ST. CROIX A VIBE LIKE NO OTHER
While St. Croix is the must-see island for the history buff, we are not only about the days of old. We are also known for our gorgeous beaches, world-class activities, natural resources, fine dining and golf courses. Our arts, crafts, music, and cultural events will lead you to discover exactly why St. Croix is a vibe like no other.
Dear Visitor,
Welcome to St. Croix, a land of spectacular beauty, rich cultural diversity and intriguing history. The largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, with 84 square miles of rolling hillsides, pristine beaches and a tropical rainforest, St. Croix offers endless opportunities to pursue your heart’s desire and create a unique vacation experience.
Adventurers and nature lovers can spend time hiking, kayaking, horseback riding, sailing or golfing at one of our championship golf courses. Scuba diving enthusiasts can experience five different dives in one day. For a more relaxed approach, swim in the crystalline waters of Buck Island, the only naturally occurring underwater National Monument in the U.S.
History buffs can experience St. Croix’s vibrant history through its architecture, historic landmarks, food, music and traditions. Explore the Christiansted National Historic Site, Forts Christiansvaern and Frederik or tour the Botanical Garden of the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts. Early risers can catch a picturesque sunrise at Point Udall, the easternmost point in the United States.
Christiansted and Frederiksted, our main seaside towns, are a shopper’s nirvana with charming boutiques offering everything from handcrafted jewelry and apparel to colorful local art. Visitors enjoy a generous $1,600 duty-free shopping allowance.
Our chic hotels, resorts and cozy bed-and-breakfast inns will pamper you with warm hospitality, while our world-class restaurants tempt your taste buds with local and international menus. St. Croix’s wide array of the entertainment choices, including fairs, festivals, live concerts and gaming venues ensure that the fun never ends.
On behalf of the Department of Tourism, I hope you have an amazing vacation experience in St. Croix. Thank you for choosing the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Sincerely,
Boschulte

Welcome to our beautiful Virgin Islands of the United States. Our islands are unique in what they each offer and our communities are filled with people who are proud of our storied history. While visiting, I encourage you to immerse yourself in our culture and to explore the unique offerings of all four Islands that make up our paradise.
St. Croix, the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, sits to the south of our small island chain and is renowned for its pastoral landscapes, Danish architecture and historical landmarks. With its offshore wrecks and unbelievably beautiful underwater reefs, St. Croix is also a popular destination for diving enthusiasts. Be sure to visit the historic towns of Frederiksted and Christiansted and indulge in St. Croix’s renowned art and delicious culinary scenes.
St. John is one of the smaller U.S. Virgin Islands and conservation center of the territory. It is best known for its pristine beaches and the attractions within the Virgin Islands National Park, which occupies more than half the island. The lands in the Virgin Islands National Park shelter migrant birds and the mangroves support corals and anemones. As with all the Virgin islands, you will find that St. John provides a rich mix of our culture and history.
St. Thomas is our business and shopping center and the seat of government. Charlotte Amalie is the capital town of the U.S. Virgin Islands and is one of the busiest ports of call for cruise ships in the Caribbean. St. Thomas is among the most popular destinations in the Caribbean for sailing and yachting enthusiasts.
Water Island is the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands and rests just off the coast of St. Thomas. It is mostly residential but offers fun attractions like Honeymoon Beach and quaint accommodations. The island can be reached by ferry from the Crown Bay Marina or by other vessels.
As the Lieutenant Governor and Governor, both Treganza Roach and I wish you a warm, fun-filled stay and please accept our invitation to return often to our paradise.
Albert Bryan, Jr. Governor

Born in 1990 in La Habana, Cuba, Lisbet Corvo Alderete has been involved in the arts since early childhood. She began her artistic education at the Taller de Manero, an educational group that prepares young artists to enter Academia de Bellas Artes San Alejandro, where she attended in 2006 and graduated with honors in 2011.
JULY 24
Lisbet Corvo Alderete Jeff Condit
I’ve been working in photography for over 50 years. I was an art major in college and studied at the Portland Art Museum (Museum Art School) and Portland State University. In time, I joined my father in his commercial photography business and acquired the skillset needed to become a professional photographer. Through this, I obtained various skills like camera operation, lighting techniques, as well as film processing and printing in both color and black & white.
The Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes San Alejandro is the oldest and most prestigious fine arts school in Cuba, founded in 1818. After graduating, Lisbet received graduate training on classical screen printing techniques (silkscreen) at the Instituto Superior de Arte ISA and from 2012, she participated in many group exhibitions showcasing her silkscreens and drawings.
Cuba has a rich history of traditional printmaking, with multiple print shops and artists working across the country.
In 2014, she joined the world renown Cuban studio Taller de Serigrafia Rene Portocarrero where you can find her regularly printing traditional silkscreen graphics using Asian and Cuban twists.
Lisbet Corvo Alderete’s imagery speaks clearly with humor and resolve. Like many of her contemporaries, she utilizes sarcasm, seductive postures, suggestive yet innocent titles and mysterious nods to Asian culture from earlier eras, all amounting to a common irony that exists in many Cuban artist’s imagery, because their lives are embroiled in a duplicity of ironic shelves, angles and realities.
This Cuban silkscreen artist is from the LGBTQ+ community with images included in the United in Pride Exhibition at the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts in Frederiksted opening Saturday, June 1 and running through June 29.
Her June ST. CROIX THIS WEEK cover image is titled Inside your kiss that I inhale... like a divine joy. You can actually meet Lisbet, and other Cuban artists, on the annual Caribbean Museum Center’s educational and cultural tour to Cuba.
When my father started his business in Portland in the 1950s, he used the Victorian house we lived in as his studio. He would rent the upstairs to commercial artists and I would come up to visit them. I was about 3 or 4 years old. Eventually, we moved but my parents continued to rent the space to artists who would sometimes exchange art for rent. These pieces filled my home growing up. This environment had a profound effect on me and was the beginning of my artistic journey.
During the past 25 years, I have transitioned out of commercial photography to focus on more personal work. Over the years, I have been greatly influenced by 20th century abstractionism and artists such as de Kooning, Rauschenberg, and David Hockney. These artists have created an appetite within me for more experimentation, inspiring me to change my approach away from solely the photo and more towards the canvas.
My work continues to use photography as the starting point. I then print the image on film rather than paper and bond it to the canvas through the use of acrylic medium. Once the composition is complete, I then apply multiple layers of acrylic to give the image more of an encaustic feel. The final look is softer and more painterly. I have found in my practice that it can be exhilarating to create something new but with the excitement also comes the pain; it’s all emotional and a part of the process.
A detail of the Jump Up 23 image above is on the July cover and the actual full image can be seen as part of the BRIDGES Exhibit running now at Cane Roots Art Gallery, Company Street, Christiansted through the summer.”

Our Danish Connection
The Scandinavian country of Denmark was among the European contenders for ownership of Caribbean islands and acquired St. Thomas in 1660, St. John in 1718, and St. Croix, purchased from France in 1733. (See page 48 for historical details.)
Denmark left its mark here in many ways that have contributed to a close relationship between Danes and the U.S. Virgin Islands following the 1917 Transfer, bringing thousands of Danish visitors. Examples of this closeness are:
• The handsome, still functioning 18th and 19th century architecture – official, commercial and private, built of Danish brick brought as ship ballast.
• Ruins of many plantation structures that once produced sugar and rum, particularly former windmills that ground sugar cane.
• The presence of four churches of the Danish Lutheran denomination, with special sections for Danish gravesites in two old cemeteries.
• Many African heritage and mixed blood families carrying Danish last names, even the use of historic Danish first names for Crucian children.
The large number of plantations with sugar mills, as we liken to call them,
• A Friends of Denmark organization that enjoys exchange-visit festivals with its sister society in Denmark, the Danish West Indian Society.
• Access on the internet to over 5 million documents in the Danish archives relevant to the Danish West Indies, as our islands were called.
• A friendly Crucian population that welcomes and looks out for visiting Danes. If you happen to be a visiting Dane, we bid you Velkommen!
70 illustrated articles from the pages of this magazine, 2009-2019, documenting in English and Danish the legacy of Denmark’s imprint on our culture. Undercover Books and Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts, $20.
D FROM EARLY DAYS, DANES SEE WIND POWER AS AN ENERGY
by Nina Yorkanes are often seen as innovators and, while the almost 150 sugar mills of former days in St Croix did utilize natural resources of our trade winds to drive the engines cutting sugar cane to extract the cane juice, this was not unique in the Caribbean. Still, since the 1750’s, when they were put into use, the limestone and coral solid-mill structures served far better than the cattle-driven animal mills.
The large number of plantations with sugar mills, as we like to call them, contributed to St. Croix’s prominence as one of the largest sugar and rum producers, despite the island’s small size of 84 square miles. The gift from nature remains in the still-standing numerous ruins around St. Croix resembling upside-down thimbles.
Could these icons of the past be a beckoning for us to reconsider the windmill concept with a new application— as an energy provider through the production and application of gigantic wind turbines that have already proven their efficiency over numerous years of service in many countries besides Denmark? Participants in a recent conference, involving our governor and interested representatives of the industry and government agencies, and Denmark’s
Ambassador in Washington DC, discussed a possible application of Danish wind power initiatives in the Virgin Islands.
Denmark has been a pioneer in wind power, in part because of an inherent windy climate, and wind-generating turbines dot the Danish landscape and coastlines. The large Danish company, Ørsted Global, recently signed a huge contract with California for wind power installations. Another big name in Danish wind power is Vestas, with installations world-wide for today’s needs.
The installation of solar energy panels is a happy and popular solution especially for private residences. But when it comes to large kilowatt needs, the wind turbines are able to provide a better solution. Most companies, like Ørsted, supply both wind and solar.
Alternative power, instead of the present fossil fuel supply, has so many advantages for the Virgin Islands, like bettering the island’s cost of living and attracting potential businesses to relocate here. The US Virgin Islands enjoys the benefit of Tradewinds almost all year round—resources available from Nature discovered by our ancestors!

Golden Hook Fishing Club (GHFC) was incorporated as a non-profit corporation in 1999 by 12 resident billfish anglers. Their goal being to promote and encourage the sport of saltwater fishing in the VI through the establishment and promotion of an annual series of fishing tournaments called the Golden Hook Series and instill, within the membership, an awareness of conservation and its impact on all marine life and our communities, ensuring the continuation of sport fishing for many years and generations to come!
The Golden Hook Series Tournament consists of four competitions where teams vie against the seas, weather, and each other to top out for the biggest fish, best boat, and most points for the series. These events have been held 20+ years and typically consist of one-to-two-day events with an average of 10 to 15 boats participating. Annual Series Tournaments include (2) Spring Events - Dolphin Tournament and Golden Hook Challenge (Billfish) as well as (2) Fall Events – Golden Hook Guy/ Gal “Reel” Challenge and Wahoo Finale. Anglers of the tournaments are vying for a chance to win major cash prizes and the recognition of a lifetime!
In the summer, GHFC also holds an Annual Kids Handline Fishing Tournament, and volunteers teach children the sport of fishing off the wharf in Christiansted. In 2023, GHFC organized and presented the Fish-WithA-Vet Tournament, gifting approximately 35 active and retired veterans a day of fishing in these beautiful Caribbean waters.
The 2024 Golden Hook Series has officially come back starting with the Dolphin & Golden Hook Challenge on April 13-14. Anglers are encouraged to gather their teams and register for the tournaments. You can become a part of this by becoming a member and committing some of your time to the club, helping us ensure that game fishing will continue in our islands as an environmentally safe and entertaining sport.

The St. Croix Sea Turtle Project at
Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge
Turtle Watch is underway for 2024!
Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1984 when 340 acres were purchased from the West Indies Investment Company. The land was acquired specifically to protect nesting habitat of endangered leatherback sea turtles. They actually provide crucial nesting habitat for endangered leatherback sea turtles and hawksbill sea turtles as well as for the threatened green sea turtle.
Each summer, Sandy Point Wildlife Refuge presents their free education program, Turtle Watch, for the residents of St. Croix to participate in the educational experience of guided sea turtle nesting and hatching observation. Hundreds of volunteers help with the turtle recovery program. Nesting occurs in April and May and Hatchling Watch takes place in June and July. Sandy Point nest numbers for 2023: 17 leatherback, 1,576 green and 239 hawksbill nests! A record year for greens and hawksbills.
Weekly updates to St. Croix nest counts are posted online or you can follow on Facebook and Instagram for regular postings. The St. Croix Turtle Project will have a booth at the July 7 Mango Melee at the Botanical Garden with their turtle t-shirts, homemade crafts, and sea turtle info to pick up.
The St. Croix Sea Turtle Project is sponsored by The Ocean Foundation, a 501(c) (3) organization, in cooperation with US Fish and Wildlife Service at Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge, St. Croix, US Virgin Islands.

St. Croix has two towns, Christiansted at the center on the Northshore and Frederiksted at the West End, connected by the Melvin H. Evans highway. The Caribbean Sea, surrounding the island, is always there guiding you along roads that wind the coast.
Car rental agencies offer Jeeps, SUVs, vans, sedans, and trucks. They come with a full tank of gas and should be returned full! The driver and front seat passenger are required by law to use seat belts.
There are two parking lots in Christiansted, both with fees. One is the NPS lot next to the Fort, open from 8am-5pm, M-F. The other, on the corner of Strand and King Cross Streets, has extended hours. Check our Maps for more details, Pages 54-58.

Christiansted Map Christiansted Map
Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of Christiansted at the site of the Old Scale House on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service. The Welcome Center and Park Store is newly reopened here from 10am to 4pm, 7 days a week (closed from Noon-1pm for lunch). Site brochures are available along with books, maps and souvenirs.
Nearby, The Old Customs House with its sweeping staircase, on the grassy area next to the Fort, was completed in 1830. It now holds National Park Service offices.
Fort Christiansvaern was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appearance reflects the 1830’s period. It is open Monday through Friday from 8:30am – 4:30pm. The adjacent Fort Parking Lot is open from 8am – 5pm and hours are strictly enforced. Coming soon is a daily $10.00 parking lot usage fee collected by an automated cashless machine at the entrance, accepting only debit and credit cards.
The Steeple Building across Hospital Street, formerly the Lutheran Church, dates from 1753. This site, on the Walking Tour, is currently closed for renovation.
Across Company Street lies the onetime Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse, built in 1749 as a storage facility for hundreds of barrels of sugar and rum. In its courtyard, slave auctions were formerly held.
Originally, Government House on King Street, was built as a home for a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. Due to COVID-19 restrictions tours of the site have temporarily been suspended.
The Lord God of Sabaoth Lutheran Church across Queen Cross Street on King Street was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added.
Across on Company Street is the historic Lutheran Parish Hall, and in the courtyard the former Pastor’s residence.
Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall on the left corner. Opened in 1828 by Danish pharmacist Peder Eggers Bentzon, the town’s first pharmacy remained here until 1970.
Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market , laid out in the original town plan from 1735 and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.
Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park Saystem in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.” Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors.

Your tour of Frederiksted begins at Fort Frederik by the cruise ship pier and waterfront park. Construction on the Fort began in 1752 and was completed in 1760. Featuring a museum with several permanent exhibits, and an art gallery, it is open Monday – Friday, 8:30 am to 4 pm. Admission $5., children under 12 free.
A public beach with showers and bathrooms is next to Fort Frederik.
Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park named for the renowned slave rebellion leader, a bust of whom is displayed there.
The Oscar E. Henry Customs House was built in the 1800s. The Freedom Fountain , facing the pier, was installed for the Emancipation’s 150th Anniversary Celebration.
After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, parts of the town were rebuilt in Victorian style. Victoria House , on Strand Street, preserves the Frederiksted architecture of that time.
The Visitor’s Bureau is located upstairs on Strand Street above the Frederiksted Mall and next door to the historic light blue building housing the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts Free admission to exhibits and gift shop.
Frederiksted is home to several historic churches, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church , Holy Tr inity Lutheran Church , Friedensberg Moravian Church , and St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church .
The handsomely restored Arthur Abel Complex , formerly The Danish School (1799), is now the office of the Lieutenant Governor in Frederiksted at Hospital and Market Street. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library , built in 1803. Just behind it lies the Dorsch Theater , an open-air stage and event site. The Market Place , is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted.

The U.S. Virgin Islands –A Multicultural Tapestry Shaped by Deep Connections and Historical Ties
By Carol M. Burke, Chairwoman, 175th Emancipation Commemoration CommitteeThe U.S. Virgin Islands and Ghana –Cultural Connections that Run Deep
Within the Caribbean, the U.S. Virgin Islands is often seen as a “melting pot” of cultures and nationalities. That should come as no surprise, since at least a half-dozen world powers – including the British, the French, the Spanish and the Danish – have claimed “ownership” rights over the strategically situated archipelago. Moreover, people from virtually every country or territory in the Caribbean have migrated to the islands, bringing with them a colorful and vibrant blend of cuisines, music, languages and history. The result is a shining, beautiful tapestry of multicultural splendor that delights visitors and makes life in the Territory richer, fuller and more dynamic.
Adding even greater depth and significance to this interwoven cultural fabric is the underlying (and sometimes overlooked) centuries-old connection between the Virgin Islands and certain West African countries, most notably Ghana. The intimate relationship between Ghana and the U.S. Virgin Islands is rooted in history, culture, and shared experiences. Despite the geographical distance, the two regions have significant ties that bind them together in deeply personal and profound ways.
A Dark Past, Reconciliation, and Healing
The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade played a pivotal role in shaping the destinies of both Ghana and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Many enslaved Africans were forcibly taken from West Africa, including Ghana, and transported to various parts of the Americas, including the Virgin Islands. The Christianborg Castle in Ghana served as a departure point for some of these slaves, who eventually found themselves in the Danish West Indies (now the U.S. Virgin Islands). Ghana is believed to be the predominant embarkation region both for documented and estimated slave voyages to the Virgin Islands.
Denmark colonized St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix in the 17th and 18th centuries. Enslaved Africans toiled on plantations producing commodities like sugar, which Denmark profited from until the mid-19th century when sugar prices fell. On March 31, 1917, Denmark formally transferred governance over the islands to the United States for a sum of $25 million in gold coin. This historic transaction marked the only time the U.S. ever purchased a permanently inhabited territory from another imperial power.
Relationships between the Territory and Denmark have evolved over the past 100-plus years, with various exchange and cultural learning initiatives being developed to ensure that historical realities are recognized and lessons of the past do not become forgotten. Organizations such as the Danish West Indian Society and Friends of Denmark Societies of St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John are committed to strengthening existing relationships and exploring new opportunities for collaboration.
Similarly, efforts to trace and understand the intricate connections between Ghana and the Virgin Islands have resulted in opportunities for reconciliation and collaboration between the two destinations. In 2006 a special ceremony took place in Ghana. A delegation from the U.S. Virgin Islands participated in the ritual, which aimed to heal the emotional wounds caused by the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. During the ceremony, participants were given local names, symbolizing their acceptance back into their ancestral homeland. They also jumped over a bowl of water containing leaves, signifying a return to their African roots.
In 2019, the Year of Return was commemorated, along with the International Decade of People of African Descent and V.I. Emancipation and Freedom Week. Performances by dance groups, such as the Ulla F. Muller Elementary School Bamboula Dancers and Earth Mamas Pan African Dance Company, highlighted the resilience and strength of their
U.S. Virgin Islands Governor Albert Bryan Jr and members of the USVI 175th Emancipation Commemoration
shared history. Through activities such as these, both Virgin Islanders and Ghanaians are reminded of the unbreakable bonds that transcend both miles and time.
Cultural Celebrations and Exchange Programs
Today, both regions celebrate their shared cultural heritage through various events. As both Ghana and the U.S. Virgin Islands continue to honor their heritage and shared past, there is a growing emphasis on forgiveness, unity, and development. The spiritual return of millions of Africans living in the Diaspora remains a central theme. By embracing their common history and forging stronger bonds, the people of the U.S. Virgin Islands can contribute to and benefit from a brighter future for all persons of African descent and with ties to the African continent.
Groups such as the U.S. Virgin Islands 175th Emancipation Commemoration Committee, established by Executive Order of the Governor of the Virgin Islands, cultural and educational groups are continuously engaged in outreach and exchange with their Ghanaian counterparts, officials, and representatives to keep the lines of communication and sharing open and active. U.S. Virgin Islanders have traveled to Ghana to participate in Emancipation Day events, which commemorate the final abolition of slavery in the region, with many reporting that the experience has been life-changing for them and their families.
Looking Forward
While the 1917 transfer signified renewed hope and progress for Virgin Islanders, work remains to be done to address concerns about the Territory’s current political status, including the lack of civil rights protections. The USVI Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights has stated: “It is contrary to the notion of democracy itself and serves to create second-tier citizenship in the United States colonies. At its core, this disenfranchisement renders those U.S. citizens living in the U.S.V.I. (and the other Territories) holding U.S. passports voiceless in a country that espouses the right to vote as fundamental and the basis for all authority given by the People to their government.”
Ensuring that the significance of the 1848 signing of the Emancipation Proclamation in the U.S. Virgin Islands remains firmly entrenched in the consciousness of Virgin Islanders living in the Territory as well as in the Diaspora, and creating more opportunities for meaningful connections between the USVI and Ghana remains a focal point of concern for the 175th Emancipation Commemoration Committee. The Committee will continue to offer relevant programs that Educate, Engage, and Inspire U.S. Virgin Islanders to renew and strengthen bonds with Ghana, Denmark, and other groups with a shared history.
The connections between Ghana and the U.S. Virgin Islands run deep, transcending time and distance. From reconciliation ceremonies to cultural celebrations, these ties remind us of our shared humanity and the importance of preserving our heritage.

JUNE 2024 / JULY 2024
Our clear skies are perfect for star gazing!
By:Tom Lesser, formerly Senior Lecturer at the American Museum-Hayden Planetarium and frequent island visitor.
In the Northern Hemisphere Summer begins on June 20th at 4:51 p.m. in the Virgin Islands. At that moment in time the Sun will be as far north in the sky as it will be all year.
It may surprise you to learn that on July 5th the Earth is farthest from the sun, some 94,510,538 miles (152,099,968 km) away. In January the Earth is closest to the Sun, about 91,404,095 miles (147,100,632 kilometers) distant. Obviously, the distance to the Sun does not cause Summer and Winter. Besides, when it is Summer in the Northern Hemisphere it is Winter in the Southern Hemisphere. In Summer in the Northern Hemisphere the Earth’s North Pole is tilted toward the Sun (in Winter, it is tilted away from the Sun). That causes the Sun to be higher in the sky, sunlight to be more direct, thus more intense, causing warmer weather – Summer.
In the evening, once the sky grows dark, look low in the west for the bright star Regulus, the heart of Leo, the Lion. Fainter stars form a backwards question mark with Regulus at its point. Higher in the sky, almost overhead is another bright star, Arcturus, in the constellation Boötes, the Herdsman. Boötes is also known as the bear driver, since he seems to be driving
the Great Bear, Ursa Major, across the sky (low in the northwest). Just to the east of Arcturus and Boötes is a semi-circle of faint stars. This is the Northern Crown.
Look to the south for a bright red star. This is Antares and it marks the heart of Scorpius, the Scorpion. The stars that form the Scorpion look something like you think they should, and most people can easily see the Scorpion’s long curved tail formed by fainter stars. According to mythology, this is the Scorpion that stung Orion, the Hunter, and Orion died. Orion and the Scorpion were both placed in the heavens, but they are never seen in the sky at the same time.
In the eastern and northeastern sky, look for three bright stars, forming a large triangle. Since the triangle is visible all night long during the Summer up north, it is called the Summer Triangle. Each bright star marks a different star group or constellation.
Highest in the East is Vega, part of Lyra the Harp. In mythology this is the harp invented by Hermes, which Mercury gave to Orpheus, the musician who joined Jason and the Argonauts in search of the Golden Fleece.
To the South is Altair, in Aquila the Eagle.
The eagle was the bird of Zeus and is often represented carrying aloft the young boy Ganymede. Aquila was also known as the bird of Jove and the bearer of his thunder.
In the northeast is the third bright star Deneb, marking the tail of Cygnus, the Swan. There are many legends that might account for the presence of a Swan in the heavens. One myth states that the Swan represents Orpheus, who was slain by Bacchus. However Orpheus' music was so wonderful that he was changed into a Swan and placed in the heavens near his beloved harp.
The Delta Aquarids Meteor Shower peaks on the night of July 28th to 29th. It can produce up to 20 meteors per hour at its peak. The second quarter moon will block and overpower the fainter meteors this year. The best place to view the meteor will be from a dark location, between midnight and dawn. VIEW THE MAP SO THAT THE NORTH INDICATOR IS FACING NORTH
Three planets are visible in the later evening, early morning: Saturn rises in the east around 11:00 p.m. and is seen against the background of faint stars that form Aquarius, Mars rises about 2:30 a.m., in Aries, another constellation with no bright stars, and Jupiter will be visible in the East as dawn approaches.
