Tel: (340) 773-1404 Fax: (340) 713-9806 Welcome to our beautiful Virgin Islands of the United States. Our islands are unique in what they each offer and our communities are filled with people who are proud of our storied history. While visiting, I encourage you to immerse yourself in our culture and to explore the unique offerings of all four Islands that make up our paradise. St. Croix, the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, sits to the south of our small island chain and is renowned for its pastoral landscapes, Danish architecture and historical landmarks. With its offshore wrecks and unbelievably beautiful underwater reefs, St. Croix is also a popular destination for diving enthusiasts. Be sure to visit the historic towns of Frederiksted and Christiansted and indulge in St. Croix’s renowned art and delicious culinary scenes. St. John is one of the smaller U.S. Virgin Islands and conservation center of the territory. It is best known for its pristine beaches and the attractions within the Virgin Islands National Park, which occupies more than half the island. The lands in the Virgin Islands National Park shelter migrant birds and the mangroves support corals and anemones. As with all the Virgin islands, you will find that St. John provides a rich mix of our culture and history. St. Thomas is our business and shopping center and the seat of government. Charlotte Amalie is the capital town of the U.S. Virgin Islands and is one of the busiest ports of call for cruise ships in the Caribbean. St. Thomas is among the most popular destinations in the Caribbean for sailing and yachting enthusiasts. Water Island is the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands and rests just off the coast of St. Thomas. It is mostly residential but offers fun attractions like Honeymoon Beach and quaint accommodations. The island can be reached by ferry from the Crown Bay Marina or by other vessels. As the Lieutenant Governor and Governor, both Treganza Roach and I wish you a warm, fun-filled stay and please accept our invitation to return often to our paradise. Albert Bryan, Jr. Governor

They’ve found a way to bring back those incredible textiles, create new designs, and mix it all with new-found objects. This store will, no doubt, evolve into something very special for St. Croix. Located in Gallows Bay, in the orange Arawak building, with front and back entrances. Our Past Transformed into our Future by Monique Clendinen Watson
What is VIAC?
The Virgin Islands Architecture Center for Built Heritage and Crafts, Inc., known as VIAC is a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization, with a focus on community economic development. VIAC is restoring the historic Old Barracks property in Christiansted, St. Croix into an urban campus and education lab that will research, teach, and present the architectural and building craft traditions unique to the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean. VIAC is administered by a board of directors and an advisory board that consists of experts in architecture, culture, education, and community development. VIAC has partnered with PLACE, a 501(c)3 non-profit to serve as its fiscal agent, provide support in financial grant management and reporting and lend expertise in community development and historic preservation.
What is our vision?
The transformation of the Old Barracks Property into an architectural urban campus and education lab will be a catalyst for the evolution of the town of Christiansted. We hope that the school will become an anchor property for a culture and arts economic development corridor which will provide opportunities for workforce development and training, small business development and cultural heritage tourism. With a special focus on the African Danish historic aesthetic found in Virgin Islands towns and the architectural preservation practices found throughout the Caribbean, VIAC hopes to offer two-year degrees and certifications in association with schools in Puerto Rico, the United States, Ghana, and Denmark. VIAC hopes to offer degrees and certifications in the building crafts such as metalwork, painting, carpentry, cabinet making, masonry and draftsmanship. VIAC hopes to offer classes in the history and culture of the Virgin Islands and in small business development and entrepreneurship. VIAC wants to research and teach sustainable and resilient building methodologies that address climate change, particularly the issues that face the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean. With funding from the Department of Interior Office of Insular Affairs, VIAC convened local, national, and international experts last April to develop a strategic development plan for the school.
What challenges are we trying to address?
St. Croix and the entire U.S. Virgin Islands is in a period of transition. The socioeconomic structure that provided stability and prosperity in the latter half of the 20th century has eroded and new approaches to reinvigorating and re-energizing the built environment and the
community that lives and thrives here is of utmost importance as the 21st century unfolds. Recent economic pressures caused by the 2013 refinery closure, the 2017 hurricanes and the 2020 COVID pandemic have accelerated the need for innovative and effective approaches to the socioeconomic revival of Christiansted and the island of St. Croix. A key recommendation from the Urban Land Institute’s 2018 Report on Christiansted, a post disaster assessment on the best way to address the economic challenges facing the town, was to “make interventions that support the existing physical, social, cultural, economic and environmental fabric with a clear-cut plan and strategy.” The report specifically points to the need to “enhance and grow tourism around the island’s undervalued assets: land, sea, and other natural environments; historic architectural fabric; unique cultural character, history, and emerging cottage industries.” In the aftermath of the 2017 hurricanes, there was a shortage of skilled local workers and an influx of workers from off-island were brought in to do recovery work. According to reports, this inflated the cost of living by as much as 400 percent. Rental prices rose sharply, and local residents were priced out of the market. With a fear of gentrification in Christiansted and the other historic towns in the Virgin Islands, there is a need for a conscious response to protect family properties and other cultural spaces before they are developed without regard for historic preservation. The territory needs to empower local stakeholders with the necessary skills so they can become a vital part of the rebuilding and recovery of the Virgin Islands economy.
How will VIAC impact the community?
The Barracks in 1925
Visualization Exhibition & Circulation Space
VIAC’s proposal to renovate an historical property into an architectural center that will train and educate young people and impact the built heritage by preparing skilled artisans to rehabilitate it, while simultaneously creating a cultural economic development corridor in the town of Christiansted aligns with these recommendations and will be an important step towards the future. Graduates of the center will become active stakeholders in restoration efforts that can provide affordable housing that will allow residents to work and live in our historic towns. VIAC hopes to contribute to the development of a robust preservation economy in the Virgin Islands and the wider Caribbean that will positively impact people, and the built and natural environment. THE BEAUTY OF MARINE LIFE & IN CELEBRATION OF FAMILY
JUNE 22
I
JULY 22
Sam Halvorson

grew up in the beautiful mountains of western Montana. My love of art started when I was around 10 years old and it became my favorite subject in school. Math and science, though interesting, couldn't hold my attention nearly as strongly as art. This desire for art grew stronger through grade school, junior high, high school, the Air Force and then college.
I started scuba diving in the lakes and rivers around western Montana at the then ripe old age of 35. After a couple years of recreational diving I decided to become a dive instructor and headed to southern California. Four different jobs and three years later I moved to St. Croix. Working as a divemaster/instructor I studied the marine life. I was asked daily what this fish or that fish was. What kind of turtle was that. Is that an Eagle Ray or a Manta Ray. So I studied the fish ID books daily. I’m still learning. Things were going along nicely for me here on St. Croix even though I hadn’t picked up a paint brush for a couple years. Then Covid hit! Lots of time on my hands! What to do? I brushed the dust off of my art supplies and began painting with a vengeance. In the last two years I have finished over a hundred paintings and have rediscovered my love to create the beauty all around us.
Shark’s Feast.
Turtle Ridge.
I served 4 years in the Air Force then enrolled in the University of Montana. After a year in general studies I gravitated to the art department. My favorite classes were painting (watercolor) and ceramics. I still would love to be able to throw pots on the wheel or get my hands and fingers into a slab of clay and create something functional. However watercolor painting is a great way to create art and is something you can do in your home without a sizable expense or dedicated studio.

’m a mom to Israel, Caleb, and Ta’Liyah Popo, 7th generation Crucian, and 3rd generation Encarnación. My first camera was a 35 mm Pentax; I learned photography from Ron Cox as a St. Dunstan’s student and have loved capturing images and memories ever since. I used reunion photos taken by Petrus and random family photos to create the collage, which represents eight branches across four generations of Encarnacións. According to our family’s historical accounts, Evaristo was a skilled farmer and Marcelina, an herbalist. They passed away before I was born, but my grandmother had a metal plate with a picture of her mother, Marcelina. I often wondered if any of us took after her in any way. My late dad, Felix “Capt.” Llanos, called me his “cultural girl” because of my fixation with connections and our history. After years of planning events, his generation turned the reins over to mine. Family from six branches across three generations plan annual gatherings and reunion activities. Our 2017 Reunion was a beautiful tribute to our matriarch, Maria “Aurora” Encarnacion, our ancestral home, Vieques, and the roots my great grandparents planted on St. Croix. The decorator used Pavas, a farmer’s straw hat made from Puerto Rican hat palm, and vibrant madras to decorate. Moko Jumbies and Bomba dancers - a dance in Puerto Rico, influenced by African roots, that symbolizes defiance and rejection of oppression - delighted the crowd with surprise performances. The 95th reunion promises to be a spectacular week of events, including a softball clinic and tournament, which are open to the public, on Saturday, July 2 at Canegata ballpark! Our legacy was built by the machete and ax, by hard work. We are celebrating the legacy, life, and beauty of connections, and appreciate those who share in our excitement. ¡Somos una familia! See feature on Page 59.

Our Danish Connection The Scandinavian country of Denmark was among the European contenders for ownership of Caribbean islands and acquired St. Thomas in 1660, St. John in 1718, and St. Croix, purchased from France in 1733. (See page 48 for historical details.) Denmark left its mark here in many ways that have contributed to a close relationship between Danes and the U.S. Virgin Islands following the 1917 Transfer, bringing thousands of Danish visitors. Examples of this closeness are: • The handsome, still functioning 18th and 19th century architecture – official, commercial and private, built of Danish brick brought as ship ballast.

ince early times, seeking a joyful time has been identified with our population. In the time of enslavement, the few holidays allowed to the field workers brought a happy break of music and dancing and socializing with others from other plantations. These old traditions have been transposed to our happier times of freedom now enjoyed by the descendants of the enslaved. Appropriately, our annual celebration of Emancipation here, in what was then known as the Danish West Indies, that took place on July 3, 1848, offers delightful cultural, carnival-like performances for large numbers of our community. We have been restrained by health concerns for a long period from the important release of tension that these events bring. Along with our celebration as Americans of our July 4 holiday, usually with a parade, these two back-to-back celebrations are preceded this year by a Folklife Festival starting June 25, with

• A friendly Crucian population that welcomes and looks out for visiting Danes.

presentations of Quelbe music performed by the legendary Stanley and the Ten Sleepless Knights band, a food fair of local cuisine at its best, and local art and crafts displays. The May Agricultural Fair, that was postponed from its normal February schedule, helped bring a sense of normalcy to our community. We are fortunate to have a well-run health system that has protected us from serious virus outbreaks, and that in itself is worthy of celebration. While our island culture of adhering to traditions may have a few detractions when it comes to resisting change, it offers a stability and solidarity that sustains us in difficult times. Dive Experience—The Names Says It All!
Dive Experience turns 39 this year! Owner Michelle Pugh, a 46-year resident of St. Croix, learned to dive in LA in 1970. It all started with a high school class in tide pool biology followed by swimming lessons and an open water dive class at North Hollywood YMCA. Michelle dived weekends and holidays and worked part time with Fish & Wildlife in the summers while attending school in San Diego. In the fall of 1977, she had a chance to go to St. Croix to teach diving. She fell in love with St. Croix and its diving and decided to start her own business. One of her most incredible dives was in 1979 as a photographer in Canada shooting killer whales for the book, A Whale Called Killer, by Erich Hoyt—an experience that would serve her well later on. In 1993, along with Jacques Cousteau, Michelle was inducted into the Platinum Pro 5000, through SSI, and in March of 2004 into the Women Divers Hall of Fame for being the first woman to dive with killer whales in the wild, the first American woman to teach diving in Moscow, Russia, and for establishing the mooring system on St. Croix. That same year, Michelle was given the SBDC and Congressional Award for

Sam Halvorson and Michelle Pugh. Entrepreneurial Success. Toting a 100-ton Captain’s License, she has been on the St. Croix Fisheries Advisory Committee and on the Caribbean Council for Fisheries Management here since 1989. Michelle, who’s made over 10,000 dives on St. Croix, loves diving and it shows! “I am the only dive center owner on St Croix that actually dives every day—guiding lots of customers by request,” she says. Michelle’s diving adventures include the West coast
(Mexico to Canada), the East coast (Virginia to Rhode Island), the Red Sea, Australia, Antarctica, Solomon Islands, lots of Caribbean islands plus Borneo and the Philippines and has dived every continent! Sam Halvorson, Captain, Instructor, Dive Master, and Videographer, has been on board for 30 years. He knows all the reefs and secret locations of many fish. His videos are a favorite souvenir! And now you can purchase one of his watercolors in the shop. See feature on Page 36 to find out how Sam came to be such a fantastic artist and made the cover of this magazine’s June issue! Dive Experience is working locally with the Florida based Reef Environmental Education Foundation to help curb the Lion Fish invasion on St. Croix offering a supervised afternoon dive to hunt them. “With Dive Experience reaching 39 years and me with over 44years of only being in the dive business, I’d like to think we’re simply the best at what we do.” Truly, the name says it all!

Red Cross at Work in our Island Community by Tina Beazer, Executive Director, American Red Cross of the Virgin Islands
T
he Red Cross of the Virgin Islands traces its history back to 1904, when the islands were under the rule of Denmark. Yet, with more than a century of service, we are often asked, “What does the Red Cross do here?” Simply stated, we provide programs and services that help our island community prepare for, respond to and recover from disaster big and small. Preparedness is key for surviving both expected and unexpected hazards. We offer a variety of free programs to educate individuals, families and our community about hazard preparedness. Presentations are ageappropriate for kindergarteners through senior citizens, and can be delivered in-person or virtually. Another valuable service we provide is home fire intervention. Our Disaster Action Team volunteers work alongside the Virgin Islands Fire Department, providing comfort and assistance to families after home fires. Additionally, to help prevent these tragedies, we hold annual Sound the Alarm events to educate homeowners about fire safety and install new alarms in homes that need them, at no cost. As many Virgin Islanders know, Red Cross also works with the Department of Human Services to provide volunteer support and resources for emergency shelters during major disasters. While the territory has been spared a direct hit in recent years, history shows us we need to maintain a constant state of readiness for these potential threats. Do not wait until a hurricane is predicted to prepare. Stop by one of our offices and pick up a brochure or magnet for your home, office or gathering place. Red Cross offices are located in Christiansted, St. Croix and Frenchtown, St. Thomas (serving St. Thomas, St. John and Water Island). Consider joining our humanitarian mission as a volunteer.

Destination St. Croix HELPFUL INFORMATION
7 FLAG HISTORY HISTORY is what this island has an abundance of, going back several thousand years. Back then, the Amerindian population that had migrated here from South America called it Ay Ay. A tribe known as Caribs lent their name to the region and was encountered at Salt River in 1493 by the first Europeans, the 17-ship fleet of Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to the new world. He claimed the island for Spain and called it Santa Cruz, the Spanish version of its present name. Over the following centuries, many European nations started exploiting the Caribbean archipelago, with the British, Dutch, and French joining Spain in taking possession of the rich resources found in some of the islands, battling pirates that posed a dramatic challenge to the treasures derived from mineral resources. But agriculture, in the form of sugar cane cultivation, turned out to be a winning formula, as sugar, and its by-product rum, were incredibly valuable crops. Under changing ownership by the Dutch, British and French, including a brief ownership by the Knights of Malta, this island did not prosper, and it was sparsely colonized. The French, that owned it from the mid-1600’s and gave it its present name, actually abandoned it around 1700 having failed at developing a viable plantation economy. For over 30 years St. Croix returned to its natural state, when a business enterprise of the little Scandinavian nation of Denmark, that since 1666 had taken possession of St. Thomas and later St. John to the north of St. Croix, in 1733 made the
48 • June / July 22
decision to expand and purchase this island from the French. Known as the Danish West India and Guinea Company, it excelled in sugar cultivation and export made possible by slave trade from West Africa, a necessity for developing a large-scale operation of sugar cane harvests, for which this island was ideally suited thanks to its terrain and rainfall. In no time, the island was transformed, with forests giving way to planted sugar cane fields by thousands of enslaved persons who, after being brought here under horrific conditions, toiled in the fields under the hot sun. The island’s cane fields and accompanying estate structures were owned by an assortment of nationalities, with the English, Scots and Irish dominating, but the military and administration was run by Danes, after the island ownership was conferred to the Danish king in 1771. Soon, a lot of money was made here, but at a high cost of human life. The island posed health risks from tropical diseases and poor hygienic standards and opposition to the cruel treatment of the enslaved eventually brought about emancipation in 1848, several years after the British-owned islands had initiated it. But the fact that cane sugar was not so valuable since beet sugar now competed with it made conditions worse, and a revolt in 1878 led to further decline. So the islands of the Danish West Indies, as the three were called, were a sad sight and, in the early 20th century when WW1 was underway, the United States took interest in us for our strategic location, particularly as the Panama Canal had just been completed, and Germany was threatening to take possession of us. At a price of $25 million in gold, the transfer of the islands, to be known as the United States Virgin Islands, took place on March 31, 1917. And, the rest is History, of a different kind.
DRIVE LEFT Whether renting a car or crossing the street, it is vital to remember that traffic in the USVI flows from the left side of the road. St. Croix has two towns—Christiansted at the center on the North Shore and Frederiksted at the West End. The Caribbean Sea, which surrounds the island, is always there to guide you along the roads that wind around the coast. Car rental agencies have a variety of vehicles available from sporty jeeps to roomy air-conditioned sedans, vans, and SUVs. The average price usually includes unlimited mileage but you fill the tank upon return! Both US and other driver’s licenses are recognized. The driver and front seat passenger are required by law to use seat belts and cell phone talking or texting is not allowed. Parking in Christiansted is limited. There is daytime parking in the National Park Service lot near Ft. Christiansvaern, until 4:30 pm, and a public lot with fees on Strand and King Cross Street. Running from mid-island west to within 1 mile of Frederiksted is the 4-lane, divided Melvin H. Evans Highway. The speed limit is 55. In other areas, the 35 mph limit applies; in town, 20 mph unless otherwise posted.
WORSHIP St. Croix’s history is mirrored in its old church structures. The Moravian brethren, arriving here in the 1730s from Saxony in today’s Germany, founded their mission to bring Christianity to the enslaved part of the population. The historic Anglican (Episcopalian) churches built in Gothic style include St. John’s in Christiansted and, in Frederiksted, St. Paul’s church. The large number of Irish settlers, along with Englishmen and Hispanics, have contributed to the presence of the Catholic church; Holy Cross in Christiansted is the oldest in the Virgin Islands. The Danish rule of the island from 1733 to 1917 brought the Lutheran church, which still plays a large role here. Lord God of Sabaoth in Christiansted occupies the former Dutch Reformed Church; Holy Trinity in Frederiksted was built shortly after the town was founded. The Dutch Reformed church (Presbyterian) now has a new mid-island home. There are 150 churches on St. Croix, from SeventhDay Adventist to Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, and many more. Church attendance and activities are important to a large part of our population; visitors are always welcome at services, often a high point in their island experience. Many other faiths offer places of worship—a Jewish synagogue, a Hindu temple, and a Muslim mosque, to name a few. A church listing can be found in the yellow pages of our local phone book beginning on Page 48.

No passports needed for US citizens! CLIMATE. Year-round temps are in the 80s during the day, 70s at night, with summer somewhat warmer. Easterly trade winds keep the humidity down. Most showers are over in minutes. Residents collect rainwater from their roof into household cisterns; saltwater distillation plants help the supply. With water scarce, it is used sparingly.
HOLIDAYS. We celebrate Federal and Local holidays; the government closes for both, banks close for most, shops close on major holidays.

St. Croix Dive Sites A series of dive site descriptions. 9.
Salt River East Wall – Named after the plantation on shore, look for lots of nice coral and tons of Black Durgans. Also the remains of upwelling pipes from a shrimp farm that Texas A&M had in the 1970s.
10.
Salt River West Wall – This is a small sea mount that starts in 90 feet of water. Many times, Reef Sharks are seen here as well as larger fish like Grouper and Snapper.

CHRISTIANSTED WALKING TOUR Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of Christiansted at the site of the Old Scale House 1 on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service. Major construction of a new bulkhead for the Wharf is limiting access to this building that displays the scale used in former days to weigh barrels of rum and sugar.

Fort Christiansvaern 3 was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appearance reflects the 1830’s period.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions and ongoing construction, access to the Fort for the time being is limited but free of charge. It is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm which coincides with the hours of the adjacent Fort Parking Lot whose hours are strictly enforced. Brochures available at the Visitor Center. The Steeple Building 4 across Hospital Street, formerly the Lutheran Church, dates from 1753. This site, on the Walking Tour, is currently closed for renovation. Across Company Street lies the onetime Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse 5 , built in 1749 as a storage facility for hundreds of barrels of sugar and rum. In its courtyard, slave auctions were formerly held. Originally, Government House 6 on King Street, was built as a home for a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. Due to COVID-19 restrictions tours of the site have temporarily been suspended.

N CHRISTIANSTED
The Lord God of Sabaoth Lutheran Church 7 across Queen Cross Street on King Street was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added. Across on Company Street is the historic Lutheran Parish Hall, and in the courtyard the former Pastor’s residence. Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall 8 on the left corner. Opened in 1828 by Danish pharmacist Peder Eggers Bentzon, the town’s first pharmacy remained here until 1970. Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market 9 , laid out in the original town plan from 1735 and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.

Christiansted National Historic Site Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park Saystem in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.” Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors. Your tour of Frederiksted begins at Fort Frederik 1 by the cruise ship pier and waterfront park. Construction on the Fort began in 1752 and was completed in 1760. Featuring a museum with several permanent exhibits, and an art gallery, it is open Monday – Friday, 8:30 am to 4 pm. Admission $5., children under 12 free. A public beach with showers and bathrooms is next to Fort Frederik. Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park 2 named for the renowned slave rebellion leader, a bust of whom is displayed there. The Oscar E. Henry Customs House 3 was built in the 1800s. The Freedom Fountain 4, facing the pier, was installed for the Emancipation’s 150th Anniversary Celebration. After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, parts of the town were rebuilt in Victorian style. Victoria House 5, on Strand Street, preserves 63Frederiksted architecture of that time. the The Visitor’s Bureau 6 is located upstairs on Strand Street above the Frederiksted Mall and next door to the historic light blue building housing the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts 7. Free admission to exhibits and gift shop. Frederiksted is home to several historic churches, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church 8, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church 9, Friedensberg Moravian Church 10, and St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church 11. The handsomely restored Arthur Abel Complex 12, formerly The Danish School (1799), is now the office of the Lieutenant Governor in Frederiksted at Hospital and Market Street. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library 13, built in 1803. Just behind it lies the Dorsch Theater 14, an open-air stage and event site. The Market Place 15, is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted.

Celebrating
the Legacy by Liz Llanos
O
Great Grandparents & Grand Children
married to Ana Gomez, and was a mechanic at Bethlehem Works with VICORP and General Motors.
n May 15, 1927, Evaristo “Don Baro” Encarnación and Marcelina Alejandro Cruz, an herbalist and his wife, sailed from Vieques aboard the ship Resolution and arrived on St. Croix two days later.
“Monche” married Juanita “Jenny” Marrero and worked for Rassmusen Enterprises for 24 years, owned “La Cotorra” Mineral Spring Water Company, and was the Chief Storeroom Keeper at Public Works. He was a skilled woodworker and built a replica of Resolution in just 6-7 weeks.
Accompanying them were their 14 children—Regalado “Galo,” Eulogia “Linda,” Pedro, Severina “Fela,” Andrés “Dede,” Gregorio “Goyo,” Petronila “Ina,” Cándido “Candito,” Evaristo “Birín,” Antonio “Toño,” Ramón “Monche,” Luis “Lulú,” María, an adopted son, Juan Acosta, and Evaristo’s brother, Vidal.
“Lulú,” married Olive Barbel, a watchmaker who worked for Island Transport and Tropical Shipping. Maria married Audelí Adames, and was a businesswoman. Juan Acosta was married to Guillermina Quiñones and worked as a clerk in private industry.
The year before, Mrs. Jorgensen, owner of Castle Nugent Farm, needed a farm manager and asked her neighbor, Manuel “Manolo” Román, to find someone to clear and manage the farm. Manolo, also from Vieques, knew Evaristo was skilled and sent Innocencio “Cencio” Torres to Vieques to offer the job to him. He initially declined because his mother, Mama Antonia, was ill. The following year, after she died, Evaristo and his family set sail for a new beginning, clearing the land and wrangling cows on the farm.
Evaristo and Marcelina Encarnación taught their children to uphold their values, traditions, and culture, and produced generations of hard workers whose contributions to the Virgin Islands are notable. Their rich legacy is also evident in their achievements in sports, arts, music, workplace, and politics.
They improved their standard of living and the economic conditions on St. Croix. Many of the fourteen children were involved in the establishment of various businesses and brought an abundance of skills and their love of music and musicianship. They integrated themselves into the culture and customs of the Virgin Islands. “Galo” was an established barber and musician who, along with his wife Juaquina, established himself in the town of Frederiksted. “Linda” was a homemaker and married Felix Llanos, a barber. Pedro married María Serrano, a schoolteacher, and was a barber known for his cockfighting skills and keen knowledge of the rules. “Fela” married Tomás Leguillou and was a seamstress and business partner with her husband. Their store, located by the Christiansted market, remained even after Hurricane Hugo ravaged the island in 1989. “Dede,” a painter in private industry, worked for Public Works and was married first to María Quiñones, a seamstress, and then Delia Brandt, an administrative assistant. “Goyo” was married to Celestina Carrillo, and worked in private industry as a clerk. “Ina” was a seamstress who

married Antonio Felix; they were instrumental in establishing an import/export business servicing other merchants on the island. Cándido “Candito” was married to Sabina Encarnación. He was a heavy equipment operator, painter, construction supervisor and had a trucking business. He was one of the first Puerto Ricans to graduate from St. Mary’s School. Evaristo “Birín” married Inez Adams, a cook, and was a taxi driver, fisherman, truck driver, an employee of Public Works, and Governor Paiwonsky’s chauffer. Antonio “Toño”
This year, to celebrate the 95th Anniversary of their arrival, our family has organized reunion activities from July 2 - 9, including a softball clinic and tournament open to the public on July 2 at the DC Canegata Ballpark. As Reunion Committee Chair, I estimate that 200-350 people will attend one or more of the events, including a community service day, dinner banquet, and family beach party. Evaristo and Marcelina’s grandchildren have the historical account of the difficult move to St. Croix, which proved to be rewarding, inscribed on their hearts. Cristobal “Machin” Encarnación listened to his uncles recount stories of Don Baro, who credited the family’s success to hard work. No fue un golpe de suerte; era hacha y machete, “It was not a stroke of luck; it was an ax and a machete” that gave them a chance at a better life. The family celebrates reunions every 5 years and gathers annually at the beach. They credit elders, like Cristobal, Linda, Angel, Felix (d), Roberto, Guillermo, Rafael (d), Pete, Luis & Doris (d), and Zoraida & Lauritz (d), with keeping the family together as one family, una familia! Several bright stars dominate the early nighttime sky this time of year and planets make pre-dawn a great time to sky watch. Once the sky grows dark, low in the western sky is the bright star Regulus, the heart of Leo, the Lion. It is hard to find a lion in this part of the sky. So, why did people call this part of the sky Leo? Long ago these stars were seen during the summer months when water in the outlying areas dried up and thus the lions would come down to the river. People of course, lived near the river and people and the lions did not get along. So, when you see the Sun move into the area of the sky with the stars of the lion in the sky, look out for the real lions are around. You probably will be able to see that Regulus is the period at the base of a backwards question mark. The top of the question marks forms the lion’s head. A little farther east a triangle made of fainter stars forms the lion’s hind quarters and tail. Almost directly overhead is Arcturus, in Boötes, the Herdsman. Boötes is also known as the bear driver, since he seems to be driving the Great Bear, Ursa Major, across the sky. Just to the east of Arcturus and Boötes is a semicircle of faint stars. This is Corona Borealis, the Northern Crown. Southwest of Arcturus is another bright star, Spica in Virgo. According to one legend, Spica is a grain of wheat and Virgo is the goddess of the harvest.

In the southeast you will find Antares, the heart of Scorpius, the Scorpion. Stars fainter than Antares, but still fairly bright, form the Scorpion’s body and long curved tail. According to legend, Orion was a mighty hunter. Orion boasted that he could defeat any animal on Earth in battle. Suddenly a scorpion appeared, stung Orion on the foot and Orion died. But, Orion was such a great hunter that he was placed in the sky; as was the scorpion. However, you never see Orion and the Scorpion in the sky at the same time. Scorpius is one of twelve constellations that form a band that encircles the sky. It is to the zodiac that we must look to see the planets. You probably know the names of some if not all the constellations of the zodiac. Most are harder to see than the Scorpion. West of the Scorpion are fainter stars that form Libra, the Scales. To the East of the Scorpio’s tail is Sagittarius, a centaur. This creature is half man and half horse. Sagittarius is a friend of Orion and he is firing an arrow at the Scorpion. You will probably have a great deal of trouble trying to see Sagittarius. Some people use the brightest stars of Sagittarius to form a teapot. Perhaps you can see the handle, the top of the pot and the spout. And, it’s pouring hot tea all over the Scorpion! On June 21st the solstice occurs at 05:05 a.m. The North Pole of the Earth will be tilted toward the Sun. The Sun will have reached
its most northerly point in the sky and will be directly over the Tropic of Cancer. This is the first day of summer (summer solstice) in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of winter (winter solstice) in the Southern Hemisphere. The night of July 28th-29th is the maximum of Delta Aquarids Meteor Shower. This is an average shower that can produce up to 20 meteors per hour at its peak. The best time to look is between midnight and dawn from a good dark location. Four planets will dominate the eastern sky with Saturn being the first to rise around 10:30 p.m., followed by the bright Jupiter at about 12:30 a.m., then Mars rises at about 1:30 a.m., and finally the very bright Venus at around 4:00 a.m. If you are up before dawn overpowers the night, these four planets will be very easy to spot. While you are gazing at these planets, look high in the western sky for three bright stars. Since these three form a large triangle that is visible during the Summer months, up North, they are called the Summer Triangle. Each bright star marks a different, star group or constellation. Brightest and lowest in the northwest is Vega, in Lyra the Harp. To the Southwest is Altair, in Aquila, the Eagle. Deneb is to the East of Vega and marks the tail of Cygnus, the Swan. Perhaps you can see a Swan here. Faint stars form the Swans body and long neck and others the bird’s wings.
