Presidentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Message Dear Alumni, Members of Supporting Churches and Friends: As the college nears the end of the largest capital development project ever in its history, we are pleased to announce the completion of the already occupied Twin Tower Residence Hall. This 43,500 square feet, three-story facility houses 74 female students on one side and 74 male students on the other. Each side has its own separate entrance and lobby. Each floor, on both sides of the building, has its own computer room and laundry room. Also, a new parking lot is being constructed behind the Wilson-Booker Science Building to provide additional parking spaces. Again, we are forever grateful to Dr. Solomon Jackson, Jr. for blessing the institution with his $10 million gift which made most of these projects possible. All of the physical additions and improvements taking place on the campus are beneficial toward our educational mission of nurturing and preparing students for full and productive careers. From reassessing and strengthening academic programs and educational services that promote studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; intellectual and personal development to challenging them toward Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP), we owe it both to our students and to ourselves to ensure the attainment of their success. After all, our number one priority, as an accredited institution, is to ensure studentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s future success and to help them in every way to achieve the SAP that ensures that success. We are committed to this, because we want our students to see how much we care about their success. It is not difficult to see that we are all in this together. Morris College, like any viable institution, is a cooperative effort that requires everyone doing his or her part. It involves students being responsible and accountable. It involves the entire faculty and staff being effective and committed. It even involves the continued efforts of our alumni, supporting churches and friends in helping to recruit new students, in making direct gifts to the college, and in encouraging others to do the same. All of the wonderful, positive things taking place at the college could not have been realized without the cooperative efforts of us all working on behalf of improving Morris College. Thank you for cooperating with us, here at Morris College, as we take challenges and turn them into opportunities for our students. I solicit your continuing support and encouragement as the college endeavors to become an even stronger academic center dedicated to helping prepare its students for Satisfactory Academic Progress and success. orris College has received an initial contribution of $10,568.07 from the estate of the late Mrs. Eunice Sherard Stephens. It was given to establish the Augustus T. and Eunice S. Stephens Endowed Scholarship Fund for eligible students. Mrs. Stephens attended the college at the high school level where she met Reverend Augustus T. Stephens. Dr. J. J. Starks, her uncle, was president at that time. She and her husband-to-be later transferred to Benedict College where she completed her high school and college studies. A retired educator whose outstanding teaching career covered forty years, Mrs. Stephens voluntarily taught reading to adults who did not know how to read, owned and operated Stephens Flowers & Gift Shop for more than 20 years, and faithfully supported the college. Affiliated with various educational and fraternal organizations, she was a member of Friendship Baptist Church, Aiken, SC. Mrs. Stephens passed away at the age of 102.

High Rankings Morris College was recently named on the list of Most Affordable Small Private Colleges by AffordableCollegesOnline.org. The organization’s 2013 “Most Affordable Small Private Colleges” list includes “65 top quality small private colleges that have an affordable price tag.” Morris College has received the highest possible grade of 3.0 on a recent report from the U.S. Department of Education that evaluates colleges and universities on their level of financial responsibility. The grades are based net worth, operating losses, and the relationship of assets to liabilities. Grades range from 3.0 - negative 1.0.

A New Parking Lot is being constructed behind the Wilson-Booker Science Building. It will provide an additional 60 parking spaces and will be landscaped with shrubbery and trees. The parking lot will include lighting and a sprinkler system. September 15 is the projected completion date for the project, weather permitting. This landscape and beautification project is also funded by Dr. Jacksonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s $10 million gift.

Alumnus Isaac C. Joe Shares Why He Donates Land “I Love Morris College . . .”

The 83 acres of land I donated was just a gift to show my appreciation for the immeasurable education I received from Morris College. The college prepared me to be an educator and a positive role model for others. I came up a sharecropper in the rural area of Thomastown in Lee County. The county is only 13 years older than I am. Lee County was founded in 1902. I was born on June 24, 1915. I had to walk five miles to school, and five miles back, every school day. I came up on the rough side of the road and the traveling was not easy during those days. There was no high school for blacks in Lee County. I had a choice of going to school in Sumter, Camden, Hartsville, Darlington, or to the Mayesville Institute. I decided to go to Morris College. I lived in the city, because I had to work (laughs). The first year I was there, I was told that I had to find some money, or I had to go home. I went and talked to Dr. I. D. Pinson, the third president of the college. It was the spring of the year, so Mrs. Pinson put me to work out in the flower yard. Later that day when she returned, she was well pleased with the work I did and sent me to the dining hall to get some supper. Back then, the citizens of Sumter would call to the college looking for young men to work around homes and those kinds of things. I eventually got a job at Jim’s Waffle Shop. It was a brand new business that had been built. I was to make enough money working there, in the evenings or early in the morning, to pay for my tuition. I finished high school there and graduated from the college in 1940. After graduation, I taught school in Lee County for one year. I had to put my educational career on hold so I could serve my country in the United States Army during World War II. I was doing basic training at Camp Lee, Virginia (now, Fort Lee, Virginia) in 1941 when Pearl Harbor was bombed. They were drafting every able bodied man between the ages of 18 to 32. The training I received from Morris College was of great benefit all during the wartime. In the mornings, we did basic training, and in the afternoons I would teach some of the other fellows how to read, write and sign their names. In the army you could not get a check unless you signed for it. You couldn’t sign with an “X” like they did back on the farm. I was also able to work in the office at regimental headquarters with regimental supply sergeants and other high ranking officials. I stayed in the army six years, and was a Master Sergeant for five of those years. I came out of the army in 1947. I was on Okinawa when I decided to come back home and resume by teaching career. Some of my buddies went West in search of better opportunities, but I wanted to get back to the South and help improve life for others. “Brown v. Board of Education” was an important case that helped opened doors so black children could receive an equal education. Blacks children in Lee County, and other counties, went to school for seven months, while white children went to school for nine months. White children had good public schools, even in little towns. Inspired by that 1954 United States Supreme Court’s landmark decision, I pressed forward and earned my master’s degree from, at that time, South Carolina State University in 1956. I returned to Lee County’s educational system in 1957 as the first principal of its newly built Mount Pleasant High School in Elliott, South Carolina - Lee County. I was determined to make a positive difference in the lives of my students as their principal, and I served there for twenty years. Mrs. Blanche Joe, my wife, taught there for more than forty years as an English and literature teacher. After retiring in 1977 as a high school principal, I continued numerous community involvements. From 1981 to 1983, I was fortunate to serve further as a representative in the South Carolina House of Representatives. Education, of course, was among my legislative priorities. I love Morris College. I am proud to be among its graduates, and I appreciate the quality education I received. Yes, Morris College did a lot for me; even bestowed upon me an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters back in May 2005. So, I donated the land, and I know the college is going to take its value and use it to help educate other deserving young men and women.

SCICU Day 2013

On Wednesday, April 17 a delegation consisting of five Morris College students and two staff members attended the South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities Day at the State Capitol. SCICU students had an opportunity to meet their state legislators, to express appreciation for state aid funding programs, particularly the SC Tuition Grant, and to solicit continued support of the programs. The students were recognized in the House by Rep. J. David Weeks, a Morris College graduate. Students in the delegation were: Refugio Banuelos, Brandon Brown, Diamond Davis, Krystin Gregg, and Jalee Lovely. They were accompanied by Director of Financial Aid, Mrs. Sandra Gibson, and the Assistant Director of Financial Aid, Ms. Marguerite Wilder.

Career Services held their Black Executive Exchange Program Career Fest on March 13 -15. Mr. Isiah Reese, Sumter native and head director of World Wide Marketing for Microsoft Corporation, was the featured speaker for the assembly. Reese shared lessons for launching career success from his internationally published speech, “Ready, Aim, Shoot” as he addressed the Career Fest theme, “College to Career: Transitioning to the Global Workplace.” Additional visiting professors included Dr. Constance Lane, McDonald’s LLC; Mr. Charles Kearse, II, Microsoft OEM; Mr. Kenneth Smith, Sr., Tuomey Healthcare System; Mr. Samuel Myers, Sumter School District; Mr. Joe Funchess, Safelite Auto Glass Corporation; Dr. Annette West, St. Leo University; Ms. Von Grethen Nelson, The Nature Conservancy; Ms. Maria Newton-Ta Bon, Sumter School District; and Ms. Aviva Seabrook, financial management consultant. Natural Sciences and Mathematics Names 30 Scholars During the 2012-2013 academic year, 30 Division of Mathematics and Natural Science students received DOE-EM scholarships covering the total cost of their education in the amount of $15,606. Morris College Outreach Middle and High School Students Visit for a Day Morris College hosted more than 850 students on Middle School Visitation Day on February 6 and more than 450 high school students on High School Visitation Day on February 13.

Camp Julia A. Starks/DunbarGandy Retreat, sponsored by the

Woman’s Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina, was held on the Morris College campus on June 24-28. Children ages 6-14, participated in daily devotion, exercise, and recreational activities as they addressed the theme, “ABCs of God’s Promises.”

The SC Baptist Junior Brotherhood held their annual Retreat and Bible Bee on the Morris

College campus in July. Boys ages 6-17, had the opportunity to participate in recreational activities and daily devotions as well as the popular Bible Bee competition.

U pw a r d B o u n d We l c o m e s 72 to Summer Component The Morris College Upward Bound Program held its 2013 summer component from June 10 - July 17. Seventy-two students from seven high schools in Sumter, Lee and Clarendon counties spent six-week on the Morris College campus during the 2013 Summer Component.

The curriculum consisted of strengthening students’ basic skills and putting programs in place to ensure that participants pass the South Carolina High School Assessment Program mandated test as well as preparation for the SAT and ACT exams that are required for college admission.

The Morris College Pan-Hellenic Council sponsored a Greek Unity program on Sunday, February 17. The theme was Unity: Let Us Lead the Way. Dr. Luns C. Richardson, Morris College president, was the speaker. President Richardson encouraged the collegeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s five Greek letter organizations to serve as role models to the campus community in exhibiting the principles for which they were all founded: service, scholarship, and leadership. Mrs. Janice Thompson presented a check for $4000 to President Luns C. Richardson at the Morris College Choraleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Annual Spring Concert. The check was given in honor of the late Mrs. Claretta Freeman King who graduated in 1936 from the collegeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s former high school. According to Thompson, Mrs. King performed as a singer and actress on Broadway and opened the first black talent agency in New York City. The gift will be used to increase the scholarship amount for the Chorale.

Honors Program Holds Spring Induction Morris College Honors Program inducted seven students on April 4. The Honors Program, under the Division of General Studies, inducts freshman and sophomore students at the end of each spring semester who meet the 3.40 GPA requirement. Â The program is designed to develop leadership and critical thinking skills through seminars, projects, and co-curricular activities.

’66 Morris College Hornets team was nationally ranked

Rossie Kearson demonstrates the shooting form that enabled him to become the all-time scoring leader at Morris College.

During the early part of the 1966 college basketball season, the Morris College team led the nation in field goal percentage and scoring. On the team was a young athlete, Rossie Kearson, who attracted national attention for his scoring average and his overall athleticism. The hoopsters brought state and national attention to Sumter, Coach Andrew Pollard and the Morris College athletic program. Today’s article is based on interviews published in 1966 from Item archives, the Library Services of Morris College and personal interviews with Kearson and Coach Horace Anderson.

probably our best player,” he said. “I don’t know if he could make it in the NBA or not; he’s only 6-3, which is pretty short for the big leagues.” Kearson graduated from Central High School in Newark in 1962. He averaged 16.2 points a game and was selected to the Newark All-City Basketball First Team. He was recruited to play at Morris College, where he received his bachelor of arts degree in elementary education in 1966. While at Morris, Kearson elevated his play to another level, being selected to the South-

The Hornets lost to Albany State by one point in the finals, primarily because of the opposition’s much taller lineup. Kearson was named the tournament MVP and averaged 26 points per game. Kearson completed his senior season with an impressive 29.5 scoring average, which attracted the attention of a number of scouts. eastern Athletic Conference First Team each of his four years. He was featured in a book, written by Ronald Smothers and titled “Salt Mine,” which detailed his numerous basketball achievements. He was also accorded small college All-America Honorable Mention. Kearson attributed a large portion of his basketball success to the after-school youth development program offered by his school and the New Jersey Educational System. He noted that he “did not see any such programs in operation in the South, thus the kids from up north often had a distinct advantage over local athletes.” He also remembers that he had a period during his senior year which he could devote to honing his skills in basketball. Kearson said, “On Saturday the gyms remained open, which gave

reer, Kearson accepted a job in Wadley, Ga., as an elementary school teacher. In 1968 he returned to Newark to work in public schools, where he taught for 31 years at Franklin Elementary School before retiring in 1999. He currently works as a director in the city’s day care program. Kearson was inducted into the Morris College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999 as the school’s alltime leading scorer. On Oct. 25, 2012, he was honored by the Newark community with induction into the City’s Hall of Fame. The Morris College basketball team of 1966 achieved a special place in Sumter’s sports history. These former athletes have had successful professional lives, and several have become outstanding coaches. The late Coach Pollard and the members of the ’66 team were successful in bringing state and national attention to our community and achieved a level of athletic performance few have exceeded. Fall Harvest 2013 The college will hold its Annual Fall Harvest Worship Service and Rally on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. in the Garrick-Boykin Human Development Center Dr. Jerry Young, senior pastor of New Hope Baptist Church of Jackson, Miss., will be the keynote speaker. Dr. Young received a Bachelor of Science in sociology and social welfare from Rust College in Holly Springs, Miss., where he met and married the love of his life, Mrs. Helen Akins Young. With her support and encouragement, he earned a Master of Divinity and a Doctor of Ministry from Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Miss. They are the proud parents of two daughters, Dr. Jerlen Nelson and Kelli Elizabeth (Benjamin) Hart. They are also proud to have four grandchildren. Dr. Young has served on several local, state, and national boards and has been awarded numerous prestigious honors and awards. He is regularly invited to speak/lecture at schools and colleges throughout Mississippi and across the nation. A highly-skilled and sought-after minister, Dr. Young has had the opportunity to preach in pulpits across the country and has breached several racial and denominational lines, touching them with the transforming power of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Presently, Dr. Young serves on the Board of Trustees at Belhaven College in Jackson, Miss., as well as his alma mater, Rust College in Holly Springs, Miss. He is the immediate past President of the General Missionary Baptist State Convention of Mississippi, Incorporated. He currently serves as the vice president at-large of the National Baptist Convention USA Inc.

Dr. William P. Diggs, Sr. and Mrs. Clotilda D. Diggs were honored by Trinity Baptist Church, Florence, SC during a retirement dinner held at the Florence Civic Center on March 1, 2013. Individuals came from all over the state and various parts of the country to attend the Diggs’ “Fifty Years of Service Legacy Celebration.” Dr. Diggs, known for his provocative and prophetic voice, served on the faculty at Benedict College, the faculty of Morris College and is a former Morris College Trustee . He is a past moderator of the Pee Dee Baptist Association. Mrs. Diggs a retired educator, taught English under Dr. Richardson when he served as principal of Wilson High School in Florence, SC. She President Richardson congratulates Dr. Diggs. is also a past president of the Pee Dee Baptist Woman’s District Department. Both Dr. and Mrs. Diggs are known for their passion in empowering and improving the lives of others. Dr. Richardson was one of the many notable guests who gave tributes thanking the Diggs for their fifty years of distinguished service to Christian ministry and higher education. Trinity Baptist Church is among the five leading churches in the state that support Morris College very generously.

James B. Blassingame, a native of Seneca, SC, was recently elected president of the Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina during its annual session in Spartanburg, SC on May 9, 2013. Dr. Blassingame earned the Bachelor of Arts degree (1981) and the Bachelor of Divinity degree from the former Morris College School of Religion. He has participated in Continuing Education studies at Princeton Theological Seminary, Princeton, NJ and completed a nine month internship in clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) with the South Carolina Department of Corrections, where he provided pastoral care to inmates in a maximum security prison, including three months on Death Row. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Ministry Degree from Erskine Theological Seminary, Due West, SC. A living testament of the college’s motto: “Enter to Learn; Depart to Serve,” Dr. Blassingame serves as the senior pastor at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Sumter, SC. Since 1984, he has led his congregation in seeing challenges as opportunities to “prove what God can do.” A new sanctuary costing almost one half million dollars was dedicated in 1991. Through the grace of God and the ardent cooperation of the congregation, a twenty year mortgage was liquidated in nine years. In September 2011, the new 17,000 square feet Mount Zion Enrichment Center was dedicated to provide services such as after school care, a summer reading program, adult computer literacy training, teen counseling and intergenerational programs. Dr. Blassingame is a member of several boards and organizations. He is secretary of the Morris College Board of Trustees, first assistant secretary of the National Baptist Convention USA, Incorporated, and vice chairman of the South Carolina Fellowship of the NBCUSA, Inc. to name a few. He is the recipient of many awards and recognitions, including the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity (2000) bestowed upon him by his alma mater and Benedict College’s Marnie L. Duckett Founder’s Day Award (2006). Dr. Blassingame is married to the former Shirley L. McFadden and is the father of three children, six grandchildren and a daughter-in-law.

Audrey Potts Neal, a native of Sumter, SC, was recently elected president of the Woman’s Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina during its annual session held at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Simpsonville, SC on Thursday, June 13, 2013. Mrs. Neal earned her Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education, and the Master of Education degree in business education from South Carolina State University. Certified in middle school language arts and mathematics, she recently retired on May 31, 2013. She taught at elementary schools in Lynchburg, Gadsden, and Columbia, SC . Mrs. Neal has been active in the work of the church throughout her life. This continued as she became more involved as a minister’s wife. She is a member of First Nazareth Baptist Church, Columbia, SC and serves as a member of the Senior Missionary Society and is an advisor of the Young Woman’s Auxiliary. She is active in numerous professional, community and religious organizations and is an instructor in the South Carolina Baptist Congress of Christian Education. She is also a member of the college’s Board of Trustees. Mrs. Neal, a past president of the Wateree Woman’s Convention, Upper Division, has served the Woman’s Convention of numerous years, including working with he operation of the Julia A. Starks Camp/Dunbar-Gandy Retreat held at Morris College in June of each year. She has served the convention as financial secretary, recording secretary and corresponding secretary, including several committees within the convention. Mrs. Neal also served in all three positions as vice president of the convention before elected to president. The recipient of numerous awards and recognitions, Mrs. Neal has done extensive mission work. She has attended the World’s Baptist Alliance held in Toronto, Canada and the North American Baptist Women’s Union of the World’s Baptist Alliance and many other conferences. Mrs. Neal is the widow of the late Reverend Dr. Westberry H. Neal, Sr. and is the stepmother of two adult children, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The newly elected Student Government Association and officers of classes and organizations were installed at the collegeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Installation Assembly on April 25. Interim Dean of Student Affairs, Rev. Eliza Black, presided over the assembly and installed student leaders for the 2013-2014 academic year. President Luns C. Richardson installed the SGA officers for the coming year. The newly installed SGA officers are: Refugio Banuelos, president; Lewis Fordjour, first-vice president; Tevin Hill, second vice-president; Catherine Evans, secretary; Shereka Simpson, assistant secretary; Rasha Frye, treasurer; Ashley Vinston, business manager; Carrie Bovill, parliamentarian; and Samuel McMahand, chaplain. CharBrenna Blackwell, junior, organizational management, interned with the SC Legislative Black Caucus during spring semester. She completed research on social issues. Desiraé Lowery, senior, elementary education, was selected to attend the Johnson Space Center’s PreService Institute in Houston in June. The one week, all expenses paid residential program, allowed early childhood, elementary education and middle school education majors to gain skills in teaching STEM in K-8 classrooms. Mayo Phillips, class of 2013, history, used his time wisely as a Sumter Museum Curator/Educator during the spring semester. Mayo had the opportunity to assist with the Lincoln Exhibit (Lincoln: the Constitution and Civil War) which is being displayed in libraries and/or museums throughout the United States. Dominique Wells, senior, elementary education, attended National Education Association’s Student Leadership Conference June 28-July 1 in Atlanta. Dominique is the former Morris College Student- SCEA President and will be the new SCEA President for the state of South Carolina.

Call Me Mister program participants, Dominique Wells, Xavier Reuben, Herod David and Jeremy Carter attended a summer internship at Clemson University from June 1-July 20. Call Me Mister is designed to increase the number of available teachers from a diverse background to work in the state’s lowest performing elementary schools.

Dr. Jacob Butler, chairperson of the Division of Social Sciences, was recently appointed as an ex-officio member of the South Carolina African-American Heritage Commission. The commission was established in 2007 by the South Carolina General Assembly to enhance the SC Commission of Archives and History’s efforts to preserve and promote African-American culture and historic sites in the state. Dorothy Cheagle, director of Planning and Governmental Relations/Title III, and Betty Washington, Title III Program Assistant, attended the 2013 National Association of HBCU Title III Administrators Technical Assistance Workshop in Arlington, Va. in June. The training addressed compliance, transparency, accountability, and specifics of the cost-principles. Sessions were also held on best practices, future funding, changes to the annual performance report and changes to the Office of Management and Budget circulars. Dr. Marc David, chairperson of the Division of Religion and Humanities, attended the Conference on College Composition and Communication in Las Vegas, Nev. in March. The theme of CCCC was “The Public Work of Composition”. Workshops addressed the quality of student’s writings, social media and visual literacy, and teaching new models of writing. David recently published an autobiographical novel, “Coming Full Circle: Memoirs of a Campus Life Dean.” The book chronicles his educational experiences from college student to administrator and includes his work at Dillard University during Hurricane Katrina and the acceptance of his current position at Morris College. Venessa Jefferson, director of residential life, attended the South Carolina College Personnel Association’s 2013 Spring Drive-in Conference at University of South Carolina Upstate in Spartanburg. Sessions discussed food security among college students, health and physical fitness and strategies for collaborating with academic and student affairs offices.

Mukooza recently attended the 2013 American Library Association’s Annual Conference and Exhibition in Chicago, Ill. The theme was “Transforming our Libraries, Ourselves.” The ALA Conference offers librarians current research, best practices, and trends in libraries. Dr. Joseph K. Popoola, assistant professor of speech communications, attended the 83rd Southern States Communication Association Convention in April in Louisville, Ky. The theme of the conference was,

Margaret Mukooza, director of the Richardson-Johnson Learning Resources Center, a native of the nation state of Uganda, became a United States citizen at a swearing in ceremony in Charleston, SC in January. Mukooza arrived in the United States in 1991 for graduate studies at the University of Rochester in Rochester, N. Y. She has been at Morris College for 15 years.

“Communication, Choices, and Consequences.” The convention highlighted research demonstrating the relevance of communication to all human endeavors including individual wellness, personal relationships, public advocacy, persuasion and persuasive campaigns, rhetoric and composition in higher education, public address, nonverbal communication and media. Rudolph Wheeler, director of Call Me MISTER and Upward Bound counselor, attended the Council for Opportunity in Education Legislation and Regulations Seminar in Arlington, Va. in February. The seminar equips Upward Bound personnel with information about legislation and regulations that are needed to effectively manage a project. Marguerite D. Wilder, assistant director of The Office of Financial Aid, Lou E. Parrott, loan default coordinator, and Gloria J. Evans, student loan coordinator, attended the Southern Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators Conference in Atlanta in February. The association observed its 50th anniversary with the theme “Celebrating Yesterday’s Achievements, Shaping Tomorrow’s Aspirations.”

The Hartsville/Darlington Alumni Chapter featured the Morris College Chorale in concert on Sunday, April 7 at Cherry Grove Baptist Church in Darlington, South Carolina. Dr. E. B. Burroughs, a member of the chapter, serves as pastor of the church. Dinner was provided for the students and accompanying staff. The chapter also provided a care bag for each student. Mrs. Thomasena Peterson serves as the chapter president. The Lee County Alumni Chapter sponsored its annual Miss Tots to Teens Pageant on May 5 at Saint Paul United Methodist Church. Reverend Blondell Miller, Class of 1973, is pastor. The event raised $1, 261.12 for the college.

The pageant winner was Kristina Kennedy, the daughter of Ms. Tina Kennedy-Dixon. She was sponsored by Mrs. Louise D. Kennedy. Kristina reported the evening of the pageant $637.00. First-runner-up was Destiny Johnson. The daughter of Ms. Gina Harris & Mr. Tommie Johnson. She was sponsored by Mr. Willie Blyther. Destiny reported the evening of the pageant $250.00.

Second-runner up was N’Dejan Wright. She is the daughter of Ms. Nicole Wright & Mr. Hashimen Brown. She was sponsored by Mrs. Margret Durant. N’Dejan Wright reported the evening of the pageant $249.12. Third-runner-up was Tykiera Wiley. She is the daughter of Ms. Techica Wiley & Mr. Nygel Rogers. She was sponsored by Ms. Dorothy McFadden. Tykiera reported the evening of the pageant $125.00. Mr. Willie Blyther is the president of the chapter. The Marion County Alumni Chapter held its alumni banquet on Friday, July 26 at St. Paul Baptist Church in Mullins, SC. The college’s president, Dr. Luns C. Richardson was the guest speaker. Dr. Mack T. Hines, vice-chairman of the Morris College Board of Trustees, is advisor to the chapter.

The alumni chapter also sponsored a drawing with the following winners: Mrs. Altomese Cooper (Winner – $100.00 cash gift), Ms. Maggie Lane (1st place winner – a Piggly Wiggly gift card) and Mr. Robert Dinkins (2nd place winner - $25.00 cash gift. Mr. Dinkins gave his winnings to Taiyla Richburg (the child that pulled his name). Mr. Stanley Scriven serves as president of the chapter.

The Sumter Alumni Chapter sponsored its 1st Annual Gospel Fest Sunday, April 14, 2013. Featuring Morris College Gospel Choir along with the Sumter County Sheriff Office Gospel Choir, Mr. Richard Boone and The New Boyz of Sumter. The program was held at the Salem Chapel and Heritage Center, 101 South Salem Street, Sumter, South Carolina. Dr. Ralph W. Canty is the pastor of the church and an alumnus of the college.

Alumni Notes Dominique Anderson, Class of 2013, wed Kevin J. Sanderson on June 2, 2013 in Augusta, Ga. Dr. E. B. Burroughs (Doris), Class of 1964, was honored for 50 years of service as pastor of Cherry Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Darlington, SC on March 22 at a formal dinner held in his honor at Francis Marion University in Florence, SC. Reginald China, Class of 2001, recently earned his M.Ed. from USC in Columbia, S.C. Marquis Clark, Class of 2012, has been named Outstanding First Year Teacher for the Cleveland Academy of Leadership in Spartanburg, S.C. Joy Dunson, Class of 2010, has been selected as Lower Lee Elementary Schools Teacher of the Year. She has also been promoted to the position of Teacher Coach for the 20132014 school year. The position is a part of South Carolina’s Teacher Advancement Program. She will observe teachers, provide feedback and demonstrate lessons. Rev. Michael D. Gadsden, Sr., Class of 1994, has been hired as Victim Advocate for the Chatham County District Attorney’s Victim Witness Assistance Program in Savannah, Ga. Bernadette Hampton, Class of 1992, received the M.Ed. in mathematics education from the USC, College of Education in May. This is Hampton’s second master’s degree. She teaches mathematics at Battery Creek High School in Beaufort, SC. Felisha Major, Class of 2005, received the Master of Healthcare Administration from Walden University in December. Tamara Pinckney, Class of 2009, married Drake Holmes, Class of 2011, on September 8, 2012. The couple live in Charleston, SC. Dennis C. Brock ‘70 passed away April 19, 2013 in Kingstree, SC. He taught for more than 29 years in the Williamsburg County School District. An ordained minister, he was the pastor of Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church in Alcolu, SC and president of the Williamsburg County Alumni Chapter at the time of his passing. Daphine Bryant-James ‘80 passed away June 15, 2013 in Augusta, GA. A certified substance and alcohol abuse counselor, she loved helping people and encouraging victims of substance abuse in overcoming their addictions. Lottie B. Davis ‘45 passed away March 8, 2013 in Wedgefield, SC. A retired educator, she taught for 33 years in Sumter School District Two. She was credited with, along with her surviving husband, Roland H, Davis, Jr., the initiation and construction of the Delaine Community Center.

Jasper Eaddy ‘55 passed away March 9, 2013 in Marion, SC. He was a former member of the Marion County Council and its chairman from 1992-1994. A retired educator, he taught more than 33 years in Marion School District Two, Mullins, SC.

Vonnie Godbolt Finkley ‘64 passed away February 19, 2013 in Myrtle Beach, SC. She was a retired educator in the Horry County School District.

Harry Gathers, Jr. ‘52 passed away March 3, 2013 in Baltimore, MD. He became an entrepreneur and had a passion for real estate, business, and the work of the church. Willie Frank Graves ‘81 passed away April 15, 2013 in Charleston, SC. A U. S. Marines veteran, he was retired from the South Carolina Employment Security Commission in Marion, SC. He was an ordained minister and was the pastor of Union A. M. E. Church in Lake View, SC at the time of his passing. Helen F. Hudson ‘52 was funeralized December 17, 2012 in Loris, SC. She was a retired educator in the Baltimore, MD school system where she taught for many years. She was an active member of the Baltimore Alumni Chapter. Clarence E. James ‘54 passed away June 2, 2013 in Washington, DC. A strong supporter, he was the longtime president of the Washington Alumni Chapter. Marie F. Kennedy ‘40 passed away June 11, 2013 in Sardinia, SC. She was employed by Clarendon School District Three until she retired. William P. Martin passed away March 1, 2013 in Sumter, SC. He attended the college after graduating from Lincoln High School in 1941. Nancy Davis McClinton ‘64 passed away July 9, 2013 in Atlanta, GA. She was a former

math teacher in the Atlanta school system and a retired manager with BellSouth. She was an active member of the Atlanta Alumni Chapter. Viola G. Neal ‘49 passed away July 3, 2013 in Sumter, SC. A retired educator, she was an elementary school teacher in Clarendon I School District for more than 30 years. Julia R. Pearson ‘52 passed away on August 11, 2013 in Sumter, SC. She was employed as a nurse’s aid, and was a loving homemaker for her family.

Friends of the College Earnest Lester Cain was funeralized May 31, 2013 in Greenwood, SC. He was a supporter of the college as a pastor and moderator. Dr. Richardson represented the college at the services. Raymond Carolina was funeralized March 14, 2013 in Columbia, SC. He was a supporter of the college as a pastor and moderator. He is among the three mentors named on the new physical maintenance building built by Dr. Solomon Jackson, Jr. William Gamble, Jr. was funeralized April 20, 2013 in Greenville, SC. He was a supporter of the college as a pastor and moderator. He pastored Lincoln Grove Baptist Church at the time of his passing.

Mary Bell Gillard passed away July 20, 2013 in Columbia, SC. A native of Sumter, her teaching career spanned more than 33 years with Sumter School District Two and Clarendon School District Two. Dr. Richardson gave reflections during her funeral and spoke of the many years she served Camp Julia a. Starks/Dunbar-Gandy as an instructor. Harvin Gilbert Grant passed away March 24, 2013. A resident of Rembert, SC, he served faithfully as a deacon at Grant Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Dalzell, SC. He was the husband of Mrs. Gladys M. Grant.

Juanita R. Roland passed away February 26, 2013. A native of Blackville, SC, she was an exemplary educator for more than 36 years. She was the widow of the late Reverend Harold Roland. Dr. Richardson, a friend of the family, gave expressions during her “service of triumph.” Eunice Outen Abney Thompson passed away July 10, 2013 in Atlanta, GA. A dedicated member of First Baptist Missionary Church, Sumter, she was a strong supporter of the college and an outstanding fundraiser. She was preceded in death by her first husband, the Reverend James J. Abney and later her second husband, Mr. Everett Thompson. Dr. Richardson gave reflections during her funeral.

From capital development projects funded with the assistance of UNCF Campaign 2000 funds to resources provided to further strengthen instructional programs, Morris College can certainly testify to Dr. Gray’s commitment and capabilities as a leader.
