New Delhi, JuNe 9 (iANS): Noting that the recent general elections were a “turning point” in the “evolution of democratic polity” in the country, President Pranab Mukherjee Monday said that by voting in the Narendra Modi government the people have declared they want to see a vibrant, dynamic and prosperous India. Addressing a joint session of both houses of parliament, Mukherjee said: “The people of India have given a clear mandate. They want to see a vibrant, dynamic and prosperous India. They want to see a resurgent India regaining the admiration and respect of the international community. “Brimming with hope and expectation, they want quick results. With three Ds of Democracy, Demography and Demand on our side, India is poised to actualize these aspirations. We must rise to the occasion to fulfill these great expectations. “In 60 months from now, we should be able to say with confidence and pride that we have done it,” the president said. Modi during his election campaign had said that if he and his government are given 60 months to perform then they will take India down the road to progress. The president began his 55-minute speech by congratulating the people for voting in record numbers. He hoped that “the sessions ahead with heavy legislative agenda will be productive and useful”. Congratulating the election commission and the official machinery, the presidentsaiditisa“matterofgreat satisfaction that the general elections were smooth and largely peaceful”. “The unprecedented interest shown by the people of India in the elections is a sign of progressive deepening of our vibrant

democracy,”Mukherjeesaid, as he outlined the agenda of the Modi government. He also congratulated Sumitra Mahajan, an eight-time MP from Indore, who was unanimously elected Lok Sabha Speaker Friday. “This has been an election of hope. It marks a turning point in the evolution of our democratic polity,” the president said about the election process that gave a majority to the Bharatiya Janata Party. “The surge in aspirations and the belief that these could be realized through democratic processes, has been amply reflected in the record 66.4 percent participation by voters, and a clear verdict in favour of a single political party after a gap of nearly 30 years,” he added. The president said the country needed a strong and stable government that could provide effective leadership. “In my Republic Day speech earlier this year, I had hoped for 2014 to be a year of healing after the fractured and contentious politics of the previous years. Standing here today, I applaud the wisdom of my fellow citizens for having voted for stability, honesty and development in a resurgent India in which corruption will have no place. “My government will work to fulfill these aspirations; with the involvement of all the 125 crore people of this great country,” he added. Mukherjee also said that the government was committed to nurturing the right environment for actualizing the huge mandate of the people. “My government will function on the mantra of ‘Minimum Government, Maximum Governance’. In all our actions, we will be guided by the core values of our great civilization,” he added. Related news on p8

partners in India’s progress’ New Delhi, JuNe 9 (iANS): President Pranab Mukherjee Monday underlined the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government’s resolve to reach out to the minorities, promising that they would be “equal partners in India’s progress”. ‘Zero tolerance for crimes against women’

New Delhi, JuNe 9 (iANS): President Pranab Mukherjee Monday said the government will have a policy of “zero tolerance” for violence against women, and was committed to providing 33 percent reservation to women in parliament and state legislatures. The president also said the government will strengthen the criminal

justice system to provide for effective implementation of laws in tackling crimes against women. The rape and hanging of two teenaged girls in Badaun in Uttar Pradesh last month is the latest incident of crime against women that has caused nationwide shock and horror. UN Secretary General Ban ki-Moon expressed horror

at the crime, saying he was appalled by the brutal rape and gruesome murder of the two teenaged women. The US state department has also said that it is horrified to learn of these violent sexual assaults and murders. The president said: “My government recognizes the important role our women play in the development of our society and growth of the

nation.Itiscommittedtoproviding 33 percent reservation to them in the parliament and state legislative assemblies.” He said the government is committed to “Beti Bachao - Beti Padhao” (Save Girl Child, Teach Girl Child), and will launch a mass campaign for saving the girl child and enabling her education. “It will structure a comprehensive scheme, incorporat-

extremism and fundamentalist elements. The meeting discussed the emergence of Maoists in Dibrugarh, Tinsukia and South Cachar of Assam and felt the need for a comprehensive plan to deal effectively with them. Assam Chief Secretary Jitesh Khosla requested the MHA to take up strengthening of the mobile network service in the State with the DoT, particularly in Karbi Anglong, in the backdrop of the recent incident. “Mobile network is very weak in areas like Karbi Anglong.” Khosla explained that this hampers operations against extremists in inaccessible and difficult terrains. “Our humble request to MHA is that it should pursue the matter with DoT so that mobile towers are installed soon in places like Karbi Anglong. It will be of great help to us.” Joint Secretary, MHA (in charge of North East), Shambhu Singh assured that MHA would take up the matter with DoT for early installation of mobile towers in far flung places. “DoT is planning to install 7,000 mobile towers in the North East region alone, mostly along the borders. We will soon take up the matter with DoT to strengthen the mobile network services in Karbi Anglong as well as Dima Hasao districts,” Singh added. National Advisory Council (NAC) during the UPA government had suggested preparation of a comprehensive telecom plan exclusive to North Eastern region. NAC had recommended that given the importance of this sector to other areas of the development, it is recommended that the government look at telecom services in the North East Region as an“essential service” and not just an “obligation”.

Fans have put up flags in Mokokchung town in a run up to the FIFA World Cup 2014.

Morung Express news Mokokchung | June 9

Age no bar. Sex no bar. It’s football season again, when young and old, boys and girls, men and women, have only one thought on their mind, football and their favorite team. With two days to go for the FIFA World Cup 2014 to kick-start in the football powerhouse, Brazil, Mokokchung is upbeat about the start of the greatest tournament in the sporting world. And it’s tradition again. Flags of participating countries have been put up at most of the houses. Here you know which family supports which team. But there are some houses that have put up multiple flags, indicating the different supporters of different countries in a family. As each of the

teams exit the World Cup as the game progresses, the defeated team’s flag would be removed from the houses. Brazil, Germany and Argentina seem to be the favorites this season. But there are flags of Greece, Japan, England and some other countries put up proudly in different colonies. Some taxis have been painted with the flags of Germany along with the ‘swastika.’ Interestingly, most fans have been supporting the same team each for the past many years. There is no shift in allegiance, except for some. Many private vehicles and commercial taxis have also put up flags of participating countries. The spirit is alive. Meanwhile, a small shop in the heart of Mokokchung town is selling miniature flags, to be put up in cars,

like hot cakes. Most buy the Brazilian or the Argentinean flags which cost Rs. 150 apiece. The flags are hand stitched and put on a bamboo stick, to be tied to the frame of a car. People have no problem shelling out this amount to show their support for their favorite team. Of course, flags of other participating countries also find buyers. While the FIFA World Cup always finds huge interest in the football crazy Naga society, Mokokchung town might be a step ahead in showing their ardent love for football. Last World Cup final, a group of youngsters under the banner of ‘I Love Mokokchung’ Facebook group successfully screened the final match between Netherlands and Spain in 2010 at Imlong Place at the heart of town. This year, a similar event is being prepared for, expected to be bigger and better. Though the live matches will be telecast early morning at around 1:30am, there will be many who will stay up and watch the matches, and for a month, the early morning silence will be broken by shouts from respective families as a goal is scored or saved. It’s football time! But it’s not just during the World Cup that the citizens show an interest in football. If you don’t follow the English Premier League, or the La Liga and other football leagues, then you could be left out in discussions while sitting or hanging out with friends. This FIFA World Cup 2014 will be no lesser than the previous years’ World Cups. The beautiful game is on, and you feel it in Mokokchung.
