VICTORIOUS VOTE Tennessee was pivotal in establishing women’s suffrage. Just how did it come down to the last vote?

©TENNESSEE STATE LIBRARY & ARCHIVES. OPPOSITE: ©JEJIM/SHUTTERSTOCK

BY MARY SKINNER

August 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of American women winning the right to vote. It was Tennessee’s deciding vote, on August 18, 1920, that ratified the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The hard-fought battle for the ballot began in Seneca Falls, New York in 1848, where a women’s rights convention took place, and ended in victory 72 years later in the legislative chambers of the Tennessee State Capitol. Tennessee women of different races and economic backgrounds worked alongside women from national organizations to persuade state legislators to pass the amendment.

WAR OF THE ROSES In the early 1900s, Tennessee suffragists marched for women’s voting rights in communities across the state wearing the colors adopted by the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA)—white and golden yellow. These colors stood for purity and hope, respectively,

and were used during parades. They carried golden yellow banners which they created to express the spirit of the movement. Later, yellow roses became an emblem of the suffrage cause. In contrast, the anti-suffragists adopted red roses as their symbol. What ensued was a “war of the roses.” By August 1920, the spotlight was on Nashville, where the final battle for women’s voting rights would take place. The 19th Amendment was just one state shy of ratification, with 35 states having already passed it. American women needed Tennessee’s vote to make it the “Perfect Thirty-Six.” A special session of the Tennessee legislature was called and members of the General Assembly “showed their colors” by wearing roses on their lapels. The battle came down to one man: Harry T. Burn of Niota, Tennessee, who had a red rose pinned to his lapel, but changed his mind and his vote. As the famous story is often told, Burn was influenced by a letter from his mother, Febb Ensminger Burn. She urged him to “be a good boy” and vote WHERET RAV EL ER ® G UEST B OOK

A LEGACY OF TENNESSEE WOMEN SUFFRAGISTS Although many Tennessee women worked diligently in support of the women’s suffrage cause, several leaders are now recognized in monuments and historic markers across the state in honor of their victorious pursuits. Nashvillebased artist Alan LeQuire has been commissioned to do portraits of many of these Tennessee suffrage leaders. It began in 1995, after the 75th Anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, when the Tennessee Arts Commission secured funding to create artwork to honor the state’s role in this historic event. LeQuire’s concept was selected for a commemorative piece of art for the Tennessee State Capitol. The bronze bas-relief shows a female “who is every woman,” LeQuire explains. “She is waving a flag and rising up over a sea of disinterested men.” Since the completion of this work, LeQuire has been commissioned to sculpt 19 suffragist portrait statues across the state. In preparation of the 2020 centennial celebration, LeQuire was commissioned to create a suffrage monument 30

for Nashville. Unveiled in 2016 in Centennial Park, it features five women who were involved in the final 1920 ratification battle in Nashville. They are: • Anne Dallas Dudley of Nashville, who came from a prominent Nashville family and became a national and state leader in the women’s suffrage movement; • Abby Crawford Milton of Chattanooga, suffragist leader and first president of the League of Women Voters of Tennessee; • J. Frankie Pierce of Nashville, daughter of a slave, who was known for her organizational skills as a suffragist and educator; • Sue Shelton White of Jackson, a feminist leader, who served as a national leader of the women’s suffrage movement, and editor of The Suffragist; • National suffrage leader Carrie Chapman Catt, who was included because of the important role she played directing the pro-suffrage forces from her rooms at The Hermitage Hotel. LeQuire did extensive historical research for all of the portraits, including making replicas of the suffrage banners from the collection of the Tennessee State Museum. “The lives of each woman was a beautiful, complicated story,” he says.

Q&A

A STUDY IN SCALE Sculptor Alan LeQuire and Nashville will be forever intertwined, thanks to his larger-than-life works and thoughtful bronzes. Here, LeQuire discusses his sculptures, his process and more. INTERVIEWED BY JENNIFER MCKEE

What initially piqued your interest in sculpture?

I always made things as a child. My mother was an art teacher, so I have to credit her with putting the tools in front of me. When did you realize it was

It was either that or medical school (my father was a doctor), and I went with my heart and with sculpture. I knew I had to make a living, but at that point, I was just trying to learn as much as I could about the skills of making the kind of sculpture I wanted to make. What led you to “Athena”?

I spent my entire senior year of college in France and had my first-ever exhibit there, in ’78. After I left France, I did a yearlong apprenticeship in Italy. I came back to the states and went to graduate school. There I found out about the competition to recreate the lost statue of Athena, so I put in my application. I was surprised when I won it. I think I did because I had already done work that was sort of Neoclassical, and people saw that in my work.

It wasn’t until the end of my college career that I made the decision to try to be a sculptor.

completion did the project take?

Seven and a half years—from November 1982 to May 1990.

How much freedom did you have in interpreting “Athena”?

I worked with archaeologists throughout the project. I was comparing the opinion of several archaeologists, and I would build my model and the details based on what they told me. But in instances where they disagreed, I had freedom to make my own choice. The archaeologists actually encouraged me to follow my own vision. During your work on “Athena,” what’s the most important thing you learned about your craft

do that over and over. What it left me with was a feeling for the material that I use every day. It’s a dexterity with the material that I still enjoy. How do you approach a new sculpture or new commission?

I always start with pencil and paper and draw it out. That helps me hold it in my head. I try to draw it from all sides. In order to sculpt anything in three dimensions, you really need to know your dimensions, so I try to conceive of all that before I actually begin working.

that you still carry with you today?

If you had a dream project, what

I chose to do her in traditional techniques: modeling in clay, making plaster molds, then chiseling the mold away. It’s very labor-intensive, and five times longer than modeling it directly. Each section of her body was modeled in clay using six to eight tons of clay. There was no machinery involved, you pick up a piece of clay, you put it where it’s supposed to go and

would it be?

I would like to create a new interpretation of the female figure. To the sculptors I apprenticed with, the history of sculpture that I studied, the female figure is the basis of everything. Only 394 of the 5,193 public statues depicting historic figures are of women. I’m trying to bridge that gap, and I want to continue to do that.

©LEQUIRE GALLERY

The son of an art teacher, Nashville native Alan LeQuire developed his artistic skills at an early age, playing with his mother’s wood-carving tools and apprenticing with local sculptors. After college he studied in France and Italy, then returned to the United States for graduate school. It was then he applied to work on what today is among his bestknown sculptures: “Athena Parthenos,” inside Nashville’s Parthenon replica. He has worked on suffragette sculptures not only for Nashville, but for locations throughout Tennessee.

Alan LeQuire’s masterpiece, “Athena Parthenos,” took him seven and a half years to sculpt. It’s located inside the replica of The Parthenon in Centennial Park.

Country music and beer are best friends. Here’s a look at the local breweries that help make Music City sing. BY MARGARET LITTMAN

From Luke Combs’ “Beer Never Broke My Heart” to Hank Williams’ “There’s a Tear in my Beer” to Tom T. Hall’s “I Like Beer,” there is no shortage of country songs about beer. So, it should be no surprise that Nashville has not only songs about beers, but a city filled with craft breweries making beers worth singing about. No, Nashville doesn’t have the reputation of a beer city like Portland or Seattle— yet—but it has the ales to go with its tall tales. 34

When it comes to local drinking, you probably think of Tennessee whiskey before you think of Nashville beer. Well, Tennessee Brew Works has a beverage for you. “We are the first and only brewery George Dickel has partnered with so that we can make a barrel-aged beer,” says Christian Spears, founder and president of Tennessee Brew Works. Tennessee-based distillery George A. Dickel (worth a drive in the country if you want to go on a tour) gives

and his partners think you should eat a slice of pizza: folded in half. Hakanson likes to brew beers of different styles so that folks can come and learn more about their tastes and favorites. Variety is on the menu at TailGate Brewery, too, which has three locations in Nashville, with more than 40 beers on tap, tapping two new beers each week. TailGate listens to what the people want. Originally the team brewed a lime lager (think of it like a craft-beer answer to Corona) which was intended only to last for that summer. A decade later it is still on the menu and is TailGate’s best seller, according to marketing manager Liz Tarry. The brewery also partnered with local hot chicken purveyor Party Fowl to make Dill With It, a dill pickle Kölsch beer only available at Party Fowl restaurants. This was a good fit as TailGate is known for being willing to experiment, Tarry says. Their popular peanut butter milk stout won a best experimental beer award in 2015. There’s also a Breakfast Cereal IPA and a prosecco cider on the menu. Similar partnerships pop up across town. Jackalope

Tennessee Brew Works barrels which they use to make both a porter and a Belgian-style Quad, each of which pick up tastes from the wood of the barrels. Tennessee Brew Works takes its state heritage seriously, and that doesn’t just mean whiskey. As much as possible Spears sources ingredients locally, even using some Tennessee-grown grains. The brewery makes the official beer of the Tennessee State Parks plus specialties that honor achievements in state, including a number of musicthemed beers. The taproom itself is known for its live music (subject to restrictions due to coronavirus) and Spears is proud to be a leader in what he calls Nashville’s “dynamic” craft beer scene. There are more than 20—and growing— local breweries around town; see sidebar for more info. Tennfold Brewery in Donelson is the closest brewery to the Nashville airport and is perfect for your first in-town stop or your last out-of-town stop. Its focus is on the food as much as the beer. “Really good pizza,” owner Hunter Hakanson says, is paired with Tennfold’s IPAs and other beers. In fact, the name is in part a nod to the proper way he

Brewing Co. teamed up with Von Elrod’s Beer Hall & Kitchen, near the First Horizon baseball stadium, to create a locally brewed “Neighborhood Pilsner.” A portion of the sale of Neighborhood Pilsner benefits local neighborhood organizations and charities. “Our mantra is ‘beer is community,” says Anthony Davis, president of East Nashville Beer Works. Davis is a former Nashville city councilmember and a beer lover who built his brewery to be a family-friendly space with a big patio and that is a hangout for locals. Unlike at Tennessee Brew Works, East Nashville Beer Works doesn’t host live music. “We don’t do it purposefully because we want to have predictably good tunes on the stereo system.” Davis likes seeing

more breweries open, in part since he likes exploring them on his own, and also for the reason that they are helping to build a community through beer. Chanda Grubbs of Bearded Iris Brewing agrees. “Nashville’s craft beer scene is unique in that we have several well-regarded and long-standing breweries who very much founded the scene here and remain important fixtures in our city and our industry. We also have several newer breweries (and more on the way) who seem to constantly be pushing the envelope with what they’re releasing. That infuses this really wonderful creative energy into our city. Each Nashville brewery seems to have its own area of expertise or preference for style.”

WHERE TO GO There are local breweries across all of Nashville, so no matter what neighborhood you’re staying in, you can find one (or more) to explore. Below is a list to help you out. Remember to walk, call a rideshare or pick a designated driver if you plan to sample. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, many breweries have made adjustments to their offerings.
