In an era where traditions can be cherished, adapted, or rewritten, we love seeing couples break free of the “one-size- ts-all” wedding mold. Some of you may dream of a grand ballroom adorned with crystal chandeliers, while others want the intimacy of a backyard celebration under twinkling lights. Your vibe might be an intimate barefoot beach wedding with immediate family followed by a casual celebration when you return home, or maybe it's a city hall elopement, followed by brunch with close friends. Whatever your vision, we believe that your wedding should re ect you—your style, your story, your joy.
Being unique in today’s world means embracing what makes you YOU, both individually and as a couple. It’s about leaning into the details that matter most, like wearing a family heirloom or ditching traditions that don’t feel meaningful. It might mean wearing the unexpected gown or formalwear, or even hosting your celebration in an unconventional venue that speaks to your spirit as a couple. It’s your choice to make your wedding truly personal, an extension of your shared journey, rather than doing things you feel you should but don’t resonate with who you both are.
In this issue, we’re celebrating couples who have done just that, made their wedding their own, unbound by eeting “trends”. By following their hearts rather than the latest list, they’ve shown us that the most memorable weddings are often those that feel timeless and true to the couple themselves. Isn’t that really what it’s all about?
Inside, you’ll nd real stories from these inspiring couples, expert advice on crafting details that are meaningful to you, and, of course, pages lled with images that show the beauty of unique, personal touches. Whether you choose traditional elements, something fresh and daring, or a mix of both, the most important part of your celebration is that it feels like the two of you.
Our goal is to empower you to trust your instincts, honor what feels right, and let go of the idea that there’s only one way to say, “I do.” A wedding isn’t about following a script or the latest style; it’s about writing your own story.
So, let’s dive in together, celebrate your individuality, and bring your vision to life!
Cheers!

For over 100 years, my family has farmed this land. I've followed my passion for owers to create a farm that does things differently. I am blessed to wear a lot of different hats: I am an artist. I am a life-long lover of owers. I am a event designer, wedding planner, writer, dreamer and of course, farmer. I get to combine all my talents and experience to do what I do. I grow owers not because I have to. I grow them because it feeds my soul like nothing else. Spending my days amongst this splendor is a gift that I don't take lightly. I have a responsibility of stewardship of not just this land, but especially the awe-inspiring beauty and magic it nurtures and grows.
Throughout history, beauty and emotions have always been intertwined. Where words fail us, owers carry the message, pitch perfect, effortlessly and without aw. Where words may fail me, the owers here speak for me.
I believe that sharing this beauty is sharing my love. I know they can do the same for you.

I love dogs and dad jokes. If you tee me up, I'm saying “That's what she said." My lms have a classic feel, with a little humor mixed in. I want you to laugh and cry when reliving your day. I've spent twelve years developing my style. No transitions, no weird coloring, just clean heartfelt storytelling. You're only doing this once, and it goes by fast. To me, the value in wedding lm isn't watching it the next day, or even the next week. You haven't even lived yet. The real value is watching later in life, once you've lived a full life of unforgettable experiences. It will hit different. It's the whispered bits of advice during your rst dance. It's hearing the cheers of your rst kiss. It's revisiting those that have passed. Imagine how special it will be to dust off that old digital le and relive these moments 20 years from now. You know that feeling? That same feeling deep down when you realized you found your person. It's the rst ve minutes of UP. It's “Remember Me” from Coco. That's what I'm providing for you. I'm giving you that feeling for life, and it's priceless.
Add some personal touches.

JOY PETALERS
Donating your wedding owers is a beautiful way to extend the joy and love from your special day to others. JOY Petalers is an organization that specializes in ower donations and will repurpose them into arrangements for those in need. Floristas Colleen O’Neill Rohm and Patricia Morningstar found they both shared a mutual love of owers and helping others. Quite accidentally the two met through their research of another like organization. From there, the rest is history and their love for spreading JOY continues to ourish. When we asked Colleen and Patricia about their why, Colleen explained, “Situations of isolation and loneliness are seen throughout our community, sadly they do not discriminate”, adding, “what I think makes JOY Petalers and our mission so powerful is that every bouquet is made with thought and love. The colors, the composition, the vase, all of it done by hand with purpose. To me that is the real beauty of our mission, it’s personal. How can you not smile knowing someone created a bouquet with intension and love, for you.”
Instead of letting your arrangements go to waste, talk with your orist as you are working on your oral design and make sure to loop your venue into the conversation. The earlier the better!
This thoughtful gesture not only reduces waste but also ensures your wedding creates a ripple effect of happiness long after the last dance.
We love a beautiful at lay. It’s a perfect way to tell your story with details like the invitation suite, ring boxes, perfume bottles, and other accessories. Now, it’s time to compliment those traditional photos with a new, unexpected must-take photo from the end of your wedding-day timeline: the late-night snap. The half-eaten cake, scattered crumbs, and even a lipstick-stained wineglass all help to tell the story of your celebration and add depth and personality, transforming your wedding photos into a vivid memory of not just the formalities, but the lived-in moments of your day. It’s a totally unique way to capture a snapshot of your party’s vibe.

THE FLORAL HANDBAG
Instead of traditional handheld arrangements, consider a ower- lled handbag that doubles as a stunning accessory. These chic, bloomadorned clutches or woven handbags can be customized to match your color palette and wedding theme. Using vibrant seasonal owers, they offer a fresh, playful take on the classic bouquet, ensuring you and your bridesmaids stand out in style. Practical and beautiful, a oral handbag is both a fashion statement and a memorable keepsake.

TIMELESS MULTI-TIER WEDDING CAKES
Who doesn’t love to walk into a venue to see a beautiful multi-tiered cake? We do! A large, stylish wedding cake is a delicious masterpiece that ensures your celebration is remembered long after the last slice is gone. Think of it as a centerpiece that beautifully represents your journey as a couple, and in our opinion, the bigger the cake, the more room to express your story as well as to surprise and delight your guests.
We love seeing fun wedding sneakers that are the perfect blend of comfort and personality, especially when they express a couple’s unique style. Whether adorned with glitter, embroidery, or custom designs like the wedding date or “Just Married”, these sneakers offer a playful alternative to traditional formal footwear. They’re ideal for brides who want to dance the night away without aching feet or for grooms who want to add a touch of whimsy to their attire. From classic white kicks to colorful, themed designs that match the wedding palette, wedding sneakers let you prioritize both style and comfort while making a memorable statement.

REAL MOMENTS
Yolonda + Clinton
AUGUST 24, 2024 MEMORIES ARE FOREVER
Our wedding party passed our rings through the audience for everyone to bless before the wedding party gave them to us to exchange with one another. Watching everyone assembled hold onto our rings and wish us well emphasized for us that the moment was bigger than the two of us.
We initially disagreed about having a wedding. Yolonda wanted to go to the courthouse and wear something (not white) that she’d wear again; Clinton wanted a wedding complete with Yolonda in a white wedding gown. We are so glad that we decided to have a ceremony to share with family and friends. Also, Yolonda realized how important the “bridal moment” was to Clinton and is glad that she found a dress that made her feel beautiful and that Clinton also loved.
We found a good number of our vendors at the STL Bride Wedding Connection Wedding Show in January, 2024. We weren’t even engaged yet but were talking about getting married later in the year. We attended the wedding show “just to see". Also, Yolonda was apprehensive about attending a wedding show because, as a first-time bride at 48, she assumed that the show would be geared exclusively to younger brides or brides with more traditional inclinations or that vendors would assume this was a second marriage for both of us. Everyone was so wonderful and kind. I recommend going “just to see” even if you’re merely contemplating marriage, even if you’re not sure whether you want a wedding, and even if you don’t fit the mold of the “typical” nearly wed couple.”

Choose the right vendors for you! There is an overwhelming number of options when it comes to wedding planning, and we were so fortunate to have the team of vendors that we did by our side. I was nervous while my dad and I were waiting for our turn to walk down the aisle. He said,‘Let's take a selfie,’ so we did! It made me laugh and relax, and it was the best idea. One of our favorite parts of the day was right after the ceremony. We snuck out to a private rooftop patio to have a champagne toast and soak in the ‘we did it, we are married!’ moment.”
Think about what matters to you, and don't worry about what everyone else is doing. Florals were important to me, so they were a big part of our décor. Remember that your vendors have a wealth of knowledge and experience, so ask them for help and advice.”

One of the most memorable moments of our wedding was our private dinner. We opted to nix the cocktail hour and go straight into dinner for our guests while we had dinner separately in GoodPress Cafe at 21C Museum Hotel. It was an amazing opportunity to take a breath, enjoy our meal, and have a drink together before rejoining all our guests.”
We did things our way. To maximize our budget and event time we held our ceremony and reception in the same room with the same layout. It forced us to be creative and allowed us to have a wedding that was ours and this came through in every detail. From all black wedding decor and guest attire, opting for a guest portrait studio instead of a traditional photobooth, to lux guest slippers; everything truly represented our style and personality.”

As animal lovers and kids at heart, the Saint Louis Zoo was an easy decision for a wedding venue. The team there made sure our day was one of a kind and everything was more beautiful than we could have imagined. We loved having the opportunity to meet Roby the 23-year-old sea lion and make memories of a lifetime hanging out with him and the trainers at the zoo. Guests were able to enjoy cocktails and appetizers while petting stingrays. Riding the train around the zoo as newlyweds with the wedding party and guests was also a very memorable moment of our day. We can’t forget to mention how much we loved our amazing wedding party’s iconic entrance doing choreographed dances to September and Bring em’ Out, choreographed by the bridesmaids and groomsmen themselves, to surprise everyone!”

Every moment was perfect! Having both of my parents walk me down the aisle was so special and meaningful. At the end of the night, all we wanted was to enjoy one big party with the people we loved. Standing on stage with the band and seeing a packed dance floor with people singing and dancing all night made us so happy. Will's parents surprised us with a confetti cannon, and it felt like something out of a movie. Crowd surfing off the stage was also so fun! Parading down Market Street with our guests and our band in a second line was the coolest way to end the night. Although second lines are not traditional for a St. Louis wedding, we thought it would be a fun addition, and we were right!”

My bridesmaids surprised me the morning of my wedding with a box filled with handwritten letters from all the most important women in my life.”
The most special part our of wedding happened during our ceremony. We both designated a special family member to be our “voices” and read aloud a surprise love poem that we had each hand picked for each other ahead of time. I chose the poem “Maybe” by unknown for my Uncle Chris to read aloud to Jacob, and Jacob’s Aunt Cindy read the poem “Sunflower” by Charlotte Freeman aloud to me. It was such a fun way to incorporate family during a ceremony as well as a very meaningful surprise for each of us that we both looked forward to while planning the wedding.”

DEVIN LARSON, BACK COUNTRY BOHEMIANS
When planning our wedding, we wanted our guests to feel like they were celebrating in places meaningful to us and our relationship. In high school, we were the youngest regulars at our favorite Italian restaurant, and we wanted our guests to feel like they were getting a glimpse into the many sweet date nights we had in St. Louis.”
Don’t shy away from implementing your favorite things. Whether it's a certain dessert, song, game, color, flower, or location, your wedding is meant to celebrate the two of you and it’s so special to see all your favorite people in the whole world enjoy your favorites too.”

MICHELLE SCHWARTZ OF WHITE-KLUMP PHOTOGRAPHY
As the Rabbi was asking all guests to silence their phones to begin the processional, everyone's phone emergency alarms suddenly went off in unison. Before anyone could say anything, the hotel intercom announced that all guests in the hotel needed to evacuate to the nearest stairwell as there was a tornado warning in effect. Over 200 guests, planners, vendors, and hotel employees, were piled almost on top of each other, staying as far away as they could from any doors or windows nearby. Hotel employees told guests they’ve never seen this happen in the 25 years they’ve worked at the Marriott. Sabrina, our wedding planner, had never experienced anything like this either in all her years in the business. This is something that could have ruined the wedding
for us, but I stayed calm during the storm (pun intended) and helped my soon-to-be husband, Nathan, do the same, “if anyone knows how to handle situations like this, it’s us!” I said with an optimistic smile. It’s known to be good luck to have it rain on your wedding day and we took it that a tornado was even better! About 30 minutes later, the intercom went off with “All Clear”. The procession began again and when I finally reached Nathan at the end of the aisle, the intercom made its last interruption;” The tornado warning is over, thank you for choosing Marriott.” The entire room burst out in laughter. “Thank you for choosing Marriott” became a saying that would be used for the rest of the weekend. This was a night that will be remembered forever.”

THE YOUNGS PHOTO + FILM
Our first look was so memorable, it helped take the nerves away and it was a special moment that we got to share, just the 2 of us. Another was when Ross came with me to change into my reception dress. It allowed us to have a few minutes by ourselves and really take the moment in. It's hard to get caught up with the timeline of the day, so it was nice to just focus on each other without any distractions.”
Don't get caught up in the small details that don't really matter and that people won't notice. You are not there to impress everyone. This is your day and simplicity can speak volumes. Also, we highly recommend getting a wedding planner. I don't know what we would have done without ours. There are so many things to take into consideration when planning a wedding and you just don't think of half of them when you're caught up in all the chaos.”

Making our entrance together into the reception. Nothing beats the energy you feel when you step into the room and all your friends and family are cheering you on. So much happiness. Our dance floor was packed the entire night. We had light up tambourines and headbands for our guests to party with. Both made for many hilarious moments and memories.
Listen to your vendors. Hire the people they suggest. When all your vendors know each other and have worked together, the real magic happens. Your day will run smoothly, and you will be able to be present and in the moment at your wedding knowing that everything is taken care of. Great day of logistics makes a wedding. Have someone you know and love be your officiant. Your ceremony will be extra special and sentimental having a loved one marry you. The day goes by quickly, savor every moment and don't leave each other's side.”

The first look on the gorgeous bridge at the park will stay in our memories forever. The ceremony itself was perfect and there was even a duck that made a special appearance taking off in flight over the bridge where all our guests were standing. The mother of the bride gave an incredible speech that had everyone laughing and crying. We loved our grand entrance, walking in to all our loved ones with ‘Simply The Best’ by Tina Turner blasting.
Most importantly, being able to stay grounded in what it is all about, a lifetime together with your partner!”

Hire a wedding planner from the very beginning. Maureen from Maureen Renée Events was phenomenal and irreplaceable! Residing in Denver, my mother worked closely to nail down the details to make the wedding vibe uniquely our own.”

Personalize your celebration!
Infuse your personalities and unique love story into every aspect, from the venue and décor to the music and food. Be present and mindful. Take a deep breath, soak in the joy, and cherish every moment. Chad and I both share a love of books, history, and St. Louis. These interests formed the starting point for determining the themes of the wedding and were the reasons behind many of the decisions we made when planning our special day. The menus provided to the guests were in the format of a book, complete with a bookmark, to reflect the literary theme of the wedding. The late night snack was a charming French book fair. We had a side room of the Coronado set up to replicate Les Bouquinistes, street booksellers of Paris, where I had studied in college. We had a lovely selection of books displayed as part of the book fair, and everyone was invited to take a book or two home as a favor in a personalized tote bag. During the late night snack, we also served traditional French food such as croque monsieur, frites, french pastries and a crème brûlée bar.”

Our adorable flower girl was VERY deliberate and precise when scattering flower petals. I loved peeking and hearing guests react to her. The way Joe delivered his original vows, entirely from memory, genuinely, and confidently made me feel grounded and connected to him in that moment, regardless of all the other moving parts of the day.”
In planning, don’t hesitate to ask vendors to explain things, and it’s OK to politely say ‘no thank you’ when something doesn’t feel right for you. These are professionals at work, and they won’t take it personally!”
We’re glad we didn’t ask our wedding party to buy or wear specific outfits. We had a mixedgender wedding party on both sides, and we just asked them to wear what they knew would work for them within our suggested attire. This allowed people to either use what they already owned, or if they wanted to, they could buy something that they will continue to get lots of future use out of. We think our wedding party looked so great because everyone got to wear something they felt good about wearing! That contributed to a fun, positive mood and a wonderful wedding day.”
My father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer nine months before our wedding. From that day, he made it his goal to walk me down the aisle. Simply having him with us for our wedding was such a blessing – the most special and emotional gift Jonathan and I could have asked for.
Although physically weak and confined to a wheelchair, my father somehow summoned the energy to give a most inspiring speech. It was my dad at his best. He was loving, thoughtful, sincere, and funny. The most touching moment came when the entire family surrounded him and joined us for the father-daughter dance. Sadly, my father passed away just four days later. But knowing that he reached his goal and battled so hard to see us exchange vows created the happiest and most memorable moment on our perfect day.”

The Delmar Loop Breaks the Mold

Every major city has that one quirky neighborhood that thrives on authenticity and embraces the unconventional. The Delmar Loop is that neighborhood in St. Louis.
You don’t have to spend much time on the six-block section of the Delmar Loop (or the Loop as the locals call it) to see why the

American Planning Association named it “one of the 10 greatest streets in America.”
With its vintage clothing shops, muralcovered brick walls, eclectic restaurants, and iconic establishments, such as Blueberry Hill, the Loop has been the scene of many rst dates, proposals — and weddings, too.
At rst glance, you might think the Loop is simply a hangout for Wash U students or a retreat for the urban hipster. But look closer, and you’ll discover a vibrant, diverse atmosphere that is ideal for all wedding celebrations.
“I want people to perceive the Delmar Loop a little differently and see it like we could have a wedding here. I want to break the mold,” says Samantha Smugala, executive director of the East Loop Community Improvement District.
MAGIC MINI GOLF
The Loop’s eclectic vibe certainly does that, attracting couples who don’t necessarily want a traditional wedding. Instead, they might prefer a rock-and-roll ceremony at the Pageant or a cinema-themed celebration at the Tivoli. These couples might prefer to say their vows at City Hall, then celebrate their new life together with close family and friends at the Pin-Up Bowl, the place where they had their rst date.
stage. With its two full-size shuf eboards, a colorful ve-car indoor Ferris wheel, pinball and arcade games, delicious food, and full bar, Magic Mini Golf is the perfect fun, smallwedding alternative. Did we mention the free T-shirt you get when you say “I do?”
If you’re a couple who loves the idea of getting hitched in a little chapel in Vegas but want to stay close to home, you can have an unconventional wedding ceremony at Magic Mini Golf. The family-friendly indoor minigolf venue is home to the coolest wedding chapel in St. Louis. Every staff member is ordained and can perform a legal marriage ceremony on the spot on the Magic Chapel
Some couples like the idea of a traditional, picture-perfect white wedding that pulls out every stop. And if that’s you, the Loop and its adjacent areas can certainly accommodate. The Boo Cat Club’s exquisite theater event space, where Tennessee Williams once performed, sets the stage for more traditional ceremonies. Its ballroom with hardwood oors, mezzanine balcony, and baby grand piano indulges couples who desire a sophisticated, yet understated, urban event space.
Another stunning event space is the Third Degree Glass Factory. Located in the Delmar Maker District, the venue can accommodate wedding ceremonies for up to 280, depending on the chosen event space. To make your
THIRD DEGREE GLASS FACTORY
wedding truly memorable, the venue encourages you to “add a little heat.” The Third Degree Glass Factory is more than an event space — it’s a working glass factory that offers guest seating in the hot shop or an optional glassblowing demo from the adjacent glass gallery.
The venue also offers a one-of-a-kind unity ceremony featuring a custom glass piece created on-site. Couples hosting their reception at Third Degree can add a glassblowing demo during cocktail hour, allowing guests to watch the custom piece being crafted live in the hot shop.
One of the most intriguing aspects of having a wedding at one of the Loop’s unique venues is there’s an option for every budget. With the Loop’s varied venues, it’s possible to have the wedding of your dreams without compromising your budget or preferences.
CELEBRATE UNDER THE LOOP'S NEON LIGHTS
The wedding may be the main event, but let’s not leave out the festivities leading up to the big day. From engagement parties and bridal showers to bachelor and bachelorette weekends and rehearsal dinners, the list of ever-growing pre-wedding celebrations challenges couples to get creative to make each gathering memorable.
While destinations like Vegas and Nashville have become trendy hotspots for pre-wedding celebrations, creating unforgettable memories doesn’t necessarily require a plane ticket. In fact, you don’t have to travel far from home to make these moments truly remarkable.
Consider a one-of-a-kind karaoke experience at the W Karaoke Lounge for a combined bachelor/bachelorette party. Start with happy hour drinks in the bar’s lively
common space before taking the party to one of their stylish private rooms, complete with contemporary design and a luxurious vibe. Guests can belt out favorite tunes, with playlists pre-submitted or loaded up by the staff before your arrival. Rooms accommodate eight to 25 people and include a private server for a full VIP experience.
If karaoke isn’t your style, plan a movie night at the Tivoli, one of St. Louis’s classic theaters. Since opening in 1924, this venue has brought people together, much like weddings do. The Tivoli, owned and operated by One Family Church, only screens lms on Friday nights, but it’s available to rent for special events. Couples with a love of cinema — or fond memories of the theater’s heyday from the mid-90s to the 2010s — may even nd it to be a memorable wedding venue.
Are you searching for a dreamy, over-the-

moon space for your rehearsal dinner? The Moonrise Hotel’s Rooftop Terrace Bar, with its twinkling lights and sweeping city views, will leave you swooning. If the weather’s too cold, bring the party inside to the Rooftop Twilight Room, an all-season sleek, modern space with spectacular views and atmospheric full-service or banquet-style dining for up to 80 people.
The boutique hotel is also the perfect spot to ensure your guests have a comfortable place to rest between events. In addition to its well-appointed single rooms, it also offers luxury celebrity suites that pay homage to St. Louis icons like Shelley Winters and Josephine Baker. Be sure to take advantage of the hotel’s group rates for the best deals. The hotel also hosts intimate sit-down wedding receptions in its Apollo 8, Apollo 11, and Gemini rooms, making wedding planning seamless and a one-stop event.
Pre-wedding celebration activities aren’t the only things couples need to plan. They also have to think about their guests' entertainment on the big day. With the Loop’s proximity to Forest Park and several popular traditional ceremony venues, like the Jewel Box, Saint Louis University’s St. Francis Xavier College Church, or the Cathedral Basilica, it’s the perfect location for wedding guests needing entertainment in between the ceremony and the reception.
Transportation isn’t a worry. Wedding guests can hop aboard the nostalgic Loop Trolley that runs between Forest Park and Delmar Boulevard and ll the awkward in-between time with a root beer oat at Fitz’s, stroll along St. Louis’s Walk of Fame, or throw axes at the Hatchet Haus. For guests with children, the MADE for Kids 7,000-square-foot makerspace in the Maker District offers ample opportunities for kids
ages 4-14 to get creative and get out their wiggles in between the day’s wedding events.
MEMORY MAKERS IN YOUR BACKYARD
There’s no secret formula to the perfect wedding because every couple is different, but if there was one, we’d say it’s this: St. Louis has beautiful neighborhoods with a superabundance of charm and personality. When planning your wedding, choose a space that has the potential to be a memory maker. A memory maker, as Smugala explains it, is a “place you can always go back to, and they will always be there, and you can make new memories.”
While the Delmar Loop neighborhood has changed a lot over the last century, it’s the “exciting new growth and development that has made it a destination” and a true memory maker that makes it a spectacular, one-of-akind location for your wedding!

Going beyond the standard modifications to create a wedding dress just for you
By Jennifer C. Frakes
We’ve all seen shows like “Say Yes to the Dress” in which a bride-to-be tries on three or four dresses at a bridal boutique.
Within the 30-minute episode, she’s found “the one” and she and her crew are teary-eyed as they imagine her walking down the aisle in that exact gown (with maybe just a few alterations for fit).
But of course, that is not every bride’s experience. It often takes more time and more dresses to find the right one for you. Even then, a bride might want to go beyond the usual alterations and really customize a dress that truly feels like her.
Customizing a dress and even working with a designer to create a one-of-a-kind gown is possible, and may be easier than you think. St. Louis-area brides are lucky to have an array of wonderful bridal salons that work with designers who will alter their dresses to your desires. St. Louis is also home to a globallyacclaimed designer who can work with you to create your gown from scratch.

Say Yes to the Process
ALTERED STATES: VIA SALON OR SEAMSTRESS
When Heather Allen began looking for a wedding dress, she thought it would be a brief process. “But it was more challenging than I thought,” said Allen. “I went to six or seven boutiques and some dresses came close to being the one. I thought I wanted traditional and elegant, but nothing seemed completely right when trying them on.” She also didn’t have a lot of time to decide, as she began looking in January 2024 and was married in July that year.
Allen was proposed to in Paris and she and her fiancé Jason celebrated their engagement in Spain. The couple loves to travel and Allen realized she wanted an international feel to her dress. “It turns out I was really looking for a dress that was part bridal gown, part cocktail dress,” Allen said.
Allen was able to get the dress she wanted by working with Asmaa Hashimi, owner of Dollz Bridal & Prom in Chesterfield, Missouri. “After talking with her, Asmaa knew what I wanted,” Allen said. “As we talked, she drew up some ideas based on what I was telling her.”
An overseas designer Hashimi works with was able to customize one of their dresses, incorporating pearls and feathers. They both contributed to the European feel and cocktail aspect of the dress. A pearl and feather hair accessory was added for the perfect touch. Allen then took the dress to her tailor (Noor Chaudhry of Expert Alterations and Tuxedo) to take in and shorten it a bit.
The dress was out-of-the-box for Allen, but she loved everything about it. “I’m pretty modest and didn’t think I’d go for a sheer bodice, but it was very tasteful and made sense
with the rest of the dress,” Allen said. “On our wedding day, I sat comfortably and walked with ease. Someday I may shorten it and make it a true cocktail dress.”
Heather Craft, owner of Bridal Parlour in Shiloh, Illinois estimates that about half of the designers she works with are open to significant changes to their designs. “Some designers will let you change the fabric or add sleeves,” Craft said. “Others will make more major changes. Antonio Gual in New York, for example, was able to make side cutouts to one of his dresses for a bride. For another bride Craft worked with, designer Alyssa Kristen in Chicago added a slit, lowered the back, and added sleeves and buttons to one of her designs.”
In the bridal industry for 15 years, Craft aims to provide an intimate, cozy experience for the bride and a small group of family and friends (up to five people). “We only sell bridal gowns and are completely bride-focused. We offer dresses that are classic with a modern twist,” Craft said.
Bridal Parlour is an exclusive carrier of Made with Love dresses, a brand from Australia. Craft says Made with Love can change the neckline, fabrics and bodices of their dresses. “They actually offer a spreadsheet with different possibilities of combinations-a bride can mix and match the tops and bottoms to create their own unique dress,” Allen said.
Split sizing is another option from some brands. Craft ordered different sizes for the bottom and top of her own bridal gown and it fit almost perfectly when it arrived. Craft’s gowns usually arrive in about six months, and she advises allowing two to three months for alterations.
Most bridal salons have a list of skilled seamstresses to refer brides to for alterations, and sometimes it makes more sense to use a seamstress for changes to a dress. “Sleeves are easier to add in alterations, as most designers won’t add them anyway because of arm size variation,” Craft said. “ I can order the extra material for the bride to bring to the seamstress. But in general, it’s always easier to take away from rather than add to the dress.”
“At Bridal Parlour, we strive to find the easiest and least expensive way for brides to get exactly what they want,” Craft said. “Whether it’s working with a designer, if that’s an option,
Say Yes to the Process
or an expert in alterations.”
Making major changes to a dress sounds great, but how much does it cost? “It often depends on the price point,” said Amy DeLeo, owner of Mimi’s Bridal at Town and Country and bridal salons in Sullivan, Missouri and Kansas City. “We offer dresses from $1,695 to $15,000. At $2,500 you can make some moderate changes. You can change the shape of the neckline or color of the lining, for example. About $3,800 and up offers more possibilities for customizations.”
DeLeo recommends allowing eight to 12 months from ordering your dress to and completing alterations. “Allowing this much time will keep it a lovely, relaxing experience, as well as avoiding rush fees,” DeLeo said. And the experienced stylists at Mimi’s are honest with brides about what can and cannot be changed. Customizations with a couture gown can
be limitless, though there are some designers of couture that won’t make changes to their dresses, DeLeo said. Those would need to be altered by a seamstress. Mimi’s list of recommended seamstresses includes experts for all budgets. “Price points vary among seamstresses as well as their availability and timelines.”
Mimi’s Bridal at Town & Country offers a large selection of couture wedding gowns, carefully selected and exclusive to Mimi’s across Missouri. What makes a gown couture? “Couture gowns are handmade with impeccable craftsmanship,” DeLeo said. “They come from high-end designers that use the finest materials and elements. The gowns have more boning, fine silks, French lace, Swarovski crystals and luxurious beading. They can be made to measure, from a very petite bride to a plus-size bride.”
DeLeo recommends planning on 12 to 15 months for a couture gown. “It takes more money and more time, but they are gorgeous and very special,” she said.
Whatever your budget, DeLeo and her team aim to provide every bride with a memorable experience where you find a dress you absolutely love. “There is no settling for a dress at Mimi’s,” DeLeo said. “We want you to find something that reflects your personality. We will jump through any hoop for the bride to be completely satisfied.”
ORIGINAL STATE: BESPOKE GOWNS, DIRECTLY WITH THE DESIGNER
Taylor is a St. Louis native living in New York City. She was pretty sure she’d have no problem finding a wedding dress in the Big Apple. She’s a laidback bride and the dress wasn’t something she thought that much about.
“I went into looking for a dress pretty blind,” Taylor said. “At the first store, I asked how many dresses we could see in the amount of time we had. I tried on 12 vastly different dresses, and was at least able to see what I liked and didn’t like.”
She and her Mom visited about five different bridal boutiques in New York. “I saw things I liked, but nothing that seemed me,” Taylor said. Taylor is also quite petite and some dresses seemed to swallow her.
Back in St. Louis, Taylor’s mom had discovered Audra Herndon, founder of womenswear brand AUDRA. Trained in Paris with accolades from Vogue, Forbes, InStyle and WWD, to name a few, the AUDRA retail shop in St. Louis features her ready-to-wear designs. She also offers a Bespoke Bridal Experience in which a bride embarks on a personalized experience tailored to her vision and values.
“Our bespoke process allows brides—and also mothers of the bride and groom—to be intricately involved in creating a look that captures their unique style and the special significance of their role on the wedding day,” Herndon said. “From the initial meeting through each fitting, we prioritize making the process enjoyable and meaningful. Additionally, we work closely with the bride and wedding planner to ensure a cohesive look for the entire day - from the gown and veil to reception attire and bridal party.”
“My Mom loved Audra’s vibe and ordered a custom dress for herself for the rehearsal dinner,” Taylor said. “She really enjoyed working with Audra in designing her dress. She also loved that AUDRA was St. Louis-based and a woman-owned business. She’s a big advocate of that.”
The Bespoke Bridal Experience with AUDRA begins with a warm, in-depth conversation to get to know each other, either in person at the Ladue retail showroom or via video conference. “I want to understand their values, what matters most to them and how they envision the day,” Herndon said. “I ask questions, such as, ‘What’s the most important moment of the day for you?’ or ‘How do you want to feel as you step onto the dance floor for your first dance?’” Herndon also asks style questions like “What is a dress you wore that you felt your best?” or “Are there areas of your body you desire to highlight?” These questions help bring clarity to their vision and allow Herndon to design a piece that reflects who they are and what they value.
After the initial consultation, Taylor sent Herndon a spreadsheet of her bridal gown likes and dislikes. They discussed the details of the wedding day (in late May of 2025) and that it will be an outdoor ceremony. Audra then sent four different silhouettes and Taylor has narrowed it to two. Once that decision is made,
Say Yes to the Process
then they will decide on the fabric, as some fabrics make more sense for certain designs. Though trying on so many dresses before finding AUDRA wasn’t Taylor’s initial plan, Herndon says it’s worthwhile to do just that. “For brides considering a custom-made gown, I always encourage them to go to a bridal store and try on various silhouettes to explore what feels most natural on them,” Herndon said. “This process helps us both understand what they’re drawn to and ensures that the design aligns with what makes them feel their best. It’s important for brides to allow themselves time for this exploration. I also emphasize to brides to start early, allowing the time in this joyful season to savor the dress experience and not feel rushed.”
Taylor is shocked by how much fun she’s having creating her own AUDRA wedding gown. “At first, I wondered: If I can’t decide on
one wedding dress, how will I be able to make decisions on every button and seam? But Audra asks great questions and talks you through the process and is really open to listening. She’s very down-to-earth and has made it a great experience,” Taylor said.
Discussing options with a top experienced designer opened Taylor up to some options she hadn’t considered. “I am 35, and didn’t think I’d choose a strapless gown. I thought strapless was a young lady’s game. But weddings dresses, especially custom ones, are so well-constructed.”
Other brides (and mothers-of-the-bride) agree a bespoke gown from AUDRA is a special and satisfying process. “Many AUDRA brides find value in the personalized fit, and having the opportunity to combine key details they loved when trying on dresses with fabrics that feel effortless and modern,” said Herndon. “I’m currently working with another bride who has a beautiful vision inspired by her whimsical, feminine personality and her family heritage. She wanted a gown that honored her family, but also felt modern and distinctly her own. Together, we explored floral appliqués and silhouettes that balanced tradition with her individual style, ultimately creating a gown that felt deeply personal and memorable.”
In terms of timing, Herndon recommends allowing six to 12 months for a bespoke bridal gown and a minimum of four months for a mother-of-the-bride or mother-of-the-groom gown. Each dress is crafted with incredible attention to detail, from custom Italian made fabrics to the hand applique detailing. Like AUDRA ready-to-wear, each design is cut and sewn in their New York City partner factories. Bespoke brides go through multiple fittings, allowing them to achieve the perfect fit and ease of wear.
Taylor was pleasantly surprised that the cost of a bespoke AUDRA gown wasn’t as much she thought it might be, especially since there would be no costs for alterations. Pricing for bespoke bridal gowns at AUDRA start at $8,000, and evening gowns begin at $6,500. AUDRA also offers made-to-measure and demi-bespoke options for clients looking to customize an existing AUDRA style, allowing for a more flexible budget while still achieving a high level of personalization.
WORDS FROM THE WISE
Whatever a bride’s experience in finding the right dress, local industry experts have some advice. Amy DeLeo of Mimi’s Bridal at Town and Country suggests that when coming for your appointment at a bridal salon, “Bring the people closest and most important to you-the people you cherish. And keep the search for your gown about you and what you really want.”
Heather Craft of Bridal Parlour agrees, and suggests that a bride trust the dress she has chosen for herself and her wedding day, and not look too far beyond that. “Many brides think they want a timeless look,” Craft said. “But it’s almost impossible to find something that will also be perfect in 40 years. I still love my dress, though it’s not on trend now. I loved it for every minute of my wedding day. Who cares if it’s not in vogue decades from now? You fell in love with your dress for a reason.”
Newlywed Heather Allen also thinks it’s important to choose a dress that represents you, and perhaps your story as a couple. “Also think about your wedding day venue or setting,” Allen said. “Our wedding was the first wedding at the 21C Hotel downtown and my dress really fit the vibe of the hotel. It was one of the happiest days of my life!”
Bride-to-be Taylor’s dress journey was a little longer than she anticipated, but she’s fine with that. “I never had that ‘yes to the dress’ moment,” Taylor said. “I’d say don’t expect a thunderbolt right away. But I’m so excited about the dress Audra is designing and really enjoying the process.”

CATERING ST. LOUIS EVENTS
As a newly married couple, you might think you’re the star of the show at your wedding reception.
But the truth is, the food is the real superstar. Sure, friends and family want to celebrate your big day with you, but they’re also excited for delicious dishes to keep them fueled and ready to dance the night away.
While traditionally minded couples may still prefer a sit-down dinner, many modern couples want a more personalized dining experience—and incorporating food stations into your reception is one of the best ways to do this. If you think food stations, or “food bars” as they’re often called, only suit cocktail hour, wedding caterers want you to think outside the box.
“Food stations are fun and interactive and a way to make the event more entertaining for your guests,” says Sharon Endicott, president of Catering St. Louis Events, a food management provider creating magic for weddings and life’s celebrations for nearly 40 years.
Food stations allow couples the opportunity to lean into their culinary preferences, provide a

unique dining experience, and make it easier for guests to mix and mingle.

Food stations keep guests satis ed and, on their feet, but let’s make one thing clear: they’re not trendier buffets. From the setup to the food, food stations offer your guests much more versatility than a buffet.
When describing a food station event, Kelly Spencer, founder and design lead at The Social Affair at The Dogwood, the rst catering service in the St. Louis Metro area to offer food stations, encourages couples to think of a food station event as an extended cocktail party-style reception.
“Stations offer the most options for your guests,” Spencer explains. “It’s a deconstructed dinner that they get to customize along with the help of our culinary team members. They can try something new, which is always fun, and have a little of this or a lot of that!”
The regimented nature of a wedding reception buffet keeps people waiting too long to eat. Nothing is more unenjoyable than sitting at a table with strangers, or people you loosely know, waiting for your table to be released to stand in line, especially when the guest list hits triple digits. With food stations, guests get fed quicker and stay on their feet longer. When food stations are strategically placed throughout the reception space, guests feel free to move around and interact more, which adds to the lively, celebratory atmosphere.
Rachel Soete, managing director of Culinary Canvas, likens food stations to conversation starters and food trucks. “It [the food] becomes more of a conversation piece with guests and gets them talking more, It’s like having several food trucks at your event, different foods for everyone, and it's a totally different pace compared to a buffet or plated dinner.”
With food stations, dining becomes an experience, with the cuisine taking center stage and allowing for any combination of avors imaginable. Sam Orlando Jr., owner of Orlando Catering and Event Design, enjoys working with couples to explore their personalities and styles, nding creative ways to make their favorite foods a one-of-a-kind experience for their guests. “We try not to bring our preconceived menu ideas but rather use our
CATERING ST. LOUIS EVENTS
THE SOCIAL AFFAIR AT THE DOGWOOD
experience to create something that allows the couple to put their signature on their event,” Orlando emphasizes. “It’s especially fun to work with foodie clients who allow us to have fun with a menu and its presentation.”
Food stations, unlike buffets, satisfy a variety of tastes and dietary preferences, allowing for more diverse menus. For example, Butler’s Pantry, which has provided formal and casual catering since 1966, offers traditional stations, such as risotto cakes, carving, sushi, and charcuterie, but also more contemporary offerings like a crudo station and dessert art station. Bridget Bitza, Butler’s Pantry’s chief
revenue of cer, encourages couples to customize their food station offerings. “We want the couple to feel comfortable with not only the avors, but also the colors, textures, and presentations.”
Creating the ultimate food station starts with an initial conversation and getting to know the couple. The Social Affair at The Dogwood team designs food station menus around that conversation—and the questions they ask create the station’s foundation. When meeting with couples, the team discusses their food likes and dislikes, where their travels have taken them, what foods they enjoyed, their family history, etc. These “foodie” brainstorming sessions
usually take an hour but help the team develop a fully customized dining experience.
Some couples prefer to design their food stations around the season. For example, The Culinary Canvas worked with a couple who wanted a fall-inspired small plate food station setup that included a beet salad with goat cheese, walnuts, and honey balsamic dressing, butternut squash ravioli with sage cream sauce, pomegranate salmon with brown butter green beans, braised beef and sweet potato succotash, and crostini with white beans and sundried olive compote.
Others want more approachable food
ORLANDO CATERING AND EVENT DESIGN
options like the Biergarten station The Social Affair at The Dogwood team created for a couple. It included housemade German-style sausages cut to order, soft pretzels, schnitzel bites, and German potato salad. The station even served Weihenstephan, the world’s oldest beer, in mini steins.
For couples with different cultural backgrounds, food stations allow them to offer
cuisine that re ects their individual heritages. At Catering St. Louis Events, one of their most memorable wedding receptions included an interactive Indian food station to meet the groom’s dietary preferences and a St. Louisthemed food station with toasted ravioli, local pretzels, and Imo’s Pizza for his St. Louis bride.
Sam Orlando shared one of his company’s most unique food stations, which included
childhood favorites with an adult twist. The couple worked in childcare and wanted to make their passion for childhood a part of their reception by serving food items such as Buffalo chicken lollipops, PBJ pastry cones, housemade Italian sausage pigs in a blanket with Dijon and tomato marmalade dipping sauces, lunchbox veggies in customized boxes with the couple’s monogram, fondue pretzels, mini Boursin

cheeseburgers, a mac and cheese martini bar, s'mores tartlets served on a mini Ferris wheel, and cheesecake push pops.
ARE FOOD STATIONS THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR YOUR RECEPTION?
Yes, food stations get people out of their seats and on their feet. Yes, food stations let you get creative with offerings. But is a food station the
best option for your reception?
Price is a concern for most couples—and rightly so. You might think food stations cost less, but that’s not always the case. While you don’t need as much staff for food stations as you do a seated dinner, the food costs can be much higher.
For starters, consider this: a plated dinner is one dinner option. When you have a food
station, you’re now providing your guests with three to four dinner options. “Additionally, you need more china, which increases rental costs, The Social Affair at The Dogwood’s Spencer explains.”
If you have your heart and mind set on offering food stations but your budget is tight, consider selecting items that don’t require staff. For example, you might skip the carving station and opt for a charcuterie station. You could also offer two to three budget-friendly food offerings and one higher price-point option. Trimming your guest list can lower the costs, too. The fewer guests you have, the fewer food stations you need.
Another factor to consider when deciding between a food station or the traditional buffet or seated dinner is space. “Food stations have to be strategically served,” explains Catering St. Louis Events’ Endicott. You must be comfortable with the stations being open upon the guests’ arrival. Waiting until after the speeches and toasts are made results in everyone getting up at the same time and rushing the stations, essentially creating a long buffet line, which defeats the purpose of food stations.
You must also consider the space. Unlike traditional buffets, food stations require a larger footprint. If you have a small venue, adding food stations throughout could make the space feel cramped and leave little room for your guests to move about comfortably.
Lastly, ensure you have enough time for the caterers to set up the food stations. Unlike a buffet, the individual stations get styled and designed to the couple’s vision, whether it’s contemporary, minimalistic, vintage, or overthe-top. It takes time to create a beautiful station setup that’s cohesive and matches the decor. Ideally, you want to give the caterers at least two hours to set up the stations.
THE ST. LOUIS FOOD STATION LEADERS
Street tacos, pasta bars, shaken-not-stirred salad stations, gourmet mac and cheese (think lobster!), carving stations, Middle Eastern stations, and St. Louis-themed bites are all taking wedding receptions by storm. If you have the space, the time, and the budget to include food stations at your reception, your guests are guaranteed a delightful culinary experience.

One Planner, ree Weddings
An Unforgettable October At e Saint Louis Art Museum
By Amy Zimmerman
It was purely coincidence. Three couples with weddings on consecutive Saturdays in October all at the Saint Louis Art Museum and all planned by the same person. For Lauren Zigman Eastman, founder and creative director of LZ Event Co, it was an opportunity to use one of the most beautiful event spaces in St. Louis in three uniquely personal ways.
“For me, as a planner, it was so exciting because not only did I get to work with the Saint Louis Art Museum, which is such a unique place, but also with three different couples taking their personalities and visions and bringing them to life,” said Eastman.
Sarah Heckemeyer, Director of Catering and Events for the Saint Louis Art Museum, appreciated how each couple transformed the
museum to t their perspective.
“Each couple’s take is unique and interesting. It’s neat to see their personalities come out and how they bring their vision of the art museum to life,” said Heckemeyer.
For Joe Gardner, Executive Chef for the Saint Louis Art Museum, the weddings offered three opportunities to create menus that were both delicious and beautiful. Heckemeyer said Gardner and his team strive to elevate the menu to match the unique location where it is served.
“Our rst focus is avor but second to that is the presentation. It is challenging but rewarding and we have a great team at the museum,” said Gardner.

This was an intimate, classic wedding with vintage touches throughout.
The couple wanted to emphasize the lush greenery outside the museum by featuring emerald green with white and gold touches. Mahogany chiavari chairs, distinguished by their signature bamboo-like joints, added elegance and sophistication to the event. Ornate gold chargers highlighted the vintage look and matched the pattern of the bride’s dress.
The ceremony was held on site in the Grigg Gallery, one of the museum’s largest galleries that contains artwork from German painter Max Beckman. The couple honored the bride’s heritage by incorporating cultural traditions. Both the bride and groom wore greenery crowns during the ceremony. The couple also served korovai, a traditional braided bread that is a centerpiece at weddings in countries such as Bulgaria, Ukraine, and Russia. The braids celebrate the intertwining of the couple’s families and the bread is decorated with symbolic gures such as birds and owers. Korovai is displayed near the altar during the wedding and served to guests at the reception.
Following the ceremony, cocktails and dinner were served in the Sculpture Hall, the grand entrance to the museum’s Beaux Arts building that features Roman arches and vaults. Dancing was held back in the Grigg Gallery.

The wedding on October 14 was a luxurious and stunning affair unlike any wedding held at the Saint Louis Art Museum.
Following the ceremony at the Cathedral Basilica, guests arrived to a cocktail hour held in a custom-built tent surrounding the Apotheosis of St. Louis, the statue of King Louis IX of France, that stands outside the museum. It was the rst time the area had been tented since 2018, resulting in a unique and memorable space.
Dinner was held inside the museum in both Sculpture Hall and Grigg Gallery which were converted into enchanted gardens led with owers. Banquette seating areas were surrounded with cherry blossom trees and hydrangeas.
The couple worked with Cheree Berry Paper & Design to create a
custom fall pattern that was used throughout the wedding.
“We incorporated the couple’s signature print in the escort card wall, as a wallpaper for the back bars, and in the personalized menu each guest received,” said Eastman.
Following dinner, guests returned to the tent for music and dancing.
“The way they pulled the park in and made it part of their event was unique. What is more iconic for a wedding in St. Louis than dancing on Art Hill around the King Louie statue with the art museum in the background?” said Heckemeyer.
At the end of the evening guests were treated to dessert and late-night snacks. Guests left the wedding with a fresh beignet in a doggy bag decorated with a drawing of the couple’s dog.

Every fall in mid-October the Ring of Fire at the top of Art Hill begins to glow as the leaves on the trees turn a vibrant shade of red. This phenomenon was the inspiration for the October 19 wedding at the Saint Louis Art Museum.
“The third week of October is when the colors change. They brought the park into the museum by pulling a lot of those fall colors into their celebration,” said Heckemeyer.
Fall colors of red, orange, yellow and light green were used throughout the event. The orist emphasized texture and dimension by combining owers such as dahlias and ranunculus with fall foliage,
branches and leaves.
The couple used the beautiful outdoor South Terrace of the museum as the setting for their ceremony. They prepared personalized vows and found a special way to remember a loved one.
“The groom’s father passed away a few years ago so they placed one of his shirts on a chair to save him a seat at the ceremony. It was a beautiful way to honor him,” said Eastman.
After cocktails on the South Terrace, the wedding moved inside the museum for dinner in Sculpture Hall and dancing in Grigg Gallery.

When planning a wedding, the owers you choose can signi cantly impact the overall atmosphere. From bouquets to centerpieces, orals are an essential part of the aesthetic you aim to create. To achieve Pinterest-worthy arrangements with the exact blooms brides desire, owers are often shipped internationally. However, with increasing environmental concerns and the risk of owers not arriving as promised, Elizabeth “Luli” Fichter, owner of Queen Bee Blooms, is working to change the narrative. She is introducing the concept of slow, ethical, locally
grown orals to St. Louis couples.
“What you see on Pinterest often features owers own in from across the world,” Fichter said. “Most of the owers that come into the United States are shipped on jets from South America, Northern Europe, and Africa. They’ve been boxed up and transported worldwide.”
Fichter, a farmer- orist, combines her expertise in growing owers with her oral design skills. She explained, “There are people who grow owers and sell them wholesale but don’t design with them. Others buy owers solely for design purposes or grow them to sell at farmers' markets. A farmer- orist is someone
From Field to Bouquet
who not only knows how to grow owers but also how to design with them.” She added, “I sort of went in backwards—I knew how to design before I learned how to grow.”
Fichter’s journey into farmer- oristry began while helping to plan weddings and create oral arrangements at Kuhs Farm, a family-owned property hosting weddings since 2009. Initially, she supplemented her homegrown owers with wholesale options, but the limitations of wholesale owers became apparent over time.
“There was one instance when a bride wanted a speci c rose for her bouquet. I ordered it through a wholesaler, but it didn’t arrive,” Fichter said. “I had to have an honest conversation with her, explaining that while the rose she wanted wouldn’t be available, we could achieve a similar effect using local blooms that t her vision.”
This pivotal moment inspired Fichter to take control of the process and commit to growing her owers, reducing reliance on wholesalers. “Over the years, I’ve grown more to eliminate the need for wholesale owers. Now, I can grow varieties most orists or brides have never
seen,” she said.
Fichter of cially launched Queen Bee Blooms this year, a oral design business that cultivates owers from seed to event. “I wanted this to be its own entity, separate from Kuhs Farm,” she said. Since then, Queen Bee Blooms has created orals for over 40 weddings annually, both at Kuhs Farm and other venues.
On her 164-acre farm, Fichter grows over 25,000 plants across 200 varieties. She balances perennials that return each year with new annuals to cater to evolving tastes. “I’ve grown owers speci cally for brides' color palettes and textures,” she said.
Despite logistical challenges, Fichter nds growing owers a rewarding process. She plants most of her owers from seed, which creates a deep connection to her work. “Knowing everything about the plant—from its struggles to its triumphs—makes it personal,” she said. “There’s something special about showing someone a ower you grew yourself.”
Fichter also emphasized the natural beauty of locally grown owers. “Flowers shipped internationally don’t have the same movement.

Locally grown owers, shaped by wind and other natural elements, develop curves in their stems that add to their uniqueness.”
Beyond aesthetics, Fichter values sustainability. “Imported owers come with environmental costs, like jet fuel emissions, and often involve labor conditions that are less than ideal,” she explained. Supporting local farmerorists not only bene ts the environment but also strengthens the local economy.
“It’s something you can feel good about— supporting women-owned businesses, boosting the local economy, and getting a superior product,” she said.
For Fichter, trust is a cornerstone of her work. “The highest compliment I receive is when clients say, ‘I trust you completely. I know it’s going to be beautiful.’ That trust allows me to create something unique and meaningful,” she said.
Working with local owers also requires understanding their seasonality. Fichter
encourages couples to embrace what’s in bloom during their wedding season. “If a bride wants a peony in September, I’ll explain why it’s unavailable and suggest alternatives, like a dahlia, that offer a similar effect,” she said.
Fichter believes couples gain a greater appreciation for their owers once they understand the effort behind them. “If you fall in love with the ‘why’—the sustainability and uniqueness—you’ll embrace the natural variations,” she said.
One unique service Queen Bee Blooms offers is turning wedding bouquets into seeds for a garden that can be replanted year after year. “We can dry the bouquet so you can commemorate your wedding with owers that bloom every season,” she said.
Ultimately, Fichter’s work blends artistry, sustainability, and a deep connection to her clients’ visions. “There’s magic in creating something unexpected that brings joy,” she said.

MAKING IT LEGAL
Though procuring a wedding license isn’t quite as complicated as the wedding itself, it helps to know the rules. Here they are:
1. All applicants in Missouri and Illinois must receive a license before the ceremony; Saint Louis Bride recommends a minimum of 24 hours. Blood tests are not required in either state.
2. A Missouri license is valid for thirty days from its e ective date; an Illinois license for sixty days.
3. Both bride and groom must apply in person. In Missouri, you may apply for a license at any o ce provided the wedding is to take place within the state. In Illinois, you must apply for and receive a license from the county in which the ceremony will take place.

BEYOND THE DAY Words of Wisdom
As we bring this issue to a close, we’re making a small but meaningful change to this nal page. Traditionally, it’s been a space for a farewell photo, a moment in time that celebrates the joy of the day. Now, on this last page, you’ll nd conversations with couples who have walked the path of marriage with grace and wisdom. Meet Dawn + Erwin married on August 6, 1994. They re ect on their wedding day and offer timeless advice on building a lasting partnership.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR WEDDING DAY.
Dawn: We were married on August 6, 1994 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Naperville, IL, with a reception at the Naperville Country Club. It was a magical day! There were three bridesmaids and three groomsmen. Our colors were garnet and white, as garnet was one of the colors of Erwin's fraternity, and I thought it to be a classic combination.
Erwin: I loved when our pastor had us face our guests during the ceremony, it created such a beautiful connection with everyone present.
Dawn: One of my favorite memories at the reception was when we cut the cake Erwin playfully smashed the piece of cake into my face during the moment when the couple shares a bite of the cake. It would have been far more comical for me had it not went up my nose as well, but that's Erwin’s sense of humor!
WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM PLANNING YOUR WEDDING?
Dawn: When we got married, there was a saying that weddings are not for the bride and groom but for the parents. We chose to have our mothers help plan the wedding and reception, and they went for it! They made all the party favors and decorated like crazy! It was wonderful to have them involved to take care of the details.
Erwin: I still joke about my father-in-law offering us $5,000 to elope.
WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST MARRIAGE INSIGHT?
Dawn: Communication changes over time, and humor helps keep things light. Listen, be compassionate and laugh together.
Erwin: Empathetic listening is everything. Take the time to know yourself before making the commitment to another.
ANY RITUALS THAT KEEP YOU CLOSE?
Dawn: Saturday coffee dates are our favorite.
Erwin: Supporting Dawn’s independence while being present has been key.
HOW DO YOU KEEP THE ROMANCE ALIVE?
Dawn: Simple, thoughtful gestures.
Erwin: I always say, ‘See you soon’ when leaving, it’s our little thing.
WHAT’S YOUR SECRET TO A LONG MARRIAGE?
Dawn: A sense of humor and remembering the commitment we made to each other.
Erwin: Loving fully in the good times sustains you through the hard ones.
