Mt Eliza Easter Bunny Hunt Find the 20 shop windows that have the bunny sticker on their window, and list as many business names as possible on the entry form. Submit it into the entry box at either Trish Stamp Travel or Hunter & Minx, before noon on 17th April 2018.
Have you ever wondered why shops close? Or have you ever looked around Mount Eliza Village and wondered why buildings are empty? The reason is simple. Shops are vacated because customers are making choices to go online, buy from bigger complexes or spend elsewhere, which ultimately affects the local economy. So, here’s an idea. How about buying local from a small business with self-employed owners this Mother’s Day. Purchase a stunning gift from one of the fashion or homewares stores, a bunch of flowers from the amazing florist, take home a mouthwatering sweet treat from the local bakers or take Mum to eat with the guys that run the local cafes or restaurants. Try to resist shopping online and spending your hard-earned dollars with multinational companies when you could be supporting local hard-working families who live in the neighbourhood, employ local people and generally offer excellent customer service. These are also typically the businesses who support your local school and sporting clubs. Support real people who are committed to our community.

Just think, if every family in Mount Eliza spent an extra $10 a week in the Village, $48,980 would be generated each week. That’s $2,546, 960 a year. Amazingly achievable numbers considering it’s only an extra $10 a week, right? Surely that makes sense, yes? So, let’s shop local over the next few months and see what we come up with. It’s time to share the love in Mount Eliza and share the benefits.

which are key skills for future generations. The Empower Network creator and Student Futures Specialist Bianca New said a strong professional network would ease the students’ transition into the industry of their choice. “By leveraging the knowledge and experience of our talented alumni, students can feel more confident in their career decisions and create opportunities for work experience, employment and mentoring partnerships,” Mrs New said. Toorak students will also have unlimited access to LinkedIn Learning, an online learning platform that enables students to drive their study in an area of their interest and at their own pace while developing expertise and skills in demand by employers Ph: 9708 8222
now and in the future. “Critical skills that differentiate them from ‘the robots’, such as creativity, critical thinking, lifelong learning and emotional intelligence, are going to ensure our students thrive. LinkedIn Learning enables us to do this,” Mrs New said. Principal Kristy Kendall said these programs would help give the students the courage to make bold choices in their futures. “Toorak College is excited to see how these initiatives help inspire young women to dream big and follow their passions, but also to equip them with the confidence and character to brave the world with the courage to change it,” Mrs Kendall said. The camera just loves Kayden Price. This 11-year-old Mount Eliza boy has been in front of it since he was six months old. Born to an American father and a Mornington Peninsula girl, Kayden’s most recent foray into television is the story-based Westpac Bank ad directed by Academy Award-nominated director Garth Davis. You can see why Ford Modelling Agency took him on at such an early age. His mum Jodi explains: “Kayden was born in Chicago. We came back to Melbourne when he was two years old to be with my family. I grew up in Mount Eliza. When we were in the States he did lots of catalogue and online work. It came so easily for him. He just loves it. I just sit back and watch him do his magic. “He’s signed with a Sydney modelling agency now but really wants to work for Disney and Nickelodeon in America, so it’s time to look for an acting agency too. He’s working with a dialect coach to fine-tune his American accent. It’s funny. He speaks Australian with me and American with his dad, Ron. When he’s not working he’s like any other Grade 6 kid at Mount Eliza Primary School. He loves soccer, swimming, tennis and bike-riding, playing video games and listening to music.” Kayden has worked with Usain Bolt and Sally Pearson for the Coles School for Sports program, been the principal in a Sony/BMG music video and is in the Melbournebased Gangster Dreaming web/TV series currently in production. He’s also modelled for Target, Ross, Michaels, Kohls and JC Penny. Jodi concludes: “It’s been a really positive experience for him and helped develop his confidence. His younger brother, Kian’dre, is also signed with a modelling agency.” Right on, Mr Price.

“Rabbit girl.” That’s what they called her on the street. She’d bring them into her bedroom when they were kits, pop them on her bed and drown in their fluffy bunny beauty. They were always silent as she snuck them inside and there were sometimes up to 17 snuggling on her bed at one time. Unbeknown to her parents. The young Janine Daddo was bunny mad, and if you know anything about her art you probably know that bunnies feature heavily MtElizaVillageMag
whether in her paintings or in her sculptural works. From the days when she used to sell her rabbits for $2 to the kids around the corner and carry her own to a show in a rabbit carry-all, which had been converted from a bird cage, Alice in Wonderland’s main man of adventure with the big ears has always held a soft padded spot in her heart. She explains: “I just love them. You know German people often have bunnies as pets, and when I went to visit some of my German relatives they had massive big rabbits almost the size of dogs. That’s what I’d like. When my dog goes, I’d like to have a studio rabbit
with soft little feet.” In the meantime, Janine will keep on painting her cottontails camouflaged in the garden, their faces peering from within flowers silently as they keep her secrets. She’ll also continue to sculpt her rusted steel “tumble bunnies”, ideal for standing guard in the garden just in case there’s an adventure to be had. Check out Janine’s bunnies on Instagram @ janinedaddo or pop into Manyung Gallery Group in Mount Eliza, Sorrento, Flinders and Malvern to go ask Alice.

BB has Trish’s stamp of approval BY LIZ ROGERS
Did you know there’s a Jack Russell terrier with curtains hanging on the back of his head in the village? Metaphorically, that is. That’s how Trish Stamp’s 12-yearold, bright-as-a-spark, four-legged family member got his name — BB Curtains. Trish, from Trish Stamp Travel, explains: “It’s been shortened to BB, but for some reason he gets lots of other nicknames too. Like Foofy. He spends the days during the week at home alone so goes completely nuts when we come through the front door. He runs around the kitchen bench at 300 miles per hour. He also loves to chase a cricket ball up and down the hall and sit on my legs when I’m watching television. My daughter and grandson live with me and BB sleeps in Charlie’s bed every night.” Personality-plus is how you would describe this ‘soft furnishings’ canine companion. Trish continues: “I’ll grab a glass of wine and walk out the back door with his dinner at the end of the day. He loves chicken necks. One by one he takes them from his bowl on the veranda and into the garden, but he’s pretty happy if he can get some leftover steak too.” Trish has always had dogs. The one before BB was a Jack Russell/fox terrier cross. As part of a breed brimming with energy, BB brings lots of high-octane oomph to the Stamp household. He doesn’t mind digging a bit of a hole beneath the azaleas in the backyard on hot days either. Trish concludes: “He’s fighting fit, and apart from barking at birds and possums he’s not very vocal. He’s a great dog.” Next time you’re in Trish Stamp Travel in Mount Eliza Way, check out the Deb Moroney wire sculpture, pictured, of BB on the counter. No curtains there. Just love. McClelland’s exhibition program focuses on the development of modern sculpture and various forms of spatial practice, and encourages contemporary artists to address challenging issues current in Australia and a global context. The current exhibition Solid Light, which is on until July 14, features the work of Josef Stanislaw Ostoja-Kotkowski. Born in Poland, Ostoja-Kotkowski (1922-1994) moved to Australia in 1949 and became pivotal in the development of Australian experimental and new media art. Pioneering the use of electronics, he made innovations in computer and laser technology, including kinetics and sound, which he applied to visual art, music and theatre. Ph: 9708 8222

The good oil on EVO oil
NOW OPEN
The health benefits of extra virgin olive (EVO) oil are widely known, but did you know that: EVO oil contains on average 75 per cent of monounsaturated fatty acids, which protect against breast cancer. In fact, the composition of the fatty acids contained in EVO oil is very similar to breast milk. EVO oil contains 85 per cent alpha-tocopherol, which is the most important E vitamin and is a powerful antioxidant that is easily absorbed by the body. The bitter flavour of EVO oil is produced by polyphenols, which contrast the free radicals and reduce cellular ageing. At least two tablespoons of EVO oil each day: Helps lower LDL ‘bad’
cholesterol and increase HDL ‘good’ cholesterol. Reduces the risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer.
Helps lower blood pressure and reduces inflammation in the body linked to heart disease, cancers and arthritis. Invisible orthodontic treatment for adults and children Have you always been interested in improving your smile but been put off by the thought of traditional braces? Are you time-poor with the ability to attend frequent appointments difficult?
Now you can straighten your teeth conveniently, virtually invisibly and we can monitor your treatment remotely reducing the frequency of your appointments. The Invisalign system is a virtually invisible orthodontic treatment that uses a series of custom-made removable aligners created for you and only you. These aligners are made of a virtually invisible plastic that you wear over your teeth to gradually move them to the ideal position. Most people won’t even notice you’re wearing them, allowing you to keep your lifestyle during treatment. Treatment with Invisalign is suitable for most cases from mild to moderate complexity. Invisalign aligners look similar to clear retainers, teethwhitening trays, or gum shields. A series of Invisalign aligners are custom-made for you and you will replace each one approximately every two weeks until the final position of your teeth is reached. Advantages of Invisalign: • Virtually invisible • More comfortable with no metal brackets to irritate your gums or the inside of your mouth. • Removable so it’s easier to clean your teeth and maintain your oral health during treatment. • Fewer doctor visits. We can monitor your treatment remotely meaning less frequent dental visits. Call Hanks Orthodontics today on 9787 3849 for a chat about treatment options and what the team can do to help you achieve that smile you have always wanted. With convenient locations in Mount Eliza, Hastings and Rosebud, Hanks Orthodontics makes orthodontic treatment easier.
Get ready for something great. Move towards your best smile. Invisalign® clear aligners have transformed over 4.5 million smiles worldwide with the precision of 0.1 mm at a time, using the world’s most advanced technology. So you can keep moving forward without missing a beat. Stop Waiting. Start Moving.

The Decades collection at Mt Eliza Optical is iconic and timedefining. The style and fashion icons throughout history were often seen sporting these renowned sunglass styles on the covers of Vogue and Vanity Fair. Over the past century, we can remember Jackie O with her oversized 1960s bug-eye sunglasses, or Greta Garbo with her startling white round-eyes. The 1970s disco era had a blast with free-love hippies, including Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and John Lennon, who brought coloured lenses to the world.

service, while the clinic’s up-to-date technology delivers radical results. The Smile Place Mt Eliza is expert in treating a wide range of tooth and gum issues in both adults and kids. It also offers snoring treatments to aid patients who suffer from sleep apnoea. Dr Schertel explains: “Sleep apnoea affects millions of people each year, but because it occurs at night time while you sleep, people can be unaware they are suffering. We regularly screen our patients and we work closely with medical doctors every step of the way. For patients who have been diagnosed with mild to moderate sleep apnoea, a dental device such as a mandibular advancement splint could help. Ph: 9708 8222
It is less cumbersome than a CPAP machine and it works to open the airways by bringing the lower jaw, tongue and associated soft tissue forward, stopping it from collapsing during sleep. It is very important to be fitted for one of these in an accredited dental clinic and to return for regular check-ups as the device may need periodic adjustment.” Make your dental care a priority with The Smile Place Mt Eliza — the smile-making professionals who deliver person-to-person care. “It’s not about glorifying war but honouring those who have fought for our country so you and I can live in peace,” explains Mount Eliza Rotary secretary Ross Schweitzer. We are chatting about the upcoming Anzac Day service, which will be held on Thursday, April 25, in the Howard Parker Reserve next to the Mount Eliza Community Centre in Canadian Bay Rd. Between 200-300 people are expected to turn up. “We’ve still got a couple of World War II veterans attending, plus representatives from South Africa, the UK and New Zealand. It’s a multi-generational event. Babies in prams right through to those who fought in Vietnam and Afghanistan. You should speak with Alex Anderson, who’s been organising it for about 10 years. There were only around 50 people turning up in the beginning. Now the local schools are involved, the police, fire brigade and the ambulance services.” Alex Anderson, pictured, is ex-British Army. He served in the 1st. Battalion The Black Watch and the Coldstream Guards and has been involved with Rotary since 1979. He’s been in Mount Eliza for about 35 years. He explains: “We changed the Anzac service to 2pm so it’s easier for some of the older people to attend. We have two buglers, one from Toorak College and the other from Peninsula Grammar, and some of the students, including those from Mount Eliza Secondary College, read For the Fallen by Laurence Binyon and In Flanders Fields by John McCrae. Then there’s the Peninsula Grammar marching band. The schools have been keen to participate. If the weather’s bad we’ll head into the community centre. There’ll be tea, coffee and biscuits afterwards.” The poem For the Fallen reads: “They went with songs to the battle, they were young.” Bring your young ones this Anzac Day to keep their memory alive. Lest we forget. Ph: 9708 8222 Shop Taste Indulge
Woodleigh School has always been on the leading edge of educational innovation and this year we have taken another step toward ensuring that our educational system is placing students’ needs first and preparing them for their futures, not our past. My own inclination is that no child’s education should be diminished to a single number as a measure of their success. To this end, work needs to be done to reimagine senior secondary pathways so that we are able to celebrate the broader set of skills and talents students develop over their schooling.
who gave their time and expertise to be a part of this exciting forward-thinking discussion. “Only one in four domestic undergraduate students were admitted to courses based on their ATAR in 2016, down from one in three in 2014. This is at odds with the message reinforced by schools, families and the media that the ATAR is everything.” — Mitchell Institute, March 2018 ReimaginED brought this group of educators, entrepreneurs, business and thought leaders into a space that was generative and collaborative. Sessions were set up in order
for all people involved to have a voice and an opportunity to contribute to the future direction. We look forward to this being the start of a change which will result in not just a tweaking of the system but reimagining what education can and should be to best prepare our students for the future. For further information about Woodleigh’s programs, information evenings and campus tours, please visit our website www. woodleigh.school or call the Enrolments Office on 5971 6100. JONATHAN WALTER — Principal
In Term 1, 2019, we created an opportunity for educators from both the government and independent sectors to come together to reimagine a better pathway for senior secondary students. ReimaginED involved more than 80 participants in a generative dialogue punctuated by provocations from a range of local and international experts

Family flair for customer service BY LIZ ROGERS
It’s a family affair at The Tyre Place, where first-class customer service is guaranteed. Andrew, his wife Sandy and their son Jake are friendly, fast and thorough. They also welcome each client with a smile and are dedicated to making sure you feel at home. After all, it can be intimidating for a woman to come into an automotive workshop. Sandy explains: “Some women feel a bit uncomfortable coming into a workshop. I make sure everyone is at ease. You’d be surprised how many dads book their daughters in, and they always ask if I’m going to be here.” The moment you speak with Sandy, who exemplifies what The Tyre Place is all about, you know you’re in safe hands. Scotch & Fillet Free Range Butcher has opened in the newly renovated Eliza Square Shopping Centre, accompanying 12 independent retailers with a shared value of community. We have a long-standing relationship with our grass-fed free-range beef suppliers Scott and Julie Mckay, of Habbies Howe, a family-operated business. Some 1300 runners, walkers, volunteers and spectators came together for the MY Mt Eliza Run and Fun Festival at Mount Eliza Regional Park last month, smashing previous attendance records. The event is a fundraiser for Myeloma Australia and was founded by Mount Eliza resident Geoff Nyssen, who was diagnosed with the terminal blood cancer five years ago. “From my perspective it was an amazing success,” Geoff said. “In the past the most we’ve had registered is about 650 and this year we had 968 register for the run, which is an enormous amount. I think

people are just aware of the event now so it’s on their calendars. It’s not an unknown quantity anymore. They know what they’re going to get and so they’re coming out more and more every year, which is great.” As the festival grows each year, so too does its fundraising ambition. Geoff and the organising committee aimed to raise $80,000 this year to fund two myeloma nurses. While final numbers are still being crunched, the event is on track to meet its target. “It’s a huge amount to raise on the back of what started off a couple of years ago as a little fun run,” Geoff said. “Myeloma nurses

provide great support to people like me, our families and carers, so we just wanted to stretch ourselves and set a target and articulate that target to the community so they could get behind what we’re trying to achieve.” Geoff said the event wouldn’t be possible without the support of sponsors like Ryman Healthcare, which has been the festival’s community partner since its inception. “It’s unreal to have Ryman supporting us. They’re a founding community partner and it really helps us achieve what we’re trying to achieve. It’s fantastic and hugely appreciated.”
