history
about the virgin islands The U.S Territories (St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix) and the British Virgin Islands (to the north and east) are among the most beautiful geographical areas in the world, blessed with powdery beaches and sun drenched weather. The islands lie in the path of soft trade-winds blowing direct from Portugal, which perhaps accounts for the fact that “Santa Cruz” was among the first islands to be sighted by Christopher Columbus on his second voyage westward. He then sailed northeast, passing St Thomas, St John and Tortola and called them collectively “Las Virgenes”. After his visit, the islands went back to sleep for more than a hundred and fifty years. They woke to find the flag of Denmark planted on St. Thomas, the French Tricolor on St. Croix and the Union Jack flying over Tortola (where it still flies). The Arawak Indian population had disappeared. Denmark later claimed St. John, bought St. Croix and built the Danish West Indies into thriving sugar cane and trading islands. Slaves were imported early to work the growing number of sugar plantations. The islands were also used as a base for re-shipment of slaves to other areas. continued... 22
history
continued
Fort Christian
After the Danish abolished slavery in 1848, planters began to abandon their estates and the population and economy dwindled. Threatened by German expansion during World War I, the U.S. bought the Danish West Indies (now the American Virgin Islands) on March 31, 1917. Even then the islands were expensive real estate – almost $300 an acre.
99 Steps
In 1927, residents were granted U.S. citizenship. Until 1931, the islands were administered by the U.S. Navy. Then they were placed under the Department of the Interior with a Governor appointed by the President. A locally elected legislature (15 members from all three islands) has operated since 1852 but it wasn’t until 1970 that islanders could vote for their own Governor, and in 1972, a delegate to the U.S Congress. Though U.S. citizens, residents have no vote in national elections. Nor does the Washington representative have a vote on the floor of the house.

duty free
shopping
No visitor to the U. S. Virgin Islands returns home without doing a little shopping. Who can resist the best duty-free shopping in the Caribbean? With an allowance of $1,600—double that of other Caribbean islands — U.S. residents, including children, can enjoy the shopping experience without thought of duty or taxes. Members of a family residing in one household and traveling together may make a joint declaration. For example, a couple traveling with two children may bring
articles free of duty valued up to $6,400. You may send gifts to friends and relatives (excluding tobacco and alcohol), but no more than one package per day to the same address—up to $100 in value. These items need not be declared. Perfume, jewelry, tobacco (you can take up to 5 cartons of cigarettes), cameras, crystal, china and electronics are available for 30-60% off U.S. prices. If you’d like to take advantage of our great prices on liquor, take back up to 5 (1 litre) bottles, as long as one is made in the Virgin Islands (such as Cruzan Rum). Buy as much as you want of anything island-made; fashions, perfume (St. John’s Bay Rum), straw hats, jewelry, as they are custom exempt; and loose precious gems (diamonds, rubies, sapphires, tanzanites, alexandrites and emeralds) are also duty-free. 26
shopping You get the break and it’s only for those who shop in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Your tax-free allowance doubles when you spend it in the U.S. Virgin Islands. As a duty-free port, St. Thomas has a number of sleek, modern jewelry stores. Head to Main Street in the heart of historic Charlotte Amalie and wander the fine shops, admiring the Danish colonial architecture as well as the treasures housed inside. Whether you are looking for something specific or something in-general, you will find it here. You might have to check out a few shops but you will eventually find what you are looking for. If diamonds and gold are not for you then be sure to look for the vast collections of fine sterling silver jewelry found in most jewelry stores.

shopping districts Charlotte Amalie (Downtown) The discerning shopper will be absolutely delighted in the selection of merchandise displayed in all of the “Downtown” stores. This may be the most famous shopping district in the Caribbean. Main Street is lined on both sides of the street with duty-free stores. You will encounter a lot of jewelry stores but you can also find duty-free liquor, perfume, fashion and souvenir retailers interspersed. You can venture down the side streets and historic alleys to find many other types of stores. Lovely old warehouses, built from yellow bricks carried across the Atlantic ocean on colonial trading ships, line the alleys of the shopping district.
Havensight Shopping Mall With its location right on the WICO Cruise Ship dock, Havensight Mall is a convenient, less crowded way to go shopping for the duty-free purchases that you may be looking for. All of the major retailers have well stocked stores with the same merchandise and prices as downtown. And if you make a purchase in a Havensight Merchants’ Association member store, your purchases will be 100% guaranteed! Look for the Association logo on the doors of the member merchants.
Yacht Haven Grande Located within walking distance to the Havensight Mall and the West Indian Company cruise ship dock is the home of upscale international and local retailers and restaurants. If you are going to town have your taxi, on the way back to the dock, let you off there. Some of the upscale boutiques are: Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Bulgari, BCBG, White House Black Market, Coach.
Crown Bay Center This shopping area, located on the Crown Bay Cruise Ship dock, features duty free shops and vendors of local arts and crafts. You will find many of the same stores as you will find Downtown. 40

best beaches All beaches in the Virgin Islands are open to the public. A few have dressing facilities and showers – Coki (at Coral World) and Magen’s Bay on St. Thomas; Cinnamon and Trunk Bay on St. John. It is advisable to leave valuables on the ship unless you have a plastic container to take them along on your swim or snorkel. Avoid the mid-day sun. Start out with a 20 minute exposure with suntan lotion on your first few days.
COKI BEACH - Noted for its tranquil turquoise waters, Coki Beach has great snorkeling and scuba diving. Take your first scuba lesson from Coki Beach Dive Center located on the beach. You will find chair rentals, beach waiters serving drinks and vendors selling t-shirts, sunblock, art work, bags, towels and more! If you want to see the marine life without getting wet, visit Coral World right next door.
MAGENS BAY BEACH - Named one of the world’s most beautiful beaches, Magens Bay, the largest beach on St. Thomas, offers changing rooms, bathrooms and outdoor showers. You can buy pizza, burgers and dogs along with tropical drinks at their restaurant. You can rent chairs and floats from the Boutique (great selections of beachwear and water toys). A water sports operation rents paddle boats, kayaks, SUP’s and sunfish. There is a $5 per person entrance fee to this public beach. continued... 48
MORNINGSTAR BEACH - is the main beach for the Frenchman’s Reef and Morningstar Resorts. The watersports operation offers paddle boats, kayaks, sailboats, jet skis and more. Chairs, umbrellas, snorkel gear and floats are available for rent. A beachside restaurant and bar lies conveniently at water’s edge along with a fun island boutique “Coco Jones”.
SAPPHIRE BEACH - Windsurfing lessons, snorkeling, beach chairs and umbrella rentals are just some of the available amenities. Water is for the most part calm and the snorkeling is quite good to either side of the beach. A great beach for learning windsurfing as typically the wind blows towards the beach making the return sail a breeze!
LINDQUIST BEACH - Located on the East End of St Thomas charges an entrance fee ($3). It is a very natural beach lined along the shore with indigenous plants and trees with no development within sight. Very popular with the locals. Long, fine, white, sand beach with calm, pristine, crystal blue water. A beautiful Caribbean beach!
EMERALD BEACH - Nearest beach to the Crown Bay Dock. Food, drinks, water toys, and snorkel gear rentals. 49
