I
n this issue of Where Wine Country you’ll find inspiration for creating your own itinerary to explore California’s most famous winegrowing region. Imagine yourself taking a scenic walk by the vineyards, sipping wine surrounded by contemporary art or splurging on a once-in-alifetime experience like a private hot air balloon ride or tickets for an international film festival with visiting A-listers. The area is booming, with new restaurants, attractions, shops and entertainment venues opening right and left (read more on p. 12). Still, the main draw is still of course the world-class wines, grown in the prestigious appellations found in Napa, Sonoma and the Tri-Valley.
But oenophiles aren’t the only ones making the trip to Wine Country. It’s the perfect getaway for anyone who wants to relax and enjoy the finer things in life. You can catch a show, peruse an art gallery, take a train ride, dip in a mud bath or eat at a Michelin-star restaurant. And today, even a winery visit can be an all-day affair, with tasting experiences that incorporate picnics, yoga, cave tours, gondola rides, cooking classes and other activities (read more on p. 14). How did you get in the wine industry?
What do you like about working in Northern California Wine Country?
My father, who came over from Italy at a young age, always wanted to be a farmer. I grew up driving tractors and picking grapes. My grandfather was a winemaker; my greatgrandfather was a winemaker. I just always loved wine and it was a part of the family. I had an epiphany at 14 when I was enjoying a delicious, oaky, buttery Chardonnay at Easter with my family. I knew then that I wanted to go to UC Davis and become a winemaker.
The climate. The weather is awesome when it comes to food and wine. We have the best farm-to-table food. I travel a lot, and whether it’s to Dallas, New York or Chicago, I enjoy coming home to the best restaurants in the world!
What are some trends you’ve noticed in local winemaking? I think today it’s not as popular to try to mimic a specific style or capture a certain audience. People are going out and doing their own thing, trying different varietals.
Fifteen years ago it was a trend to use oak upright fermentation tanks, and now people are trying concrete fermentation tanks. Back in the day there were more trends, but if you look at the Charles Smiths of today, they’re following their own personalities.
Can you name a few of the region’s best vintages from the past decade or so? The year 2007 was really special. I started at Trinchero Napa Valley that year, and it really stands out to me. More recently, it’s 2013. I’ve been drinking a lot of 2013 wines, and they’re really good. 2017 I W H E R E W I N E CO U N T R Y 11

What to sip and savor in wine country
Gordon Huether [Installation Ar tist]
Napa-based artist Gordon Huether is best known for his large-scale, site-specific installations marked by the use of glass, light, rich colors and found objects. In recent years, Huether has also become more visible in the local community, serving on the Napa City Planning Commission. He founded his wine country studio in 1987, and since then, he’s gone on to earn a stream of public and private art commissions from airports, corporations, hospitals and museums all over the world. Wine Country visitors can admire his work in public spaces around Napa as well as at a number of wineries, including Artesa Winery, where he’s served as the artist-in-residence for almost two decades, and the newly opened Blue Note jazz club in downtown Napa. His large, freshly renovated Napa studio, home to a gallery with a rotating selection of his own fine art as well as work by guest artists, is free and open to the public on weekdays. 1821 Monticello Rd., Napa, 707.255.5954, gordonheuther.com What are your favorite Wine Country restaurants? Angèle and Cole’s Chop House here in Napa are my favorites. These two restaurants are classic Napa and were the first restaurants to appear at the beginning of Napa’s renaissance more than a decade ago. The people, the service, the food and the ambiance are second to none.
What local wines have you been enjoying lately? There are just too many to name! I would recommend people visit the Bounty Hunter wine shop in downtown Napa for an incredible collection of hard to find wines.
How does Wine Country influence your art? I’m inspired by the natural beauty and the diverse and high quality architecture of this place.

Do you have a favorite vista point in the region?
My favorite views are from Sterling Vineyards in Calistoga. The only way to get up to their winery is by gondola. It’s a little adventure just getting to the top of their hill! What’s your favorite time of day in Wine Country? The perfect time of day depends on the time of year, but for me I love the early morning winters. It’s misty weather. Everything has a layer of moisture on it, and it simply feels magical. What’s your best advice for visitors planning a day trip to the area? I would start by visiting the
Napa Valley Welcome Center at 600 Main St. in downtown Napa. The staff there is friendly and very well informed on all things Napa Valley. They can help you put a customized itinerary together for your Wine Country adventure. Or visit their website at visitnapavalley.com. Where would you send art lovers visiting Wine Country? We have some amazing art venues here in Napa! The Hess Collection, the di Rosa art preserve and Hall Winery are my top three recommendations. All three are private collections that are open to the public for viewing and inspiration.

What do you love about living and working in Wine Country? I have lived in Napa most of my life and wouldn’t live anywhere else. The extraordinary presence of nature is inspiring for sure. I crisscross the country on a regular basis and am always so happy to come home to this place we call Napa Valley.
