Dear Visitor,

Welcome to St. Croix, a land of spectacular beauty, rich cultural diversity and intriguing history. The largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, with 84 square miles of rolling hillsides, pristine beaches and a tropical rainforest, St. Croix offers endless opportunities to pursue your heart’s desire and create a unique vacation experience.

Adventurers and nature lovers can spend time hiking, kayaking, horseback riding, sailing or golfing at one of our championship golf courses. Scuba diving enthusiasts can experience five different dives in one day. For a more relaxed approach, swim in the crystalline waters of Buck Island, the only naturally occurring underwater National Monument in the U.S.

History buffs can experience St. Croix’s vibrant history through its architecture, historic landmarks, food, music and traditions. Explore the Christiansted National Historic Site, Forts Christiansvaern and Frederik or tour the Botanical Garden of the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts. Early risers can catch a picturesque sunrise at Point Udall, the easternmost point in the United States.

Christiansted and Frederiksted, our main seaside towns, are a shopper’s nirvana with charming boutiques offering everything from handcrafted jewelry and apparel to colorful local art. Visitors enjoy a generous $1,600 duty-free shopping allowance.

Our chic hotels, resorts and cozy bed-and-breakfast inns will pamper you with warm hospitality, while our world-class restaurants tempt your taste buds with local and international menus. St. Croix’s wide array of the entertainment choices, including fairs, festivals, live concerts and gaming venues ensure that the fun never ends.

On behalf of the Department of Tourism, I hope you have an amazing vacation experience in St. Croix. Thank you for choosing the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Sincerely,

Tourism

The Virgin

Islands Of The United States OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR GOVERNMENT HOUSE

1105 King Street

Christiansted, St. Croix, U.S.V.I. 00820

Welcome to our beautiful Virgin Islands of the United States. Our islands are unique in what they each offer and our communities are filled with people who are proud of our storied history. While visiting, I encourage you to immerse yourself in our culture and to explore the unique offerings of all four Islands that make up our paradise.

St. Croix, the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, sits to the south of our small island chain and is renowned for its pastoral landscapes, Danish architecture and historical landmarks. With its offshore wrecks and unbelievably beautiful underwater reefs, St. Croix is also a popular destination for diving enthusiasts. Be sure to visit the historic towns of Frederiksted and Christiansted and indulge in St. Croix’s renowned art and delicious culinary scenes.

St. John is one of the smaller U.S. Virgin Islands and conservation center of the territory. It is best known for its pristine beaches and the attractions within the Virgin Islands National Park, which occupies more than half the island. The lands in the Virgin Islands National Park shelter migrant birds and the mangroves support corals and anemones. As with all the Virgin islands, you will find that St. John provides a rich mix of our culture and history.

St. Thomas is our business and shopping center and the seat of government. Charlotte Amalie is the capital town of the U.S. Virgin Islands and is one of the busiest ports of call for cruise ships in the Caribbean. St. Thomas is among the most popular destinations in the Caribbean for sailing and yachting enthusiasts.

Water Island is the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands and rests just off the coast of St. Thomas. It is mostly residential but offers fun attractions like Honeymoon Beach and quaint accommodations. The island can be reached by ferry from the Crown Bay Marina or by other vessels.

As the Lieutenant Governor and Governor, both Treganza Roach and I wish you a warm, fun-filled stay and please accept our invitation to return often to our paradise.

Albert Bryan, Jr. Governor

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will allow visitors to the USVI to enter the US with up to $1600.00 per person of duty-free purchases.

JOINT DECLARATION

This is a Customs Declaration that can be made by family members who live in the same household and return to the United States together. These travelers can combine their purchases to take advantage of a combined flat duty rate, no matter which family member owns a given item. The combined value of merchandise subject to a Flat Duty Rate for a family of four traveling together would be $4,000. Purchase totals must be rounded to the nearest dollar amount.

ALCOHOL

If you are at least 21 years old, you may also take up to five liters of alcohol duty-free as part of your $1,600 exemption, as long as at least four liters were purchased in the USVI, and at least one of them is a product of the USVI, like Cruzan Rum. Liquor boxes are free to check aboard your return flight.

Returning resident travelers may import tobacco products only in quantities not exceeding the amounts specified in the personal exemptions for which the traveler qualifies.

Local Art Local Art

riginally from Portland, OR, I moved to St. Croix from Taos, NM in 2021 to focus on my art. While in Taos, I was part of the artist community there, learned from renowned artists, including Ed Sandoval and Zoe Zimmerman, and immersed in a multitude of mediums.

I began painting, as my own PTSD therapy, in 2008, after my, and my husband’s, military service, which included a tour in Iraq and his death in 2007 while serving there. During my decade in Taos, I founded the non-profit, Not Forgotten Outreach, Inc. in 2013, for Veterans and Military Families, in memory of my husband, and created the Taos Creative Arts Festival.

My early inspiration was Frieda Kahlo. I was inspired to discover that she created her paintings from bed due to her physical limitations. Because of my own, we have that in common.

I am mostly self-taught with the help of YouTube videos, an Art teacher in Reno, NV at the VA Health Care System, and my artistic life in Taos. I’ve studied artist’s techniques, done lots of reading, and just keep practicing. I like to encourage other people to paint as it’s taught me about who I am, what I’m drawn to, what inspires me, and that it's the journey that nourishes the mind, body and soul.

The art teacher in Reno created a turning point for me by encouraging me to embrace my shaky hands and make it part of my art. I became more experimental, challenged myself to paint out of my comfort zone, and started painting my feelings. I became aware that I wasn’t always painting the sadness, but colorful flowers and sunsets. The grief did not become all consuming; life is colorful and life affirming.

My April cover image was painted when I first got to St. Croix. I was sitting at the Frederiksted waterfront watching the sunset and how peaceful this single sailboat seemed. My art can be seen April 2-26 at the VI Contemporary Exhibit at Cane Roots Art Gallery in Christiansted.

Art is a visual reflection of my soul, a creation based upon the senses. Nature is my inspiration, colors from vibrant to muted demonstrate the complexity of our lives and the world. ”

MAY 24 I

Ziva Sanchez Adrienne Smith

don’t remember having thoughts on what I wanted to be when I grew up, but recently my Mom reminded me of one. ’Picture the cutest girl, button nose with big ol’ eyes, maybe 11 or 12, looking me straight in the eye and saying “an artist, Mama, I will be an artist!’

My Mom's creativity influenced me. I was fascinated by her handwriting and sign-making skills for our town grocery. Her bold, perfect letters and numbers left a lasting impact. Despite my lifelong passion for creating, it took me years to embrace the title of "artist." Moving to St. Croix from Oregon in late 2021 provided the push I needed to fully embrace my artistic identity.

Unable to stick to one artistic pursuit, I dove into whatever interested me from photography, painting and drawing, to digital art, abstract art, realism, and illustration. My formal art education was limited to electives in school. Once I learned the cost of “art school,” I chose a different path. Nonetheless, I continued to teach myself and practice constantly believing that artistic skills are accessible to anyone with the desire to learn.

While realistic art is my comfort zone, branching out has led to the creation of When You Weren’t, on the May cover, and St. Croix Dreaming, here. Both are based on local views. When creating When You Weren’t, those words kept repeating in my head and hinted at how the island may have been when we weren’t here—wild and free.

The Green Peafowl, When You Weren’t, and St. Croix Dreaming are all Digital Paintings created with my iPad and iPencil! Digital Painting is a skill of its own, close to traditional drawing but without the mess and supplies.

I also create traditional art. Lately, I have been using colored pencil which is what Chicken Frenchie was created with. It was one of the images featured in my first Solo Exhibit, “Poultry Profiles: The Coop Collection,” hosted in Christiansted at UNIQUE by Maria Banwaree Art Studio & Boutique in February. I am so thankful to Maria for taking me under her wing, to encourage and support me as an artist. ” Social media, shop art prints, and coloring books— http://adriennesmith.art

Our Danish Connection

The Scandinavian country of Denmark was among the European contenders for ownership of Caribbean islands and acquired St. Thomas in 1660, St. John in 1718, and St. Croix, purchased from France in 1733. (See page 48 for historical details.)

Denmark left its mark here in many ways that have contributed to a close relationship between Danes and the U.S. Virgin Islands following the 1917 Transfer, bringing thousands of Danish visitors. Examples of this closeness are:

• The handsome, still functioning 18th and 19th century architecture – official, commercial and private, built of Danish brick brought as ship ballast.

• Ruins of many plantation structures that once produced sugar and rum, particularly former windmills that ground sugar cane.

• The presence of four churches of the Danish Lutheran denomination, with special sections for Danish gravesites in two old cemeteries.

• Many African heritage and mixed blood families carrying Danish last names, even the use of historic Danish first names for Crucian children.

• A Friends of Denmark organization that enjoys exchange-visit festivals with its sister society in Denmark, the Danish West Indian Society.

• Access on the internet to over 5 million documents in the Danish archives relevant to the Danish West Indies, as our islands were called.

• A friendly Crucian population that welcomes and looks out for visiting Danes. If you happen to be a visiting Dane, we bid you Velkommen!

70 illustrated articles from the pages of this magazine, 2009-2019, documenting in English and Danish the legacy of Denmark’s imprint on our culture. Undercover Books and Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts, $20.

A PARK WITH A SECRET HISTORY IS FOUND IN CHRISTIANSTED

The history of the Danish West Indies, today’s U.S. Virgin Islands, is impressively well documented, both online and in documents stored in the Royal Danish Archives. But when you search for information about a man of prominence in our island history, we find that the name Peter Carl Limpricht yields very limited results. Yet, his name is in common use today, because on 46 King Street in Christiansted, right across from the handsome Pentheny building, lies a lovely little park bearing his name that during the year hosts events like the Vintage and Collectibles Fair sponsored by the Christiansted Community Association, and the spectacular Christmas lighting festivity sponsored by the Crucian Cultural Group.

Amidst the park’s numerous shade trees stands a handsome large gray granite column with Limpricht’s name and portrait, often not noticed by island visitors to the park. This man had been Danish West Indies Government secretary prior to becoming Governor General, succeeding Christian Cold in 1908. Very few government officials enjoy great popularity to the extent that Limpricht did, enough to have the town’s citizens commission the establishment of a park on a previously occupied but abandoned lot, honoring him with the impressive marble tribute stating its purpose in Danish and English.

A hospital for treatment of leprosy patients in Richmond was funded by the Odd Fellow charitable foundation. The military presence was replaced by a Gendarme corps that numbered 10 officers and 80 privates. Most in St. Croix were stationed at the Kingshill Barracks. Also, a corps of local orderlies was established.

As was so often the case here, serious disease forced him to resign from his office in 1911 and took him and his wife Astrid back to Denmark where he died the following year. Christian Helweg-Larsen succeeded him as Governor.

His marriage to a divorcee Danish wife had caused some consternation, but she had endeared herself to the Crucians. In fact, after her husband’s death she decided to return to St. Croix where she spent the rest of her life which ended in 1936. Her tombstone can be found in the old Danish cemetery that you can enter from the bottom of Company Street.

Witnesses to his modus operandi stated that Limpricht was very accessible, casually dressed in shirtsleeves, and carrying out his duties in a progressive manner. This was an era when Denmark was trying to initiate new industries like a sisal rope production and cotton cultivation on her impoverished islands. An agricultural experimental station at Anna’s Hope worked on combating insect infestations. A water reservoir was built at Jolly Hill for irrigation of nearby crops.

The memory of Peter Carl Limpricht is kept alive in his park in the handsome collection of tropical trees. The prominent Shower of Gold tree by the entrance, and a Flamboyant tree to the right, and what the late horticulturist David Hamada called Mouse Poison Tree to the left. All have survived multiple hurricanes, for which we can be thankful. Much as we would like to have the park open to all on a full-time basis, it is important for everybody’s safety to limit the hours, which are posted at the entrance.

Nina York, born in Denmark but a St. Croix resident since 1976, has been a contributor to this publication since 2009 and was its editor from 1990 -2003. She offers guidance to visitors from Denmark and the mainland, does translations, and sells her books, historic maps and print reproductions. ninayork@gmail.com

BUCK ISLAND CHARTERS WITH CAPTAIN CARL OR CAPTAIN HEINZ

Buck Island Charters, with Captain Heinz and his son Carl, is one of the oldest charter boat companies sailing to Buck Island Reef National Monument. Captain Heinz, born in Austria, a beautiful country of mountains and lakes but no ocean, decided to see more of the world and learned to sail while working in Bermuda racing sailboats during his free time.

In 1964 Heinz saw his dreamboat sail into Bermuda – a trimaran design that sailed three times faster than the mono-hulls he had been racing. He met the owner/ designer Arthur Piver and arranged to have one built in England, a 30-footer, and named her Teroro (Polynesian for Sun God). In 1966, he and his good friend Peter sailed her from England to Barbados in 21 days although, at that time, trimarans and catamarans were considered experimental boats and not widely accepted by the sailing world as safe ocean crossing vessels because of how much faster they went than monohulls.

Navigation was accomplished via dead reckoning (no

GPS or other technology like we have today). During their crossing, Heinz observed so much floating trash that it caused him to be concerned environmentally and has always relied on wind power to sail his boats since then. He was already thinking green in those days!

After sailing from island to island, he found the beautiful port of Christiansted in 1968 and raised his three children—Sarah, Melanie, and Carl – with his wife Mary. In 1985 Teroro was replaced by 42’ Teroro II, the first commercially built boat by Gold Coast Yachts at Salt River.

Carl followed his father’s passion after sailing and competing in his youth and after helping to captain Teroro II to Buck Island for 16 years and now has his own boat, Dragonfly, a 38’ trimaran. Carl loves nature, sailing, windsurfing, surfing, and kite boarding and is ready for any water sport when weather conditions permit.

He and his father love to share their local knowledge with the guests aboard Teroro II and Dragonfly and give them a very personalized snorkeling tour of Buck Island Reef. The boats are located at Green Cay Marina.

Buck Island Charters, with Captain Heinz and his son Carl, is one of the oldest charter boat companies sailing to Buck Island Reef National Monument. Teroro II, a 42’ trimaran, is the first commercially built boat by Gold Coast Yachts at Salt River and chartered by Captain Heinz. Carl followed his father’s passion, after sailing and competing in his youth and after helping to captain Teroro II to Buck Island for 16 years, and now has is own boat Dragonfly, a 38’ trimaran. He and his father love to share their local knowledge with the guests aboard and give them a very personalized snorkeling tour of Buck Island Reef. Golden Hook Fishing Club (GHFC) was incorporated as a non-profit corporation in 1999 by 12 resident billfish anglers. Their goal being to promote and encourage the sport of saltwater fishing in the VI through the establishment and promotion of an annual series of fishing tournaments called the Golden Hook Series and instill, within the membership, an awareness of conservation and its impact on all marine life and our communities, ensuring the continuation of sport fishing for many years and generations to come!

The Golden Hook Series Tournament consists of four competitions where teams vie against the seas, weather, and each other to top out for the biggest fish, best boat, and most points for the series. These events have been held 20+ years and typically consist of one-to-two-day events with an average of 10 to 15 boats participating. Annual Series Tournaments include (2) Spring Events - Dolphin Tournament and Golden Hook Challenge (Billfish) as well as (2) Fall Events – Golden Hook Guy/ Gal “Reel” Challenge and Wahoo Finale. Anglers of the tournaments are vying for a chance to win major cash prizes and the recognition of a lifetime!

In the summer, GHFC also holds an Annual Kids Handline Fishing Tournament, and volunteers teach children the sport of fishing off the wharf in Christiansted. In 2023, GHFC organized and presented the Fish-WithA-Vet Tournament, gifting approximately 35 active and retired veterans a day of fishing in these beautiful Caribbean waters.

The 2024 Golden Hook Series has officially come back starting with the Dolphin & Golden Hook Challenge on April 13-14. Anglers are encouraged to gather their teams and register for the tournaments. You can become a part of this by becoming a member and committing some of your time to the club, helping us ensure that game fishing will continue in our islands as an environmentally safe and entertaining sport.

ST. CROIX YACHT CLUB’S 31ST ANNUAL REGATTA

APRIL 19 -21

Who participates and from where?

We expect around 18 entries from St Croix, St John, St Thomas, BVI, Puerto Rico, and three returning all-women Rhodes 19 teams from Hyannis and Beverly Yacht Clubs (MA).

What sailor has been in the race every year?

The Stanton brothers! Older brother Chris and twins Peter and Scott have raced every regatta, and won many of them, as well as regattas on neighboring islands. That would be Peter with his dog in the top photo and, yes, they won their class!

Who's on the Race Committee? What do they do?

Duties are divided between land and water. Fleet Captain Stan Joines runs the shore entertainment and food, with help from Rear Commodore Nancy Hasson— live music, dancing, food trucks, Rubber Duck Race, Mocko Jumbies— all open to the public. On the water, Mike McCarty and I organize the Race and the Committee. Karen McCoy, with the help of Attorney Scot McChain, will run the Optimist race course from the beach in a smaller signal boat.

What are the categories and what are the prizes?

There are spinnaker and non-spinnaker boats, multihulls, beach cats, Rhodes 19, and a growing class of IC24s. 1st place in combined spinnaker/non-spinnaker class receives the winning Skippers Weight in Cruzan Rum and the Captain Nick Castruccio perpetual trophy. Winner of multihull class receives the Richard Newick perpetual trophy and winner of Rhodes 19 receives the Jerome Urban Perpetual Trophy. Winner of the advanced class in Optimist receives the skippers weight in sports drink. Other winners in advanced and green Optimists also receive prizes with ribbons for those completing their first regatta.

How has it changed over the years?

Sponsors have changed over the years. Mumms champagne was the original sponsor, followed by the Innovative Companies, and now sponsored by the VI Department of Tourism.

DRIVE LEFT

Whether renting a car or crossing the street, it is vital to remember that traffic in the USVI flows from the left side of the road!

St. Croix has two towns, Christiansted at the center on the Northshore and Frederiksted at the West End, connected by the Melvin H. Evans highway. The Caribbean Sea, surrounding the island, is always there guiding you along roads that wind the coast.

Car rental agencies offer Jeeps, SUVs, vans, sedans, and trucks. They come with a full tank of gas and should be returned full! The driver and front seat passenger are required by law to use seat belts.

There are two parking lots in Christiansted, both with fees. One is the NPS lot next to the Fort, open from 8am-5pm, M-F. The other, on the corner of Strand and King Cross Streets, has extended hours. Check our Maps for more details, Pages 54-58.

CHRISTIANSTED

Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of Christiansted at the site of the Old Scale House on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service. The Welcome Center and Park Store is newly reopened here from 10am to 4pm, 7 days a week (closed from Noon-1pm for lunch). Site brochures are available along with books, maps and souvenirs.

Nearby, The Old Customs House with its sweeping staircase, on the grassy area next to the Fort, was completed in 1830. It now holds National Park Service offices.

Fort Christiansvaern was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appearance reflects the 1830’s period. It is open Monday through Friday from 8:30am – 4:30pm. The adjacent Fort Parking Lot is open from 8am – 5pm and hours are strictly enforced. There is a daily $10.00 parking lot usage fee collected by an automated cashless machine at the entrance, accepting only debit and credit cards.

The Steeple Building across Hospital Street, formerly the Lutheran Church, dates from 1753. This site, on the Walking Tour, is currently closed for renovation.

Across Company Street lies the onetime Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse, built in 1749 as a storage facility for hundreds of barrels of sugar and rum. In its courtyard, slave auctions were formerly held.

Originally, Government House on King Street, was built as a home for a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. Due to COVID-19 restrictions tours of the site have temporarily been suspended.

The Lord God of Sabaoth Lutheran Church across Queen Cross Street on King Street was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added.

Across on Company Street is the historic Lutheran Parish Hall, and in the courtyard the former Pastor’s residence.

Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall on the left corner. Opened in 1828 by Danish pharmacist Peder Eggers Bentzon, the town’s first pharmacy remained here until 1970.

Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market , laid out in the original town plan from 1735 and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.

Christiansted National Historic Site

Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park Saystem in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.” Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors.

Your tour of Frederiksted begins at Fort Frederik by the cruise ship pier and waterfront park. Construction on the Fort began in 1752 and was completed in 1760. Featuring a museum with several permanent exhibits, and an art gallery, it is open Monday – Friday, 8:30 am to 4 pm. Admission $5., children under 12 free.

A public beach with showers and bathrooms is next to Fort Frederik.

Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park named for the renowned slave rebellion leader, a bust of whom is displayed there.

The Oscar E. Henry Customs House was built in the 1800s. The Freedom Fountain , facing the pier, was installed for the Emancipation’s 150th Anniversary Celebration.

After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, parts of the town were rebuilt in Victorian style. Victoria House , on Strand Street, preserves the Frederiksted architecture of that time.

The Visitor’s Bureau is located upstairs on Strand Street above the Frederiksted Mall and next door to the historic light blue building housing the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts Free admission to exhibits and gift shop.

Frederiksted is home to several historic churches, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church , Holy Tr inity Lutheran Church , Friedensberg Moravian Church , and St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church .

The handsomely restored Arthur Abel Complex , formerly The Danish School (1799), is now the office of the Lieutenant Governor in Frederiksted at Hospital and Market Street. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library , built in 1803. Just behind it lies the Dorsch Theater , an open-air stage and event site. The Market Place , is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted.

WEST END ATTRACTIONS

Tour an early Danish homestead, the Lawaetz Family Museum at Estate Little La Grange on Mahogany Road. Plantation ruins offer visitors a tranquil backdrop for peace and contemplation at the Mt. Washington Labyrinth , 2 miles north of Frederiksted. Open every day, year-round. The entrance gate is to the left when you reach the property and parking lot. The Whim Museum , on Centerline Road, is the site of a former sugar cane plantation and temporarily closed. The Botanical Garden of the Virgin Islands also on Centerline, showcases on 16 acres of ruins of a former sugar plantation 1500 native & exotic species. Award-winning Ridge2Reef Farm , on Creque Dam Road, is a USDA Certified Organic Farm with produce, tours, and workshops. The Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge is .5 mile beyond the west end of the Melvin H. Evans highway. See St. Croix Map, Pg 54 for location.

In 2024, VIAC Phase One Comes to Life with Rehabilitation, Pilot Programs, and More

In the sixth year since its incorporation, the Virgin Islands Architecture Center for Built Heritage and Crafts stands at the intersection of education and workforce development, historic preservation, cultural heritage placekeeping and community economic development. Known by the acronym VIAC or VIACSTX, the center is working to meet its strategic development goals in 2024 through several initiatives: three full time staff members, the rehabilitation of the Old Barracks Property on 21, 22, and 23 Hospital Street, Christiansted, the creation of internships and pilot programs that will precede curriculum offerings, a public awareness campaign to engage the general public on its mission, and the development of the narrative of place, where the authentic stories of the people of St. Croix, especially those with a connection to the Old Barracks, Hospital Street, Gallows Bay, and the town of Christiansted can be told.

Amanda Sackey joined Team VIAC this year as its Operations and Finance Manager. She will oversee VIAC’s initiatives and be responsible for their implementation under the direction of its volunteer Board of Directors and Advisory Council. She will be joined by LaToya Willis who is tasked with building out the administrative structure of the nonprofit 501(c)3 organization and assisting with implementation of initiatives. Monique Clendinen Watson, who has worked with the organization as a Grant Writer and Public Relations Specialist since 2019, continues in that role. Funding for these initiatives were provided through a grant from the Department of Interior Office of Insular Affairs Technical Assistance Program (TAP).

This year, VIAC will begin the rehabilitation of the 265-year-old property with shell construction of Building 2, known as the former Department of Labor Building. With a Save America’s Treasures grant from the National Park Service (NPS) in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS), VIAC will undertake the structural stabilization, clearing of debris and vegetation, repairing the interior windows and doors, repairing utilities and architectural and engineering services. This grant requires a one-to-one match, which VIAC is seeking from community and other partners. VIAC has applied for funding to begin work on Building 1, (formerly the Christiansted Police Station) and is hopeful that work will begin on this building as well.

This summer, VIAC hopes to launch internships with college-age students on all three

VIRGIN ISLANDS ARCHITECTURE CENTER FOR BUILT HERITAGE AND CRAFTS

islands and summer programs for high school students that provide experiences in historic preservation, the building arts and crafts, architecture and cultural heritage preservation. These programs are being developed with local, regional and national strategic partners.

VIAC’s public awareness campaign this year began with its participation in Agrifest 2024 with a booth manned by Amanda Sackey and LaToya Willis who were joined by Board and Advisory Council members. They engaged the community in dialogue about the importance of the territory’s built heritage, Old Barracks stories and the VIAC mission. VIAC also maintains a website and a Facebook page, where the public can learn more about the VIAC mission and how to support the educational center as it grows. VIAC plans to engage the community in various ways as its plans develop.

In addition to providing workforce development programs in architecture and building arts and crafts, VIAC adheres to the precept that authentic storytelling is the first step in historic preservation. Last year, through a grant from the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands and the National Endowment for the Humanities, VIAC launched its Old Barracks Storytelling Initiative where the four major eras of the 265-year-old building complex, (Danish Colonial, Early American, Christiansted High School and VI Departmental headquarters) were researched and curated for future presentations. In addition to creating educational presentations about the Old Barracks Story for use in Virgin Islands classrooms and engaging students in interactive storytelling with elders, VIAC hopes to launch a documentary about the Old Barracks later this year. The community can view the documentary trailers and learn more about the Storytelling Project and other initiatives by visiting https://viacstx.com/educational-resources/

“In 2024, all that we have planned for begins to take shape and we are excited that this project that has developed out of community driven initiatives is taking shape,” said VIAC Board Chair Mary Dema. www.viacstx.com
