How girls’ schools are inspiring the next generation to challenge the world They say, “If it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you”, and with Australia’s gender gap ranking falling each year, it has never been more important for educators to inspire young women to challenge the world. Toorak College principal Kristy Kendall believes girls’ schools hold the golden ticket for the next generation of young women to be unapologetic about who they are, be empowered to use their voice and create the change that is necessary. “We do not seek to replicate the world; the world is not an equal place,” Mrs Kendall said. “Instead, we seek to challenge it. We seek to push boundaries and inspire growth in every girl. It is our mission for every girl at Toorak to be confident and bold in their choices and to succeed in whichever field they choose.” Girls’ schools prioritise what is best for girls by focusing on the academic and well-being needs of girls as well as key developmental milestones. Toorak College’s unique Project Shine program exemplifies this. Comprising four distinct approaches – Project Enlighten (Early Learning), Project Ignite (Prep-Year 6), Project Illuminate (Year 7-9) and Project Radiate (Year

10-12) – each stage builds on the previous and ensures every girl gains the courage, skill, belief and determination to thrive. “I am so proud of how our girls support and celebrate each other and their achievements,” Mrs Kendall said. “In what has been a challenging and disrupted year for many, it makes a world of difference for our girls to know that they have an entire community cheering them on.”

Mount Eliza Village brings the world to you! Mount Eliza Village is keen to get moving into a ‘COVID-19 normal’ lifestyle. Those who can are setting up outdoor spaces to welcome people into the special fold that is Mount Eliza Village: a place where community comes first and quality product pervades.

MtElizaVillageMag

The Chamber has been working closely with council to support businesses to spill out into laneways, carparks and on to the grass where possible with the aim of embracing a new outdoor culture. Additional benches will be set up on the Village Green, and traders will have outdoor heating and coverings and COVID-19 safety plans in place (see more on page 26). So why not bring a rug or warm coat to experience the wonderful café, restaurant and retail life that Mount Eliza Village is renowned for. Things may have changed since you last read Mount Eliza Village Magazine, but your village still provides an international lifestyle envied by many. No need to go overseas when you can purchase clothing from Scandinavia, New Zealand or England, shop produce from Italy, or visit Japan, the Middle East or Europe via your tastebuds. In celebration of Mount Eliza’s international atmosphere, the Chamber is launching a loyalty program where shoppers will receive their own passport, which will be stamped after visiting six premises. Shoppers will receive shopping vouchers for their efforts. Look out for the international flags flying to indicate this loyalty program is on in November. The Halloween hunt is happening throughout October, as is the Black Friday sale just after Thanksgiving at the end of November. Sparkling Christmas street decorations will be hanging from the trees in December to welcome all customers back. The Mount Eliza Chamber of Commerce wants to thank all residents for their enduring support of local business in the past six months. It is because of this and your ongoing support in the months ahead that business will stay the course of this pandemic. It will be a long and slow road to business recovery but we can do it. The Chamber also welcomes new investors and residents to the area with wide village-first arms. MOUNT ELIZA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Spooky Spoonville signals Halloween Most of you would have heard about Spoonville. Yes? This ‘stick a glammed-up spoon in the ground’ trend, which has spread across Melbourne like wildfire, has dished up a creative outlet for kids with serious cabin fever. Originating in an English village in Berkshire, Spoonville has scooped out its position as a global crafty craze with endless possibilities. Just take a look at the Village Green in Mount Eliza Village or wander the streets to see what imaginative little minds and busy hands can produce. Natasha and Alex McDonald’s sons Addison and Harris have taken Spoonville to the next level by creating a spooked-up Halloween version. Natasha explains: “We’d noticed that there were different themed versions of Spoonville dotted around Mount Eliza.

10

Issue 46 • Spring-Summer 2020

My six-year-old Addison came to me and suggested we do a Halloween version. I’m not very crafty but the boys have become more so during lockdown. They’ve been doing lots of drawing, beading, making playdough and kites and have been so excited to see new additions to our little Spoonville village. They are usually very active and energetic boys. Creating Halloween Spoonville, which is on the kerb just outside our place, and doing all the other crafty projects has kept them busy and interested while staying at home.” Wooden spoons with monster green faces, purple sparkly spoons with silver hair and Morticia Addams black-haired spoons signal that Halloween is just around the corner. Natasha concludes: “That’s one good thing about Stage 4 restrictions: the boys have had the chance to really use their imaginations.” Spoon-tastic! Ph: 9708 8222

Muso adapts quickly to pandemic pressure Let’s face it: it’s tough being in the arts even when you’re not living through a pandemic. Mount Eliza muso Cam Tapp has “adapted quickly” to COVID-19 restrictions and the benefits have not eluded him. He explains: “What are you going to do? Within a week of lockdown I was live streaming from home every Sunday. I’ll continue doing it until venues reopen too because there’s no other choice. The great thing is I’ve become a part of a music-driven online community and I’ve had the chance to expand my audience and focus on my original music.” Creatives are flexible creatures. Mix this with the urge to express and connect and you’ve got the right ingredients for this singer/songwriter to continue making music at all costs. This guitar-playing, Coldplay-listening muso who has been gigging at venues across Australia for years has also been live streaming from various sites across the Peninsula, including Frankston Arts Centre, throughout the pandemic. Of course, this was before the 5km restrictions. These sessions have been the highlight for

COVID-safe Scout Christmas trees This year Christmas is going to be a little different for everyone. At this stage, who knows what it will look like exactly? Social bubbles and champagne bubbles, masks on big bushy beards, socially distanced carols by candlelight and lots and lots of handwashing are just a few new things we will have to consider besides when to make the Christmas pudding and who’s picking up Aunt Mavis.

Sutton and Wesley Taylor and Ellie and Freya Ford get in some tree-decorating practice ahead of Christmas.

Well, the Scouts are working towards making at least one thing easy this year – the COVID-safe click and collect of your fresh Christmas tree. This year they are selling their trees

each weekend in December from two locations: the hall on the corner of Baden Powell Drive and Humphries Rd, and from Frankston Bunnings. To make it a COVID-safe experience, you can pre-order and pay for your tree online at www.bpp.org.au, and your tree will be patiently waiting for you to pick it up. For a totally hasslefree time of it, the Scouts will also organise the delivery of your tree if you live in South Frankston or Mount Eliza and will even take it away when the festive season’s over. Head to www.bpp.org.au for details. Then it will be over to you to go a little ‘Christmas tree whisperer’ and create a special theme in your home.

Mount Eliza actor hits the global virtual stage

At just 17 years old, Mount Eliza resident Ellie Stafford is representing Australia at the World Monologue Games. She’s placed first at the regionals in the Youth (Main + Sprint) category for Australia and New Zealand in Judge’s Choice, and third in Audience Choice. With theatres and film sets forced to close during the pandemic, more than 3000 actors signed up for the event in its inaugural year – with almost 200 reaching the regional live stream finals and fewer than 70 from 20 countries progressing to the global finals. This means that Ellie has performed the best monologue by a youth in Australia. “I found the whole experience really incredible,” said Ellie. “Watching my piece of acting that I had written make it all the way to the global finals was super rewarding and it has instilled a lot of confidence within myself as an actress.” Ellie admitted to us that she’d always taken centre stage at kindergarten concerts, where she’d sing her little heart out and dance like crazy. Yet she didn’t properly begin acting until she was in Year 5. From there she joined acting classes at Helen O’Grady before moving on to Broadway Academy and taking lead roles in school plays and productions. After realising her passion was for TV and film acting, Ellie moved to Austin Acting Studios, which saw her land roles in three short films, including a lead in the horror short film NYMPH. “I love that when I act I get to be someone else,” said Ellie. “In this whole different world I get to create in my mind away from reality.” The Youth (Main + Sprint) finals will be held on Saturday, October 24, at 9.30pm. Tune in to the live World Monologue Games stream on YouTube or stop by Ellie’s Instagram @elliejstafford for more. Plus make sure to watch her monologue. It’s chilling and raw – all the while captivating the audience. KATE SEARS

Caring for your spine at home One of the most common trends we have seen in our Lotus clients during lockdown is an increase in neck, shoulder and upper back issues. Often this is a result of people, including children schooling from home, spending more time on their computers and other mobile devices. Here are some simple exercises we can do at home to counter the detrimental effects of staring at screens for so long. • Foam roller or rolled-up towel: lie with roller or towel along your spine and let your arms stretch out to the side to open up your chest. Keep knees bent. Foam Roller/Rolled-up towel

Cat/Cow Stretch

• Cat/cow stretch: a great way to get your spine moving when you cannot get out for a walk. On hands and knees, round your spine letting your neck hang and then reverse it. • Superheroes: this strengthens the muscles running along your spine, which helps long-term posture. This is especially good for school-age children spending too long on screens. Lift the opposite arm and leg while lying flat on your stomach for a few seconds. Village gets ready to welcome the great outdoors While we’re all aware of the dangers of reopening too quickly from our Stage 4 lockdown, every sign points to metropolitan Melbourne being able to increasingly relax restrictions as active COVID-19 cases continue to fall and we move into summer. And while everything is still so fluid, we expect that a few of our Mount Eliza Village restaurants and cafes will be taking the opportunity to expand their outdoor eating areas into the parking bays in front of their premises on a temporary basis. Canadian Bay Hotel, Vinnies Restaurant, The Sandbar Café, Palamara Village Fruits and Sheep Station Bakehouse all plan to make use of their parking bays for additional seating space. This is a complex set-up involving multiple council departments. Some businesses will build timber decks across the parking bays, while some will simply use the road surfaces, maybe with artificial turf covering the area. All adjoining roads to these outdoor areas will have traffic-calming measures introduced to slow passing traffic and safety bollards around the seating areas, but the expectation is that the public will be treated to a more outdoor eating vibe surrounded by planter boxes and attractive fencing. However, the majority of the hospitality businesses will simply extend their outdoor seating along the footpaths in front of both their own and also

26

Issue 46 • Spring-Summer 2020

Ph: 9708 8222

neighbouring businesses, providing more seats without going into the parking areas. Much of this depends on the actual location of the businesses and the width of the adjoining footpath. These scenarios will all evolve over the coming months as the indoor seating restrictions change, and the situation will remain incredibly fluid. Market research shows that this pandemic has generated a huge desire among the public to stay local and shop local, and we really hope that this eventuates in a huge local spend over the coming months. It appears that huge numbers of people are exiting the city and moving to the Peninsula, so let’s hope their dollars regenerate many of our small community shopping precincts. Let’s push the importance of shopping local for Christmas – and always remember that if you can’t find the right gift right now, the Chamber sells Mount Eliza Village shopping vouchers that can be redeemed in all Village-based businesses. These are available for purchase through Trish Stamp Travel. However, most local shops would also be more than happy to sell vouchers for their own businesses as well. As soon as we’re able, let’s get back out into the open and support our local businesses. You can be sure they’ll be welcoming us with open arms. MOUNT ELIZA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Investing in good design: why one size doesn’t fit all Good design shouldn’t feel like a luxury, yet our society seems increasingly accepting of mediocrity when it comes to housing. A home is most often the largest and most important investment a person will ever make, so why conform to the narrow selection of ‘off-theshelf’ products mass-produced by volume builders? With the advent of the $25,000 government Homebuilder grant, Graham Jones Design truly believes the right choice of designer will help every client maximise the value of their project – and it all starts now. A good designer has the ability to provide you with a tailor-made design experience, driven by great communication, quality expertise and a genuine desire to bring you the home of your dreams. While volume builders clearly serve a need, their success as a business relies on turning

over clients in bulk quantities. With an experienced but boutique custom designer like Graham Jones Design, the number of projects running at any given time is vastly lower, so a client isn’t just another number in the system but a real person with real wants and needs from their future home. Only with a custom designer will even the most fundamental architectural considerations relating to your individual site and style of home be made – orientation, solar access, wind paths, rainfall – making your home far cheaper, easier, cleaner and more efficient to run for years to come. And only with a custom Ph: 9708 8222

designer can you design a home that caters to your specific needs of living rather than a ‘one size fits all’ model. Taking the time to find the right designer and spending that little bit extra on their services cannot be valued highly enough. The end result of a home depends on the designer at the very start and will truly prove to be your greatest investment when building a new home or renovation. New office marks next chapter in independent publishing Mount Eliza Magazine had its beginnings in 2005 on the kitchen table of publisher Lisa Walton’s home in Mount Eliza. With help from her daughter Yandell Walton, Lisa launched this publication to celebrate everything we love about our village by the sea.

From there, with the support of extraordinary businesses, loyal readers and her partner Archie, Lisa moved the operation to an office in Mornington’s Main St, then to Unit 11 at Mornington Industrial Park at 1140 Nepean Highway. Growing from strength to strength, our ‘other’ publication, Mornington Peninsula Magazine, this year celebrated its 100th issue, which is a pretty significant milestone in these challenging times for independent

media. It has come a long way from its humble beginnings as Mornington Life. Having established Mount Eliza Magazine and Mornington Peninsula Magazine as the Peninsula’s go-to glossy publications, Lisa and Archie launched another publication in 2018 called Eat.Drink Mornington Peninsula. This annual compendium of everything a foodie could desire has been a hit among residents and visitors alike, and it complements the endearing stories of community spirit, inspirational residents and exceptional businesses that its sister magazines highlight. Now, as we head into our 16th year of publishing on the Peninsula, Lisa and her small but dedicated team found they’ve outgrown their MIP office and so have had to move Ph: 9708 8222

again – but this time it’s just a few doors away to more spacious offices at Unit 14. Lisa and Archie, alongside a band of skilled tradespeople, have transformed the space into a bright working environment with fresh paint and carpets, a fully equipped kitchen, warehouse storage, a meeting area, and of course ample room for continued growth. In print, online, and rapidly expanding on social media, Mount Eliza Magazine, Mornington Peninsula Magazine and Eat.Drink have the Peninsula covered. Showcase your brand in our magazines and take up the option of full multi-media publicity when we promote and post your business on our website, Facebook and Instagram. And watch for our new website to be launched later this year. KATE SEARS

Could Mount Eliza be next for single-use plastic-free living? Imagine a world where single-use plastics are nonexistent and reusable vessels are the norm. Waste Wise Mornington Peninsula co-founder and Plastic Free Places program co-ordinator Birte Moliere is keen to see it happen. She explains: “The problem with single-use plastic is that most of it is not recycled and instead ends up in landfill or as litter along our beaches, waterways and eventually in the bay.” Earlier this year Mornington Peninsula Magazine let you know about the national Plastic Free Places program run by Boomerang Alliance. Seventeen Mount Martha venues signed up to this innovative trial designed to eliminate Birte Moliere is keen to expand the Plastic Free Places initiative across the Peninsula, including Mount Eliza.

44

fossil fuel-based plastic packaging, and the result has been remarkable. In just over three months this group of future forward-thinking eco-initiators have collectively eliminated 30,436 single-use plastic takeaway items – and that’s not including plastic bags. The Plastic Free Places initiative is now keen to expand holistically across the Peninsula, and that includes Mount Eliza. So who’s ready to do their bit? Birte continues: “In Australia alone, 2,700,000 disposable coffee cups end up in landfill every day. That’s just one of the items the program is tackling. People were frightened of using reusable coffee cups at the start of the pandemic, but it is completely legal and safe to do so as long as the same hygiene guidelines are followed that apply to all other aspects of running a hospitality business during these times. We’ve just launched an exciting new campaign focusing on bringing back reusable coffee cups. The support we’ve received from both the community and the hospitality sector to date is extraordinary. It’s very encouraging to know that so many people are aware of the impact of single-use plastics and want these items to be phased out.” Check out @WasteWisePeninsula on Facebook and Instagram or head to the new website www. wastewisepeninsula.org to join the campaign and to access a directory of venues that accept BYO cups.

Birte Moliere’s son, Max, is a fan of reusable cups. Issue 46 • Spring-Summer 2020

How do we support those around us?

This year, we are surrounded by people going through all sorts of struggles. The isolated. The elderly. Overwhelmed parents. Children stuck at home. The unemployed. Those separated from their families. So how do we support the different people in our lives? The isolated elderly Prompt them to reflect on something they’re grateful for. Weave humour and nostalgia into your conversation by reliving funny memories or times you’ve shared with them.

Parents juggling work and kids Many parents are at the end of their tether. Juggling many roles at once is a tiring, thankless task. Convey that they’ve got your support. Validate their struggles.

Kids Emphasise that whatever feelings they are experiencing are normal. Share what makes you feel better when you’re down. People who have lost their jobs Job loss resulting from the pandemic is an incredibly stressful experience. Sensitivity and kindness are key.

Focus on their personal strengths and achievements. People separated from their family If someone’s family is not nearby, they’re essentially missing close connections. Turn to your own network and see what you can share with them. Remember, you don’t need an invitation to check in, and try to check in regularly. Tonto and Miku share a cuddle.

Jane and Paul to the rescue

Miku and Tonto are living the dream in Mount Eliza. After starting life in the greyhound racing industry where many dogs’ lives have passed their use-by date by the age of five, both ‘blue’ greyhounds have been rescued by Sea of Love owner/operators Jane Bertram and Paul Clasby. Jane explains: “I’ve never owned a dog before. One Sunday morning I was looking at the Greyhound Adoption Program website and it just happened to be adoption day in Ballarat. Paul and I jumped in the car to find more than 200 people comprising of 80 groups there to vie for only 30 dogs. As soon as I saw Miku I knew she was the one. You weren’t allowed to run when the selection time was announced, so I quickly walked over and said to the handler, ‘I want this girl’. I cried with joy when I saw her. It was very overwhelming. That was three and a half years ago.” Enter Tonto six months later through the same process and you’ve got double trouble. Well not really. Jane continues: “Tonto came from the GAP headquarters in Seymour. He is big and handsome, a cross between Elvis and George Clooney in looks; an easy-going, lovable quirky fellow. Surprisingly, most people don’t realise that greyhounds are a bit like cats. They just love to snooze. They’re not super-active as you would imagine them to be, being racing dogs. They’re pretty lazy and best of all, have beautiful

temperaments. Around here we’re now known as the people with the greyhounds.” Life looks very excellent for these two hounds who love a bush walk along Earimil Creek, eating roast chicken and sardines, and a tummy rub. To Jane’s delight, both dogs’ personalities have unfolded over time as they have adjusted to life outside the confinement of a pen. They are loving pet life. And so they should! She concludes: “Everyone needs a greyhound in their life.” We think she may just be right. Ph: 9708 8222

Supporting blood cancer

Now here’s some great news when there hasn’t been much to celebrate. The My Mount Eliza Run & Fun Festival on Sunday, September 27, was a resounding success. Held as a virtual event this time round, Geoff Nyssen and his supporters got out and about in their My Mount Eliza tops to raise money for the not-for-profit Snowdome Foundation, which is exclusively focused on raising money for blood cancers, including myeloma. The result has been sensational. Geoff explains: “We raised $36,000 the second year we were in operation and set ourselves the goal of reaching $80,000 for one event. I’m really excited to tell you we’ve raised $83,000 with all the support from business and individual participants.” What a result! This great fundraising

event, inspired when Geoff was diagnosed with the terminal blood cancer multiple myeloma in 2014, is usually held in March but was postponed this year because of COVID-19 restrictions. That’s when Geoff and his team embraced the virtual concept, and they couldn’t be happier with the shift. Geoff continues: “One of my sponsors suggested we go virtual, so we made it happen. We had live crosses to Brisbane, Sydney and the Northern Territory. Participants were asked to do anything active for 36 minutes because one person in Australia is diagnosed with a blood cancer in Australia every 36 minutes. People ran or walked for 36 minutes, shot 36 balls through a basketball hoop, all sorts of things. Photos were posted on the My Mount Eliza Facebook page. People signed up to participate in England, France, Israel, Sweden, Netherlands, New Zealand and Thailand. There was almost 900 participants.” Unbelievable. Just goes to show what thinking outside the box can do. Congratulations, Geoff. Here’s to next year’s event however it manifests. MtElizaVillageMag

Welcome to Woodleigh, Natalie McLennan As Term 4 began and we negotiated the new COVID protocols and procedures, our new Head of Senior Campus started her time at Woodleigh School. Natalie McLennan joined Woodleigh’s Leadership Team after 15 years at Mentone Grammar, and she has already had a positive impact in her time at our School. A real ‘people person’, Nat patiently awaited the return of staff and students to our School. Her enthusiasm was overwhelming when our Year 12 students returned for the GAT, and she was very eager to meet them and introduce herself. I know Nat will take every opportunity to be available to staff and students during Term 4 and I’m equally sure she’ll be a regular at the crossing, greeting students each morning. DAVID BAKER – Principal

Excited by Woodleigh After 15 years at Mentone Grammar, I stepped out of my comfort zone. Mentone was my safe place – but it was time to move on, and I am genuinely excited to be part of a community where Respect for Self, Respect for Others and Respect for The Environment underpin everything we stand for. Personalised learning, student agency, a focus on well-being and formative feedback, and the development of lifelong learning capabilities strongly align with my personal educational philosophies. I’m also really enjoying being greeted by the birds each morning, a family of ducks with ducklings and cockatoos singing at the same time every lunchtime – all very different to Mentone! I am passionate about education and excited by Woodleigh’s culture, where positive relationships and learning experiences are acknowledged as being central to the quality of our students’ education.
