Brooke Hogan, 24, is one of Australia’s top models, she’s from Frankston and she has just been named the Female Ambassador for the 2017 Formula One Rolex Australian Grand Prix (March 23 – 26)! This ‘girl next door’ shot to prominence when she appeared on Australia’s Next Top Model 2013 and she now has more than half a million followers on social media. She spoke with Mornington Peninsula Magazine about her meteoric rise, her new role and her love for Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula (for more on the Grand Prix and to purchase tickets go to www.grandprix.com.au/tickets). You have more than half a million followers on social media and a skyrocketing career. We love that you are from Frankston. Please tell us where you grew up and what you love about the area. Oh thank you! Yes, I am a Frankston girl born and bred and I love it. My parents still live there now and I love going home to visit them! I went to Ballam Park Primary School and McClelland College in Frankston. I have always loved living on the Peninsula, they say home is where the heart is and I believe that 100 per cent.

There are so many things I LOVE and the list is continuing to grow! There are some great new little cafés and shops but my favourite thing about the area would have to be that it is where my family are. Do you still spend time on the Mornington Peninsula? Yes, I do spend a lot of time here. My family still live there and I go home quite a lot. My boyfriend Myles lives in Portsea so I would say I spend 50 per cent of my time in Melbourne and the other 50 on the Peninsula! Favourite café, restaurant and beach on the Mornington Peninsula to hang out at and why? I have two favourite cafés - 6 nutrition in Frankston, they have THE BEST acai bowls ever and also Store Fifteen in Mornington - really healthy and organic foods with delicious smoothies! Favourite restaurants would be DOC in Mornington and Hotel

Sorrento in Sorrento. Favourite beach would be Shelley Beach in Portsea, the water is super clean, there is a beautiful view on the walk down, a little pier to walk down as well and it isn’t too crowded (unless it’s peak summer time). Do you use Peninsula locations in your Instagram photos? Yes all the time! What does it mean to be named the 2017 Formula One Rolex Australian Grand Prix Female Ambassador? Tell us a little about this amazing role! I am so excited to be named Ambassador for Grand Prix for 2017. It is a role that I have had my eye on for quite a while now and I am over the moon that the opportunity has come around. The Grand Prix is such an iconic time for Australia and we are so lucky to host such a prestigious event here in Melbourne. It’s going to be an action packed exciting few days and I
am thrilled to showcase Melbourne in all its glory! You were at the Portsea Polo, please tell us a little about that. We photographed you there :) Yes, I remember that photograph! The polo is up there with one of my favourite times in Melbourne! Being close to home makes it even better. As much as it’s all about the sport, it’s also about such a great atmosphere with your friends! What is your message to young women, particularly local girls, who might wish to dream big and follow in your footsteps? I could write an essay on this haha. My advice would be, don’t doubt yourself. If you want something, you need to work as hard as you can to get there. You can’t just sit around waiting for something to happen, it doesn’t work like that. Figure out what it is you want to do, get up and go get it !

Pam Hawkes is reminiscing while on her way to Wagga to see one of her horses run. She doesn’t give it much hope, but she saw it born five years ago and wild horses couldn’t keep her away. “It doesn’t matter whether it’s at Mornington on a midweek race or Wagga tomorrow, it’s just fantastic. We get just as much thrill watching her run as we did watching Black Caviar.” It has been almost four years since Black Caviar ran her last race – the TJ Smith Stakes at Randwick. It was her 25th win from 25 starts and her 15th Group 1 win – both records – and her brilliant career captivated the racing world and delighted the group of lifetime friends who for years had talked about owning a racehorse. “We used to go to the Melbourne Cup and we’d say ‘Gee, we should get a horse together; it’d be a lot of fun’.” One day, with Pam stuck on her vegetable farm at Boneo, the others called her from the Murray River houseboat on which they’d all stay and said they were going to buy a horse. “I said ‘I’m in but I only want a fast one’, so they took me at my word and got a fast one.” The eight syndicate members each suggested three names for the filly and everyone voted; Pam’s suggestion – inspired by her love of caviar - got up. “You’ve got to have a catchy name for people to take notice of, and it worked. We’re very fond of champagne as well and you always hope you’ll have an excuse to celebrate; we haven’t had that much caviar because, by gum, it’s expensive but we’ve had plenty of opportunities to celebrate with champagne.” Pam’s love of horses goes way back to growing up on a farm in Keysborough, where she used to watch her grandfather’s Clydesdales plough the fields and ride the Shetland he bought for her, so it’s no surprise she saw all Black Caviar’s races and went to every trial. One of her favourites is the Lightning Stakes at Flemington in February 2013, the mare’s return from injury sustained during her triumph at Ascot eight months earlier. “We’d virtually written her off; we left Ascot thinking we’ve got a brood mare. But she just jumped and ran and broke the track record and just blew everybody away. It was just fantastic.” Another highlight was the TJ Smith at Randwick in April 2011, when she made up seven lengths on Hay List, the secondhighest rated sprinter in the world. “It was phenomenal.” The same group of friends are now racing Black Caviar’s first foal, Oscietra, who ran third in her first start on New Year’s Day at Flemington, but they still occasionally visit the grand dam and get regular updates from the stud where she is in foal again. “The last one we got was to say how magnificent she’s looking and she’s never looked better.” Pam Hawkes will address the Frankston Business Network in the Mornington Racing Club’s Gunnamatta Room on March 8, 11.30am-2.30pm. #SocialMedia and defamation # think before you post, look before you link Social media connects us like no time in history. Most of the 500 million active users of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram spend time each day smiling at beach shots, first day of school tears and pithy memes. And who hasn’t had the hidden pleasure of playing “where are they now” with long lost friends or that first high school crush? Yesterday’s media barons are no longer the gate keepers of public opinion and expression. We’re all publisher’s now — free to air our grievances and political, cultural and social views at light speed. Almost all posts in this digital conversation are well meant and heartfelt but some can occasionally veer into the area of defamation. Defamation occurs when you post words, videos, photos or illustrations that expose someone to ridicule, lowering their personal and or professional reputation and causing others to shun or avoid them. In this highly connected world a defamatory post can go viral in minutes, giving rise to crippling damages claims.
In 2015, a WA woman was ordered to pay $12,500 to her ex for Facebook comments alleging he’d subjected her to 18 years of domestic violence. A 20-year old student had to pay $105,000 in damages for tweeting that his high school music teacher caused his father’s poor health. In 2016, a man sued a couple for a community page post containing his image, and an accusation that he was “prone to manic outbursts”. Their legal defence cost $80,000. So, before you send out that barbed post, we’d urge you to follow two simple rules: 1. Make sure whatever you post is true. 2. If you think it’ll make people think less of someone, leave them open to being ridiculed, shunned or despised, or hurt their business, trade or profession — take a deep breath and step back from that screen! High expectations for our students and ourselves One of the defining features of an education at Woodleigh is that it is a very real experience. Each child comes here with different knowledge and they teach each other, learning that everyone has strengths,” she explains. “For example, one of our little girls loves packing up and some struggle with working as a team so she is showing them what teamwork means. Public art. What does it mean? Well, the thing is, it means something different to everyone who views it. Touches it. Engages with it. Public art is there for a reason. To evoke conversation and to make our sometimes shades of grey world kick up its heels, pull up its skirt and shout out THERE’S BEAUTY AND COLOUR UNDER HERE – LET’S CELEBRATE IT! Let’s tell its story. Let’s link our community’s lines and connect through it. German born artist Ralf Kempken understands what it means to produce large-scale public art that gets tongues wagging. A Kempken work is built to last, not only because of the materials he uses, but because of the story it continues to tell long after the installation process has ceased. His stencil and screen monster size work can be viewed out the back of the iconic Dimmeys building in Richmond, at the West Footscray Railway Station (Changing Face Steel Screens), the Regional Rail Link Project in Sunshine and now in Mount Eliza opposite Manyung Gallery with the hanging of two huge screen printed works on the

Telstra building in Mount Eliza Way. “We all see things differently. I’m interested in our changing perceptions on how we view our environment. A lot of my work focusses on shadow and light. The children of the Depression can be seen from a distance at the Richmond site, but when you get up close, the images jump out of the spaces created by the mesh, shadow and reflective light. The work in Mount Eliza represents my fascination with the concept that cities can be one and the same and that the people in them are the same yet different. I love putting streets together and reimagining them.” (I suggest he should have been a town planner?) “Patterns and how we piece things together fascinates me. I love the fact that these screens will fade over time and yet remain beautiful.” And beautiful, subtle and simply stunning is what these two works are. Over the course of our conversation from the seat in front of the Telstra building, the reaction to this art installation is both emotional and exciting. “When Sharyn Wemyss-Smith from Manyung Gallery Group approached me to be part of this project I jumped at it,” Kempken says. Get your paddling arms in shape and get on board an event that’s about to redefine the concept of surfing for a good cause. On Saturday, April 1, the Mornington Peninsula surfing community will host a unique surf competition at Shoreham with a simple goal – to raise money for the Disabled Surfing Association’s Mornington Peninsula Branch (DSAMP). It doesn’t get much more community than this. Registrations are open and excitement is building, with the major prize a $2000 travel voucher from JetStar. All funds raised at the inaugural DSAMP Champs event will help fund DSAMP’s two annual events for surfers with disabilities, held at Pt Leo. The DSAMP Champs is no ordinary surfing competition. It’s designed to create the ultimate level playing field for

all competitors. As organiser Rod Jones from The FirstReef Project team (essentially an organised group of Peninsula surfers with big hearts, looking for innovative ways to support surfers with disabilities) explains, all entrants will surf on identical boards – 10’ soft longboards - and wait til you hear about how you can win! “There are some very good surfers down here who would dominate the competition so we were very keen right from the start to make sure it wasn’t a normal competition,” Rod explains. “We’ve come up with a fun concept where it’s a team competition, each team has four surfers, and so long as all team members paddle out, catch one wave and stand up, your team qualifies for the prize draw.” So yes, the winning team, plus second and third prizes, will ultimately be drawn from a hat. Maladiction Longboarders (a club of devoted surfers from the Mornington Peninsula - www.maladiction.org) came
up with the prize draw idea and will run the event; Jetstar is on board as the major sponsor via its Community Grant Fund; Trigger Bros are donating the second prize (a Trigger Bros Surf Pack) and third prize is dinner for four at Stillwater at Crittenden, donated by Peninsula Speech Pathology Services. There are also a bunch of fabulous and fun minor prizes: for the highest team score, longest noseride, best wipeout, most outrageous manœuvre, best costumes, paddle race winner and beach volleyball winner. Shrek and Kung-Fu Panda will light up Rosebud’s Foreshore Live Under the Big Top in March and April this year at an Australian-first exhibition of some of DreamWorks Animation’s best known characters in a large-scale lantern experience. Lights by DreamWorks – The Experience is an interactive, walkthrough experience for all ages and is set to run for 30 days and attract more than 150,000 local and international visitors who will marvel at more than 100 of DreamWorks’ characters brought to life. Modelled on the traditional Chinese Lantern Festival, Lights by DreamWorks features huge illuminated figures familiar to the fans of the Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, How to Train Your Dragon and Madagascar movies. “It’s very exciting to be able to bring our wonderful lantern experience to Australia for the very first time. We’re looking forward to seeing eyes young and old light up when they experience our large scale illuminated characters for the very first time in such a beautiful part of Victoria,” said DreamWorks Consumer Products Country Director Jo Pascoe.

Destiny’s descendant - the self-deprecating Mr Walden BY LIZ ROGERS
Words flow freely with the 71-year-old Mal Walden. His “self-defecating” (yes, you’ve got to “rubbish yourself”) wit merges with a wealth of experience to create an enthralling discourse that bypasses his public persona and makes you feel at ease. Many of us grew up with him. Many of us loved watching Mal’s Melbourne (Eyewitness News’ human interest story segment). Either way, he’s a British-born Frankston lad who somehow wandered into our living rooms most nights via the gogglebox. Since retiring from Channel 10 in 2013 – he prefers the term ‘stepping down’ – Mal’s life hasn’t slowed. His memoir The News Man – 60 Years of Television was published by Brolga last year and he’s already writing his next book. Retiring my ass! This ‘ginger’ son of English immigrants who landed in Coogee Ave, Frankston, in 1952 keeps his ears and
eyes wide open, watching and waiting. Fifty-three years is a long time to be in an industry that can make or break you, but this journalist, writer and newsreader has survived “by being open to opportunity and in the right place at the right time. I believe life is pre-destined”. The young Mal Walden won a ‘secret sound’ radio competition when he was 15. Heading into the station to collect his prize, he was hit with a “bombshell”. “I’d been tinkering with crystal and valve set radios for years. I picked up the wrong signal, entered this competition and won. I knew then and there what I wanted to do. Radio, then television. I’ve been hired, fired, promoted and demoted. It’s been a roller-coaster. “My parents were the original boat people,” he continues. “Dad was the chief salesman for Polaroid and was on In Melbourne Tonight (Graham Kennedy) and the Happy Hammond children’s television show. Contacts. He inquired about how I might get into radio.” We agree on how important it is to develop a firm network and the absence of discussion re what migrants leave behind. “I can’t imagine not seeing my family,” he says. He and his wife, Pauline, have just welcomed their first grandson and Mal has already privately published a couple of kids’ books for him. “When we first arrived in Frankston my parents thought it was a one-horse town. They were the original pioneers. I have fond memories of being a Scout in the ‘50s and lining up at Davey St (Frankston) Primary School swearing allegiance to the flag; drinking a curdled half-pint of milk. We used to have bonfire nights in the square that used to be where the cinemas are now.” His younger sister still lives in Frankston. Mal penned The News Man from his 53 diaries compiled over his life in media. “Sometimes I wouldn’t listen to the stories when reading the news if they were too distressing. Turn the headset off.” It was hard when his friend Brian Naylor and
wife died in the Black Saturday fires, and when Greg Shackleton (Balibo Five) was murdered. “We pre-recorded the bulletin reporting on the Seven helicopter crash in 1982. Many journalists self-medicated back then. It’s only now we are seeing post-traumatic stress disorder. Some of the journos who were first on the scene were exposed to brutal situations.” He also covered Cyclone Tracy in 1974 (pictured). This longest-serving newsman on Australian television takes nothing for
granted. Yes, he’s been stalked. Yes, he’s been spat on, and yes, there have been messages left under his front door. “Stories get told before we know if they are true or not now,” he muses. I agree. News can sometimes seem more like a surreal social media ‘hoedown’ these days. But not in Mr Walden’s time. He was and still is the real down to earth ‘Frankston boy’ deal. Destiny aside.
TAFE helps Ben nail a new career Are you mature-aged or simply wanting a career change? Maybe you didn’t get the university offer you wanted. Maybe you’ve been out of work raising a young family. When Ben Snell approached Chisholm about a career change, the building and trades staff tailored a program just for him that enabled him to continue working to support his young family. As a registered nurse working in mental health for 14 years, Ben was ready for a change, but with family commitments it wasn’t so clear cut. After being repeatedly knocked back in his quest for an apprenticeship opportunity, Ben realised he needed to demonstrate to potential employers that he had the technical skills required to do the job, so he contacted Chisholm Rosebud about completing a preapprenticeship. The program usually runs over 12 weeks, but given Ben’s situation the Chisholm carpentry team modelled an individual training program that enabled a flexible option to complete a pre-apprenticeship over a longer timeframe. Ben successfully completed his pre-apprenticeship in 2016 and obtained a trial labouring for three months during which his employer, Waterworth Constructions owner-operator Mark, offered him a mature-age apprenticeship in carpentry. Now Ben is completing his Certificate III in Carpentry at Chisholm. “I wouldn’t have been able to get an apprenticeship without the help of Chisholm,” he said. On January 26 this year, Balnarring Picnics hosted their traditional Australia Day meeting in front of an enormous crowd at Emu Plains Reserve. Over the past decade, this meeting has become not so much a highlight on the picnic racing calendar, but a highlight on the Victorian sporting calendar. Thousands attended the event, filling the front lawn and lining the inside of the track; commandeering marquees and hundreds of shady spots in between. Highlights on the track: The Balnarring Cup was won by the favourite, Bolshoi Belle, trained by Cliff Murray and ridden by Reece Goodwin. Earn A Quid (trained by

John Rattle) made it four wins in a row and jockeys Courtney Pace and Reece Goodwin both rode doubles. Congratulations must go to Peter Spyker (president), Richard Daly (secretary) and their hard working volunteer committee on successfully managing one of Victoria’s “must attend” annual events. Balnarring Picnics will race next on the Labour Day Weekend, Sunday March 12, and our last meeting for the year will be Easter Saturday, April 15. BYO drinks and picnic and relax, as the kids can buy a ‘ride pass’ to all attractions to keep them amused all day. Entry $10 adults, free for those under 18. Balnarring before, it is a must and only one hour’s drive from Melbourne. The most important recipe There is no known recipe for producing a well-rounded, confident and motivated young person. Each individual develops in a uniquely different way shaped by the positive and negative influences in their lives. There are, however, certain ingredients that just have to be included in a school for the masterpiece to take its own unique form. First, the utensils, or the framework, that underpins the learning must allow for student curiosity, exploration and discovery. The IB-PYP curriculum encourages teachers to continually question why they teach, what they teach and how they teach. It focuses on true understanding and learning based on an individual’s unique style.
Second, the elements added to the school need to include: • Collaboration between students, staff and parents; • A touch of challenge and struggle to teach determination and grit; • A large amount of patience and practice to solidify an individual’s understanding of persistence and dedication; and, • A pinch of freedom to explore and create. These ingredients are then brought together through the passion of the teaching staff, the support of the parents and the enthusiasm of the student. The best recipes change over time and are

Cornish College Celebrates Five Years Cornish College celebrated its five-year Foundation Day on February 16. The college opened in 2012 as a new co-educational independent school with 220 students. Five years on the school welcomed 702 students from ELC to Year 12 this year. A group of students cut the birthday cake at the Foundation Day Assembly, including youngest student 3-year-old Lenia, from the Early Learning Centre, oldest student James, 18, in Year 12 and 700th student Alicia, Year 6, who joined Cornish College this year. Former student leader Eliza Wilton addressed the assembly and Year 9 students Nikki, Emmy, Naomi, Danielle and Maddy performed ‘In This Place’, a song written about Cornish College by former student Andy Olszewski.
All 702 students enjoyed a birthday cup cake on the Village Green at the school afterwards. Situated on 100 acres of natural parkland, Cornish College embraces its environment as part of the teaching and curriculum design. A unique part of the Cornish College campus is the Cornish Links nine hole golf course. More than 100 boys and girls from the age of three to 17 participate in the golf program, which is led by a passionate team of coaches, including Mr Sean Kirschenberg, Certified PGA Golf Professional, Mrs Nadina Light, Golf Professional, and Cornish College’s chaplain Jarrod Davies. Despite the growth in student numbers, Cornish College is still a medium-sized co-educational school where students are known and learning is personalised and engaging. Pepper, Indy and William love going to work. And that’s not just because their owners are there with them. It’s because they get to meet all kinds of interesting people throughout the day, chase balls and butterflies and chow down like kings (the scraps off the lunch table can been tasty!). These are well-loved members of an extended family who are a tad dog crazy and don’t care if anyone knows it. Progress Signs has been around since 1988. This sign writing business (think everything from road signs to shop fronts to real estate and large format sign writing) is a Mornington institution. It was founded by Graeme, and his sons Steve and Craig run the show now (with dad) and have always had dogs by their side. After all – dogs are man’s best friend and friends stick like ‘fuzzy’ mud. Steve’s dog Pepper (Border Collie) is the oldest and

Graeme’s dog William (Labrador Kelpie Cross) is the youngest. The middle ‘furry child’ Indy (Craig’s dog) is a German Short Haired Pointer. (There’s also a cat called Peppe who was found in the yard one day and stayed. She’s around 10 years old). “The clients love having them around,” says Graeme, who has always had a canine companion at work. Before adopting William, Graeme’s best friend was a black Labrador called Diesel. “It’s a generational thing. They come out with us on jobs if they can, or hang out at the factory because there’s always somebody there. They really go everywhere with us. We’re companions. Everyone knows them.” When the terrific trio isn’t working (of sorts) they like to go for walks – Indy loves the Balcombe Estuary Reserves - and of course hunkering down for a snuggle or a bowl of Black Hawk grub. Drop by to say hi any time. You’ll be welcomed with wagging tails and smiles. Now that’s a sign of the times.

On March 9, for one show only, Australian jazz legend Vince Jones and The Astral Orchestra will pay homage to the rock music icon with an interpretation of two of his albums ‘Astral Weeks’ and ‘Moondance’. It’s called ‘Van Morrison’s Masterpieces’. It’s a chance to return to a golden era - a time when The Beatles stopped touring and progressed to psychedelic rock; Dylan left folk and went electric; and Van Morrison hired New York’s finest jazz musicians and recorded ‘Astral Weeks’ and ‘Moondance’. Jones describes the production as a respectful interpretation of the original albums and “a full earful of music” for the audience. ‘Van Morrison’s Masterpieces’ is at the Frankston Arts Centre, March 9, 8pm. Music Legends to play in Mornington Normie Rowe, Johnny Young and Ross D Wyllie are coming to the Peninsula Community Theatre. Between 1965 and 1967 Normie Rowe was the biggest male pop star in Australia. His presence generated hysteria and for two years he reigned supreme as Australia’s first King of Pop. Normie cut a string of hits including Que Sera Sera and Shakin’ All Over (the top-selling Australian single of the 1960s and one of the biggest-selling Australia recordings of all time). His other hits include It Ain’t Necessarily So, I who Have Nothing, I Just Don’t Understand, Ooh La La and It’s Not Easy. Johnny Young started his career in the ‘60s with number one hits Step Back and Cara Lyn, which were the biggestselling Australian singles of the 1960s, behind Normie Rowe’s Que Sera Sera and Shakin’ All Over. He recorded the hit All My Lovin’ in 1967 - his signature song. From 1971 to 1988 he produced and hosted the children’s variety show ‘Young Talent Time’. Ross D Wyllie arrived in Melbourne in 1967 to host a live music show UpTight. Ross had several national hits

The MPVA is the official industry association representing Peninsula wineries and here’s what they have planned in 2017: PENINSULA PIERS AND PINOTS - MARCH 12 Held on the Labor Day long weekend at Flinders Foreshore, 12noon - 3pm. Taste and buy a range of pinots and purchase local food from George Bass Cafe, Calamari Brothers, Handmade Ice Pops and Red Hill Cheese, plus drinks from Red Hill Roast. The fifth of the Mornington Peninsula Blues Sessions – Big Summer Showcase was held at the Peninsula Community Theatre on February 4 and it was enjoyed by yet another sell-out crowd. The popular Peninsula live Blues event runs twice a year. Iconic stand-up comedian and MC Elliot Goblet started proceedings with a brilliant routine that had the crowd of 250 roaring with laughter. OZ Rock legend Mike Rudd then joined Australian Blues masters Lloyd Spiegel, Geoff Achison and Sydney soul diva Cass Eager to thrill the audience with a high class, interchanging acoustic first half followed by a pulsating electric second half with Ben Wicks on bass guitar and Cameron Smith on drums joining the four featured artists. As 3RPP’s Blues doyen Ray Reid, who hosts The Blues Shack program every Monday night, observed in his review: “The solo, duo and mix of artists during the acoustic sets and backing band during the electric sets were just brilliant!” The unique mixed format, where all artists played individually and then combined, culminated with a superb, massive ‘jam’ at the end of the night. Sessions creator Patrick Elliget has thanked his team of volunteers along with Mark Mayle and Terry Murphy on sound and event partners Red Hill Brewery and Radio Port Phillip 98.7. A performing arts festival will be held in Rosebud this month to celebrate International Women’s Day. A Woman’s Place, a mini-festival established in 2015 by Peninsula theatre makers Anthea Mackenzie and Carole Patullo to celebrate women’s stories through theatre, music and dance, has been expanded this year to include a range of workshops, performances and a film screening. There will also be a dedicated music workshop and performance night for teenage girls. “Once again the weekend will begin with a morning tea Story and a Plate - but this is a morning tea with a twist,” Anthea said. “Story and a Plate will be set amongst popup op shops and everyone who comes will be asked to bring a plate of food that holds a special meaning or story behind it. Over the course of two hours we will share our food and our stories, a simple act that will reconnect us to our sense of community.” The stories will be recorded, transcribed and transformed into a verbatim-style reading performed by actors Carole Patullo and Jane Bayly on International Women’s Day. A highlight of the festival will be the premiere of Right Here, a new theatre work created by Carole and Jane from stories shared by women who live on the Peninsula. Hop along to Easter art show Artists from Melbourne and the Mornington and Bellarine peninsulas will exhibit and sell their stunning works during the Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron’s 8th Annual Easter Art Show. “Floral Allure” an exhibition by
Wendy Ng
Re-assembled elegance and the female form BY LIZ ROGERS Wendy Ng knows layers. Her work delves deep into the hidden world of overlapping pattern, shape, silhouette and texture through an exploration of medium, subject and technique. Sprung from a graphic design and illustration background, this delicately determined painter merges the worlds of advertising, publishing and fine art to create visually delicious work that is extremely delicate yet bold in its statement. This is art that speaks of beauty with a commercial twist and demands you listen to its subtle and seductive message. Ng predominantly paints the female form from her home in Mornington. Although she has her subject clearly in view, it is the exploration of layers and pattern that evolves organically during the process that gives her the most satisfaction. “It’s the non-specific elements of the work that I love. Working with the figurative form and finding shapes within shapes creates depth and surprise. There are many things to find...” Ng works on more than one canvas at a time because oil paint takes “a long time MARCH 2017 (64)
to dry”. It is this patience and technique that gives her art a paradox, substance and abstract intangibility while soothing its contradictions with an extensive romantic palette. This March sees a selection of her oil on canvas and Birch wood paintings on show at Manyung Gallery Mount Eliza where this Hong Kong born artist’s work will explore the female and floral forms using oil, gold and silver leaf and mixed media. “There will be up to 10 pieces and each has its own original mood and atmosphere,” says Ng. The Merricks House Art Gallery at Merricks General Wine Store is holding its second showing of paintings by Peninsula artist Gee Ryan (Gerald). Love One Another and Care For Our Planet runs until Monday, April 3, and includes paintings from Gee’s Love One Another Basin series, one of which has been acquired by the world-renowned Luciano Benetton Collection in Milan, Italy. The Australian contemporary art part of the collection, including Gee’s painting, will be travelling to the world’s major art centres, showcasing the works of 210 established and emerging Australian painters. “I am primarily interested in the power of colour to celebrate the mysteries that surround us,” Gee said. “And my

Geeze, that’s SWELL BY LIZ ROGERS Janenne Willis doesn’t do things by halves. We’re talking whole body emersion riding with the tide here. We meet over coffee and the mood is merry, open and generous. This bird soars with the best of them with an earnest intent that comes from her free-spirited core. She wants more. She believes in belief. Entrepreneurs are hard to find but Ms Willis comes from a long line of adventurers and explorers (a relative put Wilson’s Promontory National Park on the map and another proposed the Snowy River Scheme). There’s an artist auntie and nana too. This Balnarring babe has been around the world and back, was Chair of the Next Wave Festival for six years after working with them for nine, and, is the ideas gal behind the incredibly interesting sensory explosion that is SWELL. Never heard of it? You have now. “Music is one of my biggest loves. I grew up going to gigs across the Peninsula, lugging gear for bands. The idea of creating a live music experience that encapsulated more than musicians on stage has captivated me for a long time. SWELL (which she’s just received a $14,000 grant from the Creative Victoria Music
Works Rockin’ the Laneways Project for) merges creative mediums like music, performance and poetry, but it’s more than that,” she continues. This is how SWELL works. Participants arrive at a destination. There are five bells. Five opportunities for musical and installation experience. Movement. Music. Madness. For three hours. The first incarnation of this authentic event was held at The Carlton Club in town. The second was in the abandoned basement of the Royal Women’s Hospital as part of Melbourne Music Week and the third is happening on our home turf on Saturday April 22 and Sunday April 23 this year! “Point Nepean. Diversity of art at Whistlewood Following the exhibition of landscape works by artists in their summer exhibition, Whistlewood’s co directors Susan McCulloch and Emily McCulloch Childs will continue to represent select artists of differing cultural backgrounds as well as a wide range of Indigenous art in their Shoreham home gallery. “Whistlewood has a heritage of being a base for artists from a wide range of cultural backgrounds so it makes sense to continue that tradition,” says Susan McCulloch. “We found our audience particularly responded to softer abstractionists whose interpretation of the landscape had some similarities to those of the Indigenous artists we represent.” New works are received regularly while the McCullochs are also gearing up for one of their unique Art Parades of Indigenous art to be held on Easter Saturday.
“We show more than 80 Aboriginal art works at these events. They’ve been called ‘speed dating with art’ and are most like an art lecture but with real art instead of slides. They’ve become very popular and it’s a great way to see a big range of Aboriginal art from around Australia all available for sale afterwards,” says Susan McCulloch. If your community group has an idea for a project that addresses a local community need, then you should apply for Mornington Peninsula Shire’s Community Placemaking Grants before applications close on March 29, 5pm. The grants support community group projects that improve both the social and built environments of their townships. Last year the council funded 31 placemaking grants for projects including a mobile coffee café, edible, community and indigenous gardens as well as a memorial garden. Programs have also included a choir and a healthy kitchen program. Grants of up to $5000 per community group are being offered for projects from a funding pool of $113,000. Small Business Mentoring Sessions Mornington Peninsula Shire is once again offering free business mentoring in 2017. The council is inviting local businesses to book a one-on-one mentoring session with a professional business mentor from the Small Business Mentoring Service. How to work from home (despite distractions)
As I write this, I have a four-year-old and a one-year-old fighting for their dad’s attention as he’s just walked through the door. “Perfect timing to write this month’s topic,” I thought. I’m starting to change my mind. Whether it’s children, dishes, your partner, friends, texts, social media notifications or washing to be done, there are distractions all around us when working from home. You might be lucky enough to have a room as your office or a studio out back, so you’ve cleverly eliminated some of the chaos but for the most part, the chores and interruptions are still there beckoning you. So, how do we focus? 1. S chedule your day like you would if you were an employee. Put a sign on your door (if you have one!) to let anyone you live with know that you’re working and they’re not to disturb you. Decide your start and finish time as well as your lunchtime and breaks. 2. W ORK during your work hours. The washing can be hung out before you start or on a break. Turn your social media and email notifications off and set a time to check them (I check emails at 12.30pm and 4.30pm each day. Read The 4-Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss for more on this). 3. I f you have children home, you’ll undoubtedly need to work around their meal and nap times. Leave heavy-duty or time consuming tasks for early morning before they wake, during naps or once they’re in bed. If you can get them looked after for even one day a week or fortnight, be sure to use your time wisely, focusing on income generating activities or major projects.

Festival Director Message “In 2014, at the age of 40, I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a terminal blood cancer. With this devastating circumstance I found a way forward - trumping advertisty with empowerment and inspiring and rallying others along the way to live well - along with my voluntary committee, I have created the inaugural MY Mt Eliza Run & Fun Festival 2017 as a gift to my community who have supported me so much during my health journey. We are a rallied group of locals who believe that healthy individuals and families make for a resilient, generous and happy community. We believe that our ability to empower others (and see the value in it) starts with our personal wellness. So, we decided to volunteer our own talent and time to create a sustainable annual festival that benefits the community for the longer term. The MY Mount Eliza trail is set in and around the picturesque Mount Eliza Regional park and Moorooduc Quarry setting, located on the Mornington Peninsula. The festival will be hosted at Emil Madsen Reserve, home of the Mount Eliza Skate Park, Mount Eliza Redlegs (Junior & Senior) Football Clubs and Mt Eliza Cricket Club. If you haven’t done so already, please register now to compete in the 5km run/walk on a flat course for $35 (adult) and $25 (child/student/concession), or register for the 10km challenging trail run through the historic Moorooduc Quarry for $45 (adult) and $35 (child/student/concession). Teams or families of four can also register for a 10% discount. The event will utilise professional “live” timing and the course will be marked out with support/aid stations along the way. An official presentation will be held around midday, awarding prizes to a variety of winners including overall winner, fastest times for each age category, best fundraiser and more.

Internationally awarded long hair stylist and educator Lorna Evans, who owns Zumay Hair Salon at 8 Blake St, Mornington, offers wise advice. “I think that hair colour and style should be a permanent part of the wedding essential to-do list. Almost every bride has a look in mind as soon as they say ‘yes’! Visiting a senior stylist for a consultation about your face shape, desired look and desired colour should be done right away.” A low chignon for squares and plenty of volume for round: there are six standard face shapes and so much to consider. Zumay’s hairstylists are highly trained to both recognise a client’s face shape and determine which hairstyle will look best.
“We often have women come in to request a style that they’ve seen in a magazine,” says Lorna. “At Zumay we believe in educating our clients so that they make informed decisions. No-one likes unexpected surprises on their wedding day, so we will explain why a certain style does or does not suit your face.” Colouring hair is a science and it is crucial to be on the same page as your colourist. Senior stylists are trained to analyse your hair and determine whether it can be coloured in one sitting or if it needs more time. Finding your perfect diamond When you are looking for that special diamond, it’s often all about first impressions, and the thing that tends to draw the eye immediately is the size and shape of the stone. As the saying goes, “The bigger, the better!” However, whether you are buying your dream engagement ring or a beautiful occasional piece, there are certain characteristics to consider, which are known as the Diamond 4Cs. COLOUR The colour of a diamond is essential when determining a diamond’s value. The exception to this is fancy-colour diamonds, such as pinks and blues, which lie outside this colour range. Diamonds are normally valued by their lack of colour, and using a set of authenticated master diamonds to compare against, each diamond is given a grade using the international grading system from D (colourless) to Z (most saturated colour). At Avedis, every certified diamond that we select is graded between D-G colour only. CLARITY Virtually all diamonds have naturally occurring inclusions or blemishes; the size, position and type of inclusions have a direct effect on a diamond’s beauty and value.

CUT The precision of cut and overall proportion of a diamond when being cut from the rough, ultimately determines the brilliance of the diamond. A polished diamond’s brilliance lies in its complex relationship with light - how light reflects off the facets, how much enters the diamond and what amount of light returns to your eye. Domenica Carbone began making dolls’ clothes out the back of her parents’ fruit shop when she was just five years old. Her mum was a dressmaker, and the young ‘fashion designer’ would piece together fabrics and stitch them up on an old Singer machine to create outfits while her parents were working. Fast forward to today and Domenica is still sewing and designing. The former ‘McCrae Pavilion’ has certainly had a huge makeover. Trading fine dining for authentic Greek with a very modern slant, meet Alatonero - brainchild of Zac and Jacqui Poulier from the renowned Stillwater at Crittenden and Freshwater Catering. Alatonero, meaning saltwater in Greek, is simply stunning.
Start with the housemade dips - tzatziki, beetroot hummus and (white) taramasalata served with hot pita. Then try the Saganaki with Fig, Chargrilled Octopus, Lamb Ribs and don’t forget the Goat Cigars (OMG you will be in Greek heaven like we were). Dips and entrees are served quickly and the arrival of the mains is timed to perfection, allowing time to enjoy company and fine wine (or some of their interesting cocktails).
The blue and white décor, coupled with attentive, mainly European staff, takes you straight to the Greek isles. Zac and Jacqui are smart - the menu offers all the Greek staples, many of course have a truly modern twist, but there are also some delicious dishes you simply must sample. A dozen or so ‘Mezze’, five sides and around 10 ‘larger plates’ plus daily specials. As everything is designed to share it is wise to bring a few friends so you can sample more of the dishes. Servings are generous, local produce shines. They offer an amazing ‘Greek Feast’ but we wanted to choose our own.
I chose a Pimms Cocktail, which was amazing, fruity and fragrant with spices and herbs. The wine list boasts local, Australian and Greek wines, beer and bubbly plus a range of ciders to suit all tastes. The larger plates, or mains, are also designed to share. We chose Slow Roasted Lamb Shoulder with caper butter and burnt lemon (a melt-in-your-mouth sensation); we also tried Crispy Pork Belly with stone fruit and apple cider caramel (I am drooling just remembering the intense flavour and crackle in every mouthful); and we just had to try the Moussaka (traditional yes, delicious yes, it ticked
all the boxes). As a side, we had the Mt Zero grain salad with pomegranate, mint, olive oil and grilled haloumi. This would be a perfect dish on its own and it worked well as a side. On our first trip, we could not fit in dessert. Three visits later I would suggest you try Greek coffee chocolate tart with cherries and coconut ice-cream, or the Rizogalo with Red Hill strawberries and wild mint (actually - try them all!). You will love Alatonero, Greek cuisine at its best, right here on the Mornington Peninsula. Try it soon, take lots of friends so you can try everything! Move over Donald Trump, 2017 is the year of the vegetable. According to those in the know, the humble vegetable will reign supreme on dinner plates this year. Vegetables will take up more of the plate and more of us will ditch meat in favour of plant-based diets. Global food, restaurant and hotel consultancy Baum + Whiteman forecast the rise of the vegetable in its annual hospitality prediction list, declaring “vegetables in 2017 will extend their domination of the dinner plate, shoving animal protein to the edges ... or off the plate altogether”. Mornington Peninsula Magazine invited two Peninsula restaurants to tell us a little about how they source and serve vegetables and to share a favourite vegetarian recipe with our readers. Jacqui Poulier, owner of Alatonero (McCrae) and Stillwater at Crittenden (Dromana): “We are blessed on the Peninsula to have access to beautiful local produce and I love using as much locally grown vegetables in my restaurants as possible. Hawkes Boneo Farm are just down the road and supply a variety of the humble spud as well as other home grown veggies. At this time of year, we are serving lighter style dishes such as our Zucchini and Chickpea Keftedes with spiced pepitas at Alatonero and local Zucchini flowers with lemon scented local goats curd at Stillwater. Our take on
the Greek dish Gemista - stuffed tomatoes - is one of our best sellers at Alatonero. This version is gluten free and can be made vegan by simply omitting the feta garnish.” ‘Alatonero’s Gemista’ Serves 2 4 round tomatoes 1 cup cooked quinoa 1/2 red pepper, diced 1/2 red onion, finely diced 4 cloves garlic 2 tablespoons fried capers 2 tablespoons Greek feta Good glug olive oil Parsley, oregano, lemon zest Lemon to garnish Cut a small hole in the top of each tomato, scoop out the flesh and finely chop. In a pan, sauté the tomato pieces, red peppers, garlic and red onion before adding to the steamed quinoa. Mix through finely chopped parsley and oregano with the lemon zest. Season to taste. Fill the tomato shells with quinoa mixture and drizzle with olive oil, before roasting in a moderate oven for 20 minutes. They all agreed, when a vegetable is at the peak of season, the best thing you can do is give it the respect it deserves and treat it really simply: “When you follow the season, menus write themselves.” Mushrooms are such a great example of best in season produce, with such a short shelf life they simply must be fresh – “When they are good, they still have the scent of the forest,” Casa’s head chefs explain. “Each of us grew up in the sticks – we all share nostalgic memories of foraging for wild mushrooms as kids.” “Mushrooms are one of our favourite ingredients, so full of flavour and when sautéed slowly in a little butter, garlic and fresh herbs, all you need add is a piece of chargrilled sourdough and a free-range egg. High-rise development leads the way A landmark residential project proposed for Frankston could trigger a building boom in this city. Peninsula Project Group says its Allure Bayside development, at 10-12 Davey St, will be the first high-rise residential development in the Bayside/Mornington Peninsula region, but it’s unlikely to be the last. A group spokesman said heavy government investment in Frankston in the past five years, the opening of PeninsulaLink and the proposed redevelopment of the Frankston station precinct were all indicators of an area primed for growth. “We see many development sites in the area being snapped up and land-banked, awaiting our project to be the first to turn dirt,” the spokesman said. “All the signs are that this area has been prepared for future growth in the coming years. The current property market seems to be reflecting this, with many reports of Frankston property demand reaching new heights and property values on the incline.” Designed by Denton Corker Marshall and Canopus Group Architects, the 14-storey Allure Bayside development will include 77 one, two and three-bedroom luxury apartments, sub-penthouses and penthouses above a single-level podium incorporating the site’s existing heritage buildings, with a fourlevel basement carpark below. With a fairly mild summer and our gardens producing an abundance of beautifully ripe homegrown fruit and veggies, many of you may find you have more produce than you can use for your daily meals. This is where the real beauty of growing your own food begins to shine. Preserving. While there may be loads of meals you can prepare with your abundant crops of tomatoes, basil, zucchini, cucumbers, chillis, eggplant and capsicum, there are many preserving techniques to help you enjoy your plentiful supplies later in the year; pickling, freezing, dehydrating and bottling just to name a few. Tomatoes are easy. Making sauces, pastes and jams are on most homegrowers’ radars. But simply storing your whole or chopped tomatoes can allow much more flexibility for many months to come. And if you have planted a good crop (say 20-30 plants) you will likely have enough to take you close or through to the next
harvest in 2017. Abundant herbs can be quickly transformed into pestos, whacked in the freezer and thawed as required throughout the year for cooking or snacking. Zucchinis (and cucumbers) have well-earned reputations for overproducing with most people choosing to let them rot on the ground after getting sick of too many zucchini meals over summer. How often though have you wanted to use zucchini or cucumber when they are not in the garden though? Pickling both of these fruits in various ways is fantastic, as is making and freezing zucchini soups, slow cooking or dehydrating zucchini chips and juicing both if you still have too many. Eggplant and capsicum are always well enjoyed in many ways during the warm seasons, whether it’s cooked on the barbie, made into dips or just eaten raw. If enough is enough, then think about charring them and storing them in oil to be used all year as condiments and additions to a wide range of meals.
And as for chillis, well if you have more than one good sized plant in this season you’ll likely be wondering what to do with the excess long after the plant has withered and died. Stringing chillis up to dry and hanging alongside your garlic in the kitchen will give you two very versatile and well-used meal additions. However, chilli pastes and sauces are a must have in the fridge and cupboard for any spicy food loving family. And, depending on the variety of chilli you have grown, will provide you with many spiced up meals through the year. Doing a bit of reading on preserving will surely give you limitless ideas on how to continue to enjoy your homegrown harvests over the coming year, and given a little time and creativity your pantry will be filled with many delicious alternatives for your already fabulous produce.
