The organizations, through a press note, alleged that on January 12, one Imdongchujang (26) of Changki village and a permanent resident of Hokiyong Ward in Mangkolemba, “forcefully abducted” a class 10 student (name withheld) of Baptist Higher Secondary School, Mangkolemba from her rented residence at around 7:30 pm. Sumi Aphuyemi Kukami Hoho pledge to support ‘Naga issue’ ‘Explore yourself & inspire others’

PUgHObOtO, JANUARY 13 (MExN): The Sumi Aphuyemi Kukami Hoho (SAKH)— the apex organization of the Sumi Aphuyemi—has decided and pledged to “give support to the Naga issue in the greater interest of the Nagas in general and the Sumis in particular.” To this effect, it will convene a general public meeting at the Pughoboto headquarters “at the earliest.”

This was stated today in a press release from SAKH president, Suhoje Kiho (GB), who highlighted the Hoho’s consultative meeting held on January 4 this year at Ghathashi Town that deliberated on the December 21 incident and the aftermath. “The members that attended the meeting have vehemently condemned the incidents. They viewed that the grue-

some aftermath would have been avoided if the NSCN authority could have accepted the demand of the public on time,” noted the release. With regard to the “physical non-cooperation of the Sumi Aphuyemi to Sumi volunteers in the gun bathe with NSCN-IM Z.B. Battalion at Mukalimi designated Camp,” the SAKH stated, “according to our customary practice

no group or individual have the right to attack the enemy without the consent of the rightful landowner.” Quoting examples of “destructive acts by the volunteers,” the SAKH stated, “We observed that the actions taken by the Sumi volunteers were truly uncalled for disregard to the Sumi Aphuyemi was evident by the threatening acts to the neighbouring villages.”

JObSEEkErS bEwArE! nsUB cautions against misleading recruiters

bANgAlORE, JANUARY 13 (MExN): The Naga Students Union Bangalore (NSUB) has cautioned that there are many cases of young Nagas lured to the city by attractive job offers, only to find themselves working under exploitative conditions. A press note from the NSUB president, Sunep Imsong informed that there has been an influx of Naga youth to Bangalore in recent months, looking for better jobs and recruited through individual agencies, advertisements and institutions. NSUB stated that the recruiters promise large salaries, free accommodation, food and transport. Most of the young boys and girls are recruited as security guards, beauticians, tailors and call centre executives. However, NSUB revealed that the young recruits go through “miserable experiences,” with less salary, long working hours, no medical coverage and crammed accommodation and that

they have to pay for their own accommodation and transport. It further alleged that the recruits are “held almost like bonded laborers,” without being allowed to leave their workplace. NSUB cited a case involving a group of girls, who were brought to Bangalore through a “reputed institute” in Dimapur to work at a garments factory. The Union, after being contacted by the girls, visited them and was “appalled to see the conditions they were living in.”

It informed that almost all of the twenty odd Naga girls working there have been trying to leave the company. However, NSUB informed that their requests to leave were denied and that they were made to work even more. According to NSUB, the girls were recruited by a Naga woman in Dimapur, but stated that she has been “insensitive and non responsive” towards the plight of the girls. It added that a new batch of Nagas is arriving on January 16 to join the same company. NSUB president, Sunep Imsong informed that this is only one of many similar cases, where young Naga employees are being exploited. He stated that this has become a major concern and called for proper mechanisms in Nagaland to check such activities. NSUB further cautioned the public in Nagaland to be aware of “such misleading promises and advertisements.”

Phuvkiu Village | January 13

In the continuing effort to empower and develop its student community, the Yimchungrü Akherü Arihako (YAA), the apex students’ body of the Yimchungrü tribe held its 48th general conference from January 8-12 at Phuvkiu village under Pungro sub-division in Kiphire district with the theme ‘Explore yourself and inspire others.’ At the same time, Phuvkiu Village Students’ Union also observed its golden jubilee with the theme ‘Celebrating deliverance.’ The YAA conference concluded on a high note with Parliamentary secretary for CAWD, R Tohanba, as the guest of honour in the valedictory function held Sunday night. “Education opens the windows to the world. A society advances according to the progress in education. Education is the only instrument which will open the eyes of ignorance and deliver people from the bondage of ignorance”, the parliamentary secretary said in his address. Tohanba said there is a paradigm shift in the field of education - its objectives and approaches. Likewise, the interest and aspirations of people and society have also drastically changed from simple to complex ones. “Now your education should not be focused on government jobs alone but prepare your mindset towards developing your skills for earning your livelihood through diverse fields of interests”, Tohanba said. He added that to develop a society

and to move ahead depends on how students contribute their positive thoughts and ideas. Stating that students are always on the move in search of new knowledge and understanding new ideas, he encouraged them to explore their own potentialities and try to develop those potentialities to the fullest through the system of education available to them at different stages. “Explore yourself and inspire others is a very relevant theme to that end. You can never be an inspiration to others until and unless you explore who you are and what you are. You need to develop your skills and potentialities by sincerely imbibing the right kind of education. Only when you explore yourself and understand your strength and live and do accordingly will others learn good things from your life and actions”, Tohanba stated. Stating that education is a lifelong and continuous process, the parliamentary secretary also reminded the students of Robert Frost’s inspirational quote “Miles to go before I sleep” and said that if students sleep before they reach their destination, then the world will leave them behind. Further, Tohanba stressed on maintaining unity and cultural bonds among the six-dialect speaking people constituting the Yimchungrü tribe. Deputy Commissioner, Kiphire district, Kesonyu Yhome also exhorted the students. Parliamentary secretary for Excise, Economics & Statistics and LM&CP, T Torechu and host of district administration officials, public leaders and elders attended the closing function.
