Tel: (340) 772-1000 Fax: (340) 772-0333 Welcome to our beautiful Virgin Islands of the United States. Our islands are unique in what they each offer and our communities are filled with people who are proud of our storied history. While visiting, I encourage you to immerse yourself in our culture and to explore the unique offerings of all four Islands that make up our paradise.

St. Croix, the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, sits to the south of our small island chain and is renowned for its pastoral landscapes, Danish architecture and historical landmarks. With its offshore wrecks and unbelievably beautiful underwater reefs, St. Croix is also a popular destination for diving enthusiasts. Be sure to visit the historic towns of Frederiksted and Christiansted and indulge in St. Croix’s renowned art and delicious culinary scenes. St. John is one of the smaller U.S. Virgin Islands and conservation center of the territory. It is best known for its pristine beaches and the attractions within the Virgin Islands National Park, which occupies more than half the island. The lands in the Virgin Islands National Park shelter migrant birds and the mangroves support corals and anemones. As with all the Virgin islands, you will find that St. John provides a rich mix of our culture and history. St. Thomas is our business and shopping center and the seat of government. Charlotte Amalie is the capital town of the U.S. Virgin Islands and is one of the busiest ports of call for cruise ships in the Caribbean. St. Thomas is among the most popular destinations in the Caribbean for sailing and yachting enthusiasts. Water Island is the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands and rests just off the coast of St. Thomas. It is mostly residential but offers fun attractions like Honeymoon Beach and quaint accommodations. The island can be reached by ferry from the Crown Bay Marina or by other vessels. As the Lieutenant Governor and Governor, both Treganza Roach and I wish you a warm, fun-filled stay and please accept our invitation to return often to our paradise. Albert Bryan, Jr. Governor

Food & Drink CE LE B RAT IONS In February, we celebrated the 49th Annual Agricultural and Food Fair where farmers showed us what could be grown to perfection on this island. In April we kick it up a notch and celebrate Food & Drink on a whole new level. A myriad of Farm to Table offerings, along with local and guest chefs, pair with our best distilleries’ spirits for days of sharing and celebrating!

Dear Visitor,

20th Annual

TASTE OF ST. CROIX

Welcome to St. Croix, a land of spectacular beauty, rich cultural diversity and intriguing history. The largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, with 84 square miles of rolling hillsides, pristine beaches and a tropical rainforest, St. Croix offers endless opportunities to pursue your heart’s desire and create a unique vacation experience.

April 2, 6pm Downtown Christiansted

One night, dozens of local chefs, celebrity chefs, restaurants, and farms, come together with international wines, and local rum, beer, and vodka distilleries to promote the tastes and flavors of St. Croix.

Kelly Greer

Adventurers and nature lovers can spend time hiking, kayaking, horseback riding, sailing or golfing at one of our championship golf courses. Scuba diving enthusiasts can experience five different dives in one day. For a more relaxed approach, swim in the crystalline waters of Buck Island, the only naturally occurring underwater National Monument in the U.S.

St. Croix Food & Wine Experience

History buffs can experience St. Croix’s vibrant history through its architecture, historic landmarks, food, music and traditions. Explore the magnificent Estate Whim Museum, a restored 18th century greathouse and sugar plantation, Forts Christiansvaern and Frederik or tour the lush gardens of the St. George Village Botanical Garden. Early risers can catch a picturesque sunrise at Point Udall, the easternmost point in the United States.

On behalf of the Department of Tourism, I hope you have an amazing vacation experience in St. Croix. Thank you for choosing the U.S. Virgin Islands. Sincerely,

Joseph Boschulte Commissioner USVI Department of Tourism

Critically Acclaimed New Spiritual Fiction Vividly Details an Atheist Woman’s Transformative Encounters at an Ordinary Garage Sale, Challenging Her Beliefs about God and the Afterlife. What if God showed up at your garage sale to teach you about life and prove His existence? Dr. Dr. Foderaro explores this very scenario in her new spiritual fiction, the story of how spiritually transformative encounters challenged an atheist woman’s long-held beliefs against the existence of God and life after death. Janet finds her comfortable Midwestern suburban life uprooted by financial troubles and as a result, she must now hold a garage sale. Throughout the weekend, she experiences one divine encounter after another: she notices numerous signs that connect to major events in her own life and receives messages from loved ones who’ve passed on. “Listening to hundreds of everyday people’s accounts involving spirituality and life after death inspired me to write the book,” Foderaro says. “So many people in the world have been transformed with an overwhelming sense of peace and love after experiencing these very commonlyreported miracles. I want my readers to know that if they’ve experienced similar encounters, it may not be coincidence!” James Redfield, bestselling author of “The Celestine Prophecy” book series says,“An outstanding and inspirational triumph… Foderaro thoughtfully guides the reader on an insightful journey towards spiritual awareness and meaningful self-actualization.” There’s a book signing at Undercover Books & Gifts in Gallows Bay on Thursday, April 23, at 10/28/09 2:41:24 PM 4:30 pm. Also find this book at the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts, The Fred Hotel, Blue Water Terrace, and the Botanical Garden of the VI. Dr. Marni Hill Foderaro is an award-winning educator and celebrated author. She earned her doctorate in education and completed postdoctoral studies at Harvard after a successful and rewarding 35-year career as a high school special education teacher. Sunday Market Square. Susan Wall

REMINISCING ABOUT CHRISTIANSTED 60 YEARS AGO Part 1 in a Series, King Street

I had been auditing one of Cynthia Hatfield’s inspiring art classes in 2013 at UVI which included a discussion about the creative process in a historical context. One day the students cited their impressions of the revitalized Christiansted Sunday Market Square and our historic town in general. I was somewhat taken back by comments of our jewel-of-a-town by some young students as a place they didn't go and found no reason to!

King Street. Susan Wall

Christiasted aka “Bassin” was the hub on the island for commerce, social exchange and for residing, if one did not live “out in the country.” Christiansted was dominated by the four magnificent, centuries old churches and attendant schools. At the entrance to town was the imposing Friedensthal Moravian, then St. John’s Anglican, K to 8th grade, Lord God of Sabaoth Lutheran, Kindergarten only, and Holy Cross Catholic, with St. Mary’s School, K to 12, run by the strict Belgian nuns, aka de mudder dem. I was one of the few Protestants who attended from 1954 –1960. The traditional churches, schools, family and yes, the town/village, raised its children. Together they set our moral compass. The original Sunday Market was relocated to make room for the “modern,” air-conditioned Alexander Theater with ample parking and double feature movies. It replaced the Teytaud silent movie house on Strand Street. On King Street, Joe Alexander had the first gasoline pump for cars. Up the hill was the Avis newspaper printer, close to where the Brodhurst family lived and Ms. Lorma Hansen. The popular Jungle Casino/Cruzan Moon Nightclub across the way came later as did the “Skinker’s Stonehenge.”

On King Street, on the left, Monroe Clendinen had his jewelry store, the gracious Mrs. Diaz had Nydia’s Dry Goods shop across from their residence, next was Virginia Shaubah’s home with Marjorie’s hairdresser downstairs. Next to the Santa Cruz Pharmacy was Claude Markoe and Philip Gerard Insurance; Ms. Nora Amrit’s beauty parlor was on the corner. On the next block, I remember Mr. Donald Abramson’s perennial friendly smile in front of his electric store. Next to Limpricht Park was the phone company with real live operators to assist with your calls! The stately Pentheny Building had the law office of Warren Young and James Isherwood. Next to that was the beautiful, two-story Continental Store with priceless, duty-free imports. It first opened in the Gladys Stackman building on the corner. On the opposite corner was Brow Soda which produced the best soft drinks ever bottled, made right here in Santa Cruz. Brick Facades. Susan Wall

It triggered my personal reflection of our precious, dynamic vibrant, friendly town half a century ago. It is where I grew up when our family moved up from Frederiksted in 1954. It is important to me that Christiansted not be buried or lost. It must be honored, respected and restored. Our town represents our common values of history, civility, business, social interaction, and yes, pride. In defense, I have to quickly make note of what I recall, though my memory is not always accurate or factual. I apologize for inaccuracies or lapses. These were idyllic days and certain realities may be overlooked!

TRACING HISTORY

On the next block on King Street was The Danish Public School run by Anders Petersen. Across the street on the corner was Dickie and Harry Armstrong’s first car dealership for Ford. Mr. Christiansen ran his appliance store next to the Lutheran Church. On the other side of the church was the VI Bank, later occupied by the exciting Cavanaugh’s store. The Valls property dominated the block across from Government House. There was much less bureaucracy and employees than today. Ms. Pearl B. Larsen was in the building on the other corner. She is remembered as a tireless educator but also for having the best parade-viewing venue in town! Pivar Real Estate office occupied her downstairs. On the next block were Caron’s Perfume Shop and the beautiful Danish House run by Balfour Fleming and Mr. Walters. Back in the courtyard, Café de Paris served tasty lobster blinis. Mr. Pebbles commanded a place of respect in the well-worn hardware store where Alexander Hamilton worked as a lad and eventually rose to great heights in American history. Anna Maria Durieux had the Conch Shell Shop and her father, Leo, had his auto mechanic workplace in the huge yard behind, going towards the waterfront. Across was Bill Barr and Father Mac’s locally made ceramic and souvenir shop on the Church Street corner. Part 2, Jun/Jul issue, out May 26/27 The Waterfront, Church & Hospital Streets.

In 2013, after her daughter graduated from Le Cordon Bleu in Orlando, she came home to St. Croix and began receiving orders for cakes and cupcakes. “As I helped her prep orders, I had fond memories my childhood in the kitchen with my late maternal grandmother Florita Petersen (Mudda). LEATHERBACK LANDING HAS ARRIVED IN CANE BAY! From Leatherback Brewing partners, Win Welsh and John Giannopoulos, comes an exciting new venture with a focus on promoting exceptional local beer while embracing and celebrating the community. The space formerly known as Eat @ Cane Bay will now boast a rotating selection of fresh Leatherback Brewing beers on tap and in cans along with classic island cocktails. The menu will still feature many of the favorites, such as the famous ½ Pound Burger, but Leatherback Landing is also proud to partner with more local farmers, bakers, and fisherman to promote and showcase quality ingredients produced all over St. Croix. With that comes the chance to expand the vegetarian and vegan options as well. The one thing all of the menu options have in common is that they pair perfectly with the world-renowned views of Cane Bay. Nestled between the rental cottages of Play @ Cane Bay and Sweet Bottom Dive Shop, Leatherback Landing is the perfect day-trip destination where you can bring the whole family. The restaurant’s unique location offers plenty of parking, and reservations and large parties are welcome. Beach chair rentals are available for those looking to enjoy a drink with their toes in the sand. Grab a fresh, cold brew and take in the natural beauty of the island. You may even catch a glimpse of some playful sea creatures. Snag a seat at the bar and watch the sun set while you relax during daily Happy Hour that runs from 4pm - 6pm. Catch different local musicians almost every day, including during Sunday Brunch which runs from 10am - 6pm every week. Leatherback Landing is excited to be part of the growing North Shore scene. Craft beer, local food, and delicious cocktails are a great complement to the lively events, fire shows, and, of course, the beautiful beach that makes North Shore the spot to go on the island.

Quiana L. Adams THE QUI INGREDIENT

Suenita Banwaree

Featuring me, a woman-of-color, as well as my hands in my imagery is intentional and important. As a source of energy, making food is a tactile process. We use our hands to create meals, nourish our families, celebrate life, show love, and most importantly build community. I can preserve the memory of these intentions and share all of this joy with the viewer when I photograph my cooking this way. The Qui Ingredient has been afforded some wonderful professional opportunities this past year and I’m excited to continue creating new work, steadily build my brand, and introduce more streams of content that engage home-cooks. I welcome more opportunities to photograph food that looks delicious and tastes amazing!”

Rudy Rhod 2019.

My pallet is very diverse so it was vital not to limit myself to one style of cooking or shooting and remember, as a friend said, to ”Have fun!” My goal was to develop by voice by creating as much quality content as possible.

Dorito Dress.

In starting The Qui Ingredient last year, it was the first time in years I had created truly self-directed work. I photograph and style each shoot and cook and style all the food as well. A bit daunting at first, I quickly realized that I had to cook, style, and shoot according to my truth.

Storytelling masks.

“For a number of years, I have run a successful photography freelance. I use to joke that food photography was my not so secret, secret passion. With The Qui Ingredient I wanted to provide myself a creative outlet combining two activities that bring me joy, photography and cooking. Last year, I took this idea and turned it into a business. Food has always fascinated me; so many of my memories are connected to it. For as long as I can remember, I wanted to learn as much as I could about food, food prep, spices, and cultures for myself and to share with family and friends through cooking.

She has been a prominent art educator in the community since 2011, with experience stemming from St. Croix Educational Complex, John H. Woodson, and currently Good Hope Country Day School where she teaches a wide range of visual arts curriculums. Projects from this fashion design course are displayed at the Annual Art & Fashion Show each May. “As a child, I remember using old frilly socks to construct clothes with my sister for our dolls, “ Suenita says. Today she likes to surrounded herself with all kinds of art and artists alike. “Much of my inspiration came from right in my home, seeing constant creations from my mother decorating our home with plants and ornaments, my brothers drawing comics, my father welding his designs, my sister writing poems, and Granny telling stories. From very young, I knew that art and creativity would play a major role in my life.” Suenita earned a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree at Columbus College of Art & Design in Ohio, and has worked with fashion brands like Abercrombie & Fitch and Victoria Secret at their home offices. Suenita is also a visionary who is passionate about making major improvements in her community through arts and culture empowerment. Our Danish Connection Throughout the Caribbean in former days, several European nations contended for ownership of many islands for their natural resources and value as providers of the profitable sugar cane cultivation. The small Scandinavian country of Denmark was an early player in St. Thomas 1660, St. John 1718, and St. Croix as the last but most profitable acquisition purchased from France in 1733. During the 184 years this island was owned by Denmark, that distant nation left its mark in so many ways. It can be said that it would be hard to find an island whose legacy from a former colonial owner is viewed by its population in as positive and friendly light as ours. This has resulted in a close relationship between Denmark and the U.S. Virgin Islands that has brought thousands of visitors from Denmark to visit these former possessions that hold so many memories of former days before 1917, the year of the Transfer to the United States. Here are some examples: • The solid 18th and 19th architectural structures, including official buildings, commercial or private residences, constructed of brick brought here as ballast, providing a handsome link to the past still in use. • The prolific ruins of the many plantation structures that once produced sugar and rum. Including the many former windmills that ground sugar cane. • The continued use of the old plantation names for all areas of the countryside, even the 18th century division of the island into named Quarters, as well as the old Danish street names in the towns, plus the old-time numbering of street addresses. Our two towns are named for Danish kings. • The presence in four churches of the official Danish Lutheran denomination. • The old cemeteries with special sections for Danish gravesites, and thorough records by Danish scribes of everyone buried there. • The continued use of certain holidays from the Danish calendar. • The many families carrying Danish last names despite African origin, and even use of historic Danish first names for Crucian children. • The existence of a Friends of Denmark organization that carries out exchange visit Festivals by members with its sister Society in Denmark, Danish West Indian Society, in addition to offering scholarships, sponsoring visits by Danish choirs, athletes, musicians and scholars. • The existence of a voluminous website accessible by anyone that covers all the persons residing here throughout the Danish period 1734 to 1917, thanks to the thorough records kept by the Danes during that time. • Access on the internet to over 5 million documents at the Danish archives relevant to the Danish West Indies, as our islands were called. • Last, but not least, the friendly Crucian population that looks out for visiting Danes and makes them feel welcome. If you happen to be a visiting Dane, we bid you Velkommen!

Virgin Islands Flag.

Susan Wall

May 17—Virgin Islands Flag Day and The Importance of Flags in our Island History by Nina York A visitor may wonder why several sites they visit in St. Croix display a series of 7 different flags of European nations. That is a documentation of the six nations and one religious order that over the years since 1493 have laid claim to this island. In sequence: Spain, the Netherlands, England, the Knights of Malta, France, Denmark, and the present United States, the latter since 1917 after the Transfer on March 31 from almost 200 years as a Danish colony. On May 17, 1921, the current U. S. Virgin Islands flag was introduced, and May 17 is now the official Virgin Islands Flag Day. At that time, the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps were in charge of the administration of the newly acquired islands of the former Danish West Indies: St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix. The tension that existed here during the first World War was over, but the islands were not thriving, and our sugar and rum industry, this island’s principal source of income, suffered when Prohibition was instituted in 1920 and prevented the production of our signature beverage. The population felt disenfranchised by having to wait for United States citizenship until 1927. But every territory, state, and country needs a flag, and while the U.S. Government already possessed a similar design, The Great Seal of the United States, depicting the American eagle with a shield of the stripes of red and white adjoining a field of blue, on this one the eagle holds in its right talon a more modest olive branch, symbolizing peace, and in the left one only three arrows, symbolizing defense of our three main islands. An appropriate design while this territory was under military command until 1931. The initiative for its creation came from Governor, Rear Admiral Summer Ely Whitmore Kitelle, who commissioned its artistic creation. Prior to the Transfer, the island had seen the flag of the governing nation of Denmark flown in many places, not merely at official locations. The Danes are very proud of their flag, known as the Dannebrog, and claim it to be the oldest flag in the world in continual use, over eight hundred years. Its simple white cross on a red field can still be seen, occasionally even on the island’s official buildings and landmarks. Denmark has a different flag day than ours, coinciding with the date of June 15, 1219 when legend has it that the original Dannebrog descended from heaven during a military battle, giving the Danes the incentive to prevail. Many of us Crucians, as we call ourselves, while loyal to the United States, of which we are proud citizens, would like to see a flag design that conveys the beauty and history of the U.S. Virgin Islands that we cherish. With so many talented artists living and working here, it is our dream that we hope one day will be fulfilled. Nina York, born in Denmark but a St. Croix resident since 1976, has been a contributor for this publication since 2009 and was its Managing Editor from 1990-2003. She now offers tours for visitors from Denmark and the mainland, does translations, and volunteers for Rotary and the St. Croix Friends of Denmark Society. April / May 2020 • 39

The Project has since developed into one of the most comprehensive, long-term sea turtle research and recovery efforts in the world. This work contributed to the creation of Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge as the first refuge in the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service Refuge System established for the purpose of protecting endangered sea turtles. During the last three decades, there has been a substantial increase in the number of nesting leatherbacks, from less than 20 individuals in the early years to more than 100 in recent years. The Turtle Watch Education Program is offered to youth groups and community groups. The program runs from Tuesdays through Saturdays starting in April and running through the end of July. Reservations are only accepted for groups with at least 15 and no more than 30 people. No individual reservations are allowed. Weekend nights are limited to youth groups. Great care is taken by the program coordinator and the research team to minimize any disturbance to the turtles. For more information or to make a reservation, please contact the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at (340) 690-9452 or sandypoint.turtlewatch@gmail.com or visit the website.

Destination St. Croix GOOD TO KNOW!

DRIVE LEFT Whether renting a car or crossing the street, it is vital to remember that traffic in the USVI flows from the left side of the road. St. Croix has two towns—Christiansted at the center on the North Shore and Frederiksted at the West End. The Caribbean Sea, which surrounds the island, is always there to guide you along the roads that wind around the coast. Car rental agencies have a variety of vehicles available from sporty jeeps to roomy air-conditioned sedans, vans, and SUVs. The average price usually includes unlimited mileage but you fill the tank upon return! Both US and other driver’s licenses are recognized. The driver and front seat passenger are required by law to use seat belts and cell phone talking or texting is not allowed. Parking in Christiansted is limited. There is daytime parking in the National Park Service lot near Ft. Christiansvaern, until 4:30 pm, and a public lot with fees on Strand and King Cross Street. Running from mid-island west to within 1 mile of Frederiksted is the 4-lane, divided Melvin H. Evans Highway. The speed limit is 55. In other areas, the 35 mph limit applies; in town, 20 mph unless otherwise posted.

WORSHIP St. Croix’s history is mirrored in its old church structures. The Moravian brethren, arriving here in the 1730s from Saxony in today’s Germany, founded their mission to bring Christianity to the enslaved part of the population. The historic Anglican (Episcopalian) churches built in Gothic style include St. John’s in Christiansted and, in Frederiksted, St. Paul’s church. The large number of Irish settlers, along with Englishmen and Hispanics, have contributed to the presence of the Catholic church; Holy Cross in Christiansted is the oldest in the Virgin Islands. The Danish rule of the island from 1733 to 1917 brought the Lutheran church, which still plays a large role here. Lord God of Sabaoth in Christiansted occupies the former Dutch Reformed Church; Holy Trinity in Frederiksted was built shortly after the town was founded. The Dutch Reformed church (Presbyterian) now has a new midisland home. There are 150 churches on St. Croix, from SeventhDay Adventist to Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, and many more. Church attendance and activities are important to a large part of our population; visitors are always welcome at services, often a high point in their island experience. Many other faiths offer places of worship—a Jewish synagogue, a Hindu temple, and a Muslim mosque, to name a few. A church listing can be found in the yellow pages of our local phone book beginning on Page 48. 48 • April / May 2020

7 FLAG HISTORY HISTORY is what this island has an abundance of, going back several thousand years. Back then, the Amerindian population that had migrated here from South America called it Ay Ay. A tribe known as Caribs lent their name to the region and was encountered at Salt River in 1493 by the first Europeans, the 17-ship fleet of Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to the new world. He claimed the island for Spain and called it Santa Cruz, the Spanish version of its present name. Over the following centuries, many European nations started exploiting the Caribbean archipelago, with the British, Dutch, and French joining Spain in taking possession of the rich resources found in some of the islands, battling pirates that posed a dramatic challenge to the treasures derived from mineral resources. But agriculture, in the form of sugar cane cultivation, turned out to be a winning formula, as sugar, and its by-product rum, were incredibly valuable crops. Under changing ownership by the Dutch, British and French, including a brief ownership by the Knights of Malta, this island did not prosper, and it was sparsely colonized. The French, that owned it from the mid-1600’s and gave it its present name, actually abandoned it around 1700 having failed at developing a viable plantation economy. For over 30 years St. Croix returned to its natural state, when a business enterprise of the little Scandinavian nation of Denmark, that since 1666 had taken possession of St. Thomas and later St. John to the north of St. Croix, in 1733 made the

decision to expand and purchase this island from the French. Known as the Danish West India and Guinea Company, it excelled in sugar cultivation and export made possible by slave trade from West Africa, a necessity for developing a large-scale operation of sugar cane harvests, for which this island was ideally suited thanks to its terrain and rainfall. In no time, the island was transformed, with forests giving way to planted sugar cane fields by thousands of enslaved persons who, after being brought here under horrific conditions, toiled in the fields under the hot sun. The island’s cane fields and accompanying estate structures were owned by an assortment of nationalities, with the English, Scots and Irish dominating, but the military and administration was run by Danes, after the island ownership was conferred to the Danish king in 1771. Soon, a lot of money was made here, but at a high cost of human life. The island posed health risks from tropical diseases and poor hygienic standards and opposition to the cruel treatment of the enslaved eventually brought about emancipation in 1848, several years after the British-owned islands had initiated it. But the fact that cane sugar was not so valuable since beet sugar now competed with it made conditions worse, and a revolt in 1878 led to further decline. So the islands of the Danish West Indies, as the three were called, were a sad sight and, in the early 20th century when WW1 was underway, the United States took interest in us for our strategic location, particularly as the Panama Canal had just been completed, and Germany was threatening to take possession of us. At a price of $25 million in gold, the transfer of the islands, to be known as the United States Virgin Islands, took place on March 31, 1917. And, the rest is History, of a different kind.

CHRISTIANSTED WALKING TOUR Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of CHRISTIANSTED at the site of the Old Scale House 1 on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. One section of the 1856 structure displays the scale used in former days to weigh barrels of rum and sugar. The other section holds a bookstore and gift shop as well as an information center about all things St. Croix. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service.

Fort Christiansvaern 3 was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appearance reflects the 1830’s period.

Originally, Government House 6 on King Street, was built as a home for a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. The former are open to the public (entrance at mid-building on King Street). The Lutheran Church 7 across Queen Cross Street on King Street, was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added. Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall 8 on the left corner, which holds both the tiny Apothecary Museum on Queen Cross Street, open anytime, and in the courtyard the Archaeological Museum, open only Saturdays 10 am-2 pm. Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market 9 , laid out in the original town plan from 1735, and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.

Christiansted National Historic Site Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park Saystem in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.” Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors. Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park 2. The park contains a bronze bust of the renowned slave rebellion leader. The Oscar E. Henry Customs House 3 was built in the 1800s. The Freedom Fountain 4, facing the pier, was installed for the Emancipation 150th Anniversary Celebration. After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, the town was rebuilt in Victorian style. Victoria House 5, on Strand Street, and Apothecary Hall 6, 63 on King Cross Street between King and Queen Streets, preserve the Frederksted architecture of that time. Both received storm damage in September. The Visitor’s Bureau 7, is located upstairs on Strand Street above the Frederiksted Mall and next door to the historic light blue building housing the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts 8. Frederiksted is home to a number of historic churches, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church 9, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church 10, Friedensberg Moravian Church 11, and St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church 12. The Arthur Able Complex 13, formerly The Danish School (1799), is now the office of the Governor in Fredersted at Hospital and Market Street. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library 14, built in 1803. The Market Place 15, is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted.

I

am excited to have joined the St. George Village Botanical Garden in January 2020 as Director of Annual Giving and Development. Originally from Atlanta, I have enjoyed lived in NJ, SC, NC, OH and VT. My family and I excitedly relocated to St. Croix July 2019. My husband, Bill, is the Head of School at Good Hope Country Day School. We have three sons, 18,16 and 13. My background includes working in event planning and major gifts for the March of Dimes, Annual Fund/ Development work for vari- Sally Bugg. ous independent schools, helping grow and manage a Premier Youth Soccer Club as well as volunteering with local schools and charities in the communities we have lived. I’m passionate about cooking, recycling, conservation, local food and produce, being near the ocean and adventures with my family! The position at SGVBG was of great interest to me as it combines so many things I enjoy in one place as well as an opportunity to use my Development experience to benefit the Garden and my new community. There is so much history here at the Garden – the 16- acre garden is situated among the buildings and ruins of an 18th and 19th century sugar cane plantation. The site also overlaps an Amerindian settlement which dates back to c.100 A.D. There are also plants that are found nowhere else but here on St. Croix and others that are Mango Melee July 12! found only in Ted Davis the Caribbean. (from SGVBG website) My focus, hitting the ground, is to put important systems in place to help

How the Garden is Growing! Meet Sally Bugg

us better communicate with our membership and focus on member retention as well as donor management. The Garden is a very important part of the fabric of St. Croix for so many reasons, be they educational or environmental, and we need to be able to keep the Garden up and running as events come and go. Establishing an Annual Giving program will keep the Garden on solid footing for the future. So many people come through the lovely gates here either from cruise tours, school groups, events or other planned vacations and we want to provide a way to be a part

of the future of the Garden. We will also look towards a legacy gift program for bequest inclusions as a way for anyone to remember the Garden. The next major event at SGVBG is Mango Melee and will be held Sunday, July 12th! Save the Date! An exciting new program here at the Garden is the Virgin Islands Rare Plant Initiative (VIRPE). It is a collaborative effort on the islands of St. Croix, St. Thomas, and St. John to identify, collect, and propagate threatened or endangered plant species. The goal of this important initiative is to

preserve and protect our botanical heritage for current and future generations. These native species displayed within our Garden, help raise awareness and educate visitors in the plants’ local and traditional uses for medicine, food, and clothing. Ultimately, by distributing these plants to residents across the Virgin Islands for their own gardens, we help ensure the preservation and cultivation of our unique botanical legacy. (from SGVBG website) Trees for St. Croix has been a wildly popular project that is being overseen by Dr. Michael Thomas. The program will help replace trees lost in the back to back hurricanes in 2017. The first grant for 6,000 free trees to be distributed is starting to get trees out to those that placed orders. We hope to receive an additional grant to continue the program and distribute additional trees! Why visit the Garden? The cannon ball tree and the sausage tree would be my first answer! But there are so many more reasons. The St. George Village Botanical Garden has so much to offer it’s hard to sum it all up. Come out for a visit, even if you have only an hour or two to spare. Gift yourself the gift of nature. If you have any questions regarding SGVBG and how you can get involved by becoming a member, making a gift or becoming a volunteer, please check out our website or email me at development@sgvbg.org. Winding roads offer dramatic cliffside sea views! End your drive at Leatherback Landing with an island-crafted brew across from Cane Bay beach. • After relaxing on the North Shore get ready to take a drive through the Rainforest; another driving adventure with some unique stops along the way. Say ‘hi’ to the beer-drinking pigs followed by a shot of Mamajuana with Norma at the Mt. f you look to the north you will see the best known of all stars groups, the Big Dipper. The Big Dipper is part of a larger group of stars, the constellation of Ursa Major, the Great Bear.

But, let’s stay with the seven bright stars that form the dipper; three stars form the curved handle and four more the bowl. You can use the Big Dipper to find your way around the sky. If you draw a line through the two stars at the end of the bowl and extend the line toward the horizon, you will come to a fainter star, this is Polaris, the North Star. Polaris is called the North Star because it is almost exactly directly over the North Pole of the Earth. Thus, while all the other stars circle the night sky from East to West, Polaris stays in the same spot. Go back to the Big Dipper. Draw a line through the same two stars, nut this time in the opposite direction. You will come to a bright reddish colored star. This is

64 • April / May 2020

Regulus, the heart of Leo the Lion. It is a bit difficult to find a lion in this part of the sky. So, why did people call this part of the sky Leo? Long ago these stars were seen during the summer months when water in the outlying areas dried up and thus the lions would come down to the river. People of course, lived near the river and people and the lions did not get along. So, when you see the Sun move into the area of the sky with the stars of the lion in the sky, look out for the real lions are around. You probably will be able to see that Regulus is the period at the base of a backwards question mark. The top of the question marks forms the lion’s head. A little farther east a triangle made of fainter stars forms the lion’s hind quarters and tail. Return once more to the Big Dipper. This time follow the arc of the handle to the bright star Arcturus and speed on to Spica. Arcturus is the brightest star in Boötes, the Herdsman. Spica is a piece of wheat being held in the hand of Virgo, the Goddess of the Harvest.

The night of April 22nd-23rd will be the maximum of the Lyrid meteor shower. If you are away from bright lights and smog, between midnight and dawn you might see a dozen or so “shooting stars” per hour. Shooting stars, more properly called meteors, are the flash of light we see as pebble sized rocks burn up speeding through the air some 50 miles about the Earth. The evening of May 6th-7th is the maximum of the Eta Aquarid meteor shower and on a good dark night you might see some 40 or so meteors or “shooting stars” per hour. The best time to look is between midnight and dawn. Unfortunately, this year the Full Moon will overpower all but the brightest “falling stars. Venus will dominate the northwestern sky in the early evening. Look for a bright star-like object. In fact, Venus is the third brightest natural object in the sky after the Sun and the Moon. Jupiter, Mars, and Saturn will all be visible in the east in the hours before dawn.
