From Our President
On May 5 Dr. Leroy Staggers, academic dean, presented President Richardson with a service award in honor of his fortieth year as college president during the college’s annual Faculty/Staff luncheon.
Satisfactory academic progress is crucial to the continued success of any institution of higher learning. This is the key to improved retention and graduate rates. At Morris College, it is necessary that this theme percolates and permeates all that we do to help students succeed. The maintaining of an excellent institution, in every regard, is a responsibility that belongs to everybody connected with the institution. Take the residence hall directors, for example. They must continue using their influence and guidance to assure the young men and women living in their buildings that residence halls are students’ home away from home. The dining hall staff plays an important role because their services are necessary in helping to see that students are satisfied. Trustees and alumni of the institution, also, play a great part in helping to move the institution forward and to enhance its reputation as an academic center of higher
learning. Our Baptist family and friends play an important role, as well. The federal government, faced with its own financial limitations, is demanding more accountability and positive returns on its investment. The rippling effects of economic conditions have resulted in budget cuts and the elimination of academic programs and other valuable learning opportunities. We are all interconnected and just as important to and responsible for the development of students as are their professors. The education of students is a responsibility that must be taken seriously by everyone who is connected with Morris College. By working together, we can ensure satisfactory academic progress for the large majority of our students. We can automatically achieve the goals of higher retention rates, higher graduation rates and lower student loan default rates. We can ensure the future success of both our students and our beloved institution. This is my 41st year as president of Morris College and I am convinced more than ever that working together ensures that standards will continue to be met, that those students who “Enter to Learn . . .” will succeed and do well in graduate and professional schools and in the job market and that they will do well through services rendered to their country, their communities and their families as they “Depart to Serve.” The college is doing many positive things to prepare young people to move effectively into meaningful and productive careers once they receive their degrees, and we urge your generous support of this year’s Fall Harvest Rally. This rally gives all of us the chance to show how much we appreciate what Morris College is doing. College News The Fall Harvest Worship Service and Rally, sponsored by the Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina, will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. in the Garrick-Boykin Human Development Center. The keynote speaker for this year’s major fundraising event is the Reverend Dr. James Perkins who was recently elected as the 20th president of the Progressive National Baptist Convention, Inc. An internationally recognized minister, Dr. Perkins was ordained to Gospel Ministry in 1974 and has served as pastor of Greater Christ Baptist Church in Detroit, MI for thirty-two years. He earned the Doctor of Ministry degree from United Theological Seminary, Dayton, Ohio (1990, Samuel DeWitt Proctor Fellow). Dr. Perkins has established various initiatives to uphold his belief that the church has a responsibility to serve both the spiritual and temporal needs of the surrounding community. In 1992, he founded the Fellowship Nonprofit Housing Corporation as a vehicle for community economic development. In 1993, he responded to the educational options available for young, urban African American males by instituting the Benjamin E. Mays Male Academy to address the crisis. This Kindergarten through sixth grade Christian school for boys operated for Dr. Luns C. Richardson was
recognized with a proclamation during the Annual Call Me MISTER Spring Summit hosted on the campus on April 5, 2014. Rudolph Wheeler, director of the college’s Call Me MISTER Program, accepted the proclamation in Dr. Richardson’s absence and later presented it to him on April 24th. Recognized for his “vision, determination and faith in the idea that young black men could change the course of history by standing at the

17 years and positively impacted the future of hundreds of males. This K-6th grade Christian school for boys operated for 17 years and positively impacted the future of hundreds of males. In the spring of 2006, a $10 million development called Providence Place was constructed to provide fifty single family homes for low and middle income families. Dr. Perkins, an internationally recognized minister, fulfills speaking engagements at churches, seminaries, and conferences across the United States and abroad. He is the author of Building Up Zion’s Walls: Ministry for Empowering the African American Family and Playbook for Christian Manhood: 12 Key Plays for Black Teen Boys, published by Judson Press (Valley Forge, Pennsylvania). His other writings, as well as profiles of his ministry and details of his community activism, have been included in both secular and Christian publications such as Black Enterprise, USA Today, Ebony, American Baptist, The African-American Pulpit, several edited works published by Judson Press and the best-selling Success Runs in Our Race by George Fraser. Dr. Perkins has served as 1st Vice President of the Progressive National Baptist Convention, Inc. and as president of the Michigan Progressive Baptist Convention. He is a member of the Detroit Baptist Pastors Council, Detroit Chapter NAACP, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and the Steering Committee of the Detroit Jobs Alliance. He also serves on the board of the Micro-Enterprise Fund and the board of trustees at Wiley College in Marshall, TX. Dr. Perkins is the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions including the Benjamin E. Mays Award, Howard University, Washington, DC; the Charles Andrew Hill Achievement Award, Michigan Progressive Baptist Convention; the Michigan Chronicle’s Pastor’s Salute Award and the Outstanding Church Leadership Award, American Baptist Churches of Michigan. Dr. Perkins is married to Linda Adkins Perkins and is the father of two daughters and the grandfather of one grandson.

Richardson Day on the occasion of its spring summit in Sumter, SC.” Dr. Roy Jones is the executive director for the Eugene T. Moore School of Education’s Call Me MISTER Program at Clemson University and its network of 17 SC institutions that host the program.
Dare to Live: Understanding Terminal Illness, an encouraging and insightful work by J. L. Carter, was recently published by Tank Publishing, Baltimore, MD. Dr. Carter tells how persons who are terminally ill can navigate their way through perpetual “fear of the unknown and constant worry” to the discovery of an “inner strength to stand tall.” Dr. Carter holds a B.S. degree in Biology and Chemistry from Morgan State University, Baltimore, MD, the M.Div. degree from the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Religion, Virginia Union University, Richmond, VA and the D.Min degree from the United Theological Seminary, Dayton, OH. He is a member of the college’s board of trustees and is the senior pastor of Ark Church in Baltimore, MD.
Local businessman, Mr. Ben E. Griffith, Jr., and wife, Deloris Griffith, recently established a $10,000 scholarship in memory of his parents, the late Reverend Ben E. and Margaret Mayfield Griffith. “Although we did not attend Morris College,” Mr. Griffith said, “my wife, Deloris, and I have great respect for the college.” Mr. Griffith’s mother was a 1947 Morris graduate. “She would be absolutely awestruck if she were to visit her college today,” he said, “and see all the positive improvements made during the tenure of Dr. Richardson.” The Ben E. and Margaret Mayfield Griffith Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to a student majoring in English. Mr. Griffith, a State Farm Insurance agent in Sumter, SC, earned the Bachelor of Arts and the Masters degrees from Clemson University.
Dr. Lucille S. Whipper, a former member of the board, was honored during a “roast and toast” on March 29, 2014. The event, sponsored by the Lowcountry District Missionaries, was held at the Alfred Williams Community Center in North Charleston. Dr. Luns C. Richardson attended the event and reflected upon Dr. Whipper’s commitment to educational empowerment. Noting her years of distinguished service and celebrated contributions, he applauded her for having served as a remarkable trustee of the college, an outstanding president of the Woman’s Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina and for continuing to be a loyal friend. He also joined her to the ranks of other distinguished women such as Mary McLeod Bethune, Eleanor Roosevelt, Rosa Parks, Mabel K. Howard and Modjeska Monteith Simkins. Dr. Whipper was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters in 1989. She is the widow of the Rev. Dr. Benjamin D. Whipper who adamantly supported the college as a Baptist leader, pastor and board member.

Dr. Luns C. Richardson, who retired after 56 years as pastor of the
Thankful Baptist Church in Bamberg, SC, was presented with a resolution by members of the Bamberg County Council for his faithful and dedicated service to his congregation and the community. Dr. Richardson began his pastoral ministry at Thankful on the fourth Sunday in April 1958 on a trial basis until a permanent pastor could be found. What he thought would have lasted four or five months lasted more than five decades. The event honoring Dr. Richardson took place during the Bamberg County Council meeting on August 11, 2014 in the courtroom of the Bamberg County Courthouse and was attended by members of county council, Thankful Baptist Church and the Bamberg community. “I am flattered that they wish to recognize me,” Richardson said. “Their resolution, in honor of 56 years of service to the Thankful Baptist Church as pastor, is a recognition I shall always remember with great gratitude.”

Sumter’s own Morris College welcomed more than 350 freshmen this Saturday. The teenagers and their families started their day on the private school’s campus at the Garrick-Boykin Human Development Center. Here they learned more about residential life, financial aid, health services and more. Then with packed suitcases and carts piled high, they moved into their dorm rooms. While some came from as far away as Michigan and Chicago, others came from towns across South Carolina. Charles Freeman is from Holly Hill and came

to Morris on a baseball scholarship. “It’s going pretty good,” he said about moving in. “It’s interesting to see new faces.” His grandmother, Mary Freeman, also of Holly Hill, came with him. “I’m so happy,” she said. “He’s a good boy. He deserved to do something with his life.” His brother, Ray Capers, didn’t go to college. “That’s why I’m so glad he’s doing it, taking off and going to college,” Capers said. “I’m very proud of my little brother. I came all the way from Miami to witness this. I know he’s happy, and the whole family is happy for him.”
But he did more than watch. He also helped the future Hornet carry stuff into this new room. Across campus, Jesa Parker from Orangeburg moved into the women’s freshman residence hall. “I like the location, and it’s a real nice school,” she said. “They made me feel at home.” Her cousin, Joseph Guignard, and her mom, Rod Hamilton, helped her settle. “It’s been good,” Hamilton said. “Registration was real quick.” Her daughter had a lot of her paperwork
completed beforehand, she said. Orientation leaders, students who are now in their sophomore year or higher, were also on hand to help the new ones carry stuff up stairs, hold doors and give directions. “It’s good to get to meet them, and it’s a good way to give back,” said Adonis Valdez, a senior. For Eniya Edwards helping out brought back fond memories. “I remember being excited,” the senior said. Her fellow orientation leader and senior, Alesia Nesmith, agreed. “It’s cool to think they may feel the same way,” she said. Founded in 1908, Morris College is an historically black, coeducational, liberal arts college, operated by the Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina. It is currently the only residential college in Sumter.

Convocation Begins Assembly tradition Morris College held its first and formal assembly on Thursday, September 4, 2014 at 10 a.m., in the Garrick-Boykin Human Development Center. The Annual Fall Convocation marks the official start of the 2014-2015 academic year. The convocation message was delivered by the college’s ninth president, Dr. Luns C. Richardson, who gave an overview of what Morris College does to benefit students and enhance workforce development. With the captivation and magnetism of a Franklin D. Roosevelt “fireside chat,” Dr. Richardson talked about programs the college has that prepare young people to “move effectively into meaningful and productive careers once they have received their degrees.” These programs are so designed because the college, as defined by its mission statement, is a “liberal arts and career-focused institution awarding baccalaureate degrees in the arts and sciences and in career-based professional fields.” Based on total enrollment last fall, the five largest programs are business administration, criminal justice, biology, teacher education and health science. Dr. Richardson highlighted the significance of each program and the kinds of studies students can obtain. He admonished the freshmen saying, “You should start thinking already about what you need to study and what
you need to do to reach your goal.” The next five most popular academic programs at the college are sociology, mass communication, recreation administration, mathematics and pastoral ministry. Students majoring in these programs also benefit from intellectual development and career preparation. Dr. Richardson also reminded students of articulation agreements the college has with other institutions. “Those students who specifically wish to enter an engineering program,” he stated, “Morris College maintains articulation agreements with engineering programs at the University of South Carolina, Clemson University and North Carolina A&T State University that allow students to take two years of pre-engineering at Morris College, followed by two more years at the cooperating university to receive the engineering degree.” Established in 1908, the college has expanded its academic programs while remaining true to its specific purpose of training teachers and preachers. Its pastoral ministry major enrolled 16 students last year. Graduates will seek work as pastors, assistant pastors or go on to graduate school to receive advanced training. There are also a small number of students who major in Christian education. These graduates will use

their training to work as educators within the church. The college has additional programs that relates to career development. Organizational Management, a program designed for individuals 25 years and older, is one. Anyone having previously completed at least 60 hours of college credit may be eligible to enroll in the program and pursue a B.S. degree in Organizational Management. Students attend classes one night per week for four hours and complete courses within a two year period. The other program is the Army ROTC. Cadets who successfully complete the college’s degree requirements and the army’s military requirements are commissioned as 2nd Lieutenants in the U. S. Army. Since its inception in 1985, the army has commissioned 52 2nd Lieutenants at Morris College. Seven of those officers have reached the rank of colonel. The president concluded his “fireside chat” with his “Richardson advice to students” to encourage them to start off running academically. Annual commencement convocation
On Saturday, May 3, 2014, hundreds gathered in the Sumter County Exhibition Center for the One Hundred Third Annual Baccalaureate Commencement Convocation. The convocation address was delivered by Dr. Walter M. Kimbrough, seventh president of Dillard University. Members of the Morris College Board of Trustees and President Richardson conferred a total of one hundred fifty-two baccalaureate degrees to members of the Class of 2014.

What you see in a forensics lab on television’s CSI and NCIS every week might be flashy enough to keep you coming back. But if you have a serious interest in forensics and the criminal justice system, Morris College’s Forensic Center is probably the closest you’ll get to high-technology forensics equipment that may be exaggerated for television but is just as interesting in its own right. According to Dr. Jacob Butler, chairman of

the Division of Social Sciences for the college, many colleges and universities offer a forensics program, but those degree programs are sometimes included under the umbrella of the natural sciences departments. Morris College, however, has a standalone facility for criminal forensics at the undergraduate level, which allows its students a close look into the forensics world using updated equipment along with textbooks to
round out its curriculum. The Forensic Center houses classrooms that can comfortably accommodate 40 students but normally only have about 15 to 25 students per class and also includes multiple labs for fingerprint, arson, DNA and ballistics analysis. “You’re not going to find a free-standing building with separate labs for individual criminal forensic studies,” Butler said. Morris started the criminal justice program

in the early 1990s, and it is the second-largest degree program on campus with 90 declared majors this academic year. The Forensic Center was constructed in 2010 and was built with a combination of a Bureau of Justice grant and Morris College resources. Butler, who has been with Morris College for almost 15 years, said that through the years, educators at the college saw that the criminal justice field was demanding more and more representatives and employees with degrees, and they wanted Morris to be one of the colleges that prepared students to meet
those demands. “We saw that criminal justice continued to grow and change over time,” Butler said. “Technology was changing, and it demanded an increase in the amount of employees who were college educated and trained in forensics.” Director of the Forensic Center Carlotta C. Stackhouse, who trained at the FBI Academy and has been with Morris since 2011, said TV might be what initiates some students’ interest in criminal justice, but they also have a genuine interest in becoming a part of law enforcement. “I think television has something
to do with it, but the science behind it all is unmistakable, and some people already have an interest in law enforcement, or they are just interested in seeking the truth,” said Stackhouse, who retired as a major after 25 years with State Law Enforcement Division. With Stackhouse and other faculty’s hands-on approach to studying criminal justice and forensics, students at Morris College quickly learn that the embellished images they see on TV every day are sensationalized. However, with Stackhouse’s crime scene scenarios tied in with curriculum, they begin to learn to collect and analyze evidence as they would in a realistic crime scene - a method she said helps them and makes them more comfortable and aware of proper procedures in future careers. “I realized when I was going through college that I learned a lot more when it was hands on,” said Stackhouse. “So if they get to touch the equipment and learn to use it, they won’t be afraid to use it and won’t say, ‘I’ve seen it in a textbook’ and never had the chance to use them.” Morris College has also made a number of partnerships with local law-enforcement agencies including Sumter County Sheriff’s Office and the S.C. Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services. The college’s emphasis on real-life scenarios in its criminal justice program is for good reason. Multiple studies show the incessant growth in areas such as the medical and criminal justice fields, with an increased demand for more skilled and properly trained patrol
officers, paralegals and crime scene investigators. Through the partnerships, high-tech equipment,
instruction and the required internship opportunities, Butler said they’re making every attempt to make students more marketable after graduation - many students pursue careers in law enforcement or attend graduate or law school. Stackhouse added that with the training and education they receive at Morris, students are able to make an immediate impact with their chosen lawenforcement agencies. “We want to continue to build on partnerships with external agencies and continue to increase the number of program offerings as needs change,” Butler said. “We want to improve and know how we can be a resource to the larger community and enhance Sumter County.”

Closing exercises were held for the college’s Ministerial Extension Certificate Centers on April 23, 2014 in the Neal-Jones Auditorium. Forty-three students received their certificates of completion. The convocation sermon was delivered by Dr. Bryant Scott Cheek, Sr., a graduate of Morris College, a member of the board of trustees and the president of the South Carolina Baptist Congress of Christian Education. He earned the D.Min degree from United Theological Seminary, Dayton, OH and serves as pastor of the Springfield Missionary Baptist Church, Laurens, SC.

Charles B. Jackson, Sr. was honored by the Columbia Urban League during its Annual Fund Campaign and Equal Opportunity Day Dinner on October 23, 2014 at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. Dr. Jackson, senior pastor of West Columbia’s Brookland Baptist Church and chairman of the Morris College Board of Trustees, received the David Wallace Humanitarian Award for his leadership beyond the walls of the church sanctuary in providing more than 60 community-empowering ministries.
Upwardly Bound and still going Upward Bound, a Federal TRiO program, turns 50 years old in 2014. This program was one of the first of several federal college-access programs known as TRiO because initially only three such programs existed nationwide. The Office of Economic Opportunity initiated Upward Bound as an experimental program to help low-income, first-generation students get a college education. This program began as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty in 1964. Upward Bound partners colleges with challenged and under-resourced high schools to expose students to college and prepare them for the challenge of higher education. Students selected to participate in this program receive instruction in college readiness, literature, composition, mathematics, a foreign language and science during the regular academic school year and during a six-week summer session where
students reside on a college campus that is designed to prepare them for college life. Morris College has hosted an Upward Bound program for at least fortyfive years. The current program is funded to serve 92 students from three surrounding counties, Sumter, Lee and Clarendon. Today, there are Upward Bound programs in all of the 50 states and its territories that are located in community agencies, technical schools, colleges and universities. The value of programs like Upward Bound cannot be measured in terms of its effectiveness in preparing students for a strong highly-educated and competent workforce and a global market place.
Vandroth Backus was recently honored at two separate events applauding him for his many years of dedicated service and for his sacrifices and unselfish contributions toward the betterment of humanity. On Sunday, June 8, 2014, Dr. Backus was honored at Monumental Baptist Church, the church he serves as pastor, during a dedication ceremony for the “Reverend Dr. Vandroth Backus Way.” Named in his honor was a portion of roadway on Oakland Avenue that begins at its intersection with Norfolk Street and ends at its intersection with Wilson Road, in the City of Florence. On Wednesday, October 15, 2014, U.S. Congressman James E. Clyburn presented Dr. Backus with the Congressional Gold Medal. He received the highest honor Congress bestows on civilians for his service as a Montford Point Marine. Montford Point was the segregated basic training facilities at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina for African Americans recruited into the Marine Corps during World War II. The presentation took place in the congressman’s district
office in Columbia, SC. Congressman Clyburn is quoted as saying, “(T)he men and women serving in the armed services today are able to achieve what they are able to achieve because of the tremendous sacrifices and ... indignities that you suffered.” The college’s distinguished alumnus also served his country during the Korean War. The first black police officer to serve on the Florence Police Department, Dr. Backus has received many awards and honors for his unselfish contributions and sacrifices made to help uplift humanity including the key to the City of Florence, the Trailblazer Award of the South Carolina House of Representatives, the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity from Morris College and the Outstanding Alumnus Minister Award from the Morris College National Alumni Association. A retired educator, a past moderator of the Pee Dee Baptist Association and a former member of the college’s board of trustees, Dr. Backus is the founding pastor of the Monumental Baptist Church in Florence and the owner of Backus Funeral Home.

With community leaders, state representatives, alumni and current students in attendance, Morris College officially dedicated its new residence halls and recognized and thanked Dr. Solomon Jackson Jr. for his $10 million contribution during a ceremony Wednesday morning. The building - the first coed dormitory on campus - will be named after Dr. Daisy Belton Alexander and Dr. Lewis P. Graham Sr. on the men’s side and Mrs. Annie Mae Jones Bowman and Mrs. Audree Adamsom Clark on the women’s side. “We’re here today because God has been extraordinary in his favor to Morris College,” said Dr. Charles B. Jackson Sr., chairman

of the college’s board of trustees. “Driving onto the campus of Morris College we see our contributions making this work and becoming the best institution. I have every confidence that greater days are ahead of us at Morris College. This is just another step to Morris College, not becoming one of, but the premiere four-year college.” Solomon Jackson, also a Morris College graduate and a member of the college’s board of trustees, contributed the money for the construction of the residence halls in 2010 after winning the lottery, and the building has been open for student use since fall 2013. With women on one side and men on the other side of the building,
the residence halls have 74 units each with two students per room - housing close to 300 of the college’s students. Miss Morris College 2014-15 Khanisha Moore described the new housing as “a comfortable home away from home.” The names of each side of the residence halls have been placed in front of the separate entrances. However, the on the buildings at a later date as the school was unable to get the names up because of inclement weather. During the ceremony, President Dr. Luns C. Richardson said some were initially concerned about the building, but it was quickly explained that in structure, the residence halls would be coed but with
two separate entrances and different areas for men and women. Richardson also commended Construction Dynamics for its work on making the dormitory exactly what the school wanted along with doing great work on other construction projects on campus in previous years. “We announced it would be a dormitory for men and women, and they nearly fainted because it’s a Baptist school,” Richardson said jokingly. “But we had to explain that boys are one side and girls are on the other side. You (Construction Dynamics) have not left anything undone. I want to compliment you on all the buildings you have done on this campus. You’ve done a perfect job.” For the greetings and remarks, Jackson
quoted Matthew 7:7, “ask and it shall be given ...” stating that he and many supporters, when asked, are dedicated to giving back to the college. “To God be the glory for the position he has put us in. Morris College must keep on keeping on,” Jackson said. “Even the man with a little bit will see that Morris College keeps on growing and growing.” The Rev. James Blassingame, president of the Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina, and Audrey Neal, president of the Woman’s Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina, thanked Jackson for his contribution. Also in attendance were state Rep. David Weeks, D-Sumter, Sumter School District board member
Barbara Jackson, family members of those honored and Mayor Joe McElveen - who said improvements to Morris College have been noticeable to the community since Richardson became president 40 years ago. “As Morris improves here, I hope you’re going to see over the next two or four years, it’ll continue on past Morris College (into downtown),” McElveen said. “I hope to also make Morris a more visible gem in Sumter County.”

Morris College has received additional bequests that will be of tremendous support. The college received a bequest from the estate of Mrs. Thomasena Hughes Peterson in the amount of $20,000. Mrs. Peterson, an alumna, was president of the Hartsville-Darlington Alumni Chapter. Her illustrious career in the Darlington County School System touched the lives of numerous students for almost four decades. After retirement, she continued tutoring students, free of charge, in her home. She loving gave of herself to her community as an educator and churchwoman. She passed away December 17, 2013. A gift of $5,329.42 was received from the estate of Bobby Leroy Brisbon. The Reverend Dr. Brisbon was an exceptional and distinguished educator. During his 27 years of unselfish service to Morris College, he served as chairperson of the Division of Education and director of Teacher Education. He was affiliated with several fraternal and honor societies. He was a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army and an ordained minister. Dr. Brisbon passed away in 2011. Morris College has received a cash bequest of $10,000 from the estate of Henriette Lenore Dupree Crutchfield of Nashville, TN. Mrs. Crutchfield passed away November 26, 2013 in Nashville, TN. The youngest child born to the Reverend Henry Dalton Dupree and Mrs. Paralee Edith Garrick Dupree, she grew up in Sumter, SC and was a graduate of the historic Lincoln High School. Mrs. Crutchfield pursued her dream of becoming a teacher by earning her BA from West Virginia State College, her MA from Indiana University and her PhD in English from the University of Michigan. Her educational career began, following the completion of her doctorate studies, at Virginia State College as an instructor of English, an assistant director of opera workshop and a director of speech clinic. Mrs. Crutchfield relocated to Nashville, TN in 1964 where her career continued at Fisk University as an assistant professor of speech, drama and English. She later joined the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools in 1968 where she devoted the remainder of her professional career as an educator and teacher of gifted education, speech, drama and Crutchfield English. The gift from Mrs. Crutchfield’s estate was credited to the Paralee Garrick Dupree Memorial Scholarship which was established in honor of her mother who passed away in September of 1995. Her mother studied at Morris College and was a former teacher and librarian at the college. “This generous gift” said President Luns C. Richardson “speaks highly of Mrs. Crutchfield’s strong belief in education and of her dedication to assist young people in obtaining higher education.” The widow of Mr. Rucker C. Crutchfield, Jr. and the granddaughter of Dr. James Peter Garrick, the fourth president of Morris College, Mrs. Crutchfield is survived by her sister, Mrs. Florence Arne’ Dupree Prince, other relatives and friends.

Student leaders for 2014-2015 were installed on April 2, 2014 during the academic year’s last assembly. Rev. Eliza E. Black, interim dean of Student affairs, installed the student leaders of classes, clubs and organizations and challenged them to “serve with commitment and dignity.” Student Government Association Officers were installed by President Luns C. Richardson. His challenge, as the installing officer, was for every officer to give of their “talents and abilities in worthy service to the ideals of Morris College.” The newly installed SGA officers are: Adonis O. Valdez, president; Derwin J. Platt, firstvice president; Travares D. Scott, second-vice president; Tereika G. Grooms, secretary; Aryan H. Sparks, assistant secretary; Lance E. As part of the CAPSTONE experience, the most outstanding presentations are recognized during the last assembly of the academic year. The purposes of Delta Mu Delta are to promote higher scholarship in training for business and to recognize and reward scholastic attainment in business subjects.
On September 16, the Division of Education announced two, Danzel Capers and Betty Geddings, have been admitted into its Teacher Education Program. Capers, of Salters, is a junior elementary education major. He is a member of the Morris College chapter of the Student-South Carolina Education Association and Call Me MISTER. Geddings, of Paxville, is a senior early childhood education major who serves as president of the college’s SSCEA chapter. There are currently six candidates admitted to the program.

On the evening of October 17, Khanisha Denise Moore was officially crowned Miss Morris College 2014-2015 during corontation, which is a formal affair hosted annually by the Morris College Student Government Association. Moore, who was raised in Norwalk, Connecticut, is a senior criminal justice major with a minor in sociology. Several queens and their escorts represented a number of classes, clubs, and organizations who made up the royal court along with the Ladies-in-Waiting and the queen’s attendants. Eniya Edwards and Imani Gibson-Aubry are the first and second attendants, respectively.
The Student Government Association lead a stop the violence initiative in which they asked the campus community to join them in an effort to “pray as a family” and take a stand against violent crimes. A moment of silence was also a part of the initiative in memory of those who lost their lives to crime.
The 2014 SCICU Independent College Day at the statehouse on April 9 was attended by more than 100 students and staff from 16 SCICU member institutions. Senator Darrell Jackson of Columbia who was honored as the 2014 SCICU Legislative Champion. Morris College and North Greenville University were recognized as the top two producers in the legislative letter-writing campaign.

Sigma Xi awards outstanding research On April 4, 2014 sixteen Morris College students and three faculty members traveled to Trident Technical College in Charleston, SC to attend the annual meeting of the South Carolina Academy of Science. Four students competed in Biology (Cellular and Field) and two competed in Mathematics. The Biology contenders were: Yvonne Wright, Shaquille Jackson, Cory Wright and Shameka Carter. The Mathematics contestants were: Wesley Alexander and Fabian Maple. Our students competed, in their respective areas, with undergraduate researchers from USC, South Carolina State University and the College of Charleston. Cory Wright, who conducted his research with Dr. Chandralaka Puligilla at MUSC, won the “Outstanding Undergraduate Research” award in Cellular Biology. The title of his project was “The Role of Casein Kinase-1 Activity in the Auditory Sensory Cell Patterning.” This research gives insight to the functioning of the Organ of Corti in the process of hearing, and
may lead to the development of implements that will aid the hearingimpaired. Wesley Alexander, who conducted his research with his mentor Joshua Cooper at USC, won the same award in mathematics. The title of his presentation was “Computational Complexity of Enumerating Linear Extensions,” which sheds light on the complexity and perhaps future application of POsets to computer and cybersecurity technology. Each of the two winners received a $100 monetary award provided by the South Carolina Academy of Science and Sigma Xi, an Honorary Research Society. The summer research was supported by a four-year grant provided by the United States Department of Energy-Environmental Management. Both students and their research mentors at MUSC and USC were honored in a Sigma Xi award banquet held at The Citadel in Charleston, SC in April.

Throughout the month of October, the Lady Hornets Volleyball Team wore their pink uniforms in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. On October 2, they encouraged the campus community to follow suit by wearing pink to their first home game of the month against the Voorhees College Lady Tigers. The Lady Hornets came out strong to win the first match 25-15, no contest. In the second match both teams started slow, but the Lady

Hornets would pull off a close 25-21. In the third match, the Lady Tigers defended well with a 22-15 lead. In another close call, The Lady Hornets stormed back to limit the lead by two points (22-20) before losing the match 25-22. As the forth match approached, the pressure and focus shifted and the Lady Hornets buckled down to make the fourth match the final one. With a strong 15-10 lead halfway through the match, the Lady Tigers bounced back for a 22-22 tie. With the crowd screaming and cheering them on to victory, the Lady Hornets would win the fourth match 25-23 for a final 3-1 game victory. Coach Glenda C. Fulwood knew going into the game Voorhees would be a challenging matchup. “I expected to win three straight games not go to four with close margins, but I have to give them credit they defended well … and although we were in spurts, I am proud of how the team pulled together for the victory.” The Lady Hornets ended the 2014 season on October 28. Aryan Sparks is a senior mass communications major from Bronx, New York. He currently serves as assistant secretary in the Morris College Student Government Association.

F ac u l t y a n d s taff N e w s Ivana Popovic, assistant professor of Mass Communications in the Division of Religion and Humanities, was selected as the college’s 2014 Excellence in Teaching Award honoree. This award, which is given by the South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities, Inc. (SCICU), recognizes and celebrates a faculty member from each SCICU member institution. Since joining Morris College in 2009, Popovic has dedicated her efforts to enhancing student learning, writing and creativity. She firmly believes in hands-on teaching, discussion-based lectures and gives students practical, hands-on assignments. In addition to academic advising and committee work, Popovic created, at the request of her students, a Photography Club, for which she serves as a faculty advisor. Also, every year, she is responsible for bringing in speakers from various media to participate in the Media Symposium that is held during the Fine Arts Festival. Honorees received their awards during a special dinner and ceremony held on April 8.

Morris professor wins

During the recent American Chemical Society’s 248th meeting and exposition, Morris College professor Dr. David Magnin was one of a small group of scientists who received the prestigious Heroes of Chemistry Award. This year’s meeting took place in San Francisco, where the organization recognized scientists who helped develop products that improve health and developed materials for plastics and electronics. Every year, the American Chemical Society accepts nominations from companies for Heroes of Chemistry to recognize talents. Previous scientists inducted in the organization’s hall of fame have excelled in innovation at prominent international corporations and have developed numerous commercial products that demonstrate strong financial performance - one of a number of important criterion to receive the award. Magnin and six other scientists received the award for their work while with Bristol-Myers Squibb. The scientists’ innovations have led to the discovery of Lomitapide (Juxtapid), an
inhibitor of microsomal triglyceride transfer protein. The scientists’ discovery is a treatment for familial hypercholesterolemia, an inherited genetic disorder that could lead to premature cardiovascular disease. Magnin worked for Bristol-Myers Squibb for almost 20 years, and the drug was later licensed by Aegerion Pharmaceuticals and is on the market. “I recognized at the time that I was working on a very special project. I also knew that these kind of opportunities come across your path once or maybe twice in a lifetime,” Magnin said. “It was a rare privilege to be in the right place at the right time and surrounded by great individuals.” Some of the methods used in their discovery are also reasons ACS recognized their work at Bristol-Myers Squibb, Magnin said. During the project, the team used “hit to lead-to New Chemical Entity” strategy, and it was the first project to determine the biological target using genetic markers and was also the first project to use robotics and technology to make compounds - methods
that are now the norm in the industry, Magnin said. Magnin has been an associate professor of chemistry at Morris College since 2005 and was previously a pastor at The Lighthouse Elim Fellowship in Princeton, New Jersey. The team at Bristol-Myers Squibb included Magnin, Scott Biller, John Dickson, Michael Lawrence, Michael Poss, Jeffrey Robl and Joseph Tino, who were all honored as 2014 ACS Heroes of Chemistry. “I am truly humbled to be recognized with the same award as (Miguel) Ondetti and (David) Cushman. These individuals were the principal players for the discovery of ACE inhibitors. This is the only other team from Bristol-Myers Squibb to have received the Heroes award.” ACS is a nonprofit organization chartered by Congress and has more than 161,000 members - making it the world’s largest scientific society. Other teams of scientists from Asahi Kasei Chemicals Corp., The Dow Chemical Co., Pfizer Inc. and The Procter & Gamble Co. were also recognized this year.

Dr. James Ibe, professor of Economics; and Ms. LaVon Simpson, associate professor of business, attended the National Conference of the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) in Chicago, IL on June 25-29. During the conference, Simpson successfully completed training and has been certified an ACBSP accreditation evaluator. Ibe took a refresher course and is now a certified ACBSP accreditation evaluator and mentor. Their attendance and participation were made possible through Title III funding.
Ms. Margaret Mukooza, assistant director of the RichardsonJohnson Learning Resources Center attended the 2014 American Library Association (ALA) annual conference and exhibition in Las Vegas, Nevada from June 26 through July1. In line with the conference theme “Transforming Our libraries, Ourselves,” librarians were offered a wide range of programs, sessions and discussion panels on a variety of topics including: customer and library user expectations, library services, systems and technology, teaching and learning, electronic books and collections, library leadership expectations, and library workforce. Out of these topics Mukooza attended the ones that most informed Morris College’s current

needs. These were: a) Facilitating Teaching and Learning Through the Integration of Library Services and Course Management, b); Using Instructional Design Applications to Effectively Flip Library Instruction, c) Rebranding the Library- Generating Visibility in the Virtual Age; OCLC’s Worldshare Management Services and, d) SIRSI Dynix BLUE CLOUD campus. The main purpose of the ALA conference is to offer librarians the current research, best practices and trends in libraries. These ideas and trends inform attendees of new ways to enhance library resources and services to students, faculty and staff.

The Reverends Doris B. Smith and Gilbert E. Wilson were recently honored during the Berea Association’s Annual Founder’s Day Banquet on October 18, 2014. Reverend Smith is a graduate of the Morris College Ministerial Extension Center and is pastor of the St. Mark Marlboro Missionary Baptist Church, Bennettsville, SC. She is involved with numerous association and community activities and has received many awards for her hard work and dedication. Reverend Wilson received the Bachelor of Theology degree from Morris College and is pastor of the Sandy Grove Missionary Baptist Church of Bennettsville. He also coaches the Lady Hornets basketball and softball teams.

In June, the Morris College Ohio Alumni Chapter participated in the annual AME of Central Ohio HBCU College Fair. Attendees included juniors and seniors from high schools throughout central Ohio. Chapter representatives informed students, and their parents, of the great academic programs offered at Morris College, individual attention provided by faculty and staff, and the family like atmosphere on campus. They also assured students that the college’s motto - “Enter to Learn; Depart to Serve” is more than a phrase but something that has been actualized in their lives and is evident by participation in the college fair. If attendees don’t enroll, chapter members are confident they are educated about what Morris has to offer and how their lives may be enhanced if they avail themselves to everything the college has to offer, take their studies seriously, and have a strong desire to grow as a person.

During Morris College’s recent commencement ceremony, President Luns C. Richardson recognized a special graduate in the audience before distributing diplomas. Horace Anderson, a South Carolina native and now a Texas resident, traveled many miles to finally take his well-deserved walk across the stage to receive the bachelor’s degree he earned in 1966. Anderson, like the rest of the recent graduates participating in the commencement this year, donned his cap and gown, sat attentively during the ceremony while Walter M. Kimbrough of Dillard University in Louisiana spoke to the graduating class and proudly shook the hands of Richardson and other members of the presidential party as he crossed the stage. “It was very emotional, and it was great because Dr. Richardson embraced me and let me know they were glad I came,” Anderson said. “I was on a cloud.” Anderson graduated from Edgefield County Colored High School in 1962 and had plans to attend South Carolina State University. However, his mother encouraged him to attend Morris College instead - a school he said he had never heard about before. But walking on the campus this past weekend, visiting his old dorm and the cafeteria, and experiencing the progress and new facilities of his alma mater with his old classmates before walking across the stage filled him with pride. “It was an honor, and my classmates and I really believe in perseverance. I enjoyed every aspect of it and hanging out there brought back flashbacks,” he said. Anderson played baseball and basketball for the college, one of the memories he recalled while recently touring the campus. Before he could actually experience commencement in 1966, Anderson went into the U.S. Air Force and then the Army, serving his country both in Vietnam and Operation Desert Storm. He earned his bachelor’s degree and planned to participate in commencement. However, he went into the military before he could. Afterward, Anderson became a history teacher and coached basketball and football for many years. He now resides in Texas with his wife, Marie - who traveled to South Carolina with him for the ceremony - and has five children, 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. So why travel so many miles when snail mail could have delivered the degree to his front door? “I wanted to be there, and I thought it was important for me to come,” Anderson said. “And, it was important to my mother, and it was her dream.”

Class Notes Bernadette R. Hampton, Class of 1992, a mathematics instructor and mathematics department chairperson at Battery Creek High School in Beaufort, SC; has been named president of the South Carolina Education Association (SCEA). She will serve a four-year term. In addition to her 20-plus years of classroom experience, Hampton has a lengthy history of involvement in advancing her profession. Before becoming President-Elect of the SCEA, she served four years as SCEA Vice President and was President of the Beaufort County Education Association (BCEA) for six years. She continues to maintain long-term memberships in the National Education Association (NEA), The SCEA, and the BCEA. In addition, Ms. Hampton is a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the South Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. She also serves on the Morris College National Alumni Association Leadership Team and her scholarly work has appeared in multiple publications.
Brandon Gordon, Class of 2004, earlier this year, was sworn in to Legislative District 25 on the Prince Georges County Central Committee in Maryland. Sandra R. Grant, Class of 2011, was appointed secretary of the National Baptist Convention of America (NBCA) Minister Wives and Widows Auxiliary on September 18 during the NBCA session held in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The NBCA Minister Wives and Widows assist with education and mission efforts worldwide. Grant is active in the Jerusalem Association of Georgetown, SC and the Jerusalem Minister Wives Auxiliary where her husband, Dr. D. L. Grant, Sr. serves as Vice Moderator. Additionally, she serves as First Lady of the Chapel Hill Baptist Church of Santee, SC and New Israel Missionary Baptist Church of Dalzell and is employed by Sumter School District and Ephraim D. Stephens Funeral Home of Sumter.

Napoleon A. Bradford, Class of 2000, received a Master of Divinity degree on May 10 from the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University. Elizabeth Rogers Givens, Class of 2000, the widow of alumnus, Joseph Charles Givens, Sr.; earned and was awarded the Doctor of Divinity degree, summa cum laude, from Oval Bible College in Lawrenceville, GA in July 2013. She also earned and was awarded the Master of Divinity degree, magna cum laude, from Oval Bible College in June 2011. Dr. Givens is a member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Sumter, SC, under the leadership of Reverend Dr. James Blassingame. She was the first woman to be licensed by Mt. Zion and the second woman to be ordained by the Sumter Baptist M&E Association. She is also a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. She serves as a magistrate judge for Sumter County Summary Court, is the first ordained minister and the second African American woman to serve in this capacity. Dr. Givens is in the process of completing her first book, “The Purple Scarf.”

J. Elbert Williams, Class of 2004, pastor of the Marion Parish of the United Methodist Church, Marion, SC; traveled to Johannesburg, South Africa and Zimbabwe on January 13 through January 20. The team he traveled with was led by South Carolina Resident Bishop Jonathan Holston. The purpose for the trip was two-fold; to better understand the conference’s connection to Africa University located in Zimbabwe, and to witness the launch of a new sustainable agriculture program by Africans for Africans. While in South Africa, they visited the Mandela House Museum and Mandela Restaurant in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Randolph Green, Class of 2012, recently graduated cum laude from the Morehouse School of Religion, ITC in Atlanta, GA where he earned the Master of Divinity degree. He plans to pursue a Ph.D. degree in Religion.

Sponsored by the Morris College National Alumni Association (MCNAA), the 2014 Alumni Weekend was held at the Spartanburg Marriott in Spartanburg, SC on April 10-13. This year, classes ending in “4” and “9” were honored during the class reunion luncheon. In the above photos (1-8) the classes of 1944, 1954, 1959, 1969, 1979, 1984, 1989, and 2014. During the awards recognition banquet, four honorees were recognized for their significant contributions, accomplishments, and achievements - (9) Mildred Hickman Welch, MCNAA Distinguised Service Award; (10) The late Reverend James C. “Jake” Boyce Jr., was posthumously awarded the MCNAA Professional Alumnus Award. The award was presented to his wife and son; (11) Reverend Aaron T. Brown, MCNAA Outstanding Alumnus Minister Award; and (12) Delvyn D. DesChamps, Morris College Young Alumni of the Year award. Other activities hosted included; the “Calling All Greeks and Friends” luncheon in which charter members of Greek-letter organizations were honored and a worship service.

Mary Francis Jones Brown (1968) passed away September 1, 2013 in Lancaster, SC. Mrs. Brown earned the Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Morris College. A registered nurse, she was employed by the school system as a certified teacher. She assisted many young people with their studies to obtain their high school diploma. Mary Curtis passed away July 6, 2014 in Sumter, SC. Mrs. Curtis attended Morris College and was self-employed as a professional seamstress and a designer of other arts and crafts. Gertrude Weston Dozier passed away October 16, 2014 in Stone Mountain, GA. Born September 30, 1920 in Sumter, Mrs. Dozier earned the Bachelor of Arts degree from Morris College and began her career as an educator following graduation. She taught in Timmonsville and Bishopville, SC; Preston, MD and Lynchburg, VA where she retired from the profession. A member of the Virginia Retired Teachers Association and the National Education Association, Mrs. Dozier used her love for music to help enhance the worship experience as choir director at her church in Bedford, Virginia. She was the sister of the late Dr. Benjamin F. Weston, a former pastor of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church of Sumter. Erma Viola Dwyer passed away September 18, 2014 in Sumter, SC. Ms. Dwyer earned the Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Morris College and the Master’s degree in Education from South Carolina State University. She studied further at the University of South Carolina and Oklahoma State University. Ms. Dwyer was an educator and private tutor for more than 33 years and retired from her teaching career in Dorchester County. The manager of her family’s floral business, she was recognized by the South Carolina House of Representatives (District 51), along with her sister, for distinguished contributions to the economic development of the South Sumter Community. She was a faithful and dedicated member of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church and the Woman’s Baptist E & M Convention of SC. Warren E. Hatcher passed away September 2, 2014 in Charleston, SC. Elder Hatcher obtained the Bachelor of Science degree from Morris College and retired from the Wateree Correctional Institution. He was a Reformed Methodist Union Episcopal Church and eventually became a presiding elder of the Sumter district. He was also the general secretary of mission of the RMUE Church. Jefferson Davis McGowens, Sr. passed away May 20, 2014 in Greenville, SC. Reverend McGowens furthered his religious education at the American Baptist College of Nashville, TN and the Morris College Extension (Greenvillle) and the Bible Institute of Spartanburg, SC. A U. S. Army veteran during the Korean War, he was awarded and decorated with the Purple Heart, the United Nations Service Medal along with

other ribbons and military achievements. Reverend McGowens a former moderator of the North Enoree Education and Missionary Baptist Association and was affiliated with the Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina, the Progressive National Baptist Convention, Inc. and a member of the Eureka Lodge #59 Prince Hall Free and Accepted Masons. He was pastor emeritus of the Mountain Grove Baptist Church, Travelers Rest, SC. Leroy Smith Sr. passed away September 10, 2014 in Sumter, SC. Mr. Smith earned the Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from Morris College, the Masters of Education degree from North Carolina College at Durham and did additional studies at the University of Indiana and the University of South Carolina. Mr. Smith was a devoted and dedicated educator who served the Lee County School District for 41 years as a teacher, principal, Head Start Program director and coordinator of various programs. His contributions to the social, religious, education, civic and cultural welfare of the Sumter community was demonstrated by his involvement in numerous organizations which included the Morris College National Alumni Association, the National Education Association and the South Carolina Education Association. An avid hunter and fisherman, Mr. Smith was the father of Mrs. Janet S. Clayton, director of the college’s Learning Resources Center and an instructor in the Division of Education. Rosella George Toney passed away July 8, 2014. A native of Lee County, SC, Mrs. Toney earned the Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Morris College and the Masters of Science degree from South Carolina State University. Certified in teaching and school administration, she completed post-graduate studies at Georgia State College, Temple University, the University of Colorado and the University of South Carolina. Mrs. Toney, a passionate educator and adult educator, taught every grade level at the elementary, junior high and secondary school levels. She retired from the public school system as the assistant principal at Bishopvillle High School in 1996. Affiliated with the South Carolina Educational Association, the National Educational Association and the National Association of Secondary School Principals, Mrs. Toney’s life was marked by her devotion to church, community, education and family. The Teacher of the Year Award, the Morris College Distinguished Alumni Award and the Mary McLeod Bethune Award for Distinguished Leadership and Service by the National Council of Negro Women are among the numerous awards and honors bestowed upon her.

Daisy B. Alexander passed away March 28, 2014 in Camden, SC. Dr. Alexander was a very strong supporter and trustee. A graduate of Voorhees Junior College, Allen University and New York University, she studied further at Benedict College, Morris College and the University of South Carolina. A distinguished educator, mathematics teacher and community icon, her outstanding contributions toward helping others have benefited the lives of countless individuals. From organizing the first adult-education classes in Kershaw County to serving on numerous boards and organizations such as the South Carolina Department of Social Services, the Kershaw County Council on Aging and the Wateree Community Actions Agency, numerous awards and honors give tribute to Dr. Alexander for her lifetime of service she has rendered so unselfishly. During her tenure as president of the Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina, the President’s Home, constructed by the ushers in 1986, was paid in full. Dr. Luns C. Richardson, serving as eulogist during funeral services for Dr. Alexander, praised her loyalty to the institution as a member of the board and through her active involvement with the Mt. Moriah Baptist Association and the Kershaw County Alumni Chapter. “Dr. Alexander gave of herself in service,” the president stated. “People and good causes were her concern.” Dr. Alexander was recognized by the South Carolina General Assembly for her lifetime achievements as an educator and a community volunteer. She was also awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from Morris College. Samuel Booker Marshall was funeralized on March 21, 2014 in St. George, SC. Dr. Marshall earned the Bachelor of Science and the Master of Science in Education degrees from South Carolina State University and was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity (1984). Upon graduation, he became the Agricultural County Agent for Clemson University in Newberry County. He studied professional singing in New York and later became a classical concert singer. Throughout his teaching profession, Dr. Marshall served as principal of various schools and owned and operated Shuler-Marshall Funeral Home. He served as pastor of Second Providence Baptist Church, Bowman, SC, and was later called to pastor Good Hope Baptist Church, St. George, SC. He became pastor emeritus of both churches when he retired on February 27, 2012. Dr. Marshall continued his contributions to education as a member of the Orangeburg County District Three School Board. Thirty of his thirty-two years were served as chairman. The moderator emeritus of the Lovely Hill Baptist Association, he was a trustee of Morris College for eighteen years and was affiliated with numerous organizations and was the sole surviving charter member of the Columbia Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. Known for his magnificent and melodious baritone voice, he was actively involved in numerous initiatives to help renovate, beautify and attract economic development for the Holly Hill area. Dr. Luns C. Richardson gave remarks on behalf of Morris College during the funeral service. He praised this legendary giant for his commitment to education, his love of people and his unselfish support of the college.

James C. Copeland passed away April 1, 2014June 15, 2014 in Spartanburg County, SC. The Reverend Dr. Copeland, a U. S. Armed Forces veteran, actively served the Spartanburg County Baptist Association as moderator of the Union of Churches, as advisor of the Brotherhood and as an instructor in its School of Methods. He was the organizer and pastor of the Messiah Baptist Church of Spartanburg County. Donal Lee Hill passed away April 3, 2014 in Simpsonville, SC. Reverend Hill, a U. S. Army veteran, retired from Greenville County Schools and was the former pastor of Jubilee Baptist Church, Taylors, SC. Elizabeth Matthews Hunter passed away on July 14, 2014 in Williamsburg County, SC. Mrs. Hunter, a dedicated educator who retired after 30 years as a public school teacher, taught in Berkeley and Williamsburg counties. She earned the Bachelor of Science degree from Benedict College and pursued graduate studies at South Carolina State University and the University of South Carolina. Mrs. Hunter rendered loyal service to the Morris College Williamsburg County Alumni Chapter following the passing of its president, Mrs. Essie Lee Matthews Shaw, who was her sister. Mrs. Hunter was married to the late Reverend William Nathaniel Hunter. Willie Jackson passed away October 10, 2014 in Sumter, SC. Retired U.S Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Jackson received numerous decorations and awards for his outstanding services. Included among them were the National Defense Service Medal W/1 Service Star; the Meritorious Service Medal W/2 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Air Force Commendation Medal W/3 Oak Leaf Clusters. Following his military retirement, he was employed by Bosch Braking Systems in Sumter. Chief Master Sgt. Jackson was married to Mrs. Barbara R. Jackson. She is a member of the college’s board of trustees and president of the Morris College National Alumni Association. Wilhelmena Bannister Joe passed away July 10, 2014 in Bamberg County, SC. Upon graduating from high school, Mrs. Joe furthered her education at the University of South Carolina (Allendale, SC extension), Clemson University (Blackville, SC extension), Denmark Technical College and South Carolina State University. Mrs. Joe’s love for helping others and supporting Morris College was clearly seen through the dedicated service and distinguished leadership she provided while president in the Bethlehem Baptist Association Sunday School and BTU Convention and while moderator of the Gethsemane Union. She was actively involved with the Woman’s Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina, the South Carolina Baptist Congress of Christian Education and the Gethsemane Baptist Church of Bamberg where she served in several leadership positions. Dr. Luns C. Richardson, attending the services celebrating Mrs. Joe’s life and legacy, offered the prayer and praised her for having been a hard and dedicated worker who put her heart into everything she did.

FRIENDS OF THE COLLEGE William Pilgrim passed away June 16, 2014 in Clinton, SC. Reverend Pilgrim, a retired welder, was a dedicated leader and pastored several congregations during his lifetime in the upstate region of South Carolina. He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, Greenwood, SC. Alvin C. Settles, Jr. passed away June 15, 2014 in Aiken, SC. The Reverend Dr. Settles served several churches as pastor. He retired from pastoral ministry in 2012 after having served St. Peter Baptist Church, Elko, SC for 25 years.
Nathaniel Butler Wells passed away April 7, 2014 in Cheverly, MD. A native of Sumter, SC, Mr. Wells was a military veteran who dutifully and honorably served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps, the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force. He earned the Associate in Arts degree from Prince George’s Community College and the Bachelor of Science degree in Government and Politics from the University of Maryland. He is the brother of Dr. Bernice Wells Stukes-Mose, a former member of the college’s board of trustees and a loyal friend.

She was affiliated with the South Carolina Independent College/Universities Consortium, the Council on Career Development and several other organizations. She was also the faculty-staff representative on the Morris College Board of Trustees. Her legacy will always be the energy and dedication with which she guided students in making an important decision: “What am I going to do with my life?” With an awareness of vocational opportunities and requirements, she utilized the college’s resources to help prepare students for the workplace by combining academic programs with practical experience. She went beyond the call of duty in helping to develop the employment competencies of our students.

Attention Alumni and friends Get on the bus for alumni weekend 2015 The Morris College Bus will travel to Baltimore, Maryland for the 2015 Alumni Weekend activities and you can reserve your seat today! The total cost to ride round-trip is $125.00. A deposit of $25.00 is due December 1, 2014. The final payment is due March 15, 2015. The bus will depart from the Morris College campus at 1:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 9, 2015 and depart from Baltimore, MD on April 12, 2015.
