roman Blinds combine the simplicity of blinds with the warmth and versatility of soft furnishing fabrics. Creating a complete home interior look, you can match and coordinate the fabrics in your Roman Blinds with the fabrics in your curtains, pelmets, swags & tails and cushions. The Perfect Peninsula Place

Peninsula local Andrew Whyte runs a premier Landscape Design studio in Hawthorn and has been designing outdoor spaces, for those with a discerning taste, for over 20 years. Andrew knows how to use the ‘jigsaw pieces’ (ideas from the client) and make them into a whole concept that will delight the senses. Asked what attracts him to the peninsula he explains: “I grew up in Scotland with a love of nature and where better to spend my time than this diverse environment I call home?” With his team of landscape architects and horticulturists, Andrew creates bespoke outdoor spaces that are a contemporary blend of quality materials and plantings. He continues: “I believe the designer’s role is to somewhat counsel the client. You are inviting them to express their inner most thoughts, and in doing so, use those thoughts to create the ideal environment for them to enjoy.” An Andrew Whyte designed landscape is ideal for entertaining and for children to be engaged.
