Mount Eliza’s effervescent reality TV star Gamble Breaux continues to surprise and delight with her many and varied talents. This firm favourite from the international smash hit series The Real Housewives of Melbourne has quietly launched her own product range called The Seaside Collection and released a single titled This Time, with Taxiride’s Jason Singh.

Gamble Breaux has teamed up with Taxiride’s Jason Singh on her debut single, This Time.

A rising singing star before the age of 20, Gamble stepped away from the microphone at a young age after she started to lose her hearing and consequently her pitch. It was devastating. “When I was a young woman, my life’s direction took a massive detour. My singing career was going well. I was a signed singer/songwriter with Warner Chapel Music. I had plenty of studio time under my belt and I wasn’t even 20 yet. It came as quite a shock when I started losing my hearing. It was due to otosclerosis,” she revealed on her website. “Although I had surgery to fix the condition, I never trusted my hearing until now. If you can’t hear, you can’t pitch. It broke my heart.” In an interview with Mornington Peninsula Magazine, this bubbly ‘Melbourne housewife’ described by producers as “quirky” and one who “definitely marches to the beat of her own drum” said producing and releasing This Time was a dream come true. “I didn’t sing for 20 years,’’ Gamble said. “Rick (her husband, Dr Rick Wolfe) was always encouraging me to get up and he bought me these incredible hearing aids that elevated my hearing to a bionic level.” So, with her confidence restored, she spent a year learning how to sing again. And she did it right here on the Peninsula, in secret. “I would sneak out once a week to meet up with Carolyn Waddell,” Gamble explained. “There’s really good talent on the Mornington Peninsula.” Her debut performance at Melbourne’s Athenaeum Theatre in February was for an audience of one - Rick, for their anniversary. Gamble stepped on to the stage and sang This Time. “I cry almost every time I try to sing it,” she said. “It has given me new life. Jason Singh and Lukether Batterbury are the most brilliant producers.” Gamble’s first single and accompanying video clip have rocketed up the music charts and she has already recorded a second single, yet to be released. “I’ve put down the vocals to it,” she said. “The second one is even better.” As for whether we will see her on the next season of The Real Housewives of Melbourne, Gamble is understandably coy. “It depends if I’m invited back,” she declares, explaining she is prevented from discussing upcoming productions. When it comes to life on the Peninsula, this pocket rocket couldn’t be happier. “The Mornington Peninsula is the most beautiful place on the planet in summer,” she says, revealing she takes a break here in January and finds it hard to get her motor running again. This Time with Jason Singh is available on iTunes, Spotify and YouTube download it and boost Gamble’s single into Australia’s top 40! *The Seaside Collection is a collection of fabulous things Gamble has found while shopping for her wardrobe. She launched it privately without RHOMelbourne fanfare. View The Seaside Collection and find links to This Time at gamblebreaux.com

Jordan joins The Babes Project Toorak leading the way in STEM She’s used to being in the spotlight as a model, advocate and wife to AFL player Gary Ablett Jr and now Jordan Ablett is using her profile to help empower pregnant women and new mums. Jordan, who grew up on the Peninsula, has become an ambassador for The Babes Project and it was fittingly announced on International Women’s Day. She will help shine a spotlight on the importance of support for pregnant women and new mums, many of them in Frankston and surrounding areas. It’s a natural progression for the former school youth worker, teacher’s aide and support person for students with different abilities. The Babes Project is a Croydon-based not-for-profit crisis pregnancy support service that is heavily active in Frankston and the Peninsula. In 2016, founder and managing director Helen Parker and her team opened the doors to the Frankston Pregnancy Support Centre at 9 O’Grady Ave. Jordan, who now lives in Geelong after her husband was traded back to the Cats from the Gold Coast Suns last year, hopes to be able to help change lives for the better. “I’m so excited to be entrusted with such an amazing responsibility. I absolutely love the heart behind The Babes Project and I can see the genuine love and passion that the team has for the mamas they work with every day.” Jordan first heard about The Babes Project last year when she volunteered to fill a Christmas gift box for a new mother as part of the annual Christmas Love Appeal. Founded and operated by mothers for mothers, The Babes Project delivers free perinatal care at its pregnancy support centres in Croydon and Frankston. Trained staff and volunteers provide emotional support, parenting advice, essential baby supplies and connections to other health services in a safe and nurturing environment. More at thebabesproject.com Jordan Ablett is on Instagram @jordan_ablett.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics - known as STEM - is everywhere. It shapes our everyday lives and is critical to jobs in the future. It is estimated that in the next decade 75 per cent of jobs in the fastest-growing industries will require skills in STEM. To ensure the experiences and needs of women are represented in studies and in the design of products and services, it is essential that we inspire more women to participate in STEM. A recent study by Monash University found that girls in single-sex schools are more likely to study chemistry, advanced mathematics and physics when compared to their co-ed counterparts. Recognising this, Toorak College is leading the way with its new and innovative

Science and Technology Centre. Construction of the Centre will begin this month, featuring six biology, physics and chemistry super laboratories, a DIGI zone for coding and engineering, open learning areas and University-style lecture facilities, an entrepreneur pop-up space, collaborative learning spaces and an outside science courtyard and laboratory. Last month the School welcomed Sir Gustav Nossal and Professor Anne Kelso as special guest speakers at the Science and Technology Centre Gala Evening. “It was an honour and a privilege to have Sir Gustav Nossal join us,” says Principal Mrs Kristy Kendall. “His keynote speech celebrated four Australian superstars of STEM - Professor Suzanne Cory, Professor Fiona Stanley, Professor Michelle Simmons and Professor Elizabeth Blackburn. I couldn’t help but be inspired by his stories of female success and his plea to us as educators to focus on the fun of Science. “We know our new Science and Technology Centre will shine a spotlight on scientific thinking, ensuring our students are equipped with the essential skills and knowledge to be ready for a lifetime of experimentation and understanding.” Toorak College is proud that so many graduates have gone on to become Professors, Research Fellows, Engineers, Scientists, IT Specialists and Mathematicians. Join us for Year 5, 2019 A full range of musical options are on offer at Woodleigh’s Junior Campuses Minimbah and Penbank.

Year 5 is an exciting time to join us at Woodleigh School. With a second stream of students starting at our Minimbah and Penbank campuses, classes move into the Year 5/6 Homesteads with new zeal and energy for learning. On the outside, our Homesteads are beautifully designed buildings; purpose built, collaborative learning spaces. But the heart of Homestead is community. A community of students who are empowered to step up, to lead by example and thrive in their development as confident, insightful, and compassionate young people. We express our trust and confidence in students through the responsibilities we give them. Year 5 and 6 students are guided and encouraged to develop skills that allow them to monitor, manage and direct their own learning. Students engage in a diverse program of activities designed to educate them about the world in which they live and how they can make a positive contribution to their community. At Woodleigh, students discover and follow passions, grow in a culture of mutual respect, cultural freedom and

inclusion. And they have fun along the way! From Canberra to Beswick in the NT, Wilsons Prom to Sweetwater Creek, Woodleigh students enjoy all the benefits of exploring in nature together, embedding friendships and taking time out to reflect on and appreciate the little things. Woodleigh students come together for cross-campus activities; whole-school musicals, cultural days, festivals, sports, excursions, peer-teaching activities and lessons spent in the Wildlife Reserve. Students get to know their way around each campus, meet other teachers, experience the environment at the Senior Campus, and ignite their excitement for the years of learning that lie ahead. By the time students arrive for their first day of Year 7, they are confident and comfortable. With a smooth transition and academic continuity, they are ready to hit the ground running. Dedicated barely skims the surface when describing this 30-year-old Rosebud Paralympian. Heath Davidson doesn’t stop and won’t stop. He’s training six days a week, and we’re sure he’d sneak in a Sunday session if he could - a training session, that is. There’s no alcohol in sight now he’s in full training mode after winning the quad wheelchair doubles final with his tennis partner, friend and mentor Dylan Alcott at the 2018 Australian Open. “I celebrated with friends for a few days,” says Heath. “There were a few cheeky beers, but now I’m back to training again.” The next goal? Well it’s “goals” – plural. There are a few competitions in the US before he heads to the Korean Open, then Japan and the European tour for the World Team Cup in the Netherlands. “Dylan and I won it two years ago, and we can’t wait to do Australia proud by winning it again. But Wimbledon is the big one. It will be an honour to wear all white for the first time. I just have to keep training hard and get results.” Heath played as a junior for four years from the age of 14 before taking time off to “enjoy my 20s”. He returned to the sport to win gold at the 2016 Rio Paralympics and took out the 2016 ITF World Team Cup in Tokyo with Dylan. “I didn’t know if I’d be good enough to go back to it. Ultimately, I was

scared to go back and fail – but I finally took the chance and the results have spoken for themselves.” Heath has also developed a passion for motivational speaking, inspiring those with disabilities to get into sport – something he felt was lacking when he was a junior. “Knowing that I can help someone, that’s awesome. I kind of say, ‘If I

can do it, well, so can you’.” Taking part in a show-and-tell for wheelchair-bound schoolboy Sonny, 6, and his classmates was something Heath described as an honour. “I want to normalise disabilities, and if it gets him happy then I’m more than happy to do it.” What a champ!

Ms Hawkins helped Australia to victory in the 1983 Netball World Cup and coached England to the 2011 World Cup before taking the reins of the New Zealand franchise for three years in the ANZ Championship. She is a member of the International Netball Federation Coaching Advisory Panel and was appointed Netball Australia’s first

high-performance manager in 1999. “My aim is to create a challenging, inclusive, professional highperformance program, one that will motivate our players and coaches to be better tomorrow than they were today,” she said of her new role. “It is critical that this program has a balance between performance, recovery loading and fun. I am teacher trained so am thrilled to be returning to school to work with the students at Peninsula Grammar.” Principal Stuart Johnston said Ms

Hawkins’ appointment clearly demonstrates the school’s commitment to a first-class sports program. “We know that the best coaches get the most out of their players, and Ms Hawkins’ career to date shows her dedication both professionally and personally to her team members drives them to excel.” Peninsula Grammar’s Director of Sport, Shona Middleton, said Ms Hawkins would be an invaluable addition to the school’s elite development coaching team.

A 20-year friendship between Helen James, of Frankston, and Lisa Schefman, of Langwarrin, has blossomed into an Instagram account and blog called Mama loves to share. They talk to Kate Sears. What inspired you guys to start @mamalovestoshare? HELEN: We were pregnant with our first children at the same time, so we would constantly text each other with questions, comments, funny stories, things we were worried or unsure about. We always joked that we should start a blog so other people could read about how crazy our lives were too. It took a couple of years but by the time our second babies were born we were ready to take the plunge. Why do you think people resonate with what you post? LISA: We are very different people. She’s cool, calm and collected and I’m none of those things. I’m anxious, crazy and neurotic. People can relate to both of us. HELEN: From day dot, we have always kept our blog

100 per cent real. We don’t have time to perfectly edit our photos or filter our words - although sometimes we probably should. We just literally brain dump what is going on in our minds that day, the good, the bad and the ugly. I think mums appreciate that, they can relate to what we are saying and they can have a laugh with us knowing they’re not alone in this exhausting world of motherhood. We also try and give back to our followers - we share recipes, tips and tricks when it comes to kids, local attractions, ideas for family outings. What’s the best part about the blog? HELEN: Well, aside from working with your best friend every day, for me it has to be reading the messages we get from other mums when a particular blog or post resonates with them. Running a blog is hard work. It’s self-funded, long hours, but when we read that we have helped someone with one of our tips, or even just given them a laugh knowing there are other mums going through the same stuff as them, it makes it all worth it knowing that not only are we having fun, we are also helping others at the same time. What do you love most about where you live? HELEN: Frankston has such amazing facilities for families to utilise - the parks and gardens, beaches, swimming pools, playgrounds, cafes, and restaurants. The best thing is everything is only a few minutes’ drive away and most of the places we love visiting are free so you can always pop somewhere spontaneously. LISA: We’ve lived here our whole lives; what’s not to love? Frankston is always evolving, it has everything we need right here and it’s smack bang in the middle of the

First she gave us Wombat - the Mornington Peninsula’s first 100 per cent vegan café and store in Dromana. Now Rebecca Ettridge has opened an animal rescue sanctuary and she’s using proceeds from her landmark cruelty-free business to fund it. When customers tuck into anything from the menu at Wombat Café & Store, they are helping save animals from death row. It’s a unique, feel-good vibe around here. Rebecca’s 32ha sanctuary in regional Victoria is called Plumfield Farm. A couple of years ago, walking her rescue lamb Albie and three dogs past a vacant shop front on Boundary Rd, wondering what was to come, this café owner who, along with her mother, Shelle Hepburn, founded and later sold Wild Yam Health Food Store in Mordialloc, was inspired. “People really connected with Albie in the park, and as a vegan I thought to myself I want to have even more of an impact. I decided to create the Peninsula’s first vegan café - against the advice of many of my friends. People said the Peninsula wasn’t ready for it and said Dromana was the wrong location, especially Boundary Rd where you’re off the main road and away from the highway action.” So Rebecca did what she does best - she took the wellmeaning advice on board and went against it. “I love being told that I can’t or shouldn’t do something,” she smiled. Now well into her second year, Rebecca employs an allvegan team of 11 and Wombat Café & Store is thriving. She stumbled on the “dream” farm last year amid the chaos of building the new business and went for it. She has 34 sheep and a family of cows, pigs, horses and chickens, all given a second chance at life. Rebecca has also contributed to a ground-breaking new animal rights documentary, released last month, titled Dominion. “I think this is going to be a game changer in terms of animal rights. People watch footage of animal cruelty and think it’s happening elsewhere, but this is Australian footage.” And, to set the record straight, the business name Wombat has nothing to do with the animal. “Wombat is actually the name of my favourite mountain bike trail, which is right across the road.” For more on Plumfield Farm, check out Wombat Cafe on Instagram. There’s now a second 100 per cent vegan cafe on the Mornington Peninsula with a third due to open shortly. It seems the wave has begun.

A CHAT WITH MACEY WEHNER BY YAZMINE LOMAX

Macey Wehner is an up-and-coming Tyabb-based jewellery designer. Though trained in urban Melbourne, Macey creates stunning silver pieces inspired by the natural environment of Frankston and the Peninsula. Where did your passion for design begin? Being creative has always been a passion of mine. As I grew older and explored different hands-on classes during my school years, it became apparent that my strengths and skills lay somewhere in the design field. I’ve always enjoyed creating things that are a little left of centre, controversial, and strange. Do you see a difference between city style and Peninsula style? To me, the Peninsula holds an organic element which is captured in art, landscapes, architecture and, of course, jewellery. ‘Simplicity’, ‘coarse’, ‘edgy’, ‘texture’ and ‘natural’ are a few words I would use to describe Peninsula jewellery. Melbourne holds pieces with sleek lines, thickness, angles and boldness, much like the environment in which they’re created, but what city style is to me could be interpreted completely differently by someone else. Why do you love where you live and how does it inspire your work? Growing up on the Peninsula has been a large influence on my jewellery making. Going to local markets such as Frankston, Mornington and Rosebud was a family outing I always looked forward to. Now this has come full circle and I get to enjoy it as a stall-holder. The soft edge of a wave hitting the shore, the unevenness of life, the rawness of emotions, and the boldness in a personality can all be seen and experienced in my jewellery and how I design my pieces. To some this may be hard to understand, but I try to put a little piece of myself and my environment in every jewellery piece I make.

The Arthurs Seat Eagle has taken bronze in the New Tourism Business category at the 2017 Australian Tourism Awards. The popular Peninsula tourist attraction automatically qualified for February’s awards after winning gold at last November’s Victorian Tourism Awards, and its latest success has delighted chief executive Chris Kearney, who attended the national awards ceremony in Perth. “We are very proud of receiving the bronze award amongst such impressive competition,” Chris said. “Winning this award places the Eagle amongst the top attractions in the country and gives us a great base to develop further. SARAH ELSHAUG

In Conversation Casual chats with Peninsula people BY LIZ ROGERS

Maitland Street Interiors owner Sarah Elshaug spent her weekends and holidays riding horses on her parents’ 22ha farm in Balnarring as a kid. Fast-forward to present day and this interior design creative continues the tradition with her own daughters. Oh, and there’s some chatting with cows too! Here’s a snapshot. The Elsie & Hugo collection of limited photographic prints is so cute. How and when was the idea conceived? I’ve always had a passion for nature and love being surrounded by animals. Through my work in interiors I get to create beautiful internal environments for my clients. It was a natural progression for me to use photography to bring these two loves together. Any problems getting your subjects smiling for the camera? How long did the shoot go on for? It took a lot of patience. I spent an entire afternoon in the paddock that day but loved every minute of it. The cows were content and not bothered with me getting up close for the perfect angle. What do you love so much about cows? They have their own unique character traits and individuality in their markings and body shape. They also have very gentle, soft eyes and cute fluffy ears. Their ability to ‘talk’ to each other is also very sweet. Where can readers get their hands on these gorgeous interior style statements? We’re excited to have Elsie + Hugo ranged exclusively by The Interiors Assembly. All Elsie + Hugo prints are limited editions and available to purchase in three sizes at theinteriorsassembly.com.au/collections/ elsie-hugo.

( 24

What’s next on the photographic agenda? More animals? Following the success of the portraits of Elsie, Hugo, Molly and Levi, I’ll be releasing a new series featuring other cows from the herd and this season’s new calves. Mum and Dad’s alpacas Cecil and Cedric may make an appearance too. What was your favourite thing to do as a child in Balnarring? We grew up riding horses and eventing with Hastings Pony Club until we were 21, competing at the PCAV State Championships and Royal Melbourne Show. My first job as a teenager was at Marmaduke’s Deli in Balnarring and I learnt to drive bumping around the paddocks in Dad’s old Holden Commodore. We spent endless summers swimming at Merricks Beach or Mills Beach in Mornington. All of it was great. Describe an ideal weekend away with your own children at the farm. I’m happiest at the farm with my own girls (Jessica, 9, and Ebony, 6) and spending time with Mum and Dad and my brother and his family. The girls have taken up my love of horse riding. They enjoy bonfires after a day moving and feeding the cows, riding on the quad bike and making cubbies in the hay. In summer we spend hours on the beach fossicking for shells and sea glass and then pop in to see Jill at the Red Hill Baker in Balnarring for a treat. We love visiting the Enchanted Maze, Main Ridge Dairy and Sunny Ridge Strawberry Farm. Favourite thing to do or place to go on the Peninsula? We put on our walking shoes on the weekend and adventure along the Red Hill Rail Trail from the Station Ground Recreation Reserve up along the ridge to Red Hill. Then a coffee at the Epicurean café before returning back down the trail. It’s perfect for viewing the Peninsula’s rolling hills, the sea and breathing in the fresh country air.

WORDS BY ANDREA KELLETT; PHOTOS BY TANYA FRY

Sixty years ago the Rosebud community gathered on Jetty Rd to watch World Chief Guide Lady Baden-Powell open the Rosebud Girl Guide Hall. It was, by all accounts, a significant celebration. Earlier this year - on Sunday, February 25 - the community gathered at the same location, this time to mark the diamond jubilee of this iconic building. On a prominent double block at the corner of Jetty Rd and Morgan St, it is one of only a few Girl Guide halls in the country not on council-owned land. Both the land and building are owned by the Girl Guides Association of Victoria and Rosebud is home to one of the longestrunning Girl Guide units in Australia - it was registered in 1931. At the 60th anniversary, current and past Girl Guides, Leaders, dignitaries and others gathered to celebrate a significant part of Rosebud’s history. This world-wide movement, which exists to build confident, self-respecting, responsible community members, is as fresh today as it was when the hall was opened. Mornington Peninsula Girl Guides volunteer district manager and Seawinds Community Hub chief executive Heather Barton explains: “In essence, yes, it’s as fresh today as it ever was and that’s because it’s girl-driven. If the girls aren’t involved in designing and implementing the program then the units generally don’t survive.” It is also about values. “Parents are looking for something that’s values-driven and that’s what we’ve always stood for. Girl Guides sets girls up for life,” Ms Barton says. Those who gathered at the reunion and high tea heard how Lady Baden-Powell visited Rosebud on November 26, 1958, to open the building during a visit from the UK. “On the Saturday when I was setting up I put the DVD of the opening on and burst into tears because you could see these people carrying children in calipers, obviously with polio,” Ms Barton says. “They were placing them on groundsheets at the front of the hall where the opening was to take place so the children could be part of it. You don’t realise how far we’ve come in such a short time. It’s really quite something.” When organisers put word out about the planned reunion, the “jungle drums” led them to the daughter of Eddie Brady, who helped plan and build the hall. To Ms Barton’s delight, Maureen Marshall (nee Brady) accepted an invitation to speak and to help cut the anniversary cake. APRIL 2018 (77)

The hall is, Ms Barton explains, now heritage listed and continues to be used almost daily by Guides as well as other community groups. Endless fundraising has been held over the years to pay for its ongoing maintenance. “Over the past 60 years, a great many people have been involved in getting the hall established and in continuing to operate it as a community resource. This celebration gave us an opportunity to acknowledge the support of the whole community and thank those involved.” Rosebud Girl Guides currently has three units – ages 5-7, 7-11 (juniors) and 11-14 (seniors). The programs include outdoor education, environmental education, leadership, service, craft and more. “Parents want their daughters to broaden their horizons in a safe environment,” Ms Barton says. Girl Guides Victoria is connected globally to more than 10 million members in 150 countries through Girl Guides Australia, which is a member of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. Mount Eliza celebrates safer school trips The Mount Eliza Primary School community is celebrating after winning a long battle to improve safety around school pick-up and drop-off times. Families are now able to safely drop off and collect their children thanks to a new asphalt carpark on Canadian Bay Rd, with space for at least 40 vehicles. The Federal Government invested $280,000 in the project and Mornington Peninsula Shire contributed $70,000. It’s a development that Room to Move steering committee chairwoman Claire Sullivan described as a reminder “not to underestimate our individual capacity to create change for the better”. “For decades, parents at Mount Eliza Primary School have complained about the congestion,” Ms Sullivan said. “A school newsletter from June 1972 refers to the problem at the time. A number of problems have confounded the chaos

that has occurred during drop-off and pick-up times. These issues include the fact that the school remains uncapped and unzoned. It is a school where an 80km/h, six-lane highway was not originally intended to be later built around it.” The carpark was opened on March 2. “During the election campaign, (Dunkley federal Liberal MP) Chris Crewther was the only candidate who took the time to listen and understand the issue of concern,” Ms Sullivan said. “With his pledge of funds at the time, and the support of his voters, the local parent community have come to benefit from his tireless efforts to see this venture come to fruition.” Mornington state Liberal MP David Morris described the carpark as a significant win for the school community. “This carpark is vital for the safety of drivers, parents and students of the schools in Mount Eliza, in particular Mount Eliza Primary School,” Mr Morris said. “It will also ease congestion on Nepean Highway during school pick-up and drop-off times.”

Crappy cars,

commendable cause BY KATE SEARS A lemon. A rust bucket. A pile of junk. And more than 150 other similarly rundown shitboxes will be hitting the road on May 19 from Brisbane to hopefully finish in Darwin on May 25 for the Shitbox Rally 2018, raising money for cancer research. Representing the Mornington Peninsula and Frankston City for the 3800km trip is Team Funsize - electrician Josh Carlson, plumber Sam Tyson and their $250 Hyundai Excel. When - not if - your shitbox breaks down, it’s up to your team and your buddy group of six other teams to rally together to fix it. If that’s an impossible feat, the volunteer support crews with qualified mechanics will help you attempt to get your car over the line. Cars that make it are auctioned off, with all the money going to the Cancer Council.

“The rally isn’t actually a race; rather, it’s a challenge to achieve the unthinkable,” said Sam. “Sam does a lot of four-wheel driving and we both do a lot of trips into the bush to trail bike ride and four-wheel drive,” said Josh. “But I think it will be a bit different in a 2WD hatchback Hyundai.” Since the first event in 2010, the Shitbox Rally has raised $11.9 million for cancer research. Sam and Josh would love to raise $10,000 to add to the 2018 tally. You can follow their progress on Instagram @team.funsize or donate or become a sponsor by visiting donate18.shitboxrally. com.au/fun-size

No one does customer service in the tyre and automotive industry quite like The Tyre Place in Mornington. The team members at this boutique business put the personal touch into everything they do. That’s because this is a genuine family-owned and operated business! Andrew, wife Sandy and their son Jake work together at The Tyre Place. Theirs is a friendly approach where customers are put at ease and welcomed with a smile when they arrive for a car service or a tyre change. Sandy’s friendly approach in the front

office is a hit with female clients and with parents. “It can be quite intimidating for women to come into a workshop,” she explains. “We get a lot of dads booking their daughters in and a lot of them ask if I’m going to be here when they come in.” Andrew, Sandy and Jake greet their regulars by name and take time to discuss their automotive needs. It’s the personal touch that can make a smaller player stand out from the crowd. The Tyre Place covers all your tyre and automotive needs, including routine services, mechanical repairs, suspension, batteries, wheels, brakes and more. Here’s a secret - and we bet you won’t be able to keep it hush hush. Frankston Nature Conservation Reserve is a beautiful 98ha nature reserve just three minutes’ drive from the Frankston CBD, and with three walking tracks it’s ideal for a nice leisurely stroll, a jog, cycle, photography session or even just a chance to reconnect with nature. This little hidden gem in Frankston South has now been fully opened for the first time in 97 years for everybody to appreciate. It’s the ideal escape for quiet recreational activities and to discover the enormous variety of wildlife in the area. It’s home to more than 300 species of native plants and animals, including growling grass frogs, echidnas, bluetongue lizards and blue-billed ducks. In keeping with the objective of protecting the reserve’s conservation values, public facilities including toilets, rubbish bins and barbecues are not provided. Given this, dogs, paddling, swimming and fishing also aren’t permitted in the reserve. However, it’s open 365 days a year and boasts 24-hour pedestrian access from multiple access points, and vehicles can enter the carpark via an automatic gate seven days a week during daylight hours. So why not set up a picnic next to the billabong and settle back with a good book - you’ll be in heaven. Frankston Nature Conservation Reserve is at Jeremy Way (off Lawson Ave) in Frankston South. It’s family first at Pier 10 Restaurant and Cellar Door in Shoreham. Stuart and Renee Baker have just welcomed their second daughter into their family’s fold and life’s taken an even busier turn. Nights are short with a newborn, a twoyear-old and a successful business to run, but these two Mornington Peninsula residents are taking it in their sleepdeprived stride. Sure, the hours may muddle and the days be hard to track, but welcoming baby Zoe Prue Baker has been a joy. Renee explains. “She was born on January 30. I was lucky - the labour was short, and I had a natural delivery. Things can become tricky with two little ones when you’re on your own. Stuart has been great. He’s been spending more time at home, although Zoe and Mia – her sister – are so well behaved while he is around. The trouble starts when he’s not

there,” she laughs. The Bakers met 12 years ago while Renee was singing at Pier 10. They’ve been married for five. Renee is an instrumentals teacher (voice) and loves singing nursery rhymes to the girls. Little Zoe is up every two or three hours for a feed. “Yep, this ‘no sleep’ thing is unusual,” says Stuart. “But she’s beautiful. There’s three of them now (Renee, Mia and Zoe). I haven’t got a chance!” he laughs. Mornington Peninsula Magazine would like to congratulate the Bakers on the new addition to their family. If you’re looking for a place where loved ones can get together and unwind, head on down to Shoreham’s Pier 10 Restaurant and Cellar Door, where the food, wine and outdoor ambience spells extended relations. It’s the perfect spot for all kinds of celebrations. Cheers!

Cornwall to Victoria by fishing lugger When seven Cornish fishermen decided to try their luck during the Victorian gold rush, the first idea for raising the money for fares was to sell their boat - a fishing lugger called the Mystery. The captain, however, had another idea - sail it all the way to Victoria. Departing from Cornwall on November 18, 1854, the fishermen sailed the 21,900km to Melbourne, arriving on March 14, 1855. None of them found a fortune and five returned home, but the other two settled here. A replica named the Spirit of Mystery was built in 2008, and an adventurer called Pete Goss sailed her over the same route. Skippered by Pete and crewed by his brother Andy, his brother-in-law Mark Maidment and his 14-yearold son Eliot, the Spirit of Mystery left Cornwall on October 20, 2008, and arrived at Melbourne on March 9, 2009. A fortnight was spent in Cape Town, which meant the Spirit of Mystery was a little more than a week longer at sea than the Mystery. Pete described 15m waves with crests passing every 18

seconds. The voyage was delayed after Mark had one of his legs badly broken when the lugger was struck by a huge wave south of Kangaroo Island, and the vessel made for Portland so he could be taken to hospital. The replica was rigged in the same way as the original, and although an engine was fitted, it was used on the voyage only to take Mark into Portland. Navigation was by the sun and stars, but a satellite tracking device made it possible for the progress of the Spirit of Mystery to be followed on the internet. An interesting YouTube video provides some idea of the huge waves encountered and shows views of the accommodation below decks. More information and photographs can be found on the internet. Aerial is a tabby cat who hit the jackpot when she came to stay with Mornington’s Davina Currie. Davina owns and operates the dramatically different exercise hub Pole & Aerial Divas, and the notorious Aerial, who likes to perch with her paws on the front desk and survey the scene like a meerkat, seems to be in for the long haul. Davina explains. “She did wander off at the beginning of last November and everyone was in tears because we thought we’d

lost her for ever. My clients love her. As soon as they come in for a session they ask, ‘Where’s Aerial?’ I tell them she’ll be out in a minute – like she’s making some huge entrance. Sometimes she hides in between the roller door and the curtain where she’s warm and cosy in winter. Other times she’s flat out on the front desk staring through the window while she waits for the next person to come in. She likes to disappear and then at other times she likes to make sure she’s seen. She’s such a diva.” One of Davina’s students found the tortoiseshell tabby and brought her into class. The rest is history. Davina is in and out of the

Premium Dog Grooming Boutique

Pole & Aerial Divas’ studio (where she runs 32 classes) from 9.30am every day except Sundays to check on her feline baby. She also drops by on Sundays just in case the cat’s searching for some company. Davina still has no idea where Aerial disappeared to last November, but she does remember when she came back. She continues. “Our students were in the middle of presenting their showcase and she just walked back in out of nowhere. She was different. Before she went away, she wasn’t very affectionate. Since her return, she follows me everywhere and loves a cuddle. She loves the music and I’ve caught her trying to jump up the poles - but they’re too slippery for her.” If you’re looking to put the fun back into exercising in a space where cats and divas rule, drop by Pole & Aerial Divas to meet Aerial and Davina. Michael Robertson has been playing the bagpipes since he was seven, and at 73 there’s no sign of him stopping. “As soon as I started playing I was hooked,” Michael says. “Nothing else would distract me. My father was a talented musician and encouraged our whole family to take up a musical instrument. To entertain ourselves in the simpler times we’d all sit around the radio and play our instruments together or attend concerts.” Practising for at least two hours a day, Michael joined The

Rats of Tobruk Memorial Pipe Band in Melbourne, the youngest of its 24 members. Performing every weekend became the norm as the band graced such events as the Royal Melbourne Show and the Good Friday Appeal and performed at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl and various competitions. “It was a lot of work but I can look back now and tell you that it was a wonderful part of my life. We all knew each other so well, and the seniors would look out for me and even pick me up for the events. I tell my students that you can never master the bagpipes. It’s a very challenging

instrument. You either like them or hate them.” Michael keeps his skills sharp by practising regularly and playing at weddings, funerals and events. He even got the privilege of leading the Hastings branch of the RSL during the 2017 Anzac Day march in Hastings. He’s played for charity and inspired his students in Lakes Entrance so much that they began their own band. You can catch Michael at this year’s Dawn Service at the Crib Point Cenotaph. “Playing on Anzac Day always sends a shiver up my spine. It makes me realise how fortunate we are right now here in Australia.”

Full STEAM ahead at Dromana College Dromana College students are enjoying a unique experience in STEAM education thanks to the provision of state-of-the-art digital and systems technology in the newly refurbished technology centre. STEAM is an interdisciplinary approach to learning that removes the traditional barriers separating the five disciplines of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. When these fields are brought together, more meaningful learning can take place. STEAM integrates these subjects into real-world learning experiences. Since 2015, students have participated in an annual STEAM Immersion Day where they undertake workshops with scientists, designers, innovators and artists and work collaboratively to produce innovative designed solutions. They also take part in the weekly STEAM Club, use 3D printers and laser cutters, and are involved in the annual HPV (HumanPowered Vehicle) Challenge. They attend various science programs both inside and outside the school, including interacting with zoologists, zookeepers and their animals while learning about biodiversity and conservation;

using modern gene technology in a specialist scientific laboratory setting at Melbourne’s Gene Technology Access Centre; and using technology to monitor ecosystems on the Peninsula. STEAM students are also given the opportunity to attend a space camp in the US, spending 13 days touring and working in NASA space facilities, learning leadership and teamwork skills, flying space shuttle simulators and scuba diving at the Advanced Space Academy. They also spend time living and training as an astronaut pilot or mission specialist with students from all over the world at the US Space and Rocket Center in Alabama, and visit the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida, having lunch with an astronaut and seeing the space shuttle Atlantis and Apollo Saturn V rocket. They go behind the scenes at the Epcot and Magic Kingdom theme parks and MGM Hollywood Studios at Disneyworld and learn about the properties of motion physics and the evolution of technology through Disney’s Youth Education Series (Y.E.S) science programs.

Facial rejuvenation with cosmetic acupuncture BY LIZ ROGERS

The luxury Wellness Retreat at Woodman Estate (pictured left) now offers cosmetic acupuncture as part of an already impressive list of sensational spa treatments to have you looking and feeling your beautiful best. Doctor of Chinese medicine Stephanie Burke offers a natural, gentle alternative to some of the other cosmetic treatments on the market with outstanding results - and there’s no downtime, red-raw skin or puffiness associated with the procedure. Working to revitalise and invigorate your skin from within, Stephanie uses the best quality Japanese round tipped fine needles to target areas of the face. This is a pain-free beauty solution that softens, lifts and firms the skin by activating the meridians and ch’i (energy flow or life force) to reveal your inner glow. Motor points are targeted in the facial muscles to relax tight muscles and instruct loose muscles to tighten up to lift and tone. Collagen and elastin production is encouraged to soften

lines and increase density to areas of the face that have lost volume. Nutrient-rich blood circulation is activated to oxygenate the facial tissue and skin. Combine all these things and you have a facial rejuvenation system that over time reinvigorates tired, dull or acne-scarred skin. An initial cosmetic acupuncture consultation with Stephanie includes a skin assessment, facial acupuncture and body acupuncture treatment for 90 minutes. Return appointments will continue to restore and renew your skin and maintain its optimum condition from within. The Woodman Estate Wellness Retreat offers a wide range of stress-relieving massage, facial and body/skin revitalisation packages. Cosmetic acupuncture cements this premium wellness retreat’s capabilities to deliver all things beauty to Peninsula people. Call today to reactivate your skin and to enjoy some well-deserved beauty-based escape. Relax – your own sanctuary awaits! Balance and flow with Rising Moon Tai chi is the most widely practised martial art in the world, its popularity stemming from its many benefits, some of which include improved muscle strength, balance, flexibility and coordination. Studies have also shown that practising tai chi can lower blood pressure, while it promotes effective breathing and a diverse range of movement. Apart from these physical benefits, tai chi can also improve cognitive function, sleep patterns and social interaction with others. The soft, circular movements of tai chi strengthen all parts of the body. The slow, deep breathing stimulates energy flow and promotes focus and stillness. Everyday living becomes less problematic and a sense of balance and acceptance slowly develops to encompass all aspects of daily life. The largest tai chi school on the Peninsula, Rising Moon Tai Chi, runs a variety of

classes in Mount Martha, Mornington, Moorooduc and Merricks, suitable for those just beginning their tai chi journey through to the more experienced tai chi practitioner. Classes include Tai Chi for Arthritis, Beijing 24, Qigong and Shibashi, 32 Sword and Tai Chi for Cognitive Function. Each class focuses on the physical and cognitive benefits of this ancient form of exercise. Classes are highly individual, and they are suited to all levels of ability and experience. It is never too late to start learning tai chi and one is never too old. New students are always welcome. There is a strong sense of camaraderie within each class and all students enjoy learning in a productive and stress-free environment. Tess Dempster already had an impressive resume in fashion before starting her own fashion label, Tess Alexandra, at 25. This Peninsula resident studied Bachelor of Fashion and Graphic Design at the Australian Academy of Design and interned for many local and international designers and stylists in Melbourne while she was studying. She also worked as a design assistant for a prominent Australian fashion company for three years, during which she got to travel to LA and London and work closely alongside the creative director, and her garments have featured in multiple runway shows and events and were showcased at last month’s premium fashion trade event, the Melbourne Retail Festival. Tess launched Tess Alexandra in 2017, her signature designs encapsulating sensibility and sophistication and specialising predominantly in event playsuits and jumpsuits. In that short time, Tess Alexandra has become known for combining elements of sophisticated playfulness, innovation and elegance using unique detailing, exquisite craftsmanship and textured fabrications, with a touch of surrealism that comes from Tess’s belief in the beauty of the female form. Remaining uniquely feminine, Tess Alexandra focuses on merging both classic and modern shapes with intricate detailing. Experimenting with fabric techniques has resulted in the creation of a harmonious juxtaposition, with Tess being heavily inspired by the beauty in building textures from fabric. Tess Alexandra offers a full range of women’s ready to wear and made to order pieces. Tess brings an understanding and appreciation to women’s wear with her passion and aspiration toward blending art and design that defines her personal sense of style. So what can we expect next from this innovative and highly regarded young designer? “A completely new look inspired by my own representation of the latest overseas trends; some very exciting new shapes, introducing a mix of new colours and internationally sourced fabrications.” We can’t wait!

Become the very best version of you A non-surgical guide to treatments delivering results, not promises, from your clinic -Advanced Skin & Laser, continuing to deliver outstanding visible results. First, Dermapen, also known as microneedling. Do not mistake for dermal roller. Microneedling, using an electric pen containing micro-fine sterile, disposable needles, is a paramedical treatment for triggering your skin’s own healing process, giving you younger-looking skin by stimulating your collagen. Excellent for acne scarring. Advanced Skin & Laser first includes low-density IPL facial rejuvenation using topical anaesetic, followed by microneedling with infusion of stem cells. Outstanding? Yes. Costly? No. Compare our prices and be pleasantly surprised. Second, dermal fillers are often mistaken as being the same as anti-wrinkle injections. Despite both being used in facial rejuvenation, dermal fillers contain a molecule to provide volume and contouring with lifting, lasting from nine to 24 months. Anti-wrinkle injections contain a natural, purified protein made from bacteria in the laboratory, similar to the way penicillin is made from mould. These injections relax muscles which cause wrinkles, lasting two to four months.

There has been lots of discussion around the role of gut bacteria (aka the microbiome) in weight management along with immunity and the development of chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and even certain cancers. So how do you nourish your gut to grow good gut bugs?

the diversity of the gut microbiome. These good gut bacteria are essential for the production of vitamin K and also short-chain fatty acids which nourish our colon cells and can reduce the risk of certain cancers. At Be Fit Food, we will never compromise on the ingredients in our food and we believe it is essential to have as many plant-based foods in your diet as possible each day. We include a minimum of four to 12 vegetables in every meal to ensure your gut bacteria is well nourished and flourishes to increase the chance of successful, long-term weight management. Use the code ‘microbiome20’ in-store or online for $20 off your next order (expires May 1).

Include pre-biotic foods daily – pre-biotic foods include those with loads of dietary fibre and specifically onion, garlic, leeks, asparagus, oats, barley, apples, cocoa, flax seeds and bananas. Pre-biotic foods encourage the growth of a healthy gut microbiome. Avoid antibiotics unless essential (under the guidance of your GP) – in the past, antibiotics were used more freely in the treatment/management of many infections given their risk was presumed to be low but unfortunately now it is believed that antibiotic treatment in childhood and adolescence can result in permanent damage to the gut microbiome. Variety is key – choosing a diet with a wide variety of plant-based foods is the most important thing you can do to increase

Free Event

Mental Health Expo 2018 Hastings Community Hub 1973 Frankston Flinders Rd, Hastings

Free expo on mental illness and the NDIS One in five Australians will experience a mental illness at some stage of their life, but finding out about the support services available to them can often prove difficult. That’s where the Frankston/Peninsula Mental Health Expo 2018 can help. First held in 2015, this free annual community expo is an invaluable source of information about all aspects of mental health. The number of people attending has more than doubled in the past three years, and its value is reflected in their comments: “Wonderful support and opportunity to acquire help needed for all”; “It is often difficult to seek or accept help. This is an excellent, warm & friendly forum to do so”; “I found there were a number of services out there that I did not know about”; “Inspiring, courageous, beautifully presented”. The effects of mental illness such as depression, anxiety or substance abuse disorders can have an impact on all areas of a person’s life, from employment to relationships to everyday functioning. Including families and carers in the “recovery” process - in decisions and actions regarding planning, setting goals, treatment methods and so on - generally produces a better, longer term outcome for people with mental illness. The expo will give them appropriate information about support services that might be helpful to their needs and situation. The expo will also answer all your questions regarding the NDIS - what it is, whether you’re eligible, and how you can apply. The expo is on Friday, April 20, from 10am-2pm at Hastings Community Hub, 1973 Frankston-Flinders Rd, Hastings. The free entry includes food and giveaways. APRIL 2018 (77)

your april stars by Stephanie Johnson

Aries: April is a mixed bag for Rams.

On the one hand it is all systems go, eyes firmly on your future goals. On the other hand, wounded healer Chiron enters your Sign calling on you to reflect on and heal any physical ailments or emotional wounds from the past.

Taurus:

Your ruling planet Venus has moved into your Zodiac Sign, heralding a boost in personal finances and matters of the heart. This is a positive month for any activity that increases your income and furthers your romantic interests. Listen to your intuition and this can be a very fortunate month.

Gemini:

Your ruling planet Mercury is Retrograde for the first half of April and so you are cautioned to think before you speak and act. Large purchases, big decisions and important communications require reflection rather than rash action. Around April 15 you understand why there has been a need for restraint.

Cancer: April sees you keen to move

ahead with an important life plan or career goal. However, you may also feel that something or someone is blocking your path. It is time to look at the big picture. What is your true north? In other words, what gives you meaning and purpose?

Leo: April is the ideal time for Leos to

explore new frontiers. The Sun, Mercury and Uranus are all in the 9th House of your Solar Chart, indicating big ideas and broader horizons. You are unlikely to sweat the details now. Anything that invites more adventure is likely to appeal.

Virgo: Your ruling planet Mercury

is Retrograde, indicating that the start of the month is a time for reflection rather than action. In particular you are contemplating how you invest your time, energy and money. As the middle of the month passes, you are likely to make some profound changes based on your deliberations.

( 62

Libra: Two lucky planets – Jupiter and

Venus – are in the financial sectors of your Solar Chart this month. Therefore your personal finances are likely to flourish and you may also receive a gift or news of an inheritance. Other planets are aligned in the relationship zone calling on you to consider your marital status. Duty calls this month. Something is playing on your mind and won’t go away. It may be connected to your relationship with a sibling, or with a neighbour. Whatever it is, the planets are aligned in a way that suggests you have a serious decision to make. Routine may bring comfort. Fun on a budget is the name of the game during April for Archers. You can loosen the reins on your playful side but only so far. This maybe frustrating so be creative. Perhaps you have a creative project that needs your concentration. The trick is to find inexpensive ways to amuse yourself. Three planets line up in your Zodiac Sign this month, calling on you to consider security matters. Capricorns are usually experts on security, perhaps erring on the side of too much control. Nevertheless you are asked to double check any insecure area of your life. It is time to act with integrity. Your connections with neighbours and siblings are highlighted now. This also includes your neighbourhood. You are likely to voice your opinions, perhaps on behalf of other people. Your views may stir up unexpected responses. Politics comes in all shapes and sizes, ranging from local to global. Local politics is the flavour of your month. Friendships have been a recent theme for Pisceans and this month is no different. The time has come for you to seriously consider your connection with your surrounding community. Do your friends support you? The trick is to ensure that your self-esteem is strong and to have connections that uphold your hopes, dreams and wishes.

THE BUSINESS Bianca Appleford established the Light Up Autism Foundation, was named Frankston’s 2017 Citizen of the Year and was given the honour of taking part in the Queen’s Baton Relay in February. Mornington Peninsula Magazine’s Kate Sears talks to Bianca about her projects and passion. Tell us a little background behind the reason for establishing the foundation. The idea was to ensure the brightest possible future and total inclusion of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder in mainstream schools by providing professional support and care. It is important for teachers to have strategies to effectively engage all students with equity in the learning process. What does the foundation do?

In collaboration with the child’s school, the foundation funds and facilitates individualised Applied Behavioural Analysis programs within the student’s school setting. These therapeutic programs continue the work of the early intervention that children may have received prior to school. How was your past year as Citizen of the Year? It was a real privilege. I had the opportunity to speak with many different groups in our community and I hope that I was able to champion acceptance and understanding of ASD during this time. What was it like being a part of the Queen’s Baton Relay? It was an absolute thrill to participate knowing my community had selected me to do this on their behalf. That morning I was running for my community and holding in mind all the families and children that had inspired my work past, present and future.

THE BUSINESS

BY ANDREA KELLETT

The Peninsula’s unstoppable entrepreneur Jessica Jones is on a new mission. While publicly it’s a new direction for the founder and former owner of Soar Collective (a network connecting women in business), it’s actually a long-held dream close to her heart. This working mother of two, supreme networker, brand builder and passionate Peninsula business woman now devotes her spare time to advocating for women’s rights and gender equality. She also continues in her familiar role with a microphone in hand as a speaker and MC. Mornington Peninsula Magazine has followed Jessica’s journey since she launched Soar Collective in May 2014. We have also shared her sage advice via her regular column in our business pages. Having sold the business late last year, we spoke with this dynamo about what she’s doing now and her 365-day ribbon-wearing campaign. “It’s always been there,” Jessica explains. “I’ve always been an advocate for women’s rights and gender equality ever since I was about four years old. Mum tells me one day I asked for something, and when she said to wait until Dad came home, I put my hands on my hips and said ‘Why can’t you make the decision yourself?’.” She laughs. Since selling Soar Collective, Jessica has stepped into a realm she describes as “her purpose”. “I’m trying to work

out the best possible way to use my energy and time to have the most positive impact,” she says. “I feel pretty lucky that we live in a country where we have freedom of speech but I think there are still not enough voices in this arena.” On International Women’s Day, Jessica met the inspirational Tara Moss and quietly started working on a campaign to raise the profile of gender equality and women’s rights. It involves wearing an IWD ribbon every day until the next International Women’s Day and posting one statistic every day plus one call to action relating to women’s rights and gender equality. “My idea is 365 days of International Women’s Day, not just a week of events,” she explains. Jessica will be launching her #365IWD campaign shortly and is thrilled to have the support of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, known as UN Women (National Committee Australia). Through this campaign and her passion for positive change, she intends to steam ahead as only she knows how. For more on Jessica, visit jessicajones.com.au or connect with her on social media. Nature unfolding in a radiant display of colour and texture. Emotion and movements of life connecting and illuminated as if in a dream. As an artist, Sharyn draws inspiration from her travels and expresses her emotions by painting scenes alive with energy and movement. She wants you to share her imagery, see the beauty and feel the energy. “Compositions of acrylic and mixed mediums reflect my continually evolving contemporary style whilst creating the sense of a place you’d like to enter while your imagination is intrigued,” Sharyn says. “My passion for painting is defined by exploring various techniques with the use of brushes, palette knives and sponges to create light, energy, emotion, movement and texture.” Sharyn defines her creativity by combining photography with drawing to arrive at the imagery created in her original paintings. We’ve helped

HUNDREDS

of elephants

Now we’re going

TO help THOUSANDS HUNDREDS TO THOUSANDS Dr Andrew McLean has always been ‘animal mad’. From his early childhood growing up in Drouin riding horses, befriending and observing any animal he could, his passion for animals continues to this day. As much as studying zoology at university fascinated him, Andrew was always interested in the behaviour of animals. After becoming a very successful horse trainer, he decided to obtain a PhD in equine cognition, and this was when he started to learn about learning theory – the concept of how knowledge is absorbed, processed and retained during APRIL 2018 (77)

learning. For Andrew, this really was the beginning of a long life in horse training and research, and he is now one of the most internationally recognised equine behaviourists in the world, providing evidence-based, ethically sustainable training solutions for the equestrian world. Andrew’s success as a horse trainer was brought to the attention of a Finnish science journalist, Helena Telkanranta, who approached Andrew to see if he felt he could have the same success with elephants. Elephant training in Asia is based on traditional methods involving brutal practices, which often lead to aggressive elephants turning on their mahouts (trainers). The mahouts need a safer way, and the elephants need a more

humane training approach. Andrew’s deep understanding of learning theory made the adaptation to training elephants an easy one, which led Andrew and co-founder Laurie Pond to begin the Human-Elephant Learning Programs, or the H-ELP Foundation. With the backing of his foundation, which is now a registered charity, Andrew and his team travel around Asia teaching mahouts a safe and ethical system for elephant training, changing the lives of mahouts and elephants across Asia. You can learn more about Andrew and the work of the H-ELP Foundation at the annual charity ball on June 16 at the Mornington Racecourse. Details: h-elp. org/attend-h-elp-ball/

Peninsula Dreaming is proud to present a Mother’s Day event to help raise money for the CSRIOapproved Dolphin Research Institute in Hastings. Working in collaboration with Gordon Studio Glass Blowers in Red Hill to create a beautiful selection of hand-blown glass candles, this talented team of innovators will donate a percentage from every candle sold from the exclusive Peninsula Colour Collection to help raise dolphin awareness. Each candle in the range is unique and a stand-alone piece of art. Colours are inspired by the bay, the Peninsula’s stunning sunsets, sunrises and the hinterland. The first release in the series honours the bay’s matriarch

dolphin, Esther, who is thought to have three calves of her own and can often be seen alongside other females with calves to give them support. The institute has been providing research, education and leadership for 27 years, and the money raised from candle sales will further its valued contribution to looking after such an adorable and valued species of marine life. Spoil your mum this Mother’s Day with a gift that keeps giving. Not only will you be purchasing a piece of sweet-smelling art – the scent for the fundraiser is sea mist and water lily – but you’ll be making a difference. Fine detail features in new paintings of bush medicine plants from the Central Australian community of Ampilatwatja contrasting with more painterly sweeps of color by artists of other desert regions in Whistlewood’s current Autumn Salon. “Artists of the community of Ampilatwatja made a decision some years ago to paint landscapes of the country on which their ancestral Dreaming stories sit rather than the iconography of the stories themselves,” says Whistlewood’s co-curator Susan McCulloch. “Going out on trips to the bush to collect leaves, seeds and roots to make traditional medicines and record the plants in paint is also an important part of their art.” The result, she says, has been a literal flowering of art in the community. “The paintings are joyous, quite detailed and distinctly different to anything else in Aboriginal art. Increasingly these artists are being asked to exhibit internationally and their work has been received very popularly in the US, the UK and Europe. We’ve been working with the community for about seven years now and are delighted to be showing these just-completed works.” Other new arrivals for the Autumn Salon include both brilliantly coloured and more softly hued paintings from the Pitjantjatjara lands of South Australia, those from the Pilbara, the central, western and eastern deserts, Utopia and Far North Queensland as well as textured ochres from the Kimberley. The Autumn Salon runs until April 29.

Sprouting in the deep south of Victoria on the Mornington Peninsula, the Chris Commerford Band moulds pop, blues, rock and roots to form a grooving sonic vessel. From acoustic singalongs to downright dirty grooves, the band offers a wide range of sculpted audio for every listener’s enjoyment. The four-piece pays homage to the blues and, more often than not, aren’t shy to bust out a blues number. Although it may be hard to nail down a genre to this band, one thing is clear - the music is all that matters. After two years in a beach shack-turned-studio, Chris and good friend Ian Treloar recorded and produced the Lion Head album, an eclectic catalogue of Chris’s writing over the past four years. Joining Chris onstage is a collection of extremely adept musicians. Tearnu Graham is a bass aficionado who’s locked to the groove while delicately delivering her beautiful harmonies. John Buggy, on a multi-layered setup, proficiently lays exciting and rich textures and tones, giving each song an extra dimension. Drummer Alex Fidel glues the sound as one with his solid beats and masterful command of the groove. Lion Head is available now on iTunes and Spotify. Everything we love about the peninsula, fresh every month

Penny Hart sees things through to the end. When she and her husband, Graeme, bought their Shoreham property about 20 years ago, they wanted a working farm, land that gave back after all the blood, sweat and tears. Land that paid for its dinner. Luckily neither of these Peninsula-connected people were afraid of getting their hands dirty, nor are they afraid of the endless hours it still takes to plant, nurture and reap tangible rewards. Mother Nature likes to throw everything but the kitchen sink at you when toiling the seductive Peninsula hinterland soil, but the Harts have taken on this unforgiving mistress to relish farm gate subsisting. “The first couple of years were spent planting the wind breaks and planning,” Penny says. “We originally bought the property as a weekender but by the third year our whole farm plan was complete and we decided to plant olives. I went to an olive conference and then planted 800 trees in one weekend. All the irrigation went in too. We had the help of family and friends. It was back-breaking work - cooking for everyone and getting the trees in. Our olive grove now consists of

1300 trees and we produce extra virgin olive oil and a variety of table olives. “We have a deep connection with Shoreham,” continues Penny. “Graeme’s grandmother and her sister ran the local post office and used to travel to town in a horse and buggy. Only 10 of our 25 acres (four of 10ha) doesn’t produce now. Our apple and pear orchard was planted in 2010 and had its first crop in 2014. The cider (Harts Farm Bottle Fermented Apple Cider) just won three medals at the Red Hill and National Cider Shows - 325 trees later and hours of picking, crushing and bottling.” You can see why this dialysis nurse in a previous life loves living on the land. There’s the ibis and ducks, the cockatoos that take 10 per cent of the olive crop, goshawks and wedge-tailed eagles and two gorgeous dogs. There’s also a bed and breakfast couples’ retreat on the property and a farm gate shop that’s open on Sunday afternoons. It is apparent that hard yakka and learning by doing seven days a week gets the job done. Sure does. Hart’s Farm is at 300 Tucks Rd, Shoreham. Go online at hartsfarm.com. au to find out more.

Wild Mushroom Meander... Wine + Food Extravaganza The annual May mushroom meander will again begin within the rustic setting of T’Gallant Vineyards in Main Ridge. Ramblers will be enlightened on how to identify the different varieties of mushrooms palatable and poisonous - prevalent on the Mornington Peninsula. Enjoy a gentle, informative saunter throughout our vineyard, unearthing the mysteries of the fungi kingdom, such as Slippery Jack, Agaricus + Pine Mushrooms and an educational viticulture

Nestled among the rolling hills of the Mornington Peninsula, T’Gallant is the home of pinot grigio in Australia. The T’Gallant story began in 1990 when it championed the planting of pinot grigio vineyards in the region. This was considered a bold move at the time; nonetheless, almost 30 years on, T’Gallant is renowned for creating a range of expressions of the now immensely popular grape variety from crisp and zingy pinot grigio styles to the rich, aromatic and luscious pinot gris – alongside a range of other wines with vibrant personalities. The T’Gallant Cellar Door and pizzeria is located on a former apple orchard in Main Ridge. Join the lively Cellar Door team for a tasting and they can show you the differences between pinot grigio and pinot gris wines. Also available to try are sparkling moscatos and proseccos, crisp rosés and fruit-driven pinot noirs, among other foodfriendly wines. If you’re after a bite of lunch, the T’Gallant Spuntino Bar is the birthplace of Romanstyle pizza on the Peninsula, serving up a menu of classic Italian and provincial-style dishes seven days a week. On weekends, the outdoor bar serves wine straight from the APRIL 2018 (77)

With a new year comes new food trends, so to kick off 2018 we’ve listed the stand-out food movements that may surprise. Floral flavours

Your drinks and dishes are going to bloom this season with the addition of colourful edible flowers and floral flavours. Keep an eye out for elderflower and rose flavours, especially in your mocktails and lattes.

Plant-based foods

For those wanting to cut back on meat and dairy, there will be plenty of options available, from plant-based burgers to nut milks and yoghurts. Many can be mistaken for the real thing.

Tea

Tea bars have been breaking into the market with the sales of green and other

Gut-friendly food

Fermenting, pickling and preserving foods is the way to go for 2018, allowing us all of the boundless belly benefits from kimchi and kombucha and other probiotic-packed foods and beverages. Along with the increase of gut health awareness, foods that are tummy friendly are also on the rise.

Super powders

and many other varieties to get their daily boost of health benefits.

Root-to-stem movement

With an ever-growing concern surrounding food waste, expect to see once-discarded parts from fruits and vegies take on a new form in your dishes. You might see carrot tops as garnishes, pickled watermelon rinds as snacks and broccoli stems in your stir-fry.

Puffed and popped snacks

Due to new extrusion methods, you’ll surely come across popped and puffed foods such as pasta, quinoa, flavoured rice, peas and even seaweed! Supplied by Orgran Health & Nutrition, Carrum Downs

New Barmah Park now open for dinner BY ANDREA KELLETT

The Mornington Peninsula has a new dinner venue and it’s a familiar setting with a stunning new look.

Welcome to Barmah Park Restaurant & Cellar Door in Moorooduc. This long-established venue with sweeping 180-degree vineyard views is under new management and it is now open for dinner Friday and Saturday nights and for breakfast and lunch every day year-round. This is family-friendly vine-side dining a-la Mornington Peninsula style. Turn off the Moorooduc Highway, park with ease and enjoy a fully renovated, free-flowing dining space seemingly in another world. The new-look interior features floorto-ceiling windows, leather couches by a warming wood heater, indoor and outdoor seating, a separate cellar door and an enclosed space for children to play - complete with a sandpit - while parents wine and dine the day (and evenings) away! Husband and wife restaurant

managers David and Mary, along with French-trained Japanese chef Yoshitaka Kojima, have created a relaxed dining experience with high-quality seasonal menus. “It’s exceptional quality, with interesting flavours,” Mary explains. The autumn menu is out now. Barmah Park Restaurant & Cellar Door is a beautiful gathering place away from the hustle and bustle of life. Sip estate wine and gaze at the vineyard while enjoying a delicious meal. Drop in for coffee or a shared platter with a glass of wine. Connect your style. Cook and Dine by the Sea

Deborah has always loved all things Italian. She speaks Italian, studied Italian regional cookery and was taught how to make fresh pasta by Gennaro Contaldo, one of the ‘Two Greedy Italians’ who comes from a family of pasta makers and is the mentor of Jamie Oliver.

Purchasing a resort-style house in Mount Martha with husband Rod has enabled Deborah to develop a cook together, feast together experience for guests sharing dishes that are authentic and delicious, yet simple. Lunch or dinner is then enjoyed along with a magnificent sea view. The house had a separate self-contained apartment, which allowed the addition of Kiss Me by the Sea (luxury accommodation for two) Fare Italian Cookery School, just near Mount Martha village, provides visitors the opportunity to learn how to cook authentic Italian cuisine in a spectacular setting … and stay in luxury accommodation while doing so. Deborah believes a passion for Italian food can bring people together regardless of their cooking ability. Beginners and good cooks alike are all welcome at the dining table by the sea. Love the name. How did it come about? The underlining meaning about The Girl & Bull is “fearless”. Story goes a little something like this: girl meets bull, bull charges at girl, girl stares down bull, bull is tamed. We wanted to name our own establishment with something that had a significant meaning yet was quite different. Everybody wants to stand out. How would you describe The Girl & Bull aesthetic? An elegant yet relaxed environment that consists of soft furnishings and chairs with modern décor that’s designed to make you feel at home in a comfortable and stylish setting. Is this your first foray into the restaurant way of life? Owners for the first time, yes, although we have a lifetime of experience in the hospitality industry working in a variety of venues in Melbourne and on the Mornington Peninsula. We have a strong passion for high-quality, on-trend food, local beverages and exceptional service and we are thrilled to be able to execute this now in our own establishment. What do you enjoy most about your job? Providing our guests with the best possible dining experience. We love having regulars that gradually become part of The Girl & Bull family. In addition to the outstanding wines of the Peninsula, there are also an increasing number of other drinking options becoming available. Two new breweries have opened in the past couple of months, and with many cider options and an excellent distillery, local tipples are plentiful. Below are three of my favourites.

Old Apple Shed, Apple Cider $65 per case This cellar door popped up along Browns Rd at the old Tallarida Estate less than a year ago and now would have to be one of the most popular in the region. It has an excellent range of wines, but for a lot of people the real show-stopper is its range of ciders including apple, pear, strawberry and passionfruit, with apple being my favourite. In my nearly five years running a wine tour company, I have never seen a product go out the door so fast. People love this cider. Naturally made from real apples, with a nice sweetness while still remaining crisp, these are definitely worth a look

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE @GPO HOTEL seasonal menus I fresh, local ingredients family friendly I live music events PH: 5982 3200 1003 POINT NEPEAN RD, ROSEBUD www.thegpo.com.au

Bass and Flinders, Gin 10 – Wild and Spicy $98 Bass and Flinders makes a range of grape-based spirits from local shiraz and chardonnay grapes. What’s special about this is that most of the new wave of boutique gin distilleries buy in commercial ethanol then distil it again and add the botanicals. B&F does it the hard way, taking it all the way from grapes to gin by distilling multiple times. The results are amazing and you can really taste the difference it makes. My favourite in the range is the Gin 10; my wife loves Hendricks and tonic with cucumber and lime, and if I had to draw a comparison to a big brand, that would be it. Seriously enjoyable.

Mornington Peninsula Brewery Pale Ale - $72 a slab There is more competition locally in the beer stakes than ever before. A classic beer that has been around for a while but is still a favourite is Mornington Peninsula Brewery Pale Ale. It strikes a perfect balance as it has hints of that craft beer hop and fruitiness but is still very ‘sessionable’ and ‘beery’, meaning it will satisfy your craft brew enthusiast and your more traditional beer drinker. Sorrento’s awardwinning Trattoria BY LIZ ROGERS

Sorrento Trattoria is the perfect blend of traditional and contemporary Italian ambience and fresh Italian flavours. This is a place where family and friends come to express and taste, laugh and enjoy the essence of what it means to be alive and indulge in the good life. Recently receiving the Ospitalità Italiana, an international award given from the Italian Republic through the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Melbourne and the Italian Consulate in Australia, this little slice of Italy brings the

best from both countries to create a unique coastal grazing table. Owner, international chef, cooking instructor and author Carmela D’Amore explains. “Sorrento Trattoria combines generations of Sicilian flavours with the best Australian produce. It was great to be given the gold seal of certification and to be recognised for delivering authentic Italian hospitality. To welcome people into our restaurant with open arms and to offer delicious food made with love – this is what Sorrento Trattoria is about.” Sorrento Trattoria’s authenticity is set in stone. Carmela and her husband, Marco, come from a long line of food experts. “Half the village came from Sicily to Australia after the Second World War,” she laughs. “Everyone opened restaurants; pizzerias and Italian bakeries. We

have three chefs and are open for dinner seven days a week and for lunch from Thursday through Sunday.” Carmela and her family are looking forward to hosting their Sicilian Long Table event this winter, and Carmela’s second book The Heart of the Table is set to be released in June. “Magic truly begins at ‘la tavola’ (the table),” says Carmela. Spirit of kinship inspires artist Melanie Hava’s paintings draw their inspiration from her Aboriginal and Austrian heritage. Raised in the Far North Queensland region, her upbringing was steeped in Aboriginal lore and her paintings reflect her spiritual connection with the tropical rainforests and the creatures of the Great Barrier Reef. This collection is inspired by the spirit of kinship. While growing up in the Outback, Melanie would see emus travelling through the long grasses. Occasionally, she would observe two males joining forces to protect their chicks. This banding together in kinship to feed and protect their mob echoes the way Aborigines once lived. See this gorgeous collection of Melanie’s at Koh Living in Mornington. A portion of each sale is paid to the artist. KOH LIVING A: 59 Main St, Mornington T: 0400 844 481

No one is better in the bedroom. Bedshed has been saying it for years and now the forward-thinking team at Bedshed Mornington are taking things to another level with their newly renovated showroom. The doors opened on Bedshed Mornington’s new space early this year after an extensive month-long renovation in December. It’s the first major renovation since the store opened in the Peninsula Home complex more than 13 years ago. Part-owner Alan and his staff have created a result that’s fresh, contemporary and irresistibly easy to navigate. “Our goal was to create a more contemporary looking

store and since we’ve done the renovation we’ve had an incredible number of interior designers come in and they’re sending their clients to us so they can see how their bedrooms can look,” Alan explains. “The shop just flows better and it allows customers who don’t want to talk to a sales consultant, and a lot don’t, to work out where the mattresses that suit are located. “The mattress display has been logically arranged so that the centre walkway models are firm, the central row are medium feel and the outside rows are softer. Customers can then more easily make a better choice. Our 60 Night Comfort Guarantee ensures the customer is not stuck with the wrong product if it turns out to be not suitable, and can re-select another model from our entire range.” From new flooring and new carpet to new roofing, new computer systems, new phones and, of course, new displays, this is major. Bedshed Mornington means business. This locally-owned store now has an impressive

9.1m LED-lit Tempur light box – the only one of its kind. And here’s a fascinating insight into this brand TEMPUR® Material was developed by NASA in the 1970s to cushion and support astronauts during lift-off, the company states on its website. “We are the largest seller of Tempur by a miracle mile on the Peninsula and that includes Frankston,” Alan explains. “And what that does is it allows our customers to have the best opportunity to choose the right mattresses.” Bedshed is a national bedding and bedroom furniture specialist with stores in metropolitan Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane and Canberra and regionally across WA and Queensland. The Bedshed range includes such top brands as Sealy Posturepedic, Tempur, Sleepmaker and more. Bedshed Mornington is located in Peninsula Home. Park out front with ease and experience the new-look Bedshed.

DCB’s custom-made plantation shutters are an ideal choice for thermal insulation. Open the louvres to stream light into rooms and close to insulate for a more energy-efficient home through autumn and heading into the winter months ahead. Extremely practical, you will have excellent control of light and airflow and also peace of mind, with no cords making DCB’s plantation shutters child and pet-safe. Adding plantation shutters across your home’s front windows can make a huge impact to your home’s façade and kerb appeal. Along with these aesthetic benefits, shutters also add sound insulation from outside road and traffic noise. Ensure you opt for true custom-made plantation shutters like those from DCB, which are designed and hand-crafted specifically for a snug fit on your windows. DCB also has plantation shutters that are suitable for wet and high humidity areas such as bathrooms, toilets and laundries. Clean and green Mount Martha BERG – the Balcombe Estuary Reserves Group - wants to see Mount Martha Village plastic bag-free! This dedicated group of more than 400 ecologically and environmentally minded people are determined to change the way residents think about how they use plastic bags and where they end up. Coinciding with the ABC’s War on Waste series, the screening of the documentary A Plastic Ocean and the 2017 litter audits the group conducted with schools at the head of the estuary, BERG is keen to bring the plastic pollution problem to the fore heading further into 2018. Field officer Liz Barraclough, who has been with the group from its inception 21

BY LIZ ROGERS years ago, has been heartened by the positive response from schools and traders already. She explains. “We met with the village traders last December to try to develop a plan of action to stop the use of plastic bags. Some traders already suggest alternatives and have undertaken to instruct their employees not to offer or fill plastic bags automatically. We’re also putting signage around the village to remind people of the alternatives like reusable and recyclable bags. Balcombe Grammar teachers have reported more awareness, fewer plastic-wrapped lunches and more discussions after the screening of the documentary and litter collections. We’ll also continue to have our monthly working bees on the second Sunday and Tuesday between 9am and noon, our monthly coastal group on the third Wednesday

and our weekly Friday working bees. Waterwatch and estuary watch testing occurs monthly on the fourth Sunday.” The Balcombe Estuary reserve covers 44ha of bushland along the Balcombe Creek’s lower reaches and supports a wide range of flora and fauna, including native orchids, shrubs, manna gums, she-oaks, wetland birds, native fish, lizards and frogs. Echidnas, bats and possums also call the region home. Liz would like to see all Mount Martha residents become involved in ensuring their survival. Where to start? Bring your own bag. Our monthly column promoting a cleaner, greener peninsula

HERE’S WHY DUCT CLEANING IS IMPORTANT Consumers are often sceptical about duct cleaning. They are often unsure as to what duct cleaning entails and how often it’s needed. “If you are considering cleaning your ducted heating system it is important to realise that the entire system needs to be cleaned, not just the ducts.” In most cases up to 90 per cent of the dust (and therefore dust mites, pollens, germs and fungi) that clog up your system are located in the air return ducting and heater interior, only 10 per cent is in the outlet ducts. The dust and germs stored here breed and multiply continuously, even when the system is not in use. These contaminants lay ready and waiting for you to turn the system on, allowing them to blow around your home for you and your family to breathe in. Full System Cleaning removes this build up and ensures your system delivers clean healthy air into your home. A full system clean system also allows air to flow unrestricted, ensuring your system runs more efficiently.

The Full System Duct Clean Process Step 1: Return Air Duct Cleaned: Removes built up dust and contaminants from the return air duct line. Takes around 45 minutes to complete. Step 2: Cleaning of Heater Interior: Removes ducts and contaminants from lining inside the heater, the fan blades and motor and the heat exchanger. Also takes around 45 minutes. Step 3: All Duct Lines Are Cleaned and Checked: Removes contaminants, dust and debris from the duct lines that run from the heat to each individual outlet. About 5 minutes per outlet. Step 4: Sanitising with Bactigas, Natural Teatree Disinfectant: This sanitises your entire ducted heating system. Bactigas is distilled from the Australian teatree plant, and is a natural antiseptic. Provided your system is cleaned correctly, three years is a suitable time frame for cleaning, more often if your household contains people with severe dust allergies.
