ASU starts 2nd phase ILP verification drive Our Correspondent Kohima |August 10

The Angami Students’ Union (ASU) today started its second phase of ILP verification drive here at its office premises. This verification drive will continue till August 17. Those individuals who were unable to get themselves verified during the first phase have been directed to come to the ASU office near All India Radio (AIR) station from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Stating that all the concerned should be verified within a week, ASU warned “extreme action” will be taken against the defaulters in its third phase. Moreover, the Union will also be taking initiative in deporting the defaulters. This was stated by ASU Information & Press Secretary Khriezelhou Vitso and verification committee Convenor Viraseto Neikha. It may be recalled that 4079 non-local inhabitants of the state capital responded to the first phase of the verification drive. ASU in its earlier press statement said that the Union was “extremely alarmed” by the demographic threats posed by overwhelming influx of illegal immigrants. “While we foresee inconveniences to many genuine citizens towards affecting this exercise, we urge all citizens to co-operate so as to counter this threat collectively,” the release stated.

Lincoln joins NSCN (IM)

C M Y K

Dimapur, august 10 (mExN): The NSCN (IM) has stated in a press release that D.T. Lincoln, the NSCN (K) Supervisor of Ceasefire Monitoring Board has joined them after “defecting to K-group more than two years back.” On his “return” to Hebron, he is said to have expressed his “lack of political farsightedness and regretted his error of acting in hurry.” According to the MIP, he disclosed that there was “nothing in Khaplang group that shows any seriousness in the Naga political issue” as he is focused only on “his relationship with the Myanmar government.” The MIP has also stated Lincoln as having said that Khaplang is “least bothered about Naga reconciliation” and is “exploiting and fooling the Nagas in the name of Naga sovereignty by way of extorting the Nagas and business groups.”

‘Sustaining self-reliance in a time of rapid change’ Morung Express News Dimapur | August 10

The rapid transition of the Nagas from a traditional economy to a currency economy brought on by modernity has created evident problems. Additional Chief Secretary & Finance Commissioner, Toshi Aier, admitted to this at a seminar organized by Dimapur Changkikong Senso Telongjem (DCST) here today. “Our people gave up a way of life that was practiced for centuries in the span of a few decades,” he said in his capacity as a resource person, highlighting a chronic challenge concerning Nagas today: selfreliance in a transitional phase. The theme for the seminar was ‘A good citizen who can sustain through

self reliance in a time of rapid change and growth’. According to Aier, Nagas were traditionally a self-reliant and self-sufficient people. With statehood came better educational opportunities and the consequent government jobs, gradually allowing people “to drift away from the traditional way of life.” The people were further exposed to the culture of seeking and obtaining government grants and subsidies, which to a great extent contributed to creating an impression in the minds of most people “that one could make a living without having to work so hard in the fields.” He said that the rapid transition from a traditional economy to currency economy brought on by modernity further increased the

need for money. Yet amidst the gloom, “there is room and potential to grow and a chance for our society to yet evolve into a thriving economy...” According to Aier, Naga youth today are emerging as capable and intelligent people, making it “an important phase for us.” Dwelling on economic self-reliance, he said that it depends to a large extent on creating an ideal environment conducive to business. However, the economic environment today is far from ideal, it was added. By conducive, he meant an environment in which there is “proper focus and management of resources that creates a healthy demand and supply chain that will provide a sustainable business en-

vironment” and importantly “social harmony and community involvement.” “What is more important is that we learn to evolve and adapt to changing times and stay afloat.” “So, how does one become self-reliant in an economy which is essentially salary-driven?” Changing the way we think, the will to work hard unceasingly, building trust, value for money, having a long term perspective of things, identifying strengths and weaknesses while taking concrete steps to address them, studying why people and businesses fail or succeed, understanding individual duties and responsibilities in relation to the role of the government were some of the propositions Aier put forward.

KolKata, august 10 (iaNs): The showdown between West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s government and the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) over a separate Gorkhaland state is intensifying with every passing day as both parties up the ante. Even as life in North Bengal’s Darjeeling Hills remains crippled following GJM’s indefinite shutdown, a defiant Mamata Banerjee regime continued its crackdown on the movement, this time by blocking the services of major cable operators in Darjeeling town, resulting in disruption of services in most homes. While the government has cited absence of valid documents behind the move, the GJM termed it an undemocratic action aimed at suppressing its movement. “The government has clamped down on the operators because they aired channels which highlighted the people’s protests. By this move, it wants to keep the people in the dark and suppress the movement,” said GJM assistant general secretary Benoy Tamang. The Gorkha outfit has not only threatened to take legal recourse against the prohibition, but in a retaliatory move asked cellular operators to remove their towers as they caused pollution and endangered life. “We have asked the mobile operators to remove their network towers as they

Mamata gives 72-hour ultimatum, Gorkha party warns of bloodshed KolKata/DarjEEliNg, august 10 (iaNs): The West Bengal government and the GJM were virtually on the warpath Saturday with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee giving the latter a 72-hour ultimatum to end its ongoing indefinite shutdown in Darjeeling hills or face “strong action” while the Gorkha party warned of “bloodshed”. Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) president Bimal Gurung demanded Banerjee withdraw her ultimatum, and warned of “bloodshed” and a “people’s curfew” if she stuck to her stand, even as life remained stalled in the three hill sub-divisions - Darjeeling, Kurseong and Kalimpong - of Darjeeling district for eight days due to the shutdown called to press for a Gorkhaland state. “I give them 72 hours to withdraw their shutdown. We have tolerated for eight days enough is enough. I cannot tolerate the whole state suffering forthe political interests of a few,” Banerjee told media persons in Kolkata. “If they do not withdraw the shutdown, then as per the court’s order we will be compelled to take strong action... when required we have to take strong medicines,” she said citing a Calcutta High Court directive asking the state government to ensure there was no forcible shutdown. cause pollution, endangering precious human life,” said GJM chief Bimal Gurung, adding that the party will move court against the government’s order to block cable services. The state government, on the other hand, has termed Gurung’s threat as “politically motivated”. “The mobile towers are there for years now. Why didn’t he raise the issue earlier? Is it a new ploy to create pressure on the people, who are already suffering because of this shutdown,” wondered North Bengal Development Minister Gautam Deb, who

also defended the blocking of the cable services, saying it was “routine”. While GJM representatives are camping in Delhi to press for their demands before the central leadership, the Hills continue to be on the boil as another Gorkhaland supporter attempted self-immolation. A 32-yearold physically challenged man, while participating in a procession, set himself on fire. He is undergoing treatment with nearly 40 percent burns. Earlier a GJM activist succumbed to his injuries after setting himself afire in Kalimpong town.

GoI reminded on disputing BPL income rate Our Correspondent Kohima | August 10

BJP Schedule Tribe Morcha national vice president Johnny G. Rengma on Friday reminded the Government of India (GoI) that the Planning Commission disputing the income rate of Below Poverty Line (BPL) was directly the tribal community because BPL are mostly tribal people in India. Talking to media persons here Friday, he said the entire Nagaland is a tribal state and if the Planning Commission maintains the figure that they have recently come forward with, the budgetary planning for the BPL and also states like Nagaland will further suffer. He urged GoI to come out with a certain proposal for the tribal people. Exuding confidence that BJP will form the next government at the centre, Rengma assured that the BJP would deliver justice to the need of the tribal people.

Darjeeling blacks out Television screens

Ongoing strike impacts operation of tea gardens

ue our agitation and will not enter into a dialogue with the Bengal government.” TV sets went blank all across Darjeeling at 9.30pm on Thursday. Police raided the offices of local TV channels Himali, Darjeeling Television and Hamro and confiscated tapes and transmitters. Then, the only two cable TV operators in town were told to pull the plug on all programmes, not just the news capsules created by these three channels. District officials on Friday denied the gag charge and said that the cable operators’ and channels’ papers were not in order. The clampdown led to

an outburst of anger. More people gathered on the streets on Friday than any other in the weeklong agitation. “Cable TV had kept many people indoors. But with nothing to watch on TV, not even serials or music, more people came out to take part in rallies and processions,” said a GJM leader. Rumours flew thick and fast, provoking anger and outrage. Morcha leaders had to step in repeatedly to stop mobs from going over the edge. Chowk Bazar, a favourite meeting place of the locals, turned into the gossip centre. And the epicenter of Friday’s surge of anxiety. Word spread in the morning of scores of GJM ac-

tivists being arrested, working the crowd into a fury. It was only after Morcha leaders rushed to assure that no arrests had been made since Thursday that tempers cooled. In the afternoon, there was fresh rumour of Bimal Gurung’s passport being revoked. Once again, Morcha leaders had to step in to quell tension. Late in the afternoon, rumours of a battalion of CRPF marching up the hills to suppress the statehood agitation triggered anger. As the crowds prepared for a confrontation, there was more electrifying rumour that the administration planned to cut electricity supply from Saturday. The people start-

ed shouting slogans against chief minister Mamata Banerjee. The Morcha again had to do some firefighting. The cable blackout has united the Hills rivals. CPRM and other Darjeeling Opposition parties joined the Morcha in condemning the gag order. So did the Darjeeling Press Guild. “This is a sinister move to suppress the Gorkhaland movement, but it won’t work. The Mamata Banerjee government was attracting a lot of negative publicity even on national TV for its insensitivity towards the Gorkhas and the Gorkhaland movement. Hence this clampdown,” said Morcha assistant secretary Binay Tamang.

After that, the picture will become clear on how many of us can continue despite these difficulties or how many cannot,” said S. S. The demands for separate states in Assam have recently led to largescale violence and agitations with the hill district of Karbi Anglong witnessing the killing of two persons besides injuring several others.

aGartala, auGust 10 (iaNs): The decision to create a new state of Telangana out of Andhra Pradesh has enthused a tribal party in Tripura to reiterate its demand to make a separate state. The Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), a party that draws its support from tribal people and having only a small support base, has demanded that the Tribal Autonomous District Council (TADC) be upgraded, and a new separate state be formed from Tripura. The TADC, which has been playing a key role for the socio-economic development of tribals, has ju-

risdiction over two-thirds of Tripura’s geographical area. It was set up in 1985. Tribals constitute a third of Tripura’s 3.7 million people. The IPFT, which first raised the demand for a separate state several years ago, has so far failed to garner support even from within the indigenous tribal people. The ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) in Tripura, the main opposition Congress and its electoral ally Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura, also a tribal based party, strongly opposed the IPFT’s separate statehood demand.

“We are now carrying out awareness and mass contact programmes among the tribals and a rally will be held here Aug 23 to press for the demand for a separate state. Leaders of such movements seeking a separate state from other parts of the country too will be invited to address the rally,” IPFT general secretary Aghore Debbarma told IANS. He accused the Left Front government of creating a “lame duck institution” having no real power to ensure the development of indigenous people. The IPFT will submit a memorandum to Governor Deva-

nand Konwar Aug 23 to push for its demand. “The fundamental problems of the people have not been solved by the TADC. They continue to lose their land. Even the state of Kokborok language of the indigenous people is miserable,” Debbarma said. CPI-M spokesman and senior party leader Gautam Das told IANS: “A small state like Tripura cannot be divided further. The IPFT is merely trying to regain its lost relevance in state politics by raising such an unrealistic demand.” Das said that even the indigenous tribal people do not support IPFT’s demand.

aiZawl, auGust 10 (tNN): the Mizoram government has started the process of implementing the Food Security Scheme ahead of the assembly polls in December. State food, civil supplies and consumer affairs department officials said the Centre has been apprised of the possible problems to be faced by Mizoram if the scheme is implemented. Secretary for food, civil supplies and consumer affairs R Lalvena said the department was making all out efforts to implement the scheme even when the Centre’s response to their intimations on the problems is yet to be received. Earlier, the target population of beneficiaries under the scheme was 6,33,000. But the Centre increased the

number to 7,06,000 recently, an official said. According to the latest instruction, about 70 per cent of the population of the state would receive 5 kg of rice at the rate of Rs 3 a kg every month under the scheme. Under the present public distribution system (PDS), all people in the state received 8 kg of rice a month and the state required 1,33,000 quintals of rice a month purchased at the cost of Rs 18.19 crore, the official added. “If the Centre discontinues the current public distribution system, the Mizoram government, in order to cover all the people, would have to pay an additional Rs 7.82 crore a month and if the PDS is continued, the additional expenses would be Rs 2 crore,” he said.

Chief minister Lal Thanhawla, after attending the meeting of Congress chief ministers on Food Security Scheme at the residence of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi in Delhi, told newsmen in Aizawl that the state would not implement the scheme due to fiscal crunch. Lal Thanhawla and food, civil supplies and consumer affairs minister H Rohluna on July 24 informed the assembly that the state government was making efforts to implement the scheme before the expiry of the deadline. However, while addressing an official function later, the chief minister had said the implementation of the scheme would bring more miseries to the poor people.

shillONG, auGust 10 (tNN): Sand mining in Meghalaya, which has no mining policy yet, is rampant despite the recent ban imposed by National Green Tribunal across the country on mining or removal of sand from river beds. Hills are being mercilessly razed to the ground in Meghalaya, especially along the rivers, for quarrying of stones and sand, destroying the unique flora and fauna and sources of water in the process. The NGT’s recent directive was prompted by the suspension of Durga Shakti Nagpal, an IAS officer, who had taken on the sand mafia in Uttar Pradesh. Nevertheless, the Meghalaya government seems to be least bothered in implementing

the NGT order with sand banking unabated along the hill streams and rivers. “River quarrying might lead to a catastrophy in Meghalaya like Uttarakhand if immediate measures are not taken to check the menace,” says eminent environmentalist and president of Meghalaya People’s Environment Rights Forum (MPERF) Naba Bhattacharjee. Pointing out large-scale mining of limestone and coal in the Jaintia and Garo Hills of the state in gross violation of the Forest Regulation Act, Bhattacharjee said government officials who have connived in the plunder of natural resources should also be taken to task. Saying that the state

government has taken no initiative to regulate rampant mining in Meghalaya, he added that MPERF would be compelled to file a leave petition in Supreme Court if the state fails to comply within 90 days from the date of the order. Observing that the state government has always cited that it has control over only 5 per cent of the land, while the remaining 95 per cent is in private occupation, Bhattacharjee said this was a “lame excuse” as there was enough provision in the United Khasi-Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (Management and Control of Forests) Act, 1958 for the district councils to act in case of environmental depredation.

ister Gaikhangam, Deputy Director General of Police Y Joykumar and top police officials rushed to the spot. No arrest was made so far in connection with the incident. After the blast, heavy police personnel present at the site conducted a cordon and search operation in the area around the Chief Minister’s bungalow. Gaikhangam who is also the state Home Minister condemned the blast and said it was ‘unfortunate.’ He said the public will sense a security lapse over the explosion that took place at the heavily-guarded bungalow and underscored the need for re-arranging, strengthening and regulating the security measures. Earlier, militants carried out an attack on the bungalow. He said, “The Home

Department takes the Saturday’s blast seriously. We have discussed the matter very seriously.” Gaikhangam said the security personnel providing protection to the public as well as the Government need to execute their duties sincerely. Asked about the CCTVs installed in Imphal city, including the Chief Minister’s bungalow, Gaikhangam informed reporters that the state Government now cannot maintain most of them well due to certain reasons. He, however, said that these CCTVs will be repaired soon. The Deputy Chief Minister while expressing concern over the reported kidnapping of two officials of state Horticulture Department said the Government believes the duo will be

freed safe and sound very soon as negotiations are on to secure their release. He appealed to the concerned militant group to release the two officials safely and warned of stringent actions to militant organizations that are often indulged in kidnapping for ransom. The two officials of Manipur Government’s Horticulture Department were reportedly abducted by suspected Kuki militants near Kanglatombi bazaar under Sekmai Police Station in Senapati district on the night of August 8. Gaikhangam also urged the militant groups which are under Suspension of Operation (SoO) and ceasefire not to violate the agreements and to think for peace.

If the intention was to deny publicity to Gorkha Janmukti Morcha’s renewed agitation for Gorkhaland, the effect was just the opposite. Rumours, gossip and half-truths swirled in the charged up air of this Hills town, heightening tension and triggering cries of ghettoization. Morcha chief Bimal Gurung called it a “Taliban-style gag” and said: “We will not be surprised if mobile telephone services are stopped next. We will contin-

Fuel crisis in Manipur due to torrential rains and landslides

imPhal, auGust 10 (aNi): A fuel crisis has hit the state of Manipur following heavy rains and landslides blocking the movement of fuel supplying vehicles on National Highway 2. Manipur has been virtually cut off for a month. Since July, the supply of essential commodities has been affected due to a shutdown call followed by a subsequent massive landslide near Kohima city. The rubble of the landslide was just cleared three days ago. Long queues were seen in front of petrol outlets as people had to wait from morning till noon to get the fuel. The fuel was being administered with limited supply to each vehicle. Rajiv, a consumer waiting at the fuel station, said the scarcity of fuel had taken toll on their business and urged the state government to address their woes. “There is big problem of fuel and there is no diesel too because of which we are not able to use our vehicles. Meanwhile, aregionalorganization, theKukiStateDemand Committee (KSDC), has announced a 48-hour shutdown in all Kuki inhabited areas in Manipur with effect from midnight of August 13. The Naga body is pushing for a separate administration(AlternativeArrangement)fromtheManipurgovernment whiletheKukibodyisdemandingaseparateKukistatehoodby carving out ‘Kuki areas’ in Manipur. Given this picture, Manipur, especially the hill districts where the Nagas and the Kukis are in large numbers, would witness shutdown for four days. This would also mean that the vehicular movement on the national highways and roads linking the state capital Imphal with the rest of the country will also be disrupted.

Bomb explodes outside Manipur CM’s residence IMPHAL | August 10

Call it the lapse in the security measure, a bomb was exploded right in front of the main gate of Manipur Chief Minister’s bungalow here around 6:30 pm Saturday but no casualty was reported in the incident. Today’s blast has come amidst tight security measures being taken up in the run up to the Independence Day celebration. Search operations and frisking have been intensifying in the past ten days in and around Imphal so that no untoward incident happens during this year’s Independence Day celebrations. international market that is highly competitive. Naturally, apart from causing immediate business loss, the situation is also bound to impart long term ill-effect,” added Mr. Bagaria. “We have left tea out of bandh purview,” said Bimal Gurung, President, Gorkha Janamkti Morcha that has called the indefinite bandh on demand of separate statehood for Darjeeling. But, with hardly any vehicle plying, now tea gardens are out of fuel and other supplies. Processed stocks are also getting piled up in stores. According to DTA statistics, there are 87 Gardens in Darjeeling processing around 10 million KG of made tea per annum. “Month of August, called as delayed Second Flush period, is a high green leaf yielding month contributing 15 per cent to annual output. But we cannot store

green leaf. Storing made tea at this monsoon is also difficult as that needs reprocessing for de-moisturization. That will significantly increase production cost making our produce uncompetitive in international market,” said Bagaria. As learnt, already 8 lakh kg of made tea got stored in different gardens. “We need to pay our workers in cash. With banks closed, we are in shortage of that and cannot run workers payment with small amount of reserve cash. This may develop a serious law and order situation soon giving a different dimension to our crisis,” said Mukherjee. As estimated, “We have already lost a business of around Rs 10 crore and it is growing up every day,” said Mukherjee. And as worried Bagaria puts it: “Darjeeling tea is already pushed to the brink.”

In a claustrophobic atmosphere surcharged with confused priorities it is an opportune moment to spend some quality time to analyze our predicament. Scenario I: The Nagas declared their historical and inherent right as a Nation free of foreign yoke on 14th August 1947. To anchor this claim for self determination a National Movement emerged in the form of NNC and the Federal Government of Nagaland. Up to this point the honorable National picture is untarnished. Then all hell broke loose with Shillong Accord of 1975. NSCN picked up the broken pieces. Human frailties and suspicion took over the reigns and since then we have had a multi-fragmentation of this organization mushrooming into so many unexplained Factions. The people of Nagaland have watched all these self destructive developments from a distance with complete detachment and indifference as if it has nothing to do with them. Not a single determined question has been raised by any apex forum or organization to compel all the factions to publically

explain their stand and their differences that has induced them to stay apart despite the objective being the same. It is not enough for one faction to give a blanket verbiage that they are fighting for sovereignty. So are all the other. All of them are. No! This is not enough! This is a core definition that is owed to the people by all the factions to explain the legitimacy of their existence. It could be for a valid reason as much as it may not. It would however provide the citizens of Nagaland an opportunity to understand, appreciate and endeavor for a constructive corrective alternative of unity with clarity for all our sakes. Thus far, we have allowed confusion to reign supreme instead. We have allowed ourselves to be sucked into the vortex of the storm. Scenario II: The negative cascading impact of so many undefined factions in existence has perpetuated the problem that we now wrestle with. With the birth of an organization comes the inalienable need of funds to keep it operational. Therefore… taxation. Gun scare aside, since we have not and do not seem to want them to explain their presence we

must therefore necessarily bear the responsibility to fend for the expenses for all the eight factions, whether their existence is legitimate or otherwise. That is the price we pay for our indifference. Scenario III: Greed takes precedence over sovereignty. Now all the factions selfishly lose control and create their separate network of taxation directly and through their dealership syndicates for every conceivable commodity on earth. The common man gets overburdened with heavy taxation at every turn and cries out in pain at the uncontrolled spiraling of living cost impossible to negotiate. They finally realize that they are damned to continue like this. This intolerable pressure on daily existence finally gives birth to ACAUT who picks up the cudgel that the Naga Hoho should rightly have done, had they not preferred to hoisted their yellow flag and instead concentrate on contract and supply work. Scenario IV: The ACAUT is the outcome of the will of the people expressing their utter frustration and inability to tolerate the continuous threat of guns and taxation every waking

moment of their lives for so very long a time. The people of Nagaland want to be relieved of all the accesses being committed to the extremities. The people of Nagaland do not see any other ghost “intelligence groups” trying to create division other than to see the most corrupted threat of the underground greed in the guise of sovereign taxation. Yet the NSCN (IM) has the audacity to term ACAUT as an “illegal organization” with “no voice” to teach them what to do and not to do on taxation. (Nagaland Post 10th August 2013). This is gun backed arrogance at its best. Given all the organizations in Nagaland the ACAUT at present carries the deepest gratitude and endorsement of all the common people of Nagaland who form the majority. It is not the prerogative of the NSCN (IM) to recognize or derecognize ACAUT as legal or illegal neither is it required. The oppressed people of Nagaland have this authority and they not only RECOGNIZE it as the MOST LEGAL ORGANIZATION in Nagaland but cheer them on to honestly and fairly give their best with courage so that this dastardly homemade yoke is removed. he Hon'ble Ato Kilonser of NSCN (IM), Th. Muivah was gracious enough to meet members of ACAUT on 9th August at Hebron Camp and grant audience to our grievances related to multiple taxations and syndicate system prevalent in the market. After lengthy deliberations where members of ACAUT including leading Naga entrepreneurs expressed concern over the present taxation policy of the Naga national workers, the NSCN (IM) acceded to most of our requests as raised in our memorandum submitted to the Hon'ble Ato Kilonser on 28th May.

As per our memorandum, the NSCN (IM) has come up with their taxation policy which is positive and an indication of their maturity in tackling issues. In the light of the above, ACAUT would like to clarify that the meeting was a definite breakthrough and not as reported in certain sections of media. ACAUT is grateful to NSCN (IM) for having concern and choosing to address the issues related to the grievances of the common man and the two parties also agreed to address any issue amicably and in the spirit of cordiality. issued by ACAut Media Cell

Examination, Nagaland University

W

hat is wrong with our university today? It is in our conscience that something is wrong with the system. We the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) batch 2012 of Nagaland College of Teacher Education (NCTE) Kohima started our academic session on 1st February 2012. We appeared our first semester examination from 25th June to 5th July 2012 and our Second semester i.e. final examination from 10th December to 12th December 2012. It may be mentioned here that the result of First Semester Exam was declared in the month of February 2013 i.e. six (6) months after the exam. Also the result of the Final Semester was declared only in the month of July 2013 and we waited for more than another six (6) months to get the result, where as the University Grant Commissions (UGC) rule is only for sixty (60) days i.e. two (2) months. We were hoping that everything would be fine after the long wait but we are saddened to disclose that they were many unexpected mis-

takes found when we went to collect our mark sheets. It can be said that the errors cannot be referred to something as “printing mistakes”. Some of the “worst” mistakes which were found on the mark sheets that really make us annoyed and disappointed are: 1. There were lots of spelling mistakes on the candidates’ names. 2. The candidates who were present on the examination day were marked absent. 3. The final semester exam was held in the month of December where as it was wrongly entered as June. 4. Registration numbers were wrongly entered. Therefore, we urge and appeal the authority to look into the matter seriously and rectify the same at the earliest because it gives a clear picture that the University is playing with the students’ career. And the question that strikes our mind is for how long do we have to wait again? Kedoroko Casavi

Factions (yes I am aware that they resent being referred to as undergrounds but have they honorably earned any other name?) must realize that the common man is now desperately struggling for his individual sovereignty to survive from day to day. It is for NSCN (IM) and all the other underground factions to see the writings on the wall, if gray matter still exists amongst them beyond their insatiable greed. It says “don’t kill the goose that is laying the golden eggs”. Their garden of Aden will stop bearing fruits at the rate they all are strangling their people and poisoning the soil. Better senses should prevail through temperance of their accesses. Finally, reading a column in Eastern Mirror of 10th August 2013 that said “one official from the NSCN (IM) even warned ACAUT that strong action would be initiated if ACAUT tries to brainwash people by expanding its association to other districts in Nagaland” really takes the cake. Yet again the brawn rearing its head to suppress the brain… Does it take a hungry man to be brainwashed to look for food? It comes naturally and instinc-

tively. The people of Nagaland may not have reached the point of starvation but the road they are travelling on is awfully rough and difficult to negotiate like that of the Nagaland PWD roads. They would want to smoothen it out with or without threat from that official. If Mr. Official is the reading type checks out Nagaland Post 10th August 2013 publication. ACAUT did not have to prompt or ‘brainwash’ the people of Zunheboto and yet they have formed a Steering Committee Against Price Rise and Unabated Taxation (SCAPRUT) and proposes to hold a meeting on the 12th of August at Hotel Heritage, wherever that is. Way to go Zunheboto way to go! That NSCN (IM) official should attend this meeting and threaten them as well? Meanwhile I have not been able to help myself from thinking aloud what has happened to all the good people of other Districts of Nagaland as if this is a problem of strangers that does not impact on them directly. Their tails must be tired being tucked between their legs for so long. They should un-tuck it and relieve themselves like some other Districts are doing. The time is now!

Look Beyond M.B.B.S and B.E

R

esults of JEE 2013 have been declared and many parents whose children could not secure medical & engineering seats of their choice might be spending depressed days and sleepless nights worrying about the future of their children. Do not worry so much my friends; there are many avenues for your children to pursue for a bright future. Most of us have developed a misconception that medical and engineering are the only fields of study that would ensure a bright future for our children. There is no denial that these professions are the first choice for many talented people. But we must not forget that every field of study offers good scope for those who excel in whatever they study. The present state of technical education in our country is highly discouraging. The Vice Chancellor of a reputed Technical University recently told that more than 70 % of the engineering graduates in our country are unemployable. The commercialization of professional education has lead to the mushrooming of engineering colleges in many states and the result is the production of lakhs and lakhs of unemployable engineers.

Therefore, one should be more careful before selecting his / her college of study so that he /she could get themselves included in the list of employable engineers. I would give a simple statistics regarding the state of affairs of engineering education in my home state Tamilnadu so that you could assess the condition of the same in the other states. There are 560 engineering colleges in Tamilnadu and nearly Two Lakh B.E seats (50% of total seats) are reserved to be filled by the Govt. on merit basis. This year, out of this two lakh Govt. quota seats only one lakh twenty three thousand seats are filled and 77,000 seats remain vacant and get lapsed. Interestingly, NO seat remain vacant in Govt. colleges where as there are no takers for large number of seats in many private colleges. The reason; students are well aware of the quality of education offered in those institutions (Shall we dream of such a situation in Nagaland?). Even though the state of medical education has not deteriorated like that of technical education, the trend is definitely not encouraging. Everyone knows the cost of seats in the private medical colleges but the worries of getting

admission in private medical colleges are now restricted mainly to the elite class of our society. (Ultimately the common men have to reimburse the cost of study of these upper class doctors through the unnecessary medical bills). In the present situation, the conventional degree courses stand as one of the best options for many talented students. Numerous choices are available for the students and there is good demand for research scholars in all the subjects. Parents and Teachers should help children to identify their inherent field of interest and should expose them to the variety of courses available in the fields of Arts, Science, Commerce, Humanity, Music, Fashion etc. so that children could get admitted in to the right course in the right institution. Let us keep one thing in mind. In the coming decades very few jobs would be available in the Govt. sector and most of the works would be outsourced to the private sector. The degrees alone will not help to find a placement because the private sector would recruit only those who have knowledge and competency. Nellayappan B Principal Govt. crying for reconciliation and peace amongst all the Naga freedom fighters, it expressed concern that despite people condemning the fratricidal killings, the voices of the public are disappearing in thin air. “Thousand of Nagas have shed their blood and lost their lives from the hands of their own Naga brethrens, but so far we

find no solution from such killings.” Stating this, SUK has fervently appealed to all Nagas Nationalists to desist and refrain from killing each other in any form, be it in public places, towns, villages etc. Meanwhile, the Union conveyed its heartiest condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for the departed soul to rest in eternal peace.

R

oad plays a vital role in the economic development. History reminds us that, economic prosperity of a nation was not only because of the advancement in technologies but it was the road condition that promotes all round development. Today, if we view the road map of Nagaland in a living organism perspective and consider road as a vein, then the “Land of Festivals” will resemble a sick / paralysed person. Unlike dictatorial setup of government, the priority of people’s elected government is to elevate socio-economic condition of its citizens. The competence and integrity of any government is measured by the level of prosperity in human welfare. We are living in the era of “Global village” where developed nations formulate economic policy to control less developed nations. Yet both investor and host nation benefit from each other. Nearing to 50 years of statehood, but so far no worth naming companies from outside has invested in the state. Of the many obstacles, road condition is the most important sector that hinders outsider’s investment. In 2003, the then Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee, gave a historical comment on the only worth National Highway of Nagaland. He remarked, “I was told that of all the roads in the state this is the best. If this is the best, it is difficult to imagine how bad the worst is.” What is the impact of his remark? After nearly 10 years of his comment I simply realised that his message has conveyed the negative image of the state government. Who will like to invest in a state where even National Highway failed to uphold its status? Since then whenever top leaders of our country visit, they are airlifted. In short “Time management”. Thanks to their busy schedule. In 2012, citizen registered their discontent over the road condition in the form of “Mission potholes” and many dramas were staged on the road but unfortunately it failed to give much impact. The voice of the citizen slowly dies away and we still travel in the same potholed road. Person who has travelled length and breadth of Nagaland will agree with me that there is hardly any road worth to be called road. Imagine how sick person, pregnant women, aged person etc., travel in such type of road. This visibly indicates depriving of right to life. Fortunately, Naga drivers are too expert in dealing with the potholes otherwise incident like Mumbai will happen every day in our road. What is the use of quality road and compensation after a life is taken, when all the comfort can be provided beforehand. The road we travel is not secure and it usually takes 24 hours to cover 100 kms. For forward people it is crime to waste a time but for Nagas, time is for time past and that is the reason why we are still behind. Dynamic leaders of Nagaland have visited countless places in India and may have witnessed the road condition. Nagaland is not the only hilly state in India but still other hilly states can afford to have good road. Road is our face, it reflects the health of our economy.

When outsiders visit, they first give comments on our road condition. They never comment on the palatial building by the road side and they never talk about the types of cars on the road. Potholes resemble pimples on our face. No matter how impressive we dress. People look at our face and comment. I think we need to take care of our skin. We talk big about our rich culture and tradition to the world. No doubt, we have a rich traditional history but we are not the only human race in the world that has rich culture. The richness of culture and tradition is measured by the extent of development and not by advertisement. The third batch of DAN has just set their feet in school and it is premature to anticipate quality result from them. However, in the recently concluded 12th Nagaland Legislative Assembly not much has been discuss about the pathetic condition of the road. It is really unfortunate that only Rs. 66 lakhs is earmarked for road maintenance and on the other hand, Rs. 4, 54, 50,000 is set for purchasing vehicles for people’s representative. Our respected leaders have enough vehicles but none opposed the idea. I wish some wise leaders said “let’s divert the fund for road maintenance”. Instead, discussion was on for maintenance of the vehicles. If well-off people are so apprehensive about vehicle maintenance what will be the condition of the common people? Chief Minister of Nagaland shows an example by refusing to buy a car for himself but regrettably none followed. Our leaders need to learn some ethical value of politic from the Chief Minister of West Bengal and Tripura. They are much ahead of Nagaland in teams of SGDP but still they drive a car which middle class people in Nagaland drive. People’s welfare is their top priority. Who is answerable to this pathetic condi-

tion of road? What is the Govt.’s guideline for construction of road in Nagaland and how is quality managed? All black topping vanishes in one season and public never hear Govt. initiating action on those responsible. Govt and person responsible for road construction should keep in mind that citizen have the right to travel in all weather road without having any apprehension of encountering landslide, potholes etc. Road is an important part of our environment and negligence of this sector is amounting to Human rights violation though there is no explicit right to a healthy environment in the constitution of India. However, the courts have acknowledged that environmental rights are part of fundamental right to life. Right to life has been interpreted in Article 21 of the Indian Constitution “No person shall be deprived of his life or personal liberty except according to procedures established by law”. In my opinion, Human rights violation is not only when a person is subjected to torture, cruelty, inhuman treatment/ punishment, but it also includes when a person is subjected to live in unfavourable environment. Citizens are conscious of their right and are aware that their basic right to life in healthy environment has been violated. During rainy season, road turns into waterways, main road in town and city turns into fishery pond, landslide, mudslide, runoff, gully erosion etc are regular features. Again in dry season one will experience a desert drive. I’m sure people who adore adventuring in wild road and desert will definitely love our road. Unless, the responsible department seriously apply the mitigation measures the problems will continue in the days to come. Soyhunlo Seb Telecom Ward Tseminyu Town

t would not be an overstatement to say that Ideal Play Abacus India Pvt Ltd is one of the pioneering companies in India. Currently it enjoys the prestigious honor as the fourth rank company in imparting quality education in the world. In India alone, it has around 850 centres, distributed all over the country, with more than 80,000 students who are brandishing their intellectual caliber with the various programs offered under IPA. Set up women entrepreneurs in order to develop the mathematical and brain skills of young children, IPA is affiliated to Play Abacus Snd. Bnd, Malaysia and also to Guang Xi Abacus Association, China. The IPA centre in Nagaland has completed its 5th year of catering to the intellectual needs of the children. The journey so far has been a reflection of the success of IPA all over the country, and for which all the glory and honour is given to our almighty God for His gracious providence. At present, the institution has more than 200 students, with 15 dedicated instructors. IPA trains the children to use the right and left halves of the human brain effectively at the same time and at the right age. Thereby enhance memory,

Also there is overall brain development focusing on right brain. speed, self-confidence, retention, memory power concentration and HUMAN BRAIN - LEFT AND RIGHT overall academic performance. The Human brain has two halves: Basic reasons for the right and the left. The left-brain is linear and logical. using the abacus tool Today, we live in an era of comThe right brain is intuitive. When confronted with problems, puters. However, it is for this reason the left-brain being logical, reasons out that the abacus education becomes how intense will be the problem and more necessary. The abacus educaallowing that to prevail on the mind, will make a person give up his goal. The way the right brain interprets the goal is different. It is not logical but creative and thinks about new methods to reach the goal. The right brain is able to "VISUALISE" the final scene of goal achievement and will not rest till newer methods of reaching the goal are found. Best Learning Age According to analysis, the development and growth of the brain will begin from 4 to 6 years at a high speed, the progression will then slow down after 12 years when growth reaches 75%. In order to give equal reign to the overall intelligence of the cerebrum, both the right and left brain must be trained at the same time at the right age. The creativity function from the right brain needs to be boosted by the information stored in the left-brain, in order for the child to become an excellent scientist, engineer, designer or businessperson. With ABACUS the children would be trained to use the right and left halves of the human brain effectively. This would help them concentrate better, acquire logical thinking powers coupled with speed and achieve the ultimate goal of scoring the maximum.

concentration, speed and accuracy, creativity and imaging skills, self-confidence, listening skills. The instructors are equipped with the latest teaching methods and kits to facilitate the student’s mental growth and overall personality development. Understanding the need to address every student personally, the institute maintains a strict 5:1 student-instructor ratio. This quality-oriented policy is adopted to prepare the students and make each one of them a force to reckon with in the various competitive exams, both national as well as in the international arena. The institute also provides special classes during the holidays. Realizing that not all the students possess equal levels of intelligence, special attention is given to the students basing on their areas of weaknesses. The testimony of parents and students alike speaks for the tremendous improvement in academic activities seen in the students after joining IPA. This course is specially designed for brain training and development, with radical techniques and methods of learning. As the level of learning increases, the students often find it difficult at times and tend to give up. Therefore, parental care and support can go a long way in ensuring the successful completion of the courses. For the student that

completes the prescribed course, it is a cent percent success story of growth and improvement. The institute also conducts math Olympiad where the students can display their skills and talents in solving brain-straining questions using nothing save their power of imagination. This is also held in the national level where students can get chance to represent the state in the grand stage. The aim and objective of this institute is not some short-term impact in the lives of the students. Rather, its aim is to mould and shape the students’ intellectual capacity from the very beginning, making the foundations firm so that they can grow up to be men and women who can excel in everything, and be agents of progress and development in the near future. IPA classes are held every Saturday for a two-hour period. At present there are nine centres spread across Dimapur, Kohima, Mokokchung, Ungma, Changtongya, Tzukidong and Chumukedima. Proud to be part of IPa

Ideal Play Abacus helped my kids to enhance mental calculation and ability through speed and accuracy and made mathematics enjoyable and fun. I have experienced joy and contentment on observing my kids’ improvement in concentration and time conscious. That is the beauty of Ideal Play Abacus to me. Credit goes to all the committed teachers of IPA and I extend my good wishes and support to our institute. Dr. T. Temsu Lemtur (Parent) tion meets the needs of today's professional society. In this professional society, a life ignorant of recording and calculating does not exist. By using the abacus method regularly, the four basic operations (+,- ,x, /) can easily be done with the mind. With constant practice of the abacus, especially that of also mental arithmetic, the interaction between the left and the right parts of the brain in an instant, cause stimulation that greatly benefits the brain. In China and Japan, senior high-level students who have reached the highest level in Zhusuan also did the best in overall scores in other courses. The best learning time for your child is between 4-12 years. The find-

ing from experiments is, the systematical training of upper brain is able to change the operation of the lower brain, inclusive of health, achievements in sport, energy and spiritual, motive and stamina. The famous boxer Mohamed Ali is a good example. He kept repeating a same action message to induce the sub-consciousness function of his lower brain in order to make him succeed in hitting his competitors during the tournament. Today, many of the countries apply these repeating exercises in the brain for best result. While training the children with the abacus, the brain is given repetitive exercise to trigger development.

Ideal Play Abacus has helped me solve mathematical problems faster, helped in mental calculation and enhanced my memory and concentration ability. I would advice every student to join Ideal Play Abacus as it is beneficial for overall development. Odilemla Walling (Basic Level Graduate)

Ideal Play Abacus has made a great impact in the mathematical feature of my children. After joining the IPA, it seems calculation of sums have become more efficient and precise. Usage of time in calculating the mathematical sums has also improved a lot. It is a wonder that my children have now adopted mental calculations while doing sums. IPA has changed the way my children perceived mathematics. Y. Denngan Avennoho (Parent)

Ideal Play Abacus have motivated my children, gave them self confidence and even better, have made them more active and attentive. IPA has not only helped them to improve calculation but also is helping them to visualize the problems and then work out the result. The beads and the process of physically solving mathematical problems make IPA training a very interesting option for my children. The fact that mathematics in considered to be a tough subject can be disproved now after joining IPA. Toshisenla (Parent) Initially resources were scarce and expectations frighteningly high, yet, the positive response and the confidence that the students and the parents had upon us, we are now having our brightest moment of laughter, joy and feelings of achievements. We have witnessed as to how the IPA students have succeeded from weak to average and from average to excellence. We started with the dream of making the IPA a model organisation (co-curricular educational institution) and from the mark that the IPA children are making, we now know that it is not impossible. Ajungla Imsong (Senior instructor) My child is too much interested in Abacus class. I have witnessed great improvement in Mathematics after joining IPA. So I would suggest every child to join this learning centre as Abacus is more important than any other co-curricular activities. Ruma (Parent)

Abacus, perhaps an earlier invention but it’s simple usefulness can’t be alternated and still a better way to exercise one’s mind both physically, mentally and visually. It is a must-take-up activity especially for the students to determine the future endeavour. I may not have had the chance to be one among the fortunate student to exercise my young mind using abacus method of learning, but today I’am one among the most fortunate few to be a trained instructor at IPA. I learn how to exercise my mind more as I teach the students. Asenla Pongen (Instructor)

Some of the students during the annual meet, 2012.

Joining Ideal Play Abacus helped me in mental calculations in my daily life. It also helps in exercising my brain and save time during mental activities. I thank my instructors for their sincere guidance and my parents for their encouragement and support when I faced difficulties during the learning process in abacus. I will always be thankful to my instructors for their gift to me. Imtiyala (Basic Level Graduate)

Gospel-Centered Kids Historic non-stop prayer Raising in a Gospel-Hating World sweeps Muslim Indonesia World’s Largest Muslim Population

A

George Thomas | CBN News

powerful prayer movement is rising in the world’s largest Muslim nation. Twentyfour hours a day, seven days a week, Indonesian Christians intercede for their country. It was a scene never witnessed before in Indonesia’s history. “I don’t know another nation on earth like Indonesia where the church has become so passionate and united in prayer,” Tom Victor, with the American-based Great Commission Coalition, said. A Worldwide Prayer Call

Last year, more than 9,000 Christians from around the world descended on the Indonesian archipelago for a massive prayer gathering led by scores of Indonesian churches united to see the name of Jesus Christ lifted. Dr. Bambang Widjaya was a key architect of the event. “We can see the zeal, not only among the evangelical or Pente-

costals, but also in the mainline churches and Catholic that we need to spread the Good News of Christ all over the country,” Widjaya said. Global prayer leaders were amazed at the Indonesian believers’ unity in praying for their country and the world. “I just think the Father is looking out on the corridors of heaven and he’s saying, ‘Hey, Jesus, come here. Look! Look! Look down at Indonesia,” Victor exclaimed. “Hey, they are really loving each other, they are getting it, and they are fulfilling your prayer. Hey, watch this.” “And he’s blowing [His Holy Spirit across the country] and everything is going to a new dimension, something we don’t understand in the natural,” he continued. “There’s favor, there’s faith, there’s grace and they are transforming a nation.” Twenty-Four Hour Prayer

Jakarta sits a multi-story building that serves as a prayer tower for around-the-clock intercession. “Twenty-four hours a day we are praying for churches in Indonesia, all the pastors and lay leaders. There’s not a single hour or day that goes by without prayers lifted up for our country,” Jeffrey Petrus said. Petrus is caretaker of the prayer tower. For 12 years this simple room with several bunk beds has been his home away from home. “We take shifts of four hours a day. When people get tired, they come in here, take a short rest on one of the bunk beds, then back to praying,” he said. Dedi Purwanto works with Petrus as a prayer leader. He said the prayer rooms are packed with people at all hours of the day. Purwanto believes the prayers lifted from this place and other sites across Indonesia are shaking the spiritual foundations of his nation. “There is power when hundreds of thousands of believers meet in either small prayer groups, houses of prayer, or prayer towers like this one,” Purwanto said.

Nearly 13 percent of the globe’s Muslims live in Indonesia, making the island nation home to the world’s largest Muslim population. Located between the Indian and Pacific Oceans in Southeast Asia, Indonesia boasts a thriving economy and is one of the key political power houses in the region. “For years we’ve been praying for our government, the media, and young people. We’ve also prayed for better relations between Christians and Muslims. God is answering those prayers,” Petrus said. And Christianity is growing despite the occasional reports of Muslim harassment. Christians credit the massive prayer movement that’s connecting some 500 Indonesian cities with more than 5 million intercessors with giving them a deeper passion to see the nation and the world won for Jesus. “I do believe that there is power in prayer, especially in united prayer, like the body of Christ like this,” Rev. Daniel Pandji, who heads up Indonesia’s National Prayer Network, said. In an unprecedented show of unity, Christians filled the country’s national stadium last year, with millions more watching on television, as they pledged to reach every village, town, and city in Indonesia with the gospel of Jesus Christ. “All of the churches here in Indonesia believe that Jesus is the only answer for the country,” Dr. Widjaya said. Back at the prayer tower, Petrus and his faithful prayer warriors are on their knees. “Day and night, weekends and holidays, we’ll be here crying out to God for our country and the world,” he said. “This is our calling to be the watchmen on the walls of Indonesia.”

void fear – There are times when I feel like a captive in my home. afraid to let my kids leave the sanctuary of the home because the reality of the very real devil is much greater to me than the understanding that we have a magnificent savior. Jeremiah 29:4-7 “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: 5 Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat their produce. 6 Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease. 7 But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare. I love this Scripture in Jeremiah; it tells the captives not to hide but live out their lives in such a way that people are drawn to you, because your fulfillment is in a promise, not in a program. Exemplify the gospel to your kids – For us to parent our kids in an offensive way and not a defensive way requires us having a firm grasp of the gospel. How do we do that? 1. Understand that the gospel is offensive. Luke 6:26: 26 “Woe to you, when all people speak well of you, for so their fathers did to the false prophets. Our goal is not popularity but in knowing and conveying a beautifully offensive truth lived out by a God who loves you and me in a stunning unending fashion. - The gospel offends the part of us that feels we have to do something to be loved - The gospel offends the part of us that says living how we want is worshiping yourself - We all worship something; very often the idols in our lives are good things we make ultimate things. That’s offensive to Christians and non-Christians alike. 2. Teach your kids doctrine in a practical and intentional way. Deut 6:4-13 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.[b] 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.10 “And when the Lord your God brings you into the land that he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to

like it” attached. We have a duty to carefully study God’s Word, which is given to us so that we would know Christ and His voice, and so follow Him (John 10:27). While “duty” sounds like the least possible compelling word in the world to make us want to read the Bible, for those whose hearts are inclined toward the Lord—to those who have been given new life through the death and resurrection of Jesus—this duty is anything but a burden. It’s not like God’s given us the most boring, seemingly irrelevant book in the world to read (and even if He did, we’d still be required to read it!). It is—or should be—a joy to read and study the Bible for all Christians, to examine it diligently and see how Christ is at work on every page. We grow in knowledge of Christ’s person and character, and we grow in godliness as a result of the Holy Spirit’s work through the Scriptures. And we are all commanded to engage in this by God. How can we say no?

hy should you read the Bible, especially if reading isn’t your “thing”? Often, when we’re asked about why we should read the Bible, we appeal to personal fulfillment, the exciting stories, the grand drama of redemption within its pages. Certainly all this is good and right and true. But there’s a better reason, a more compelling reason for the Christian to read the Bible than any other. God commands you to. “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples,” Jesus told the Jews who followed him (John 8:31), and, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God’” (Matt. 4:4). We are told to “Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” by Peter (2 Pet. 3:18), sanctified in the truth of God’s Word (John 17:17), and, (Aaron Armstrong is the author of “Conlike Joshua, meditate on God’s word day and tend: Defending the Faith in a Fallen World” night, so we might be careful “to do accordand “Awaiting a Savior: The Gospel, the ing to all that is written in it” (Josh. 1:8). Isaac, and to Jacob, to give you—with great and good cities that you did not build, 11 and houses full of all good things that you did not fill, and cisterns that you did not dig, and vineyards and olive trees that you did not plant—and when you eat and are full,12 then take care lest you forget the Lord, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 13 It is the Lord your God you shall fear. Him you shall serve and by his name you shall swear. The reason why we teach our kids is so they have a proper view of God as their father. Everything we have is because of him. We have a limited amount of time that we will be able to influence our kids; we must leverage that time to teach our kids to honor to fear and to love God because he first loved us. 3. Model to your kids what loving Jesus looks like in a consistent way. Consistency is not publicly doing the right thing. Consistency is forged in a whole life that is saturated in the gospel of Jesus. • Attend church and worship at home. • Give regularly – give spontaneously. • Have a devotional Life – a Spirit filled life – be filled continually • Modeling is more than demonstration; it’s living it. 4. God is the author of our story. Romans 14:7-9 7 For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. 8 For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. 9 For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living. Understand that our grace for today is based on what Jesus did and in our hope for what he will do. “If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.―C.S. Philippians 1:21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. When our hope is in the resurrection and we walk out the implications of that, our kids will see in us something they will see nowhere else. “Parents teach your kids the gospel is not just something that begins the Christian life but empowers it, shapes it and sustains it. Pray, love, correct and demonstrate the love of God to your kids until he draws them they respond and He becomes their treasure and their great reward.” -- John Piper (Sam Luce has been the children’s pastor at Redeemer Church for over 13 years. Lee Jong-rak is a Korean pastor in South Korea. A simple man with a huge purpose, Pastor Jong-rak saw a devastating problem. He thought of a way he could change it, and he became a prophetic voice to his society. His story is a story of faith. A story of hope. A story of love. And when you hear this heroic tale, you just may never be the same. Lee Jong-rak is the creator of the Baby Box. His Baby Box is the first and only box in Korea that is for collecting abandoned babies who are physically or mentally handicapped or are just unwanted by their mothers. Hundreds of unwanted babies are abandoned on the side of the street in South Korea every year. Jong-rak knew he needed to set up a way to save the lives of these precious babies. He built a drop box on the side of his home with a humble sign reading, “Place to leave babies.” The inside of the box contains a thick towel covering the bottom, and lights and heating to keep the baby comfortable. A bell rings when someone puts a baby in the box, then Jong-rak, his wife, or staff associates come to immediately move the baby inside. His aim was to provide a life-giving alternative for desperate mothers in his city of Seoul. He even admits that he didn’t really expect that babies would come in– He was mistaken. The babies came. In the middle of the night, in the middle of the day, some with notes, some without a word, and only a very few mothers actually spoke to him face-to-face.

Pastor Jong-rak stated that one of the mothers said she “had poison to kill both herself and her baby.” He responded, “Don’t do that. Come here with your baby.” One single mother left this heart-wrenching note with her baby. The english translation follows. “My baby! Mom is so sorry. I am so sorry to make this decision. My son! I hope you to meet great parents, and I am very, very sorry . I don’t deserve to say a word. Sorry, sorry, and I love you my son. Mom loves you more than anything else. I leave you here because I don’t know who your father is. I used to think about something bad, but I guess this box is safer for you. That’s why I decided to leave you here. My son, Please forgive me.” My breath was pulled from me as I read, “I used to think about something bad but I guess this box is safer for you.” Yes, this little box is a safer place than the plans that once haunted this single mother’s mind. Because this box was an alternative, she chose life. Thus, this box would be the beginning of an previously undreamed ministry in Korea, the ministry of the Baby Box. The story of this man and his baby box is reaching the entire world with it’s own 72-minute documentary called “The Drop Box” by a young 22 year old, Brian Ivie. The documentary just won the “Best of Festival” Jubilee Award & “The Best Sanctity of Life” film award at the 8th annual San Antonio In-

dependent Christian Film Festival this past February. Ivie was stirred to do the film after reading an article in the LA Times about Pastor Jong-rak’s mission, and he decided to go to Korea to make the documentary. After seeing the testimonies of this orphanage up close, Brian Ivie’s life was changed. In his acceptance speech, Ivie said, “These kids are not mistakes. They are important.” He went on saying, “I became a Christian while making this movie. When I started to make it and I saw all these kids come through the drop box – it was like a flash from heaven, just like these kids with disabilities had crooked bodies, I have a crooked soul. And God loves me still. When it comes to this sanctity of life issue, we must realize that that faith in God is the only refuge for people who are deemed unnecessary. This world is so much about self-reliance, self-worth, and self-esteem. It’s a total illusion that we can be self-sufficient. Christ is the only thing that enables us.” The documentary that changed Brian Ivie’s life is bound to change the lives of the film’s audience. They are currently in the middle of negotiations with a major studio to release the film all over the world this fall. For now, they are asking people to join their mailing list (dropboxmovement@gmail. com) and join their page on Facebook from the link on their website www.dropboxmovie.com. As I scrolled through the stories on Facebook, I was overwhelmed to see a post dated as April 17th where one of the staff members of the Baby Box orphanage stated that they had received 5 babies in one week and to pray for them. There beside her request was a picture of five beautifully bundled babies. In my head, all I could think was, “This is the real thing. This ministry is the real thing.” Korea is not the only place that deals with child abandonment. Globally, millions of children die from abandonment. It takes different forms from country to country. In the United States, abortion serves our abandonment purposes and they call it a “woman’s choice.” Our nation is still struggling to see that these babies are human beings, too. They deserve to live just like any other human being. With incredible men and women like Pastor Lee Jong-rak, this world is seeing how life can be for these babies when we take them in; when we become a voice for the ones that cannot speak up for themselves. They are loved, they are cherished, and they are worthy just the way they are. “They’re not the unnecessary ones in the world. God sent them to the earth to use them.” -Pastor Lee Jong-rak, The Drop Box documentary Bound4Life.com

Giant stride for country: PM on nuclear reactor INS Arihant Reactor of India’s first indigenous nuclear

NEW DELHI, August 10 (PtI): Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday congratulated scientists and defence personnel on the reactor on India’s first nuclear submarine INS Arihant going critical, calling it a “giant stride” in the progress of the country’s indigenous technological capabilities. “I am delighted to learn that the nuclear propulsion reactor on board INS Arihant, India’s first indigenous nuclear powered submarine, has now achieved criticality,” the PM said in a statement.

“Today’s development represents a giant stride in the progress of our indigenous technological capabilities. It is testimony to

said. Extending congratulations to all those associated with the important milestone, particularly the de-

the ability of our scientists, technologists and defence personnel to work together for mastering complex technologies in the service of our nation’s security,” he

partment of atomic energy, the Indian Navy and the DRDO, Singh said he looked forward to the early commissioning of INS Arihant. In a major step towards

completing its nuclear triad, India activated the atomic reactor on-board the indigenous nuclear submarine INS Arihant paving the way for its operational deployment by the Navy. After the nuclear reactor is activated, the agencies concerned can work towards readying the warship for operational deployments soon. INS Arihant has been undergoing trials at Navy’s key submarine base in Vishakhapatnam and would be launched for sea trials soon since the nuclear reactor has gone critical.

NEW DELHI, August 10 (tNN): A key government arm has demanded that dalits and tribals be deemed to be poor in the ongoing headcount of the BPL category, piling pressure on UPA mandarins who have barely emerged from a raging row over the poverty line. The demand for automatic inclusion of SCs/STs and primitive tribes among the poor is significant, betraying as it does the concern that vulnerable social groups risk slipping through the identification process. The ‘socio-economic caste census’ (SECC) will identify the BPL, a category targeted by key en-

titlements schemes. Social justice minister Selja has shot off a letter to Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia, urging that SCs/STs -- besides denotified nomadic tribes and households headed by single woman/disabled -- be automatically considered as poor in the criteria being finalized for SECC. The salaried and income tax payees among them can be excluded, she added. Selja has also asked ministries of rural development and urban poverty alleviation to consult her before finalizing the criteria for identification of poor in rural and urban areas. The

demand is significant since the Centre defended the low poverty line (expenditure of Rs 27 per person in rural areas) by arguing it would have no bearing on the eligibility for entitlements that would be determined by SECC. The minister’s plea will test the government. If SCs and STs, who comprise 23% of the population, are deemed to be poor, around 20% would automatically be in the BPL list after taking out income tax payees among them. Otherwise, the number is expected to be less. The criteria of poverty finalized as of now considers dalit status as only one of the seven indi-

cators of deprivation barring manual scavengers who would be deemed to be poor. Besides SC/ST, the deprivation indicators include households that have one-room kuchha houses, are female-headed, have no adult members, have disabled members, have no literate adult and landless households. After receiving the SECC data, the ministry will grade the households on the 7-criteria deprivation index before deciding how many of them are poor. Sources said if numbers are high on deprivation index, the households may have to tick more boxes than if the numbers are low.

CHANDIgARH, August 10 (PtI): Robert Vadra’s land deals in a village in Haryana have returned to haunt the Congress party and its chief with whistleblower IAS officer Ashok Khemka alleging that Vadra “falsified documents” for 3.53 acres of land in Gurgaon and “pocketed” large premium on a commercial colony license. In his “voluminous reply” submitted to Haryana government’s three-member enquiry committee set up in October last to look into Vadra-DLF deal, Khemka is understood to have alleged that Vadra, who is Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law, executed a series of “sham transactions” for 3.53 acres of land in Shikohpur village of Gurgaon. The IAS officer alleged that the Haryana’s department of town and country planning (DTCP) “ignored

rules and regulations to allow crony capitalists operating as middlemen to flourish and appropriate market premium of a licence.” “The DTCP aided Vadra in making these sham transactions,” he alleged. Khemka, who submitted his reply on May 21, says that both the sale deed of February 12, 2008 through which Vadra’s company ‘Skylight Hospitality’ bought land from ‘Onkareshwar Properties’ and letter of intent for granting a commercial licence to his company issued by DTCP in March 2008 are “sham transactions” made to enable Vadra to collect market premium. “If there was no payment as alleged in the registered deed, can it it be said that the registered deed conferred ownership title over the said land upon Skylight Hospitality by vir-

tue of the sham sale,” he questions. Khemka, who had cancelled a land mutuation deal between Vadra and DLF last October, claims that “there was no promise to pay in the future in the registered deed.” No price was paid as claimed in the registered deed. The sale registered in the said deed cannot, therefore, be called a “sale” in true sense of the term, legal or moral and it cannot be said that Skylight Hospitality became owner of the land in question by virtue of sale registered in the deed, Khemka is understood to have said in his report running into some 100 pages. While Khemka’s reply has gone public, the officer, on being approached by PTI here said, “I will not

speak to the media on this issue.” Haryana chief secretary P K Chaudhary said, “We are examining the reply (by Khemka)”. The Haryana government’s committee had earlier this year concluded that the orders passed by Khemka initiating an enquiry into Vadra’s land deals were “without jurisdiction, inappropriate and not covered under any provisions of any statute or rules.” Besides, the committee also held that the order by Khemka cancelling the land mutation was improper. Demanding a white paper on the transfer of all such licenses permitted in the past to expose the “loot of public wealth,” Khemka writes that the DTCP had issued various types of

colony licences for a total of 21,3666 acres in the last eight years of the Bhupinder Singh Hooda government’s tenure between 2005 to 2012. He points that if the market premium for a colony licence is assumed to be as low as Rs one crore per acre, the land licensing scam in the past eight years is worth around Rs 20,000 crore. “At the premium of Rs 15.78 crore per acre that Vadra earned, this figure would jump to Rs 3.5 lakh crore,” he claims. He alleged in the letter the DTCP permitted Skylight to transfer the license to DLF in April 2012 and the licensed land was finally sold to DLF on September 18, 2012. “By allowing the transfer of licence issued in the name of Skylight to DLF, the DTCP created a black market for trading in licences where cronies are issued li-

cences which are later sold or transferred with permission of the authority for a fat consideration to the real developers,” he writes. On August 5, 2008 Skylight Hospitality entered into an unregistered collaboration agreement with DLF Universal. Khemka observes that this led to loss of crores of revenue to the state exchequer due to a collaboration agreement of this kind has to be registered. The opposition Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) has demanded a probe into the reply by Khemka by a sitting judge of the high court. INLD leader Abhay Chautala, who is also MLA from Ellenabad, said his party had thrice raised this issue in the Vidhan Sabha, but the Speaker always tried to suppress it. “All such transactions are done by the Hooda government to appease Sonia,” he alleged.

most wanted Dawood Ibrahim could be hiding underground in Pakistan and urged Indian intelligence agencies to monitor and verify. “I personally believe Pakistan is misguiding India, so that the discussions are diverted from the tension on the border Dawood Abrahim is given a new personality, new passport and is hiding underground in Pakistan possibly somewhere in Karachi and has not shifted. This, the intelli-

gence agencies must monitor and verify,” he said. He also urged India to raise questions on Shahryar Khan’s statement that Dawood was in Pakistan but has been ‘chased out’ and could be in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). “The fact that they have accepted that Dawood was in Pakistan, India must ask these questions to Pakistan straight away from when did he arrive in Pakistan, where was he staying,

why was he staying these despite international red corner notice, why was Pakistan overlooking the international laws, why was he not handed over to India back because he is known to be carrying many rackets in India including fake currency notes and killing people,” he said. “But when they say that Dawood has gone to UAE, then the second question is who helped him to go to UAE because you cannot travel

ta Party leaders also expressed their dismay over Pakistan’s activities and intentions to genuinely strengthen Indo-Pak relations. BJP spokesperson Captain Abhimanyu Sindhu said Pakistan should be declared a ‘terrorist state’. “We had been constantly giving notice as a nation to Pakistan that Dawood Ibrahim who is a prime accused in

the Mumbai blasts in 1992 is residing in Pakistan. Each time we got a response that he is not there. This is an admission, confession from the Pakistani authorities and United Nation Organisation (UNO) should take cognizance of the fact and declare Pakistan as a terrorist state. Pakistan has become a nursery of terrorist organisations in the world,” he said. BJP general secretary Rajiv Pratap Rudy said every issue of terrorism raised by Pakistan should be looked upon with suspicion. “We cannot take a Pakistani leaders statement so seriously. When Pakistan had Osama bin Laden for almost ten years and America had no clue, there is no surprise that it can hide any person. If Pakistan had Dawood, why didn’t they inform India? I believe any issue that Pakistan raises over terrorism should be looked upon with suspicion,” Rudy said. Defence Analyst Captain (Retired) Bharat Verma said that there is a high possibility that India’s

NEW DELHI/LONDON, August 10 (PtI): A day after senior Pakistan diplomat admitted that one of India’s most wanted terrorists Dawood Ibrahim was in his country, India today said the 1993 Mumbai bomb blast dossier has “never” been closed and it will not rest till those responsible for the heinous attacks were brought to justice. “We too have seen the reports which have been attributed to an official of

the Pak government. The 1993 Mumbai bomb blast dossier has never been closed by us. Therefore, now that we have received more information about it, we will not rest till those responsible of 1993 attack against our citizens in Mumbai are brought to justice wherever they are. “We will continue to pursue this,” the spokesperson in the External Affairs Ministry said. Dawood is wanted for coordinating the bomb-

ings in 1993 in Mumbai, through one of his subordinates, Tiger Memon, during which over 250 people were killed and hundreds of others injured. Yesterday, Islamabad’s pointsman for TrackII dialogue with India, Shahryar Khan had said Ibrahim had once lived in Pakistan. This was the first time that a Pakistani official had acknowledged the mob boss’ presence in the country.

submarine INS Arihant goes ‘critical’

NEW DELHI, August 10 (tNN): The miniature reactor on board India’s first indigenous nuclear submarine INS Arihant has gone “critical”, which marks a big stride towards making the country’s long-awaited “nuclear weapons triad,” an operational reality. Sources, in the early hours of Saturday, said the 83 MW pressurized lightwater reactor attained “criticality” after several

months of “checking and re-checking” of all the systems and sub-systems of the 6000-tonne submarine at the secretive ship-building centre at Visakhapatnam. INS Arihant, till now, was being tested in the harbor on shore-based, highpressure steam. With the reactor going critical now, the submarine will eventually head for open waters for extensive “sea- acceptance trials”, which will in-

At least seven villagers were killed, five others injured and about half a dozen villagers were feared to be trapped Saturday in the debris and rescue work was continuing, said Dikken Mehra, a spokesman for state-owned Mahanadi Coalfield Limited. clude firing of its 750-km range K-15 ballistic missiles. The sea trials will take at least another 18 months before INS Arihant can become fully operational. When that happens, India will finally get the long-elusive third leg of its nuclear triad — the capability to fire nuclear weapons from the land, air and sea. The first two legs — the rail and road-mobile Agni series of ballistic missiles

and fighters like Sukhoi 30MKIs and Mirage-2000s capable of delivering nuclear warheads — are already in place with the armed forces. The capability to deploy submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) is crucial since India has a declared “no first-use policy” for nuclear weapons, and hence needs a robust and viable second-strike capability.

Telangana: Jagan resigns as MP, his mother quits assembly HYDERABAD, August 10 (PtI): YSR Congress president and Kadapa MP YS Jaganmohan Reddy on Saturday tendered resignation from his Lok Sabha membership, protesting the manner in which the Congress party sought to divide Andhra Pradesh. Simultaneously, Jagan’s mother YS Vijaya, who is honorary president of YSRC and MLA from Pulivendula in Kadapa district, too, resigned from the membership of the assembly. Jagan is currently in jail on corruption charges and lodged at Chanchalguda prison here. “Jagan faxed his resignation letter to Lok Sabha Speaker through the (Chanchalguda) jail authorities. It will also be sent by post,” YSRC member of Parliament Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy told reporters here. The 40-year-old YSR Congress leader has been lodged in the jail as an “un-convicted criminal prisoner” since May 28, 2012 in the illegal assets case, being investigated by CBI. Vijaya also faxed her resignation to the Assembly Speaker’s office.“Her resignation will also be sent to the Speaker by a special messenger,” Mekapati said. YSRC has 17 MLAs and two MPs in all. Sixteen MLAs of YSRC submitted their resignation from the assembly membership two days before the Congress came out with its decision on July 30 to bifurcate the state and grant statehood to Telangana. Jagan’s fledgling political party is a strong votary of a united Andhra Pradesh. “I, too, sent my resignation to the Lok Sabha Speaker on August 5. Now, our leaders Jagan and Vijayamma have also tendered their resignations,” Mekapati said.

‘Pakistan can’t be trusted on Dawood Ibrahim issue’

Dawood Ibrahim

NEW DELHI/ NAgPuR, August 10 (ANI): Cutting across party lines, politicians on Saturday expressed their dismay and a degree of resentment over former Pakistan foreign secretary Shahryar Khan’s statement admitting mafia don Dawood Ibrahim’s presence in Pakistan. They were unanimous in their view that Pakistan has become a haven for

terrorists, but at the same time said that this could just be another tactic to divert India’s attention from the recent LoC killings. Congress leader Meem Afzal said that Pakistan cannot be trusted, because earlier they were denying the presence of Dawood in their country, and added that they are trying to divert the attention from the LoC issue. According to reports, Shahryar Khan, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s special envoy for improving relations with India, said on Friday that Dawood was in Pakistanbuthasbeen“chased out”andcouldbeintheUnited Arab Emirates (UAE). While speaking to reporters at a pre-launch event for his book “Cricket Cauldron: The Turbulent Politics of Sport in Pakistan” in London, Shahryar Khan said: “Dawood (Ibrahim) was in Pakistan, but I believe he was chased out of Pakistan. If he is in Pakistan, he should be hounded and arrested. We cannot allow such gangsters to operate from the country,” said Khan. The former diplomat added that if Dawood was still in Pakistan he would have been arrested by now. However, he later told an Indian television channel that he had never known where Dawood lived and his earlier statement was just reflecting what the Pakistani media has been reporting in the past.

Obama pledges greater transparency in surveillance programmes WASHINGTON, AuGuST 10 (ReuTeRS): President Barack Obama announced plans to limit sweeping U.S. government surveillance programmes that have come under criticism since leaks by a former spy agency contractor, saying the United States “can and must be more transparent.” “Given the history of abuse by governments, it’s right to ask questions about surveillance, particularly

as technology is reshaping every aspect of our lives,” Obama told a news conference at the White House. Saying that it was important to strike the right balance between security and civil liberties, Obama vowed to improve oversight of surveillance and restore public trust in the government’s programs. “It’s not enough for me as president to have confidence in these programs. The American people need to have confidence in them, as well,” Obama said, adding that he was confident the programs were not being abused. Obama’s announcement - made just before Obama heads for summer vacation on Martha’s Vineyard - may be greeted as a partial victory for supporters of ex-NSA contractor Edward Snowden who is now in Russia, where he was granted asylum last week. The Obama administration has vigorously pursued Snowden to bring him back to the United States to face espionage charges for leaking details of the surveillance programs to the media. “I don’t think Mr. Snowden was a patriot,” Obama said at the news confere n c e , brushing o f f

the suggestion that Friday’s announcement showed Snowden had done the right thing in revealing the extent of the government’s program. The president said he had ordered a review of the surveillance programs before Snowden provided secret documents to The Guardian and The Washington Post, but he added that there was no doubt those leaks triggered a “much more rapid, passionate response” to the issue.

Four Steps

Obama said he had decided on four specific measures. Firstly, he said, he plans to work with Congress to pursue “appropriate reforms” of Section 215 of the anti-terrorism Patriot Act that governs the collection of so-called “metadata” such as phone records. He insisted that the government had no interest in spying on ordinary Americans. Obama did not specifically lay out how the program will be reined in, however. Instead, he pledged greater oversight, greater transparency, and constraints. Civil liberties advocates wanted more details. “He said he would recommend 215 reform, but he said ‘appropriate’ reform and we don’t know what that means,” said Electronic Frontier Foundation digital rights analyst

Trevor Timm. “There were no concrete changes to the actual surveillance programs.” Outlining his second measure, Obama said he would pursue with Congress a reform of the secretive Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, which considers requests from law enforcement authorities to target an individual for intelligence gathering. Obama said he wants to let a civil liberties representative weigh in on the court’s deliberations to ensure an adversarial voice is heard. The court, authorized under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978, has been criticized for essentially rubber stamping the U.S. government’s requests to search through Americans’ electronic records. Currently, the FISA court makes its decisions on government surveillance requests without hearing from anyone but U.S. Justice Department lawyers in its closed-doors proceedings. Appointing a civil liberties advocate to argue before the surveillance court may have little value, said Carrie Cordero, director of national security studies at Georgetown University Law Center and a former Justice Department lawyer. “I will be interested to hear how this would work in practice, but as an initial reaction, I do have concerns about additional layers of bureaucracy slowing down the speed and agility of conducting counterterrorism activities,” Cordero said in an email.

Thirdly, Obama said he wants to provide more details about the NSA programs to try to restore any public trust damaged by the Snowden disclosures. The fourth measure was the creation of a high-level group of outside experts to review the U.S. surveillance effort. Gigi Sohn, head of public interest group Public Knowledge, said Obama’s plans were a good start, but added: “It’s going to depend a lot on Congress.” The American Civil Liberties Union called the proposals “a necessary and welcome first step.” Executive Director Anthony Romero said the ACLU favors revamping all U.S. surveillance programs to adhere to constitutional protections.

Privacy Vs National Security

The NSA declined to comment on Obama’s proposals. It is not clear if Congress will take up the initiatives. A number of influential lawmakers have vigorously defended the spying programs as critical tools needed to detect terrorist threats. U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein, head of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said in a statement that her panel will hold a series of hearings to study the surveillance programs. Brendan Buck, spokesman for House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner, said Republicans expect the White House to ensure that reforms do not compromise programs that protect against terrorism.

Republican Representative Peter King issued a statement stridently defending the surveillance programs and calling Obama’s reform plan “a monumental failure in presidential wartime leadership and responsibility.” The Patriot Act, launched by thenPresident George W. Bush after the September 11, 2001, attacks, was initiated as a terrorism-fighting tool to prevent a similar attack from happening again. But frequent questions have been raised about the scope of the law and whether its sweeping tactics allows unwarranted intelligence gathering on innocent Americans. The Snowden disclosures generated concerns about whether people were being forced to sacrifice their constitutionally guaranteed civil liberties in the open-ended search for terrorism links. The NSA has long monitored communications abroad but the documents released by Snowden indicated the email and phone data of Americans is being routinely monitored on a vast scale, with the cooperation of major U.S technology firms. The search for Snowden has upset U.S. relations with some Latin American countries, China and, above all, Russia. Obama this week canceled a planned summit in Moscow with President Vladimir Putin. Obama said the United States has always had tension with Russia and it was an appropriate juncture to reassess where the two nations stand.

NeW YORK, AuGuST 10 (AP): CNN’s top medical correspondent, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, says he was wrong in opposing the medical use of marijuana in the past, and he now believes the drug can have real benefits for people with specific health problems. Gupta, who is also a brain surgeon, detailed his change in an interview Friday and in an article for CNN’s website titled, “Why I changed my mind on weed.” He will narrate a documentary on the topic that will air Sunday.

I was wrong about marijuana: Gupta He wrote in Time magazine in 2009 about his opposition to laws that would make the drug available for medical purposes. Several states now allow medical marijuana. But Gupta said Friday he too easily associated marijuana with “malingerers that just wanted to get high.” Gupta said he didn’t look hard enough at research on the topic and found new research since then. Most of the research

done in the United States about marijuana is about what harm it could do. He said he’s found more research overseas that discusses the medical benefits. “We have been terribly and systematically misled for nearly 70 years in the United States, and I apologize for my own role in that,” he wrote. Two states now even allow limited recreational marijuana use, though they are moving

carefully since federal law disapproves. Gupta was encouraged to look into the issue further when he met a 5-yearold girl for whom medical marijuana has sharply reduced the seizures she had been suffering. He realized that medical professionals should be responsible for providing the best care possible, and that could include marijuana. While people die regularly from

ena said in an interview with the Voice of Russia radio station on August 6. “He has been on a difficult road. I would say a nightmarish one. He needs to go through a period of adaptation.” Kucherena, who has been the sole source of public information about Snowden, has now gone on holiday for a month, assistants at his office who took a call transferred through his mobile told AFP. “You want to talk to Kucherena about Snowden? Why talk to us? Kucherena is on holiday until September. He has not left a replacement,” said one assistant. Kucherena has said that Snowden spends his time learning Russian and reading translations of Russian novels. He also wants to try out Russian food and travel in the country. “But the level of security he needs does not allow him to take a stroll on Red Square or go fishing somewhere,” the lawyer added. According to the federal migration service, with his one-year temporary asylum Snowden has the right to go anywhere on Russian territory and take any work

outside of the civil service. Whether Snowden will ever be able to lead anything resembling a normal life in Russia remains unclear and it is possible he could still go back to his original plan of travelling on to asylum in Latin America. Snowden’s enemies might point to comments made by President Vladimir Putin himself in July 2010 in the wake of a major spy swap with the United States that the lives of “traitors” always end badly. “They finish up as drunks, addicts, on the street,” said Putin. The British double agents who fled to Moscow in Soviet times enjoyed wildly different fates. George Blake, who was sprung to freedom from Wormwood Scrubs prison in 1966, lives at the ripe age of 90 a quiet life in Moscow, where he is known as Georgy Ivanovich and enjoys receiving family visits from Britain. However, Kim Philby’s life in the Soviet Union from his flight in 1963 up until his death in 1988 was blighted by loneliness, depression and drink problems.

Snowden lies low in Russia as mystery endures

Edward Snowden speaks during an interview with The Guardian newspaper in Hong Kong on June 6.

MOSCOW, AuGuST 10 (AFP): Somewhere on Russia’s vast territory, reading books and awaiting the arrival of his father, lurks the US intelligence leaker Edward Snowden, one of the most wanted individuals on the planet. But over a week after Moscow granted him asylum, his hiding place is still unknown, adding to the aura of mystery that has surrounded the fugitive ex-intelligence contractor since he arrived in Russia on June 23. The concrete facts about Snowden’s stay in Russia, after he was allowed on August 1 to leave the Moscow airport transit zone where he had been holed up for five weeks, are at best scanty. The 30-year-old is in a “safe place”, according to his Russian lawyer Anatoly Kucherena. Yes, he is on Russian territory. He may be in Moscow, or outside. And no, his whereabouts will not be disclosed for security reasons. Snowden has been registered -- a legal obligation for any foreigner in Russia -- but it is not clear where. He is running out of money and sympathetic Russian

senator Ruslan Gattarov is organising an appeal to raise funds. Like the Abominable Snowman or aliens from outer space, there are occasional rumours of Snowden sightings but they never stand up to serious scrutiny. The United States, which wants to put Snowden on trial for leaking details of a vast surveillance programme, only found out about his obtaining asylum in Russia from the local media and has no idea where he is, according to people familiar with the situation. He has joined a select but colourful list of notorious figures who have found refuge in Russia over the last decades, including the brother of Serbian dictator Slobodan Milosevic and the British double agents who passed secrets to the USSR. Snowden is now waiting for the arrival of his father Lon, who has applied for a visa to visit Russia and may be able to travel in the next weeks. “Edward is waiting for the arrival of his parents and friends to take decisions on a range of important questions,” Kucher-

prescription drug overdoses, Gupta said he’s been unable to find a documented case of death from a marijuana overdose. Gupta said he doesn’t want people to apply his change of heart to the issue

of recreational marijuana use. As a father, he said, he wouldn’t allow his children to smoke marijuana until they are adults. If they want to, he’d urge them to wait until their mid-20s when their brains are fully developed, because of studies that show the drug can damage young people.

Novak Djokovic to face Rafael Nadal in Rogers Cup semi-final MONtREA, August 10 (AP): Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal swept into the semfinals of the Rogers Cup with rapid victories on Friday, though their upcoming semifinal will for once take second billing to an all-Canadian affair in the other half of the draw. Djokovic beat seventh-seeded Richard Gasquet of France 6-1, 6-2; and the fourth-seeded Rafael Nadal defeated Australian qualifier Marinko Matosevic 6-2, 6-4. Djokovic extended his Rogers Cup winning streak to 13 matches. A Djokovic-Nadal semifinal would normally be the feature act, but for success-starved home fans, it will be the clash of Canadian compatriots Milos Raonic and Vasek Pospisil that will take most attention.

The tournament once called the Canadian Open was guaranteed to have its first home finalist since Robert Bedard in 1958. “It means a lot, not just to us, but to Canadian tennis,” Raonic said. “It’s an opportunity, a great, great moment. At the same time, it’s another tennis match. That doesn’t change.” Pospisil became the first Canadian since Mike Belkin in 1969 to reach the final four of the event when Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko retired due to illness. Pospisil led 3-0 in the first set when Davydenko stopped playing. Raonic, the 11th seed, rode the spirited support of the center court crowd for a 7-6 (2), 4-6, 6-4 victory over Ernests Gulbis, the Latvian who knocked out second-seeded Andy Murray on Thursday. “I was expecting it to be very difficult,” Raonic said. “He had a great win yesterday. He’s especially dangerous when he

gets matches under him and he’s feeling well. He wasn’t really making many errors.” It will be the first meeting between Raonic and Pospisil in an ATP Tour tournament. Pospisil holds a 3-1 edge in their four meetings in lower level events, but Raonic took the most recent match in 2010. “Exciting match,” said Pospisil. “Two Canadians in the semifinal, one guaranteed to be in the final. It’s a historic moment for tennis in Canada. “We know each other very well. Since we were little kids. You’ve got to give the edge to Milos, for sure. I have the edge in terms of head-to-head (matchups), but things have changed in the last two years. My run here doesn’t change anything here in terms of that. But we’ll see how it goes.”

Serena Williams storms into Rogers Cup semis tORONtO, August 10 (AP): Top-seeded Serena Williams eased into the Rogers Cup semifinals by overpowering Slovakia's Magdalena Rybarikova 6-1, 6-1 on Friday. Williams, coming off a seventh tournament victory of the last month in the Swedish Open, had seven aces and finished off Rybarikova in just 60 minutes. "I'm definitely feeling pretty good, playing much better than I have the past month I would say," Williams said. "I'm glad I'm getting back to the feeling and getting into some rhythm." The two-time Rogers Cup champion will face third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, a 7-6 (1), 7-5 winner over fifth-seeded Sara Errani of Italy. "It's a good matchup," Williams said. "She does everything so well. She's playing better too actually so she's having a much better year. It's definitely not going to be easy. I can only hope that I play well and I can only hope that I come out on top." In the other quarterfinals, fourth-seeded Li Na of China beat Slovakia's Dominika Cibulkova 7-6 (1), 6-2; and Romania's

The 'never-healing' rift between Waugh & Warne

MELBOuRNE, August 10 (ANI): Former Australian cricket great Steve Waugh has revealed that his decision to drop spin legend Shane Warne from the Test team for 1999 West Indies series in the Caribbean has created a distance between them that has never healed. According to the Herald Sun, Waugh had spoken candidly in his new book 'The Meaning Of Luck' about the lingering fallout of the decision to drop Warne from that fateful series, in which Australia won the first Test of that tour and lost the next two. However, Waugh refused to regret the decision, believing that even though he lost a 'great friend' in Warne, his quantum call, made with fellow tour selector Geoff Marsh, gave him fortitude and taught him that knowing what is right and acting on it are two different things. According to Waugh, he hoped that Warne came to terms with the fact that the 'common-sense' decision was based on facts and 'gut instinct', key ingredients which every leader must trust and rely on, and was not about him not trusting Warne's skill and innate love for the big occasion. The report also sug-

gested that the tone of Waugh's words reveals that the two superstars, who shared an Australian dressing room for more than a decade, have never reconciled the issue, with Waugh saying that Warne was surprised and wounded by the decision, as he did not expect it at all. Stating that the decision was a 'massive call', Waugh however, defended his decision, saying that it was right of him to rest Warne from the Test as he was not bowling up to his normal standards given that he had just come back from having a shoulder surgery on that tour. Waugh also said that he felt that by dropping Warne, he was almost doing his teammate a favour by not exposing him when he was not at his best, adding that as Australia was 2-1 down in his first series as a captain so it was a defining moment for the team and for his captaincy. Although Waugh admitted that the decision must have felt like betrayal of trust from Warne's point of view, this was proven to be merely one pothole in his journey along the highway over the course of his career, adding that a leader must stand for something or fall for everything.

Sorana Cirstea upset sixth-seeded defending champion Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. Radwanska earned a measure of revenge after she was eliminated by Errani in the French Open quarterfinals. Radwanska and Errani traded breaks virtually the entire first set before Radwanska took the tiebreaker after a smooth volley drop and wide return from Errani on set point. The two players again traded breaks in the second set until Radwanska held serve at 6-5 when Errani returned long on double match point. Radwanska closed it out in just over two hours, avoiding any repeat of their 2012 meeting at the WTA Championship - an epic 3{-hour, three-set victory for Radwanska. Cirstea knocked off former top-ranked players Jelena Jankovic and Caroline Wozniacki to reach the quarterfinals. "It's probably (my) best tournament in a long, long time," Cirstea said. "It might come as a surprise to many people ... I don't think for me and my team it's such a big surprise because we have been working consistently on things." Kvitova double-faulted 10 times, her ninth coming on a break point for Cirstea to open the third set 1-0. "The beginning of the second set

I started to feel a little bit low of the energy," Kvitova said. "The serve was really bad after this, and I didn't find energy from my legs." Li, a finalist last year, needed 96 minutes to get past Cibulkova, who came into the tournament on a roll with a recent title victory over Radwanska in Stanford, California. Li broke to make it 6-5 in the first set, taking the game with a cross-court winner, but couldn't hold and needed a tiebreaker to win the set. She cruised through the second set en route to her first semifinal berth since losing at Stuttgart in April.

Community Shield: Moyes eyes first Man U trophy

LONDON, August 10 (AP): After a brand-building slog around the Far East and Australia, the serious business of managing Manchester United is beginning for David Moyes. The newcomer could excuse lackluster results on the preseason tour while getting acquainted with the United side he inherited from Alex Ferguson. But starting Sun-

day, there's little margin for error. In the traditional curtain raiser to the English season, Premier League champion United faces FA Cup winner Wigan at Wembley Stadium. Though the Community Shield is rarely considered a major piece of silverware, it presents Moyes the chance to pick up his first trophy as United manager.

said it's "impossible" to try to match the trophy haul of his fellow Scotsman. The success, however, will have to continue. "We're almost there as far as preseason goes," Moyes said. "I think we'd like to have a bit more continuity than what we've had. We've had one or two players dropping in and out because of injury, but the players have been great." Apart from Wayne Rooney, perhaps. Frustrated at his playing time last season, the 27-year-old Rooney asked Ferguson toward the end of the season to be allowed to leave the 20-time English champions. The striker, though, is being denied a move to rival Chelsea, with United rejecting two bids and stating that he won't be sold. "You don't need to convince anybody to play for Manchester United," was Moyes' latest stance on Rooney's future this week. There is only a slim chance of Rooney facing Wigan, which was relegated to the second tier after winning the FA Cup, with United disclosing that he has a shoulder injury after missing the tour matches with hamstring troubles. United won just two of its six preseason tour matches against the backdrop of the Rooney saga and the struggle to sign reinforcements. Efforts to

Moyes' only honor so far is the third-tier title he won with Preston in 2000 before 11 impressive but trophyless years with Everton. He was hand-picked, though, by Ferguson to succeed him after a 27-year United reign that produced 38 trophies — including 10 Community Shields. "I will be trying to make this the first trophy

of many," Moyes said. "But, if we win, it's really something that will have been earned by Sir Alex." "It's because of his good work in the Premier League last season that we're in the Community Shield. I'll do my best to finish off the job but it's Sir Alex who will deserve a lot of the credit if we're successful at Wembley." Moyes has already

ately by the Bayern fans — both tried their luck from distance. Ribery was outstanding throughout. Then Dante stretched for Juan Arango's cross and deflected the ball past Neuer. "I had a nice time at Moenchengladbach. I have a lot of respect for the club," Dante said. "It can happen, but it shouldn't happen. I've to keep the head high for the next game." Bayern looked dangerous again after the break, when Robben, Alaba and Mueller all had efforts, before Toni Kroos struck the post. The visitors might have equalized but Alaba's penalty put the game beyond reach. "After it was 2-1 we noticed that there was still a chance. We did well. We showed we were up for it," Moenchengladbach goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen said. "You can lose against Bayern." Guardiola said he still needs more time to work with the team he inherited from Jupp Heynckes. "But at a big club like Bayern there is no time," he said. "We need a bit of calm ahead of the next game against Eintracht Frankfurt."

ROCHEstER, August 10 (REutERs): Not much went right for a frustrated Tiger Woods in Friday's second round of the PGA Championship. He putted poorly and lost ground to the leaders on a day when low scores abounded in rain-softened conditions. A heavy favourite coming into the tournament after winning last week's WGC-Bridgestone Invitational by seven shots, Woods battled to a level-par 70 before heading off to the practice range. His bid to end a five-year title drought in the majors appeared to be in tatters as he ended the day 10 strokes behind pacesetting American Jason Dufner, tied for 38th at one-over par. "Obviously I'm going to have to put together a really good weekend," Woods told reporters. "This golf course is pretty soft. It's definitely gettable. Got to hit the ball in play and keep the ball near the hole so I can be aggressive with my putts." Woods offset four birdies with four bogeys in a round that included 32 putts, and two three-putts over the closing stretch. Asked if disappointment summed his feelings, Woods replied: "Just the finish I had obviously, and driving the green at 14 and three-putting there. And then three-putting at 16. "I missed a few (putts) today. I didn't hit it anywhere near as good as I did yesterday. Consequently, I didn't have that many looks. When I did, I missed my share, too." Every aspect of his game appeared to be in top order last week as Woods clinched his 79th career PGA Tour win

sign former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona seemed to hit a wall on Thursday, and Thiago Alcantara already opt to leave Barca for Bayern Munich instead of Old Trafford. "We appreciate Cesc is a contracted player at Barcelona and completely respect everything Cesc has said," United said Thursday after Fabregas said he wanted to stay with the Spanish champions. Sunday's game at Wembley will be the first time United has played at the national stadium since 1985 without Ferguson in the dugout. Even Wigan's manager will find it strange encountering Moyes instead. "Sir Alex was there for a long time, particularly for football," Coyle said. "The way football works, that time is probably worth 10 times that amount in any other walk of life." For Coyle, though, Moyes was the "natural successor." "It is great to see a home-grown manager evolving to that level," Coyle said. Wigan's season has already begun because, after winning the FA Cup at Wembley in May, the team was relegated from the Premier League. The trophy success saw manager Roberto Martinez enticed by Everton to replace Moyes, with Coyle taking charge at Wigan.

Bayern beats 'Gladbach in Bundesliga opener Tiger frustrated after losing ground at PGA

BERLIN, August 10 (AP): Defending champion Bayern Munich kicked off the new German season with a 3-1 win over visiting Borussia Moenchengladbach in Pep Guardiola's first Bundesliga game on Friday. Arjen Robben opened the scoring with a deft flick from Franck Ribery's sublime pass in the 12th minute, Mario Mandzukic pounced to make it 2-0 four minutes later, and David Alaba sealed the result with a penalty in the 69th, after Dante's own goal had given his former teammates some hope in the 40th. Despite the good start, Guardiola was unimpressed with his team after the break. "In the second half, we had no control. It was counterattack, counterattack, counterattack," Guardiola said. "We need a bit of calm. Important players like Basti (Schweinsteiger) and Javi Martinez need to train more. They haven't trained much in the last two weeks." Bayern's penalty was the second awarded for handball against the unfortunate Alvaro Domin-

Ter Stegen saved Thomas Mueller's effort from the first spot kick, only for Tobias Welz to award another against Dominguez as he tried to clear the rebound, and Alaba made no mistake. The visitors had started well, moving the ball with confidence and displaying no nerves in front of the European champions. Raffael even

back-heeled the ball out of defense and Moenchengladbach forced two corners — before Robben struck. Ter Stegen's kick-out was gathered by Bastian Schweinsteiger, who found Ribery on the left, and the Frenchman played the ball precisely into Robben's path for the Dutchman to tuck away. "We made a little mistake and Bayern punished it directly," ter Stegen

said. Mandzukic prodded home from close range after the goalkeeper spilled a free kick, and should have scored again three minutes later, when he headed wide from three meters (yards). Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer saved Max Kruse's effort as the visitors showed a response on the half-hour mark. Robben and Ribery — Robbery as they're known affection-

"Obviously I need to hit it better than I have, obviously keep the ball below the hole so I can be aggressive with the putts." A four-time winner of the PGA Championship, Woods faces a massive task going into Saturday's third round as he seeks to regain form with 37 players ahead of him on the leaderboard.

Swiss officials issue formal apology to Oprah

prah Winfrey has received a formal apology from Swiss tourism representatives after the media mogul allegedly became the victim of racism while shopping in Zurich last month (Jul13). The talk show icon and actress claimed earlier this week (begs05Aug13) that a shop assistant at an upmarket store in Switzerland refused to let her examine a designer purse because it was too expensive. Winfrey was convinced the incident occurred because she is black, but the boutique’s owner, Trudie Goetz, has since spoken

Now officials from the Swiss Tourism Office have waded into the race debate and have issued a statement apologising for the way Winfrey was treated. The press release reads: “Switzerland Tourism is deeply sorry to learn about the experience Ms. Winfrey recently had in Switzerland, and we apologise that her feelings were hurt. A friend of the rugby player claimed that though Cipriani regrets his action and he tells his friends that he ‘fu***d up, he has earlier found Kelly’s obsession with putting photos online tiresome, the Mirror reported. The source said that the 25-year-old rugby player wishes to have a way by which he could win his former girlfriend back but have there were times when he told his friends and other girls he was bored. He added that Brooke loved to post photos and videos and some of Cipriani’s mates wondered why he got involved. -pop singer Rain can’t seem to shake the controversy relating to his two-year mandatory enlistment in the South Korean army. Rain completed his military service on July 10, after a military court found him innocent of all charges relating to a PR officer’s scandal that resulted in eight recruits receiving disciplinary action. But two politicians in the South Korean Assembly feel he should be forced to enlist again like when international superstar Psy was forced to serve another 20 months after being found dodging his military duties through a celebrity loophole in 2007. The demands for Rain to reenlist stem from allegations that arose after Rain was honorably discharged, according to the website allkpop, when Kim Kwang Jin, chair of the Democratic Party’s National Defense Committee charged that the star (along with nine other recruits) never filled out the proper paperwork to become part of the celebrity recruit program. “Our country has compulsory military service, and it must be equal to all the citizens,” one assemblyman said. “But Rain became a celebrity recruit without even having to submit documents just because he is famous. Usually, celebrity recruits have an acceptance rate of threeto-one or four-to-one after all the documents are submitted, but it’s obvious that he received special treatment.” “Currently, there are talks about Rain’s re-enlistment, but the exact point of the problem brought up was that 10 celeb-

rity recruits were accepted even without proper documentation. Since that is a problem, they should re-enlist,” another assemblyman added. “It’s also true that one of the 10 recruits are Rain, but the problem was not just for Rain. Also, the investigation was not limited to those related to the massage parlor incident, but to the entire celebrity recruit.” Yet Kim stopped short of condemning the 10 soldiers who were admitted into the celebrity recruit PR a g e n t pro-

gram known as the Promotional Support Brigade without paperwork. The National Defense Committee chair believes this was an administrative error that should be dealt with internally. “Looking in detail of the inspection from the Ministry of Defense showed that there were bigger problems than those initially announced,” Kim said. “This problem shouldn’t be solved by punishing the celebrity recruits or the employees, but by making the director of the Defense Media Agency and the administration of the Ministry of Defense take responsibility.” All eligible males between the ages of 18 and 35 must en-

roll for roughly two years of army service in South Korea (the length of mandatory enrollment changes by several months depending on which branch of the military that they serve in). Before the elimination of the Promotional Support Brigade last month, pop stars wishing to

enroll in the Ministry of Defense program were asked to submit their album sales figures and a letter of recommendation within three months of their enlistment. The program was eliminated after the news program “Scene 21” behaving filmed celebrity recruits from the program behaving illegally after an armysanctioned concert. The footage prompted public charges of favoritism for famous soldiers.

Sindhu SettleS for bronze at World ChampionShipS GuanGzhou, auGust 10 (Ians): After creating waves in the international badminton circuit, P.V. Sindhu lost her women's singles semifinal in straight games to settle for a bronze medal at the World Championships in this Chinese city Saturday. Tenth seed Sindhu, who ousted defending champion Yihan Wang and Asian Games gold medallist Shixian Wang enroute the last four, was beaten by World No.3 Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand 10-21, 13-21 in 36 minutes at the Tianhe Indoor Stadium. The Thai fourth seed had also beaten Sindhu in the India Open Super Series semifinals in April in New Delhi. This is only the third instance, and first in women's singles, that an Indian will bring home a medal from the Worlds. Prakash Padukone won the men's singles bronze in 1983 at Copenhagen while Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa won another bronze in women's doubles in the 2011 edition. Sindhu matched Ratchanok at the net as both shuttlers played safe initially. But the fourth seed found legs and started playing aggressively. Ratchanok's down-theline smashes proved too good for Sindhu, who was unable to retrieve the shots, allowing the Thai to pull away to 11-4 in five minutes. Ratchanok, a three-time Junior World Champion, used her typical deceptive overhead shots which caught Sindhu off

"Ayyoooo hard luck Sindhu... no matter what u still the rock star...congratulations fr the bronze....mmwahhhh," tweeted Jwala. guard and forced her to commit errors into the net. The Hyderabadi struggled with Ratchanok's style of play, who extended the lead by out-maneuvering Sindhu. The Thai was way ahead when it came to smashes. She had 12 smash winners out of 21 points in comparison to Sindhu's three, helping her to convert her only gamepoint and finishing the game in 11 minutes. ChEstEr-LE-strEEt, auGust 10 (aGEnCIEs): England stormed back into a fighting position on Day 2 of the 4th Test with Stuart Broad taking 3 toporder wickets to leave Australia in a spot of bother at 75/3. Earlier, England were bowled out without adding to their overnight score of 238 as last man James Anderson was bowled for 16 by Jackson Bird in the second over of the day's play. With the ball, England, who've retained the Ashes with a lead of 2-0 after 3 games, started to up the pressure. David Warner, was the first batsman out, falling in the 3rd over. The left-hander was outdone by a bit a pace and inward movement to have his offstump knocked back. Broad, with a bit of cloud cover to help him, was bowling brilliantly and the right-armer soon had Usman Khawaja's wicket to show against his name. Khawaja was caught in two minds about playing or leaving the ball, and he could only succeed in feathering an edge behind to Matt Prior. Chris Rogers, at the other end, kept at the scoring with a barrage of boundaries. His partner, Michael Clarke looked edgy too start with but slowly started to settle in. Rogers survived two close calls in the 8th over of the innings, with England calling a review for LBW which was turned down before the batsman himself reviewed for an incorrectly given caught behind decision. The duo helped Australia keep England at bay as Lunch loomed, but Broad once again gave England a way back into the game by accounting for Michael Clarke. The right-armer was consistently troubled

by Broad, and the England pacer had the Australian skipper edge to Alastair Cook at first slip to leave Australia reeling at 49/3. Steven Smith and Rogers played out the remaining overs to take Australia to Lunch at 75/3. Australia strengthened their position in the post Lunch session with Chris Rogers leading the way with a hard-fought fifty. The visitors did well to put behind the setbacks they suffered in the morning session and made steady progress towards erasing the deficit. Shane Watson too played a fine hand in helping Australia recover as he hit a fine 38 and ensured the England bowlers were made to work hard. England looked set to pile up the pressure and reap rewards like they did in the first session as Tim Bresnan struck in the 2nd over to send back Steven Smith for 17. The wicket early in the session would've given England hope of making big inroads, but Watson and Rogers proved to be a as solid as rocks. The duo started off slowly but once Rogers got to his fifty it proved to be smooth sailing for the visitors. They started picking off boundaries at regular intervals as the deficit came down to double digits. Jimmy Anderson, Bresnan and Broad were all proving to be ineffective and Cook turned to Graeme Swann and Jonathan Trott for a breakthrough. Even the slower bowlers struggled against the now settled pair as their partnership crossed the 70-run mark. Australia went in to Tea at a comfortable position at 148/4, trailing England by 90 runs.

the Thai made sure that she retained a healthy lead and was ahead 11-5 at the break. The fourth seed disguised her shots and kept building her lead. The Thai's speed and agility made her rush to a 20-12 lead. The World No.12 saved one of the eight matchpoints but in the end, the game and match went to Ratchnok, who became the first player from Thailand to reach the finals of the World Championships in any category, ensuring her country of at least a silver medal.

'it is a big victory for me' nEW DELhI, auGust 10 (PtI): A look at the draw and she knew it was not going to be easy but rising shuttler P V Sindhu said she never underestimated herself as she slayed one giant after another for a historic bronze medal at the World Championships in Guangzhou, China. Sindhu, ranked 12th, today suffered a 10-21 13-21 loss to world number three Ratchanok Inthanon of Thailand in the semifinal to settle for a bronze medal at the prestigious event. The 18-year-old is the first woman shuttler from India to get a medal at the mega-event. "I am a bit upset after the loss but I am happy to win the bronze. It was my first World Championship and it is a big victory for me," said Sindhu. "Actually the World Championship draw was really tough for me because all the good players were there and I knew I had to play really well. I had to play Wang Yihan and Shixian Wang, but I didn't think that I will go on to lose. "I was coming from an injury and missed two tournaments, so I just wanted to give my best, my 100 per cent," she added. Playing in her maiden World Championships, Sindhu notched up stunning victories against two Chinese players in the run-up to the semifinals but she failed to read Ratchanok's deceptive game. Talking about the semifinal match, Sindhu said: "It was tough. She played really well and there were plenty of errors from my side. I want to come back stronger and next time I want to be better," she said. Asked how she will deal with the burden of expectations following her bronze medalwinning feat, Sindhu said she would look to surpass the hopes that have been pinned on her. "There is nothing like pressure. I hope to go beyond the expectations," she said.
