Good Day and welcome to the United States Virgin Islands! Our people welcome you. We are a unique place to visit with a variety of islands: St. Croix, St. Thomas, St. John, Water Island and dozens of small cays and islets. Each island is unique. Each offers distinct and memorable experiences. St. Croix is our largest island and we invite you to discover our historic towns; Christiansted and Frederiksted and discover the quaint shops and Danish Architecture. St Croix has wide open spaces, magnificent vistas and a unique culture. St. John is almost all National Park and perfectly preserved. It has sparkling turquoise bays and long, lazy beaches. Enjoy the relaxing atmosphere. St Thomas is the shopping center of the Caribbean with duty free shopping and a vibrant nightlife. Charlotte Amalie is the capital city of the United States Virgin Islands with its huge natural harbor, bustling port and vistas that will take your breath away. Try our underwater delights, bask on a beach, soak up some sunshine, sail into sunset or hike the trails. You can see why we call this "America’s Paradise." As the new Governor of the United States Virgin Islands, I assure you that we will do everything possible to make your stay enjoyable. Our people are warm and friendly. We will welcome you in conversation. Don’t hesitate to ask people for directions or shopping tips. Our people are eager to help you enjoy your visit. I extend to you my warmest greetings and hope you enjoy your vacation in the United States Virgin Islands! Sincerely, Kenneth Mapp Governor

Summer Reading Now
The Caribbean Writer, Vol 29—
“Ambiquities and Contradictions in the Caribbean Space”
O
ut this August, the University of the Virgin Islands announces the release of Volume 29 in their anticipated series, The Caribbean Writer—Where the Caribbean Imagination Embraces the World. “Each poem, story, essay, and book review is a new emerging or established Caribbean voice in conversations generated by our 2015 theme, “Ambiguities and Contradictions in the Caribbean Space.” You will experience the effects of migration, the contradictions in race, class, gender relations, the ambiguities in nationality constructs, the power of religion, the nature of spirituality and the grip of the supernatural, the many permutations of love and relationships, and parenting amid the subtleties of childhood sensibilities—-all set in the context of our diversity. New possibilities and new meanings about our similar and different hopes for the future rise out of the fellowship evident in these conversations,” states a recent news release. The stunning cover art, entitled “Mysteries and Contradictions,” is the work of Antiguan artist, Edison Liburd. Volume 29 also features the works of Virgin Islands artists Elisa Mckay, Lucien Downes, Daryl Wooford and Madeline Meehan. Other artists include Jamaican artist Bernard Hoyes, Els Tjong Joe Wai from Surinam, and the works of Alison Wells and Darin Gibson from Trinidad. This volume of The Caribbean Writer is edited by Alscess LewisBrown, the author of several books for young people including, the Moko Jumbi Majorette series, Efa and the Mosquito and Footsteps to the Sunrise. She has served on the University’s Adjunct Faculty since 1990, teaching courses in writing and the humanities. “I am honored and delighted to edit this volume,” Lewis-Brown said, reflecting on the approximately 500 submissions that were reviewed in order to select the pieces for final publication. She thanked the Journal’s Editorial Board, UVI faculty members Patricia Harkins-Pierre, Vincent Cooper, Edgar O. Lake, local poet and novelist and UVI Professor, and David Gould, who participated actively in the paring down process and who contributed greatly to this keepsake publication. “We are pleased that this volume has drawn such an array of visual art and literature from across the Caribbean diaspora. Works have been submitted from countries in South America, up the Caribbean archipelago to the Bahamas, across the United States and as far away as Japan, Africa, Great Britain and Spain—literally everywhere the Caribbean experience is being lived or where Caribbean people and their descendants are living.” Brown added.
w w w.stcroix thisweek.com
The Volume features interviews with awarding winning Virgin Islands author, Tiphanie Yanique, and internationally renowned, Jamaica Kincaid. It also offers a special tribute to three award-winning, giant Caribbean writers who have given a lifetime of service to literature. Celebrating their 85th year are Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott and Edward Kamau Brathwaite, winner of the 2015 Frost Award. Earl Lovelace turned 80 on July 13. The works of these octogenarians continue to inspire writers within the region and its diaspora. Some writers you have seen before and some are new to this volume. Established writers include award-winning poet Kamau Brathwaite, Joanne C. Hillhouse, Tammi BrowneBannister, Breanne McIvor, Ernestia Fraser, Lelawattee Rahming, and Dwight Thompson. Writers from St. Croix are Bibi Donaie, Daisy Lafond, D’Yanirah Santiago and Lori Watts Hirons. Writers from St. Thomas are Susan Hunter, Ashley Ruth Bernier and Tamika Gibson. Writing out of Tortola is award-winning poet, Richard Georges. Book reviewers include David Gould, Susan Wanlass, Gabrielle DiLorenze, Linda Rodriguez Guelielmoni, Mary Jo Wilder, Cyril Dabydeen, Mary Jo Coaplen, Elaine Savory, Valerie Knowles Combie, Patricia Harkins-Pierre, and Vincent Cooper. “We are pleased to continue in the tradition of excellence which both the University and The Caribbean Writer represent with this new volume of the journal,” said UVI President David Hall. “It is this spirit of excellence that has ensured the success and vitality of the journal for so many years.” The Caribbean Writer • 340-692-4152 • www.caribbeanwriter.org orders@thecaribbeanwriter.org • abrown@live.uvi.edu

“Before moving to St. Croix,” says Shoreline at Chenay Bay owner Derek Shupe, “I was living in Missouri, going to college, and working at Lake of the Ozarks with a couple guys that came down to St.Croix during the winter months to balance the “high season” in both places. Nine years ago I came along, planning on staying for just one season, but fell in love with the welcoming community on St Croix. After seven years as GM at Ft. Christian Brew Pub in Christiansted, I took over the restaurant at Chenay Bay Beach Resort renaming it Shoreline. Time to branch out on my own, work for myself and ‘do my own thing.’ The view of Green Cay was beautiful plus the shore was perfect for my floating stage with live music right on the water. I, with help from friends, rebuilt the deck with an oceanview bar and walk-up seats from the beach. Head Chef, Scott Rogers, has 20 years of experience, creating clean, ingredient-driven dishes with an intimate understanding of eclectic Latin/Caribbean cuisine. Scott’s themed menu goes from Jamacian Jerk Chicken to the favorite—fish tacos. Look for Passion in Paradise and St. Germain Cocktail, two of our refreshing specialty drinks. In May, we hosted both the Travel Channel and HGTV for filming on the property. What a great opportunity to show both networks what St Croix has to offer! Both filming sessions went well and both channels were very pleased with the results.” Shoreline is open 7 days a week, 11 am – 9 pm, for lunch and dinner; dine in or take out. Happy hour, 4-6 pm Monday through Friday; live music every Sunday, 3 – 6 pm. Shoreline @ Chenay Bay Beach Resort 340-643-3400 • www.shorelinestx.com Facebook

REGISTER NOW FOR STARVING ARTIST DAY, NOV 28, AT WHIM MUSEUM!
Meet Cover Artist Marcia Jameson
Marcia Jameson.
Henry O. Tanner’s The Banjo Lesson holds a special place in my heart, as does almost anything painted by Paul Gauguin. Even though my work leans toward realistic impressionism, I’m trying to find the courage to “step outside of the box” and try something new.
“I’ve always been captivated by color. When I was four years old, my mother took me and my two sisters to Barbados to meet our grandmother. The sight of trees completely covered with blazing red blossoms and a turquoise ocean with multi-colored fish swimming around us
I was privileged to participate in the exhibit 1270 Women at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York, also Two Women at the Selma Burke Cultural Center in Pittsburg, Pa. and Black Women of Dimension, which I also curated, at The Storefront Museum in Queens, New York. Even though the art market in New York was thriving, I felt a need to be in a more colorful and nurturing environment.
At the water’s edge.
beginning of my career as a freelance artist at the age of eighteen. I was walking in the light. The boatmen.
filled me with unbelievable awe. Seventy-nine years later, seeing the same brilliant red flamboyant trees surrounding my home in St. Croix and the cerulean sea just takes my breath away,” says artist Marcia Jameson. “Our family moved from Harlem to an Italian neighborhood in the northeast Bronx when I was about six years old. That is where my creative journey began and where I became the person I am today. With five children in the family, we had a lively household. As a child, I would draw and paint on anything I could get my hands on like cardboard boxes, brown paper bags, and window shades, using small cans of oil enamel house paints from the hardware store. I knew nothing about artist oil paints and pigments. My thirst for the arts, from fine art to music, dance, theatre, film and writing, has always driven me to try new things, at least once. After high school I worked at a doll factory in Manhattan during the day then travelled uptown to my evening art classes at City College. An artist named Al Hollingsworth also attended City College. When he saw my sketches he offered me freelance work inking his drawings for comic books and doing spot illustrations for an assortment of publications at his studio. That was the
I continued freelancing after I got married and had two children. Wanting to enhance my knowledge of commercial art, I attended evening classes at The Fashion Institute of Technology and School of Visual Arts in Manhattan, studying commercial art. I used drafting tools and colored gels to create very precise Graphics for slide presentations and logos, decades before computer graphics. In the late 1960s, two friends in advertising invited me to join them in creating the Jones, James and Jameson Advertising Agency to accommodate the growing market for products for people of color. That really broadened my horizons. Even though our venture was shortlived, it was a once-in-a-life time experience.
I re-located to St. Croix in 1978, and was pleased to find a very active artist community on the island. I worked a full-time job and also freelanced, creating logos for the Energy Office, the Women’s Coalition and Camp Arawak. My art appeared on two covers of The Caribbean Writer literary journal and I’ve illustrated several children’s books. It was quite an honor to have my ‘Retrospective’ at the historic Fort Frederik Museum. The ambiance of the Island’s incredible past and pain surrounded me and it felt right. I was the featured artist at the eleventh annual ‘Caribbean Fine Art Exhibit’ at The Good Hope School, and proud to have been one of the artists chosen to represent the Virgin Islands in the exhibit Africa in The Heart of The Virgin Islands at the Matte Reed African Heritage Center in Greensboro, North Carolina. There is no greater compliment to an artist than to touch someone’s spirit with their creation.

Now that we are officially in hurricane season, weather preparedness is on everyone’s mind. As tropical storms and hurricanes begin to brew over the Atlantic Ocean, all the residents of the Virgin Islands hope for the best, but try to prepare for the worst. Although we want every hurricane season to be mild and uneventful, there is no accounting for the weather. Having said that, how do you deal with unpredictable weather on your wedding day? I have never yet met anyone who wanted it to rain! In fact, for many couples the “R” word gets demoted to 4-letter word status during the wedding planning process. So, if you are planning your wedding in a beautiful, tropical destination such as St. Croix, know that the chance for rain is a definite possibility. Unlike the mainland, weather systems usually pass over us rather quickly. One minute it’s raining and 5 minutes later the sky is clear again. Yet there are times when the wind dies down and a system of rain rolls in and sits right on top of the island…for hours refusing to vacate. Although we, in the wedding industry, wish we could control the weather for the sake of the client’s experience, our equipment, and to avoid being wet and uncomfortable for hours, none of us possess such a power. However, there are things we can control such as a well-thought-out and executed ‘Plan B.’ When rain invades, the top priority is to keep the client and the guests dry. Additionally, the side goal is to make the change in plans beautiful and smooth for everyone involved. Many of the well-established hotels and wedding planners here on island have weather contingency planning down to a science. Within this plan will be alternate dry yet visually appealing locations, vendor management procedures, transportation details and many other vital components. It’s important that you have a weather contingency plan in place so, if the weather goes rogue, you know exactly what needs to be done if it rains on your special day and a change of plans is necessary. Our Danish Connection
A Trace of Denmark in the Official Seal of the US Virgin Islands — by Nina York

isitors to the handsome, historic Government House in Christiansted are given a glimpse at the entrance screening area of the official Seal of the United States Virgin Islands. This image encompasses multiple elements of our identity, more so than the Virgin Islands flag, which is a close replica of the United States military image of the American Eagle holding in one of its talons an olive branch, and three arrows in the other, a portrayal symbolizing the national balance between peace and defense. It does not hold any local elements other than the initials V and I, standing for the Virgin Islands.
attraction. St. Croix carries the image of a sugar mill, of which this island still retains a large number of ruins. In the center of the Great Seal we view our National Bird, the yellow-breasted bananaquit, to most of us known as the sugarbird. It seems so appropriate that this sweet little sparrow-like critter is very fond of the commodity that in former days brought great wealth to this island, sugar produced from the cane fields that occupied two thirds of St. Croix. Today, many residents hang bowls of sugar outside their home to attract them. The bird is perched on a twig of our Na-

In addition to showing maps of the three main islands of St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix (albeit not to scale, for practical reasons) each island is marked with little icons that reflect the islands’ past – St. Thomas with the Legislature building, the former military barracks in Danish times, alongside a little Dannebrog, as the Danish flag is called, to indicate that island being the seat of government since 1871. St. John offers a portrayal of the Anneberg ruins, in Danish days a sugar Plantation, today a major tourist .com wwww.stcroix w w.stcroix thisweek thisweek.com
of Tecoma stans. This shrub is found growing wild throughout the islands and bring a lovely yellow splash to so many areas of our tropical scenery.
So, in summary, our pride in our nature and history combine in the Great Seal to tell the story to our visitors about us. In addition, it conveys a rare quality found in our people, the recognition and fondness expressed towards Denmark, a former colonial ruler, also demonstrated by the display of the Danish flag at official buildings such as Government House. Watersports & Activities CSA—THE LARGEST VARIETY OF VESSELS AVAILABLE FOR CHARTER!
Explore Buck Island with Caribbean Sea Adventures! “My family moved from New York in the late 60s and we started Caribbean Sea Adventures in 1984,” says owner Miles Sperber. “Located on the Christiansted boardwalk, we are a familyoriented water sports company with the largest variety of vessels available for charter—from private charters for 2 people to groups of over 100! With over 30 years of experience, safety is always our first concern. We understand that people have a choice so we work hard to make you feel like part of our family. Once you experience Buck Island Reef National Monument, you will understand why it is St Croix’s number one attraction! The most satisfying part of my job is teaching snorkeling to beginners—it really opens up a whole new world for them. With the expansion of the monument, we are experiencing a huge
cruise. Enjoy a relaxing sail aboard this fantastic 63-foot, custom-built classic yacht, then explore a beach, chill, and swim—and do what we do best in St Croix, “nothing!” After this romantic day, we sail you back to Christiansted. 23rd Annual St Croix International Regatta
SEPTEMBER 2015
www.stcroixthisweek.com
ST. CROIX THIS WEEK
Guiding Visitors & Locals for 44 Years
The 23rd St Croix International Regatta will be held November 13th, 14th and 15th at the St Croix Yacht Club. Co-chairs, Karen Stanton and Julie San Martin have made some changes this year. Friday’s race, formerly known as the Commodore’s Race, has been changed to the Captain Nick’s Race, honoring the founder of this regatta. Nick Castruccio, a die-hard racer and the honoree at the 20th Nick Castruccio. Anniversary in November, Susan Wall 2012, had a dream to host a big boat regatta in the Buck Island Channel and invited boats from all over the Caribbean to come race in St Croix 23 years ago. The regatta is still going and one that many sailors look forward to. The inspiration of one St. Croix sailor, Nick had the foresight to get this regatta off the ground. With the help of fellow sailor and businessman, Rob Armstrong, they secured Mumm’s Champagne as the first sponsor. The first Mumm’s Cup Regatta in October 1992 was a three-day event with 69 boats competing. Peter Holmberg of Team Heineken was the overall winner and received his weight in Mumm’s Champagne. A Tradition was born! Captain Nick has raced in most every St Croix Yacht Club annual regatta since its inception in 1992. For the first two years, he helped run Race Committee and made sure things ran smoothly. Castruccio stated, “my most memorable moment came during that first regatta in 1992. When I saw over 50 spinnakers coming downwind, I said to one of my committee members, look what we started.” At 86, this tough sailor
www.StCroixThisWeek.com Nick on blue Annick with Spinnaker out.
was still going strong and planed to race his beloved 32-year-old J30, Annick, in November. When asked how he was preparing for the upcoming regatta, Nick said, “I plan to have Annick hauled and get that bottom cleaned!” Youth sailing has always been Nick’s focus and many young sailors at the St. Croix Yacht Club have benefited greatly from his sailing knowledge. Annick, named for Nick’s late wife, Ann (Ann Nick – get it!), has always been raced by a crew of young sailors, often their first big boat racing experience. For the past decade, Nick’s passion has been the Frederiksted Community Boating Program (FCB), a nonprofit sailing program located on the west end of St Croix which teaches local kids to sail. Another change is— Optimist Racing is back! A large group of young sailors will be racing their Optis right off the beach at the St Croix Yacht Club, turning out as many as 12 to 15 races in a two-day period in Teague Bay. These USVI and BVI youngsters are currently some of the best Optimist sailors in North America. In addition to the “usual suspects” from St Croix and St Thomas, the BVI is always well represented in the big boat class. There will be two well-established, one design classes – Rhodes 19 and Melges 32. Sailing will take place in Buck Island channel, with possible courses taking them as far west as Salt River or around the East End, weather permitting. Nightly entertainment will be provided for the sailors along with our great Cruzan hospitality and local food.
Rider Odom racing Optimist.

this spectacular beach is part of Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge and is one the longest in the Caribbean! St. Croix
ARRIVAL. US citizens don’t need a passport; departing visitors need a photo ID. LOCATION. St. Croix lies 18 north latitude and 65 west longitude, about 700 miles from the equator. The Virgin Islands are part of the Antilles chain from the Bahamas down to Trinidad. St. Croix is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea. VIRGIN ISLANDERS. Virgin Islanders are a reserved but friendly people. “Good Morning,” “Good Afternoon,” and “Good Night” are welcome Crucian greetings. Everyone speaks English or a lilting version of it. CLIMATE. Year-round temperatures range in the 80s during the day, 70s most nights, with summer somewhat warmer. Easterly trade winds keep the humidity down. Most island showers are over in minutes. Residents collect rainwater from rooftops into household cisterns. Saltwater distillation plants help the supply. With water scarce, it is used sparingly. TIME. We are on Atlantic Standard in the winter, one hour ahead of Eastern Standard. During the summer, we are the same time as Eastern Daylight Savings. WHAT TO WEAR. Island dress is casual but bathing suits and men without shirts in town or grocery stores is frowned upon. Men don’t need ties or jackets; hats are great sun protectors for everyone. No adaptors needed for personal plug-ins. WE ARE HERE TO HELP YOU. The Christiansted Visitors Bureau is located in Government House on Queen Cross Street; open weekdays. The Frederiksted Visitor’s Bureau is located in a Strand Street courtyard near the Pier; open week-
days & cruise-ship days. A Christiansted National Historic Site Visitor’s Orientation Center is located at Scale House on King Street at the Wharf. The seasoned traveler doesn’t take chances. Lock your car, don’t wear valuable jewelry wandering in town, keep to the main areas. CURRENCY & BANKING. We use the US dollar and credit cards are accepted everywhere. First Bank (all branches), M – Th, 8:30 am – 4 pm, F, 8:30 am – 5 pm, Sat, 9 am – 1 pm (SI and Fsted); Banco Popular Sunny Isle, M – F, 8:30 am – 4 pm, Sat, 9 am – 1 pm, Banco Popular Orange Grove, M – F, 8 am – 4 pm; Scotia Bank Sunny Isle, M – W, 8:30 – 3:30, Th – F, 8:30 am – 5:30 pm. See maps for bank and ATM locations. TAXES. No sales tax but a 10% government tax is applied to hotel rooms. COMMUNICATIONS. St. Croix has several radio stations and three television stations; Cable TV carries the national news stations. Two newspapers are published daily; also an online daily. New York and Miami papers arrive each morning. TELEPHONE SERVICE. The local area code is 340 but you need not dial it for local numbers. Phone cards are sold at many shops throughout the island. We have local Sprint and ATT stores plus Radio Shack for any forgotten cell phone accessories. POSTAL RATES. As part of the US postal system, 1st class mail is .49 cents for the first ounce, postcards are .35 cents, international rates are $1.20 for cards and letters. See maps for post office locations. MARINE LIFE. All native plants, animals, fish (unless harvested for food), coral and shells are protected under the Indigenous Species Act. You will not be permitted to leave the territory with any plants or marine life in your possession. HOLIDAYS. We celebrate US Federal holidays and local ones as well. The government closes for all holidays, banks close for most. Shops stay open except on major holidays. EMERGENCY NUMBERS. Police, Fire, Ambulance ................ Christiansted Harbor.
Always Remember To Drive Left! Whether renting a car or crossing the street, it is vital to remember that traffic in the USVI flows from the left side of the road. St. Croix is 28 miles in length and 7 miles at the widest point with two major towns—Christiansted at the center on the north shore and Frederiksted at the west end. The Caribbean Sea which surrounds the island is always there to guide you along the roads that wind around the coast. Car rental agencies have a variety of vehicles available from sporty jeeps to roomy air-conditioned sedans, vans, and SUVs. The average price usually includes unlimited mileage but you fill the tank upon return! Both US and other driver’s licenses are recognized. The driver and front seat passenger are required by law to use seat belts and cell phone talking or texting is not allowed. Parking in Christiansted is limited and 2-hour parking on parts of Company and Queen Cross Streets is enforced. Look for the signs. There is daytime parking in the National Park Service lot near Fort Christiansvaern and a large public lot with fees just west of town on Strand and King Cross Streets. Major roads are asphalt and usually well maintained. The Melvin H. Evans Highway is the only 4-lane, divided highway running from mid-island west to within 1 mile of Frederiksted. The speed limit is 55. In other areas, the 35 mph limit applies; in town, 20 mph unless otherwise posted. Let our Attractions & Tours pages (34 & 35) and our St. Croix Road Map (54 & 55) and town maps (56-58) help you plan your island tour!

Rejsemål St. Croix PRAKTISKE OPLYSNINGER OM US VIRGIN ISLANDS

Island Worship The history of our island is mirrored in its old church structures, many of which have recently been restored. The Moravian brethren, arriving here in the 1730s from Saxony in today’s Germany, founded their mission to bring Christianity to the enslaved part of the population. The historic Anglican (Episcopalian) churches built in Gothic style include St. John’s in Christiansted and, in Frederiksted, the beautifully restored St. Paul’s church. The large number of Irish settlers, along with Englishmen and Hispanics, have contributed to the presence of the Catholic church; Holy Cross in Christiansted is the oldest in the Virgin Islands. The Danish rule of the island from 1733 to 1917 brought the Lutheran church, which still plays a large role here. Lord God of Sabaoth in Christiansted occupies the former Dutch Reformed Church; Holy Trinity in Frederiksted was built shortly after the town was founded. The Dutch Reformed church (Presbyterian) now has a new mid-island home. These are just a few of the many (over 150) churches on St. Croix, from SeventhDay Adventist to Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, and many more. Church attendance and activities are important to a large part of our population; visitors are always welcome at services, often a high point in their island experience. Many other faiths offer places of worship—a Jewish synagogue, a Hindu temple, and a Moslem mosque, to name a few. An easy-to-follow guide is actually the yellow pages of our local phone book beginning on Page 63. w w w.stcroix thisweek.com
Befolk-ningen. Virgin Islands befolkning er venlig men tilbageholdende. Man hilser gerne med “Good morning”, “Good Afternoon” og “Good Night.” Tider. Her som alle vegne, vær forsigtig. Kontaktnumre i Nødstilfælde. Telefon. Se by- og økortene for at finde postkontorerne. Helligdage. Her fejrer man amerikanske helligdage foruden en hel del lokale. Rust - op – Twist -- Named after the plantation on shore. This area has the deepest water close to shore in the USA! Lots of nice coral, tons of Black Durgans. Remains of upwelling pipes from a shrimp farm that Texas AM had in the 1970’s. 10. The Pennicle — This is a small sea mount that starts in 90 feet of water. Many times Reef Sharks are seen here as well as larger fish such as Grouper and Snapper.

This National Park Commemorates Our Danish Heritage (1733-1917).
CHRISTIANSTED WALKING TOUR
Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of CHRISTIANSTED at the site of the Old Scale House 1 on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. One section of the 1856 structure displays the scale used in former days to weigh barrel of rum and sugar. The other section holds a bookstore and gift shop as well as an information center about all things St. Croix. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service.

Fort Christiansvaern 3 was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appearance reflects the 1830’s period.

Furnishings from that era are on display; also an exhibit on local military history. At the entrance admission tickets to the Fort and Steeple Building are sold ($3) and brochures available. Open Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm, weekends 9 am to 5 pm. 2 hour parking available on site. The Steeple Building 4 across Hospital Street, formerly the Lutheran Church and dates from 1753. It houses a display documenting aspects of the religious history of St. Croix. Ask for opening hours at the Fort. Across Company Street lies the onetime Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse 5 , built in 1749. In its courtyard, slave auctions were formerly held.

Government House 6 on King Street was in part the former home of a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. The former are open to the public (entrance at mid-building on King Street). The Virgin Islands Tourism office (open weekdays only) is downstairs fronting the Lutheran Church. The Lutheran Church 7 across Queen Cross Street on King Street, was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added. Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall 8 on the left corner, which holds both the tiny Apothecary Museum on Queen Cross Street, open anytime, and in the courtyard the Archaeological Museum, open only Saturdays 10 am-2 pm. Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market 9 , laid out in the original town plan from 1735, and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.
Christiansted National Historic Site Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park Saystem in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.” Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors. Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park 2. The park contains a bronze bust of the renowned slave rebellion leader. The Oscar E. Henry Customs House 3 was built in the 1800s. The building is undergoing renovations. The Freedom Fountain 4, facing the pier, was installed for the Emancipation 150th Anniversary Celebration. 63 After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, the town was rebuilt in Victorian style. Victoria House 5, on Strand Street, and Apothecary Hall 6, on King Cross Street between King and Queen Streets, preserve the Frederksted architecture of that time. The Visitor’s Bureau 7, is located upstairs on Strand Street above the Frederiksted Mall and next door to the historic light blue building housing the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts 8. Frederiksted is home to a number of historic churches, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church 9, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church 10, Friedensberg Moravian Church 11, and St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church 12. The newly restored Old Danish School 13, on Hospital Street and Market Street, is a handsome building. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library 14, built in 1803. The Market Place 15, is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted.

St. Croix’s National Parks
BUCK ISLAND REEF NATIONAL MONUMENT Artifacts – Inhabitants - Shipwrecks Joshua M. Torres, PhD—National Park Service, Cultural Resource Program Manager Part 6 in a series Buck Island Reef National Monument, located off the northeast coast of St. Croix (Figures 1), was established Presidential Proclamation (No. 3443), in December 1961. The Monument’s purpose is to protect the island and the adjoining shoals, rocks, and undersea coral reef formations that compose one of the finest marine gardens in the Caribbean Sea, as well as the Figure 1. rare marine life that inhabit these waters. In addition to its natural wealth, Buck Island has been the scene of much cultural activity over the centuries, playing an integral role in the history of St. Croix.
In 1773, control of the island was transferred to Nicolay Salamon. In 1774, Joseph Coakley was listed as managing the island for Salamon, with his wife and two slaves. Coakley remained the tenant until 1780, when John Heyliger Abrahamson was listed. Abrahamson was the caretaker and taxpayer of the island from 1780 to 1797. In 1789, the Danish government constructed a signal station on the islands highest ridge. The signal keeper and his family would have lived nearby, along with their slaves. In 1797, John Benners took the position, and in 1802 John de Graff Godette was listed at the island. By 1804, however, Abrahamson was back and stayed until 1818, and again from 1823 to 1826.
to assume Love’s responsibilities. Leases were granted for grazing goats on Buck Island until the 1920s, and it was not until the 1940s before all remaining feral goats were removed. Because Buck Island is surrounded by coral reefs, and the reef’s proximity to Christiansted harbor, a number of ships have wrecked here. Two of these were British slaving vessels, the Mary (1797) and the General Abercrombie (1803). In both cases, the people and cargo were saved and many other items were salvaged and later sold at auction. In 1948, the Government of the Virgin Islands established Buck Island and its surrounding reefs as a territorial park. On December 5, 1961, con-
Buck Island was first occupied by pre-Columbian peoples associated with the Ostionoid and Taino era (ca. AD 600 – AD 1400). Archaeological evidence from the island, in the form of pre-Columbian pottery and radiocarbon dates from a buried campfire hearth, indicate that the island was inhabited by at least AD 600 (Figure 2). Due to the lack of freshwater on the Island it is unlikely that the island was permanently in habited. Rather, during this time Buck Island was likely used as a seasonal fishing campsite. Since at least 1754, enslaved Africans were sent to Buck Island to harvest lignurnvitae trees, a very strong wood used in ship and building construction. A few colonists lived on the higher ridges of the island, to maintain the Royal Signal Station. Ships destined for or leaving Christiansted harbor had to navigate around Buck Island’s coral reefs, and occasionally wrecked on them. Johann Deidrich, the town clerk for Christiansted, became one of the island’s first stewards from 1754 to 1773. Deidrich built a house atop the island which provided an unparalled view of the shipping lanes. Deidrich, a man of social and political stature, probably never lived on the island, but several of his slaves did. It is known that between 6 and 12 enslaved Africans were on the island during Deidrich’s tenure. They probably harvested lignum vitae trees, land-crabs, and lobsters, and survived on the island by fishing, gathering shellfish, planting sweet potatoes, and catching rainwater in above-ground cisterns. w.stcroix thisweek.com ww ww w.stcroix thisweek.com

In 1822, Buck Island became the official possession of the Danish Crown through the practice of landskassen (land treasury). The island was leased to various individuals for various uses--as determined appropriate by the Danish government. Census data through the nineteenth century note that small groups living on Buck Island. For example, in 1841, six people were living on the island: two fishermen, a housekeeper, and “three professional drunks”. Christopher Love was a fisherman from Copenhagen, and the other residents were from St. Croix. The other fisherman was Christian Petersen; the housekeeper was Peggy Conrad, and the three drunkards were Robert Sylvester, and John and Jacobine. Christopher Love owned two slaves: John, a fisherman, and Lucy, a cook. Love died by 1844, and Niehls Boun petitioned

trol of Buck Island and adjacent submerged lands and waters were transferred to the National Park Service, for the purpose of becoming a National Monument. On January 17, 2001, President William J. Clinton, expanded the Monument’s size by 18,135 acres. This proclamation established the entirety of Buck Island’s submerged lands as a “no-take” zone, as well as prohibiting boat anchoring except by permit only. Under the protection of the National Park Service, Buck Island’s beauty can be enjoyed by all who come to visit her.

Why We Live Here by Amy Land-de Wilde
The other day during our regular Tuesday morning office meeting, one of our brokers suggested we all share what we love about living on St. Croix. We’re asked this all the time by people thinking about making our beautiful island more permanent. It was a lively hour with lots of memories flying. Most of us have moved from the States, so we definitely have known other geographies and lifestyles. We all decided to settle here after our initial visits, buy our nests and make St. Croix our home! After over thirty-five years on our beautiful island, there’s still not a day that goes by where I don’t pull off the road at some point during the day to appreciate what my daughter, when she was young and often in the car with me, called my “beauty moments”. All of us agreed how rejuvenated we feel when we return to our island and can get back outside into the clean, fresh air. At night we can see a sky full of stars, and a friend turned me on to how and when to see the International Space Station fly overhead in its long arc. That never gets old. What so many agreed was that it’s the sense of community we all really cherish. I’ve heard people say over and over who’ve had to move off island for one reason or another, that they miss our community the most. They say that the bonds of their friendships are stronger, and even when people are called away, so many move back! Everyone says how quickly they made connections and became involved on our island. It’s not cliquish here and newcomers are accepted very quickly.
want to know what it’s like to live here. If that’s been on your mind, too, we’d love to share our stories with you and give you compelling reasons to become Crucians like we are.

Parents recalled how their nuclear family was enlarged by the “village”. Kids are “adopted” by their friends’ families and we all watch out for each other. It’s like a small town that constantly changes with the influx of interesting new folks from all over the globe. In fact, that’s one of the best things parents have said about raising kids here—it’s so multi-cultural. It really prepared them for leaving their nests! My daughter just graduated from University of Miami with a B.S. and great grades. She was well-prepared from her education here. We get calls and visits every day from those who are investigating St. Croix and w w w.stcroix thisweek.com

Sunrise and sunset times are based on the 15th of each month. How far away is the closest star from the Earth and what is the star’s name? If you know the name you probably have a good idea of the distance. Our star the Sun is closest and it is now about 91 million miles away. Okay, it was a trick question, most people do not think of the Sun as a star. But, you thought the Sun was 93 million miles away. The Earth is closest to the Sun in July (about 91 million miles) and farthest away in January. Obviously the Earth’s distance from the Sun does not cause the seasons. In fact, when it is Summer in the northern hemisphere it is Winter in the Southern. Once the Sun set, the night sky over the Virgin Islands reveals stars, planets, and even shooting stars. Early in July, two bright planets will dominate the western sky just after sunset. The brighter of the two is Venus and the just slightly fainter one is Jupiter. They are found just to the west of the bright star Regulus, but Regulus does not appear that bright when compared to these two planets. Wait a bit for the sky to grow darker and look to the southwest for another planet – Saturn. Saturn is also bright, but seems faint when compared to Venus and Jupiter. Of course, Venus is the third brightest object in the sky after the Sun and the Moon. The dark clear skies of the Virgin Islands make the islands a great place to see

these “shooting stars”. Shooting stars are more correctly called meteors. About fifty miles above the Earth, walnut size pieces of dust and ice are passing through the air so quickly that they burn up and you see a flash of light, a shooting star. The flash happens so quickly that if you say to a friend “look over there”, by the time they look the flash will be gone. When the Earth passes through a cloud of dust left behind by a comet, we see a meteor shower. There are three meteor showers during these months. The Delta Aquarids occur on the night of July 28-29, but the nearly full Moon will overpower all but the brightest meteors. The night of August 12-13 will be the peak of the Perseid meteor shower. From a clear dark location you might see 60 or more meteors per hour. October 21-22 brings the Orionids, an average meteor shower with about 20 shooting stars per hour. The best time to look for these meteors is between midnight and dawn. If you are up before dawn in late October, look to the eastern sky for three planets fairly close together: Jupiter and Venus which were visible in the evening sky in early Summer are now in the pre-dawn sky and are joined by the red planet Mars. As the Moon goes around the Earth, sometimes it passes through the Earth’s shadow. On September 27th this will occur

and there will be a total eclipse of the Moon visible from the islands. Lunar eclipses are very slow events, so you don’t have to stay outdoors and watch the whole time. The eclipse will begin at 8:10 pm when the Moon enters the lighter part of the Earth’s showdown. To the casual observer this is barely noticeable. The Moon enters the darker part of the Earth’s shadow at 9:06 and after that you will be able to see the Earth’s curved shadow on the Moon. The Moon is completely in the shadow, totality, at 10:10, the middle of the eclipse is at 10:47, totality ends at 11:23, and the eclipse ends at 1:24 am. You should be able to easily spot three bright stars which form a large triangle. Since the triangle is visible all night long during the Summer up north, it is called the Summer Triangle. Each bright star marks a different star group or constellation. Farthest West and lowest in the sky is Vega, part of Lyra the Harp. To the South is Altair, in Aquila the Eagle. The third bright star is Deneb, marking the tail of Cygnus, the Swan. Perhaps you can see other stars which form the Swan’s body, neck and head and its wings which spread wide. Cygnus is flying South along the Milky Way. The Milky Way looks like a hazy band of light arcing across the sky. It is the light from billions and billions of stars so far away, that all we see is their light combined into this haze.
