to ‘pink up’ their towns in the quest to place more breast care nurses in communities, or just remembering someone you miss, October gives you the chance to look after your own breast health and encourage others to do the same. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women other than non-melanoma skin cancer. Breast Cancer Awareness Month puts women’s health at the forefront and encourages us to remember it’s not rocket science, girls! Checking for changes in your breasts regularly and being aware of any signs of unusual pain that doesn’t go away improves survival rates because early detection

does matter. Log on to canceraustralia.gov.au, nbcf.org.au or pinkribbon.com.au to find out more and to ensure you’re putting your breast health first. Today and tomorrow. From February to December the Mornington Peninsula Women’s Cancer Group meets at The Bays Hospital in Mornington on first Wednesday of each month at 12.30pm, and at the Hastings Consulting Suite, 74 Victoria Rd, Hastings on the third Tuesday of each month from 10.30am-noon. All women with all cancers at all stages are welcome. Phone Jo on 0429 929 071.

Toorak College students shine on and off stage

The Mornington Peninsula community showed immense support for Toorak College with 1000 patrons attending the production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid between August 31 and September 1. The Little Mermaid ventures under the sea to where a beautiful mermaid Ariel falls in love with a human and defies her father in an effort to join her beloved prince on dry land. More than 80 Toorak College students were part of the cast and crew that brought their passion and talents together to perform this wellloved story. Year 11 student Amalia Foy played the lead role of Ariel. Amalia says that playing a character such as Ariel was a dream come true. “I can really relate to Ariel,” she said. “Having a wild imagination, big dreams and the courage to go after what you want is really inspiring. Ariel shows resilience when faced with challenges and develops a number of strong friendships in her journey of finding herself — that is what growing up is all about.” Toorak College has an elite performing arts program that includes dance, aerobics and drama. Students learn to adapt their personal experience into performance situations, which can help to develop creative thinking. The imagination required to create a character and engage with others in that character is a powerful tool to acquire. Students who participate in drama and performance build confidence skills and social interaction, which is conducive to various opportunities such as public speaking or overcoming personal battles such as stage fright. Combining these skills can help to consolidate self-esteem and self-discovery as they journey through their education and beyond. Always collaborating with students is a joy for me because watching them experience the thrill of performing on stage in front of a full house makes all the hard work worth it. If you would like to be part of a school that facilitates and supports the performing arts, we warmly invite you to attend our Open Days on Wednesday, October 10, and on Saturday, October 27. Tyabb resident Clare Donovan has written a book. It was never meant to be a best-seller nor have wide recognition nor a huge print run. But it has achieved what the author set out to do. This is a book that gives readers an insight into what nursing was like in the 1970s and beyond and will remain as a chronicle on nursing long after this holistic-first generation of care-givers has passed on. Gone Nursing is about a time when things were done differently. It is also about a time when patients stayed in hospital for up to two weeks instead of two days, and each nurse looked after their patient one to one. Times have changed and so has the way in which care is delivered in hospital, which makes this read a ripper. Clare explains. “We were hospital-trained, not universitytrained. I did my HSC at Frankston High in 1970 and was going to be a teacher. Everybody in my family were teachers, but I didn’t want to go to university and my parents didn’t have the funds to keep me there anyway. A friend had ‘gone nursing’ and the stories she told made it sound interesting, plus it was a paid position, which I thought was fabulous! I went to live in the nurses’ quarters near Prince Henry’s Hospital in the city after growing up in Mount Eliza, then went on to Williamstown Hospital to finish my training. It was the ideal way to get out of home, and the work was challenging too. I still catch up frequently with those nurses. We have a very strong bond.” She continues. “It took me a couple of years to finally put pen to paper because I wanted to cover other nurses’ experiences as well as my own. I had been working in the pharmaceutical industry after leaving nursing and was working full-time. I didn’t really have the space to write it until I retired, and it has been very rewarding because the response from other nurses has been huge. I’ve also had nurses of this generation tell me how interesting it is to see how it used to be done.” Clare printed 250 copies of her self-published tome this year and has only a few copies left and will need a reprint. Dedicated to “nurses everywhere” for their “dedication and compassion”, Gone Nursing takes you Rhys and Peter Horobin.

through the ward rounds, exam time, nurses’ home, children’s ward, night duty, death and dying, and emergency codes for starters. But that’s only a snapshot. “It was only when I had a friend as a patient that the penny dropped. I realised that everybody belongs to someone and you never deal with a person in isolation. Nursing is about getting the whole picture and connecting. We never had any formal debriefing when something challenging happened. We relied on each other and that built real comradeship. I still have many of those friendships today.”

It’s true that advancements in diagnosis have brought about better outcomes for patients and many nurses are now nurse practitioners who have special training and can prescribe medicine, but Gone Nursing brings a refreshing understanding of what it was like to work alongside other student nurses who always had your back. It also highlights the importance of human connection. If you’d like to read more, email gone. nursing@bigpond.com to order a copy. Photo (above) by James Pyne Photography.

Peninsula Grammar uses technology to transform education Director of Innovation and Learning Technology Dean Pearman and Junior Years Teacher Georgina Bishop have both recently been selected again as Microsoft Innovative Educator Experts, joining more than 7600 educators in the MIE Expert program worldwide. Each year, Microsoft selects innovative educators to share ideas, try new approaches and learn from each other as a global community dedicated to improving student outcomes through technology. As MIE Experts, Dean for the third year and Georgina for the second year running continue to build their capacity to use technology in both the classroom and curriculum to improve student learning. They are both inspired by the opportunity to transform teaching and learning, harnessing technology to help students achieve their full potential. “Microsoft Innovative Educator Experts are inspiring

examples of educators applying new ways of teaching and learning in their classrooms that motivate students and empower them to achieve more,” said Anthony Salcito, Vice President, Worldwide Education, Microsoft. Students at Peninsula Grammar learn by doing, engaging in various activities together that seek to develop the noncognitive skills of creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, communication, problem finding and solving. Technology is a great leveller — it doesn’t discriminate, it empowers all learners to do things they couldn’t do before. Peninsula Grammar seamlessly integrates technology into the classroom environment so students can continue to learn, grow and flourish. Morell St abode grows from English oak inspiration BY LIZ ROGERS

There is an award-winning contemporary home on Morell St in Mornington that has sprung from a young family’s desire to ensure a significant English oak tree at the rear of the allotment remained intact and glorious. The brief given to Vibe Design Group before embarking on this breathtaking design was to ensure there was a visual connection with the majestic life force from within the interior of the home while capturing distant bay views to celebrate the site’s coastal connection. The family also wanted a streamlined link between the kids’ rumpus area and the outdoor play zone.

The final result is spectacular. Upon entry you immediately relate emotionally to the ancient form sprawling its greenery across the breadth of the black anodised window combination. Outside becomes inside. Height, depth and width open the mind’s eye while delivering a timeless organic statement of mega proportions. This is a home designed with aesthetics and interaction with surrounds equally in mind and this far-sighted understanding flows from lower to upper level where framed bay views and the lower pool deck connect the themes of water. Volumes responding to terrain and excellence in the use of glass are key to this property’s minimalist success. Vibe Design Group’s grasp of how glass can connect interior levels with exterior vistas is palpable. The ground level rises into the upper living zone through the installation of a glass wall separating the upstairs living area and void, which becomes an invisible buffer, achieved with floor and ceiling recess details and large spans. Senior Vibe Design Group designer Kathryn O’Sullivan explains. “The glass extends across the study entry — interrupted only with a circular door handle, allowing the tree view to take precedence, clear and directional. Views of the outside were vital to this property’s success. The owners wanted the building to present in a minimalist way to the street with timber battening disguising the garage door and extending solid and transparent over the entry. You can just see tips of the oak tree filtering over the deep roof from street level for a taste of what is to come. As soon as you step over the threshold, your eyes are drawn to the beauty of the oak standing proudly down the hall and through the rumpus room.” Vibe Design Group received the Excellence in Use of Glass Award for its Morell House at this year’s Design Awards held at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV). Its clients were rewarded with a lifetime of English oak tree and sea view pleasure. Stunning. Love of land and learning BY LIZ ROGERS

Now this is something special. Just off Bentons Rd in Century Drive, Mount Martha, is a 2ha property that looks like it’s out of an authentic Aussie-made fairytale. Mud-brick house, wetlands, peacocks, chickens and their rooster, possums, bats and dogs. Then there’s a dinosaur table, skateboard ramp, tool shed, vegie garden and fruit trees. And don’t forget the gorgeous guinea pigs, worm farm, sheep and an outdoor pizza oven too. What? Please explain? Tony O’Connor loves nothing more than to wander around his neck of the woods to check what’s going on with the native flora and fauna. Graduating with an agricultural science degree from La Trobe University, then gaining a Diploma of Education and Master’s in quality systems management, this coast to country carer of the land teaches a school-based apprenticeship in parks and gardens in Frankston part-time and used to teach at Mornington Secondary College. He’s also building a guest

( 18

Everything we love about the peninsula, fresh every month

house on his property, but it is his junior Landcare group, part of the Balcombe and Moorooduc Landcare group, that really satisfies his soul. He explains. “Lots of home-school parents and their kids rock up on Fridays to experience a range of activities. There are also kids who find it easier to learn by doing rather than by sitting down in a classroom and reading a book. Sometimes we go on walkabout and explore whatever we find along the way, or make fossils by pressing things into clay or grow vegetables. Then there’s the worms, the soil, composting and farming. The animals are always a hit too. But it’s not just about admiring the creatures and landscape. It’s about real education. Someone has to be responsible and it’s us. Giving kids knowledge is better than anything money can buy. Giving them a voice gets them connected to and invested in nature.” There are more than 5000 groups across Australia involved in the Landcare movement. Tony’s not-forprofit eco experience on his own home turf is all about generations coming together and working in co-operation to look after our landscapes and waterways. A $30 annual family fee is all you need to pay to join the group, which gets your kids learning about the environment from the

ground up on Fridays with Tony. “We have to pass on this knowledge to kids so they know how to look after the land and environment properly. I have different experts in their fields helping on Fridays to do just that. They are all volunteers. Whether it’s helping to build possum, bat and bird boxes, or building huts in the wetlands, or teaching different handcrafts, we all have the same aim in mind.” As part of his passion for caring for the land and environment, Tony has also started the Balcombe Creek Habitat Project, which encourages school and kinder groups to come to his property and learn how to create homes for wildlife. He goes on. “I started this around three years ago. Each kinder or school sets up a campsite and creates homes for local wildlife like lizards, bats and frogs, or how to make a wombat habitat. They are incredibly enthusiastic.” And so is Tony. This downto-earth eco warrior wants walking trails linking rural property to rural property across the Peninsula with the aim of sharing specific skillsets along the way. Impossible? Never say never.

Care in the home has become a welcome way of living for older people on the Mornington Peninsula, allowing them to continue living in their own home and community. But industry insights reveal that people aged 65 and older, as well as family members supporting them, sometimes don’t understand how the in-home aged care system works, meaning people often go without vital support services.

1300 230 630

Just Better Care Mornington owner Callum McMillan says people often aren’t aware that in-home support can extend to day-to-day tasks that may become a little difficult over time. For some, assistance with shopping and meal preparation a few times each week might be adequate, while others may have more complex needs. “There is a common misconception that in-home aged care is just for personal care such as showering and grooming, so we are trying to get the message out that the possibilities are wide and varied,” Callum says. “Getting support is about aiding people to continue living independently and leading quality lives. They need to understand they aren’t losing anything by asking for a helping hand.” To find out if you or a family member are eligible for government-funded in-home support, visit myagedcare. gov.au or phone 1800 200 422. Indigenous poetry in motion BY LIZ ROGERS

Something very special is happening from October 7-14 in Somers. Indigenous poet and 2017 Windham-Campbell Literary Prize (Poetry) winner Ali Cobby Eckermann is mentoring three Indigenous poets at Kalang Retreat. This is exciting not only because of the quality of the work by this Yankunytjatjara woman born on Kaurna land in South Australia, but because it draws a line in the sand as far as showcasing contemporary Indigenous poetry as a force to be admired and learnt from. We chat about how poetry helped her healing as one of the Stolen Generation, how she takes solace in the brevity of the work, which leaves less room for debate, and how poetry allows her to focus on emotional strength through immediacy of delivery. She explains. “I always wanted to write but didn’t start until I went to the desert to reconnect with my Aboriginal family, who has a strong line of singers, dancers and creative people. It took me a long time to find them and it was only when I returned to country about 20 years ago that poetry helped me find sense in a world that was moving fast. I had visited

( 26

Kalang Retreat a while ago as an individual artist and was excited when (owner/operator) Michelle suggested these workshops. I am looking forward to being a mentor to pass on knowledge and skills.” Ali had two mentors in the desert and says they were invaluable. She also says that the number of Indigenous poets has grown over the past 10 years. “Maybe that’s because we have more access to the spoken word, or perhaps it is that when people feel oppressed they respond in creative ways. We are all joined by a cultural conscience.” Ali is the first Indigenous writer to attend the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa and is the first to receive the Windham-Campbell Literary Prize from Yale University. This prize covers four categories including fiction, nonfiction, poetry and drama and substantial prizemoney comes with it. Ali intends to spend the next 12 months hunkered down writing her first prose novel after having written numerous poetry collections, verse novels and a memoir. Joining her at Kalang Retreat will be writer

The Collective Spirit seven-day First Nations Creative Development Residency will culminate in First Nations Poetry Reading at Whistlewood Gallery in Shoreham on October 13 from 5-6pm. Collective Spirit is supported by a State Government Creative VicArts grant. This is not to be missed. Injured penguin rescued from rough surf BY KATE SEARS

A ferocious wind was hitting Frankston’s foreshore. Waves were thrashing violently on to the sand. Julie Baker was rugged up and determined to complete her daily walk along Frankston beach despite the bone-chilling conditions. It was then that she saw a little fairy penguin struggling in the waves. She and her dog kept their distance at first as they watched the little fella contend with the challenging weather. “He was flapping along but he was really struggling with the waves and looked like a baby penguin,” said Julie, from The Sports Injury Clinic in Frankston. “He looked very distressed. His flippers didn’t look too bad but when I got closer I saw that his eye was badly injured. He was waterlogged and couldn’t get out of the water.” Julie called AWARE Wildlife Rescue and kept the penguin calm and warm until a volunteer arrived and took it to the Karingal Vet Hospital, from where it was sent to Melbourne Zoo. “I was told that his eye was severely injured and his flipper wasn’t good either. He couldn’t hunt, so he couldn’t feed, so he was anaemic and had very little strength. He was actually an adult yet was so small because of his injuries affecting his eating habits,” said Julie. “He definitely needed my help that day.” If you ever find distressed or injured marine life or wildlife, keep an eye on them and call AWARE’s 24-hour hotline on 0412 433 727. Between 8am and 5pm you can also call the AGL Marine Response Unit on 1300 245 678. It’s important to remember to approach animals with caution because some can be dangerous if they feel threatened. If you want to see one of 2016’s most inspiring documentaries while creating awareness surrounding suicide through the R U OK campaign, support Marlene Hoff’s R U OK? Day fundraiser in Rosebud. Marlene, the owner of 100 Mile Foodie, is planning a special screening of Embrace at Peninsula Cinema Rosebud on Wednesday, October 17, at 7pm. To do so, she needs to sell 65 tickets by October 5; they cost $47, with $25 from every ticket going to suicide prevention charity R U OK? A maximum of 100 tickets will be sold, which would raise $2500. “I will aim to do one of these fundraising events at the cinema with canapés and wine every three months so we can support R U OK? with $10,000 each year to help this amazing organisation help those most at risk in our community avoid taking that ultimate cry for help,” Marlene said. Embrace follows body image activist Taryn Brumfitt as she travels the world to explore the issue of body loathing; her unconventional ‘before-and-after’ photo posted on Facebook was seen by more than 100 million people and triggered an international media frenzy. Anyone who is able to donate bubbles, wine, beer, cider or ingredients to make canapés for the fundraiser, or supply items for a raffle, should email Marlene on marlene@100milefoodie.com.au; tickets for the fundraiser are available at fan-force.com/screenings/ embrace-peninsula-cinema-rosebud “Your support last year was amazing,” Marlene said. “Please support it once again because the Mornington Peninsula region really needs it.”

It’s time to salute our citizens Do you know someone whose efforts within our community should be recognised? Have you been to a local community event that you thoroughly enjoyed? You can acknowledge someone’s tireless contribution to our community by nominating them for the 2019 Australia Day Awards in the categories of Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year, and nominate a Community Event of the Year that you have attended or helped to organise. Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Bryan Payne said being nominated for the awards was a great honour and every year remarkable residents are recognised. “This is a wonderful opportunity to thank someone you know for their valuable and selfless contribution by nominating them for the Australia Day Local Awards,” Cr Payne said. IRENE CRUSCA Casual chats with Peninsula people by Yazmine Lomax While Hampton East artist Irene Crusca specialises in painting portraits of others, the woman behind the easel is just as fascinating as her subjects. Where did your love for creating art begin? My love for creating art began as a child when I attempted to draw for the first time and my creative parents both encouraged me to do so. My main love quickly became depicting people and I somehow seemed to capture people’s character or spirit. It was a magical process that I totally trusted. Where do you draw inspiration from? My strongest influences are drawn from my Sicilian background, especially my parents, their love of music, and their garden. The villages in Syracuse, Sicily are rich with community and culture and helped me to fully comprehend the displacement of my migrant parents. This greatly influences my compositions as I incorporate the idea of a fractured identity in my works. I have also been influenced by artists such as Francisco Goya, Rembrandt van Rijn, Giorgio Morandi, Lucien Freud, Clarice Beckett, and Nusra Latif Qureshi — their honest, sad, and sometimes extremely dark portrayals of the human condition have given me permission to express myself in similar ways. What does the day-to-day life of an artist look like?

Initially, my routine was based on a 9-to-5 model, but I realised that although you can paint all day, there are only a few hours when the best outcomes are realised. I may have only three or four quality painting hours in the day, usually in the morning when I’m recharged and have clarity and maximum energy. I intersperse painting with writing and research of ideas I have, or of other artists and techniques. How do you cope with artist’s block? I generally get artist’s block when I’m feeling under pressure — I know I can’t come up with strong, developed artworks in limited timeframes. I am learning to avoid this by drawing on work I already have or limiting entry to awards that I know I’m ready for. The greatest block is loneliness — not solitude, which is necessary for creative work, but a lack of connection with others. A good walk or a chat usually sorts out my mood and my block dissolves. Why do you love where you live and how does it inspire your work? I’m very privileged to enjoy stability and peace in Australia, which enables inspiration, but my inspiration also derives from an inner place. My sense of place is one which includes my Italian background and so both my physical location and bicultural identity inspire me.

Trapped by fire in a Tasmanian mine At the time, the concerns of family and friends of the miners trapped below ground would have been the same as were felt during the recent happening in the north of Thailand. Unfortunately, the end result was not as happy. On Saturday, October 12, 1912, 170 men went down the North Mount Lyell mine but 42, many with young families, died after a fire in a pump-house 214m underground. On the day of the fire, 72 men reached the surface; the others were saved later. A Royal Commission soon after was unable to determine the cause of the fire. It recorded, however, that the 10 men whose bodies were recovered from the mine had died of carbon monoxide poisoning. Efforts to rescue the men below ground led to a record crossing of Bass Strait by the steamer Loongana. Fire-fighting experts and equipment from Victorian mines were rushed to Melbourne and the ship departed at 4.30pm on October 14 for Burnie. The Melbourne Age of

Bass Strait ferry Loongana, built 1904, 2448 tons, 91m length.

October 16 reported: “Notwithstanding the rough head weather, the Loongana managed to cross Bass Strait yesterday in rattling time.” She arrived at 5.45am after a crossing of 13¼ hours. The first ship registered in the southern hemisphere to be powered by steam

turbines, the triple-screw Loongana was built at Dumbarton, Scotland, and launched in 1904. Owned by the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand until December 1921, she was transferred to Tasmanian Steamers Pty Ltd, a company formed by a merger with Huddart Parker. With her red funnels and green topsides,

she was an attractive ship, offered greater comforts than earlier vessels and also reduced the passage time across Bass Strait. Her top speed of more than 22 knots allowed her to sail Melbourne to Launceston, wharf to wharf, in 15 hours, including a slow passage up the Tamar River. The current ferries that go to Devonport can make the crossing in nine hours. After more than 30 years of almost trouble-free service, she was sold to a Japanese ship breaker in 1936. Chilli’s the spice of family life BY LIZ ROGERS Cuteness alert! Chilli’s bound to get hearts thumping and tails wagging with just one longing for a play look. As a pivotal member of the Marsh family, who own and operate Dromana’s Rock & Redgum Garden Supplies, this gorgeous French bulldog spends the day entertaining clients and getting up to mischief. Tracey explains. “The customers love her. She’s a real person dog and demands interaction whether it’s with clients or their four-legged companions. She’s my shadow and comes with me on the school run to drop off our sons Finn and Joel, and then it’s into work. We waited for 18 months to get her from a breeder near Echuca and now I can’t imagine life without her. She’s got a beautiful red coat and the cheekiest expressions. Our regulars always ask after her and we’ve had people come back with their children to meet her.” As the pic suggests, butter wouldn’t melt in the mouth of this adorable

canine. Yes, she likes to nibble shoes and run around the rock yard so fast you’ll get exhausted just watching her, but she also helps out with a day’s work. Tracey continues. “It was hilarious, really. The guys were measuring up some rock the other day for a client and she held the end of the tape measure in her mouth and put her paw up on the rock as if summing up the situation. She’s here six days a week and has become a real conversation piece.” Whether it’s saying g’day to clients, playing hide and seek, or snoozing on her bed in the Rock & Redgum office, Chilli has spiced up everyone’s life. “French bulldogs are known for breathing conditions like snoring and grunting so we had her nostrils widened, which is pretty common. She probably needs a bit of training too, but we think she’s absolutely perfect just the way she is,” says Tracey. Drop by Rock & Redgum if you’re in the vicinity to see why.

Play all day the Devilbend way BY LIZ ROGERS

Changes are afoot at Devilbend Golf Club in Moorooduc since the signing of a new 21-year lease. Former general manager Tim O’Sullivan is back on board after an eight-year hiatus and plans to lead the scenic rural club to bigger and better things. Offering challenges to all levels of golfers, Devilbend brings country ambience and public access seven days a week to the premier golfing table. Tim explains. “The club was established in 1973 so there’s a lot of history here. Plans to improve the clubhouse are in full swing. There will be a new deck overlooking the 9th and 18th greens, and the driving range upgrade (completed by December) with a six-bay all-weather hitting area is being constructed along with an automated ball machine. That means members and guests can purchase a bucket of balls for practice and not have to retrieve them.” Devilbend is situated in the heart of a flora and fauna reserve with spectacular water features and a wonderful array of birdlife. The clubhouse is available for functions and the pro shop is always fully stocked and competitively priced, plus there’s a new Lifestyle membership for the time-poor golfer. Tim continues. “Our members and staff are very proud of our golf course. It’s in terrific condition and we want to share it.” Check out this gorgeous course for yourself on October 28. The Devilbend open day will include free junior and beginners clinics, complimentary golf course access, a jumping castle for the kids and live music. The club is also offering a 16-month membership for the price of 12 this summer. Hole in one! Lauren brings her skills to Family Law Life BY LIZ ROGERS

Family comes first at Family Law Life and that’s why the firm does divorce differently. This relationship-based group of lawyers believes in educating clients on how to make the oftenemotional process of separation or divorce a more positive experience that benefits the whole family. Mornington resident Lauren Wilson (pictured below) has recently joined the Family Law Life team in their new Mount Eliza office and brings with her a down to earth measured approach to the already successful Family Law Life table. Having a Bachelor of Laws (Honours), Bachelor of Teaching and a Bachelor of Business and Commerce gives this active member of the Mornington Life Saving Club the skills in out-of-court mediation and proceedings, plus a dedicated commitment to tie up loose ends. Children’s needs in any matter are the priority at Family Law Life, and Lauren’s five-year stint as a primary and secondary school teacher and as a parent to two strongwilled beautiful daughters has given her an invaluable understanding of different family units, which is reflected

in her approach to settlement agreements. Lauren brings a calm and supportive manner to proceedings to secure the confidence of all parties involved and can advise on parenting arrangements, financial settlements, binding child support agreements, spousal maintenance, divorce, family law and family violence litigation matters. While Lauren’s aim is to keep family members out of court, if matters do end up there, Lauren has the experience to guide clients through the process. If you’re currently going through separation, give Lauren a call at the new Family Law Life suite in Mount Eliza. There is life after divorce. Call Lauren to help with your transition. Murals mark new chapter for reserve Hastings students have unveiled a series of custom murals for Wallaroo Reserve, marking another milestone in the five-year project to create a great community presence and further efforts to prevent graffiti at the reserve. The Wallaroo Reserve Activate Spaces Project empowers community members to get involved and leave their mark at the reserve in a positive way. To date, the project has seen several improvements to the reserve, such as landscaped architecture, seating and vegetation planting, including those planted at the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council’s community tree planting day in August last year. Over the past five years, additions to the reserve have included a basketball half-court, a barbecue and shelter, a BMX track, a playground, and a 100m bio retention system swale. The Mural Arts component of the project was co-ordinated by Helen Smith and Miles Lindqvist, from Western Port Secondary College, who were committed to ensuring involvement from local schools and community groups to ensure everyone had the opportunity to

participate. Cr Kate Roper described the quality of artwork as “outstanding”. Mayor Bryan Payne said: “This project has seen much collaboration and community support from Federal and State Government, Wallaroo Residents’ Action Group, Wallaroo Primary School, Western Port Secondary College, Advance Community College, Hastings Primary School, Good Shepherd Community House and Community Kinders Plus.”

Biosphere reserves are areas where humans strive to live sustainably within their environment, share best practice approaches to sustainability and work in partnership with like-minded communities. The Mornington Peninsula and Western Port Biosphere Reserve is designated under UNESCO’s Man and Biosphere program, which recognises the area’s exceptional ecological values on the fringe of an expanding city. The Mornington Peninsula and Western Port Biosphere Reserve Foundation advocates for conservation and true sustainable development, undertakes projects to protect and enhance biodiversity, co-ordinates Citizen Science events, and undertakes community

and stakeholder consultation in conjunction with its partners. Western Port is an area of high biodiversity with internationally significant Ramsar wetlands that support hundreds of threatened species. It is also one of the fastest expanding peri-urban areas in Australia. The Mornington Peninsula and Western Port Biosphere Reserve Foundation works with the community to create a sustainable future for the region — environmentally, socially and economically. It does this through research, education, community engagement, partnerships and on-ground efforts, such as the Water Stewardship program. For more information and a membership application form, go to biosphere.org.au, or drop into the office at 1/97 High St, Hastings.

I know problems don’t keep office hours and that’s why I’m available for you — 24 hours, seven days — on 5977 5600. If you need assistance, please give me a call at any time of the night or day. If it is not something I can fix myself, my office and I will help you find the assistance you need. I also take this opportunity to welcome the range of great policies announced by the state Liberals, to deal with Victoria’s rising crime, ballooning cost of living and worsening congestion. A state Liberal government will enact tough new laws, fix our bail and parole systems and introduce minimum mandatory sentences, so that the rights of victims in our state are once again put ahead of the offender’s. A state Liberal government will continue the ban on fracking, but allow conventional gas exploration, giving landowners the power of veto and a share of royalties. Under this policy, Victorian gas will be retained for Victorians. These policies will put real downward pressure on both gas and electricity prices across Victoria.

The state Liberals have also announced a $450 million partnership with the Liberal Federal Government to extend metropolitan train services to our community for the first time. Under Stage 1, residents of Crib Point, Bittern, Hastings, Tyabb, Somerville, Pearcedale, Baxter and Langwarrin will be able to take a short drive to the proposed new ‘park’n’ride’ just above Baxter, park all day and catch one of the more frequent and reliable train services right through to the city without having to change trains. When Stage 2 is undertaken, metro services will be extended right through to Stony Point where they will link up with the French and Phillip Islands Ferry.

Get out and walk for our bays Fancy a picturesque stroll through wetlands or along the waterfront while raising money to help protect our marine environment? Then Walk For Our Bays is for you. Organised by the Dolphin Research Institute, Walk For Our Bays is on Sunday, October 21, with 9.30am and 10am starts at the Western Port Marina complex. You can choose between a guided walk through the Warringine Wetlands or a dog-friendly stroll around the picturesque waterfront of Hastings. There will also be hot drinks, a sausage sizzle and community stalls open from 8.30am at the Marina Bar & Bistro, and free family entertainment including the Totally Wilde Magic Show, Faery Emma’s facepainting and boat rides with Western Port Coast Guard. Free marine education programs will be running throughout the event, so come and learn about the treasures that live in our backyard. Did you know that Victoria has the largest whales (blue), the largest dolphins (killer whales), fast-growing kelps (a metre a day), the smallest sea star, swarming spider crabs and oceanic dolphins coming to live permanently inside our bays? Money raised by Walk For Our Bays will support the institute’s new ‘i sea, i care’ COMMUNITITES program that does not receive government funding. Your support will help to build a community that cares enough about our bays to change how we live around our coast. The institute is a community not-for-profit organisation that has been providing marine research, education and leadership for more than 27 years and acknowledges key event sponsors Mornington Peninsula Shire, Westernport Marina, Marina Restaurant & Lounge Bar, Westernport Holden, Peninsula Honda, Poyser Constructions and Mornington Peninsula Magazine. Celebrating the Peninsula’s Mumpreneur’s Kirsty finds perfect work/life balance When Kirsty Mantel had her first child, she came to a life-changing decision: she never wanted another 9-to-5 office job. “I wanted to be at all the kids’ school and sporting events and be around as much as I could.” So she took the plunge and started her own business, Seachange Holiday Rentals, and she hasn’t looked back. With her experience as a property manager in Mount Eliza before having Miller — followed by Sonny

Are you someone who has trialled two or more antidepressants and still have the symptoms of depression? Perhaps you find it difficult to tolerate the side effects of some antidepressants. Or maybe you don’t want to take them at all. Then transcranial magnetic stimulation may be for you. Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt and Mornington councillor Rosie Clark have just inaugurated an innovative depression treatment here on the Peninsula that aims to help the one in four Australians suffering from mental health issues each year. TMS Australia is now operating from OPTIMIND Psychiatry in Mornington; it offers an alternative to traditional forms of treatment for depressive illness and is having excellent results with people who have had limited or no response to treatments previously. So how does it work? TMS uses controlled magnetic pulses to activate the positive mood circuits in the brain (by stimulating the underactive area of the brain associated with the emotional centre). It is a non-invasive and painless procedure that involves activating this area repeatedly to encourage performance at normal levels. Unlike antidepressants, which can cause side effects including insomnia, nausea, fatigue and weight gain, or electroconvulsive therapy, which can cause headaches, memory loss and confusion, known TMS side effects include temporary scalp discomfort and headache. That’s it. No hospital stay, no anesthesia. The procedure has been researched and used for more than 30 years without presenting any significant safety issues. As one of Australia’s leading TMS experts, TMS Australia co-founder and medical director Professor Paul Fitzgerald explains: “We are currently seeing a shift in the way depression is being treated in Australia and around the world. The development of TMS provides us access to a very well-tolerated, safe and very effective treatment for a substantial proportion of patients who have not responded to or can’t tolerate medication therapies. TMS

can make a real difference to the lives of many patients with depression and their family and friends.” OPTIMIND principal psychiatrist Dr Jeremy Stone continues: “It is great to be able to offer this previously unavailable treatment to Mornington Peninsula residents.” If you’re searching for an alternative treatment for your depression, TMS may work for you where other treatments have failed. For the majority of treatmentresistant depression patients, TMS can provide relief

within six weeks and last for one year as stated by TMS experts. Give TMS Australia a call to see if you may be one of them. TMS AUSTRALIA A: 303 Main St, Mornington T: 1300 867 888 W: tmsaustralia.com.au FB: tmsaustralia

Cheeks are a very important feature of the face and tend to droop and flatten with age. Anatomically, the fat pads that form the cheeks deflate and fall downwards and inwards, exacerbating the nasolabial folds from the corners of the nose to the mouth. There is resorption of the cheek bones with ageing, which further exacerbates the descent of the cheeks. Also, if you observe the light reflection from a youthful cheek, you will notice that there is a certain point where this light reflection is strongest. Often this point coincides with the point of maximal projection. Dr Dilly uses the mathematical formulas using the golden ratio or Phi to find this point on the cheek. Cheek fillers can be used to improve the shape of the cheek to more ideal proportions. Dermal fillers provide a non-surgical option for cheek enhancement helping to redefine the cheekbones and replace volume loss which comes with age. The results are instant, and the procedure takes around 30-45 minutes. Book in with Dr Dilly for your free consultation. Five keys to a healthy weight loss BY KATE SAVE

Weight loss shouldn’t be difficult if it is done correctly. Here are five rules to ensure that all the hard work you are putting in pays off!

Hydration — make sure that hydration is a priority by aiming to consume at least 2-3L of water every day (approx. 30-40ml/kg body weight). Thirst is commonly misinterpreted as hunger, leading to the consumption of more food than needed, when really a glass of water may be all your body is asking for. If you feel that you are hungry, have a glass of water first, wait 30 minutes and see if the hunger has subsided. Exercise — even though diet is the key to losing weight, exercise also plays a role:

80% diet, 20% exercise. So to ensure that your body is happy and healthy, aim to move your body for at least 30 minutes most days. This can be a run, brisk walk or even some yoga or Pilates. The combination of cardiovascular exercise and resistance exercise will give the best results, as the cardiovascular exercise burns fat whereas the resistance builds muscle mass, which increases metabolism. Daily exercise also improves mood and increases energy and metabolism for the day.

Don’t cut out foods — if weight loss is the goal, yet you are depriving yourself of ·

your favourite foods, it won’t work. Rather than cutting out chocolate altogether, it is better to include a small amount and enjoy it, or rather than trying a NO carb diet, try a LOW carb diet so your body is still receiving all the key macronutrients and will be less likely to crave certain foods.

Mind your portions — portion control is key. Society tells us that we should eat

more through serving size at a restaurant to serving size on a packet; even the size of plates affect the portion we consume. Try using a side plate or reducing the meat or carbohydrate portion of your meal and increasing the low starchy salad or vegetables.

Don’t skip meals — the longer you go without eating, the hungrier you will be, so rather than skipping breakfast and lunch then eating your whole daily intake in a few hours in the evening, try eating 3-5 small well-balanced meals throughout the day to keep your metabolism going. Start each day with breakfast to kick-start your metabolism and boost energy levels for the day. Want to take the guesswork out of weight loss and healthy eating? Try Be Fit Food! Fifty years of caring for women Michelle-Ann Bras & Swimwear is celebrating 50 years of trading in Mornington. It is still owned by Lois Mitchell, who started the business with her late husband John in 1967. The following year they had a daughter, Michelle-ann, who was aptly named after the store. Michelle-ann joined the business 32 years ago and together they have enjoyed servicing the needs of the ladies of the Mornington Peninsula with bras and swimwear. Twenty years ago The Pink Room evolved to care for women who have experienced breast cancer surgery. It is a special part of the business Lois and Michelle-ann are most proud of. Michelle-Ann Bras & Swimwear is one of Melbourne’s largest retailers of swimwear and bras, offering a specialty fit service for both bras and swimwear with an extensive range of large cup sizes available. The entire team has been with MichelleAnn Bras & Swimwear for many years. Store manager Helen McMillan has been Issue 83, OCTOBER 2018

on board for 23 years, and what sets the business apart from its competitors is the team’s knowledge of product and fit. Most importantly they take pride in knowing and caring for their customers. The staff are all Peninsula locals who have a strong connection to the community and have been well trained to advise you in making the right choice, whether it be a Camilla caftan, bathers, bra or prosthesis. Labels include Berlei, Triumph, Playtex, Panache, Glamorize, Empriente and Fayreform. Swimwear brands include Seafolly, Jets, Sunseeker, Tigerlily, Baku, Camilla, Speedo, Jantzen, Togs, Anita and Empriente. Lois and Michelle-ann would like to thank the wonderful people of the Peninsula for all their support and loyalty - it is very much appreciated. They feel very privileged to have three generations of customers, and some of Lois’s original customers are still shopping with her today, which they feel is something very special. I sometimes reflect and look back at when I was in my darkest days — unable to leave the house due to crippling anxiety and in a depression so deep the only option I thought I had was to check out. It doesn’t sound like something a person would want to recall but the reason I do this is to learn from that experience … to find the lessons and values in it so it serves a purpose in my life.

living in fear … basically I was toxic. And that was on me.

Something I have realised is that I ended up in that position not because of the things that had happened in my past or were happening in my present, but because of the things I wasn’t doing within myself in order to prevent that situation.

It took about 12 months to get back on my feet … to reconstruct the foundation I was based on and to recreate a version of me that was capable of creating and sustaining a positive state of mind.

I often talk to clients about my past and experiences, trying to share the lessons I have learnt and pass on any knowledge I have gained so they don’t have to experience the same thing. When I talk about that part of my life, I refer to it now as though I took the “easy path”, meaning although I didn’t know it at the time, there was a lot I could have been doing if I was a bit more diligent and proactive. I liken it to sitting on the couch, eating junk food, not exercising, bingeing on Netflix and generally being lazy … it’s no real shock when the physical health deteriorates and then physical illnesses occur. The same goes with mental health — I was codependent on the Dept of Veterans Affairs, I was blaming other people for things, I was judging, I was

Thankfully I didn’t take my own life; I took “the hard path”. In the state I was in, suicide would have been the easy option back then, but as difficult as it was I put my hand up, reached out and asked for help. I realised no one was going to magically come along and rescue me; I had to get myself in a position to get better.

That’s why in my work now I have a sixweek introductory program, which then leads into a 12-month program for those that are really interested in learning how to create the best version of themselves. Unfortunately this stuff isn’t taught in school, and after spending 10 years working with people to come out of depression and to overcome anxiety, I felt there was an opportunity to teach people how be responsible for their happiness. No more Band-Aids, coping mechanisms or quick fixes, just good old-fashioned education. As Dad always used to say: “Nothing worth having comes easy.” If you have any feedback, thoughts or something you would like some advice on, please feel free to email hello@ myndfit.com.au and we will do our best to address it next issue. Thanks for reading!

The Hard Path to Happiness

Look better naturally — effective, affordable, natural “Again,” as Sue and Adele from Advanced Skin & Laser say, “make sure you get the results you are paying for, not hype — only tried or proven.” Sue and Adele have been using CIT – Collagen Induction Therapy — for over 10 years, and our clients return each year for a few sessions as they notice the results and build upon them. CIT — commonly called skin needling — is a procedure using disposable medical-grade stainless steel needles in a disposable pen system to assist regeneration of cells by maximising stimulation and penetration of cell nutrients. At Advanced Skin & Laser we combine many modalities including collagen stimulation with IPL, CIT and peels often in one treatment. “Of course you need years of experience with all skin types for this and education is the key.” BENEFITS: Minimise fine lines, reduce pore size and

texture, scar reduction, painless and no risk of burning or scarring, assisting firming of the skin. SOLUTION-DRIVEN SKIN CARE: While Sue Verheyen was overseas earlier this year, studying and learning the latest treatments from around the world, she decided to introduce Retinol Dual-Phase Power Peel by Dr Murad. Sue did training and observation in Dr Murad’s Dermatology Centre over 20 years ago in Los Angeles. Sue says: “Obtaining training in ingredients with a medical percentage and pH, not fluffy, achieving fantastic results, was extremely difficult 20 years ago. Dr Murad was ahead of his time with ALA, peels, and skin care, apart from obviously his dermatology clinic treatments.” Adele previously undertook training with Murad Australia, and as a team they are adding some paramedical procedures to Advanced Skin & Laser. Both CIT — skin needling — and Retinol address concerns with fine lines, loss of firmness, acne and scarring etc. See our spring specials. Do not forget to book for your injectables with Anti Aging

BELKYRA® is the only nonsurgical injectable treatment for reduction of fullness under the chin that has undergone rigorous clinical evaluation, including four Phase lll clinical studies involving more than 2600 patients worldwide. Until now, treatment options have been limited to surgical options such as liposuction and non-surgical inclinic procedures using handheld devices or aggressive weight-loss regimens with potentially limited improvement. When injected into fat under the chin, BELKYRA® permanently causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat.

Aries: When the Sun is in Libra, that is your cue to

consider others. Your relationship status is highlighted. If you are single, do you want to be? If you are in a committed relationship, then the focus is off you and on to others. What or who needs attention?

Taurus:

All systems slow for Taurus during October. Your ruling planet Venus is Retrograde and in your opposite Sign. You need to be aware of relationship politics. You may be tempted to control situations with loved ones but you would be better advised to hold your own counsel.

Gemini: October is a fun-filled month for you. Like

a butterfly, you can flit from one pleasurable activity to another. You can literally stop and smell the roses. As some would say, you can listen to your inner child and play. Creative projects flourish, as do harmonious social activities.

Cancer: You are likely to enjoy your natural habitat this month — the sanctuary of home. If you live alone then now is the ideal time to redecorate in a way that lifts your spirits. If you have a busy household then family relationships are central. Your diplomacy skills may be needed.

Leo:

For more info go to seeingwithstars.net or ph: 0411 2555 77

Sagittarius:

The art of communication is central to your success during October. If you are diplomatic and considerate then your social and professional arenas are likely to benefit. However, if you resort to gossip then this could backfire. Learn to listen when necessary and speak when appropriate.

It is time to pursue your hopes, dreams and wishes. Look around and see which friends, groups and clubs support your dreams and which do not. Focus on the positive. It may be time to part ways with some connections. However, on the whole, opportunities for new ventures abound.

balance the budget. Virgos are usually frugal. However, this is just your Sun Sign. In astrology, spending habits extend beyond the Sun Sign. So you may need to tighten the purse strings if necessary, or increase your income if possible.

You are likely to be in the middle of a venture this month, something that may feel suspended in time. You need to be patient and keep working towards the end goal. The end is nearer than you think. You are in transition with key planets about to change direction.

Virgo: Money matters this month. It is time to

Libra: Your focus is usually on your loved ones. This

month you need to turn it back on yourself. Take a look in the mirror and ask yourself to decide on what is really important right now. What do you need to be happy? Then go out and do it. Just for yourself.

Scorpio:

Two fortunate planets — Jupiter and Venus — are in your Zodiac Sign, indicating that luck is on your side. Opportunities arise now in your love life and your financial arena. Focus on how you want these two areas to flourish and make the most of the opportunities. Fortune favours the brave.

Capricorn:

Aquarius:

If you want to broaden your horizons then you have to face your fears and let go of any fixed ideas that are holding you back. October is a time of adjustment, during which you have the chance to really soar, but only if you truly let go of obstacles from the past.

Pisces:

Recent or current events are changing the course of your life. You are well aware of the cycles of life because you are going through a changing one of your own. Hold on to the things and people who are dear to your heart and let go of anything else.

BY YASMINE LOMAX We Aussies are pioneers in a lot of ways. Chucking butter and sprinkles on bread? Way ahead of you. Abbreviating every word imaginable? All in an arvo’s work. But one thing we’ve yet to fully embrace is Halloween. The Celtic tradition, celebrated on October 31, dates back almost 2000 years. While originally a way to ring in the New Year on November 1, today Halloween is the one time of year when it’s acceptable for creatures small and large to dress up in wacky wears and scoff the entire contents of a jack-o’-lantern. If you haven’t celebrated Halloween before, never fear (or do … it’s kind of the point) — we’ve got your go-to guide on getting into the spooky spirit.

Costumes For couples — Shaggy and Scooby-Doo: All you’ll need is some green and brown clothes and a little face paint to transform you and your boo into the iconic Mystery Inc. duo. For the girl squad — the cast of Mamma Mia: Duh! Throw on a pair of denim overalls to become Meryl Streep’s Donna while your Dynamos shimmy into sequined numbers. For the forgetful — three-hole punch paper: We get it; life gets busy. If you find yourself in a last-minute costume pickle, make like Jim Halpert from The Office and stick three black circles to a white shirt. Bonus points if you work at a paper company.

Candy When you want a classic — caramel apples: Brush the cobwebs off your cauldron to create this Halloween musthave. Poke some chopsticks into red or green apples, whip up a batch of caramel and get dunking! Issue 83, OCTOBER 2018

When you’re feeling a little Pinteresting — strawberry ghosts: Dip strawberries into melted white chocolate and use the dark sort to mark a pair of haunting eyes.

Music Something old — Thriller by Michael Jackson: No surprises here; Thriller is the ultimate Halloween track with a hair-raising video to boot. Honourable mentions go to The Monster Mash and the Ghostbusters theme. Something new — Dracula Teeth by The Last Shadow Puppets: Full strings accompany the eerie lyrics of Dracula Teeth, crooned with swagger by the baroque duo. Something to dance to — Heads Will Roll by Yeah Yeah Yeahs: Karen O’s jagged vocals will have every ghoulish guest dashing to the dancefloor if the pulsating organ strains of the opening notes don’t do it first.

Yet another person has disappeared from the scenic coastal town of Mornington without a trace. Authorities have yet to determine what is happening to residents of this community where sea and sand usually spells good old-fashioned fun, but there are plenty of clues leading them to the old seafaring fella who lives in the fisherman’s shack nearby. Residents believe the place is haunted and know the ‘loner’ is scary and strange. Questioning him could be difficult. It could be dangerous. It could lead to a ghostly encounter. Who will find the missing and what happens when they do? Locked in Escape Rooms has just launched its latest room, The Missing, and it’s only for the brave investigator. Open just in time for Halloween, The Missing room will take you on a journey where disappeared people and ghosts play the major parts as you unravel the clues. Are you brave enough to explore the fisherman’s shack? Will you make it out alive? Are you ready to risk becoming one of the missing? Locked in Escape Rooms is the ideal place for end-of-year celebrations, birthday parties and corporate events. It offers packages for groups of all sizes and delivers a uniquely inspirational dose of interactive fun for everyone. Book today and escape.

Movies The time-tested treat — Hocus Pocus: Three witches, played by Bette Midler, Sarah-Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy, are resurrected on Halloween night in spinetingling Salem. Need we say more? The thriller with a twist — Scream: The slasher franchise isn’t the scariest by any account, but it expertly blends horror with humour. The brilliantly bingeable — Stranger Things: For the past two years, October 31 has meant trick-or-treating, pumpkin spice lattes, and new Stranger Things, the sci-fi series that plays homage to the ‘80s. While this year we’re tragically deprived of fresh episodes, Halloween night is the perfect time to re-watch the antics of Eleven and co. www.morningtonpeninsulamagazine.com.au

When we heard that Marty Williams from Cousin Leonard fame was getting a monthly singing group together in Balnarring, we thought you’d like to hear about it too. Known for creating the Peninsula Songriders Sessions, which happen monthly at the Westernport Yacht Club, Marty has been mulling over getting a group of like-minded songbirds together for a while, and now’s the time to drop by mid-week to the St Marks Church Hall in Balnarring for a bit of vocal release.

BY LIZ ROGERS He explains. “I just love singing, and a few of my friends said they’d like to have a go at a singing group. We had 20 people turn up on the first singing room session in August. It’s not a performance-driven thing; it’s just for the sake of it and about opening your mouth and singing. You don’t have to be an expert. You can be any age. I just pull out my guitar as a reference point and you follow the words on screen. We cover two songs per night plus there’s tea, coffee and biscuits on offer. It’s just about getting together with like-minded people who love to use their voice.” Happening monthly on a Wednesday

from 7.30-9pm, the next singing room takes place on October 17 and then on November 14. If you’re in the mood to croon and don’t mind throwing caution to the wind, go along, just $10 will get you in. Contact Marty on cousinmarty@gmail.com and follow him on Facebook @martywilliamsmusic or @peninsulasongriders for all musical updates. Sweet. THE SINGING ROOM A: St Marks Church Hall, Balnarring Rd, Balnarring. All welcome.

Last drinks at GPO It was the end of an era on August 30 as GPO Hotel brought the curtain down on its successful business. Staff and clientele mingled over drinks and delicious food as Tim Stout and Josh Roydhouse provided the live music. But stay tuned: a wonderful new chapter awaits with the opening of a great new business coming soon in this great venue.

It’s September 5 and the joint is jumping. The Corner in Wilsons Rd, Mornington, is hosting an art exhibition that means a lot to many people — not just because there’s an array of great art to peruse, but because all of the artists identify as living with a disability or having a history of mental illness. There’s art hanging everywhere. Flowers, forests, sunrises, Kombi vans and Sonic the Hedgehog and his freedom fighters. Parents and siblings have come to support their sons, daughters, brothers, sisters or just mates who have entered the exhibition and competition to win the artX trophy and the first prize of a $500 voucher to be used on art supplies to assist them in their artistic endeavours. There’s also a “highly commended” prize of $100 up for grabs. Nice. People are chatting and enjoying the finger food just like at any other opening. But this isn’t any other opening. This is an exhibition presented by genU, which provides a range of support to enable the art show participants (and many others) to live the lives they choose. This is an exhibition that gives these artists the vehicle to express themselves and be recognised for it. Formerly known as KarnivART, artX showcases work that celebrates diversity and inclusiveness, and it’s a great excuse to get together and have some fun too. This year there were 38 entries across many mediums including mosaic, painting,

drawing and tapestry. After running for 10 years in Geelong and in its third year in Mornington, this year’s artX was won by Jack Steele for his Colourful Rainbow Combi. There was a highly commended artist too, but he would prefer not to be mentioned. Judged by Jaclyn Jenkins (Brightly Arts), Ron Roach from Ron Roach Gallery and Peninsula street artist Tara Kingston, who hung and curated the exhibition, the night celebrated amazing art — and that, dear readers, is a truly great thing.

The Mornington Peninsula has long been home to a vibrant and energetic blues scene. Now there are plans for a new festival that its organiser hopes will become a major event on the national blues calendar. The Mornington Peninsula Blues Festival, which will be held at Mornington Racecourse on Saturday, February 9, next year, is the brainchild of Peninsula resident Patrick Elliget, the man behind the highly successful Mornington Peninsula Blues Sessions over the past four years. It will feature Australian rock and blues legends Ross Wilson and Phil Manning along with Chris Finnen, Lloyd Spiegel, Geoff Achison and others from 11.30am-9pm. Peninsula music-lovers will be able to enjoy food and refreshments courtesy of the Mornington Racing Club providers while they listen to eight high-class blues acts, and there will be various market stalls and displays in a celebration of what the Peninsula has to offer. Buses from Melbourne On The Move will be running to and from the festival, with pick-ups from Melbourne, Brighton, Mordialloc, Frankston, Blairgowrie, Dromana, Rosebud and Sorrento, so your transport options are sorted and you can relax and enjoy a day filled with sensational blues. Patrick was recognised at the 2017 Victoria/Tasmania MBAS Blues Awards with the Alan Stafford Award for his contribution to blues music. Take a stroll through stunning gardens Two Mornington Peninsula gardens will be featured as part of Garden DesignFest 2018 next month. Flinders’ Musk Cottage garden, designed by Eckersley Garden Architecture, and a garden at Red Hill South designed by Kate Seddon will be open from 10am-5pm over the weekend of November 17-18, with their designers represented on site. Musk Cottage has been a pet project of Rick Eckersley and his design team for several years. Originally, it was laid out as a trimmed English garden with manicured lawns and a wisteria-draped lattice, but Eckersley Garden Architecture’s thoughts were to create something that was uniquely Australian in flavour. This nonirrigated garden relies on the mulch at its base and the toughness of its plants, and it now stands as a testament to low-maintenance, sustainable gardening.

Now that spring’s here, it’s the perfect time to take a leisurely drive along the gorgeous Peninsula coastline

Decorative, remnant walls at the Red Hill property gave rise to a walled garden, creating a whimsical and welcoming entry. A broad deck, fire pit and strategically placed rock platforms create seating areas, while beyond the walled garden, refurbished buildings and meandering paths invite you to wander and explore. Character and whimsy abound in this garden with found objects and repurposed materials. Billed as Australia’s best display of professionally designed gardens, Garden DesignFest is a fundraising event managed by the Rotary Clubs of Kew, Brighton North and Central Melbourne. The main charity to benefit from this year’s event will be End Trachoma by 2020. For more information about Garden DesignFest 2018, go to gardendesignfest.com.au

Both exhibitions will run until November 14, so you have plenty of time to set aside a day where premium art takes centre stage. Just jump in the car and visit both of Manyung Gallery Group’s southern representations while enjoying brilliant coastal scenery along the way. Issue 83, OCTOBER 2018

Stephen Glassborow’s exquisite, delicately fluid work has been exhibited since 1978. His sculptures proudly stand in collections across Australia, the US and the UK and in China and Kuala Lumpur, among others. Miertje Skidmore’s high-gloss finished masterpieces have been collected by the NAB, Malaysian Power Board and The Sofitel on the Gold Coast, and they hang privately in Norway, England, Germany and California. Work of this calibre is not to be missed. Visit the 50-year-strong Manyung Gallery Group in two of the Peninsula’s most sensational coastal settings for pure artistic pleasure this November. And remember — lock November 3 in for your artist meet and greet. Stunning showcase of sensational art Forty years ago, the organisers of the first Mount Eliza Art & Design Show could scarcely have imagined what a massive success the annual show would become. It is now entrenched as one of the highlights on the Peninsula arts calendar, and the 40th anniversary show on the weekend of October 26-28 at Mount Eliza North Primary School promises to build on that reputation for variety and excellence. Artists, designers, sculptors and jewellers from around the Peninsula and beyond will have their stunning works on display and for sale. The feature exhibitors for this year’s show are artist Billy Nye, photographer Nick Psomiadis, jeweller Pam Mujica (PAMDesigned) and pottery artist Manuela Ferstl. The Grand Opening Gala

Night on Friday, October 26, from 7.30-10pm offers artlovers the opportunity to experience the exhibition with live music, wine from Foxeys Hangout, beers from Jetty Road Brewery, delicacies from the Edible Art Co and the live auction. Over the weekend, Café D’art will be serving refreshments and light lunches, as well as a barbecue. There will also be a scavenger hunt to keep the children happy while you enjoy the exhibition at your own pace. Tickets for opening night are available on trybooking. com/415921, while tickets for the weekend will be available at the door on Saturday, October 27, from 10am-5pm and Sunday, October 28, from 10am-4pm. The best woodfire pizza in the world is coming to you all the way from Sicily and landing in Dromana this month. Three Italian amici with plenty of cooking history and sensational sauce and pizza dough between them are opening Zero95 Woodfire Pizza Bar opposite the Dromana foreshore and summer is set to get tasty. Zero95 Woodfire Pizza Bar’s claim to making the best woodfire pizza in the world comes from perfecto pizza creator Andrea Cozzolino being crowned the World’s Pizza Champion at the 15th Pizza Chef World Championships in Naples in September 2016. He and his two partners, Francesco Crifo and Anthony Biviano, bring the taste of Naples to the Peninsula with all the flair you’d expect to see from authentic Sicilian natives who adore the Peninsula way of life. So what makes it so good? Anthony explains. “It’s the method in the pizza. The recipe comes from our ancestors and has been handed down for generations. It’s unfailing. Andrea has been flipping pizzas since he was 12 years old. He’s 28 now, so there’s a lot of experience behind him. He’s worked as a pizza chef in Italy and in Australia. He won the championship in 2016 with his margherita pizza. It’s quite a simple pizza, so there’s no room for error. It is so good.” Head down south this summer for a real slice of authentic Italian essence. Be transported to southern Italy where the flavours of the sea, sun and San Marzano tomatoes, mozzarella, basil and parmesan fit perfectly with the Mornington Peninsula’s family and friendship first atmosphere. Sip on a prosecco or espresso martini while sampling a selection of arancini balls, grilled octopus or calamari after a day at the beach, or while away the night dining on home-made baked gnocchi with Napoli sauce and buffalo mozzarella or risotto porcini linguine prawns. Then there’s the pizza! Whether it’s the world’s first

There’s lots of quality product on offer for beerlovers, so why not take full advantage of a service that prides itself on delivering an authentic experience whether in a minimum group of six or with a buddy on the only public brewery tour on the Peninsula. Jump on board for plenty of dazzling brew sampling, first-class food and chuckles while making new mates. Owner/operator Mitch Lacey, from Mornington, explains. “I’ve been involved with lots of breweries in the region and thought why not have a bus that gets punters to see what’s on offer. We do Mornington Peninsula and Bayside suburb tours throughout the week and weekends. You get to visit the best producers of beer around and chow down on great food while staying safe. Our motto is ‘drink, don’t drive’.” Ideal for corporate events, Brewery Bus Tours provides packages to suit everyone, including visits to wineries, distilleries and cider houses. You can swing a golf club too if you’re game.

A CHAT WITH OUR FOOD, WINE & DINING EXPERTS With more than 30 years’ experience in the industry, Eeny Meeny’s head chef, Rob Wright, speaks to Kate Sears about his commitment to bringing quirky and mouth-watering dishes to Frankston. Please describe your menu selections. It’s eclectic to say the least. We draw our inspiration from classic and contemporary dishes from around the world and add our own touch to make them unique to us. We always offer some absolute crowd favourites, but we also have some more exciting or unusual dishes for our more adventurous guests. What’s your go-to trend to serve up that customers are loving? When you talk about food trends for Australian cafes you can’t go past the “smashed avo”. We’ve put a Mexican twist on ours, by smashing the avocado with lime and serving it with chipotle aioli and a really fresh-tasting corn and black bean salsa. Recently, we ran a Japanese smashed avo

on our specials board which had Kewpie mayo, a poached egg, furikake seasoning, seaweed salad and Rice Krispies. Everyone loved it so much it’s a strong contender for the new permanent menu. For those who aren’t familiar with your restaurant, give us some insight into what makes Eeny Meeny different. We have great coffee. It’s organic, Fair Trade and Rainforest Alliance, roasted right here in Melbourne and made with such love and care that it has developed a strong local following. We also pride ourselves on serving up not only excellent quality dishes, but also great tasting dishes. We research a lot to ensure we constantly have exciting new additions to the menu for our guests’ enjoyment. What do your customers like about your menu/ venue? Our customers love the friendly, cosy vibe of Eeny Meeny. It’s like visiting friends. They love the lush sheltered courtyard where you can escape the hectic outside world all year round, and they love the creativity of our menu, always offering

something to challenge or delight them. Please tell us a little about your professional background. I have spent my life in this industry. As a little boy I would help my mum (or get in her way) while she did the catering at the local bowling club, and from there I never really left the kitchen. Professionally, it really began for me when I was kitchen hand for Stephanie Alexander. I was amazed at the way the kitchen worked as one to create such beautiful food and moments in people’s lives. I was hooked. I dropped out of uni and started a new journey of discovery. I have fed the masses at weddings in fields and catered to hundreds at yacht club functions. I’ve even fed the stars working out of the back of a truck on film and television catering, and now I’m here, happily providing the people of Frankston with something lovely to enjoy and remember. Any advice for aspiring chefs? My advice to aspiring chefs is to begin the journey because you are fascinated by food, by the way

Couple scoop the pool at Swimart awards A young Mornington couple have had outstanding success in their first year as owners of Swimart Mornington, picking up four awards at the annual Swimart Awards in Port Douglas. Jordan and Hayley Bedson took home Australasian Franchisee of the Year, Southern Region Franchisee of the Year, Southern Region Hot Shot of the Year, and Gold Franchisee — the highest number of awards presented to a single franchise partner. “We were surprised, grateful and proud of our effort,” Jordan said. “We knew we’d done well over the past year, but we didn’t realise how well! For us, the awards are a result of team effort and the support of our customers.” While Jordan has been a franchise owner for only a year, at just 29 years of age he has had 10 years’ experience in the pool care industry, including two years managing the Mornington franchise before purchasing it. From a young age he made it his goal to own his own store, so when the opportunity came up three years ago to manage the Mornington store, he didn’t hesitate to take it, even if it meant moving his young family from Yarra Valley to Mornington. Winning four awards is confirmation for Jordan that his focus on providing outstanding customer service and maintaining a strong team is working. “We work as a team, so our win was a team effort,” said Jordan, who runs the store with Hayley and 10 staff. “Building a good team is essential to a franchise’s success. If you employ the right people, your business will do

well. For me, the right people are those who offer great service, resolve issues quickly and build strong relationships with customers.” With warmer weather on the way, Jordan and Hayley are recommending customers get their pools and spas swim-ready by dropping in for a free water test. “Clean, safe water is vital for keeping your family happy and healthy,” Jordan said. “Our team can advise on the right treatments that will quickly return your pool and spa to top condition.” Swimart franchise development manager Alex Johnson said 35 years of success was proof that the pool and spa specialist’s formula of recognising outstanding performance and providing year-round vital know-how to all franchise partners works. Since 1983, Swimart has grown from a single retail store in Killara, NSW, into a trusted expert in pool and spa care with 75 stores across Australia and New Zealand and fleet of more than 220 mobile service vans. “We’re an agile company that’s customer focused and service orientated,” Alex said. “As franchisor support is crucial to each store’s success, we educate our franchise partners about how to get the most out of their investment by helping them create motivated, competent teams that offer a high level of service and keeping them abreast of the latest technological advances in pool and spa care.” SWIMART MORNINGTON A: 1128-1132 Nepean Highway, Mornington T: 5976 4334 W: swimart.com.au/store/vic/ mornington-3931 FB: SwimartMornington

BY LIZ ROGERS It’s springtime on the Mornington Peninsula, and Mount Eliza is celebrating with a garden festival on November 10 from 9am until 4pm. This inaugural event honouring all things plants and soil, whether in residential or communal gardens or along the coast, gets down to the nitty gritty of gardening for pleasure and production. Hosted at the Mt Eliza Community Centre and presented by the Mt Eliza Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Mt Eliza Neighbourhood House, the garden festival will bring an array of experts together to answer most of your tricky questions on how your garden grows. The Bonsai Society, landscape gardeners, plant specialists, including native plant experts and bee keepers will be on hand to discuss and suggest, while garden sculptures, lawn maintenance equipment, gardening services, plants and outdoor lighting will be on show. There’ll also be three great walks taking place throughout the day, including saunters through the Toorak College grounds, the historical Ranelagh Estate and the regenerated coastal planting area along the foreshore at the bottom of Williams Rd. A new project, Mt Eliza Neighbourhood House community garden, will also be launched in conjunction with the festival on the day. Get along to this great new community event to get your garden thriving and meet and greet like-minded people. A full program will be available soon. A green thumbs up to that! With a beautiful beginning to spring and the air and soil beginning to warm, now is the perfect time to get the majority of your warm-season crops in the ground. If you haven’t already propagated your seedlings you may want to go to the market or nursery to pick some up. But don’t skimp! It is well worth planting more than you think you’ll need because invariably something will happen to a few of your plants over the journey. And if they all make it and you end up with surplus … well, we’ve spoken enough about preserving and

sharing in this column for you to know what to do. Now, although excess crops of tomatoes, capsicum, spuds and cucumber provide us with many options, there are a few plants you may not want to go overboard with — in particular, zucchini and corn. For those just embarking on your foodgrowing journey, you will only require one zucchini plant for a family of four — two at the most. Any more and you may end up vying for the Biggest Zucchini prize in your neighbourhood. Corn can also be a little problematic if you don’t intend to preserve because you will find that most of your cobs will ripen around the same time and will need to be picked within a week or so to prevent them from becoming chewy. To get the most out of your garden this season, have a look at planting a number

of successive crops of the vegetables that you want to enjoy all summer. This means plant a few now, and then in three to four weeks plant another crop. Let’s take the corn, for example: for a family of four you may want to put in 6-12 plants now (depending on your corn consumption habits) and then sow another 6-12 in four weeks to provide you with a follow-up crop. If you get your first planting in early enough you may be able to squeeze a third crop in too! The same goes for your salad and vegetable greens, beetroot, carrots and bush-beans, to name a few. Successive plantings is where it’s at. Taking control of what is available yearround in your garden and kitchen very much depends upon the frequency of your plantings. So make a plan … and follow it!

Promoting a cleaner, greener peninsula by Liz Rogers

No landfill for e-waste or apparel In our quest to keep the Mornington Peninsula clean and green, we’ve got some helpful hints on where to recycle your e-waste and clothes which should never go into your regular bin, let alone landfill. Electronic waste (e-waste) is anything around the home that has a plug, cord and/ or battery. These items contain valuable resources that can be reused elsewhere, and because they often contain harmful chemicals or toxins they should be disposed of through correct channels. Free e-waste disposal centres operate in Rye, Tyabb and at the Mornington Resource Recovery Centre, although fees do apply for fridges, freezers and airconditioners. Mobile phones can be dropped at major phone retailers. To find out more, visit mornpen.vic.gov.au/ disposalguide If you’ve got a wardrobe full of clothing you never wear, there’s someone who will. Bag it up and drop by one of the many

Mount Eliza, Mornington, Dromana and Rosebud op shops. There’s more than 10 in Mornington alone, so there’s no excuse, or you could get crafty and turn it into something new yourself. Remember Boomerang Bags using recycled materials as an alternative to plastic bags? Mornington Peninsula Shire Council, in conjunction with SCRgroup (one of Australia’s largest clothing and homewares reuse and recycling companies) piloted a pop-up clothing and electrical drop-off hub program earlier in the year and more than 603kg of waste was diverted to the Rosebud and Sorrento sites. The project was funded by the State Government’s Litter Innovation Fund and delivered by Sustainability Victoria. Recycling e-waste and clothing is purely habitual and easy. If you’re looking to offload the green stuff — garden waste — this month, the council is also offering no-charge disposal from October 19-21.

TILE AND GROUT CLEANING

Porcelain floor tiles

Here’s how to get your porcelain and ceramic floor tiles and grout to gleam and sparkle like new, with our tile cleaning, grout cleaning service. Our clients are absolutely astounded when they see this system actually work on their own floors, and you will be too. This exciting system does not just remove years of built up dirt and grime from tiled floors, it also removes detergent residues from the grout lines. Detergent residues can make the grout lines appear discoloured and patchy. In fact, detergents actually make the grout more porous, thereby collecting more dirt. This spoils the look of your floors and leads to them resoling relatively quickly.

Ceramic Floor Tiles

By removing detergent residues, as well as soils, grout lines return their original colour, and, with a little care, you will be able to keep your floor looking cleaner for longer.
