Once upon a time, getting married meant rocking a diamond ring, a white dress, a uffy veil and of course, a black tux for him Now, the rules surrounding wedding fashion, and what that means have of cially started to shift. Couples today are really rethinking what ‘traditional’ means, in more ways than just the fashion. I love seeing couples gravitating towards styles that feel unique to them and that express their individuality. Honestly, it’s wonderful to see this approach applied to all aspects of the planning process.

As someone who has been part of the wedding industry for almost 25 (!) years, I’ve been fortunate to have been a part of so many thoughtful, intentional gatherings. More often that not, I found myself deeply moved at my clients’ events. Yes, I was the one sending the bride down the aisle with teary eyes. I’m sure part of it was knowing that this was just one small step, the rst in their journey together. It’s why I love going through all the submissions for our real weddings feature. It’s easily one of my favorite tasks in crafting each issue of the magazine. I love reading the responses of the featured couples, especially the small details; the rain on a wedding day, a sleep over with just mom the night before, shooting pool with the guys before they send their friend down the aisle. Those are the stories that stay with me and inspire me. Wedding day details are beautiful and can be so meaningful, but marriage is the really fun part. Sitting on the couch binge watching Net ix shows, cooking dinner together, and long-awaited weekend adventures. Those really do end up being the big things and are the most important details in your life together.

So even now, as you are planning for your wedding day, I hope that you will take some time to look forward to your future, and as you are reading this in preparation for your own big day, I hope that the details, information, and advice that our featured couples shared will inspire you to create a most amazing celebration that kicks off your journey together.

Working behind the scenes CONTRIBUTORS

1. ZACH DALIN

Zach Dalin Photography

Zach Dalin, published and award-winning wedding photographer based in St. Louis, has received much recognition for his work in wedding and engagement portraits, but his career experience has many different dimensions that enhance his current work. He assisted on his rst wedding in 2013; and fast forward almost a decade later, his images have been featured in several prominent national and local magazines.

All of Zach’s work is in uenced by his other career experiences, including his time working with major television and press outlets such as CBS and USA Today to name a few. His photojournalist experience taught him to work fast on his feet and capture those magical moments that will be cherished for generations to come.

2. CECE HESLIN

Celebrations by CeCe

The “it’s about the guys”’ focus in this issue is essential and timely, especially as more grooms want to actively participate in the planning process. Their wedding day should be one of the best days of their lives too! I love when grooms attend meetings, ask questions, and share their opinions. We’re not just creating an incredible day to celebrate the couple’s love; we’re building a foundation for their marriage. I love when both partners are involved and excited! From the fashion and accessories to the mood of the photographs and the venue space itself, this issue is for the guys too!"

My passion for weddings and events began over a decade ago as a college intern where I fell

in love with the industry. A perfectionist at heart, I ensure every detail is intentional, and everything goes according to plan!

3. RANDY SHAMEL

Artistry Florist and Event Design

Randy has been designing award-winning orals as the lead designer + owner of Artistry Florist and Event Design since 1984. His passion for beautiful orals and all of the details have been bringing cherished memories to thousands of brides for 40 years. Creating oral designs that make so many people happy is such a joy and an honor.

4. LISA LIPSITZ

Looks by Lisa

A professional makeup artist with over 30 years of industry experience, and over 2000 happy brides, I have had the pleasure of being on several Pro Artistry Teams such as Bobbi Brown, Givenchy, Laura Mercier, Smashbox Cosmetics and I hold an advanced certi cation from Temptu Studios in Los Angeles. Looks by Lisa was born out of my love of makeup and how to use it to enhance a woman’s natural beauty. We are now in our 20th year and have an incredible team of the most experienced hair and makeup stylists in St.Louis. I love sharing in a bride’s wedding day and have kept in touch with so many of them in the last 20 years. I’m proud to share that this is my fth Saint Louis Bride editorial and I couldn’t be more thrilled and excited to be a part of it!

5. CHELSEA PERNICIARO

Looks by Lisa

A lead stylist on the Looks by Lisa team for

7 years, Chelsea’s love for hair began during her time as a competitive dancer where she learned the value of a well paired costume and hairstyle. With over a decade of experience both behind the chair and in the wedding industry, Chelsea has created a culture for her clients where they can expect to leave feeling cherished, beautiful and heard. She remains dedicated to mastering her craft and staying current on the latest trends. It is through her passion that she can do so effortlessly in an ever-evolving beauty industry.

6. KELLY SPENCER

The Dogwood in the Grove

Kelly Spencer started The Social Affair Catering and Event Design with humble beginnings in 2009. Her culinary journey would start decades earlier as a little girl learning to cook alongside her Southern Grandmothers, rolling out biscuits and frying chicken in Birmingham, AL. Paired with her Mom and Dad’s love of entertaining, she knew from an early age the joys, and importance, of bringing friends and family together around the table. Instilled with the hallmarks of Southern hospitality (grace, charm, good home cooking) and an effortless style, Kelly seemed destined to build a career out of hosting a great party!

Her bustling catering company and modern venue, The Dogwood in The Grove, are a far cry from the humble beginnings 15 years ago, but at their core are still a representation of the values ingrained in Kelly’s heart and soul: welcoming people with grace to gather around food cooked with love and celebrate life’s best moments.

THE STYLED LAPEL

While we do love a lapel adorned with a beautiful bloom, it’s time to think outside the box and opt for another component that expresses your personality and style. If you’re a groom looking to forgo tradition, swap the classic oral for a lapel pin or a vintage brooch, like those pictured above, or go big with a oral pocket square. We LOVE a creative boutonniere, oral or not that adds that nishing touch to the groom’s look.

THE LITTLE DETAILS

It’s all about personalizing your wedding! Think about personalizing your wardrobe by adding elements like their partner’s name, wedding date, favorite quote, song lyrics, custom boots and more. We love nothing more than to see the incorporation of a family heirloom in your wedding out t. When you include something signi cant like a vintage watch, or piece of jewelry, it’s an excellent way to honor loved ones on your big day.

BOURBON + BUBBLES

There’s nothing like celebrating with your favorite spirit! We love that couples included bottles that were meaningful to them to mark the occasion, toast and celebrate, and talk about a fun gift for your attendants, we love Anthony’s personalized steins! Speaking of bourbon, there’s the myth of “burying the bottle”. There are couples that swear by the southern tradition to ensure a beautiful sunny wedding day. The couple must visit their venue exactly a month before the wedding date and bury a full bottle of bourbon upside down. Yes, it must be full, and it must be upside down. The size or origin of the bourbon doesn’t seem to matter, but if you feel Mother Nature might be a bourbon lover, certainly opt for the next size up! When your wedding day rolls around, you’re supposed to dig up your bottle after your ceremony and share a drink with your wedding party.

TO-GO WEDDING-CAKE SLICES AND DESSERT STATIONS

Skip the actual table service, and pass slices to those guests who want them, and for the rest, add custom to-go boxes to a station for your guests to grab on their way out. This will ensure the dance oor stays full and the late-night revelers satisfy their midnight cravings.

A small, intimate wedding ceremony was held in Telfair Square, Savannah GA in August 2022. My husband, Ryan, was stationed at Fort Stewart. We were married during his enlistment. We waited until after his army enlistment to celebrate with a reception back home in the St. Louis area. At the reception we played a video of our wedding in Savannah. We started our reception with a cocktail hour and then had a lovely dinner. Next, spent the evening visiting with our guests and dancing. We even had a mechanical bull for our guests to ride! We ended our evening with late night pizza and then had a stunning sparkler and fireworks send off.”

We highly recommend a first look! We decided last minute to incorporate this and can’t imagine the day without it. It ended up being our favorite moment of the day. We did a Friday evening wedding because we wanted to get married on 3/15, our lucky number, and Fridays are for FUN!

We went non-traditional, did this entire thing together from the planning to the food and flowers. We debuted a new party box, had a costume change, did a rap battle with props scattered throughout the venue and grabbed our parents’ hands, much to their surprise, for their simultaneous father/mother dances.

Our officiant is a longtime friend, we told him 'anything goes' and he proed to be the star of the show, ending the ceremony with 'two claps and and a woooo!', Ric Flair style, totally unexpected and totally amazing

We chose to write our own vows and that was such a special, personal moment during our ceremony. All of our ‘firsts’ throughout the day were unique moments: Rather than a first look, we chose to do a first touch in front of the Noble vault door. After spending the morning and afternoon apart, that first touch was our ‘OMG this is really happening!’ moment. Our first dance with the indoor fireworks in the background was the most magical moment of the whole day. It was absolutely surreal, and, it set the tone for the entire rest of the night with so much energy and love radiating from the dance floor.”

Everything will not go as planned but that doesn’t mean it will ruin everything. Put your focus on the marriage and just enjoy your day together.”

We are a dual military couple both active duty Army Drill Sergeants who were serving at Fort Leonardwood, MO at the time of our wedding. Our Army chaplain wasn’t able to come last minute due to covid but, Asia’s childhood pastor showed up the morning of the wedding to ensure we were married. Special thanks to Reverend Clifton L. As a wedding planner who planned her own wedding, my biggest advice to couples is to ensure they do not lose themselves in the planning process. Make sure your wedding reflects you as people, individually and together. Make it yours, make it fun, make it unique!”

I’m a triplet of three girls and Josh is a twin of two boys! Both of their ‘wombmates’ lol were our best man and maids of honor. Growing up, Lauren and her sisters were known as ‘the Ziglets’ and identified by their colors. On the wedding day, Lauren had them be their ‘Something BLUE, PINK, and GREEN’ as a nod to the classic saying of something old, new, borrowed, and blue, and gifted her sisters matching shoes to her, each in their signature colors.”

Personalize your wedding for your own enjoyment. We both are big fans of Studio Ghibli, video games, and anime, so we had little things sprinkled throughout our wedding: a Totoro cake topper, a Stardew Valley lapel pin, Ghibli-themed photobooth props, soot sprite stickers on our favors, various theme songs playing in the background. We included door games in our pre-ceremony activities leading up to the first look. These games were a gauntlet of challenges that the groom has to undergo to see his bride. The games are facilitated by the bridesmaids, and the groomsmen are there to help the groom with the challenges. Although some of the games themselves were silly, these games represented part of our Taiwanese culture.”

Reflecting on our wedding planning journey, we would advise couples to prioritize what truly matters to them. It's easy to get caught up in the details, but at the end of the day, it's about celebrating your love and commitment. As overwhelming and stressful as it may seem, enjoy the process. All your hard work goes into one day that flies by. On the big day, look into your significant other's eyes and just take a big breath, for all those people who came are there to celebrate you and your love.”

My mom is my rock; she means everything to me. I wanted to find a way to thank her. I had my own first look with her, she walked me down the aisle with my dad, and added a mother-daughter dance. One of my favorite moments was my first look with my mom. I will forever cherish seeing her face light up and tears form in her eyes.”

One aspect we knew we wanted from the very start was to have a choreographed first dance. We wanted to make it special for us and exciting for the audience rather than watching two people swaying. We spent weeks choreographing and practicing our dance; enjoying many late evenings drinking wine and dancing in our living room. When it was showtime at the reception the nerves were high, but once we got started, everything else faded away. Suddenly we were dancing in our living room again, having a blast with our best friend.”

The Elevated Cocktail Recepton

By Megan Rubenstein
Photographed by Michelle Jahns Photography at The Chase Park Plaza and St. Louis Union Station

ACocktail hour may seem simple. It’s a time to mingle, have a bite to eat, and grab a drink at the bar before the “real party” starts — but for today’s couples, the cocktail hour is becoming more and more important. No longer a time for guests to simply stand and linger while waiting to be passed an hors d'oeuvre, couples are taking the cocktail hour up a notch to make the experience one that their guests will enjoy and remember.

We asked local venues and planners what couples are asking for in 2024 when it comes to the cocktail hour. They noted plenty of things that are coming, going, and here to stay — however they are based on the timeless idea of hosting an event that honors both the couple and their guests in a way that is engaging, personalized, and of course, delicious.

“While only 60 minutes long, the ‘cocktail hour’ isn’t just a space ller in your day, it’s truly a time to highlight your personal story,” local wedding planner Maureen Renée explains. “As a designer, we get to know our clients, focusing on touches of hospitality that make our guests feel welcomed, while also being uniquely curated to the couple we are celebrating.”

“Uniquely curated” sums up what was mentioned by all of the local vendors and planners we spoke with. Thoughtful personalization isn’t going anywhere.

Personalization starts with the food. Couples are prioritizing serving appetizers that they love and think their guests will, too.

“Couples are choosing to serve their favorite snacks, elevated,” said Patrick Whitener, Executive Chef at St. Louis Union Station Hotel. “For a groom that loves tomato soup and grilled cheese, we did a tomato soup shooter with a grilled cheese crouton garnish, a huge hit. For our couple that met at a local festival, we passed truf e parmesan fries and funnel cake fries in small cones.”

Local foods and hometown staples are also sticking around. Whether they are St. Louis classics or honor the culture of the bride or groom, it’s a way to make something as simple

as appetizers feel more meaningful.

“If the bride and groom are from St. Louis or one of them is from St. Louis, especially if they have a lot of out-of-town guests, they love to serve a toasted ravioli,” said Kay Flavin, Wedding Specialist at The Four Seasons. “I had a bride from the east coast so we served a crab cake. I had a groom from South Africa so we served a lamb appetizer. So just again, bringing in their heritage and background and again that personalized favorites of whatever the couple loves.

While couples seem to prioritize how the food tastes, how it looks is important to couples, too. Enhanced, interactive, and exciting presentation is something venues are incorporating more and more, both with passed hors d'oeuvres as well as serve-yourself stations.

“The cocktail hour serves as an introduction of the culinary experience to

However, couples are still loving all things bite-sized. The small bites can still be personal, according to Eric Phillips, Chef at the Chase Park Plaza. You Had Me

come,” said Whitener. He mentioned unique bites such as local cheese and charcuterie in a bamboo cone, hummus in a mini ower pot lled with crudités, and shrimp cocktail delicately placed over the side of a shot glass lled with cocktail sauce.

Lauren Zigman of LZ Event Co is seeing a different trend when it comes to cocktail hour food, and that trend is that the couple wants it to be, simply put, fun.

“Couples want something that people enjoy eating,” Zigman said. “We’re seeing elevated takes on bar food. They want the mac and cheese, they want the sliders. They want it to have more of that party aspect instead of just a classy type of bite.”

“We listen to what is important to the couple, whether it is a dietary restriction or a speci c food that they had on their rst date. I think it's important that we pay attention to that and try to incorporate that to make that day even more special for them,” Phillips said. “But regardless of what the food is, the feedback is that they want it bite-sized for a quick burst of avor.”

Such a wide variety of food trends were mentioned from passed hors d'oeuvres to sushi rolling stations, that it shows personalization really is key when it comes to the food. Couples should choose what makes the most sense for their celebration — they know themselves and their guests best!

Signature drinks are another trend that has been around for a while and isn’t going away anytime soon. However, couples are looking to take them to the next level.

“Instead of just choosing his & her favorites, try taking a new spin on the concept,” Maureen of Maureen Renée events

said. “Perhaps they’re themed from the rst vacation you took, like a Mai Tai for a tropical trip for a summer wedding, or something regional, like craft brews here in Saint Louis.”

Multiple wedding professionals mentioned a signature drink trend that’s been around for years now — naming a drink after the couples’ pet.

“That's a trend that's de nitely only been increasing,” Flavin said. “Most often I see his, hers, and theirs, and sometimes the ‘theirs’ is their animal. The bride and groom will each have a drink, and then they'll have a third drink that's like their couple drink, and a lot of times they'll integrate their dog or their cat that way.”

Haseeb Arain, Director of Catering & Convention Services at The Chase Park Plaza Royal Sonesta Hotel, also mentioned this trend, but another he brought up was not forgetting about the non-alcoholic beverages.

“We’re seeing a lot of cocktails. Not just sparkling water or sparkling grape juice, or things along those lines. Something outside

the box that is more of a unique concept,” Arain said. “We also can add little touches like edible owers or things along those lines to make them stand out.”

Accompanying the drinks are more personalized touches at the bar, such as drink stirrers and custom napkins.

“It’s de nitely all about personalization,” Flavin said. “I've seen custom napkins for the cocktail hour that have fun facts about the couple, which is super cute.”

While guests take time to nosh, couples are also considering their comfort more and more, whether it’s through adding seating or having a board game area for more introverted guests.

“I think one of the biggest things is that couples are thinking more about the guest experience overall,” Zigman said. “Sometimes with the guest experience, that isn’t always about the signature drink or personalization, because that's not always something that the guest looks for or cares about. They’re caring more about, are they happy? Are they

BOOTH

comfortable? Are they fed? The cocktail hour is supposed to be a nice, relaxing time of mingling and rejoicing after the ceremony, and I think clients are starting to consider how they can make it a comfortable environment and really prioritize that.”

“Activities and entertainment during the cocktail hour can help put more introverted guests at ease as well as make the hour feel more unique and personal to the couple. Musicians such as string quartets or even the band making a surprise early appearance, yard games such as cornhole for an outdoor cocktail hour, photo booths both simple and elaborate, and live painters are just some examples of what’s we"re seeing,” explained Ashlee Erlinger of Dream by Design.

“When it comes to photo booths, we're seeing a lot more companies bring things to the Midwest that we might have seen on the West Coast, like the 360 photo booth and a version of the glam bot that you see on the red carpets. That's a big thing now here,” Zigman said. “Another big thing is actually doing portraits of the guests, instead of a photo booth. You have an actual photographer there to take a legitimate portrait where the guests can be like, ‘oh, wow, that's a really nice photo of us.’ Another great one that one of my clients had that carried through the reception was a live watercolor artist that painted individual guests, so it was like a little takeaway. If she didn't nish all the guests that night, she still took photos of all the guests and then mailed them to the client to send to their guests after the wedding. That was such a lovely touch because it's so personal, it’s so different.“

Seating chart displays are also becoming more interactive. Gone are the days of the simple paper place card — now you can expect just about anything.

“The seating chart de nitely tends to be a moment because a lot of times they'll be interactive,” Flavin said. “Couples will integrate food and drink with it too, whether it's a champagne glass with their name on it or a chocolate box with their name on it. I had one bride who did bookshelves for her seating chart and she hand wrapped every book speci c to each guest, so guests found the book with their name and their table on

it and it was a book that she had picked out speci cally for them to read.”

Not only can seating charts be unique to the couple and their guests, but they can re ect the uniqueness of their venue, too.

“One couple had a train ticket booth constructed with live actors to greet and pass out escort cards to guests,” Whitener said. “Another had a wall with train station-esque clocks and tickets hanging from the board with vintage luggage stacked nearby.”

The decor in the cocktail hour space has also come to re ect the couple. While beautiful orals are all the rage right now, there are other trends that couples are choosing to implement to customize the room even more.

“The bar is a big moment, whether it’s a custom rented bar, custom shape, custom sign. I'm seeing it more and more,” Flavin said. “I think signage in some ways is going away, and instead you might have a big entry piece like a beautiful, colorful oral installation.”

Arain is also seeing cocktail hour signage fade out, and get replaced with something even more personal — life-size photos.

“A new trend, one of the things we are seeing at our hotel, would be the engagement pictures getting enlarged. Not just like a sign on an easel. These are life-size pictures that I’m talking about,” he said. “It's very glamorous in a way. I think, why not? It’s your day. Make it all about you.”

Most trends, from food and drink to decor and entertainment, focus on creating a memorable experience for the guests, but what about the focus of the night — the couple? In the past, a couple would often opt to miss their own cocktail hour to take photos after the ceremony. However, more and more couples are choosing to enjoy this aspect of their celebration that they worked so hard to perfect.

“Especially with my younger couples, it's very important to them to attend cocktail hour,” Zigman said. “A lot of times, that's sometimes their favorite food of the night,

especially if we're going with those fun bites, so they want to be able to attend. They want to be able to mingle with their guests, it’s a great time for them to go around and say hi to everyone. However, I feel like it's almost 50-50 with couples who want to stay alone, maybe with their own private dinner.”

Similarly, at the Chase Park Plaza couples are encouraged to see the cocktail hour with their own eyes, but some still choose to take the moment to spend time together as a couple. Regardless, the couple will get to enjoy the food they chose.

“It is our practice, regardless of if they're going to be part of the cocktail hour or not, our chefs will always have a platter prepared for them so they can enjoy the apps that the guests enjoyed along with sparkling wine and their signature cocktails,” said Phillips. “We have been encouraging our couples to be part of the cocktail hour, even just for a little bit. We also encourage our couples to go see the main room during the cocktail hour before the

guests are invited in for dinner and dancing and take that moment in.”

Ultimately, what do all of the most popular wedding trends have in common? Hometown foods, personalized drinks, petthemed accents, themed seating charts, and an emphasis on capturing moments through photos, painting, and the couple simply taking it all in, all connect in one important way. They all honor the unique relationship, identity, and story of the couple and the people in attendance who love them.

“My motto is play into your personality. When couples think about who they are and put that into their wedding day, it’s really special,” Zigman said. “I think couples are prioritizing that a lot more beyond just making things beautiful, and that’s something the guests really take away from the night. They walk away remembering, oh yeah, that was soand-so's wedding. That wasn't just a wedding. And I think the cocktail hour is one of the best ways to do that.

THE GUIDE TO

Just like the reception and the honeymoon, looking your best on your wedding day requires planning ahead. From starting a skin care routine six months in advance to scheduling a manicure two days before your wedding, our experts offer tips for both brides and grooms to look and feel their best on their wedding day.

ESTABLISH A SKIN CARE ROUTINE

If you aren’t taking care of your skin, you need to establish a skin care regimen at least six months before your wedding.

“Makeup only looks as good as the skin underneath it,” says Lisa Lipsitz, Owner, Looks by Lisa & Co. “Foundation doesn’t x everything and piling on makeup is not optimal. It’s important not to have a lot of texture which means you need to remove makeup every night and exfoliate regularly.”

An effective skin care routine does not have to be complicated or expensive. Wash your face with cleanser and moisturize every morning and before going to bed. Tone and exfoliate once a week. Use quality products that address needs like oily, dry, acne prone, or aging skin. If you are unsure what type of products to use, many retailers offer online questionnaires or in-store personnel to assist or reach out to your makeup artist for tips.

HAIRCUT

Keeping your hair in good shape leading up to the wedding is a priority. Do your regular maintenance so your hair is in its best condition. When scheduling haircuts or treatments, look ahead to make sure your appointments coincide properly with your big day. Consider the proper schedule for highlights, color, or covering grey hair.

Sandra Lee, Owner of Sandra Lee Hair Design, recommends brides talk with their stylist about their vision for their wedding aesthetic.

“Are you thinking about wearing your hair down, half up, vintage pin up or more of a bohemian style? That can in uence how we cut your hair, whether we let it grow or how we color it,” says Sandra Lee.

Avoid making drastic changes that could damage your hair. If you’ve never worn bangs before, now is not the time to try them. If you are considering extensions, talk with your stylist about proper preparation. Keep your hair color consistent.

“Any dramatic changes need to happen as far away from the wedding as possible,” says Sandra Lee.

Be realistic about the type of hair you have and what styles work best for you, keeping in mind weather conditions. Consider sampling products in advance that you might want to use on your wedding day, such as humidityproof products for summer.

Grooms should nd a regular stylist or barber if they don’t currently have one. Give your stylist a chance to get to know your hair, your preferences, and your needs.

“Guys are terrible about openly discussing that they have a wedding coming up, unlike women. I can’t tell you how many guys tell us at their haircut that they are getting married in the upcoming days. Get that conversation going ahead of time. You don’t want to get a haircut two days before your wedding. Two weeks of growth is best, especially for pictures,” says Jody Lee, Manager and Master Stylist at 18|8 Fine Men’s Salons.

Men also should plan ahead if they are considering coloring hair or beards or enhancements to improve hair density. Depending on your hair type you may prefer the results a few days after the treatment. Trying these services ahead of time will allow you to schedule appropriately for your wedding. ©ALEKSANDRA KONOPLYA/ADOBESTOCK

A simple skin care routine should also be a priority for the groom. Regular cleansing can help reduce issues such as acne and blackheads. Hair and Makeup Artist Nory Beebe also reminds men in particular to wear sunscreen leading up to the big day.

“I can’t stress enough how important it is to wear sunscreen. I once had a groom show up with a sunburn around his sunglasses from spending the day before the wedding on a golf course,” says Beebe.

TEETH

MANICURE AND PEDICURE

The manicure in particular is a must for both the bride and groom with all the hand shaking and ring admiring at the wedding reception. Keep in mind that hands will be photographed as well. Both should schedule an appointment to have their nails done two days prior to the wedding. For the bride, experts recommend choosing a quality gel polish as they are durable and stay glossy longer than basic polishes. For the groom, a trim, le and buff will have hands camera ready. Keep your hands hydrated and use cuticle oil to keep your hands looking freshly manicured.

FACIAL HAIR

For the groom, facial hair should be neatly trimmed. Don’t make drastic changes leading up to the big day. If you’ve consistently had a beard, keep it for the wedding. Be sure to trim and condition regularly.

A day-of appointment for men is a great way to clean up areas such as the neck and sideburns. As a full-service men’s salon, 18|8 offers services to groom and shape eyebrows and remove ear and nose hair.

A classic straight razor shave with a hot towel and hot lather is a relaxing way to start your wedding day. If you’ve never had this service before, Lee suggests trying it ahead of time to make sure your skin isn’t irritated by the razor or products.

For women, eyebrows should be kept clean and natural. In the days leading up to the wedding, schedule an appointment for a full clean up, shaping and waxing.

“We always think of the gums as the frame in a beautiful piece of artwork. Everyone wants to look their best in photographs and having healthy gums is an important part of that,” says Chris Wolken, DDS, of Wolken Dental. “We recommend scheduling a cleaning a month or two prior to the wedding.”

For brides and grooms considering whitening, there are several options depending on your budget and time frame. Over-the-counter kits tend to be inexpensive but provide the weakest results. If you have a few months, at-home whitening kits are affordable and impactful. The dentist makes trays custom t to your teeth that are used to apply professional whitening gel at home. Trays are used frequently at rst to achieve desired results and then less often for maintenance.

In-house whitening is a quicker solution that is performed in the dentist of ce with similar results as at-home kits. Wolken recommends scheduling in-house whitening several weeks prior to the wedding in case of teeth sensitivity.

“If you are in a time crunch, in-house whitening will get the desired results typically in one two-hour appointment,” says Wolken.

Keeping up with regular dental health will help identify any issues with the teeth and gums that may require more extensive work. Restorative procedures such as veneers can take months to perfect. Consult with your dentist ahead of time to avoid rushing treatments and spending money without getting the desired results.

DIET AND EXERCISE

The months leading up to a wedding are hectic and stressful and can take a toll on your body. Try to make regular workouts a priority. Simply taking a walk every day can help keep your mind and body in a good place. Be aware of the foods you are putting in your body and stay hydrated. If diet and exercise are not giving the results you want, noninvasive therapies are available to help with weight loss, toning and tightening.

“We can help people get the results that gong to the gym alone can’t achieve. Brides come to us wanting to look the best in their dress, particularly if they are wearing a formtting gown.” Says Jacqi Bennett, founder of Eden Wellness.

Treatments such as cryo sculpting and weight loss injections are available for both men and women. Since these services require multiple sessions and vary based on the individual, it is best to meet with a consultant four to six months prior to the wedding for best results.

“People who exercise and eat right can still have stubborn pockets of fat that we are able to reduce, through our services,” says Kate Schoemehl, owner of Metro Med Spa. “It’s best to start six months in advance to allow for multiple sessions and to see full results.”

FACIALS AND TREATMENTS

Cosmetic procedures such as facials can help improve the appearance of the skin and leave a smooth, glowing canvas for your makeup artist. Most can be done in the weeks leading up to the wedding. To address issues such as skin discoloration or aging, consider setting up a treatment plan early.

Metro Med Spa offers Bridal Bundles that feature hydrafacial deluxe treatments, customized skincare treatments and discounts on injectables.

“We recommend booking a complimentary consultation with one of our aestheticians or nurses to come up with a plan leading up to the wedding. We offer both three-month and six-month options for bridal bundles,” says Schoemehl.

Jody Lee recommends that grooms try a facial treatment at 18|8 Salons that includes in-depth cleansing, exfoliation, hydration and rejuvenation. This relaxing service also includes a neck, shoulder and scalp massage. And it’s all done in the comfort of a men’s salon.

For mothers of the bride and groom, Eden Wellness offers services including cryo facials and micro needling that help reduce wrinkles, tighten skin, and boost collagen and elastin. These procedures typically require multiple visits for best results and should be started several months prior to the wedding.

Whether you need to maintain your healthy glow or address problem areas, planning ahead and maintaining a regular routine of skin care, hair care, and exercise will set you up to look your best on your wedding day.

“Stay true to the essence of who you are,” says Sandra Lee. “At the end of the day, you want to be the best version of yourself on your wedding day.”

Spirits in St. Louis

Order up these local treasures for your wedding celebrations and let the good times begin

There’s no doubt that cocktails and the spirits that de ne them are having a moment. The popularity and appreciation of bourbon, gin, whiskey, rum and tequilawhether consumed straight or in creatively mixed concoctions-continues to grow. But it may be a surprise to some that St. Louis boasts nationally-respected experts and awardingwinning spirits made right here at home.

THE NATIONALLY-RESPECTED EXPERT

Patrick “Pops” Garrett, a St. Louis native and former digital marketing professional, is passionate about bourbon and loves sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm with others. He started Bourbon and Banter, a nationally-revered digital magazine in 2011, to bring together enthusiasts and share curiosity and conversation about bourbon (bourbonbanter.com). When the pandemic hit, he offered virtual bourbon tastings with his business DrinkCurious (drinkcurious.com). That led to in-person gigs across the country, from bachelor parties to corporate events and in-home celebrations.

“In the past 15 years, bourbon has been recognized as a crafted, meticulously-created spirit,” Garrett said. “Especially after the pandemic, there’s a hunger to return to things that are real and to engage in authentic experiences. We can guide and educate people about what they are drinking in a highly entertaining way. It’s a great social experience.”

There are several ways Garrett and his DrinkCurious team conduct in-person tastings. “We can do a Classic Tasting, that is seated, informative and educational, with a bourbon wheel and visual aids to help people understand avors,” Garrett said. Seated tastings are more popular for parties, such as one DrinkCurious hosted in Chicago for a birthday surprise party with 25 guests. They curated a ight of oneof-a-kind single barrel bourbons, designing custom tasting mats and advising the client on food items for pairing.

Popular for bachelor and bachelorette parties and wedding receptions, Garrett also offers a Curated Tasting Bar. A ight of four or ve different spirits, accompanied by attractive visuals, is poured with a shot of knowledge by experts about what the Sprits

Sprits in St. Louis

guests are tasting. The curated bar is open throughout the event and perfect for guests to enjoy while they mix and mingle.

Do you have to know much about spirits before a tasting? Absolutely not, says Garrett. “At DrinkCurious, we believe that to live an interesting life, you need to be curious about what you eat and drink. We are about helping people understand what they are drinking. If they like it, great. If they don’t, that’s ne too. We want them to have an understanding of what they like, and more importantly, what they don’t like. As you move forward in life, every sip is going to be a little bit better. “

A Blind Tasting makes things especially entertaining for both the a cionados and the novices in the group. Garrett said, “With our double-blind tasting, you don’t see the labels. Regular whiskey drinkers usually have preconceived notions-we don’t want them to see a bottle we put on the table and immediately turn up their nose. Plus, it’s fun and engaging when they try something blind and don’t really like it, and it turns out to be the one they regularly buy. With a blind tasting, guests can really focus on their taste buds.”

DrinkCurious offers tastings of all styles of whiskey, gin and tequila-the latter can be fun for a Mexican-themed evening or for a family with Mexican heritage. However, Garrett is stacking up the bourbon converts. “I did a tasting at a senior living community,” Garrett said. “Two women told me they never liked bourbon, but they just came to the tasting to be with their friends. By the end of the evening, they said I had turned them into bourbon drinkers. I believe

it’s about having the right experience and the knowledge and the passion shared. Everyone can become a bourbon drinker-or a tequila drinker or a scotch drinker.”

Garrett and his team can kick-off a night out for a bachelor or bachelorette party with a tasting before the group heads out to hit the town or be the destination for an entire night. A tasting would be a popular part of a couples’ shower, or a fun addition to an engagement party or rehearsal dinner. Garrett also has expertise working with chefs at reception venues to pair spirits and cocktails with the wedding menu.

One of Garrett’s satis ed customers was quite impressed with the DrinkCurious tasting she booked for an event. ““Pops” exceeded our expectations,” she said. “We have participated in a few wine tastings and the hosts were typically knowledgeable only about the particular vineyard or vintage we were tasting. Pops had a wealth of knowledge about the history of bourbon, the processes in making it and an overall knowledge of all types of bourbon, so you weren’t just exposed to a brand that he was promoting. His presentation was well- organized and enjoyable and entertaining from start to nish. Even as a non-bourbon drinker, I enjoyed the experience immensely.”

THE AWARD-WINNING DISTILLER

St. Louis has long been known as a beer town, but there’s a distillery making award-winning spirits right in the shadow of the Gateway Arch. StiL630 began in 2011 and has been piling up the accolades ever since. Owner and

founder David Weglarz was inspired by his love of spirits to create something that he enjoyed making and others loved consuming. “To make something with my own hands and see people love it is so satisfying,” Weglarz said. “It’s really my American dream.”

There’s a lot behind the name StiL630. “StiL”for distillery, with “S“and “L” for St. Louis and “il” for Illinois. It was founded on June 30 (6/30), and 630 is the serial number on their custom-made pot sill, a piece of distilling equipment. And, the height and width of the Gateway Arch is 630 feet.

StilL 630 embraces its location in downtown St. Louis and the history of our city, both in its exploratory efforts in constantly creating new avors and in its attractive labels that are a homage to The Gateway to the West. This makes their spirits an ideal gift for members of a wedding party. The Gateway Barreled Gin label shows the Arch and the ag of St. Louis, while the RallyPoint Straight Rye Whiskey label displays the Arch and Eads Bridge. The ultimate gift would be the Arch Pack, which includes the Expedition Rum, Con uence Gin and the RallyPoint. The tops of the bottles are adorned with the St. Louis skyline on them in silver. They also offer a Flight Box, six small bottles of their iconic whiskeys or a variety pack of whiskey, brandy, rum and gin.

But it’s not all about the cool bottles, of course. StilL 630 is ranked in the top four of craft distilleries in the United States and is the most awarded distillery in Missouri. They won the “best in class” award for their rum this year and “best in class” for their gin last

year, as well as many other top awards from the American Craft Spirits Awards and the American Distilling Institute. USA Today listed it as a top three best craft whiskey distillery in the country.

StilL 630 is open for Happy Hours every Friday night, during which visitors can try a ight of samples and the current experimental spirit they are working on, for which they appreciate feedback from the tasters. Happy Hour at the distillery could be a starting point for a bachelor or bachelorette party, or groups can book a private Grains to Glass Distillery Tour on Saturdays. They also offer Cocktail Classes, where participants make and enjoy three delicious cocktails. Weglarz said they have even held a small wedding on the back patio, amongst the barrels.

They say what’s old is new again, and that pertains to alcohol too. Previous generations enjoyed Old Fashioneds and Manhattans, and they are popular drinks once more. But they aren’t the same cocktails our grandparents had. “There are so many more options, avors and

colors to play with,” Weglarz said. He thinks that’s one reason StiL360’s rum and gin (the Con uence American Gin won the best craft gin in the country last year) are doing so well, because of their interesting and delicious avor combinations. They offer three avor pro les of gin: herbal, botanical and lemon pepper.

Many people who come into the distillery thinking they only like vodka leave as converts to more interesting spirits. “We try really hard to make spirits that are so delicious people can drink them straight, or with ice,” Weglarz said. “That may not be for everyone, but all of our spirits really shine in cocktails.”

Weglarz can provide custom cocktails created with the bride and groom using StilL630 spirits at a venue, and they also offer their products wholesale to caterers.

When entering the distillery, visitors see the wall of 2,500 bottles in their botanical library. “I imagine people are probably thinking-wow, these nerds are really taking this spirit-making thing seriously,” Weglarz joked. Weglarz and Andrew Spaugh, his right-hand man, are

serious about making high quality products, but they also have a contagious enthusiasm and are having a lot of fun.

The ultimate customized offering for a couple is the private barrel. “I sit with the couple and we taste many different avor pro les,” Weglarz. Based on what they like, we create a spirit just for them. It’s their own recipe, and their own barrel. The couple can have the empty barrel at the wedding for guests to sign. Then they can return every year, maybe on their anniversary to taste it for ve to ten years. Then when it’s ready, the couple gets their customized spirit in custom bottles.”

Whether it’s a bottle or a barrel, it means the world to Weglarz when people make StilL 630 a part of their wedding celebration. “When someone chooses to give our spirits as a gift for their wedding party, we feel so privileged to be a part of it,” said Weglarz. “To choose to give it to the most important people in their lives on the most important day of their life-there’s no higher honor.”

PERFECT PAIRINGS, BY THE BALLPARK

The Live! by Loews-St. Louis hotel is located in the heart of Ballpark Village, steps from Busch Stadium. It offers unique experiences for drinkers and for those who choose to imbibe less or not at all. And delicious foods to complement all of them.

Steven Hall, executive chef at Live! by Loews, has experienced the rise in popularity of spirits and people wanting to pair them with what they are eating. “People are also interested in incorporating the spirit into the dish,” Hall said. “We have developed some bolder avors to complement bourbon and whiskey, for example. We offer a le mignon with a whiskey demi-glaze, and smoked bourbon whiskey onions can serve as a component of the dish.”

Tequila is popular during the warmer months, and Hall said they offer dishes that also complement tequila, such as a avorful ceviche.

For smaller rehearsal dinners, the hotel offers The Whiskey Room, a private room located with its Clark & Bourbon restaurant. (The Whiskey Room comfortably seats 14). It’s also a great, private spot for a groom and his groomsmen during the wedding weekend. The Whiskey Room has 480 curated bottles of Rye, Irish, Scotch and Japanese Whiskies. Groups

can do whiskey tastings there, or tastings paired with food. Hall suggests sharable options for the pairings, such as their delicious smoked pulled pork sliders and smoked brisket empanadas. With the whiskey ights, guests can taste samples of four different whiskeys, both in The Whiskey Room and at the Clark & Bourbon restaurant. Headed to the Cardinals game for the bachelor or bachelorette party? Stop by for a ight and a bite before the game.

As popular as spirits are, there is also the trend of mindful consumption-those who prefer lower alcohol or no alcohol beverages. Loews Hotels just launched their Free Spirited program this April to offer creative cocktails for nondrinkers and light drinkers. “We’re excited to be able to offer guests a wide range of beverage options with the Free Spirited by Loews Hotels program,” said Greg Dyer, lead bartender for Clark & Bourbon at Live! by Loews – St. Louis. “As we start to see more and more guests requesting alternatives to traditional alcoholic beverages, this is a great way for us to provide truly unique drinking experiences without sacri cing quality and taste.”

Re ecting the availability of local suppliers, popular avors in the region and the creativity of the mixologists, guests can expect uniquely

pleasing options including a PineappleMatcha-Jito and a Strawberry + Hibiscus Spritz, both alcohol-free. Just as Chef Hall and his team thoughtfully pair spirits with the menu, the beverages in the Free Spirited program will seamlessly integrate into catering and event planning.

St. Louis is fortunate to have such nationallyknows, talented, hardworking experts right here to make unforgettable weddings happen. As Andew Spaugh of StilL 360 Distillery said, “We try to make the best possible spirits so you can have the best possible moment.”

An for an Extraordinary Day Extraordinary Couple

St. Louis vendors come together to host a wedding day for a bride and groom with an incredible love story

Kelly Spencer founded her catering company, The Social Affair, 15 years ago. She had a longheld desire to help others in an extraordinary way, wanting to bring good to the world using her expertise in her industry.

“I hoped for the chance to be able to turn a couple’s dream into a reality,” Spencer said.

“A couple that would especially appreciate the experience and might not be able to realize their wedding dreams on their own.”

Spencer opened her venue The Dogwood, in The Grove in St. Louis in August 2020. She had her catering company and a great space, and got to work calling local vendors to see if they would donate their services to a couple for a

free wedding celebration Spencer called “The Extraordinary Experience.” “Extraordinary because that is the mantra of my team and myself-to always go above and beyond in all ways,” Spencer said. “I wanted to make it an exceptional celebration that would be better than the couple could imagine.”

One couple that applied for The

Extraordinary Experience was Sean and Jen Bradshaw. Their original wedding was planned for November 2020. Because of the COVID pandemic, they postponed their celebration to May 15, 2021. Exactly two weeks before that wedding, they were in a car accident that left Jen paralyzed from the chest down. Wedding #2 was cancelled as Jen spent time in the hospital and at a rehabilitation facility.

“In February of 2022, we found out about The Extraordinary Experience being offered by Kelly at The Dogwood and Allissa Reimer of Altar’d Events,” Sean said. “And about all

the other amazing vendors that would be a part of it. We hoped to be chosen, but had no idea if we would.”

The Bradshaws met on an online dating app. But after about a week, Jen ghosted Sean. Three months later, they were matched again, on a different app. “Then I thought that maybe there was something to this, and we continued talking,” Jen said.

Jen loves how enthusiastic Sean is about life and everything that is important to him. “Sean is super passionate about family, his work, everything he wants to do,” said Jen. “He

gives it his all and makes it happen. He also feels that strongly about me.” Sean rst fell for Jen’s contagious, genuine smile. “Jen always wants to make sure everyone is having a good time. She’s such a positive light.”

For the interview for The Extraordinary Experience, Jen and Sean brought along Sean’s brother Patrick Bradshaw, whom they jokingly but accurately call their “Chief Hype Of cer” since he’s so supportive of the couple. During the interview, Patrick talked about how he learned that a Dogwood tree is a symbol of renewal. Having Jen and Sean’s

wedding at The Dogwood would be tting, as a new beginning for the couple. “Everyone there could feel the love of this couple,” Spencer said. “There was not a dry eye in the room after meeting Jen and Sean and hearing their story.”

Of course, the couple was thrilled to hear they had won The Extraordinary Experience and their celebration was at The Dogwood on February 4, 2023. “This was our third attempt at a wedding and I was exhausted from planning and making decisions,” Jen said. “This was perfect because the wonderful vendors were already built-in. Allissa [Reimer,

the wedding planner at Altar’d Events] made it so easy. Everything was phenomenal, from the food to the owers to the videographer and the photographer. Every vendor was incredible and did such an amazing job.”

There were many touching and beautiful moments that day, but one is particularly unforgettable for both Jen and Sean, and probably for every person in attendance. After the rest of the wedding party came down the aisle, the doors closed before it was the bride’s turn. Upon opening the doors, everyone saw Jen, gorgeous and in a standing wheelchair.

“Only a handful of people knew I was working towards proceeding down the aisle in a standing wheelchair,” Jen said. “It took a lot of arranging to keep it a surprise from Sean.”

“It caught me completely off-guard,” Sean said. It was evident how stunned Sean was seeing Jen coming down the aisle, and how much he loves her. As one can imagine, it was another room full of people with tears in their eyes, so glad to be a part of the wedding of such a deserving couple. “We nally got to celebrate our marriage with our family and friends in the most beautiful way,” said Sean.

The day at The Dogwood was also a really, really good time. “We still get compliments on how great the day was and how much fun everyone had,” Jen said. “The band, The Red Jackets, were so fun, they actually made people disrobe on the dance oor. One of Sean’s brothers took off his pants and another brother tossed his shirt. They literally rocked the pants off people!”

Jen and Sean’s story serves as a lesson to all couples perhaps more than any other. “It isn’t about all the uffy stuff that comes with planning a wedding. It’s marrying the love of

your life and being surrounded by those closest to you that matters most,” Jen said.

“Perspective is needed now more than ever,” Kelly Spencer said. “And Jen and Sean have such a true love, amazing strength and courage and humor. They know what matters.”

Spencer is so grateful to have found generous vendors who donated their time, efforts and expertise to the day. “I asked the vendors to give 100% percent to this wedding, and they gave 150%,” Spencer said. “It showed the strength and passion of our St. Louis area wedding and hospitality community. We had

some challenging times during the pandemic, but we survived and thrived.”

Spencer hopes to be able to offer an Extraordinary Experience to another couple down the road. She looked back on meeting Jen and Sean and hosting their day as a gift to her as well. “I wanted to create a lifechanging experience for them, and it ended up being a life-altering experience for me,” Spencer. “And it was for all our vendors as well. We were humbled by their love and their grace and grit.”

The Grooms Guide to Fashion

Celebrity-driven fashion trends can dramatically affect what you nd on the rack at your favorite retailer, usually within just a year. If dresses are short at the Oscars, or there’s a prevalence of petal pink, chances are prom dresses will be short within a year or two, and in some variation of pink. The same goes for wedding wear, and it doesn’t just affect what the bride might choose.

Over the last decade or so, celebrity fashions for men have trended tighter and more closely tted, and today’s grooms have followed suit. A slim- tting tuxedo is what most grooms want when they enter the showroom at Stallone’s Formal Wear in Maryland Heights, but color choices have been evolving as well. This year, paisley brocade is an in-demand fabric and it comes in black, gray, green, pale blue, and pink.

“Black is still overwhelmingly the #1 choice for grooms,” said Candace Stallone. “Trends in colors do come into play, and this year that is navy blue, but also gray, including charcoals and medium and light gray. New this year is hunter green, which we haven’t seen in decades.”

Stallone said another trend among her customers that has re-emerged for the rst time in 20 years is the double-breasted tuxedo. A slimmer t, including fabrics with spandex, has been the norm for about a decade, but she expects the trend to start moving back to a slightly looser t in the future. A “slim” t means slimmer through the shoulders and under the arms and generally more shaped to the body and the waist all the way around.

“When I started in 1987, coats were boxy, and we were able to t as many people as possible who wore a size 42,” said Richard Craig, Vice President and General Manager for Savvi Formalwear. “If you were skinny, they were just gonna be baggy. If you were heavier, you’re gonna leave the coat open. Fast forward to about 7 or 8 years ago, and everything has been tapered. Grooms want that tighter ‘second skin’ look. They want it as tight as possible

Gown: “White

without fear of ripping it.”

Manufacturers typically build stretch into all tuxedo coats. Most coats today will have 1 to 3 percent stretch, but Savvi’s “Parkville” coat has 15 percent spandex, which means it has a lot of give.

“Grooms put that coat on and just fall in love with it,” Craig said. “They can ex without ripping, and it’s still a nice traditional black tuxedo. Almost all men’s clothing today is tighter and has stretch and exing. A close- tted tux doesn’t feel stuffy. It’s what men are already wearing in casual clothes. We help them make it a formal look but with a level of comfort.”

Today’s younger groom - typically 18 to 25 – also wants everything shorter, including sleeves, pants, even the coat, which is typically about an inch to an inch and a half shorter than men used to wear them. This modern style allows them to show more “white shirt” at the

sleeve and to express their own fashion sense with colorful, fun socks. These are signi cant changes from traditional etiquette and previous generational preferences for long pants that touched the oor or the top of the shoes.

In terms of color, Craig agrees with Candace Stallone that lighter and brighter is what today’s groom wants. The #1 selling coat for Savvi this year is a light gray that just came out. All of this year’s new styles trend signi cantly lighter, but brighter colors catch the eye of the grooms too. Blues are more electric. Rather than navy, a groom might choose indigo or cobalt. New for this year are cranberry, olive green, and a lighter hunter green. Older grooms tend to stick with black, but even those will have a bit of stretch in them.

FOR SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT

psychedelic-styled tuxedo coat on display in their showroom. It unsurprisingly is called “the Hendrix Coat,” named for the rock ‘n roll guitar great Jimi Hendrix, and it gets enough rentals that they keep it in stock. They also enjoy working with couples planning destination weddings. If there’s a beach involved, the grooms typically choose a lighter color coat.

At Savvi, they have added what they call a “Groom Specialty Coat.” About four years ago, Craig discovered young customers were looking for paisley coats online and were disappointed at the quality and t. Savvi then invested in more paisley brocades for couples who wanted something different. That is the #1 trend difference he has noticed - customers wanting more color and “something different.”

Craig offered a recent story about a couple who came in, and the groom wanted traditional black attire, but the bride noticed

another groom being tted for an ivory coat with a black lapel, and she fell in love with it. The couple was in their early 20s, and the groom was unsure about stepping outside the boundaries of tradition. Craig suggested they consider two coats - one for the wedding and a second “Reception Coat” for the party.

“A lot of these specialty coats come into play because they don’t necessarily want to do the whole ceremony in other colors, and black is traditional and will never go out of style,” said Craig. “Everybody remembers the baby blue tuxes from the 70s, and nobody wants their photos to be dated, so you wear the traditional coat for the ceremony, and pick a different look for the reception.”

Craig also noted that for same-sex couples, one of the women may choose to wear a tux as well. In these cases, they are more likely to choose more conservative attire, with a white or ivory coat to match their partner’s dress. Today’s grooms sometimes ask female friends to serve as groomsmen, and these women are more likely to choose a specialty coat than

their male counterparts.

For more formal events, such as the Fleur de Lis and VP Balls, or charity events, “White Tie” apparel may be required. White Tie is the most formal evening dress code in western countries, and it typically involves a black tailcoat over a white dress shirt with a starched bib, waistcoat, and white bow tie around a standing wing collar. There are variations on this, and both Savvi and Stallone can accommodate this fashion for any St. Louis groom who likes the formal look.

Stallone and Savvi both offer tuxedo rentals that include pants, coat, shirt, tie, and shoes. Some tuxedos also come with vests. Many grooms coordinate the color of their ties with the bride’s accent colors or bridesmaids’ dresses. Craig will occasionally suggest a vest in the same color as the coat to allow the tie to “pop” with color.

TO RENT OR TO BUY

Candace Stallone says if a groom expects to attend three or more formal events per

year, he probably should consider buying a tuxedo rather than renting. However, for most grooms, renting is a better option. She also explained that a bride’s wedding dress will typically need many more alterations than a groom’s tuxedo, which is why the rental business for weddings has historically been limited to tuxedos.

Stallone does brisk business with cummerbunds and bow ties, which seem to never go out of style for them. They pair the paisley brocade and other colorful coats with black pants. Both Stallone and Savvi rent shoes and have both socks and pocket squares available for purchase.

CUSTOM FITTINGS

Darryl Tyler at Tailored Gents at Savile Row started creating custom suits for men as a sideline about a decade ago while he was still pursuing a full-time investment banking career. He eventually opened his own storefront and most recently acquired Savile Row. At his location on Maryland Avenue in

Clayton, he and his staff specialize in handmade suits and tuxedos.

They begin the hand-made construction process by taking about 50 measurements and creating a pattern for each individual client. Then they adjust for height, arm length, and other little things that affect how clothes t. The result is a more comfortable garment that is also more forgiving – without the use of spandex. These suits and tuxedos are made entirely by hand. They also do made-to-measure suits, which involves fewer measurements, existing patterns, and is a machine-made process, and they have off-therack available as well.

“For a bench-made or hand-made suit, the fabric is laid out, and you have several professionals that are cutters, making the pattern, someone who sews the long seams, and someone who nishes the garment,” Tyler said. “It’s similar to building a home. There are lots of different jobs and several professionals are involved. You have to have a team.”

It takes Tyler and his team about four weeks to create the pattern before they do a rst tting. For this basic tting, there are no buttons and no lining. It’s just a shell pattern covered in basting stitches. The suit is then ready for a second tting about four weeks after that, so grooms need to allow a minimum of eight weeks for this process.

The suits and tuxedos at Tailored Gents at Savile Row are purchased, not rented. “It’s

more expensive,” he said. “They’re buying less, but they’re buying better.”

ACCESSORIZING WITH JEWELRY OR WATCHES

Even the jewelry and wristwatch business is in uenced by celebrity trends. At this year’s Academy Awards ceremony, male stars were seen sporting lapel pins, so Timekeepers on Maryland Avenue in Clayton offers a variety of vintage brooch-type pins for fashionable grooms. Recently they had on display a 1920s-era bar pin with sapphires and diamonds and a Georgian-era rose cut diamond “jiggler” pin with enamel silver and gold, circa 1780s to 1820s, that actually jiggles.

While jewelry offerings for men can be more limited than for women, in addition to the lapel pins, this year’s groom can nd vintage and vintage-inspired cuf inks and rings. Timekeepers also offers luxury vintage watches from Rolex, Patek Philippe, Omega, and Cartier.

Trends in the jewelry business come and go. “Some years, white gold is popular and then yellow gold comes back into vogue the next year,” said Ella Ilyashov Pernik, who owns Timekeepers with her husband Eddie Pernik. “There are trends in diamond shapes too. Some years they want pear shaped. Other years it’s oval. Right now, oval is popular. Round is traditional and always popular. St. Louis is a couple of years behind on trends, and the Oscars are often an in uence.”

Rose cut diamond jiggler pin (c.1780 -1820) $12,500 available at Timekeepers

Timekeepers is a family business. They started in 1981 in University City and now have locations in Creve Coeur and Clayton. Ella is a gemologist, and her father was a watchmaker in Belarus before they came to America in 1979. Eddie is a jeweler. Their son is a watchmaker, and their daughter is a gemologist.

THE BRIDE KNOWS

Today’s groom takes a greater interest in his attire than previous generations have done, but the bride almost always gives guidance. When the wedding couple starts describing their ideas, Craig says he and his staff will immediately start dressing up a mannequin to t what they are describing.

“It’s Adult Dress-Up,” Craig said. “The groom always brings the bride - the smart ones do. He may have ideas, but the bride will show pictures. Women are blessed with the ability to visualize - that navy tuxedo is going to look great with that burgundy vest, but that young man, I don’t care what age group they are, they can’t do that. But then we put it on and they can see it.”

Phil Stallone agrees. “We ask the bride how she wants him to look,” he said. ““It’s the gentlemen we t, but it’s the bride that we listen to.”

“The women always know,” said Tyler. “They always have a level they won’t go below. The guys are usually pulling up the rear. What I feel is - everybody looks good in a black tux.”

IMPECCABLE STYLE

The Fashionable Groom

There's nothing like a well-dressed groom. Of course, the de nition of "welldressed" varies from person to person and depends on the formality as well as personal style. When it comes to wedding day fashion, it’s not as simple as one tux ts all. While the classic black-and-white tux will always fall into the dapper category, we love a man willing to take a risk. Whether that means swapping a black suit for something bold, or opting for a velvet jacket, we're all for embracing those fashion moments.

At the end of the day, what he wears down the aisle is his decision. If his vision of his wedding day includes a traditional tted suit, then that's what he should wear. If he's one to push boundaries, or even break the "rules" a bit, let this serve as his guide. With a few unexpected colorways, luxe fabrics, and just maybe an out t change, these styles might even inspire a look he never knew he wanted. We’ve included some of our favorite jaw-dropping gowns to inspire her too!

MAKING IT LEGAL

Though procuring a wedding license isn’t quite as complicated as the wedding itself, it helps to know the rules. Here they are:

1.All applicants in Missouri and Illinois must receive a license before the ceremony; Saint Louis Bride recommends a minimum of 24 hours. Blood tests are not required in either state.

2.A Missouri license is valid for thirty days from its e ective date; an Illinois license for sixty days.

3.Both bride and groom must apply in person. In Missouri, you may apply for a license at any o ce provided the wedding is to take place within the state. In Illinois, you must apply for and receive a license from the county in which the ceremony will take place.
