Taste

Sometimes the best way to learn a city is through its food, or food tours in this case. Culinary endeavors are extraordinary in Tucson—the city was recently designated as a “World City of Gastronomy” by UNESCO. Taste of Tucson Downtown’s guides take groups along a historical tour of the city with stop-offs for tastings and talks with the chefs at popular eateries like Agustin Kitchen and Maynards Market & Kitchen. The four-hour journey stops at Hotel Congress and Fox Tucson Theatre, among other sites of significance, and hops on the streetcar for a short ride (www.tasteoftucsondowntown. com). Be sure to take note of the architectural highlights and cultural sites pointed out during Tucson Food Tours’ Downtown Tucson Walking Tour. Six restaurants are visited during this lunchtime adventure, including La Cocina in the historic Presidio district (www. foodtourstucson.com). And Reisen Arizona Day Tours explores the Old Pueblo, with a stop for lunch at El Charro Café or Tucson Tamale Company, during the Tucson City Tour. Or head south to visit Big Nose Kate’s Saloon during the Tombstone tour (www.reisenarizona.com).

Trek

Tucson Bike Tours

For a leisurely self-tour, pick up a Turquoise Trail map at the Tucson Visitor Center (811 N. Euclid Ave.). The trail follows a 2.5-mile loop and visits 23 sites, including the Pima County Courthouse, Scottish Rite Cathedral, Tucson Museum of Art & Historic Block, and Armory Park. For those feeling more adventuresome, Tucson Bike Tours explores historically rich neighborhoods like Barrio Viejo, downtown and Presidio during sunrise, daytime and nighttime tours. The bike tours include a bike, helmet, water and guide (www.tucsonbiketours.com).

Trail Dust Town is a miniature town within the city,

showcasing an authentic Old West atmosphere. The town, which first opened in 1962 and rebuilt after a fire in 1971, features shops, amusement rides, stunt shows and the popular Pinnacle Peak Steakhouse (www.traildusttown.com). Stunt shows are also found at Old Tucson. The site acted as the set of a number of Western movies and shows over the years, including “Gunfight at the O.K. Corral,” “Joe Kidd,” “Three Amigos” and “Little House on the Prairie.” Today, it attracts the occasional indie film and plenty of visitors. Historic tours are offered, Old West shows are performed, games and rides entertain kids and Western shopping posts engage souvenir seekers (www.oldtucson.com). In Tombstone, Allen Street remains near as it was in peak mining days. Wander the dirt road, stop in saloons, tour the Bird Cage Theatre and see a gunfight at the O.K. MARKET & RESTAURANT Within a year of opening, 5 Points Market & Restaurant (now in their second year) was praised by the New York Times for its flavorful food and casual, hip service. Their globally inspired, from-scratch brunch has also been widely celebrated by publications throughout Arizona. The historic restored building, freshly roasted coffee and espresso, and organic innovative pastry program have all received accolades. Fresh bold flavor is due in part to the bounty of farmers, ranchers, growers and artisans providing the kitchen and market with local, fresh, sustainably harvested food. DINING LE RENDEZ-VOUS— French. Brasserie

Le Rendez-Vous Open for business since 1981! The original owner, Jean-Claude Berger, retired a few years back and handed the reins to his first son, Gordon Berger. Since that time the restaurant has had a face-lift, bringing with it a more modern feel. “We’ve redone the menu, the bar, and the decor. We are now lighter on the wallet, offer happy hour specials, and have a small plate menu”, says Gordon. Le Rendez-Vous is the perfect place for an impressive business engagement or a romantic interlude. A distinguished wine cellar and exquisite desserts promise a memorable dining experience. expanse of protected land filled with stately saguaro cacti flanks Tucson to the east and west. The eastern Rincon and western Tucson mountain ranges both offer hiking, biking and horseback

riding trails, as well as loop roads for motorized expeditions. In the Tucson district, hundreds of petroglyphs left by ancient Native tribes can be spotted easily from the Signal Hill picnic site. www.nps.gov/sagu. Park headquarters: 3693 S. Old Spanish Trail, 520.733.5153. Tucson Map B4

Road Trips PHOENIX— Arizona’s capital city has

undergone a metamorphosis. The evidence is obvious: a light rail mass transit system, the CityScape shopping and entertainment district, and several hotel and high-rise residential projects. Visit top destinations like the Phoenix Art Museum, Heard Museum, Talking Stick Resort Arena (NBA Suns, WNBA Mercury), Chase Field (MLB Diamondbacks), Heritage Square and several performance theaters. Drive time from Tucson: 90 to 120 minutes. www.visit phoenix.com. Arizona Map C5

SCOTTSDALE— You can still buy a cowboy

hat, a pair of cowboy boots, Western and American Indian art, souvenirs and a hand-scooped sundae here. An influx of hipster investors and a boom in infill development have just added edgier art galleries, trendy gelato shops and mixed-use high-rise developments to the landscape. Pedestrians have it easy, festivals are plentiful, and parking is still free. Drive time from Tucson: 90 to 120 minutes. www.experiencescottsdale. com. Arizona Map C5 TOMBSTONE — “The town too tough to

die” sits about an hour southeast of Tucson. Tombstone prospered as a silver-mining town in the 1880s, and survived in the 20th century thanks to visitors’ curiosity about the town’s infamous bygone residents, Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday, and their legendary shootout at the O.K. Corral. www. tombstonechamber.com. From Tucson: Interstate 10 west to Highway 80. Arizona Map E7

Tucson Your Way UNIQUE TRAVEL RECOMMENDATIONS, FIT TO MATCH YOUR PERSONAL STYLE.

Road Trippers

Taste Testers

Souvenir Shoppers

Drivers headed south of Tucson on Interstate 19 stumble upon the crafty town of (1) Tubac, home to a historic Spanish presidio. Today, Tubac operates as a colorful artists’ town filled with galleries and studios. Stray southeast of Tucson, along Interstate 10 to Highway 80 and the town of (2) Tombstone, where visitors immerse themselves in the Old West along Allen Street. Continue on Highway 80 to the mile-high town of (3) Bisbee to gain insights into mining life during the Queen Mine Tour and wander the town’s quaint downtown.

Begin in downtown Tucson at (1) Borderlands Brewing Company for tastes of desert-inspired brews like the La Morena brown ale, made with locally grown pecans from Green Valley Pecan Company. Head south to Sonoita and Elgin, where vineyards neighbor one another along open landscapes. Among them, (2) Kief-Joshua Vineyards fills its tasting flights with its Chenin Blanc, Tempranillo, Magdalena and other popular pours. Nearby, (3) Elgin Distillery sits adjacent to The Village of Elgin Winery, and guests stop by for its brandy, whisky and rum.

Local artwork, handcrafted American Indian jewelry, Oaxacan carvings and Mata Ortiz pottery from (1) The Shops at Tohono Chul are perfect take-homes after meandering the gardens of Tohono Chul Park. At (2) Native Seeds/SEARCH, pick up some indigenous seed packets for your garden, along with locally made chile powder and mole sauce. And upcycled art and décor created by more than 100 local artists is found at 4th Avenue’s (3) Pop-Cycle. Items range from state-shaped necklace charms to cacti-imprinted leather handbags to fused metal art.
