Charlotte walks taller after picking up her Gold Award Year 12 student Charlotte Field is the toast of Peninsula Grammar after winning the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. Charlotte was presented with the award recently at a ceremony in Sydney attended by the Earl of Wessex, Prince Edward. She dedicated more than three years to complete her Bronze, Silver and Gold awards. “Receiving my Gold Award in Sydney was surreal,” Charlotte said. “His Royal Highness, the Earl of Wessex, said that we could all walk a few inches taller after the awards as it was an incredible feat to have undertaken and we should all be so proud.” Charlotte’s five components for the Gold Award included obtaining a skill, doing voluntary work, participating in a physical activity, going on a camp and completing a residential journey. “For my skill I learnt yin-yoga; for my physical I trained and completed the 2018 Melbourne Marathon; my camp was at Phillip Island; I volunteered with St John Ambulance; and my residential journey was my French exchange trip,” she said. “What really motivated me to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards was the great advantages it provides to prepare you for life after school. One of my proudest achievements was being offered a university place on the back of this award.” Charlotte said completing the Bronze, Silver and Gold awards provided her with a massive confidence boost. “I realised that I could do anything I wanted. All I had to do was have a go.” Peninsula Grammar prepares students for life. For more information, visit www.peninsulagrammar.vic.edu.au or call the registrar on 9788 7702.

Playgroup provides ideal transition into early learning Research shows that 90 per cent of brain development occurs before a child reaches Prep. Within the first five years, the brain expands faster than at any other stage of their life. The breadth of your child’s early learning experience is more influential and has more permanent impacts on the brain than at any other point in their education and beyond. Pre-primary education then becomes a critical point of your child’s development. Yet diving into early learning can be tough for a child who has only had social

interactions with other children. For a seamless transition into a new learning environment, playgroup is perfect. At Toorak College’s Little Learners Playgroup, children and their parents work together with other toddlers and adults to establish a sense of belonging. Toorak Playgroup is a one-hour session taught by the head of early learning, providing quality teaching and open-ended experiences. Children are taught how to turn-take, become more spatially aware and respond to the emotions of others. These skills are introduced through intentional social interactions and sensory and motor skill development tasks. Ph: 9708 8222
The experiences are sport-based - playing with soft balls to enhance their motor skills and co-ordination; and performing arts-based - dancing to music, singing and interacting with others. Your child’s interpersonal qualities and their personal growth will be promoted through exposure to other children. Each playgroup learner has a buddy in pre-Prep who joins in part of the session to create friendships with their older peers. Toorak’s pre-Preps have great opportunities through the program to be ‘big kids’, developing basic leadership skills that will stay with them for a lifetime. Manyung Gallery fosters home-grown talent Manyung Gallery is well known for showcasing Mornington Peninsula artists of exceptional creative calibre. Two such creators are semiabstract painter Helen Di Tomasso and landscape artist Stewart Westle, who may have different processes and techniques but land in the same communicative space where expression falls freeform from canvas to viewer. Helen explains: “I’ve been represented by Manyung Gallery for around seven years. Their support has enabled me to continue to do what I love to do — and that is paint. I grew up in Hastings and Mount Eliza riding horses and building

tree houses. My work is very detailed and takes a long time because I begin with washes, then use watercolours and acrylics to layer, then use pencils before painting with oils. I respond to what is around me. I remember returning from India and my work became incredibly colourful and vibrant. It still is.” Stewart continues: “I’ve been with Manyung for around 10 years and have lived on the Peninsula since I was 21. I’m 67 now. My art is about expressing what the bush and landscape means to me. I’m happiest in nature. It gives me both emotional and spiritual sustenance and I love getting my hands dirty. The natural world is my comfort zone. My work is not heavily drafted or processed. It’s organic,
like the landscape. I paint in oils and let the work be my guide. All I have to do is paint and Manyung takes care of the rest.” Find your own slice of home-grown artistic talent at Manyung Gallery Mount Eliza — the gallery that nurtures and celebrates local artists’ work because it’s worth it. In Australia, half of us are not as physically active as we should be and spinal problems are the single biggest cause of disability worldwide. Low back pain can affect all ages, with one in four adults estimated to suffer from back pain in their lives. With this in mind, prevention is always better than cure. Regular exercise, sitting less and seeing a spinal professional such as a chiropractor are vital steps towards looking after your own spinal health.
An important part of moving your body more is enjoying the activity. Lotus recommends that you find one or more types of exercise that you enjoy and do them daily. Need to get active? Twelve years younger in just 12 months Cathy knew she had a complicated problem but most of all she knew she didn’t want “fake-looking” teeth. Dental Care Mt Eliza discovered Cathy’s natural teeth had been broken by excessive clenching and grinding, and the professional staff needed to solve the problem before creating a new smile. With careful planning, including implants, crowns and rebuilding, they developed Cathy’s 12-month dental journey to create her beautiful smile. Cathy was involved every step of the way. Together she and the staff agreed on the best shape, colour and contour to achieve the best possible outcome. Success included a ‘behind-the-scenes’ part of the smile where a plan was formulated to build strong foundations for the bite and a plan to protect against future grinding.

Sessions were set up to rebuild in stages, with Cathy leaving Dental Care Mt Eliza with aesthetic temporaries so her smile was never compromised. Cathy now loves to smile, is much more confident, is now able to eat comfortably, sleep soundly without neck pain and wakes without headaches for the first time in years. Cathy’s friends say she looks 12 years younger, and there is no doubt - the photos say it all. Good nutrition and healthy smiles Good nutrition is not only necessary for general health, it also plays a key role in good oral health. The best way to reduce your risk of disease is to eat healthily, with plenty of fruits and vegetables. Oral health is essential to general health and means more than healthy teeth and the absence of disease — it means the teeth, gums and mouth are healthy, comfortable and functional. Good nutrition and healthy eating promote good oral health. Nutrition from fruits and vegetables helps to reduce gum disease and diminish bleeding gums over time. Soft drinks, fruit juices and foods that are high in sugar are linked to higher levels of cavities because they react with bacteria on the teeth to produce acids that eat away tooth enamel. Besides good oral hygiene, frequency of eating is the most important factor related to dental caries. The more frequent the food intake, the greater the risk for caries because a high frequency of eating encourages the growth of bacteria in the mouth that, in turn, leads to increased acidity in the oral cavity.

The village is renowned for its unique and boutique retail businesses, and the businesses within Ritchies Village Centre continue that high standard, accommodating quality independent retailers and service providers including a Ritchies IGA supermarket that’s packed with specialty products and locally produced foods. Not your typical supermarket, the friendly, helpful staff constantly remind us of the local, community-minded nature of this business. A recent addition to the centre retail mix is the gift shop called To You From Me, which has relocated from the other end of Mount Eliza, bringing an eclectic mix of gifts and homewares into this larger, more central space. Community support and generosity The Mt Eliza Community Bank® Branch of Bendigo Bank hosted the 2019 Mt Eliza Community Pitch in August. The event brings together local businesses, community groups and clubs with an aim to support our local organisations with some much-needed extra funding. This was the annual event’s second year. Thirteen businesses (including Bendigo Bank) and two generous individuals donated to a $40,000 pool of sponsorship funds available on the night. Nine local community groups gave short presentations about their organisations and pitched their case for extra funding. All went home with considerable sums of money to support their fantastic local community work.
Bendigo Bank’s Community Bank® branches are in business to return the profits they make to the communities they are part of. The Community Pitch is how the Mt Eliza branch does it. This year they contributed $20,000 to the funding pool. “Our ability to return large amounts of money to our community comes down to people choosing to bank at the Mt Eliza branch. It’s all made possible by our local customers,” says Branch Manager Fiona Parsons. Drop into Mt Eliza Community Bank® Branch in Ritchies Village to find out more. bendigobank.com.au

Dentist or day spa? There are two groups of people who don’t visit dentists. First, there are those with anxiety, and second, there are those who think that everything’s fine because there’s no pain. But just because you don’t feel any pain doesn’t mean there isn’t anything wrong.
Your teeth require a check-up just like your car needs a service. A regular dental examination including the taking of X-rays, and a professional scale and polish to remove surface stains can improve your dental health and possibly avoid costly future treatment. Do you want your kids to experience an activity that gets them outdoors and teaches them some great life skills while also being a huge amount of fun? Ever thought about trying sailing? Davey’s Bay Yacht Club’s annual Tackers sailing program begins on November 10 and runs each Sunday morning until December 15. The program has every level covered from beginner up and is for anyone aged eight to 18, with equipment and accredited coaches provided. Kids will learn how to handle a boat safely in a fun environment where new friendships are formed. A bonus for the adults is the club’s beautiful setting, with a deck overlooking the bay and the club’s own Galley Café/Bar at your disposal. It’s a superb spot to enjoy a spring Sunday morning. And if you want to try sailing for yourself, the club runs learn-to-sail programs for adults when demand allows. It also holds club sailing most Sunday afternoons from October through to April. Sailing is one of the few sports that all ages can do together. For those who end up joining DBYC as members, the club provides a great location for entertaining and enjoying the beach with storage, barbecue, kitchen and bathroom facilities. DBYC’s fleet comprises Optimists, Lasers, Pacers, 420s and Flying Fifteens and members also enjoy kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding. The club also hosts a range of social events - such as its 110th birthday party in January - and regattas, including the 2020 State MtElizaVillageMag

Expand your child’s future at Mount Eliza House Mount Eliza House Sanctuary of Early Learning has built a secure connection with the community over many years, with second generations now returning to be part of its family. With expansive natural outdoor play spaces, children are provided with multiple opportunities to engage in learning experiences, develop friendships and explore their world. Mount Eliza House has also extended its passion and experience to its new sister centre, Frankston House in leafy Frankston South. This brand new service also provides locals with a registered kindergarten, amazing light-filled play spaces and plenty of specially designed nooks to explore outdoors. Both services are proud, actively involved members of the community and the children benefit from this with many outings to form relationships with others and discover their surroundings. This is achieved through regular visits to nearby retirement homes for intergenerational music sessions, and by exploring the region’s diverse reserves, parks and beaches. Parent engagement is welcomed with open arms and many parents contribute to Mount Eliza House’s rich programs, including language classes and literature philosophy sessions. Mount Eliza House and Frankston House are devoted to building warm, trusting relationships with the children to scaffold their learning and encourage independence and life skills. With an open door policy, both services welcome you to come and take a look at how the centres are providing such an enriching environment to expand your little one’s future. Siobhan Whyte, from Trish Stamp Travel, has a five-year-old pedigree boxer dog and boy, is he gorgeous! This magnificent canine, who sleeps in the master bedroom on his own bed, has an even temperament and just loves his human ‘brother’ Paraic, pictured, who joined the Whyte clan last November. Siobhan explains: “Jackson is such a beautiful dog and has embraced Paraic wholeheartedly. The two of them share a very special bond. We did quite a bit of research on reputable breeders before getting him and were delighted when we found a breeder in Thornbury who came with great credentials. Jackson competed in the Royal Melbourne Dog Show in 2014 and won Best Puppy, and he also came runner-up to his sister in the Best of Breed category.” Always ready for a jaunt to the beach and a run in one of the many dog parks on the Peninsula, Jackson’s favourite squeaky toys get a serious workout at home while he’s hanging out with the family and enjoying a liver treat or two. Siobhan continues: “I’m sure as Paraic grows older the two of them will have many adventures and get up to a lot of mischief in the years to come. They will be great friends.” And that’s all anyone really needs, isn’t it — a great companion. Photo by Katie Toland Photography

Hidden gems of the Peninsula One is tucked away at the end of a suburban court in Frankston South; the other, down a long driveway on a rural Peninsula road. Though they may initially seem hidden, once explored, visitors to both of Woodleigh’s junior campuses, Minimbah and Penbank, find environments where all students are encouraged to reach their full potential. A broad and enriching range of programs encourage students to develop an inquiring mind, initiative, independence, character and personality. Both Minimbah and Penbank are purposely small. This is done in the belief that sound education can only take place in an environment where every individual feels known, valued and respected. It is this environment that encourages students to engage in learning with increased enthusiasm and confidence. Being known by students other than those in your immediate cohort encourages a school-wide culture of cross-age interaction between students. This sees strong mentoring relationships develop between younger and older students, particularly those who share passions and interests. Multiple touchpoints with teachers across the camps, activities, sports, arts and homestead programs — not just teaching and learning — means Woodleigh School staff interact with students in a variety of settings and contexts. In this environment, all students are able to be seen as successful learners and positive contributors to school life. Woodleigh, while being an academically rigorous and high-achieving environment, does not limit excellence or success to the academic or sporting realms. All students are able to succeed in their learning and leave school with the skills and capabilities to find success in their chosen path beyond Woodleigh. Deborah Maxwell-Wright is a modern woman. With almost half a century of nursing behind her, two marriages, three daughters and six grandchildren, this Mount Eliza resident has lived a life of caring for others and has loved every moment of it. She’s been there at the end of patients’ lives and supported their families through thick and thin, and she’s paced the wards of Sydney’s Prince of Wales Hospital when psychological support for sex-change patients was practically non-existent. She’s also fractured and crushed her fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth vertebrae. She

explains: “That was in 2001. I fell down a concrete staircase at work but was back on the job within six weeks. I was 16 years old when I became a nurse. It was a real calling back then. I grew up in Strathmore, went to St Columba’s College in Essendon and did my nursing training at the Sacred Heart Hospital built by the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart — now called the John Fawkner Private Hospital — in Coburg. You did your preliminary training for six weeks and then you were thrown right into it and had to learn very quickly. You were put in charge at the end of first year and had to sink or swim.” With 49 years of nursing under her belt, Deborah is now looking forward Ph: 9708 8222
to spending more time with her family and friends, but she’s got plenty of fond memories and community-minded projects to keep her occupied. And her advice for nurses just starting out? “Just focus on one patient at a time. Try to be a good and caring nurse. I know I have done my best to be the best nurse I can be. It hasn’t always been easy, but it’s been wonderful.” Now that’s what I call modern. are committed to their cause to #HelpGeoffTo80 and aim to raise $80,000 next year for the Snowdome Foundation, which funds groundbreaking medical research, clinical trials and personalised therapies for the treatment of blood cancers. Geoff said: “We continue to be so well supported by our generous sponsors, the local community and supporters farther afield. In 2020, we will introduce a 12km running event to challenge even the best of our runners. When you combine that with all of the fabulous entertainment, family-fun activities, delicious food and beverages, it promises to be awesome.” To support the festival, contact Geoff at geoffnyssen@ mymounteliza.org.au or phone 0423 838 374 for a sponsorship prospectus. Rob Licciardo, of Licciardos Railway Bar and Grill fame, has just landed back on the Mornington Peninsula after participating in the ITU World Triathlon Grand Final Series on August 31 in Lausanne, Switzerland, and he’s thrilled with the results. We spoke with him a week after he returned to find out a bit about the trip. With more than 20 years of triathlon experience behind him, this muchloved Mount Eliza chef/restaurateur has always had extra energy to spare and doesn’t appear to be slowing down. Rob explains: “I’ve always been very active. I’ve participated in four world titles and came sixth in my age group - 60-64 - in the Gold Coast Triathlon Series. I’ve also participated in multiple state triathlon titles. Lausanne was a strength course. The weather was amazing, the Alps were beautiful and we rode around Lake Geneva. It was a great event. I’m pretty pleased with coming in 20th out of 120 participants in my age group.” For those of you who know nothing about triathlon, it’s basically an activity that combines swimming, cycling and running in the one event. Athletes in the Olympics swim 1500m, ride 40km and run 10km. Rob took part in a 750m swim, 20km cycle and a 5km run. Rob also went to London and worked with restaurateur
David Moore in his restaurant Pied à Terre in London’s West End for a day and visited friends in Cornwall. He concludes: “Restaurant life is incredibly busy and keeps you on your toes. It’s an endurance test in itself. I run nearly every day and cycle three days a week. My triathlon coach Steve Foster and conditioning trainer Ron Smith have been fantastic. I just love to move and representing my country is a bonus.” Cheers to that, Rob. Congratulations!

no administration fees. You will also benefit from one of the lowest deferred management fees in the retirement sector, capped at 20 per cent. With input from its residents, Ryman creates seasonal menus with delicious meals made fresh on site by its in-house chefs. In every care room, Ryman’s custom-made electronic care app, myRyman, enables individualised care at the touch of a button. Ryman has emergency generators at every village, which provide power to the serviced apartments, aged-care centres and village centres to keep residents and staff safe and comfortable. Ph: 9708 8222
There is a range of care options to suit your needs. Ryman offers independent living and assisted living in a serviced apartment. It also provides residential aged care — also known as low care and high care — and specialist dementia care.
