The penny dropped when organising a nurse for his 87-year-old much-loved mother, Pina. The nurse, Kent, asked Pina what her son did for a living and her proud response was: “My son is a designer.” Designer of books. Designer of food. Designer of spaces and events. Guy Mirabella loves to take a pin prick of an idea and push it out into the ether as an immersive full-blown concept. It is this designing nature that has brought him to work with the Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery to plate up the perfect sensory encounter for the lucky few who are part of The Cook, the Artist, their Work and Paper experience being held on September 8 at the gallery. Guy chats. “I’d never really thought of myself as a designer until Mum let that one loose. Yes, I’ve had a designing life. I was a freelance designer of academic and illustrated books, had a stint as creative director at Belle Magazine, and have authored a few cookbooks too. There’s been some awards from the Australian Book Publishing Association. With books, it’s much more of a slow burn. You get up in the middle of the night and go back time and time again. Food’s much more immediate. When the response is good, all your troubles melt away. We had a Thai-styled soup in Shop Ate today and the reaction was incredibly positive. I love that. It’s about feeding the community with ideas, flavour and design. It’s what I’ve always done.” Guy’s love of food has led others to tastebud nirvana and is delivered with a slightly left of centre gastronomical grunt. His tucker is so visual and soul-satisfying and presented in a straddling the equator — yes, you could be in Mount Eliza, New York or Paris — kinda way that you may feel especially special. He continues. “The 2018 National Works on Paper exhibition at MPRG is the perfect setting for my food.” Think liquorice ice cream with black nori seafood paper and delicious parcels offered on arrival to tie in with the paper theme. Guy is currently poring through his art books for inspiration. “Andy Warhol, David Hockney, Tony Tuckson and Jackson Pollock are some of my motivations. There will be four chefs on the night. Student creativity comes to life during Arts Week Students at Toorak College recently enjoyed a specially themed week to celebrate The Arts. Arts Week is one of the most vibrant weeks on campus and it is so great to see all students getting involved, collaborating on projects, developing their creativity and trying something they may not have tried before. During the week, students were encouraged to express their creativity and participate in a range of activities such as origami and pompom making, photography tutorials, ‘try an instrument’ day, baking classes, dance sessions and drama performances. Guest speaker Sarah Ben-M’Rad (TC ‘14) spoke to our media students about her experience working in television and how she is currently writing, filming and editing a sitcom pilot that she plans to pitch to the television networks. “From an early age I knew that I wanted to work in television and I have been unapologetic in following my dream. My advice for those wanting a career in media is to just do the work.

Talk about a success story. Mornington saddle-maker Peter Horobin Saddlery has been working hard at its craft since 1985. Mornington Peninsula Magazine loves it when locals make good internationally, and this premium saddle business has been doing just that for the past few years with orders now galloping in from across five continents. Dedicated to the perfection of saddle-making, including aesthetics and rider/horse comfort, this family-owned and operated business is in its second generation of providing clients with premium product and has come a long way from the days of Peter’s saddle apprenticeship at one of the oldest saddleries in Germany. Saddle up, readers, you’re in for a bespoke saddle success story where the hero is hard work — and yes, there’s nothing like the smell of a luscious leather saddle to inspire you even if you’re not much of a rider, in case you were wondering! It’s all about family and handing down the craft at Peter Horobin Saddlery. Peter and his wife, Julie, began the business after amateur jockey Peter, who had ridden in the Grand National in Germany, returned home. He knew the gig was up after he grew too tall, so he began making bridles and cutting saddles. Peter and Julie met in 1982, got married and got down to the business of crafting on the Mornington Peninsula. Peter explains. “I knew I was too tall to continue being a jockey, so I decided to make a career out of saddle making. With many years of continual designing and manufacturing, our newest innovation, the StrideFree Tree (inside the saddle), is incredibly flexible, while all our saddles are flocked with 100 per cent wool from sustainable farms throughout Europe and Australia. They’ve been used in both equestrian and racing events, in the Garryowen (equestrian showing class) three times, on Melbourne Cup winners and in the 2000 Olympics. I can’t believe how the business has grown. It’s great to be able to hand down

something like this to the next generation and hopefully to the next. It’s around the clock work, though. Sometimes we’re here fitting saddles until 10pm and there’s lots of travel involved. We like to do business one to one.” Peter has been back and forth to the UK and the EU over the past 12 months. His 27-year-old son Rhys has just returned from 12 months in Germany training saddle fitters and meeting his new Austrian partner, Angie. Rhys joins in. “Equine back health, optimum performance and great customer service is at the heart of our business. Horse comfort is vital. All our saddles are made from A-grade leather sourced from some of the oldest tanneries in Europe who use eco-friendly tanning methods. It’s great working with the family. Sometimes it gets a little ‘close’, but overall we get along really well.” Peter concludes. “I still love riding. I’ve just spent six days with Marlee (his daughter, who is also in the business) in the high country in NSW. Cheeky campaign’s serious message
When it comes to beautiful locations, the Mornington Peninsula could be considered the crown of Melbourne. With 264km of coastline, Port Phillip Bay joins the city to the seaside township of Rye, where the subject of butts is on everyone’s lips. Litter survey reports taken by Rye resident and freediver Josie Jones indicate 31,000 cigarette butts were littered in the past year in Rye. For a coastal town of just over 12,000 residents, that’s a lot of unwanted butts entering their environment. In discussions with Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Bryan Payne, Josie shared some facts on butt litter in Rye. “Statistics show that fewer people litter on beaches,� Josie says. “However, 95 per cent of beach litter found comes via stormwater outlets, which is why getting butts in bins is so important.� Raising awareness of the fact that cigarette butts contain plastic – “Plastic to the ocean starts in our street� — Josie told Bryan she intended to create a campaign as a voice for the community and the marine life. “I asked how serious Bryan felt about the issue of plastic in the ocean, given cigarette butts make up over half the litter found.
“Bryan, like all true legends, said yes, he was serious, and on January 7, the day of the annual Seaside Scavenge and a day after temperatures of over 40C, he joined the community of Rye in a stand against cigarette butt littering by showing his butt for a great cause.â€? Josie’s campaign might have a cheeky name but her message is serious: the only butts she wants to see on our beaches are those clad in the bathers, bikinis and shorts of beachgoers. The Only Butt is designed to run in conjunction with the Victorian Litter Action Alliance and is aimed at raising awareness of the harm done to our oceans by cigarette butts, as well as educating and encouraging community involvement. The campaign will run in Rye up until the next mayoral election. Ten freestanding Enviropole ashtrays will be installed across the town at designated litter hot spots, and campaign posters of dierent designs will be displayed throughout the town. “The ashtrays each hold up to 4000 butts and have been generously donated to the campaign by Enviropoles,â€? Josie says. “The Lions Club of Rye, along with local businesses such as SiSCo Pizza, have donated monies to support the printing of the posters, and many other business owners from across the bay, such as XMax and Modom Surf, along with locals The Sorrento Stylist and Feather and Stone have contributed towards the campaign.â€? The Only Butt campaign has been running on Instagram since January.

“A healthy line of butts are coming in from all over the world,â€? Josie says. “You’d be amazed at how many people are willing to show their butts for a great cause.â€? Every year in Australia, 7.2 billion cigarette butts are littered. The Only Butt is designed to be tailored across any shire with the aim of getting other municipalities across the Port Phillip catchment to adopt the campaign. “Mayor Bryan Payne has set a great example to other mayors in our eorts to reduce litter and take pride in our local environment,â€? says Josie. Rye is not only known for its ďŹ shing and sandy shore, it is home to a full stable of seahorses, with more seahorses recorded here than anywhere else in Port Phillip. Audits of this incredibly unique environment also reveal more than 90 species of marine animals live in and around the Rye Pier. Litter on our beaches and in our bay is a real bummer, so let’s all get o our butts and support The Only Butt!

Andrew Owen is a multimedia and information technology kind of guy. His digital work ranges from producing marketing material such as 3D 1:1 scale helicopters for the San Andreas movie launch to his concept art being used by actor Barry Bostwick, from The Rocky Horror Picture Show, at the fan conventions he attends. He’s an illustrator and painter too, but we really want to talk to him about his Tech Games Fest that has just got game enthusiasts’ tongues wagging. Andrew brings his A-game to everything he does. This 46-year-old Somerville trainer and assessor in the IT Communications and Business department at Chisholm has energy to burn and is so passionate about bringing technology to the masses you’d be forgiving for thinking he was still in his teens. Gamers never grow old, do they? Surrounding himself with popular culture and all things gaming from an early age,

he’s been involved in esports for about 10 years and created the Tech Games Fest after hosting his Computer Games Boot Camp for six years until about five years ago. There’s been four major three-day Tech Games Fests held at Chisholm, which has been a great supporter of the event, and the most recent one last month was bigger and better than ever. He explains. “The event has something
for everyone across cosplay, gaming, networking, programming, virtual reality and ethical hacking. It also covers pop culture, card and board games, esports, video games, plus there’s talks by industry sponsors. There are also opportunities for work experience and volunteering, which is great for meeting like-minded people. It’s a real labour of love. I start working on each event six months ahead, but it’s worth it to provide a place for people who love particular brands of gaming and want to share that passion with others. Plus it’s great fun.”
Andrew has raised up to $30,000 for TLC for Kids, an Australian children’s charity helping sick kids and their families, from his events over the years. Last month’s free Tech Games Fest was open to the public for the first time, with 30 volunteers and 160 work experience students on board. Watch out for his Beyond 2018 event at the end of the year. Global travellers flock to Peninsula Every year around August, flocks of critically endangered eastern curlews arrive at the Australian coastline — including our own Mornington Peninsula — after a perilous 10,000km migration through 22 countries from their breeding grounds in the Arctic.
In his new book The Eastern Curlew - The Extraordinary Life of a Migratory Bird, award-winning nature writer Harry Saddler explores how these birds have impressed themselves on the cultures of the countries they pass through, the threat to their survival posed by development, and the remarkable ways in which the eastern curlew and humankind may be entwined. “My favourite place to see eastern curlews — and one of my favourite places in general — is French Island,” Harry says. “I once saw a flock of 70 fly past the ferry jetty at Tankerton, and with luck you might see eastern curlews at Hastings Foreshore Reserve.” French Island is a great place to see all sorts of migratory shorebirds but you don’t have to get on a boat to enjoy them: nearly the whole of Western Port is listed as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention, which means that the east coast of the Mornington Peninsula has great places to see many of the other migratory shorebirds that spend summer with us before flying back to the Arctic. “The best time to see shorebirds varies depending on the tide. So much of their life revolves around stacking on fat for their epic migratory flights, so when the tide is out they’ll be feeding on the little animals that live on mudflats,” Harry says. “Sometimes that’s in the middle of the day, sometimes the middle of the night.” The sad fact is that habitat loss along their migration route means each year there are fewer and fewer migratory shorebirds such as eastern curlews to be seen. Already they’ve disappeared from many places where they used to be annual visitors. In 1903, William Gillies wrote a book called Nature Studies in Australia in which he described hearing an eastern curlew calling near

Dromana, but if you look on either eBird or the Atlas of Living Australia — the two most commonly used citizen science portals for birdwatchers — the most recent record of eastern curlews from anywhere near Dromana is from all the way back in 1999. “What I love most about the Mornington Peninsula is that it’s so close to my home in Melbourne, but it feels so far away,” Harry says. “I love to visit Stony Point, where on a sunny summer’s day Western Port is so blue and calm and peaceful. You can feel all the stress and noise of the city just falling off your shoulders as soon as you set eyes on the water. Crab-grabbing Crystal and the dancing seahorses BY KATE SEARS
Jules Casey is at it again. Actually, to be perfectly honest, she freedives nearly every day so she never really stops to take a breath. If you missed our story on Jules in our last issue, this freediver takes amazing underwater footage with her GoPro Hero 6 after taking just one breath of air. This month she let us in on three remarkable species that are gracing Blairgowrie pier at this time of year. Spider crabs have just finished gathering at the pier to moult, shedding their hard outer shell, and divers got to experience the phenomenon over seven to 10 days in the shallows. “We thought it had finished, then we were pleasantly surprised to discover a second group appear but out much deeper,” said Jules. “It was unusual to have two groups, and the second was bigger than the first. It’s hard to estimate but there would have been anywhere between 5000 and 10,000 spider crabs.” Now, meet Crystal. She is an extremely rare albino smooth ray. Jules captured wonderful footage of her eating spider crabs as they began moulting, sucking them up and munching on them the moment they shed their shell. This footage was passed on by her content manager, Storyful, and it made its way to National Geographic. Her dive buddy noticed Crystal while they were watching the Issue 81, AUGUST 2018
spider crabs three years ago. She’s a shy creature who only appears at this time of year, and Jules was able to spend 30 minutes with her. At first Crystal wasn’t sure how to handle this lady with her camera watching her eat, and would swim away. But when she realised Jules wasn’t pursuing her, Crystal’s inquisitive nature — and, presumably, her appetite — got the better of her and she’d come swimming back. “She became so chilled out and relaxed,” said Jules. “She was extremely timid at the start.” Now, we females all know and adore the baby-carrying male seahorse because he’s the most considerate partner out there, right? But did you know that the ‘love dance’ is rarely caught on camera? Jules has captured the moment not once but twice, when the male puffs out his belly to show the female that he’s the most suitable carrier of her eggs. His colouring then changes as they dance around each other. This has been photographed before, but the transfer of eggs to the male is much harder to find and capture. “I watched the seahorses for 20 minutes; my camera battery even went dead in the end but I got it,” said Jules. “When they pass the eggs they rise to the surface slowly. The male will carry the eggs to term, which is normally about three to four weeks. Jules has recently also witnessed cuttlefish mating, Port Jackson sharks swimming near the pier, and the biggest stingrays she’s ever seen. Scott Hanley has a bad back. After 20 years working on the beat as a boy in blue on the Mornington Peninsula, this St Andrews Beach local has taken to woodworking like a fish to water. Manoeuvring and moulding spotted and red gum, oak, limestone, medium-density fibreboard and whatever organic matter he can into something beautiful. Not that he hasn’t been working with wood for ever. School was where his passion for creating began. He explains. “I’ve always had a thing for timber, whether wood-turning or sculpting. I did a bit of it in high school and have always tinkered around in the shed. Now I’ve left the police force I’m spending as much time as I want doing it. I’ve even made a purpose-built bench in the shed. I have to stand

these days because of my back and my right leg. I stuffed it on the job.” It’s not an easy gig being in the force. There are the late nights, exposure to dramatic situations and the personalities that procure them. One dark Rye night, Scott lifted a dead weight that changed the way his body worked for ever. Woodworking has seen him through some tough times. “It’s very therapeutic working with such a beautiful natural material. It’s like a meditation or a trance. We are about 500m away from the water here in St Andrews Beach and all my work comes from the inspiration around me. I love bringing home discarded wood and turning it into whatever I feel like at the time. We (his wife and now two kids) have been here since 2002 and it just gets better. There’s nowhere like the Mornington Peninsula.” Ocean-related sculptures such as waves, surf and paddle boards, stingrays and dolphins are what you’ll find at St Andrews Beach Woodworking. May, Scott is off to Leongatha to exhibit his gorgeous wooden creations next, but stand-alone sculptures (which are sometimes up to 30kg in weight) are not all this Peninsula artist pumps out. He also makes cheese and wine tables for the beach, surfboard wine racks, plant hangers, salad servers, salt and pepper grinders, letterboxes, and reinvents old wooden items by turning them into something extra-special. “I’ve lost about threequarters of the feeling in my right leg from serious nerve damage, but standing at my bench working with wood has helped me recover. BY KATE SEARS If you’re lucky, you might catch these guys having a whale of a time in Port Phillip Bay as they take a break during their annual migration from the Antarctic to Queensland. Every year between May and August, humpback whales make their way north along the Victorian coastline to their subtropical breeding grounds off the Queensland coast, where they mate and give birth. During September and November they make their way back south along the coastline bound for the Southern Ocean to stock up on food and prepare for the next mating season. If you’re hoping for a glimpse of these majestic mammals in our backyard, their distinctive ‘blow’ is often the first thing to look out for. The ‘blow’ is a cloud of vapour that the whale shoots into the air when it breaks the surface to breathe, and it can be up to 4m high. The humpback whale is the easiest to recognise thanks to a humped area of blubber behind its dorsal fin that is accentuated by the arching of its back when it dives. Breaching is an amazing sight. It’s when a humpback whale launches itself out of the water in an impressive acrobatic display. A breach can be seen from a great distance, and it’s an action that is one of the most dramatic and aweinspiring in the animal kingdom. Female humpbacks are larger than the males, which is common among baleen whales, growing to up to 16m in length and weighing up to 50 tonnes. This makes them one of the largest species of whale. These majestic creatures cruise at a speed of up to 7km/h and over the course of a year can travel more than 25,000km. A healthy humpback whale can live for 100 years. Now, get those binoculars out!

Exhibitions honour pioneers of art and design Two exhibitions that pay tribute to important figures in the fields of painting and landscape design are on show at McClelland Sculpture Park+Gallery in Langwarrin. Sanné Mestrom: Black Paintings features works made from free-standing steel frames and undyed wool. Sanné’s installations are commentaries on the broad nature of current painting and sculptural practice and reference US artist Frank Stella’s iconic 1960s Black Paintings, which made important breakthroughs in the way painters thought about surface and the ‘object quality’ in their work. Gordon Ford’s natural Australian garden is an exhibition of research by Annette Warner, from the Melbourne School of Design at the University of Melbourne. It presents diverse archive material relating to the influential practice of mid‐to-late 20th century landscape designer
Gordon Ford. Ford was recently recognised as a person of National Significance for his contribution to an Australian naturalistic approach to landscape design. Historically he is linked to the development of the Eltham creative movement and significant figures such as the architect Alistair Knox, photographer Sue Ford and other well‐known artists, writers and designers of this time. Reading with dogs a success story BY KATE SEARS A student reads to Clyde and his owner, Kelly, as part of the Story Dogs literacy program.
No child should be left behind in literacy. To make reading fun for children so they become confident, lifelong readers, Story Dogs visits primary schools and allows children to read to a dog and its handler in a private, non-judgmental setting. As of last month, 1840 children Australia-wide have been helped by Story Dogs. There are 366 volunteer dog teams and 220 schools are involved. The not-for-profit Story Dogs program provides well-trained dogs and their volunteer owners to assist students with their literacy skills and in many cases their emotional needs. There’s an amazing outcome when a child reads to a dog; the child’s literacy skills increase, their focus improves, and their confidence blooms. It’s the accepting, loving nature of dogs that gives the program its pure magic, helping the children open up, relax, try harder and have fun while reading. During the session the handler will often speak through the dog, saying such things as: “Spot doesn’t understand what’s happening on this page. Can you help him out?” Here the child
becomes the teacher and their confidence soars. Story Dogs was formed by Leah Sheldon and Janine Sigley in 2009, and the Melbourne branch was launched in 2014. Believing that learning to read is often less about intellectual limitation than overcoming fears is what gives Story Dogs its high success rate. The dogs are the perfect reading buddies because they promote relaxation and don’t judge, laugh or criticise, allowing the child to proceed at their own pace. It’s a program that creates a relaxed, fun space for children to practise their reading skills in a quiet area of the school grounds for 20 minutes of one-on-one time with the dog team and a book chosen to suit their reading level. When it comes to teaching children to read, there is growing evidence to suggest it can help to have kids read to a dog. There are 12 volunteer dog teams within the Frankston and Mornington Peninsula area and they’re rapidly growing. Several schools have indicated that they would like multiple teams because they can see the benefits of the program reflected in their students’ confidence and progress. St Kilda’s beloved Hotel Esplanade will reopen in November when hospitality group Sand Hill Road unveils its landmark development of the seaside icon. Restored to its former grandeur and glory, The Espy will be home to a dynamic range of lifestyle experiences and offer a new dining, drinking and cultural destination to Melbourne. While 140 years of history buoys The Espy, Sand Hill Road has not only looked to the venue’s proud past but to its future for inspiration. Director Andy Mullins fondly recalls what the previous owners told them the day the sale went through. “They said that we might have bought The Espy, but we’d never really own it. It belongs to the people of Melbourne. We have always loved the pub, but we know that it holds a special place in many different hearts for many different reasons. The team has spent the past 12 months delving into the venue’s fascinating history and meeting the residents, artists, bookers, comedians, managers, family and friends who have great memories of big nights in the Gershwin Room and the main bar to help shape The Espy’s exciting new chapter. Sand Hill Road has gathered an army of talent to bring the vision to life and is currently recruiting 300 people to join The Espy family. One of the most noticeable changes will be the scope of the venue, with parts of the building people never knew existed opening up. Visitors who remember it as two levels will now be able to journey from the basement stage and iconic public bar to the expansive main bar, a garden terrace overlooking St Kilda Pier, the Gershwin Room, a fast-paced casual dining kitchen, the Mya Tiger Cantonese restaurant with accompanying cocktail bar, and The Ghost of Alfred Felton cocktail bar on the top floor. The latter is an homage to The Espy’s most notable resident, Alfred Felton, a wealthy chemist and art-lover
who lived and died at the seaside hotel. “We started delving into the history of Alfred and discovered what an incredible man he was,” Andy says. “We want to create something he would be proud of and to keep his story alive throughout the venue.” When Felton died, his bequest was left to various Victorian charities to support victims of domestic violence and The National Gallery of Victoria, which meant the gallery’s acquisition funds suddenly exceeded those of London’s National and Tate galleries combined. It has since purchased more than $2billion worth of art. Sand Hill Road’s vision is ultimately to create a pub where all Melburnians feel at home. “We’re not trying to please one market — that’s not The Espy,” Andy says. “We’re going all out to create a world-class cocktail bar, and then only 27 stairs away have 800 people looking out to the ocean, drinking beers and smashing pizzas or heading into a gig at one of the stages inside. Kate Sears speaks to Daniel Burt about growing up in Frankston, his comedy career and what it’s like writing for television shows such as the ABC’s Hard Quiz and CBS’s Late Show with David Letterman. What’s your education and experience? I graduated from Frankston High School, thankfully just before the advent of social media. I don’t want to romanticise the past but I long for the days of getting bullied face to face. While studying Media and Communications at Melbourne University I performed stand-up and hosted community TV and radio, and quickly got work writing TV comedy and have never looked back, mainly due to chronic neck issues. Early on I was writing for The Glass House and The Einstein Factor on ABC-TV, and lived in New York as intern in the writing department of the Late Show with David Letterman. I was Europe-based entertainment correspondent for The Age, a founding writer of The Project, The Weekly and senior writer for Hard Quiz — among many other gigs the memory of which I’ve deliberately repressed. Where are you living? After returning from Paris I now live in Prahran, taking in the sights and sounds and unfortunate smells of Chapel St — although page 102 of the Melway is my spiritual
home, and also my real home if for some reason I need to go back to live with my parents in Frankston. Could you tell us a little about your stand-up comedy show A Trip Down Memory Laneway? Melbourne is the love of my life. And like any romance I’m obsessed with its history and spend too much time stalking people from its past. It’s easy to overlook that Melbourne is a town full of hidden intrigue with oddballs and crazy incidents around every stencil-graffitied and urine-soaked corner. The show is a unique, comedic and nostalgic celebration of the city we love. What was it like being a senior writer for Hard Quiz? It’s deeply rewarding to get a sense of the breadth of intelligence and passion across the country, and it’s an honour to work with Tom Gleeson and such committed and gifted writers. With the variety of special subjects it’s easy to get lost down rabbit holes, investigating

the intricacies of Rolex watches or the history of the Freemasons. What other gig allows you to indulge in such disparate curiosities? Unfortunately, I now know more about The Goonies than I ever thought necessary. What do you love about Frankston? I like its remoteness from but accessibility to the city, and our proximity to the water — even if the definition of ‘water’ is stretched a bit at Kananook Creek. How was the Comedy Festival? I was very lucky to be doing a show about the history of Melbourne inside Tasma Terrace, a hidden room in a pop-up venue with a secret bar inside the National Trust. The only way the show could have been more Melbourne is if Sydney tried to steal it. I do talk a little bit about Frankston in the show, and people enjoy the fact that the station’s three-letter code is FKN. Just say that out loud. Even our abbreviation is trolling us.

REILLY STAPLETON In Conversation Casual chats with Peninsula people BY YAZMINE LOMAX
Mornington’s own Reilly Stapleton is an emerging singersongwriter who enthralls audiences with her emotional lyrics and soulful voice. Though busy gigging around Frankston, the Peninsula and farther afield, Reilly snatched some time to chat with us about her exciting career. Who or what inspires your songwriting? My Nana’s love for writing poetry helped me discover my own love for writing songs. Ever since I was little, my family was so supportive of my singing and always wanted to hear their favourite songs sung. My dad in particular loved it — he’s always been one of my biggest influences with what I write about because losing him was heartbreaking and hurt me more than I could ever explain, but I feel I have this way of letting him live on through my songs. What was it like to make your first music video, for your song That One’s On Me? So much fun! Jumping off The Pillars into freezing cold water was uncomfortable but I loved every moment! Michael (@shotbysadler) did such an amazing job on the video, and since it was such an emotional and personal song it had to be 100 per cent perfect before it was released.
What’s your proudest achievement? My participation award for the high school swimming, haha! It would have to be being accepted into the GRID series artist program. I felt so privileged to be one of eight artists involved in the program. I got to meet amazing people in the music industry, record a song, be mentored, and have a live performance video shot. Any crazy gig stories? There’s always something happening, whether it be Izaac — my poor drummer’s — drum pad not working halfway through a gig, leaving him tapping away in silence, or Ryan — my piano player — making up solos and playing the piano with his head. Every gig is crazy! Why do you love where you live and how does it inspire your work? I’ve lived here my entire life and I love it. I’m extremely lucky to live opposite the beach, therefore I’m always getting the peace and serenity of the ocean and beautiful sunsets. I love being able to live so close to my friends and family — it gives me such a sense of security, which makes exploring and building my music career a lot easier. This industry can be make or break and you’re always walking a tightrope, so it’s good to know I have amazing family and friends to catch me if I fall. Influenced by his father’s bedtime storytelling and the isolation of farm life, Garry Disher decided at a young age that he wanted to become a writer. He has now written more than 50 books and gone on to become one of Australia’s best-known authors. Garry resides near Balnarring, choosing to return to the country life after growing up on a farm in South Australia. “I like the rural lifestyle,” he says. “I like living on a dirt road away from built-up urban areas. The Mornington Peninsula gives me this with its beautiful varied landscape, and I’m always a short drive from a vineyard, a beach or the shops. If I need to go up to the city, I take the train from Frankston.” Garry gained a Bachelor’s Degree from Adelaide University and proceeded to work and travel. After returning home, he hit the books again and completed his Masters in Australian History at Monash University in Melbourne. He was also awarded a creative writing fellowship to Stanford University in California and taught creative writing in Melbourne for many years before becoming a full-time writer in 1988. Often drawing inspiration for his crime thrillers from newspapers, Garry says: “I think writers are alert to everything around them — something someone says, something they see, something they read in the newspaper. Sometimes you have to wait for several of these ideas to come together.” Garry credits meet-the-author sessions, workshops and festivals for assisting his career development. “The smaller festivals and talks are my preference because you can really engage with the audience and experience a friendlier atmosphere.” You can check out Garry’s extensive list of works at garrydisher.com BY DWAYNE ORANGE
Sick of paying through the nose for a taxi or an Uber? What about paying through the notes? Enter the Singalong Shuttle. Yep, those nifty Nordics have done it again. Remember our story in last month’s MPM on the Nordic pet supply chain that introduced “pawternity” leave for its employees? Well, how about this: the Singalong Shuttle — the world’s first taxi that you pay for by singing. The Singalong Shuttle was introduced for last month’s Ruisrock Festival in Finland by cleanenergy company Fortum, and the only payment it accepted was singing. Sounds fare enough to me. The service also only employed electric cars as part of Fortum’s bid to encourage greater use of clean energy and promote its Charge & Drive electric vehicle charging network, which it says is the largest in the Nordics with more than 2000 charging stations. “With Singalong Shuttle we want to show people in a joyful way how comfortable and easy it is to drive an electric car,” said Fortum’s brand manager, Jussi Mälkiä. “The silent electric cars make it possible to enjoy singing without background noise and emissions.” As with pawternity leave, I reckon the Singalong Shuttle is a cracking idea that would go down an absolute treat in Oz. I’ve even come up with a name and a concept: Karaoke Kabs, and each “kab” will have a list of tunes that passengers could choose from. It could include classic driving songs like Golden Earring’s Radar Love; songs with “car” or “taxi” in the title like The Beatles’ Baby, You Can Drive My Car or Joni Mitchell’s Big Yellow Taxi; even, at a pinch, songs by bands with “car” or “cab” in their names, like The Cars or Death Cab For Cutie ... well, OK, maybe not the last one. So come on all you clean-energy companies and electric car manufacturers, how about it? That’s my business name and concept, and if you’re the first cab off the rank I invite you to put in a bid for the whole (gear) box and (fluffy) dice. How about it? It’s going for a song.

Now you see me, now I live “Be Seen, Stay Alive.” That’s the slogan created by Arthur Ranken, a retired farmer and the inventor of the “SeeMe” Bicycle Safety Reflector System, a totally new concept in bicycle road safety.
The kits can be purchased through participating local school fundraising programs or online at seemereflectors.com, and Arthur hopes they will soon be available from retail outlets as well. But Arthur says he would like parents and schools to become involved and so encourage road safety conversations with children. Having now developed this bicycle safety reflector system, Arthur wants to encourage all cyclists to embrace it as part of the private bicycle road safety campaign he is initiating. “People should talk about it and use it. It does solve a problem and will make a big difference, just as seatbelts in cars made a difference.”
While driving at night, Arthur has almost struck three cyclists that he could not see against oncoming headlights because they had no illumination on their bikes at all. Angered and frustrated by this, he has now developed the “SeeMe” Bicycle Safety Reflector system that not only makes bicycles extremely visible in traffic at night, but also visible from all directions. “SeeMe” Safety Reflector Kits come with eight peel-off, self-adhesive, high-powered reflective segments and fitting instructions. Attached to the bicycle frame in a specified manner, they create a distinguishing “Block of 4” bicycle recognition image at both the back and the front of the bike. Arthur says that as well as making bikes with no illumination extremely visible at night, these reflectors also can double the visibility of bicycles that are already fitted with other lighting. Arthur says all cyclists have a “Duty of Care” to make their bicycles fully visible to all other road users at night for safety. “SeeMe” Reflectors do this extremely well and at a low cost — just $25 for a kit of eight pre-cut reflector segments and less for family packs.

“SeeMe” Reflectors also help drivers estimate the distance between them and any bike on the road at night more accurately than fast flashing bicycle lights allow. They also have no batteries, moving parts or plastic mounts to break, they use the latest and brightest overseas reflective technology available, and they come in yellow because the reflectivity of yellow is about five times brighter than traditional red. “SeeMe” Reflectors are also a must for mountain bike enthusiasts. Should a cyclist become lost or injured during off-road cycling activities and darkness falls, these reflectors will make the lost bike very much easier to find by search parties with spotlights. The trucks of the 19th century Transporting heavy cargo in the early days of the Colony of Victoria was a major problem. Wagons or drays drawn by horses or bullocks moved slowly over the roads, which were little more than tracks. The quicker and cheaper solution was to use small sailing vessels for most transport. Until the building of the railway lines, and for some time after, many small schooners, ketches and cutters operated around the coast. Most of these could carry as much as two or three large wagons, were managed usually by a crew of two and, under sail, covered the distance much more quickly than over land. Recently in the Mornington Leader, Peter Mitchell wrote of the limeburners of the Mornington Peninsula. Lime was used in the mortar that held together the bricks and stone of
Melbourne’s new buildings. It was, however, a dangerous cargo because it heated if water came in contact with it and this could cause a fire. One of the vessels of the lime fleet was the topsail schooner Rosetta. Built of red gum in 1851 with a length of 14m, she carried nearly 500 bags of lime. In October 1875 she was almost lost to a fire caused by a leak in the hull. Fortunately, the fire was put out when the cargo was removed. The fire brigade attended but was unable to use water, which would have made the situation worse. Lime was only one of the many cargoes carried around Port Phillip by small sailing vessels in the early days. Firewood for the bakers’ ovens, shell grit for the glass works, wool, hides, and wattle bark for the leather tanners were all brought to Melbourne in small sailing
vessels. On their return passages they carried many of the daily needs of the residents of the Peninsula. Pope’s Eye, or ‘The Fort’, between Portsea and Queenscliff was built using bluestone blocks carried aboard these same small sailing vessels. Named after a naval officer, work began in 1888 but ceased when advances in gunnery made it unnecessary. These little vessels were truly the trucks of their time. Last year, 2187 people in Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula heard the words “You have cancer”. So this September help Frankston and Peninsula Relay For Life celebrate its 15th year of raising money to find a cure for cancer so others in our community don’t have to hear those words. Frankston and Peninsula Relay For Life is an overnight team walk that has raised more than $1.2 million for Cancer Council Victoria’s research, support, information and prevention programs. The relay celebrates cancer survivors and carers, remembers loved ones taken by cancer, and includes activities that promote ways in which we can all fight back against cancer. Relay For Life is for everyone, no matter your age or fitness level. This year’s Relay For Life will be held on the weekend

of September 22-23 at Ballam Park, with teams taking turns to walk or run the athletics track. It begins with an opening ceremony at 4pm on Saturday as cancer survivors and carers take centre stage to do the opening lap before enjoying a special afternoon tea. At 8pm a candlelight ceremony is held to celebrate loved ones who have survived or succumbed to cancer. Candle bags with personal messages line the track and light the way for the overnight walk. Midnight heralds the start of the 42.2km marathon for the super-fit; for those not quite at that level, there’s a half-marathon or team marathon starting at 1am. The closing ceremony at 11am on Sunday wraps up the event, with organisers thanking the volunteers and the community for making Relay For Life possible. When not walking, participants can enjoy the relay atmosphere and festivities, with entertainers, games, team activities and food vendors to keep everybody going for the 19 hours. Dromana Primary School students have transformed a graffiti eyesore into a work of art. The school’s Prep students created Indigenous animal oil crayon drawings in workshops with Jill Anderson, from Mornington Peninsula Shire Council’s arts and culture team, that now adorn a freeway underpass at McCulloch St. Their Grade 6 buddies recorded the Preps’ stories that accompany the 12 artworks, and an eBook with all the artworks and stories will be available via the council and school websites. School principal Bruce Mesley said: “Being involved in this unique project highlights our school’s connection to place and allows the opportunity for our Prep and Grade 6 students to create a link to the first landholders and the
magnificent environment in which we reside.” The project was a joint initiative of the council, the school and VicRoads in response to repeated graffiti at the underpass. “This area is regularly used by cars, pedestrians and students heading towards Dromana Primary School,” said Mayor Bryan Payne. “Now anyone passing by can enjoy artwork designed by local students as they make their way through Dromana.” Cr Antonella Celi said: “We’re so pleased to see the creativity of local school children on display to the local community and visitors to the area. These wonderful artworks show how arts and culture play an important role in encouraging a creative and inspired community.” Cr Simon Brooks said: “This is a great collaboration which has resulted with not only beautiful artwork in Dromana, but has created great relationships between students of
diverse ages and abilities.” Cr Frank Martin said: “This project is part of the shire’s arts and culture strategy by creating a more connected and vital community through arts. good enough for Mum Back in 1983, Kevin Hickman was a former policeman turned private detective. He was asked to investigate an aged care home fire in Christchurch, New Zealand and Kevin did not like what he saw. “The fire was in an old villa and there were four people to a room all with shared toilets,’’ Kevin recalls. “To me it was crazy, the standards were so poor. But that’s how aged care homes were in those days.’’ Kevin would never dream of putting his Mother into a place like that if she needed to go into care. “I thought, what would I want for Mum?” “I’d want a single room, with an

Most clients who have IPL tolerate the treatment well. The sensation is likened to the snapping of a few rubber bands at one time. The treatments are designed to give visible results over multiple visits, varying from one
to three over a few months. Almost all clients see the improvement after the first treatment. For some people the side effects of the IPL may include swelling or redness of the area, which may last a few days. Darker brown pigmentation usually washes off after seven days, and make-up can be used to cover this. Remember, IPL is a procedure with outstanding results, not a relaxing facial, giving our clients a more youthful you. Remember your body also. This treatment is suitable for face, neck, chest, arms, legs, backs etc. (remove those freckles). While becoming a more youthful you, remember skin tags and fibromas (Adele says barnacles). Free science activities at Coolart Calling all curious children, nature-loving adults and adventurous families: become platypus protectors, search for bird habitats or join an ecology tour of the Coolart Wetlands and Homestead reserve as part of National Science Week 2018. The third annual Science in the Park: Wildlife Counts event will be the focus of a variety of free and accessible science activities for all ages on Sunday, August 12, from 10am to 4pm at the Coolart Wetlands and Homestead in Somers. The event will be opened by a Welcome to Country Smoking Ceremony by an elder from the Bunurong Land Council. PrimeSCI! Swinburne University of Technology, along with Parks Victoria, EPA Victoria, Birdlife Mornington Peninsula, Friends of Coolart, and many other organisations will host science presentations, tours of the reserve and fun handson science activities. The science seminars on the day will feature keynote speakers Ian Temby and Dr Andrea Hinwood, Victoria’s first Chief Environmental Scientist. Tours of the reserve will include an ecology tour with Gidja Walker. Leading up to the event, the Mornington Peninsula Astronomical Society has an astro-photography exhibition in the homestead. Ranger Jenny says: “It’s great to be able to work with PrimeSCI! Swinburne University of Technology to bring this event to Coolart for National Science Week. One of the most important things in managing our parks is research and monitoring — to understand what we have and how we are going to protect it. Gathering this information can not only be done by professional scientists but also the community using ‘citizen science’. This event will be a chance for people to see how science is used in our parks and how they can be involved.” National Science Week is Australia’s annual opportunity to meet scientists, discuss the hot topics, do science and celebrate its cultural and economic impact on society, and runs from August 11-19. Sears, delves into the history of the Pink Ladies, Peninsula Health’s longest running volunteer group, and explains how her greatgrandmother started it all in April 1968.
Edna Vincent joined Frankston Hospital in 1951 as a member of the Frankston Community Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, a group of doctors’ wives that focused on fundraising. Her association with the hospital began in November 1941 when her husband, Dr Frank Vincent, became a member of its founding committee. In 1952, Edna became president of the auxiliary. While dining with friends, an American guest suggested to Edna the idea of a hospital auxiliary with volunteer workers. After putting the concept forward to the hospital matron, she was refused until 1968, when the matron at the time, Jean Sutcliffe, asked Edna for some voluntary helpers. Lightening the workload of nurses and brightening up the lives of patients became a passion for Edna and her merry band of volunteers. Fast-forward to 1982, and Edna had 200 or so dedicated members and had succeeded in raising millions of dollars for the hospital via raffles, operating two hospital kiosks, hiring televisions, street collections, stalls and an annual fete. The money raised then funded building projects and patient care equipment. Celebrating its 50th year in service this year, this new auxiliary became fondly known as the Pink Ladies Issue 81, AUGUST 2018
Auxiliary because the 15 founding members were given a distinctive cheerful uniform consisting of a floral pink dress, with white shoes and later a pink cape. These chirpy ladies in pink would help carry out services within the hospital to assist staff and patients with tasks such as folding linen, delivering newspapers, escorting new patients to their wards, delivering and maintaining patients’ flowers and so much more. Their help was truly invaluable. Edna was awarded the MBE in 1964 for her outstanding services to the community. The Pinkies have also enjoyed visits from premiers and health ministers, and won the 2014 Victorian Premier’s Volunteer Award in the Metropolitan Volunteer Team of the Year Icon category, and a 2010 Minister for Health Award for Volunteering in the Most Outstanding Team Achievement Award category. Edna spread the concept of Pink Ladies to at least 15 other hospitals and remained president of the Pink Ladies’ Auxiliary for 31 years until her death in 1999. Frankston Hospital has been able to continually grow and provide a high standard of patient care to the community thanks to Edna’s band of volunteers from past to present. Their dedication, support and tireless efforts are truly amazing, and they’ve raised a remarkable $8 million since day dot. The current president is Pauline Ellerby, and the Frankston Pink Ladies has 68 members who focus on the running of the kiosk as their main source of income. Get your mental health in a positive state mental health; noun 1. a person’s condition with regard to their psychological and emotional well-being. Question: Is “mental health” something that you can actually struggle with? I hear that phrase a lot and understand what people mean when they say it, but is it actually valid or do we need to change the way we talk about mental health? Let’s unpack it … You can struggle with mental health issues like types of depression and anxiety and how they make you feel. You can struggle with mental illnesses like bipolar and schizophrenia and the impact that has on your life. These things are mental health issues and illnesses, not mental health per se. You can struggle to manage the day-today challenges that life throws at you and think your way into many problems — but once again, not mental health. There are so many factors that influence someone’s mental health — diet, environment, conditioning, cognitive processes etc. Aren’t these the things we struggle with? Thoughts stuck in the past or overthinking the future. Unable to express or communicate what we’re feeling.
Hypersensitive and taking things personally. Reliant on things when we can’t cope. Living in fear of the unknown. Blowing things out of proportion. Looking at all the negatives. All of these lead to the condition of your mental health deteriorating. On the other hand … Staying present. Communicating openly and clearly. Developing resiliency. Managing and attending to “life” as it happens. Trusting your abilities and being excited about future opportunities. Keeping things in perspective. Focusing on the positives. Practising these leads to improved happiness and well-being, meaning the condition of your mental health is in a positive state. So maybe that’s what we actually mean: I’m struggling to keep the condition of my mental health in a place where I feel good as a result. Weight loss shouldn’t be difficult if it is done correctly. Here are five rules to ensure that all the hard work you are putting in pays off. HYDRATION — make sure that hydration is a priority by aiming to consume at least 2L of water every day. Thirst is commonly misinterpreted as hunger, leading to the consumption of more food than needed, when really a glass of water may be all your body is asking for. If you feel that you are hungry, have a glass of water first, wait 30 minutes and see if the hunger has subsided. EXERCISE — even though diet is the key to losing weight, exercise also plays a role. So, to ensure that your body is happy and healthy, aim to move your body for at least 30 minutes most days. This can be a run, brisk walk or even some yoga or Pilates. The combination of cardiovascular exercise and resistance exercise will give the best results, as the cardiovascular exercise burns fat whereas the resistance builds muscle mass, which increases metabolism. Daily exercise also improves mood and increases energy and metabolism for the day. DON’T CUT OUT FOODS — if weight loss is the goal, yet you are depriving yourself of your favourite foods, it won’t work. Rather than cutting out chocolate altogether, it is better to include a small amount and enjoy it, or rather than trying a NO carb diet, try a LOW carb diet so your body is still receiving all the key macronutrients and will be less likely to crave certain foods. MIND YOUR PORTIONS — portion control is key. Society tells us that we should eat more through serving size at a restaurant to serving size on a packet, even the size of plates affect the portion we consume. Try using a side plate or reducing the meat or carbohydrate portion of your meal and increasing the low starchy salad or vegetables. DON’T SKIP MEALS — the longer you go without eating, the hungrier you will be, so rather than skipping breakfast and lunch then eating your whole daily intake in a few hours in the evening, try eating 3-5 small well-balanced meals throughout the day to keep your metabolism going. Start each day with breakfast to kick-start your metabolism and boost energy levels for the day. Renowned weaver and awardwinning artist Regina Pilawuk Wilson, from the tiny homeland community of Peppimenarti, 320km west of Darwin, is heading to the Peninsula’s Whistlewood Gallery to launch an exhibition of new paintings, weavings and works on paper from her art centre of Durrmu. Most of the works, whether brilliantly coloured or more subtle in hue, are based on the pattern of fishnet weaving stiches called Syaw and the dots used in body paint design called Durrmu. Regina and fellow artists have just returned from a highly acclaimed visit to the US where their work is featuring in two leading exhibitions at the Kluge Ruhe Collection, University of Virginia, and Debra & Dennis Scholl’s collection of Aboriginal women artists at the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. the exhibition featured a collection of premium Indigenous pieces including works on paper and canvas plus a standout range of jewellery. Acrylics, earth pigments, woven sculpture, silver jewellery and inkjet prints merged to initiate conversation and debate, while a presentation by Susan McCulloch from
McCulloch and McCulloch Whistlewood Gallery and Tallara Gray of Baluk Arts highlighted the importance of Indigenous art groups such as Baluk on the Mornington Peninsula. Festival returns as the Main event
The Mornington Peninsula’s world-class food, wine and performing arts will take centre stage in October when Main Street Mornington Festival returns for its 23rd year. The festival continues to showcase the art and soul of the Peninsula and everything the region has to offer, and already a cracking line-up of performers is taking shape. Joel Reed and Them Blues Cats, Malcura, Erik Parker, Sam O’Connell, Matt Katsis, Diddey Reyes 59 Rockers, Super Saloon and The Midwayers have been confirmed, and there are plenty more to be announced as the countdown to the festival continues. Peninsula Folk Club and Balnarring Musos will also be hosting a performance area, and for the second time at the festival the Gloriana Pin-Up Queen competition will take place on the Albert St stage. Main Street Mornington Festival is a wonderful way to kick off the festival season. It is a family-friendly, free community event that incorporates a wide range of music genres, local produce, food, Peninsula wines and market stalls. With seven stages and performance areas, a children’s arcade, roving performers, activities and more than 70 food and wine vendors, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Pick up your phones or pens and lock in September 23, people. The Mornington Running Festival is back bigger and better than ever and this time around there’s no stopping this juggernaut of an event. Launched in 2014, this foot-pounding, heart-thumping, fun-filled occasion supports the fantastic work of charity partner beyondblue, which helps raise awareness of anxiety and depression. This is a community-first event that delivers excitement, action and a way to assist people who are struggling with mental health issues.
BY LIZ ROGERS The scenic course allows racegoers the chance to run exclusively along The Esplanade of the Mornington Peninsula, while each race begins and ends at Mornington Park. The Parc 21.1km half-marathon heads south along The Esplanade to Stanley Cres (just past Mount Martha Village) and back again. The 10km run follows the same course, but the turnaround is at Craigie Rd, while the Bonaccorde 5km run follows the same course and turns around about 500m past Strachans Rd. There’s a 1km dash for kids, too, and parents are encouraged to run with them to really enjoy the experience.

Musk Cottage garden open for September weekend

A cross between The Office and a cage fight, Cockfight is a game of comical one-upmanship that builds to moments of emotive impact, where generational truths are exposed and unpacked. Domestic tourists spend big on dining Data from the most recent National Visitor Survey has shown an increase in domestic tourists’ overnight spend on restaurant and takeaway meals, both in terms of the dollar amount and as a proportion of overall expenditure. For the year ending March 2018, domestic tourists spent $10.6 billion on meals from restaurants and takeaway food outlets, up from $9.7 billion for the corresponding 12 months in 2017. This represented percentage growth of 9.3 per cent year-on-year. The total expenditure on restaurant and takeaway meals represented roughly 16.3 per cent of the overall overnight spend by domestic tourists of $65.1 billion for the year ending March 2018. This has also increased from 15.8 per cent for the year ending March 2017. Restaurant & Catering Australia chief executive Juliana Payne said the increasing overnight expenditure on restaurant and takeaway meals reflected the changing priorities of domestic tourists when planning their trips away. “Each time we see a new set of visitor survey figures come out, the expenditure on restaurant and takeaway meals continues to rise both as a dollar figure and as a proportion. After accommodation, domestic tourists’ next biggest expense item for overnight trips is restaurant and takeaway meals,” Juliana said. “When you look at the figures for day-trippers, the proportion spent on restaurant and takeaway meals is even higher at 22.9 per cent. This data confirms that dining out at cafes and restaurants is one of the biggest priorities for domestic tourists alongside choosing a

Nationally, however, it’s a much different story. According to Seafood Industry Australia, a staggering 70 per cent of seafood eaten in Australia is imported, and while mandatory country of origin labelling on all seafood sold in retail stores came into force on July 1, it’s not required in restaurants, cafes, pubs or fish and chip shops. SIA wants that to change. Chief executive Jane Lovell welcomes the changes to country of origin labelling in retail because they provide consumers with clear information on where their food comes from, which will allow them to make informed purchasing decisions — “but retail is only half of the story”. At the supermarket and when you buy fresh fish, by law all seafood now has to be labelled with its country of origin, Ms Lovell said. But when you go out to dine, there is no obligation to label where the seafood you are about to order and eat comes from. “The new laws don’t apply to food sold in places like restaurants, cafes, pubs, clubs and fish and chip shops. We want to see these labelling laws extended to food service. SIA can’t understand what the difference is. The government believes consumers have a right to know where their seafood comes in retail; why not when they are eating out? “Australians love their seafood, and next to freshness the country of origin is the second most influential factor for consumers choosing which seafood they buy. Twenty years ago almost all the seafood Australians ate was Australian seafood. Most assume it still is. But people are flabbergasted when they find out 70 per cent of seafood eaten in Australia is imported.” Ms Lovell said SIA was not vilifying imported seafood but believes consumers should be provided with the same information in food service that they have in retail. “Two Senate inquiries have called for this loophole to be closed. More than 86,000 consumers signed petitions asking for country of origin labelling to become compulsory for seafood sold in the food service industry. Yet nothing has changed.”

Riesling is not a variety that is synonymous with the Mornington Peninsula. However, there are some excellent examples to try with varying styles. Interestingly, Australian riesling is usually bone-dry, with extreme examples tasting a bit like lime juice, but traditionally in European areas like Germany and Alsace in France, wines have some sweetness and taste a bit more like pineapple or apricot. Below we have an interesting cross-section from very dry to medium-bodied to off-dry (some sugar).
Paradigm Hill 2017 Riesling $35 Starting with the driest of the three, Paradigm Hill is a premium small producer concentrating on just four varieties grown on their estate. It is worth a visit if you love chatting wine and want to meet some truly passionate industry people. If you like a dry riesling, this is an excellent choice. With the aforementioned
lime characteristic, this also tastes a bit of green apples and has a lovely perfume. I could definitely see this being consumed on a hot day, sitting on a deck with some nice seafood. If you had some patience you could also age this to soften the acid a bit.
Rahona Valley 2018 Kaye’s Block Riesling $25 Rahona Valley is a little-known producer that is doing some amazing things. My wife and I recently visited their newly renovated cellar door and enjoyed a tasting with Toby and Dianne, the owners. Wow, what a lineup! If you love a cellar door visit and are looking for something new, put this at the top of your list (go for the pinot noir and reasonable prices). This riesling sits more in the middle — fuller-bodied, less acid and a bit more fruit and roundness. It was very
new when we tried it but it will be a fantastic wine when it is released around Cup Day. Looking forward to getting our hands on some more.
Rahona Valley 2016 Kaye’s Block Riesling $25 Many people associate “sweet wines” with the fortified wines of Rutherglen and South Australia. There is, however, a whole spectrum to levels of sweetness. If you aren’t necessarily into sweet wines, this is a great one to try. Slightly sweet and still with the nice acid a riesling should have, this is a style you might drink in Europe. Something really interesting to try for the uninitiated. I only have three wines to review here, but they also have an even sweeter late-harvest riesling too, so if you are a riesling lover wanting to discover new styles, this is a great place to come.

How long have you been creating delicious cakes and pastries? Since 1987, when Brendon’s Cakes first opened. We set out to make great-tasting products fresh daily and we believe we still do. How did you start baking? Interest in the industry came from going into work with Mum at a Mornington bakery as a boy. Unable to get an apprenticeship locally, I moved to Sunshine and rode my pushbike to work for my 2 to 10am shift. I am a fully qualified pastry cook and baker. Have you created new recipes or have they been handed down? Both, actually. I was most fortunate to have a number of oldworld recipes passed down to me, many of which I still use today. But largely a combination of old recipes re-invented has often been the most successful method. What’s the day look like for a baker? Our bake house team starts around 1am. Bread is first on the list, followed by sponges, vanilla slices, pies, pastries etc. Cream cakes, biscuits. The list is long, so production generally continues
‘til 3 or 4pm as we start to prepare for the next day. What’s your favourite thing to make and why? Sausage rolls, because working with pastry particularly is my favourite. I just find great satisfaction and enjoyment creating products I am proud of. I eat them daily and never tire of them. What sells the most at Brendon’s Cakes? Pastries. Pies. Large cream sponges. Individual cakes. Our famous Killer Vanilla slice. We have served around 1.5 million customers in our 30-year history. Who works with you? My wife, Vanessa, does most of the paperwork. Our three daughters have worked in the business since they were young, and Mum was one of only two unpaid staff members when we first opened. The Brendon’s Cakes family/team members are essential to our continuing success. I have four fully qualified pastry cooks on staff and a dedicated host of customer service team members who make us what we are today. We’ve trained over 20 apprentices and been a two-time gold medallist at the prestigious National Great Aussie Pie competition.

Common examples are planting basil and marigolds around tomato plants, sowing onions or radishes with carrots, and the popular ‘three sisters’ — corn, beans and squash, but there are many other planting combinations that work well in the garden. Men’s Sheds make a real difference in people’s lives, providing a friendly space where all men of our community can gather together to be safe, be creative and feel supported. These groups are all about inclusiveness and interaction The Mount Martha Men’s Shed at the New Peninsula Community Centre in Craigie Rd has three small sheds on site with a membership of about 70 men with various skills. Changes are afoot to this Men’s Shed where members get together to help various organisations in the community Peter Harris from the Shed explains: “We started the Shed in 2013 with four to six retired men and from there it started to grow and continues to do so. Each Men’s Shed is unique and we in Mount Martha Men’s Shed are very community minded and find working with various volunteer organisations, schools, and other Sheds very rewarding. We finance our Shed through local projects, barbecues, and applying for grants. Our recent Buddy Bench program — one part has been completed and unveiled

with great success at the Mornington Park Primary School — was supported by the shire council with a grant of $5000 with ongoing buddy benches being installed at Osbourne, Crib Point and Somers primary schools. “We are now starting a program refurbishing approximately 70 bicycles with a grant of $1000 from the shire council, and now we are running out of space for our members and so we have applied for grants from the shire council and the Victorian and Federal governments to build a new Shed. The New Peninsula Baptist Church has made land available to build the Shed at the Craigie Rd site. This new Shed will provide for all men of the community a safe, creative and supportive environment.” The Mount Martha Men’s Shed is open Tuesday and Thursday from 8.30am-1.30 pm. Ritchies says NO to single-use plastic bags You may have noticed a change at the checkout in Ritchies: hessian carriers, thick reusable bags, lined chiller holdalls and the lack of stacks of flimsy single-use plastics bags clogging up the supermarket purchasing arteries.
Ritchies’ national advertising and promotions manager and company director James Cameron explains. “This policy push has really been driven by our customers and the phase-out of lightweight plastic bags already happening across the country. Plastic bag bans have been implemented or are pending in all states and territories except NSW. It is time-appropriate
and our customers have been at the forefront of letting us know that this is what they want and expect. It hasn’t taken long for people to remember to bring their own reusable bags with them.” The checkout is not the only place that Ritchies Supermarkets’ plastics policies are changing.
