Tel: (340) 772-1000 Fax: (340) 772-0333 Welcome to our beautiful Virgin Islands of the United States. Our islands are unique in what they each offer and our communities are filled with people who are proud of our storied history. While visiting, I encourage you to immerse yourself in our culture and to explore the unique offerings of all four Islands that make up our paradise.

St. Croix, the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, sits to the south of our small island chain and is renowned for its pastoral landscapes, Danish architecture and historical landmarks. With its offshore wrecks and unbelievably beautiful underwater reefs, St. Croix is also a popular destination for diving enthusiasts. Be sure to visit the historic towns of Frederiksted and Christiansted and indulge in St. Croix’s renowned art and delicious culinary scenes. St. John is one of the smaller U.S. Virgin Islands and conservation center of the territory. It is best known for its pristine beaches and the attractions within the Virgin Islands National Park, which occupies more than half the island. The lands in the Virgin Islands National Park shelter migrant birds and the mangroves support corals and anemones. As with all the Virgin islands, you will find that St. John provides a rich mix of our culture and history. St. Thomas is our business and shopping center and the seat of government. Charlotte Amalie is the capital town of the U.S. Virgin Islands and is one of the busiest ports of call for cruise ships in the Caribbean. St. Thomas is among the most popular destinations in the Caribbean for sailing and yachting enthusiasts. Water Island is the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands and rests just off the coast of St. Thomas. It is mostly residential but offers fun attractions like Honeymoon Beach and quaint accommodations. The island can be reached by ferry from the Crown Bay Marina or by other vessels. As the Lieutenant Governor and Governor, both Treganza Roach and I wish you a warm, fun-filled stay and please accept our invitation to return often to our paradise. Albert Bryan, Jr. Governor

BOOK

SIGNING JAN 12, 4:30PM

A

pple Gidley’s latest book, Crucian Fusion - Essays, Tales, Conversations, is a collection of fact and fiction that speaks to the rich history as well as present day St Croix and is a book to be dipped into - over coffee or maybe a rum, at the beach or along the Boardwalk, as the sun rises or sets. Featuring conversations with eight people - Hans Lawaetz, Stanley Jacobs, Resa O’Reilly, Nina York, Doc Petersen, Bob Apfel, Toni Lance and Lucien Downes - all of whom contribute to the fabric of Crucian society Doc Petersen whether through the arts, culture and music, farming, education and sport. One moment light-hearted memories of growing up on St Croix or arriving here, the next, deeply-felt views about issues surrounding The Big Island, all with wonderful anecdotes added to the mix. Essays written since 2013 speak to thoughts provoked by living on St Croix, and five short stories round out the rest of Crucian Fusion. One tale Lucien Downes speaks to emancipation as seen through a child’s eyes, another talks about the indentured laborers imported from India in 1863, still another imagines rumrunning during Prohibition. Crucian Fusion is for islanders, residents and visitors interested in this spectacular part of America’s Caribbean and is, above all, a tribute to St Croix. Hans Lawaetz

A book signing will be held at Undercover Books, Gallows Bay, on Wednesday, 12th January, 2022 at 4.30pm.

GOAT SOUP & WHISKEY

T

he Goat Soup and Whiskey is reopening for their 3rd season on December 10 offering a scratch, made to order menu and friendly service in an alfresco dining room with views of Buck Island and the Caribbean Sea. Access to fresh seafood and lobster has allowed the chefs to create nightly specials. Owner, Scotty Jackson, used to bring the Goat family to St. Croix in the “shoulder” seasons, once their Keystone slowed down and before their Put-in-Bay location would reopen for summer. He quickly realized the tranquility and beauty of St. Croix, and the warm and welcoming local culture, so began a long search for the right location to open the third Goat Soup and Whiskey. Coakley Bay, on St. Croix’s East End, is where it landed. The Goat combined their craft cocktails from the Ohio location and added new ones with unique, local ingredients. The chefs and their talented team have created many specials and dishes visitors and locals alike have come to enjoy. When you see the Goat Curry Soup or the Oxtail Stew on the soup boards, they are a must try and won’t last long! The Goat is open for take-out, lunch and dinner every day except Wednesday. Sunday Brunch is served from 10am - 2pm with lunch and dinner following. The Goat has quickly become a popular East End spot. Reservations are highly recommended. A NEW PHOTO EXHIBIT & AN EXPANDED GALLERY!

Malek Bascombe

Christa Ann Davis Molloy

Malek Bascombe is a St. Croix fine art photographer and founder of MRB Photography. The visual drama and artistry of his images are born of a keen eye for moods, culture and expression. A professional since 2011, Malek started in portrait photography but loves a range of other genres. In the photographic community, Malek has been frequently mentioned and recognized as an original artist and trendsetter. Where did you go to school? Central High School. Who influenced you the most? Photographer Lee Lashley was my biggest influence and mentor. Tell me about MRB Photography. Who are your clients? Musicians, dancers, corporate, models, students, families, and wedding parties. What’s your favorite subjects? Street Photography/Photo Journalism, capturing moments in real time that may never be duplicated. Black & white vs Color? Each have their strength and each may be essential to telling my story. Tell me about your images at the Cane Roots Art Gallery December Show. Festival has been sacred and special for me since I can remember. My Grandmother, Jessica Tutein Moolenaar, was the First Queen of Festival back in 1952. Now a photographer, it’s an amazing feeling to capture things I was able to participate in and enjoy as a child. The images are from past years that have never been seen and capture the culture, spirit, and essence of Crucian Christmas Festival helping us appreciate the blessing we had before the pandemic. Advice to young photographers? Seek out artists who inspire you, pick their brain, and invest the time in developing your skills. My work can be seen Dec 2-23 at Cane Roots Gallery on Company Street. It can also be found on MRBPHOTOGRAHPYVI on Instagram; bookings and inTeam Spirit. quiries can be made there as well.

Meet artist Christa-Ann Davis Molloy and her dazzling Christa’s Art Gallery! Not a creator of conventional dabble on canvas, her perspective takes you on a journey rich in history and culture through paintings, inspired products, and Sip& Paint Events! Behind the brush for over a decade, locals and visitors have been wooed by this young artist’s “well of genius” as she shapes the human experience through art. Born in Trinidad, Christa Ann re-settled on St. Croix where the magnetic pulse she felt drew her spirit to renowned artist Betsy Campen, as teacher and mentor. Their friendship reignited her childhood passion for art, rekindling the creatives within her, and manifesting itself in a line of products that ooze a rich cultural heritage. An educator by profession for 30 years, Christa-Ann has represented the USVI sharing her creations in Trinidad, Puerto Rico, New York and Denmark. Her Moko Jumbies, Quadrille Dancers, Steel Pan, Masqueraders, Stanley and The Ten Sleepless Knights portraits, historical or landscape images, and buildings bring history alive. Her stone coasters, trivets, shower curtains, clocks, bags, mats, throw pillows, umbrellas, face masks, wireless speakers, and art kits will forever celebrate what we want to keep as a memory. Purpose. Every piece I paint should tell a story to someone; I want my art to create words. Exhibit Venues, 2012-2021. We have Great, Unique gifts for all occasions. We are at historic Quin House, Company and King Cross Street, Christiansted. Come visit us, we can’t wait to show you our “creative playground”.

The Scandinavian country of Denmark was among the European contenders for ownership of Caribbean islands and acquired St. Thomas in 1660, St. John in 1718, and St. Croix, purchased from France in 1733. (See page 48 for historical details.) Denmark left its mark here in many ways that have contributed to a close relationship between Danes and the U.S. Virgin Islands following the 1917 Transfer, bringing thousands of Danish visitors. Examples of this closeness are:

OPENING OUR ISLANDS TO DANISH VISITORS BRINGS JOY by Nina York

It seems that Thanksgiving, a time of gratitude we celebrate in late November, is expanding this year for anyone who enjoys a friendly contact with other nations and cultures. For over a year and a half, the COVID-19 Pandemic has brought to a halt so much of international travel and multiple cultural and business activities that history can provide no comparison, and the tragic toll in human lives and suffering is mindboggling.

• The handsome, still functioning 18th and 19th century architecture – official, commercial and private, built of Danish brick brought as ship ballast. • Ruins of many plantation structures that once produced sugar and rum, particularly former windmills that ground sugar cane.

Flagranker. Danes will probably bring flag garlands, a typical tree decoration to celebrate Christmas in the tropics.

Our gratitude, speaking here from a U.S. Virgin Islands-Denmark viewpoint, is for the lifting of the travel ban between Europe and our island paradise. Since March 2020 we have been deprived of the enjoyment of Danish visitors, and we can sense the impatience felt among our many friends in Denmark to return to what to them was an important destination, some for pleasure, others for research. While tourism here was fortunate to thrive this past summer with visitors from the mainland, the Europeans have been far more restricted. We must realize that the disruption caused by the Pandemic has been so deep that we can’t expect this promising news to signal a total return to normal. With newly reopened hotels and guesthouses, we seem to be well equipped for a successful winter season. The arrival of our Danish friends (all vaccinated!) is highly welcomed, and we urge our Crucian community to join in making them feel safe and welcomed. Nina York, born in Denmark but a St. Croix resident since 1976, has been a contributor for this publication since 2009 and was its Managing Editor from 1990-2003. She now offers tours for visitors from Denmark and the mainland, does translations, and sells her books, historic maps, and print reproductions. December 21 / Januar y 22 • 39

Destination St. Croix GOOD TO KNOW!

DRIVE LEFT Whether renting a car or crossing the street, it is vital to remember that traffic in the USVI flows from the left side of the road. St. Croix has two towns—Christiansted at the center on the North Shore and Frederiksted at the West End. The Caribbean Sea, which surrounds the island, is always there to guide you along the roads that wind around the coast. Car rental agencies have a variety of vehicles available from sporty jeeps to roomy air-conditioned sedans, vans, and SUVs. The average price usually includes unlimited mileage but you fill the tank upon return! Both US and other driver’s licenses are recognized. The driver and front seat passenger are required by law to use seat belts and cell phone talking or texting is not allowed. Parking in Christiansted is limited. There is daytime parking in the National Park Service lot near Ft. Christiansvaern, until 4:30 pm, and a public lot with fees on Strand and King Cross Street. Running from mid-island west to within 1 mile of Frederiksted is the 4-lane, divided Melvin H. Evans Highway. The speed limit is 55. In other areas, the 35 mph limit applies; in town, 20 mph unless otherwise posted.

WORSHIP St. Croix’s history is mirrored in its old church structures. The Moravian brethren, arriving here in the 1730s from Saxony in today’s Germany, founded their mission to bring Christianity to the enslaved part of the population. The historic Anglican (Episcopalian) churches built in Gothic style include St. John’s in Christiansted and, in Frederiksted, St. Paul’s church. The large number of Irish settlers, along with Englishmen and Hispanics, have contributed to the presence of the Catholic church; Holy Cross in Christiansted is the oldest in the Virgin Islands. The Danish rule of the island from 1733 to 1917 brought the Lutheran church, which still plays a large role here. Lord God of Sabaoth in Christiansted occupies the former Dutch Reformed Church; Holy Trinity in Frederiksted was built shortly after the town was founded. The Dutch Reformed church (Presbyterian) now has a new midisland home. There are 150 churches on St. Croix, from SeventhDay Adventist to Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, and many more. Church attendance and activities are important to a large part of our population; visitors are always welcome at services, often a high point in their island experience. Many other faiths offer places of worship—a Jewish synagogue, a Hindu temple, and a Muslim mosque, to name a few. A church listing can be found in the yellow pages of our local phone book beginning on Page 48. 48 • December 21 / Januar y 22

7 FLAG HISTORY HISTORY is what this island has an abundance of, going back several thousand years. Back then, the Amerindian population that had migrated here from South America called it Ay Ay. A tribe known as Caribs lent their name to the region and was encountered at Salt River in 1493 by the first Europeans, the 17-ship fleet of Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to the new world. He claimed the island for Spain and called it Santa Cruz, the Spanish version of its present name. Over the following centuries, many European nations started exploiting the Caribbean archipelago, with the British, Dutch, and French joining Spain in taking possession of the rich resources found in some of the islands, battling pirates that posed a dramatic challenge to the treasures derived from mineral resources. But agriculture, in the form of sugar cane cultivation, turned out to be a winning formula, as sugar, and its by-product rum, were incredibly valuable crops. Under changing ownership by the Dutch, British and French, including a brief ownership by the Knights of Malta, this island did not prosper, and it was sparsely colonized. The French, that owned it from the mid-1600’s and gave it its present name, actually abandoned it around 1700 having failed at developing a viable plantation economy. For over 30 years St. Croix returned to its natural state, when a business enterprise of the little Scandinavian nation of Denmark, that since 1666 had taken possession of St. Thomas and later St. John to the north of St. Croix, in 1733 made the

decision to expand and purchase this island from the French. Known as the Danish West India and Guinea Company, it excelled in sugar cultivation and export made possible by slave trade from West Africa, a necessity for developing a large-scale operation of sugar cane harvests, for which this island was ideally suited thanks to its terrain and rainfall. In no time, the island was transformed, with forests giving way to planted sugar cane fields by thousands of enslaved persons who, after being brought here under horrific conditions, toiled in the fields under the hot sun. The island’s cane fields and accompanying estate structures were owned by an assortment of nationalities, with the English, Scots and Irish dominating, but the military and administration was run by Danes, after the island ownership was conferred to the Danish king in 1771. Soon, a lot of money was made here, but at a high cost of human life. The island posed health risks from tropical diseases and poor hygienic standards and opposition to the cruel treatment of the enslaved eventually brought about emancipation in 1848, several years after the British-owned islands had initiated it. But the fact that cane sugar was not so valuable since beet sugar now competed with it made conditions worse, and a revolt in 1878 led to further decline. So the islands of the Danish West Indies, as the three were called, were a sad sight and, in the early 20th century when WW1 was underway, the United States took interest in us for our strategic location, particularly as the Panama Canal had just been completed, and Germany was threatening to take possession of us. At a price of $25 million in gold, the transfer of the islands, to be known as the United States Virgin Islands, took place on March 31, 1917. And, the rest is History, of a different kind.

CHRISTIANSTED WALKING TOUR Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of Christiansted at the site of the Old Scale House 1 on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service. Major construction of a new bulkhead for the Wharf is limiting access to this building that displays the scale used in former days to weigh barrels of rum and sugar.

Fort Christiansvaern 3 was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appearance reflects the 1830’s period.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions and ongoing construction, access to the Fort for the time being is limited but free of charge. It is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm which coincides with the hours of the adjacent Fort Parking Lot whose hours are strictly enforced. Brochures available at the Visitor Center. The Steeple Building 4 across Hospital Street, formerly the Lutheran Church, dates from 1753. This site, on the Walking Tour, is currently closed for renovation. Across Company Street lies the onetime Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse 5 , built in 1749 as a storage facility for hundreds of barrels of sugar and rum. In its courtyard, slave auctions were formerly held. Originally, Government House 6 on King Street, was built as a home for a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. Due to COVID-19 restrictions tours of the site have temporarily been suspended. The Lord God of Sabaoth Lutheran Church 7 across Queen Cross Street on King Street was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added. Across on Company Street is the historic Lutheran Parish Hall, and in the courtyard the former Pastor’s residence. Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall 8 on the left corner. Opened in 1828 by Danish pharmacist Peder Eggers Bentzon, the town’s first pharmacy remained here until 1970. Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market 9 , laid out in the original town plan from 1735 and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.

Christiansted National Historic Site Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park Saystem in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.” Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors. Your tour of Frederiksted begins at Fort Frederik 1 by the cruise ship pier and waterfront park. Construction on the Fort began in 1752 and was completed in 1760. Featuring a museum with several permanent exhibits, and an art gallery, it is open Monday – Friday, 8:30 am to 4 pm. Admission $5., children under 12 free. A public beach with showers and bathrooms is next to Fort Frederik. Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park 2 named for the renowned slave rebellion leader, a bust of whom is displayed there. The Oscar E. Henry Customs House 3 was built in the 1800s. The Freedom Fountain 4, facing the pier, was installed for the Emancipation’s 150th Anniversary Celebration. After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, parts of the town were rebuilt in Victorian style. Victoria House 5, on Strand Street, preserves 63Frederiksted architecture of that time. the The Visitor’s Bureau 6 is located upstairs on Strand Street above the Frederiksted Mall and next door to the historic light blue building housing the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts 7. Free admission to exhibits and gift shop. Frederiksted is home to several historic churches, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church 8, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church 9, Friedensberg Moravian Church 10, and St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church 11. The handsomely restored Arthur Abel Complex 12, formerly The Danish School (1799), is now the office of the Lieutenant Governor in Frederiksted at Hospital and Market Street. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library 13, built in 1803. Just behind it lies the Dorsch Theater 14, an open-air stage and event site. The Market Place 15, is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted.

SAVE WHIM MUSEUM by Michael Connors, Ph.D.

I

n the August/September issue, ST. CROIX THIS WEEK published my article “Why is St. Croix’s Whim Museum in Frederiksted Important and Why Should It Reopen?” (www.virginislandsthisweek.com/StCroix/Latest Issues) It was written because I’m a Lifetime Member and so deeply care about the future of St. Croix Landmarks Society and its premier treasure of properties, collections and archives. Specifically, it is my heartfelt concern and desire to be of assistance in reopening Whim Museum, the jewel in the crown of the U.S. Virgin Islands’ historically significant properties. During my fifteen years on the Board of Trustees (and Chairman of Collections) I consulted with Baker Furniture Company and designed a highly successful line of West Indian furniture that applied the techniques, styles, beauty and uniqueness of 18th and 19th century Crucian craftsmanship. All royalties from the furniture line, totaling well over a halfmillion dollars, were donated to St. Croix Landmarks Society’s endowment fund. In 1997, one of the Whim Museum Collection furniture designs received the American Furniture Award for Excellence and Creativity in American Design. The Whim Museum Collection is credited for having brought West Indian mahogany furniture forward globally as an independent collecting field. The ending sentence of ST. CROIX THIS WEEK’s previous article read, “Watch this space for a follow-up on the Whim Museum, its progress and how you can help.” Unfortunately, after much research and submitting numerous questions to St. Croix Landmarks Society’s Executive Director and Board of Trustees, there is little substantive information to report. One of the encouraging results however was the multitude of responses from residents and non-residents offering supportive suggestions, encouraging advice, and heartening personal recollections. Since publication of the last article, emails were sent with specific questions to Trustees and the Museum Executive Director, with copies sent to U.S.V.I. Governor Albert Bryan, Jr. The only responder (other than the Governor

stating his concern about the issue) was a current trustee whose responses are below, which I feel are appropriate to share so as to better understand the Board’s efforts and activities. His cooperation and below answers, in his words, are greatly appreciated. 1) (SCLS is) “working with FEMA and VITEMA to access the disaster funds” 2) (SCLS is) “hoping to start the process to develop scope of work to release an RFP (Requests for Proposal) in the coming weeks for the great house roof.” 3) “there are no items from any of the (SCLS’s) collections that are missing”.. and (SCLS’s) “furniture from the Greathouse is being stored on property.” 4) “The last annual meeting was in 2019” and “I do believe we will have an annual meeting this November.” 5) (SCLS’s) “library and archive had never been closed” and “We continue to process requests as they are received” These answers beg more questions. What is the current status of accessing disaster funds? Who is drafting the “scope of work” for RFPs? What is the status of issuing RFPs, and to whom are they being sent? And when (and how) will the November annual membership meeting be announced? Is the 25-year VI Government lease, set to expire in 2023, being renewed and has this been set in motion? While it is understandably more efficient to have one voice answering on behalf of the Board, the trustee further wrote that Landmark's Executive Director would be in touch to address the remaining unanswered questions. To date no responses have been received on the following: *Is there an updated list of current trustees with email addresses? *What is the condition of museum inventory and collections, and is an updated inventory of properties and collections available? *Is there a restoration plan for conservation of items in storage? *Has SCLS submitted 2019 IRS 990 form for period ending September 30, 2020? *What is the status of SCLS’s Endowment Fund?

Vintage Postcard, Whim Museum 1968

*Why have life-members not been sent notice or ballots for any annual meetings after 2016? *What is the status of RFPs being sent out to repair the greathouse roof? *Have any financial settlements been made and if so how have those funds been allocated? I have reached the limit of my ability to ask for further transparency from Landmark’s Trustees or Executive Director. I suggest a public forum be organized and convened with the goal of reopening Whim Museum’s properties and collections. We all love our museum. We know how important it is as an educational tool to the generations of students yet to visit and study its historical significance and genealogical records. I am passionate about the cultural history and patrimony of the Caribbean. Having published ten books on the subject, and having spent much of my adult life in the Caribbean, there is no place more important to me than St. Croix. It occurs to me that Whim Museum could apply for nomination to the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Most Endangered Historic Places list. The island’s unique cultural heritage is a treasure to its inhabitants and to the wider world. St. Croix Landmarks Society’s properties, collections, artifacts and assets are unrivaled and must be preserved. December 21 / Januar y 22 • 59

REAL ESTATE— NOW’S THE TIME! by Ava Gail Bourdon Broker-Owner, RE/MAX St. Croix

I

t’s always the right time for real estate in the US Virgin Islands! We have the brightest, sunniest days, the bluest skies, the friendliest people, the most beautiful Caribbean waters, and I can go on and on. St. Croix REAL ESTATE is very active and there are no signs it will be slowing down any time soon. Are you in the market to purchase your Caribbean dream home? As with any home purchase, you should always consider a few things: location, condition, what upgrades may be required, homeowner’s fees, taxes, and insurance. If you are a property owner and have been considering listing your property, now is the time to get a Comparative Market Analysis, or CMA. A CMA will give you an idea of your property value. The alterative to a CMA, is an appraisal from a V.I. licensed appraiser. Whether you intend to sell or not, it’s always a good thing to know the market value of your property. Here is how the current market is compared to the same time last year. (Source: FlexMLS Residential Stats from 9/30/20 to 9/30/21)

Sunrise and sunset times are based on the 15th of each month.

CONSTELLATIONS: UPPER CASE • Stars: Lower Case

DECEMBER Three bright planets dominate the western sky after sunset. The brightest and thus the first to appear is Venus which you will easily spot low in the West. Once it grows darker, the other two planets will become visible. Higher in the sky is the bright planet Jupiter. Not as bright as Venus, but still quite bright. Between Jupiter and Venus you will find Saturn. A fourth planet, the red planet Mars will rise in the east around 4:30 a.m. and quickly get lost in the brightness of dawn. The night of December 13 to 14th is the maximum of the Geminids Meteor Shower. The Geminids may produce up to 120 multicolored meteors per hour at its peak. Meteors are caused by pebble sized bits of rock burning up as they pass through the air some 50 miles above the Earth. Unfortunately, this year the light from the Moon will overpower many of the fainter meteors. The best time to look is between midnight and dawn. Just use your eyes to scan around the sky for shooting stars. December 21st is the December Solstice. The South Pole of the Earth will be tilted toward the Sun and thus the Sun will be in its southernmost position in the sky (directly over the Tropic of Capricorn) This is the first day of winter in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of summer in the Southern Hemisphere. It is possible that a newly discovered comet, Comet Leonard, will become visible low in the western sky in December. If it does, it will probably be very faint, but diligent observers may be able to spot it. Every year at this time people ask astronomers if they know what was the star of stars, the star which lead the Wise Men to Bethlehem at the time of the birth of Jesus? Long ago people thought of everything that they saw in the night sky as a “star”. Thus, the planets, the “fixed” stars, meteors, 64 • December 21 / Januar y 22

comets, etc. all were “stars”. So what might have been “The Star”? Meteors or shooting stars happen so quickly that if you see one, by the time you tell your friends to look, the flash will be gone. Certainly a meteor did not send the Wise Men to Bethlehem. Comets were well known, but were considered omens of bad tidings and thus a comet would not send the Wise Men in search of a great king. The fixed stars do not change from year to year, so they would not account for the search. From time to time a star may “explode” as a nova or supernova, and for a short time may even become visible in the daytime. But, our records show no “guest star” at the time of Christ’s birth. The Wise Men followed the motions of the planets as these “wandering stars” moved against the background of fixed stars, for they believed that the motions of these wandering stars could foretell the future. With their knowledge of the motions of the heavens they could calculate that Jupiter and Saturn would pass each other three times and then be joined by Mars. But, what of Herod and his advisors, why did they not see this “star”? Most of the event would not be visible because it would happen during the day. But, the Wise Men knew that it was happening. They knew that this event would take place in Pisces, the Fish, a star group which for them was symbolic of the Hebrews. Thus some great event would take place in the land of the Hebrews and the Wise Men were off on their search. Was this meeting of the planets really “The Star”? Astronomers do not know; the final decision is yours. JANUARY After the Sun set and the sky grows dark a bright star-like object will appear low in the western sky. This is not a star at all, but the planet Jupiter. If you are up early, Mars appearing as a red star-like object will rise in the east around 4:00 a.m.

before disappearing in the light of the coming sunrise. A January evening is a great time to sky watch since the early evening sky is filled with bright stars. High in the eastern sky are seven bright stars that form Orion, the Hunter. Two stars form his shoulders (bright red Betelgeuse and Bellatrix), two more his knees (Saiph and the very bright Rigel) and three his belt. According to legend Orion was such a mighty hunter that he boasted that he could defeat any animal on Earth in battle. Suddenly a scorpion appeared, stung Orion on the foot and Orion died. However, Orion was such a great hunter that he was given immortality and placed in the heavens. The scorpion was also placed in the night sky, but you never seen Orion and the scorpion at the same time. Orion is not alone in his celestial hunt. By Orion’s feet are his two hunting dogs. Canis Major the Big Dog is easy to find. Look for the brightest star in the night sky, Sirius, and you have found the Big Dog. North of Sirius and east of Orion is a somewhat fainter star, this is Procyon and Canis Minor, the Little Dog. Above Procyon in the Little Dog and Betelgeuse in Orion, look for two bright stars nearby each other and of about the same brightness. They almost look like twin stars, and in fact these two stars, Castor and Pollux, mark the heads of the Gemini Twins. To the west of Orion you will find the bright red-orange star Aldebaran, the right eye of Taurus, the Bull. The night of January 3rd to 4th is the peak of the Quadrantids Meteor Shower. Looking from a good dark location you may see up to 40 meteors per hour. The best time to look is between midnight and dawn. On January 4th the Earth will be at its closest to the Sun for the entire year. The distance from the Sun’s center to Earth’s center will be 147,105,052 km or 91,406,842 miles.
