A one-of-a-kind weekend retreat in mindful parenting and self compassion skills for mothers is coming to Mt Martha in October. Mama Camp is the brainchild of Mornington Peninsula mum and mental health social worker Melissa Rowe, who has worked with mothers on wellness and mindfulness for years, both one-on-one and in group settings. It builds on Ms Rowe’s recent series of Mindful Mama sessions in Carrum, where mothers delved into the evidence-based practice of mindfulness and self compassion, blended with the ancient practice of sitting in a circle and in a community with women, discovering and sharing innate wisdom. The response, she said, had been “overwhelming”, with one mother saying this: “I recommend this to any mother wanting that ‘time out’ for herself and to re-centre themselves from the daily challenges of life.
I love the honesty and rawness of this group... Mindful Mamas is the best thing I have done for myself to date.” The Mama Camp vision was to cater for a small group of women but once the event was released on Facebook, thousands showed interest. Mama Camp will be held from October 7-9 in Mt Martha and it will see mothers come together for a full weekend to deeply rest in a tailored, immersive retreat. The camp is intended to create a lasting impact on participants’ wellbeing. Mindfulness and compassion skills will be gently woven through a weekend of sleep-ins, slow living, connection with self and others, yoga, massage, circle, reflection, sacred dance, immersive meditation, food, music, moving performances, guided mindful creative workshops and sharing of wisdom. Young passionate educator Last month the Toorak College community formally welcomed its 16th principal, Mrs Kristy Kendall, with an induction ceremony. It was an event to be remembered, with moving speeches and exceptional musical performances by students. Previously Mrs Kendall held the position of Head of Edrington, Haileybury’s Berwick campus, prior to this she was Head of Senior Girls and led the establishment of Haileybury’s Girls College in 2007. In 2011 she completed her school principal’s training at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education. “We entered our recruitment process with high expectations, and we were genuinely excited by the quality of the applicants that we received,” explains Mr Peter Wickenden, the Chairman of the Toorak College Board of Directors. “One of those applicants was Kristy Kendall, a relatively young, passionate educator who had clearly demonstrated leadership in her career to date. Kristy possessed an infectious energy and drive that we perceived would not only maintain our trajectory but would accelerate our momentum. We were clear that in Kristy we would have a principal and a leader that would see our students
at the forefront of new educational opportunities. Kristy is a woman who embodies the essence of our much revered Toorak spirit. The students are eager to engage with her and appreciate her open door, they are inspired by her.” At the conclusion of the ceremony Mrs Kendall gave students, staff, parents and guests a special gift to commemorate the event. “The daisy represents the school emblem,” she says, “they are a symbol of humility and goodness, and it is my wish that members of Toorak College spread humility and goodness within our community and far and wide. Past Principal, Miss Ellen Pye (1899 – 1907), commented that daisies turn their head to the sun, so my hope is for all our students to turn their heads to the sun and be proud of the person they are.” Toorak College has a long and successful history on the Mornington Peninsula. It is a school filled with energy and vitality and a commitment to achieving excellence. Toorak College graduates stand out, they are spirited, resilient and well-rounded young women. As adults they continue to strive for their personal best and pursue their ambitions with confidence.

Everything we love about the peninsula, fresh every month
BY LIZ ROGERS
It’s 1972 and a steamy Australia Day weekend means pulling on your hotpants and tank top and hitting the road on the hunt for a 620 acre farm between Sunbury and Diggers Rest – home to the Sunbury Festival. What will you find? Who will you see and hear? Will you get in? There’s always a first time for everything. That’s one thing John Fowler, who is sitting in the Lake Boga Observatory near Swan Hill discovering other worldly skies as we speak, knows for sure. He’s been through many firsts in his 85 years on the planet because he gets ideas and he likes to make them happen. Back in his GTV Nine days in lighting when “television was exciting and experimental” and he worked with the likes of Graham Kennedy on ‘In Melbourne Tonight’, he and his co-worker and Sunbury Festival cohort Peter Evans didn’t have much of an idea about how successful this Aussie icon festival was going to be. But this Frankston-bred boy does remember all four of them vividly.
“Sunbury was supposed to be booze free. Kids were passing bottles through the fence. A farmer at the back of the site was charging $3 to let the ones without tickets in! We had lights to check for kids scrambling over fences and bringing in grog. There were 35,000 at the first one”, John explains. (Many years later when he was at a performing arts exhibition in Sunbury a guy came up to him and gave him five bucks saying ‘that’s for the entry to Sunbury. I never paid’.) “We even had a church service on Sundays with a band that belonged to the church”, he continues. The Sunbury Festivals are etched in our country’s rock and cultural psyche because they were the first music festivals to really give Aussie music a go in the 70s. There were only two radio stations (3XY and 3AK) playing tunes

Magazine
back then and John and his team were determined to create a place where Australian rock would have its day. Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs, Daddy Cool, Skyhooks and Captain Matchbox took charge at night. Johnny O’Keefe was initially booed (so was the late great Freddie Mercury when Queen headlined in 1974) but became the star of the show. Deep Purple played in 1975, and that was it. “Deep Purple was expensive and we had problems with rain insurance. These two things ended it”, says John, but it didn’t finish this Frankston Theatre lighting trained man’s career. He’s lit the Channel Nine Ballet, the opening of the Sydney Entertainment Centre in the 80’s, the lighting of the trees outside the Arts Centre and
Hamer Hall and the Myers building for ‘Winter in the City’. He’s always loved the notion of art and science working together (he’s also won an award from the Television Society of Australia and was at the helm of the push for the development of the Frankston Marina that was shot down by Labor premier John Cain). “I spent a good few years working on that one. It would have cost $9million then and we’d done all the environmental checks. It’d cost $30million now.” These days this father of five – he lost his only daughter two years ago to cancer – spends much of his time planet watching and star gazing with his wife Marianne at the Observatory in the Mallee. Those wild days of Sunbury may have gone, but Mr Fowler’s light-filled presence irrepressibly shines on.

Sarah is a TV and Radio traffic reporter for Sunrise, 7 News Melbourne and Kiis 101.1. Chances are you’ve seen her on television, heard her on radio, queued up with her for a coffee at Bayside Shopping Centre or attended the same school as her in Frankston. That’s because Sarah is a Mornington Peninsula girl, born and bred. But more than that, she’s a proud and passionate advocate of the region who chooses to commute to the city for her media career because she loves the peninsula lifestyle and has family here. “I definitely don’t love the early starts,” she admits over a coffee at Sofia’s in Frankston. “I don’t know how anyone could love 3am wake-up calls. But I love living here. I love the beach, all the way from Portsea to the city. I’ve travelled all around the world and I don’t think there’s any other place like it.” Hers is a hectic working week that involves television crosses from the Melbourne Traffic Chopper each
weekday morning between 6am and 9am on Sunrise and in the afternoons at 4.30pm for 7 News Melbourne. She does radio crosses for Kiis 101.1 every 15 minutes between 5.30am and 9am and 2.30pm-7pm, is an occasional entertainment reporter for Yahoo! 7 Entertainment, a professional voice-over artist, a digital content producer and more. In the chopper, it’s full throttle. “There’s no time for writing scripts, it’s all looking out the window as we’re flying around,’’ she says. So, what does this local girl do when she switches off on the weekend? “Mum and I go antiquing in Tyabb a lot,” she says. “We live our lives there.” She’s also a big fan of Peninsula Hot Springs, loves a weekend drive down Flinders way and enjoys the local wineries, restaurants and beaches, of course. As for that traffic, that’s a doubleedged sword for this rising star of Australian media: “Sometimes I do get stuck in it myself!” she says. Not all learning happens sitting in a classroom. At Chisholm, learning is hands-on, where students experience real–world
simulated workplace environments. Not only do students receive these simulated surroundings, but Chisholm Mornington Peninsula also offers external services to the public so students are exposed to external clients and can hone
their skills in a real-life setting. Situated on Boneo Rd, Rosebud, Chisholm Mornington Peninsula has a number of professional training spaces including a beauty room, hair salon and health laboratory. Each space offers students essential skills required for successful employment related to their profession. The beauty room and hair salon are fully equipped spaces that allow students to learn in a real work environment. Students are required to model employment practices during their learning, with both the beauty room and hair salon open to external clients. This helps develop the student’s abilities and provides a valuable service to the local community, a key focus for the campus. The third specialised facility at Rosebud is the fully equipped health laboratory which houses up-to-date equipment. Big shoes to fill BY ANDREA KELLETT
Chris Crewther is the fresh-faced 32-year-old preselected by the Liberal Party to replace retiring Dunkley MP Bruce Billson at the upcoming federal election and he’s under no illusion about the shoes he has to fill. The Frankston business consultant, lawyer and father has put his business on hold to focus on his campaign. Crewther’s head is full of ideas, issues and statistics about the electorate but his eight-month-old daughter Yasmin - his and wife Grace’s first child - keeps him grounded. His phone is full of family happy snaps and the businessman with two Masters degrees says fatherhood makes him better prepared for public life. “I think you connect with a lot of people who have families,” he says. “Like many families who’ve made this area home, we’ve made this area our home. It’s a great area to raise a family.” Crewther’s interest in public life started as a teenager thanks to Youth Parliament and it has, he says, stayed with him. He has a Bachelor of Laws (Hons), a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice, a Master of Laws specialising in International Law and a Master of Diplomacy. He

has worked as an international lawyer with the United Nations in Kosovo, served as an advisor to Liberal Senator Michael Ronaldson, worked as a lawyer in private practice and government, and headed up the Mildura Development Corporation for two years. When the opportunity arose to contest the country seat of Mallee for the Liberals in 2013 he took it. “I’ve always been interested in the way politics shapes society. No matter where you live in the world politics shapes the way you live. I actually want to make a positive difference in society,” he explains. The Crewthers live in Frankston and he says voters can expect many things from him, including advocacy for better local infrastructure, better health services, local solutions to the ice scourge, investment in education and more. And returning to that metaphor of shoes, it seems there’s a literal pair Crewther is filling right now too – he plans to run the length of the Dunkley electorate to raise funds for local charity That’s The Thing About Fishing. Brighter futures at Fusion
“Homelessness isn’t just about having a home, it’s about having a community or somewhere you belong.”
With those words Steph Byrne sums up what sets Fusion Mornington Peninsula apart from other services supporting young people across the peninsula. It also gives an insight into what drives the people behind the largely volunteer-run service. Fusion is a national not-for-profit Christian youth and community organisation and it has been offering supported accommodation for Mornington Peninsula’s youth for more than 30 years. Home is an old army barracks in Mt Martha owned by the council, government funding is minimal, most of the workers are volunteers and the impact of their work is often life changing.
The Mornington Peninsula Magazine asked Byrne, from Mt Eliza, what is so special about Fusion that she is prepared to give up her time, full time, for it? “I was doing a degree in political philosophy and doing youth leading and that’s when I met (team leader) Gemma and got a feel for what was going on here,” she explains. “I started volunteering three days a week then I went on the pilgrimage to Uluru and for me that was when I was sold. I sat next to a young man and we became friends and I could see the impact of that. I saw the power of normal people doing extraordinary things in normal moments, like having dinner together.” Fusion accommodates up to eight young people at a time any most have experienced social isolation, family breakdown, unemployment and more. They do the simple things like cooking and sharing meals together and run a range of programs. This year Fusion Mornington Peninsula plans to expand its youth work in schools and the wider community and renovate its building. You can contribute by taking part in the August fundraising event Sleep in Your Car, where participants sleep rough for a night to raise awareness and funds, or by in-kind support. More than $30K raised for Charity Foundation jockeys, industry executives and footballers have gathered for a Charity Golf Day and Dinner.
More than 104 golfers, racing enthusiasts, AFL players and sponsors of the Melbourne Racing Club gathered at Kingston Heath Golf Club last month to raise money for the MRC Foundation’s first annual Charity Golf Day and Dinner. The Schweppes team, led by their State Sales Manager Adam Quince, took out overall honours on the day ahead of the Codeware and Foley Durham teams. While jockey Damien Oliver - who plays off a single-digit handicap – was expected to star on the green, Melbourne FC footballers Jack Watts, Bernie Vince and Chris Dawes surprised everyone by showing they may have a career on the MAY 2016 (54)
fairway after football. More than $30,000 was raised for the MRC Foundation thanks to some spirited bidding during the dinner auction including a VIP Caulfield Cup experience selling for $10,600. The package features direct helicopter flights to and from the racecourse and a lunch in the Committee Room. “We are thrilled. It was great to see so many people in the sports industry enjoy the golf and show their charitable side to help raise money for a good cause,” MRC CEO and MRC Foundation board member Brodie Arnhold said. The money will go towards supporting the Foundation’s three key areas: • Support for the MRC Foundation’s charity partners including OzHarvest, National Jockey’s Trust and Down
Syndrome Victoria; • Helping charitable and community organisations to address societal issues; • Supporting local organisations in the communities around the MRC’s three racecourses (Caulfield, Mornington and Ladbrokes Park) and 13 Pegasus Leisure Group venues. AFL journalist Mike Sheahan showed off his skills winning the ‘nearest the pin’ competition on the Par 3 (hole 5). This event was proudly presented by Ladbrokes and associate presenter Taylor Made. The Melbourne Racing Club is a not for profit members club with over 25,000 members across racing and venue businesses. They conduct 68 race meetings annually across three premier Victorian racetracks, Caulfield, Mornington and Ladbrokes Park. MRC Foundation is the recently established charitable arm of the Melbourne Racing Club.

Racecourse to turn red for MS fundraiser BY ANDREA KELLETT
Frankston South’s Donna BradleyRobinson will bring a touch of red to the Mornington Racecourse in May when she hosts a special fundraising event supporting research into multiple sclerosis and support services for people living
with the disease. The 51-year-old will stage the inaugural Scarlet Cup on May 29 and funds raised will support the MS Ambassador program, MS Support Services, MS Connect programs and new MS research projects. It is a cause close to the former police officer’s heart – she has been living with MS for 35 years. Ms Bradley-Robinson was diagnosed at the age of 29 after experiencing symptoms since she was 16 years old. She was forced to give up policing in 2010 as her condition worsened and she now raises funds to support people living with MS. She is also raising funds to bring a special art program for people with MS to the Mornington Peninsula. The Scarlet Cup is gathering momentum and shaping up as a gala event with Channel 9 ‘Postcards’ presenter Brodie Harper – born and raised on the Mornington Peninsula – confirmed as host, local judges locked in for Fashions on the Field, silent and live auctions planned, a Calcutta horse race, a raffle and more. Scarlet Cup guests will enjoy local food and wine on the day. Bradley-Robinson’s
dress, makeup and hair are all being done by Mornington Peninsula small businesses and she will auction off her red silk 1950s vintage couture gown by Lynne Herring of Gorgeous, and matching millinery by Shara Gillahan Millinery, on the day. “I’ll be live auctioning the dress and hat to guests,” she said. Multiple sclerosis is an incurable, chronic, and often disabling disease that randomly attacks and scars the protective insulation that surrounds the nerve fibres in the brain and spinal cord. The progress, severity and symptoms vary and symptoms range from tingling and numbness to paralysis and blindness. The Scarlet Cup is at the Mornington Racecourse on Sunday, May 29, 12noon - 5pm. Tickets cost $120 each, or $1100 for a table of 10. Dress is race or lounge attire with a touch of red. NBN rolls into town BY ANDREA KELLETT
Connection, or lack of it, has become something of a buzzword on the Mornington Peninsula, particularly when it comes to mobile phone coverage and the rollout of the National Broadband Network. Politicians say fast and reliable internet access is on its way, if not already switched on for the lucky minority, and those who live and work in the Dunkley electorate should be feeling a whole lot more connected soon. Dunkley federal Liberal MP Bruce Billson announced in October that all Dunkley premises were on track to have the NBN delivered by the end of 2017, a “decade earlier and far cheaper than expected under the previous Labor government”. Mornington Peninsula Shire Council has also welcomed the Federal Government’s announcement for the rollout across the shire and its detailed construction plans. But what does it all mean? Many are confused about the timing of NBN connection to their homes and businesses and some have taken to social media to vent about internet drop-outs and slow speeds during NBN works and even after connection. Thousands MAY 2016 (54)
of local active connections have been rolled out in parts of Frankston, Karingal, Langwarrin, Langwarrin South, Mt Eliza and Frankston South. In Mt Eliza, 2705 premises are live with Fibre to the Premises technology, 4404 are under construction with that technology and the rest will have Fibre to the Node technology, with work expected to start in the second half of 2017. Work has started in Mornington, but it is early-stage ground work to prepare the area for the NBN. On the benefits, Victorian nbn spokesman Michael Moore explains: “Once connected, the nbn™ network will present opportunities in education, business, entertainment, health care and sociability and give local businesses and residents the potential to be more productive, more creative, more efficient and more connected for decades to come.” For more on your connection, NBN Co has a search option on its website www.nbnco.com.au where you can enter your address to find out your NBN status and Telstra has colour-coded maps. If you register your details, NBN Co will notify you by email when you can connect to the network.

Jade Szonyi, travel blogger, Mum With Wings
Mt Eliza’s Jade Szonyi is a mother of two, an international flight attendant and a travel blogger with a rising Instagram profile. This month marks the first anniversary of the 32-yearold’s blog Mum With Wings (@ mumwithwings) and in that time she has racked up 16,100 Instagram followers. She reflects on how it all happened Tell us about Mum With Wings and how you got those 16,000plus Instagram followers! I am a local Mornington Peninsula mother of two (Lottie, 6, and Sol, 3) and I have been an international QANTAS flight attendant for more than 10 years. I love looking after families on board and I
was nicknamed the ‘on board nanny’ at QANTAS way before I even had my own children. I LOVE taking my children travelling around the world. Travelling teaches children so much and I believe it to be the best way to learn. My first overseas trip was to Sri Lanka when I was seven and it was a life-changing experience. I started Mum With Wings because my friends and their friends were constantly messaging me and asking for advice before they travelled with their children. So I decided to condense my experiences and knowledge into a blog. I want to encourage more families to travel and not be so scared of the thought. If parents are prepared before the flight, the journey will be much smoother once in the air.
Mention this ad when booking your session to receive a complimentary 8 x 12” lustre print!
Social media is an amazing platform for sharing my tips. Mum With Wings has had a great response and has grown very quickly. It has also been a really good creative outlet for me. Before I was a flight attendant I studied Media and Communications at RMIT, I’ve always loved writing and photography, but nothing too technical, it has to be fun! Social media gives me that freedom to not take things too seriously. I reply to every comment and question on my social media channels, I think interacting with my audience has helped it grow, I’ve also done a few things for QANTAS’ social media and an Expedia Blog which gave me huge exposure to a global audience. The content I share does really help families, I think that’s why it’s been well received. I’m a real mum doing what I love. I’ve assisted thousands of families on international flights over the last 10 years and I have learnt from their experiences too. That’s the knowledge I draw from. I also really appreciate what we have here on the Mornington Peninsula and I think like a tourist in my own back yard. I love sharing the best of my home region. The peninsula is such an amazing place for families, I do lots of local reviews and family friendly Mornington Peninsula posts. I often have the opportunity to serve Mornington Peninsula wines when I’m working in first class on board the QANTAS A380 and this makes me so proud of my home. What’s a normal day like for you? I am really just a normal local mum. It’s the school run, the kinder run, cooking dinner, coffee at local cafes. I fly parttime so I only go to work once or twice a

Favourite local spots? I LOVE all our peninsula beaches and our national parks, Seawinds and The Briars, especially in autumn. I love visiting the wineries in Red Hill. Flinders is such a beautiful place. Sorrento. Too many! I can’t choose. I like mixing it up and exploring different areas. My hammock in my backyard might just be my favourite spot. Favourite destinations with children? Hawaii would have to be the most childfriendly place that I have been. Little things like kids’ drinks being served in a takeaway cup with a lid and straw are really big things when travelling with kids. An immigration line with priority for families can be so nice at the end of a long flight. I have loved taking my kids around Europe and the USA. Closer to home we have had amazing adventures in Laos, Thailand and Indonesia. MUM WITH WINGS W: www.mumwithwings.com.au Instagram: mumwithwings FB: www.facebook.com/Mumwithwings

month max. I feel like a stay-at-home mum who gets a break in a hotel room in LA or Dubai every now and then. My blog is something I do when I can. I don’t put too much pressure or deadlines on myself to get that done. If the sun is shining I take the kids to the beach. The blog post can wait. I post on my Instagram a few times a day and I like to try to get one new blog post published every week if I can. The content has now built up on the blog and it really is a great resource for me to direct the many questions I receive daily to.

Smallpox at Portsea Quarantine Station, 1891 Did you know the Mornington Peninsula had a potentially devastating smallpox scare 125 years ago? A ship and its infected crew ran aground 100m off the beach near the Portsea Quarantine Station in 1891. Peninsula Ship Society president Maurie Hutchinson explains what happened.
Usually a ship’s captain and crew fear their ship being stranded, but when the four-masted barque Kelton ran aground, all were pleased. She had sailed from Glasgow, bound for Rio, on 25 July, 1890, on her maiden voyage. After her cargo was unloaded in Rio, she sailed for New Caledonia but some of the crew had been infected with smallpox. Smallpox is a serious, contagious, and sometimes fatal infectious disease that has now been eradicated thanks to a worldwide vaccination program. Symptoms first appeared on the fifth day after departure and the disease quickly spread through the crew. One man died
and, at times, two thirds of the crew were ill and unable to work. The worst affected was the captain who was close to death for several weeks. As the Kelton neared Bass Strait the captain decided to bring his vessel into Port Phillip to seek aid. At 1.30 pm on December 30, 1890, she grounded on sand about 100m off the beach near the quarantine station at Portsea. The next morning she was towed free, anchored off the quarantine station and the seriously ill were taken ashore. Those who had not yet contracted the disease were vaccinated. Housed at the hospital and cared for by a doctor and nurses from Melbourne, the seriously ill were isolated within a 3m-high corrugated iron fence with spikes cut at the top. Provisions for those in the isolation area were delivered onto a shelf and a bell was rung to indicate they could be collected without contact between those on either side of the fence. A group of nine constables patrolled the area. There was serious concern in Melbourne as an outbreak of smallpox was greatly feared. At that time, vaccination was compulsory
in the UK with penalties for those who refused to comply. Many of the Kelton’s crew had therefore been vaccinated and experienced less serious symptoms. After a period of quarantine and fumigation of the vessel, it was granted pratique on January 30 and towed to Williamstown.
The Kelton departed from Port Phillip on March 4 with a full cargo of wheat and arrived at London on June 15, 1891. Her maiden voyage took six weeks short of a year. Maurie Hutchinson President, Peninsula Ship Society

Woodleigh
School Leading the Way RIGHT ACROSS OUR THREE CAMPUSES, Woodleigh School is deeply engaged in the continued development of our learning programs. Our collaborative research projects with Harvard University, the University of Melbourne and Claire Warden’s Nature Pedagogy network each give Woodleigh a key role in developing action based enquiries into existing programs, as well as informing updates and opportunities to develop new programs for the future. By reaching out and broadening our network Woodleigh is able to draw on the ideas and experiences of others, and importantly, have a platform to share our model and its various successes, both in Australia and internationally via the Round Square Schools Network. Through these collaborative projects we consistently find that Woodleigh School’s teaching and learning programs, and our approach to learning environment design are widely regarded as at the leading edge of educational thinking. Most important however are the consistent findings that our methods and environments are highly successful in achieving the outcomes all contemporary educationalists strive to
( 36
achieve: a strong academic foundation for the future, and the development of lifelong learning skills which prepare students well for their futures. Time and time again we see that the authenticity of our learning, and the fact that we are able to engage our students in real, lived learning experiences, is the driver of this success. The research continues to promote the theory that it is programs which encourage students to engage directly with the world that best prepare students for futures that are unpredictable and unknown – to adapt, and develop the skills to respond accordingly. As the educational sector struggles to find the best way to evolve to meet the rapidly changing learning needs of our students, it is good to know that the Woodleigh model of student-centred, experience-driven schooling is increasingly referred to as a reference point for others. Three hot tips to reach your customers online Still wrapping your head around social media in your business? Bartercard lists three essentials when it comes to tapping into your market online and leveraging your brand socially. Choose platforms that support your brand Platforms that fit your brand and feel authentic will always create better results when it comes to attracting followers and converting sales. Retailers rely heavily on imagery and love Instagram, which has 400 million+ users and has expanded its tools to include longer video, but also recently announced an upcoming departure from chronology-based feeds to interaction-based curation. When it comes to other platforms, Google+ can be effective in reaching technology-focused consumers, while LinkedIn is a stronger choice for the B2B sector (entrepreneur.com). Facebook will support virtually any brand and has approximately 1.49 billion monthly active users world-wide (statistica.com). Leverage influencers If you are a start-up it can take years to build a base of followers on your own. Tagging a well-followed brand on Instagram that chooses to add you to their feed can reach thousands of followers instantly. Comment, share and repost openly and frequently – you will find other brands will do the same for you.
Use the latest technology to create quality content The best social media marketers are sticklers for quality - this means no pixelated photos and using the latest technology and expertise to make your message stick. When it comes to images, poor lighting, positioning and styling can all break the formula for a well-shared post and erode the credibility of your brand – research and follow what the best brands are doing to meet the industry standard. Bartercard is the world’s largest trade exchange with 24,000 members across almost every industry imaginable. We know small business inside out and work with members to conserve cash flow, attract new customers and grow profits. Want more tips like these? There are endless ways to build your business. The minute you stop believing that is the minute you’re giving up. Brainstorming and implementing ideas for growth should be scheduled into your (yes, already very busy) week. It should become a hobby, a mindset, a reflex. Always have an open mind to possibilities and opportunities and you will see them popping up before you. 1. C onnect with likeminded people Search for local networking groups, a meetup.com event or a co-working space and meet others who are also passionate about what they do. 2. J oin other business owners online There are many Facebook groups out there - find one for your type of business, your industry or your local area. It’s about community. Building a business can be tough, so it’s important to connect with others to share ideas with and have a support network.
3. G et in touch with your local council Most councils will have an economic development unit, designed to support local businesses. We’re fortunate to have helpful and supportive teams within the Mornington Peninsula Shire and Frankston City councils and they offer a variety of workshops and resources for small businesses. Make the most of them! 4. C ollaborate Identify businesses with likeminded customers and talk to them about how you could work together on something that would benefit both parties’ target audiences.

G.J. Gardner Homes now on the Mornington Peninsula Franchised homebuilder G.J. Gardner Homes has opened an office on the Mornington Peninsula. The owners of the new franchise are director Scott Doughty and business manager Judy Corcoran and both are excited about bringing the strength of the G.J. Gardner brand to the peninsula and high-quality, functional designs to this scenic area. “Many people are now looking for not only a stylish, practical and comfortable place to live, but also an environmentally responsible home,” Mr Doughty said. “With access to the latest building technology and 9 star-plus designs already part of GJ’s range, you’re sure to find exactly what you’ve been envisioning.” Ross Morley, managing director of Victoria and Tasmania for G.J. Gardner Homes, said the varied G.J. offerings would suit the many second and third-home-owner markets along the Mornington Peninsula. “While we have the Prestige range of designs that I feel will appeal to this market, our builds do often incorporate a certain amount of customisation on most clients’ homes, especially those clients who have owned or built a home previously. They know what they want and we like to accommodate,” he said. If you are interested in speaking with the Mornington Peninsula team about building your next home, visit the Main St office or call to make an appointment on 5975 1122. G.J. No nasties at Bulk Whole Foods Did you know that what you put on your skin ends up in your body? With so many lotions and potions, plus lots of “clever” advertising out there, it can be difficult to know what to choose, right? The team at Bulk Whole Foods felt the same way. So Bulk Whole Foods decided to put together a range of all their favourite ‘no-nasties’ products to take the guess work out of it for you. Founder and owner of Bulk Whole Foods and the Bulk Whole Foods Market Bibi

60 Mount Eliza Way 9787 2953 www.manyunggallery.com.au staff@manyunggallery.com.au
48 years and Manyung is moving! The marvellous Manyung Gallery has been located in the old castle building on Nepean Highway, Mt Eliza since 1968. For almost a half century this haven for the creative has been a key contributor to the art community. Local, interstate launched and thousands of paintings and sculptures have changed hands. Owners David and Sharyn Wemyss-Smith explain. “High rent and occupancy costs have made the site no longer viable. It’s a shame to leave such an iconic art environment, but we need to remain a viable art business.” A new Manyung will be launched at 60 Mount Eliza Way, Mt Eliza in early May to continue the brand’s presence in Mt Eliza. This site and the other Manyung galleries located in Sorrento and Malvern, will be supported by a centrally located ‘Art Warehouse’ being established in Mornington. “Manyung Gallery will remain at the forefront of presenting affordable, high quality Australian artworks and sculpture”, continues David. The first exhibition at the new gallery, timing tba soon, will feature Japanese artists, jewellers and poets [ with a book signing ] .....a new cultural exposure for Mt Eliza. The group will be setting up Pop Up galleries in targeted suburbs of Melbourne and will continue its consolidation in Singapore, participating in its ninth exhibition in April. The mobile gallery service will operate from 60 Mt Eliza Way, Mt Eliza.

Vibrant colours will feature in Whistlewood Gallery’s Winter Salon exhibition over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend in June. More than 80 paintings by leading Aboriginal artists and rising stars from five regions will be on show, selected by Whistlewood curators Susan McCulloch OAM and Emily McCulloch Childs. They include multi-hued paintings of women’s ceremonies by Utopia artists Emily Pwerle, Barbara Weir and Charmaine Pwerle; jewel-like landscapes and bush medicine stories by Ampilatwatja artists of the Eastern desert; glowing works by Western desert artists from Yuendumu and Papunya; new canvases by leading artists of the APY Lands; and striking monochromatic and pastel-coloured paintings. For the unique Art Parade presentation that opens the exhibition, works will be grouped into themes according to colour and paraded while Ms McCulloch provides commentary. “For many people the range
of colours used by Aboriginal artists is a revelation,” she explains. “Many of the artists live in very arid areas - but even there the colours of the land, sky, trees and salt plains is of dazzling intensity.” “Many colours also have special meanings for Aboriginal people and you see this in paintings as well. I remember the response of one leading artist from the Western desert years ago when I asked him why the painters in his community had come to use so many brilliant colours. He laughed as though it was really obvious, gestured widely and said ‘look, look! Colour is all around us’.” The Art Parade is on Saturday, June 11, at 2.30pm, places limited and bookings essential at www.mccullochart.eventbrite. com.au Exhibition open Sunday, June 12, and Monday, June 13,10.30am - 4pm. A happy 21st birthday for the Frankston Arts Centre It has been 21 years since the Frankston Arts Centre, formerly known as the Frankston Cultural Centre, opened on May 20, 1995, by then Prime Minister Paul Keating.
May is the centre’s official birthday month and visitors and community members are invited to help celebrate this momentous event. A celebration cocktail is available to mark the occasion as well as a memorabillia wall with a special area for the public to leave birthday messages. The Frankston Arts Centre’s construction was a much anticipated process and took 20 years to plan. The project included the library, toy library and an underground car park, and cost approximately $18.5 million, funded primarily by Frankston Council, with additional funding from federal and state governments. The community also worked hard to raise a further $1 million, allowing vision to become reality. Over the past 21 years, the centre has welcomed many wonderful Australian and international performers as well as a plethora of renowned theatrical companies to the stage. Aside from this, many high-calibre local theatre companies including PLOS Musical Productions, Panorama Theatre and Frankston Music Society have performed annually at the centre. It presents an opportunity to hear from one of the world’s greats in the glow of candlelight. Piers Lane is the artistic director of both the Australian Festival of Chamber Music and the Sydney International Piano Competition and he has performed in the world’s great concert halls. Chopin by Candlelight will feature a variety of works, including Fantasie in F minor Op. 49, Etude in E major Op 10. No. 3 (Tristesse), Bacarolle Op. 60, and Polonaise in F sharp minor. “Chopin remains unsurpassed as a composer for the piano. He knew how to make the instrument sing at its lyrical best. The music speaks eloquently to people everywhere of the beauty, the heartbreak, the dance, the yearning, the rhythm, the soul, of life itself,” Lane explains. The recital is presented by Andrew McKinnon and the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre. The group were woken early by Danielle from MP Experience who drove the group to Peninsula Hot Springs where they watched the sunrise from the hilltop pool in the Bath House. After enjoying breakfast in the Spa Dreaming Centre, the group were driven to Lindenderry Estate where they wandered around the beautiful gardens before indulging in a five-course meal with matched wines. After lunch the group meandered along Sorrento Main Street and shopped in some of the beautiful boutiques in Sorrento Village, before embarking on a unique Bongo Transit tour of some of Sorrento’s most historic sights. After their Bongo adventure, they watched the sunset on Sorrento back beach while enjoying dinner at All Smiles. After a big day of exploring the Mornington Peninsula the group ended the weekend relaxing by the fire in their luxurious rooms at Lindenderry. Mental Health Australia and Peninsula Hot Springs: - 'a natural friendship' Peninsula Hot Springs has become the first Corporate Friend of Mental Health Australia, supporting the peak body in its mission to create the best mental health system in the world. “Peninsula Hot Springs (PHS) has a deep and fundamental desire to improve the wellbeing of Australians and connects well with the work of Mental Health Australia,” Mental Health Australia’s CEO, Frank Quinlan said at the launch of the partnership. Mental Health Australia is the peak charity organisation representing the mental health sector in Australia, representing national service providers and advocacy organisations including beyondblue, headspace, Lifeline and ReachOut, while also facilitating a voice for local organisations and people who live with mental illness. “We work tirelessly to provide frank and fearless advice to government and the sector, building connection, relationships and facilitating a voice for those who live with mental illness every day. Only a truly independent organisation can push for the creation of a new mental health system, one we need and deserve. Our friendship with the Hot Springs helps us to do just that, we are proud to be associated with them.” Peninsula Hot Springs Global & Community Relationship Manager Yuki Davidson said the partnership “signifies the PHS
commitment to tangible and active involvement in improving mental health in Australia.” “This friendship with Mental Health Australia is natural evolution of our wellbeing program and third stage in PHS growth, where mental and physical wellbeing has been a primary driver to our wellness destination for over 10 years”. Peninsula Hot Springs CEO and co-founder Charles Davidson said: “Peninsula Hot Springs welcomes more than 440,000 guests each
year seeking relaxation, escape and time out. Our PHS purpose statement is ‘to create experiences where people relax in nature and connect with the deep well of their being’ - the Mental Health Australia Friendship now signifies our involvement beyond creating the beneficial experiences, to include PHS advocacy, education and research for both mental and physical wellbeing”. “Recent collaborative research with RMIT university at PHS has demonstrated that hot springs bathing
has a community role, our hot pools are not merely provider of relaxation and wellbeing. We are increasingly being recognised as a destination for regular therapy of balneology for everything from back pain to depression,” Mr Davidson said. “RMIT research shows us that visitation to PHS has major results for many who report they have stress, anxiety or depression. Among the nearly 4000 regular visitors surveyed, ‘significant relief’ was reported by 38% of those who said they had depression and 48% of those who said they had stress/anxiety. “The Peninsula Hot Springs extended family recently had an intimate insight into, and hold a sincere empathy for, the devastation mental illness can cause. This is sadly common in Australian workplaces. We have a solid commitment to mental health for all of our 250+ staff, our guests, and the wider community – we encourage other businesses to also consider what they can do to ensure healthy staff and healthy communities.”

The benefits of exercise pre, during and post pregnancy While most women shy away from exercise during pregnancy, there are significant benefits to be found by implementing a specific exercise program, which takes into account stage of pregnancy and your past exercise levels. Numerous research studies have led to evidence-based guidelines for each trimester of pregnancy, as well as outlined multiple benefits associated with fertility and post-partum. Pre-pregnancy exercise improves fertility and reduces risk of gestational diabetes, while also preparing the body for pregnancy. During pregnancy, exercise has many benefits including reduced risk of birth complications, muscle tone and endurance, improved sleep quality, reduction of backaches, increased energy and maintenance of a
healthy weight range. Post-pregnancy exercise reduces and/or manages postnatal depression, improves strength and posture for lifting, carrying/breastfeeding your baby and helps you recover post birth. One of the most comforting facts for women is that by exercising throughout pregnancy, you decrease the risk of your baby being obese or developing type 2 diabetes later in life. There are currently no known adverse risks associated with meeting the recommended guidelines of at least 150 minutes per week of exercise during pregnancy. However, it is highly advised that exercises be specific to the individual, trimester and health/fitness level. Elise Robinson, accredited exercise physiologist with PACE Health Management, specialises in the delivery of specific exercise programs for fertility outcomes,

Providing professionalism, warmth, compassion and respect to help clients release unwanted habits, emotions, thoughts, behaviours and addictions, Effective Hypnotherapy is conducted in a safe and nurturing environment in Mornington. Eileen, a fully qualified hypnotherapist with a diploma in hypnotherapy and psychotherapy, is committed to helping people make lifestyle changes emotionally, mentally and physically, enabling clients to live a more empowered life. Eileen has also studied ego state therapy, sand play therapy for children and has a full qualification in the virtual gastric band, having been trained by London’s Sheila Granger, the founder of this revolutionary treatment. Becoming increasingly popular, Virtual gastric band via hypnosis is safe, without side effects, and cost effective compared with surgery and truly brings about permanent lifestyle and habit changes. Eileen calls it ‘the mind spa’ and again has had success in helping people not only lose weight, but break the dieting cycle. Effective Hypnotherapy also continues to help people to quit smoking. As an ex-smoker herself, Eileen gave up the habit over 12 years ago with hypnotherapy, so she fully understands the process involved. All sessions are individual, with the exception of ‘couples quit smoking sessions’, which she highly recommends. Sand play is also offered - a rapid method and gentle method that gets to the heart of the issue, bypassing the mind. For children and adults, it identifies unspoken issues and brings profound solutions. Eileen also has years of extensive experience in Lifeline counselling, specialising in crisis counselling and helping people through trauma, stress, grief and loss. A key metabolic enzyme linked to ageing skin has been identified by scientists in England. According to the published results, the enzyme – complex II - declines with age. Complex II was measured in sun-protected skin on models of all ages up to 72 years old, over a specific time. The study shows for the first time with increased ageing there is a significant reduction of this enzyme. The research means there is now a specific bimarker, or target, for developing and screening of anti-ageing creams and products that may counter this bio ageing. There is now a possibility with research, to tailor anti-ageing creams and treatments for all ageing skins. Stem Cell News Together with the scientific data and overseas treatments with stem cell injections for ageing skin, we are entering a new era of ‘anti-aging’. Dr Romero, from Anti-Aging & Associates, has been studying with leading overseas medical professionals and observing the long-term effects of stem cell treatments on fine lines, collagen and more. Later this year, Anti-Aging will introduce treatments, using your own stem cells, whereby they are treated and re-injected. But as Dr Romero says, “long-term studies are important with any product introduced into your body and a ‘cowboy’ approach of simply doing the procedure because you can, is not the way to go”. We have all heard about the outstanding work being done with stem cells in creating cartilage and now another breakthrough with skin is on its way to Mt Eliza. Raise your hands, I dare you - injectables for ageing hands and IPL for sun damage equals new hands. IPL utilises non-ablative filtered light to treat redness and brown marks. PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) can be used to increase the volume and improve hydration levels. These two combined treatments are also EXCELLENT for your chest area. Phone for an appointment with Dr Romero, James Barrett or Kay Nuttal for all your injectable treatments, using only original, approved dermal fillers, anti-wrinkle injections and much more. They have been providing their patients with safe honest treatments for over 10 years. By Sue Verheyen ADVANCED SKIN & LASER CLINIC A: 5 Old Mornington Rd, Mt Eliza T: 9787 7475

PRP is a revolutionary new injectable treatment, designed to rejuvenate and regenerate skin conditions at a dermal level. PRP uses your own blood plasma, which has a high concentration of platelets. This means it is entirely compatible and avoids the need for artificial products to enter the skin. PRP can help regenerate and revitalise aged and scarred skin, reduce fine lines and improve skin texture. It uses the body’s own healing pathway to create collagen. Ulthera - non-surgical face lift Ulthera uses ultrasound energy to stimulates the body’s own natural healing process to lift the chin, neck, and face, to smooth lines and wrinkles on the décolletage, achieving incredible results and a youthful look over time. This procedure is targeted at tightening the deep fascia of the face and is capable of lifting the aging skin from the deep layers. It is great for
a neck lift, or sagging jowls and no surgery is needed. Hydrafacial - instant improvement to skin health Hydrafacial combines exfoliation and deep cleansing to the surface layer of the skin. The practitioner applies glycolic acid, exfoliates, then vacuums off the dead skin. Next, antioxidants and nutrients are applied to the fresh skin and a moisturizer is applied to seal in the benefits. This new technology improves skin health and creates an instantly noticeable improvement in skin tone and texture. It will leave your skin ‘glowing’ immediately. Injectables - creating natural enhancement Dr Sally Shaw has sourced the most natural injectables with less protein complexes to avoid unknown toxins entering the skin. Aries
Last month was certainly a month of excitement and the prospect of new beginnings. Now May sees you living with the consequences. It is time to look at the big picture while at the same time keeping your feet firmly on the ground. April saw you soar. May sees you land on the ground.
Taurus
May is a pleasurable month with the Sun and Venus, the planet of beauty, in your Zodiac Sign. You are able to put yourself first this month. It is time to celebrate anything that is close to your heart. Count your blessings and embrace the people and things of value.
Gemini
Your ruling planet Mercury is retrograde for most of this month meaning you need to take some time to think before you act. As a spontaneous Gemini you are more likely to act quickly and make decisions on the run, however May is better suited to careful planning and preparing for the future.
Cancer Groups and associations are highlighted for
Cancerians in May. Change is afoot as you assess how you expend your time and energy and how you invest your money. With the planet Mercury going retrograde, this is not a month to make major decisions. Rather, it is a good time for honest self-appraisal.
Leo
May is positive for Leos with your public life flourishing and your self-esteem soaring. The trick is to make the most of the goodies coming your way while ensuring that your income exceeds your spending. Your professional life is bountiful but you need to put decisions on the back-burner until the end of the month.
Virgo
May is an excellent month for Virgos to organise, categorise and research. If you are spiritually or religiously oriented then you may take some time to further your studies. It is time to perfect your craft while keeping your eye on the big picture. Now you can embrace new ideas and broaden your perspective.
Libra
Sagittarius May is a more serious month than usual for
sunny Sagittarians. The planets Mars and Saturn are travelling through your Zodiac Sign indicating that setbacks and delays can occur. As a result, you are required to reflect on your goals. It is time to make changes at work to move ahead with your life goals.
Capricorn
May can be a creative time for Capricorns as you work on creative projects and surround yourself with like-minded individuals. You may discover some talents, or receive recognition for talents, that are satisfying and fun. You are a little more lighthearted than usual although you remain focused on achieving your personal ambition.
It is time to tune into the ebb and flow of your life and the lives of those around you. April was a bumpy ride and now you assess the changes that are occurring in your life. Investments of time and energy are under scrutiny. You face some changes that may be either disconcerting or exciting.
Aquarius Family matters are at the forefront this month.
Money matters and your partner’s affairs are centre stage this month. Your personal finances are demanding some tough decisions and action. This could be in the form of tightening the budget or you could be driving a hard bargain for something right now. Think again before making any big purchases.
Pisces Pisceans need something positive to occupy
Scorpio
Friendships and group activities move aside as you focus on home and hearth. You may plan some changes around your home, a visitor may arrive or you could enjoy de-cluttering and refreshing your household. A little landscaping could provide some light relief if you are an agrarian Aquarian.
your thoughts this month. It is time for you to daydream, use your imagination and emphasise positive thoughts. The planets are aligned in such a way as to encourage you to seek uplifting connections and take part in creative activities.

We speak via mobile on Roydhouse’s way back from town about Pacific Reef North Queensland Cobia – the new ‘wagyu of the sea’. This beautiful fish is taking the Australian seafood market by ‘black kingfish’ storm. “Cobia is a real fighting fish and is fast growing and the fat is evenly distributed throughout the body. It has a clean taste which makes it perfect for sashimi or cooking, and because it is sustainably farmed, its price remains stable all year round. All these ingredients make it a very attractive alternative to Barramundi, Salmon, Ocean Trout or its main rival Yellow Tail King Fish. It has a great application, from functions to high end dining,” he says. Cobia hit the market around two years ago and thrives

add nitrogen to the soil. All crops, once turned in, will also be adding valuable organic matter to the soil.
Rotating crops through our beds is a sensible practice and will benefit the growth of each subsequent crop while looking after the soil, but if you can afford the space it is a good idea to reinvigorate the bed(s) that have been exhausted the most. To continue to grow in nutrient depleted beds will only lead to smaller, less healthy and less nutrient dense crops. There are a number of ways we can reintroduce nutrients into our beds. Firstly, we can add our composts, manures or organic fertilisers to the soil in layers or lightly turned in and reapply mulches. If space is limited then these beds can be replanted with the subsequent season’s crops. However, if there is already enough room for a cool season crop and you can afford to ‘rest’ a bed or two. Growing a green manure or cover crop will not only revitalise the soil but it will also give the entire soil ecosystem time to reenergise.
Other useful additions to your soil that you may want to look into include rock dusts, mychorrizal powders and liquids, beneficial bacteria products and, of course, the organic fertilisers with fish and seaweed as their bases. Although there is much benefit from a range of products, it is always preferable to be able to achieve our desired levels of soil nutrition while relying as little as possible on bringing in manufactured products.
Green manure and cover crops can be sourced from any of our wonderful Australian online seed companies. Be sure to select seeds that are specific to your growing zone and climate. For Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula you can use blends that include the common crops such as mustards, peas, oats, vetch, fenugreek and clovers. Most of the seed companies will have blends for specific purposes. For example, the mustards (and marigolds) have bio-fumigation properties that will help clean the soil, supressing certain pest and disease populations while the legumous crops will help

And what to do with the vegetable waste coming out of the garden? Well most things can go into the bulk compost. Some old plants may be getting a bit fungal (zucchini, pumpkin, tomatoes, etc) so perhaps these can be disposed of, unless you are confident in your hot composting methods. Once you have your composting practices nailed you will be completing the circle of life in your edible garden.

Get your windows ready for winter Apology
RT Edgar Flinders would like to apologise for publishing incorrect text in relation to Property of the Month - 14 Farnsworth Drive, Cape Schanck, April edition of Mornington Peninsula Magazine. For all enquiries please do not hesitate to contact their office on 5989 0599.
Uncovered windows are responsible for up to 40 per cent of heat loss from a home in winter and up to 50 per cent of unwanted heat gain in summer. A one degree fall in temperature in your home adds 10 per cent to your heating bill. Conversely, an increase in temperature in summer adds significantly to the energy required for cooling. The benefits of curtains are endless but one of the most important features is that their insulation gives greater control over the interior temperature of your home, keeping it warm in winter and reducing your energy bills. By choosing curtains from Dollar Curtains & Blinds, you can preserve up to 20 per cent of the total heat in your home. Dollar Curtains & Blinds has specialised in curtains for more than 49 years and has Melbourne’s largest range of curtain styles and fabrics, all custommade in Melbourne. Choose from Dollar Curtains & Blinds’ extensive selection of fabrics and styles, and match with the latest tracking, pelmets, swags and tails and decorator finishes. Whether you are looking for classic elegance, eclectic chic or a modern contemporary feel, curtains provide colour and impact to every room. Call 5975 3655 to book your FREE in-home measure and quote or visit the showroom in the Peninsula Home Centre, Shop C4 1128-1132 Nepean Hwy, Mornington. Custom built and unique to stand out from the crowd Local furniture retailer Luduco Living is renowned for its custombuilt sofas, dining and cabinet furniture. Much of it is designed in-house and consequently is exclusive to the business. Shopping at Luduco Living is a special experience as a large percentage of their furniture designs are not available anywhere else in Australia. Their Odyssey Wall Collection, as seen in their latest advertising, is a great example. As owner Jeremy Brook explains, “Odyssey began as a simple but functional wall range four years ago and has since evolved into something much more sophisticated”. Prospective customers can provide a brief on the sizing, functionality and finish they want to achieve and Luduco Living’s interior designer will design the cabinets accordingly. This is achieved using specialist computer programs, and in 3D, so
the customer can fully appreciate the finer details of the proposed designs. Luduco Living can also superimpose these designs onto a photograph of the customer’s wall or room space to provide a finished look. Not only have the designs become more sophisticated but so too has the technology! And this level of service, expertise and professionalism can be applied to all of their custom-built ranges, from simple sofas to more complex dining and wall furniture. Pop into Luduco Living to see the latest in custom-built furniture and take advantage of special offers in the month of May.
