On behalf of the people and Government of the United States Virgin Islands, I applaud St. Croix This Week magazine for highlighting the best in entertainment, siteseeing, dining, shopping, and a myriad of recreational activities available on St. Croix. Both residents and visitors will find on page after page of this helpful resource guide eyecatching attractions, on-island features, and other points of interest. Whether with family, friends, or on your own, this magazine has the inside track and advance view of all the upcoming events and activities on the “Big Island.” St. Croix’s relaxing beaches and rolling hillsides are the perfect complement for a weekend get-away, and the downtown shopping and restaurants in Christiansted and Frederiksted offer a variety of choices. There are hiking tours, snorkeling and scuba excursions, rainforest sights, and an abundance of other natural and cultural attractions throughout the island. The options for fun and entertainment are truly limitless, and St. Croix This Week provides immediate access to all of St. Croix’s major attractions, while highlighting those that are off-the-beaten path. As the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Croix has a natural beauty that is both charming and awe-inspiring. Its wondrous landscapes, hillside views, oceanfronts, and downtown areas tell the story of an island rich in culture and history. The influence from Denmark is readily visible in our architecture and windmills, offering a pleasant introduction to the experience of our people of strong Caribbean traditions. With a long history of providing the inside scoop on the latest and best in family fun and island excursion entertainment, St. Croix This Week truly captures the beat and pulse of our people. It is my pleasure to extend best wishes to all readers of St. Croix This Week for a safe and enjoyable experience in paradise. We hope you will enjoy our home as much as we enjoy hosting you.

Rising to the Challenge of Preservation by Sonia Jacobs Dow, Executive Director, St. Croix Landmarks Society St. Croix and her sister Virgin Islands have a unique history as part of the former “sugar islands” of the Caribbean. Here, visitors are invited to move beyond the sun, sand and sea experience and the charm of colonial architecture to a deeper understanding of St. Croix’s people, their contributions to this and world communities and the responsibility Crucians feel to honor those who came before us and to preserve cultural traditions, history and places for those who will follow. The St. Croix Landmarks Society has for 65 years undertaken the challenge of preserving that unique legacy of culture, history and the structures that stand as a testament to the ingenuity, skills and labor of enslaved Africans and the aspirations of Europeans and Americans who sought fortune in these special places. SELF, PLACE and RESPONSIBILITY are the words that best describe Landmarks’ preservation initiatives. Programs, museum tours, exhibits and the unequaled Research Library & Archives offer a glimpse of who we are as a people through the stories of our ancestors and their triumph over the harshest of experiences – human bondage and the de-humanizing process and mindset that allowed it. Undoubtedly both enslaved and enslaver were changed. Ours, like all colonial stories brandishes painful memories, but wisdom, strength, and spirituality persevere. From its base at the Estate Whim Museum, Landmarks offers spirit-moving experiences for residents and visitors. In the serenity of the site, are juxtaposed great house, slave quarters and the humble My Granny House. Breezes moving through the trees disguise the hushed voices of ancestors urging recollection and healing. As a respite from the emotions of the experience, the Cookhouse offers Johnny cakes, patés, red grout, local fruit juices and other traditional fare. New exhibits opened in July 2013 and enhance the museum: “Who Bin Sen Yoh: Crucian Musicians & Their Music employs photos and cherished artifacts to shine the spotlight on native music genre and related dance and dramatic traditions, including Quelbe, Cariso, and Masquerading. www.stcroix thisweek .com

Ties that Bind – Just say “Cousin” no need to tell whether first, second, or far removed, because in our hearts they are all the same. However as the elders who hold our oral history pass on, we recognize the need to document relationships for future generations. The exhibit tells the stories of many families with roots on St. Croix and abroad and showcases the sleuthing of those for whom genealogy is a passion. The Roebuck Family: New Vines from Strong Roots is but one display of a history that does not shy away from embracing ancestors whether African- or European-born. Emancipation Revisited focuses on enslaved individuals, arrested for active participation in the 1848 Emancipation rebellion through which Africans and their descendants gained a measure of freedom.

Our affiliation with FamilySearch International brings the world’s largest genealogy collection to the fingertips of researchers seeking to trace ancestors around the globe. The St. Croix Landmarks Society’s work on behalf of and with the people of St. Croix is invaluable. The Society’s 2013 Preservation Challenge Campaign aims to raise FRIENDS who value the honoring of the lives of our collective ancestors and FUNDS for this worthy cause. The St. Croix Landmarks Society invites your support of a purposeful and careful endeavor.

St. Croix Landmarks Society 340-772-0598 www.stcroixlandmarks.com

Come Live With Me underscores the common goal of two artists from vastly different origins to preserve evidence of our existence. The exhibit brings together the work of Lloyd “Dove” Braffith, famed Crucian artist, and Lee Platt who after World War II found a home for his heart on St. Croix. The Research Library & Archives at Estate Whim house a treasure trove of rare books, maps, photographs and other documentation about St. Croix and her people. Our Family History Center collects disparate resources for those who cherish family bonds and the hunt for connections – censuses, the matriculs of the slavery era, court, vital statistics and other government records, church archives and business and personal papers. Island Worship

Rare Finds – 340-713-9254

The history of our island is mirrored in its old church structures, many of which have recently been restored. The Moravian brethren, arriving here in the 1730s from Saxony in today’s Germany, founded their mission to bring Christianity to the enslaved part of the population. Their handsome yellow buildings at the entrance to Christiansted and red-roofed white wooden church mid-island, along with a contemporary church in Frederiksted, attest to their continued importance.

This fascinating shop is found at the gateway to Gallows Bay — turn left after Tutto Bene on East End Road. Here you’ll discover an assortment of different, fun gifts and collectibles. Open Wednesday thru Saturday, they offer something old, something new, something for every taste and budget. Browse here for a memento of St. Croix. 713-9254.

Undercover Books – 340-719-1567

Rare Finds Antiques & Collectibles.

Susan Wall

If you are looking for an independent bookstore in St. Croix, Undercover Books & Gifts in Gallows Bay is it. The Bistro is located right next door, so you can enjoy a cup of coffee after browsing the shelves. Undercover has everything you need in a bookstore. You will find the latest in fiction, and non-fiction as well as a fantastic children’s section. Don’t be surprised if you run into one or two local writers while you’re there; they have a great local interest selection and provide a comprehensive representation of the local talent.

The historic Anglican (Episcopalian) churches built in Gothic style include St. John’s in Christiansted, and in Frederiksted the beautifully restored St. Paul’s church, which had been damaged by a fire in 1996. These and other Anglican churches bear witmess to the large English population which settled here (and also brought us our custom of left lane driving. The large number of Irish settlers, along with Englishmen and Hispanics, have contributed to the presece of the Catholic church; Holy Cross in Christiansted is the oldest in the Virgin Islands; also significant and historic are St. Ann’s (with an interesting shrine) mid-island, and St. Patrick’s in Frederiksted.

Antiques, Unique Gifts and Collectibles

The Danish rule of the island from 1733 to 1917 brought the Lutheran church, which still plays a large role here. Lord God of Sabaoth in Christiansted occupies the former Dutch Reformed Church; Holy Trinity in Frederiksted was built shortly after the town was founded.

340-713-9254

The Dutch Reformed church (Presbyterian) now has an new mid-island home. But these are just a few of the many (at last count over 150) churches on St. Croix, from Seventh-Day Adventist to Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, any many more. You will find that church attendance and activities are important to a large part of our population, and visitors are always welcome at services, often a high point in their experience of our island.

Galangal – 340-773-0076 As one approaches the 1729 House, the tan one across from Fort Christiansvaern Park, the Galangal sign, made from wine corks by a patron, is hardly visible from the street. Opening the aubergine door is almost magical as one steps inside an elegant white-table dining room filled with original paintings, and Indo-Colonial architectural elements. Sitting down at the cool, dry granite bar, one just knows their Martini is going to be ice cold and the red wine will be at 65 degrees. Galangal specializes in authentic modern Thai cuisine, combining traditional ingredients with international flavors and techniques. Freshness is the key to Galangal’s bold flavors and consistent quality. Spices from Vietnam and Singapore, curry pastes from Bangkok and unusual Asian vegetables grown in our own gardens give Galangal’s dishes their unique and authentic flavors. Even the soup is made à la minute. St. Croix’s #1 dining destination- (tripadvisor.com). Dinner 5:30 - 9:30. Closed Sunday and Monday.

Wine: Best Pick!

Angry Nate’s for Great Seafood on the Boardwalk!

DeLoach Vineyards Heritage Reserve Chardonnay and Pinot Noir by Anne Salafia

Sarah Ridgway knows a thing or two about wines. A level one Sommelier and Certified Wine Specialist, Ridgway runs the show at Dionysus Distributors. Previously, she worked at Hoffman Family Cellars in Sonoma County as Cellar Master & Wine Educator. She likes these wines for their value, accessibility and great taste. “DeLoach has been at the pinnacle of winemaking in the Russian River Valley since its inception,” said Ridgway. In 1973, Cecil DeLoach, a firefighter from San Francisco with a passion for wine, found ideal conditions in the Russian River Valley for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and pioneered winemaking there. Along came Jean-Charles Boisset whose family had farmed these grapes for generations in Burgundy. Boisset loved the Sonoma wine region, recognizing similarities to Burgundy. In 2003, he bought DeLoach Vineyards and has since implemented bio-dynamic farming there--a practice he favored in France. “Not only is bio-dynamic farming organic, it also considers the ethical and spiritual needs of the land, fruit and vines,” said Ridgway. “Rather than use a tractor to till the soil, you might use a large stock animal whose hooves add more air to the soil.” The Pinot Noir offers bright cherry flavors with cranberry accents and a trace of spice. Ridgway suggests pairing it with grilled salmon and a leek cream sauce. The Chardonnay boasts a nose of Asian pear and apricot with vanilla accents. Try it with bouillabaisse or mahi and mango chutney. Or drink them alone! www.stcroix thisweek .com

From the age of 14, Brian Mika has worked in the restaurant and food service business that, along the way, included Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia. Being a bustling tourist destination, his experience in Williamsburg helped launch him into the hospitality industry. To formalize a career and to explore kitchens and cuisines, Brian turned to the Culinary Institute of America, Hyde Park, NY where, in 1993, received a degree in Culinary Arts. The new degree, all his new knowledge of the food industry, plus perseverance, led Brian to receive wide recognition as a successful chef at hotels, restaurants, and ships for the next several years. Brian had an opportunity to move to St. Croix in 2002 and became chef at St. Tropez, a classic French restaurant in King Street in Frederiksted. Next he opened a restaurant at Carambola Beach Resort on the Northshore before being offered a chance to lease a wellequipped restaurant in Frederiksted on the waterfront; “Aqua West” was born. Through all this and the advent of Angry Nate’s, more and more Williamsburg friends helped in the effort, some even moving down here to be a part of it including old friend Chris Stone who partnered Brian in opening Angry Nate’s on the Christiansted

boardwalk, part of the Holger Danske Hotel complex. Chris has since left the reigns in Brian’s hands to wander the globe. Brian explains that “Angry Nate’s is a seafood house specializing in local fresh seafood, lobster, Mahi, Tuna, and Wahoo. Mostly, these fish are purchased directly from the sport fishing boats that line the dock jutting out from the boardwalk in front of the restaurant. We try to bring as much local fish and produce to the table nightly as we can. All entrees are paired with reasonably-priced, hand-picked wines. We work hard to bring you a great dining experience whenever you join us.” “Some highlights of our week include Wednesday nights when we offer live Jazz and a three-course Prime Rib dinner for only $23.50 which includes soup or a salad, Prime Rib au Jus with Green Beans, Baked Potato, and Apple Crisp for dessert. Also our ala carte Brunch is hugely popular with free-flowing champagne (essentially a bottomless glass)! Our biggest speciality of all—we’re always open 6am to 10pm! In the Summer, when you can’t remember who’s open and who’s closed, relax. We are always here for you. Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner!” Angry Nate’s Boathouse & Seafood Emporium 340-692-6283 www.angrynates.com August / September 2013 • Page 31

CHECK THE EVENTS CALENDAR FOR ART SHOWS & CLASSES DURING August & september!

Meet Cover Artist Christina Frederick Gasperi “I was born in an east coast town and my childhood was immersed in beachcombing, building sacred spaces in the woods, drawing letterforms and animals, reading voraciously, and watching my Christina, Luca, and Marina mother create Thomas Shelley stained glass in her studio. I love layers of textures, cycling and decaying back to their original elements through forces of nature. Many of my paintings meld my seminal obsessions together. I attended well-funded NY public schools in the 70s and 80s with excellent art teachers and facilities. Active in practically all the visual and performing arts as a child, I sold my first painting at age 16 and eventually entered the Communication Design department at Parsons School of Design in New York City. On the first day of typography class I met an intriguing 18 year old with dark eyes and a mop of curly hair who described a cattle ranch on a tiny Caribbean island where he was born. ‘Ah, Puerto Rico,’ I remember assuming.

pasture. Our design/management talents realigned to a frenzy of farm-building. One of the great things about a design education is its flexible application to all problems. Fences, farmstand, a greenhouse, rain catchment ponds, tool sheds and a small art gallery sprang up like lovely weeds from found objects and repurposed structures.

The ARTfarm is a way of life; a giant and demanding, beautiful and productive art installation in progress. We’ve grown sustainably raised food for enthusiastic customers for over 13 years. The act of thoughtful farming requires a level of creativity, intuition and faith that sometimes seems to monopolize all our creative energies. The same could be said for thoughtful parenting. But with the farm’s rhythms in a groove, Luca and I are both turning back to painting, now, finally.

Luca Gasperi turned out to be Italian, from an island I’d never heard of (St. Croix), an accomplished watercolorist who shared my love of nature and good food. A decade later he became my husband and co-creator of our beautiful daughter, and our family-run organic produce farm and art gallery, the ARTfarm, on that tiny island. We both spent many years working as design professionals in NYC, honing our project management skills and visual vocabularies. We became Greenmarket junkies, purchasing all of our food in Union Square and Grand Army Plaza from local truck farmers, when not exploring every affordable restaurant in the city. After I worked in Europe for two years and Luca followed his heart to a farming internship in upstate New York, we both realized the next big thing was to combine creative forces again and start a slower, more sustainable life on the tiny island. I arrived on St. Croix from NYC a few months after 9/11. Together we marketed and

managed Estate Southgate Farms, and produced several exhibitions of Luca’s artworks. I participated in group and solo exhibitions, documentary film work and freelance design, and wrote about the arts for local publications. Then motherhood took over. Our daughter was born just before we moved our farm operation from the north shore, where we’d established infrastructure over ten years, to ARTfarm on the south shore, where there was nothing but cattle

With time at such a premium, it’s terrifying to make art. There’s always the fear that the muse won’t appear, the inspiration or happy accident won’t strike, or that your techniques have gotten so rusty that the work will fail to please you. But it’s even more terrifying not to have an outlet for that energy. So I plant the creative seeds for myself and for my daughter. She’s already filling sketchbooks with trees and bugs, letters, mountains and princesses.”

Island Weddings Begin your life together on a beautiful island!

W

The Benefit of Research!

hat could be more romantic than beginning your life together on a beautiful island? Whether you say your vows on a spectacular hilltop, a white-sandy beach, or floating on a boat, our reflective turquoise waters will surround you for the occasion. St. Croix has the accommodations, caterers, ceremony and reception sites, churches, clothing, consultants, flowers, invitations, jewelry, photographers, planners, restaurants, and transportation to make it happen.

As you plan your wedding, you have to put your faith in your vendors hoping that on the day of everyone shows up, shows up on time, and delivers their service(s) as promised. I recently came across a story where a bride hired a vendor who did not meet her expectations in the trial runs leading up to her big day. On the day of her wedding she panicked trying to find a replacement but none was found and she was left to enlist her guests to fill in the large gap left by the unqualified vendor. No bride should ever have to go through this kind of trauma.

What do you do when the vendor you hired does not meet your expectations? Successful vendors go to great lengths to build and protect their reputations. Equally, they understand the power of word of mouth and social media. This is usually why these vendors charge so much more because they have proven results. This entire scenario could have been avoided completely by researching before hiring wedding vendors. They should have a website or at least a facebook page. They should be able to show you recent work and provide you with references and testimonials. If the vendor you want is out of your budget, ask for a more affordable recommendation in that category. Before money is exchanged and contracts are signed, be sure that this is the vendor with which you are willing to take a risk. I say this because things do and will happen during the course of your wedding journey with vendors, either trivial or dire. The more successful vendors make this process feel less like a risk and more like an investment but this kind of piece of mind usually comes with a price. In the end, all you want is for your wedding to be covered so you can avoid being the subject of a cautionary tale. For more info, planning tips, and resources visit www.vibridalguide.com Quiana L. Our Danish Connection

Live the Adventure: Become a National Geographic Diver! The PADI National Geographic Diver course takes the basic open water course to a higher level and gives you two more dives – one is learning more about navigation underwater, and and the other dive is learning about underwater environment. This course is more about adventure, conservation and exploration. By having the additional skill level in navigation it gives the diver more freedom to explore and to better observe the underwater environment. In 1926 National Geographic published the first color underwater photographs. Today with the PADI National Geographic Diver course you can follow in the footsteps of the world renown explorers. “I’m originally from Northern California,” says Adrian Rogers, “but was living in Spain for two years, studying Spanish and Spanish guitar before arriving on St. Croix seven years ago. It was a very random decision, actually, to move here. I’m an old friend of a local musician and immediately fell in love with the island when I came to visit. Partner, Ty McRae, on the other hand, “was born and raised a farm boy in the southern part of Idaho where all we did was hunt, fish, camp and enjoy the outdoors. After graduating from college, I wanted to start traveling, bought the cheapest ticket possible landing in St. Croix in 2008 and loving it!” “Before arriving on St. Croix, I really wasn’t into water sports,” Adrian admits. “I was more interested in hiking, mountain-biking and rock climbing. However, on arrival, I immediately pursued various water activities and found that I also loved SCUBA diving, sailing and kayaking.” Ty says, “Since I lived in the mountains for most my life, I didn’t get to see the ocean till my late teens. Once I came

here, I immediately fell in love with the idea that any time of the year or anytime of the day you can utilize the beautiful blue water.” Adrian and Ty met working together doing ecological and historical kayak tours in Salt River National Park and just wrapped up their second season with Bush Tribe Eco Adventures. They love that it keeps them outside enjoying, sharing and exploring St. Croix’s rich history and lush environment.

Student groups, marine-biologists, naturalists, and visitors go to Bush Tribe for fun, unique adventures. Most of the positive guest comments pertain to the level of knowledge and attention that their guides provide whether snorkeling the pier in Frederiksted, kayaking the nighttime bioluminescence, or hiking the tide pools. Adrian and Ty allow guests to build their own tour from a 2-hour excursion to a series of adventure days. Call or email through their website and they’ll assess your needs and put together a custom ‘adventure menu.’ For people who want to organize a unique and very organic event, they have a division called ‘Bush Vibe’ that allows them to use their campgrounds to provide a beautiful palmgrove setting with campfire, catering, libations and live-music entertainment! It appears that this company is quite diverse and flexible catering to a multitude of entertainment needs.

Buck Island Charters, with Captain Heinz and his son Carl, is one of the oldest charter boat companies sailing to Buck Island Reef National Monument. Teroro II, a 42’ trimaran, is the first commercially built boat by Gold Coast Yachts at Salt River and chartered by Captain Heinz. Carl followed his father’s passion, after sailing and competing in his youth and after helping to captain Teroro II to Buck Island for 16 years, and now has is own boat Dragonfly, a 38’ trimaran. He and his father love to share their local knowledge with the guests aboard and give them a very personalized snorkeling tour of Buck Island Reef. We are recommended by Fromer’s Tour Guide and sail from Green Cay Marina.

TRY THE FASTEST GROWING WATER SPORTS—STAND UP PADDLE SURFING & KITEBOARDING! Protecting Our Marine Environment

Part of the 17-mile East End Marine Park on St. Croix’s Northshore. Susan Curtis

The St. Croix East End Marine Park (STXEEMP) was established in 2003 to achieve its mission of protecting significant marine resources, promoting sustainability of marine ecosystems, and conserving and preserving significant natural and cultural areas for current and future generations. It includes 17 miles of shoreline from Green Cay to Point Udall and around to Great Pond Bay. See the St. Croix Road Map on Page 55 for Management Zones. Now the USVI’s first Marine Protected Area (MPA), the Park has been designated for protection because of its importance in protecting and restoring ecosystems, mitigating the effects of overuse, supplementing fishing catch through spillover outside its boundaries, and providing recreational opportunities enhancing the local economy. With a variety of habitats, including mangroves, salt ponds, sea grass beds, beaches and coral reefs and an amazing array of wildlife, the Park offers a range of recreational activities like camping, picnicking, snorkeling, diving, bird watching, kite boarding, paddle boarding or simply swimming with a great view. The 3rd Annual Stand-Up Paddle Board Race Fundraiser--Paddle for the East End Marine Park--will occur on Sunday, September 1 this year. Watch for location announcement or check the website. Races include pro, amateur, relay, kids, and kids-parents. The goal of the annual Stand Up Paddle Board Race is to raise awareness about the St. Croix East End Marine Park and our marine environment, promote sustainable recreational activities within the park, such as SUP, raise funds to further support The St. Croix East End Marine Park mission, and engage the community by introducing a new exciting event and activity.

Klima. Tider. Her som alle vegne, vær forsigtig.

Telefon. Se by- og økortene for at finde postkontorerne. Helligdage. Her fejrer man amerikanske helligdage foruden en hel del lokale. Christiansted National Historic Site Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park Saystem in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted,

St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.” Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors. Take two tours—“Free Gut” is the freed black neighborhood of Christiansted established by the Danish in 1748 and “Gallows Bay” is the fishing community that sustained Christiansted’s fish market for more than two centuries. Free Gut, $35., Gallows Bay, $15. Make Reservations with Eastern National Bookstore at the Scale House. 340-719-4091

Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of Christiansted at the site of the Old Scale House 1 on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. One section of the 1856 structure displays the scale used in former days to weigh barrels of rum and sugar. The other section holds a bookstore and gift shop as well as an information center about all things St. Croix. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service.

Fort Christiansvaern 3 was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appearance reflects the 1830’s period. Furnishings from that era are on display; also an exhibit on local military history. At the entrance admission tickets to the Fort and Steeple Building are sold ($3) and brochures available.

Open Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm, weekends 9 am to 5 pm. 2 hour parking available on site. The Steeple Building 4 across Hospital Street, formerly the Lutheran Church and dates from 1753. It houses a display documenting aspects of the religious history of St. Croix. Ask for opening hours at the Fort. Across Company Street lies the onetime Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse 5 , built in 1749. In its courtyard, slave auctions were formerly held. Government House 6 on King Street was in part the former home of a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. The former are open to the public (entrance at mid-building on King Street). The Virgin Islands Tourism office (open weekdays only) is downstairs fronting the Lutheran Church. The Lutheran Church 7 across Queen Cross Street on King Street, was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added. Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall 8 on the left corner, which holds both the tiny Apothecary Museum on Queen Cross Street, open anytime, and in the courtyard the Archaeological Museum, open only Saturdays 10 am-2 pm. Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market 9 , laid out in the original town plan from 1735, and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office. August / September 2013 • Page 57

CATCH A FREE JAZZ CONCERT AT THE FREDERIKSTED BANDSTAND AUG 16 & SEPT 20! Getting West St. Croix’ West End offers beautiful sandy, calm beaches, great snorkeling and wreck or pier diving, spectacular sunsets, and the lush subtropical forest. You can reach Frederiksted with its quaint, historic town architecture in several ways. The four-lane Melvin Evans Highway is your speediest route, if you are coming from the east. Most drivers take Queen Mary Highway (Centerline Road), which also takes you to the St. George Village Botanical Garden, the Cruzan Rum Factory, and Whim Plantation Museum, all just off the Queen Mary Highway.

Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park. The park contains a bronze bust of the renowned slave rebellion leader. The Oscar E. Henry Customs House was built in the 1800’s. The building is undergoing renovations. The Visitors’ Bureau, normally located here, has been temporarily moved to an upstairs location in the courtyard of a nearby building on Strand Street. The Freedom Fountain facing the pier was installed for the Emancipation 150th anniversary celebration. In a historic light blue building down a block is the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts. After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, the town was rebuilt in Victorian style. Victoria House on Strand Street and Apothecary Hall on King Cross Street between King and Queen Streets preserve the Frederiksted architecture of that time. Frederiksted is home to a number of historic churches, including St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Holy Trinity Lutheran Chruch, Friedensberg Moravian Church, and St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. The newly restored Old Danish School on Hospital Street and Market Street is a handsome building. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library, built in 1803. The Market Place is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted. There are ATMs at the Scotiabank and First Bank locations on Strand Street. After hours, swipe your card at the door to get inside. The Frederiksted waterfront is home to Sunset Jazz concerts, held the third Friday of the month from 5:30 to 8 p.m.. Admission is free to the public. A public beach with showers and bathrooms is next to Fort Frederik.

The rainforest can be explored by car, 4 WD (unpaved West Scenic Road can be impassable after heavy rains) or on horseback. Among area attractions are the Lawaetz Family Museum and lovely gardens at Estate Little La Grange, the impressive Estate Mt. ARTS in the U. S. Virgin Islands Part 8 in a series Excerpts from “Arts in the U. S. Virgin Islands” by Ruth S. Moore and David M. Hough of the Caribbean Research Institute of the College of the Virgin Islands, 1967, for the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts. THE DRUM, seconded by all the percussive instruments related to it, has been the dominant instrument, from the Bamboula drum from Africa to the steel drum from Trinidad. It has always called the dance, set the pattern for the dancers and it has accompanied the old traditional songs. Bamboula drums were made from hollowed logs covered with goat skin at one end. The strong beats are played by the hands and fingers on the skin while another player may produce counter-rhythms with stick at the open end. There were smaller drums of bamboo, and every other imaginable drumlike form was used including military trap drums. The scratch band used a flute or fife to carry the tune, a long bass instrument (created from a length of exhaust pipe after cars came to the Islands), and a gourd with serrated sides which was scratched with a wire-pronged stick to produce the rhythm. Violins and guitars were used in combination with other instruments and as solo instruments for singing and dancing. Puerto Ricans used guitars, but also the more complex cuatro with twelve strings and an ornate shape of violin-like curves. The tres was similar with fewer strings. The marimbula was a stringed bass instrument whose strings were often held in tension by the spring of an old victrola. The guiro, maracas, drums, and occasionally an accordion, completed the instrumental group. Puerto Ricans still enjoy traditional aguinaldo festivals when they gather to play and sing impromptu songs and “controversies” improvised on the spot to fit the music and rhyme. FOLK TALES have been the source of entertainment for centuries beyond memory. They came into the Virgin Islands from Europe and Africa and have been handed down orally from generation to generation. Among the most popular are the Anansi stories which tell of the exploits of a folk hero, a trickster, a spider whose name came from the language of the Ashanti people of West Africa. Called Bru Nansi (or Bro, Bur, Brer), Anansi is at home throughout the Caribbean. In our century he has become literate and is found in school books and anthologies. There is the story of “Bru Nansi’s Escape from Death” recounted in a mimeographed collection in the St. Thomas Public Library: (Once upon a time Bru Nansi asked for the hand of many young ladies but no one would accept him because they had heard of his badness. He finally persuaded one old lady to let him marry her daughwww.stcroix thisweek .com

ter by promising to be buried alive with the old lady if she should die before him. Soon after that she died and Bru Nansi sought Bru Lizard’s help. Bru Lizard demanded many flies in payment for his help at the funeral.) On the day of the funeral, Bru Lizard dressed in a black suit and went up into a tree. He ate so many flies that his belly hung on both sides of the limb. He went fast asleep. The ceremony on the corpse was performed and Bru Nansi shouted as loudly as he could, “Cover me up too! Throw dirt on me!” His noise finally waked Bru Lizard who said in a gross voice, “Ever since I made Heaven and Earth I never commanded the living to be buried with the dead.” Bru Nansi said, “Listen, listen, Papa God speaks!” . . . Every mourner screamed and ran, leaving Bru Nansi alone. Bru Nansi went home boasting to his wife that he would have been buried with her mother but Papa God, himself spoke. PERFORMANCES in meetings and gatherings have been going on throughout the settled history of the Virgin Islands. One refinement of the traditional gathering was the Tea Meeting. Held usually during the Christmas Holiday season, often in the country but also in the towns, the Tea Meetings traditionally charged a fee and ritually had different acts presented before a King, Queen, and Princess who presided in appropriate costume. A call master was present and a series of acts were performed, but the essential part of the performance was a dialogue by seasoned performers. Here is one Virgin Islander’s memory of Tea Meetings: Tea Meetings would be a discussion where men would get together to challenge each other’s knowledge of history and the various happenings of the day. I’ll give you a breakdown on a typical Tea Meeting.

Folk tales have been the source of entertainment for centuries beyond memory. They came into the Virgin Islands from Europe and Africa and have been handed down orally from generation to generation.

For months, men – and women, too – would discuss having a meeting at a meeting hall or some other place. You generally paid a fee to go in and the various participants would ask for the floor from the chairman. Each one would try to outdo the other, showing his eloquence and knowledge of some particular happening in history. The particular happening was arranged ahead of time. And, of course, one or two real slicksters, as we would call them today, would come up and discuss some particular happening that wasn’t on the agenda. As I recall, even in 1941 one guy gave a discussion about Julius Caesar – from when Caesar was born until the day he was stabbed. He discussed every battle – and remember these men were not lettered men. How they learned is almost a secret. Probably someone would read to them and they would memorize it. A great deal of preparation was required. On stage, the King, Queen and Court was all part of it. The real purpose of it was to bring out the newfound knowledge of these men. The rest was trapping and adornment. They went with the war. It couldn’t be done again without preparation and quick thinking. I remember one man who said: Mr. Speaker, Mr. Speaker, give me the floor And I promise you that I’ll say no more; So crack the music without any doubt, The last speaker’s mouth was like a water spout. St. Croix retains a relaxing pace even though cosmopolitan in many ways. We say, “ Good Morning” before beginning a conversation, say “no problem” and mean it, and celebrate lots of holidays without commercializing them. A few challenges might be not being able to find your favorite brand all the time, finding water scarce during dry spells (although you can buy it by the truckload), and erratic electricity (making generators popular along with the use of solar panels). Come and stay for a short or long time. Most of us wouldn’t live anywhere else!

Where’s the beef? On St Croix it’s Pasture-raised Senepol! In addition to the beautiful beaches, great scuba diving, beer drinking pigs and excellent rum, St. Croix is also known for its own unique breed of eco-friendly, gentle, hornless red beef cattle—the Senepol, now dispersed to tropical climates all over the planet.

Today, the SCBA recognizes over 500 breeders and more than 60,000 registered animals in its database, and Senepol ranches are thriving in 8 U.S. states and Australia, Paraguay, Colombia, Argentina, Panama, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Mexico, the Philippines, Zimbabwe, Brazil, and wherever tropically adapted production is needed. Lawaetz, currently serving on the board of the SCBA as Treasurer, is headed to Bogota, Colombia in July this year for the 36th Senepol Annual Convention.

Despite the fact that most beef consumed in the territory today is imported, up until the 1950s local farms were the source for all St. Croix residents in search of a good pot roast, steak or hamburger. Farming conditions on St. Croix can be harsh, with droughts, ticks, and poor quality pastures affecting “The carcass quality, mild dislivestock farmers. In the 1860s, position and ability to utilize some farmers raising cattle on poor quality forages have made the dry, desert-like South shore the Senepol very attractive to of St. Croix tried to make their cattle producers in tropical encattle farms more profitable by vironments,” explains Dr. Bob importing cattle breeds that Godfrey, Director and Professor were more resistant to heat, of Animal Science at the Unidisease, and were able to thrive versity of the Virgin Islands’ Agriand reproduce on poor qualcultural Experiment Station. “Over ity, dry pasture. “Then as now, it the years there has been a lot of was essential that cattle living in St. interest in Senepol cattle as an alterCroix’s rough conditions be selected native to other breeds for use in hot, carefully over generations, for traits that humid climates.” Along with a team of would make them affordable and efficient animal science professionals (including a to manage,” explains Hans Lawaetz, owner of direct descendant of Bromley Nelthropp), Dr. St. Croix’s Annaly Farms and Meat Market, 3rd genGodfrey runs the Castle Nugent herd, donated You ng S dfrey to the University by Caroline Gasperi in 2006, currently enepo eration Senepol rancher, and founding member of the l Bull. Over the span of a century or more, these Crucian cattle producers managed to remove the animals’ tendency to sprout horns, increase the average weights of the cattle and to produce uniformly red, short-haired offspring. They selected animals with placid, calm dispositions, which made them easier to move around and less damaging to fencing and workers. They improved the cattle’s ability to produce milk for faster growing and maturing offspring (a trait known in the cattle industry as “maternal efficiency”), and selected for their ability to birth their offspring in the wild without any veterinary care – all while eating dry, sparse, non-irrigated brush that even goats would sneer at. These farmers were creating what in today’s eco-trendy world would be known as a “sustainable” cattle breed. In the 1950s, the Nelthropp family shifted into dairy cattle, and the marketing-savvy Lawaetz family helped to name and trademark the “Senepol” breed and create a registry for pure-bred Senepol cattle. In the late 1970s, with global beef consumption up and demand high, cattle producers in the sunbelts of the US, Brazil, Central America and other far-flung equatorial corners of the globe purchased full cargo planes worth of live Senepol cattle from ranchers on St. Croix, including the Lawaetz’s Annaly Farms, Henry Nelthropp, Sr., Oscar Henry, and the Gasperi family’s Castle Nugent Farms, to start their own Senepol herds. (Today, artificial insemination practices have mostly eliminated the shipping of live Senepol around the world. With bulls weighing in at around 2,000 pounds and cows around 1400 to 1500 pounds, they are expensive to fly!) www.stcroix thisweek .com

In the end, the product has to be tasty. “Carcass quality” refers to scientific characteristics of the meat: lean, tender, flavorful beef. “With Senepol cattle, high carcass quality can be achieved by feeding the animals grass only, their natural diet,” explains Kiko Gasperi, manager of Castle Nugent Farms for over 40 years. Most beef purchased in a supermarket must be fed corn, soybeans, and other commodity grains in feedlots where they get little exercise, to achieve high fat marbling and rapid weight gain. It can be argued that feedlot produced beef is not as healthy for you as locally produced grass-fed (so-called pastured) beef, which has higher levels of omega-3s and other nutrients. Cooking pastured beef requires a slightly different approach than Grade A USDA beef. Without all the fat content, the moisture and tenderness in grass-fed beef needs to be more carefully maintained in the cooking by searing the outside of steaks before cooking at a lower heat, by stewing or roasting in a Dutch oven, by marinating, and by ‘aging’ the meat in the refrigerator for several days prior to cooking. “In the early days of Annaly Market, when electric refrigeration was a new technology, people didn’t trust aged beef,” said Lawaetz. “They expected to purchase beef that was slaughtered just hours earlier. But the most tender beef was that which was allowed to hang in the meat locker for a few days.” Aging meat is a well-documented ‘secret’ of top restaurant chefs whose clientele demand sustainably grown, pastured meats.
